Bechloe Week 2021 - Day 7

Wait for me A/N: High School AU

Beca let out a scream and threw her phone against the wall. Her best friend, Stacie, flinched when she heard pieces of the phone hit the floor.

"Lying bitch," Beca cried. "Wait for me, she said. I love you, she said. You're the only one I want, she said. Everything she said was a lie."

"Beca," Stacie said. "It might not be what you think."

"I don't know what you were looking at," Beca said. "But all I saw was her kissing some guy."

"Beca," Stacie said. "Chloe loves you. Everybody knows that. Talk to her; find out what's really going on."

"I don't need to talk to her," Beca said. "It's obvious she's cheating on me. What other explanation could there be?"

"I don't know," Stacie said. "But, I do know Chloe, and she's no cheater."

"Why are you defending her?" Beca asked. "Her cheating is right there in full view for everyone to see."

Beca started crying and Stacie pulled her to her.

"I'm not defending her," Stacie said, hugging Beca. "I'm just saying make sure what you think happened really did happen before you say or do something you might regret."

~~ BeChloe Week 2021 - Day 7 ~~

Chloe Beale was sitting outside her favorite bistro in Paris, the City of Light, with her roommates. Conversations were happening around her, but she was not paying attention. She was lost in thought. Worrying because her girlfriend, Beca, had not returned any of her texts or been answering her calls all day. She wasn't used to not having any contact with Beca whatsoever since they got together during Junior Year.

Chloe put her elbow on the table, resting her chin in her hand. She let out a heavy sigh.

"Everything okay, Chloe?" her roommate, Trish, asked.

"No," Chloe said, sighing again. "Beca hasn't returned any of my texts or answered any of my calls today. I'm worried that something might have happened to her."

Trish smiled and looked around the table. The four girls became fast friends when they were assigned as roommates for the summer. They were all into art and had won a coveted spot for a summer art study abroad program.

And, all the girls knew about Chloe's girlfriend. How could they not? Chloe talked about her all the time.

"I'm sure it's nothing to worry about," Trish said.

"Trish is right, Chloe," Dianna said. "Beca probably forgot to charge her phone again."

"If you're really worried about her," Sandy said. "Why don't you call your friend Stacie. Isn't she the one you said was Beca's best friend? She'd most likely know what was going on with Beca."

Chloe dropped her hand and sat up straight. "That's a great idea! I'll call Stacie."

Chloe pulled her phone out and scrolled through her contacts until she found Stacie's name. She pressed send and put her phone to her ear.

"It's ringing," Chloe told the girls around her. "Oh, hey, Stace-"

"You've got some explaining to do, Chloe," Stacie said as soon as she heard Chloe's voice.

"What are you talking about?" Chloe said, furrowing her brows.

"Beca saw the picture and is an emotional mess," Stacie said.

"What picture?" Chloe asked.

"The picture of you kissing some guy," Stacie said. "Beca thinks you're cheating on her."

"What?!" Chloe screeched into the phone. "I would never-." Chloe stopped and took a breath. "I would never cheat on Beca. She should know that. You both should know that. And, I have no idea what picture you're even talking about."

Hearing Chloe's part of the conversation, Sandy pulled out her phone and started scrolling through social media.

"I didn't say you did," Stacie said. "And, I told Beca as much. But, she said the picture says you did."

"I did not cheat on her!" Chloe screamed into the phone.

Sandy held her phone up to Chloe. "She's probably talking about this picture."

Chloe took Sandy's phone and her mouth dropped open. "I did not kiss that guy!"

"No, but he kissed you," Trish said. "Remember that party about two weeks ago? Some guy grabbed you and kissed you as part of a dare."

"Oh, my God!" Chloe said. "Stacie, did you hear that?"

"I did," Stacie said. "Now you just have to explain it to Beca."

"Do you know where Beca is?" Chloe asked. "She's not answering my calls or my texts."

"When she saw the picture, she threw her phone against the wall and broke it," Stacie said. "Her dad is being a hardass and won't get her a new one until she earns the money to pay for it."

Chloe sighed and tears came to her eyes. "What am I going to do, Stacie? I need to talk to her so I can explain."

"Calm down, Chloe," Stacie said. "I'll get her to come over and have her call you from my phone, okay?"

