I shifted
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I shifted to my nana dr for about six months (even though only six seconds have passed here, since I set the time so that one month in the dr equals one second in this reality). I'm still a little confused from coming back, but overall, I feel good.
This dr isn’t my main one but could become my main one. Before I share some details, I want to clarify that this DR doesn't follow the anime’s storyline. For example, that asshole Takumi will never meet Hachi. I'll try to keep it brief, as I don't like talking too much about my dr after all, it is real life .
I live about 15 minutes away from Hachi and Nana’s apartment, in a suburb of Tokyo. I work at a bakery and also do art. Living in Tokyo between 1998 and 1999 is a mix of nostalgia and surreal. It's hard to describe precisely. I’ve also learned to live without modern smartphones, using those old brick phones with buttons instead. This has taught me to live more in the moment, without the constant need to check social media or waste hours scrolling through TikTok, aimlessly losing time.
In this dr, I’m learning to be more independent. Thanks also to my experiences in my Kpop drs, I've learned to manage an apartment on my own here: I do the laundry, cook, manage my budget, pay bills, and work in the bakery. Oh, and I'm also studying to get my driver's license.
I’ve also started learning to play the guitar, especially thanks to Nana. Playing has always been a huge dream of mine, but I never had the chance to do it in this reality. Once, I even got emotional with joy while holding the guitar in my hands, because it’s something I’ve always loved doing.
My relationship with Hachi and Nana is really great.
Hachi is very close to me; she often texts to ask how I’m doing, how work is going, and invites me to hang out on weekends or go to the pub together. I love going out with her because she’s unashamed of anything or anyone, and with her, I never feel judged. She also has a great sense of style. Even though colorful clothes aren’t really my thing, she’s helped me find a style that suits me. I must admit, though, that she requires a lot of patience since she’s a bit naive.
As for Nana Osaki, I really love her a lot. She’s given me so much advice on some of my personal concerns, and she’s the kind of person who could listen to you for hours. She shows her affection through sarcastic jokes. We share the same taste in music. It took a little while for her to fully trust me and start confiding in me, but I understand her, and our bond has grown over time.
I’m still getting to know Shin and Nobu. Shin is very reserved, but I feel like we’ll become great friends. Nobu, on the other hand, has already opened up, and we’ve quickly become close.
Next time I shift, I’ll come back with a suitcase full of Vivienne Westwood clothes, necklaces, and rings!

would you be okay pitching ghost trick to someone who doesn’t rly know anything about it? i’ve heard of it before and that it’s good but idk why, and i don’t really get a lot out of advertisements or game descriptions
you know the toby-typical campiness in how he writes his characters in UTDR? over the top, extremely iconic, clearly working from preestablished tropes but doing his own special spin on them? put toby fox on acid and you've got shu takumi's writing style.
ghost trick isn't "just" good. ghost trick is the type of good that invents a whole new categorization for itself. ghost trick invented a situation to put little fictional bitches in that is so good, the most popular works in the tag are people from other fandoms being like "oh shit, let me put MY fictional bitches through in this situation as well"
it is one of the most hooking, satisfyingly delivered mysteries I've ever seen in a videogame. there is not a single second of the game that feels unutilised, everything pushes you forward in the mystery, and still it never feels choking. the way it handles tension and delivers its information is phenomenal. if this were a normal recommendation i would start talking about the gameplay and how fun and good it feels to play and how genuinely clever it is but you're not here for that, are you, so let me tell you the real selling point: every single character in this game is fucking insane. not a single one of them is normal. it's a noir. it's a parody. it's an animator's wet dream. my friend is playing the game on stream and they said his fiancée can tell when we're streaming because she can hear him doing his pathetic man voice on call.
listen to me. you will fall in love with sissel. i played One Shot earlier this year. i thought i was never going to find a game with a protagonist that crawled into my heart as much as niko. i was wrong. jesus christ i was wrong. you need to understand, this is a puzzle game. once you know the answers that's it for the gameplay. the replay value is extremely low. I have replayed it 5 times in three weeks just to make the wrong choices and watch what sissel says and quips about it. he's my guy. i need to hold his face in my hands. you will see his fuckass red suit, you will see his fuckass banana hair, you willl see his goofy little smile and his dirk strider ass sunglasses and you will whimper like a DOG because you miss him so much. i am missing him right now as we speak. fuck.
play ghost trick.

A Not-So-Disastrous Romance (Book 3) Chapter Three
Saiki Kusuo x Reader
Chapter Three: New Teacher
Summary: Their class gets a new teacher. He has a...weird face.
“Did you see the new teacher?” whispered a student.
“He’s going to be our homeroom teacher,” said another.
            “No way!”
