the ballad of songbirds and snakes… im gonna say it… that’s the best hunger games movie they ever made. its like they learned from the original four and knew exactly how to capture this prequel perfectly with all of the elements of the old movies plus just simply breathtaking set, direction, writing, and ACTING. THE ACTING.
#olivia’s corner#im on the floor rn over this#like is it the most iconic movie? no. not when catching fire exists#but objectively this is the best film#it was so beautiful#and sickening

[Image description: A traditional drawing of Nancy Thompson in the film a Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. It's a headshot which is drawn with coloured pencils. She has a large white streak in her long, curly hair. Her expression has a slight grimace to it with her mouth open to show her teeth and her eyebrows beginning to pull together. Her eyes look off into the distance. The glimpse of her shoulders shows she's wearing a red shirt with a v-neck, a necklace peaking out from under it. The colours are bold and warm and the coloured pencils give the piece a grainy texture. There's a pale yellow circle behind her, with the rest of the background being the off-white of the paper.]

MUTANT MAYHEM THOUGHTS IT WAS SUPER AWESOME LET'S FUCKING GOO
BANGER BANGER BANGER FILM. definitely the thing i liked most was the visuals - the style is SO UNIQUE (with the deliberately misshapen designs and grungy colours with harsh neon contrast and the FUCKING !! SKETCH/SCRATCH LINES DUUDE), and the animation was just so full of personality and an absolute joy to watch.
AND SHOUT OUT TO THE EFFECTS AND LIGHTING ANIMATION ESPECIALLY HOLY SHIT ??? every time they had the scratched on light rays or scribbled smoke and dust i started like DROOLING dude.
the cinematography was also just absolutely amazing - incredible use of the medium to do these fantastic running shots with complex angles. favourite sequence was definitely the side shots of the boys fighting and interrogating people (SO smooth and the fighting choreography was incredible and showcased their styles and personalities so well, and the intercut sense of MOTION. dude. banger.)
AND !! THE FUCKING SOUND DESIGN!! especially the score dude MY GOD i loved the use of pitchy and unconventional instruments it fit the movie to a tee.
LOVED THE CHARACTERS! particularly the boys and the other mutants (mondo wingnut and leatherhead especially). all the interactions were super sweet and well-written and i just LOVED the VA performances - played off each other immaculately. i love how cringe and unapologetically TEEN the turtles are. and adored splinter too.
i think i'm glad they focused more on developing their relationship as a family than individual character arcs, because it helped reduce any bias or favouritism for specific turtles (COUGH leo and raph ahem), and also worked best with the super fast pacing, i think. didn't feel too cramped in all the busyness.
that said, i did struggle with the comedy a bit? particularly the reference humour. NOT THAT IT WAS ALL BAD! quite a few got a laugh out of me, but there were so many packed into such a small amount of time that it ended up getting a bit distracting. felt a bit like "let's wave all our properties in your face" and kind of out of place at times (i would've preferred for them to be less frequent, or for the references to be knock-offs)
i don't think the plot was the MOST compelling, either, but really that's fine, because it wasn't trying to be. the focus was on the art and action and dynamics and it is completely fine for it to focus more on that than thematic and emotional beats.
oh also i can't decide whether i love or hate the milking joke. funny at times but the more they retreaded it the more uncomfortable it felt lmao.
overall i think it is the most technically impressive tmnt movie, that i've seen at least, and from a cinematography point of view? ABSOLUTELY MIND-BLOWING. but it isn't necessarily the most emotionally compelling tmnt movie, and you know what? that's okay! because is wasn't trying to be, and it absolutely excels at what it aims itself towards.
#tmnt mutant mayhem#tmntmm#mutant mayhem spoilers#tmntmm spoilers#objectively in terms of production value cinematography sound design and so on? the best tmnt film.#but i do think the rise movie is more emotionally compelling and has more character complexity#AND YOU KNOW WHAT? THAT'S AWESOME! variety is the spice of life and they both excel in different ways#i'd give it like an 8.5/10 (maybe a 9 upon rewatch but we'll see how that goes)#and i think it's a must-watch if you're into animation and art because it is SO stunning and stylistically unique and just fantastic really

