i also think the fact celebrities are actively pushing against interaction with fans is because like. they're so frequent now? you're expected to do them on social media. you're expected to do it in person any time you leave the house. you're expected to be ready to be photographed by anyone with a smart phone (everyone in the world) which gets uploaded instantly to everyone in the world who now knows where you are and MORE will show up. 2008 taylor swift was in a time when NOT everyone had a smart phone and uploading a photo to a social media platform means it goes viral in seconds.
would chappell roan be AS against taking photos with fans if it mean it would take hours to upload and she could be guaranteed that one fan interaction wouldn't lead to thousands more in the span of an hour? if "just one quick photo" didn't mean everyone would see it immediately then stalk her to her location? the modern celebrity has to deal with the fact that "just one quick photo" means that they now have to leave the area immediately or risk behind held there hostage for hours while thousands more want "just one quick photo".
it's a level of "on" that is inconceivable to 2008 taylor swift. i think we really started to see this shift in 2014, and taylor struggled to cope with it in response. i think it's GOOD that we're calling out how these behaviors have led to an increase of stalking and harassment of main female celebrities.