            “He looks like a criminal.”
He has an unfortunately perverted-looking face.
“Poor guy,” said (Y/N). “He hasn’t done anything yet and is getting judged by his appearance.”
“His thoughts seem nice,” said Saiki.
“That’s good,” said (Y/N). “Hopefully, other people will look past his face.”
            “He looks like a creep.”
            “A real weirdo.”
“That’s enough!” said Hairo. “You can’t judge people by appearances.”
            “Hairo!” exclaimed classmates.
“You guys are just overreacting and being rude to him,” said Kuboyasu.
“Kuboyasu!” Students looked down in shame. “Right, we’re being rude to the pervert teacher. The pervert doesn’t have to be that.”
“That’s not much of an improvement,” said (Y/N).
            “No,” said Saiki.
“Here is he,” whispered a girl.
The door opened, and the teacher walked in. Saiki grimaced, and (Y/N) winced. He really did look weird with his downturned eyes, wiggly smile, and blushing face.
“Is something wrong?” he asked, worried about the silence.
            “Eek!” said Yumehara.
Is she nervous? How can I make her relax? I know. “Don’t be so nervous, Yumehara,” he said kindly.
“How do you know my name?” said Yumehara.
Isn’t he a teacher? thought (Y/N). The answer was obvious.
“Because you’re my student,” said the teacher.
Did he research me?! thought Yumehara.
He cleared his throat and stood at the head of the class. “I’ve often been told that I appear suspicious or perverted. I had totally forgotten about that.”
“I’m sorry. We judged you wrong,” said Hairo.
            “It’s okay,” said the teacher.
“But I trust you won’t set up a hidden camera in a girl’s locker room!” said Hairo.
            Wow, thought (Y/N) and Saiki.
“Thank…What? Do you think I’d do that?” said the teacher. “Wait a minute, I know people often get me wrong, but look at me carefully one more time. Do I look like a liar?”
He stared at the class, and the class stared at him. Several long seconds ticked by on the clock. The teacher cleared his throat and turned away.
Was that his most sincere look? thought the entire class. It was still creepy.
“If you get to know me, you will never see me as a perverted teacher,” continued the teacher. “My name is Takumi Iguchi. I’m twenty-five years old. I’ve only been a teacher for three years—”
As he talked, Saiki heard “pervert” in everyone’s heads. Yare yare.
“I hope we will become more than just teacher and students,” said Mr. Iguchi. He meant a friendly bond, but with his face?
“Mr. Iguchi, stop harassing us!” shouted some girls. In an instant, all of the class—save Saiki and (Y/N)—were in an uproar.
“Keep three hundred feet away from Teruhashi!” shouted the men.
            “I didn’t say anything—three hundred?” she said.
“He can’t even be in the classroom,” said Saiki.
“I wonder how he’ll teach,” said (Y/N) brightly.
“Stand back.” Saiko’s voice sounded at the door, and he opened it. He huffed as Nendou stood beside him. “I don’t want people to think we came together.”
            “They’re late,” said (Y/N).
“Saiko can afford it, and Nendou is dumb,” said Saiki matter-of-factly.
“Who are you?” said Saiko, crossing his arms and looking at Mr. Iguchi.
“You have a funny face!” laughed Nendou.
“So does he,” said Saiki, and (Y/N) giggled.
Mr. Iguchi smiled. “Ms. Shima is in charge of Class 2. I’ll be your homeroom teacher starting today. You guys are twenty minutes late.”
“Sorry, sorry. I was chasing after a cat,” said Nendou. “Will you let me go this time?”
Yikes! Mr. Iguchi was scared of the tall boy.
“He’s an idiot, but he scares him,” said Saiki.
Mr. Iguchi cleared his throat. “Five or ten minutes can be excused, but twenty minutes is unacceptable.”
“It can’t be helped, then,” sighed Saiko. He tossed a pile of cash into Mr. Iguchi’s hands. “I don’t care about that big dumb guy, but you’d better obey me, poor face.”
Mr. Iguchi straightened. “I can let you go this time—”
(Y/N) scowled at Saiko getting away with things as usual.
“—for attempted to buy me off.” He held out the money. “I won’t treat you with favoritism. You’re late, too.”
“He’s my favorite teacher,” said (Y/N) decisively.
Instantly, everyone stood. “Mr. Iguchi, you’re the best! I’m sorry! You didn’t even give in to Saiko!”
“They finally understand him,” said Saiki, nodding in satisfaction.
“No problem, I’m glad you accept me.” Mr. Iguchi smiled wider.
Everyone froze. His face had gotten creepy again.