The lighthouse is infamouse in my house
Cause if i am correct about what film we're talking about
Its really artsy i think
And I have a brother who is a cinema nerd and likes artsy movies and once for movie night with my older siblings he showed em the lighthouse, now whenever someone puts a bad movie they say
"Hey at least its not the lighthouse"
Wich is so funny to me because my brother keeps getting bullied for it years later
He showed them the light house during quarantine
I dont doubt it being good i just want you to know whenever you mention the lighthouse this is what I think about, my dear brother who i talk theater stuff with.
That’s. This is so funny to me. But also devastating /lh
#blue babbles#the lighthouse#yeah it’s very artsy that’s probably the correct film haha#but ooough. it always hurts me so bad when I hear that people don’t like it#I KNOWW ITS SUBJECTIVE BUT. OBJECTIVELY IT IS THE BEST MOVIE IMO

Sunday movie report
Went to see Amerikatsi. It was very good! One of the best films we’ve seen this year.
Set mostly in a 1950s Soviet prison, it’s probably a little more lighthearted and hopeful than is realistic, but not in an obnoxious or cloying way. It’s heartwarming and funny and full of love for Armenia and her people.
Honestly, no notes or complaints. I loved it.
#weekend movie report#‘one of the best films we’ve seen’ maybe doesn’t mean much#you don’t know all of what we’ve seen#i’ll just say that it’s probably not better than oppenheimer as like an objective piece of filmmaking#but i enjoyed it more than oppenheimer

my ranking so far btw am i controversial
#i honestly dont know where to put the wind rises#because i feel like my ability to take it seriously was kind of coloured by .. you know#so idek how i really feel about it as a film#some of its hard to rank like when marnie was there was probably objectively good but i just prefer fantasy elements. also with that as wel#i kind of was coloured by the annoying twist even though i really enjoyed most of it.#im kind of ranking based on like. would i want to watch it again & with marnie rewatching it would be annoying now i know.#pom poko underrated!! definitely too long but like#some crazy animation and it was so cathartic to watch at this poitn in Society#the end part made me cry#cried at the endings ofall the top 3#so if they make me cry they automatically go above the wind rises#arietty being that high is litearlly just personal like it spoke to me and i nejoyed it sooo much and it honestly has the best soundtrack#so far. so i get why people find t mid but.....i was obsessed honestly i would happily rewatch it right now

Guillermo Del Toro, actual certified monster lover, would probably bop Tim Burton on the top of the head like a post driver and bury him 6 feet deep given the opportunity. And then write a touching and psychologically fraught horror story about the price of deifying famous people that ends with someone keeping the ghost of Tim Burton as a pet. He would haunt a hat box filled with rusty old keys.
Forever baffled by the fact that Tim Burton is still thought of as a defender of oddness. He treats monsters as things to be gawked at, to be drawn and imagined, then put away in a safe little box. He doesn't love monsters, he loves freak shows.
#Guillermo Del Toro#Tim Burton#he had a lot of style once upon a time but with age I begin to be creeped out by a lot of his storytelling choices#Like we all agree that the Tim Burton Batman Catwoman is the best iteration of that character ever committed to film#but from an objective perspective it's super fetishy and weird.#The only reason it works as well as it does is because Michelle Pfeiffer is a hell of an actress

"You can't call a creator "bad" at art if the commodities they produce sell millions of copies and get translated into a billion other languages and comic books and movie deals and theme parks and-"
Stephen King dominated the entire English-language fiction market for decades, to the point that the entire publishing industry warped around him, and calling him a hack is the least controversial thing in the world! The Harry Potter books are not well written, their themes are trite and the positive moral lessons they contain are undone by the text's own sneering school bully mean streak.
They suck shit, stranger. Sorry you liked the literary equivalent of the milk left in the bowl after you ate all the cereal out of it. Kids love that shit, but that doesn't mean it warrants a recipe card.
#haterade#this is the second time I've seen someone say 'if it sold that well it's objectively good'#specifically abt harry potter#both people specifically used the term 'objectively'#and The Free Market saw that it was good#damn i guess james cameron is oBjEcTiVeLy the best film director of all time#followed closely by jj abrams and michael bay