“Well…they almost understood him,” said (Y/N), shrugging.
l
A while later…
“Remember, class, we have physical exams today,” said Mr. Iguchi. “The girls will have medical exams in the nurse’s office first. Boys are heading to the gym first. (L/N), you can choose the girl you go with first.”
“Got it,” said (Y/N), smiling. Obviously, they were going to follow Saiki.
l
            “What a drag,” said Nendou.
“I have to agree,” said Saiki as he was measured.
“Don’t move. Saiki, 167 centimeters,” said the doctor.
            “Average?” said (Y/N).
“Average,” confirmed Saiki, just as he liked it.
            (Y/N) chuckled.
“Buddy, you and pinky haven’t gotten any taller,” said Nendou. “Now, my turn.” He stood straight and poked out his chin.
“Nendou, 191 centimeters,” reported the doctor.
“What? The same as last year?” Nendou was disappointed.
Of course. We’re stuck in a time loop, thought Saiki. Long story short, until he could stop a volcano from erupting and destroying the world, he just reset the universe every year.
            “Kaidou, 159 centimeters.”
“I shrank?” cried Kaidou. “Try it again!”
            “159 centimeters.”
            “No way!” pouted Kaidou.
So, no one really changes each year. And no one gets suspicious because I control their minds.
“Hey, Kusuo, don’t you think it’s weird we don’t change heights like, ever?” said (Y/N).
I forget they’re observative at the strangest times. “I’ll explain when we’re not busy.”
“Wait, you’re doing it?” said (Y/N), tilting their head.
            Saiki nodded.
“Must be serious, then,” said (Y/N). Saiki preferred to keep to himself, after all.
Saiki nodded again. As always, they understood.
“Stop laughing!” said Kaidou while Nendou chuckled.
“Hey, there’s Mr. Pervert,” said Nendou.
            “So what?” said Kaidou.
“I just wonder what Mr. Pervert is doing,” said Nendou.
“Do you have to call him that?” said (Y/N).
Mr. Iguchi stood outside looking around strangely before walking around the corner of the school building.
“He seems to be in a hurry,” said Kaidou. “Hey, what do you think about him?”
“I think you guys are being mean to him just because he looks weird,” said (Y/N).
“He has a funny face!” said Nendou cheerfully.
“Not his face, his personality!” said Kaidou.
“Aaah!” A girl’s scream pierced the air.
            “What was that?” said Kaidou.
“It came from the school building!” said another student.
            “I hope everyone’s okay,” said (Y/N) worriedly.
“Looks like there was a Peeping Tom!” said a boy, the words quickly spreading through the crowd.
Saiki was very glad that (Y/N) had decided to go with the boys first (he would, after all, have to kill the pervert who tried to look at them wrong).
“Is Teruhashi alright?!” said the rest of the boys. “Is Teruhashi safe? What about her?”
“Do these people not care about the other girls?” said (Y/N), hands on their hips in disapproval.
“They’re the real creeps,” said Saiki.
“Has anyone seen anything suspicious?” said a student.
“Anything suspicious?” Kaidou frowned. “Ah! Mr. Pervert!”
“Oh, this isn’t going to be good for him,” said (Y/N).
“No.” Everyone was going to blame him, real evidence or not.
l
Back in class, the girls were outraged, and the boys were equally upset (thought most were just angry on Teruhashi’s behalf).
“Even though he failed, he tried to see me naked!” said a girl.
“The peeper almost got away with it!” said another.
“Are you alright?” said (Y/N), looking at their friends.
Miko scoffed. “As if I’d let anyone get a look at me.”
“I didn’t notice anything, but that’s scary,” said Yumehara.
“I didn’t realize anything was wrong,” said Mera (she had snuck snacks).
“I was about to change when everyone started screaming,” said Teruhashi. “But we’re alright.”
“Hey, where have you been?” said students as Mr. Iguchi entered the classroom.
“There was a peeper!” said the girls.
“Oh, they’re not making the assumption it’s him,” said (Y/N), pleasantly surprised.
“Yet,” said Saiki, realistic (pessimistic) as ever. If Kaidou blurts out that Mr. Iguchi was going in the direction of the nurse’s office, that won’t end well. Saiki could tell from Mr. Iguchi’s thoughts that he wasn’t guilty. Although he had been outside the nurse’s office, he had just been passing by and heading to the washroom.
“Really?” said Mr. Iguchi, truly shocked.
“Go get him!” cried the girls. “You have to catch the peeper!”
“I’ll do whatever it takes to catch him!” said Mr. Iguchi.
Is he going to search for the peeper? So it wasn’t him at all? thought Kaidou.
“Leave it to me,” said Mr. Iguchi.
I feel bad for suspecting him, thought Kaidou. He glanced over and saw Mr. Iguchi’s “determined” expression. Ah! Pervert! I need to find out what he’s hiding! He stood.
Hold on. Saiki touched Kaidou’s shoulder.
            “Saiki?”
“Yo!” Nendou grinned at Mr. Iguchi as the teacher walked to the door and bumped into him. “Going to the nurse’s office again?”
            “Uh-oh,” said (Y/N).
            “Yare yare.”
Again? I never visited the nurse’s office, thought Mr. Iguchi.
“Did he go to the nurse’s office?” exclaimed a student.
“Yeah, you headed to the nurse’s office during the physical exams,” said Nendou, looking at Mr. Iguchi.
I was just heading to the washroom, thought Mr. Iguchi.
“Nendou must have misunderstood,” said a classmate.
“Right, Mr. Iguchi wasn’t involved,” said another, nodding.
“Mr. Iguchi, you have to explain!” said the class.
“I don’t think he’s getting out of this,” said (Y/N).
“Definitely not,” said Saiki. “So the only thing left to do is sacrifice Toritsuka.”
            “Don’t tell me he was—”
“Yes.” Toritsuka was trying to be a peeping tom. “And guess what?”
            “What?” asked (Y/N).
“He’s still on the roof,” said Saiki. He glanced at his classmates.
“We should go and see if there’s any evidence on the roof,” said a student, the thought planted by Saiki. “If there was a peeping tom, that’s where they’d be.”
“Right! We’ll be able to track the pervert down,” said another classmate.
They headed out, and (Y/N) sighed.
“I’d feel bad for Toritsuka, but if he’s being a creep, he deserves the consequences he brings upon himself,” said (Y/N).
“He’s a sacrifice for the greater good,” said Saiki. Of course, this was personal. If (Y/N) had been with the girls, Toritsuka would have nearly been a pervert with them. Saiki did not forgive that.

I admittedly haven't watched your stream playthrough of TGAA games, mostly because I was playing through them with my fiancé very slowly, but we just finished them and I was curious what your opinion on them was? My fiancé and I enjoyed them but we both felt like they were pretty... Tame, compared to mainline AA. Like, there wasn't really any insane twists that shook the characters to their cores, everything wrapped up so neatly for everyone, it felt too easy, in a way? Also the big bad was wayyyyy too predictable.
I'd recommend checking out these amazing animatics that Infamouslydorky did of our playthrough!
youtube
My feelings re: The Great Ace Attorney games are sort of complicated, so this answer's going to be kind of long. I'll keep it spoiler-free, though.
I think they have the best main cast of any AA game. The music, character designs, and quality of life are basically the best they've ever been. That's really cool. I really love a lot of the one-off characters too. Enoch Drebber, Pat and Rollie, and the little plague mask coroner girl are huge stand-outs for me.
However, I think Shu Takumi has a lot of... foibles as a writer, and the way they manifest in these games is more evident and more obnoxious than basically anything else he's ever made.
I've played every game he's ever made and I can tell you that Shu Takumi writes the mysteries and twists in his stories first before anything else. I think he has a great sense of when he wants the twists to hit for the audience and he's great at figuring out where a twist will hit in a case... but he's remarkably bad at making character motivations match up to the story he's trying to tell.
In particular, he's awful at giving characters reasons not to tell each other things. 90% of a time your protagonist in a Shu Takumi game will ask a completely reasonable question to an ally, and the ally will avoid answering simply because it's not time for the player to know the answer yet. This is an issue in every game he's ever made. Even his best game Ghost Tric, is plagued by this. i.e. The way Lynne refuses to tell you her goals even though you're a literal ghost who's saved her life 3+ times in the same evening. Like, what do you have to lose, Lynne? Do you think this ghost is going to leak your goals to the police? No, it's just in service of delaying information so the player gets that information when it really hits. My friend circle has some to refer to characters in video games not telling you information for no reason as "Shu Takumi-ing".
Because most AA games are really silly, this isn't usually a gamebreaking issue. Why isn't your ally telling you information that would allow you to help them? Well, they're stupid, that's why. This is a game where you get possessed by dead people to get evidence and cross-examine a parrot. It's not serious. Everyone's a little bit on the stupid spectrum.
That's not really the case with TGAA. The games still have silly moments, but the characters are very explicitly smart. Kazuma is meant to be a legal prodigy on an exchange program. Susato is incredibly well-read and her father is a well-traveled and well-respected man of the law himself. Iris is a genius. Sholmes is whacky, but he's supposed to be cannier than he lets on.
Because of that, it's really noticeable when Shu Takumi doesn't know how to delay information or elegantly set up an interpersonal conflict. His fallback is always to have a character drink The Stupid Juice. For Case X, this character is suddenly stupid and does stuff they'd never do. For Case Y, it's someone else.