nausicaä and princess mononoke are not The Same yes they are similar in Having Environmental Themes and A Cool Princess Character but they are very different movies. very very. nausicaä is about a societal ignorance of the nature around it its about conflict between nations and a desire for a peaceful solution. its about taking the time to research the land and animals you live alongside and challenging your current beliefs about them. its about genuine interest in and compassion for animals no one else will love. princess mononoke is about hatred and revenge and how those things can ruin you and its about humanity's impact on its environment and respect for the environment and other animals and sacred things. its about being ostracized and finding new companions and having stronger relationships with them than could ever happen between you and your original home and its about finding those relationships again despite everything. both movies are about war and nature but so are countless others even from the same studio. san isnt even the same kind of "princess" nausicaä is
#posts#to be clear i love both these movies a lot i dont think either is better than the other in any objective way#nausicaä is my favorite movie ever but that only gives it a win for the nostalgia factor#and also i havent seen either of these in several months but it was only last year that i did last see them. so my memory of them is alrigh#but not perfect. so if im missing anything big thats probably why#my point of this is that these movies dont need to be compared in a way that treats them as copies. or in a way that tries to pick the Best#i would love if people were comparing them as two different ways to go about similar/the same topics and still make Two Different Films#side note im unaware if princess mononoke has any Extra Lore? because the nausicaä movie is based on the manga series#which has SO MUCH MORE going on. the movie covers like 1/3 of the manga plot#so idk if theres any missing context for mononoke. to be fair there isnt really anything missing from nausicaä it stands fine as its own-#-movie. i didnt know abt the manga for several years i found it when i was likeeee. 13 or 14

spent an hour making a list related to That Fandom, followed by an hour listening to the haunting vibe playlist, followed by an hour reading the fanfic we wrote about my band and crying actual tears bc it's the peak of comedy, followed by an hour thinking about all the things I've ever created that will never be seen by anyone either bc I don't know how to show them to people or bc people just think they're bad but either way I'll never know the true answer, and now it's 10.30pm and I've basically experienced the full spectrum of emotions: autism, existential crisis, silly, and the feeling of being unseen
#the list btw was working out which south park character canonically gets the most bitches. kyle btw#but yeah the 4th hour was typical after experiencing the adrenaline rush laugh attack high of the 3rd hour#(with an air of bittersweet nostalgia for the joys of 2nd year uni)#and the 4th hour was just thoughts of like. do you ever make the best thing you've ever made and then you don't know what to do with it#even if the thing itself isn't objectively Good. but it's still the best thing in comparison to everything else you've made#and for me it's the messily written script for that film i wrote#and the album I'd been recording since 2020 and finally finished at the start of this year#and like. both of them i spent so much time on and both were for my own enjoyment#like the process of making them is fun#but then once they're finished what do you do? do you show other people? or do you just keep it to yourself#keeping it to yourself is the safer option bc you don't know what anyone's opinion of it is#the only thing is that it feels trapped inside i guess? like you've just got it to yourself for no reason#at least put it somewhere. post it online or print/record it in physical form. so you have some way of proving it ever existed#but then if you do post it online there's only four options:#1. no one sees it bc they don't know it's there (neutral)#2. people see it and enjoy it and they tell you (good)#3. people see it and hate it and they tell you (bad)#4. people possibly see it but whether or not they engage with it you'll never know and no one says anything about it (????? worst option)#and you don't wanna be obnoxious about it by reposting it all the time so you just assume either people don't like it or just don't care#and then leave it#and it's not even anyone's fault it's just you have no idea where you stand with anything#and then that leads back to the question of why would you make something in the first place if all you're gonna do is finish it#if the process is enjoyable then just make small versions of it so the finish doesn't feel as wasted#more emphasis on the making experience. which is the fun part#idek what i'm talking about. does anyone get this#i'm not saying no one should ever make big things bc it's pointless or anything#but also what is the point in finishing something massive if it's just gonna be left collecting dust in your mind. and possibly storage#if it always feels like this i'm just gonna never finish anything ever again. and then everything will stay fun forever <3#ramble

And hairy legs. And a bigger bush.
Sorry but Bella Baxter should’ve had hairy pits
#poor things#Bella Baxter#Emma stone#yorgos lanthimos#films#Lanthimos I do love you but these details told me there was a man at the head of this project#I don't know how to explain it I think a man will do his best to understand a woman he will try his objective best#but there are some things that he will still take for granted#it's supposed to be obvious if bella doesn't shave then she should be hairy#but hairy is not the kind of rebellion that captivates the mind. it's just. unattractive in the popular opinion.