When you're dealing with Larry Butz and Lotta Hart, you come to expect that sort of thing. The inconsistency is part of their character. But when Susato can't identify her own father sleeping on the couch because... I dunno, I guess she landed on her head when she fell out of bed this morning, what the hell are we doing here, gang? Why are we doing this? Some people in our chat were like "This is a joke". I don't know. Is it? it really a joke if it takes 20 minutes of real gameplay to SOLVE THE MYSTERY instead of walking over and look at him, like any rational person would do?
I also can't go into too many details about this without spoiling things, but I really really hate the core overarching plot of this duology. I would bet almost all the money in my bank account that Shu Takumi didn't have the details of the second game 100% ironed out by the time he wrote the first. They don't lead into each other at all and so many characters' actions need to be unfathomably stupid for everything to work out the way it does. It kind of makes me retroactively dislike a lot of the cast. Especially Sholmes.
Also the assistant Van Zieks gets in the 2nd game is unfathomably bad. Everything about that setup and how that character acts is my least favorite thing about the game and maybe my least favorite thing that ever happens in the entire franchise. It makes me SO angry.
The games are still pretty good though.

I've seen a couple of people do stuff like this, so I'm gonna take a stab at it. My thoughts on every character so far! (Long post, so the opinions are all under the cut)
Darumi
Tumblr media
She feels like an audience insert of sorts, with her immediate mention of death games and her outfit looking like something a stereotypical "2020 danganronpa cosplayer" would wear.
She's a bit unhinged from what we've so far, but she also seems like she'll be a lot of fun to watch on screen, and isn't that what's most important?
Definite and overwhelming red herring for something, however. Unsure for what yet, but she screams red herring to me.
Also, the fanart of her has been spectacular. Keep it up, lads.
Eito
Tumblr media
I'm sure we've all seen *the scene*, so there's that. If that's not out of context somehow and consensual, then- yay? Good for the yaoi fans.
I immediately liked him when I first saw his design, he just *looks* nice. I'd let him hold my drink at a party. I've read somewhere that he becomes Takumi's closest friend, and I dearly hope that that's true, because that means we get lots of Eito content.
I'm also unbelievably excited for that one ending where he inevitably goes off the deep end and does something absolutely horrific. There has to be one. Manifesting it. I love watching my favourite characters commit atrocities.
Gaku
Tumblr media
Can I just say how different he specifically looks in his two different outfits? I didn't even recognise him when his sprite of him in the uniform was revealed. His casual outfit is so silly, and his uniform looks the most like he's about to beat my ass. The gattling gun also helps, probably.
That aside, I don't feel that strongly about him. He's probably a nice enough guy, nothing else to say about him.
Hiruko
Tumblr media
She's actually drop dead gorgeous. One of the best casual outfits.
Moving on, I think she's the one who's the leader of the squadron? She seems to have experience with facing the enemies, and she's still alive, so I admire the heck out of her for it. She also has an axe that is bigger than her; you can have all the gattling guns or scythes or floating knives in the world, but nothing bests a good old-fashioned ginormous axe.
Ima
Tumblr media
Goofy face, what's he looking at me like that for?
This guy has a bit of a reputation, I know, but I'm choosing to have faith.
A sister complex is not inherently sexual or romantic (although it often is) and I find complicated and toxic family relationships in media quite interesting.
I am, however, almost entirely leaning on Uchikoshi here. Clover and Snake's sibling relationship was extremely well written, and I'm hoping that even if he does feel romantically inclined towards his sister, it's just as well written. I'm choosing hope.
Also, his weapon is phenomenal. I might need to make a weapons tierlist at some point.
Kako
Tumblr media
She's a cutiepie, and I haven't missed the fact that she and her brother have angel/devil symbolism with their weapons.
Apparently, the two of them are a bit younger than many of the other students, so that should be interesting- Takumi I know is 17/18. Apparently, they're still in Junior High, so 14/15? I wonder if there'll be any split because of the age groups?
I want nothing but the best for her and I hope she gets it. And doesn't die too many times.
Karua
Tumblr media
Likely the one this story revolves around, and one of the more mysterious characters.
I'm curious about her, but I don't really feel anything that strong about her. I am fairly certain that Takumi will tear apart reality itself for her, so she'll probably be a pretty nice character. And hopefully, NOT a twist villain.
Kurara
Tumblr media
Absolutely wild to have a masked character in a game that Uchikoshi is writing, I'm sure that has never happened before.
She's filthy rich and has a tomato for a head, I- really don't know what to say about her. Her weapon is hilarious to me, "rich girl above all rich girls" and has a shovel for a weapon. I respect the grind, at least.
I'm sure in true Zero Escape fashion, we'll unmask her in one timeline and use that information in another.
Kyoshika
Tumblr media
I genuinely have nothing to say about her- I learned she existed a couple days ago? Had never noticed her before, honestly.
She has a cool outfit in any case.
I just remembered there's a 10 image max on the app, so I'll continue this in a reblog

NANA Analysis: the bathtub theory, love and self-destruction.
TW: suicide and self-harm
⚠️SPOILERS
Tumblr media
This isn’t a topic widely discussed due to the abrupt hiatus of NANA, but our dear Ai Yazawa loves to work with foreshadowing, and we have enough clues to consider that something really bad happened between the two timelines.
Nana is a realistic work, and we can see representations of self-destructive behaviors in many characters. When it comes to Nana Osaki and Nana Komatsu (whom I'll refer to as Hachi to make things easier), we can see these behaviors manifesting with anyone they love.
Due to her abandonment trauma, when Nana feels love for someone this can bring out her worst side: possessiveness, selfishness, jealousy, and envy. Ren is Nana’s first love, and through him, she forms a special connection with music and be singer becomes her dream. However, Nana considers her dreams and her pride more important than anything else.
For Hachi, love is more idealized… she follows the ‘formula’: fall in love > date > get married > have children > happily ever after. But Hachi doesn't just idealize love, she also idealizes who she loves.
So I think that ‘love’ becomes a self-destructive emotion for both of them. When Nana feels abandoned by those she loves (Ren and Hachi < mainly this woman), she experiences mental gaps (forgets about what she done and what happen) and also hyperventilates. Nana briefly talks about her mental gaps when she remembers the memory of her mother left her behind in the snow (while wearing red heels, which Nana realizes may not be a reliable memory). Also, she and Ren have this toxic relationship with no perspective for future, which hurts them a lot.
Then… we have Hachi, who has an insatiable desire to be loved, and this becomes ‘the compass’ for all the bad decisions she’ll make throughout her journey. Groomed by an older man in high school, moves to Tokyo with many dreams and ends up getting cheated on, and meets Takumi. Well, you already know the rest. The problem with this Nana isn’t particularly in how she loves people; she can be selfish at times, but her love is genuine, she’s not the priority. Like Nana Osaki says she’s a ‘puppy’: you kick the puppy, it gets hurt, but then the puppy always comes back to you. Hachi’s problem is that she has no self-love, pride won't be a problem, she's able to see herself as the villain in any situation (even with Takumi).
The relationships between Ren and Nana, and Hachi and Takumi are toxic in different ways. We can see both Nanas struggling with the frustration of these relationships. Nana hurts her pride so she can have some control over Ren, but it doesn’t really work.
Nana: [You can't make people do what you want. Even if you cry... or shout... or cling to them.]
And even though Hachi tries to follow this 'formula', she can’t fill the emptiness inside her, living a life full of regrets.
Hachi: [It's like the jealousy of a woman who wasn't capable of being happy... Always acting on stage, alone, running in circles no matter what she did.]
Let’s get to the point: What happened in the bathtub? I’ll start with the numerous foreshadowings about self-harm and drowning in water. I've lost count of how many times Junko and Kyosuke talked about this:
Kyosuke: [That’s scary… she might even slit her wrists, who knows.]
Junko: [Girl... I was knocking so hard for so long. I was scared you’d slit your wrists with a razor blade! (I could see it all... Blood spurting out...)]
and there's more and more... let's skip
So for some reason, everyone is convinced that Hachi is going to cut her wrists because of a heartbreak, which never even crosses her mind lol, as we can see she had other plans:
Hachi: [That night... If Nana hadn’t been there for me... I would have thrown myself into the Tama river. I’m sure of that.]
The irony is… when it comes to representations of drowning or anything related to water, Nana is the focus. We have this scene in manga, and in anime opening, we see a lot of scenes of Nana drowning.
Tumblr media
The bathtub is more symbolic between Nana and Ren; Ren was constantly using the bathtub to ‘drown in drugs’, Reira and Takumi seem aware of this. But again, the bathtub is also extremely symbolic between Nana and Hachi, we can see some intimate moments there. And of course, Ai Yazawa wants to make us freak out. When we are convinced that Nana is the one who got hurt in the bathtub, it relates back to Hachi when she talks to Miu:
Tumblr media
Later in the ‘present’ timeline, we’ll also see Nobu worried about Hachi while se prepares a bath for him, but Hachi is someone who could be greatly affected by a possible suicide attempt from Nana. Nana also has that death pact with Ren, in last chapters, we can see that her situation it’s not good, she’s still clinging to love to live, in this case, holding on to Hachi. To be fair, Hachi is also in a terrible situation, she’s pregnant; her hormones are all over the place, and the postpartum it’s cruel.
But I don’t think Ai Yazawa would repeat what’s happened with Shin’s mother, although Hachi is very close to that role now; after all, no matter what others think, ‘I’m his mother’. The situation of Shin’s mother it’s a parallel to Hachi’s pregnancy at certain points, especially since Yazawa wants to keep the mystery of the baby’s paternity.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Nana, all we know is that she disappeared and everyone thought she was dead, with rumors like ‘She died at sea’.
Nana: [Any place was fine with me… As long as I could see the sea. I can die whenever I want… As long as I know the sea’s nearby. I came here… Looking for a place to die. So why… am I still here?]
The only doubt in my mind is that the women of the Osaki family are naturally runaways. Nana could have simply run away from the start. But she’s still the strong candidate, since she mentions that Hachi saved her life and since BOTH are named Nana, I wouldn’t be surprised if Hachi was just a misleading clue all this time. Junko and Kyosuke calls Hachi for her name (Nana), but maybe I’m just overthinking.
Is getting long, so to wrap up, I want to talk about the meaning of the name Ren (蓮), especially since we have two characters named Ren in Nana. The lotus flower in Buddhism represents the belief in samsara, the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Also, is often seen as a symbol of purity because it rises and blooms beautifully above the muddy waters from which it grows. This imagery represents the idea of achieving spiritual purity despite difficult circumstances.
Nana’s Ren is dead, and given everything he represented to her, it’s entirely understandable that she feels lost. On the other hand, Hachi’s Ren has yet to be born, and it’ll likely be her greatest point of development. Although Nana seems strong enough to overcome anything, she’s not, while Hachi, who is seen as fragile, manages to persist through difficulties. It’s as if their roles initially invert: Hachi gains strength, and Nana weakens (I'm just making a comparison with the beginning of the story). Nana and Hachi continue to live with the hope that ‘Life is about getting knocked down over and over, but still getting up each time. If you keep getting up, you win’. This is something Nana learned from Ren and taught to Hachi. It’s simply beautiful how, despite everything, their love for each other is what keeps them strong, even when apart; love has become a form of healing for Nana and Hachi.
I've wanted to write about this for a while, now that I’ve read NANA 777 times, I can talk about it with more confidence hehe.

Valentine Headcanons about (almost) every fictional character I love 💕
happy Valentine’s Day to everyone! I hope you know you are appreciated and cared for! Here are some Headcanons on how my fictional crushes would spend Valentine’s Day 💓
featuring: Daiki aomine, Sasuke Uchiha, Takumi Fujiwara, Rindou Haitani, Jean Kirstein, Ryusui Nanami, Spike Spiegel, Hisashi Mistui, Matt Holt, Taehoon Seong, and Damian Wayne
Daiki Aomine:
He’s playing basketball 💀
You’re 100000% sure he forgot what today was because when you gave him a handmade lunch AND a net for catching bugs he just stares at it like “what is this for?”
So as you sadly sit on the bench watching him play
But then he falls idiot
You sigh and walk over to him. “You ok Daiki?”
He groans and kneels with a bracelet in his hand blushing
“H-happy Valentine’s Day…”
You’re speechless. Only for a short moment of course, you quickly begin laughing your ass off
“W-what’s so funny?! Damn Kise telling me to do dumb shit…”
“I love it Daiki! Where’d you get it?”
“S-satski taught me…”
This man has the largest amount of pride but will always throw it aside for you!
Sasuke Uchiha:
You both would either stay home or be somewhere private
You both have this secret spot in the woods that you guys have been going to ever since you were kids
So it’s no surprise on your 15th valentines together that’s where the two of you would be
With the little snacks and dinner entrees the both of you made to surprise each other and the nice lighting and river it was perfect
This is also the time he’s most vulnerable with you; kissing your hands, neck, cheek, arms, and of course your lips ;)
He whispers sweet things in your ear and tells you how he’s never loved like this and won’t with anyone else
“You’re my everything (y/n). I look at you and see a future brighter than all the stars out tonight.”
It’s safe to say he only and will only ever love you
Takumi Fujiwara:
You’ve always went on Tofu runs when you could with Takumi, and it was no different for Valentine’s Day
When he arrives at your house he’s standing there with a small bouquet
“Is there anything you want to do today?” He asks you as he drives to the hotel
You shake your head. “It doesn’t really matter as long as I’m with you!”
He can’t help but smile
When he’s done with the deliveries he pulls into a parking lot in front of Lake Akina
“Can w-we just sit here for a while then? I really just want to be with you.”
You smile at him and lean your head as close as you can to his shoulder. “I’d love that Takumi.”
Rindou Haitani:
Rindou takes you dancing
You both love to dance so it was a win
But of course after that he takes you home
You both cuddle on each other and watch random movies
Rindou has the finest liquor out and the sweetest chocolate and all your other favorite sweets
He kisses up and down your shoulder as you sit in his lap holding one of his hands
“You’re mine (y/n). And you’re gonna be for my next valentine and the one after that…”
Jean Kirstein
He cooks for you!
He makes you sit there patiently while he scrambles around creating the perfect meal
“Jean, i don’t mind helping you. I think it’ll be a lot easier if-“
“I got this (y/n)! Just sit there and look beautiful! Tell me about your day. You know I love to hear your voice.”
After he’s FINALLY done cooking, you dine together in the not so fancy living area, but the both of you don’t care
Jean did his best to clean up and set the sweet, loving tone and that’s all that matters to you.
“I love you (y/n). Thank you for making me so happy.”
Ryusui Nanami:
This man goes all out💀
As soon as you wake up it’s the most perfect breakfast in bed
He has to leave to work but literally leaves you his black card to treat yourself and constantly has people arriving with beautiful flowers every 5 minutes
He comes back for lunch and talks to you
“Has your valentines been well? I’ll make sure that you have the best day ev-“
“I really like all the things Ryusui really i do, but…I just really want to spend time with you…”
He pauses
Then calls in like it’s nothing!
The rest of the day is the two of  you lay in bed together and act all cutesy!
“I’m glad you’re my valentines dear. It’s been one amazing day.”
Spike Spiegel:
This broke man does his best I’ll give him that
He buys you flowers and takes you to a pretty nice restaurant. Nothing too fancy but it’s nicer than you normally go to
He lets you order first and gets him something small, which is weird for this man
You both talk for hours the waitstaff is so annoyed
After you two are FINALLY done you both walk back to the Bebop
“Why did you eat so little Spike? You’re normally chowing down!”
He chuckles and keeps walking, “wasn’t that hungry.”
“Come on spike, we’re practically married, I can tell when you’re lying!”
He sighs and mumbled something
“What?”
“I wanted to make sure I had enough money for you to eat…”
You stop in your tracks
“Spike…”
You kiss him lovingly
“Thank you Spike. I love you so much.”
He smiles, “ditto.”
Hisashi Mitsui
You’re probably his first valentines tbh
He waits at a cafe with flowers in his hand
When you show up he’s bright red. You’re not even wearing and saying anything spectacular he’s just so nervous lol
You sit next to each other and talk snack and laugh about everything and anything
After the cafe you head to the park
And after that you go to little stores you see along the way
Mitsui buys you a stuffed animal you were looking at and you bought him a chain necklace he glanced at
It was a really great valentines, especially since it was first
“T-thanks for being my valentine (y/n). I’m glad i get to spend it with you.”
Matt Holt:
He makes this super cool heart shaped projector thing!
He hands you this heart
It rises shifts into being a projector that displays all of your favorite memories together
It shows the new inductee dance and how the two of you jumping around without a care in the world
Then it shows a lazy night of the both of you “studying” for an exam as the camera zooms into Matt’s face and your giggles from behind the camera
And one of your favorite memories of all, your day at the beach together. Throwing water at each other, making sand castles, resting you head in his shoulder as the sun goes down
“Matt…this is beautiful… I-I’m speechless…!”
“It’s alright.” He begins, “I know what you’re gonna say. I love you too.”
Taehoon Seong
Mans has no idea what to do
He acts like he doesn’t care as Hansu tries to give him ideas but really he’s terrified of messing something up
So when the day comes you hear a knock on the door you’re surprised to see a nicely dressed Taehoon with a rose in his hand
“Happy Valentine’s Day idiot.”
You smile and kiss his cheek. “Thank you Tae Tae!”
You Motion for him to come in
When he does there’s a nice breakfast for two in the dining room
“I know you don’t like to go out Tae, so I thought we could stay in for the day.”
Oh my gosh that sounds perfect
“Heh, I guess so. At least I’m with you.”
Damian Wayne:
Spoils you with acts of service
As soon as you wake up you’re greeted with the smell of a nice breakfast in the dining room
Then you sit in bed as he feeds you chocolate cover strawberries, watching silly movies and drawing pictures for each other
At the end of the day he prepares a bath for the both of you
You wash each other not like that weirdos and you even blow some bubbles at him
When it’s finally time to sleep he massages your back and whispers about how much he loves you
Then of course you fall asleep on his chest as he holds you
“Goodnight beloved. I hope you understand how much I love you.”