"Okay," Chloe said. "Thanks, Stacie."

Chloe ended the call and wiped the tears from her eyes.

"So, what's happening?" Dianna asked.

"Stacie is going to have Beca call me from her phone," Chloe said. "Beca broke her phone and hasn't replaced it yet."

"That's good, right?" Sandy asked.

"I hope so," Chloe said.

~~ BeChloe Week 2021 - Day 7 ~~

"Come over, Beca," Stacie pleaded. "I talked to Chloe and it's just as I said. She did not cheat on you. Yes, the picture shows someone kissing her, but it's easily explained. I think you need to talk to her to ease your mind."

Beca let out a breath. "I'll be there in ten."

"See you then," Stacie said, but Beca had already ended the call.

Ten minutes later, true to her word, Beca was at Stacie's door.

"What did she tell you about the picture?" Beca asked as soon as they were in Stacie's room.

"Some guy grabbed her and kissed her because of some stupid dare," Stacie said. "Chloe did not kiss him; he kissed her. She doesn't know who took the picture or posted it."

"God, I'm such an idiot," Beca said, running her hand through her hair. "I should have known Chloe wouldn't cheat on me. I trust her with everything I have. I don't even know why I went there; she's never given me any reason to doubt her love for me."

"I told her I'd get you to call her from my phone," Stacie said. "Why don't you call her now?"

"I need to come up with something special," Beca said. "To let her know I'm sorry and that I love her more than anything."

"Do what you do best," Stacie said. "You know she falls in love with you more each time you sing to her."

"What should I sing?"

"I have an idea."

Stacie jumped up and ran to her closet. She came back out, carrying her guitar in one hand and sheet music in the other.

"Sing her this," Stacie said, handing the guitar and music to Beca.

Beca looked over the sheet music and smiled.

"This is perfect!" Beca said, handing the sheet music back to Stacie. "I actually know how to place this on the guitar."

Beca stood and started strumming the guitar, getting a feel for the chords. She smiled at Stacie.

"I have an idea," Beca said. "You call Chloe and tell her I have a message for her. Then hold the phone out and I'll start to sing to her."

"Okay," Stacie said, picking up her phone and calling Chloe's number.

"Beca?" Chloe answered.

"Chloe, it's me," Stacie said. "Beca has a message for you."

Stacie held out the phone and Beca started playing and singing. She skipped parts that did not convey what she wanted to and only sang the parts that did.

Beca set the guitar down and took Stacie's phone. Stacie smiled as she got up and left the room so Beca could have some privacy while talking to Chloe.

"Babe," Beca said. "I love you so much and I know you would never cheat on me. I don't know why I even thought you did. I'm so sorry."

Chloe sniffled. "I love you, too. And I'm sorry I didn't tell you about that guy. But after I slapped him, he apologized. I didn't think it was that big of a deal and forgot about it until Trish reminded me."

"I miss you," Beca said softly. "The next three weeks are going to be torture without you."

"I miss you, too," Chloe said. "I can't wait to get back home and see you."

"I will be right here waiting for you," Beca sang, causing Chloe to chuckle softly.

"You're such a dork," Chloe said.

"That may be true," Beca retorted. "But I'm your dork."

"Always," Chloe said.

"And forever," Beca said.

#11 Neighbour AU + #41 Big Damn Kiss =

Herakles & Sadık are both recent university graduates from Athens & İstanbul, but find themselves lacking opportunities to work in their homecountries. So they go abroad to try their luck elsewhere.

Both end up in Germany. Herakles' is living with the Simonides old family friends who've either migrated decades ago or are living as expats in Germany. Natasa and Ibrahim welcome Herakles with open arms. He immediately makes friends with their twins, only a few years younger than him. Omar and Timothea, as they're called, are still living with their parents while they're attending the local university. They're not living in luxury, but they're happy.

Sadık manages to get in contact with Havva Be Yauno via some university acquaintances. They migrated to Germany a while ago, after being kicked out working in local administration. Sadık gets to share a small flat in the building Havva manages for the landlord, together with a Kurdish Woman called Dilan Taş. After some initial hiccups, the two become close friends.

The hiccups with their neighbours next door are less initial. No, that's a lie - The Simonides don't mind their new neighbours, even invite them for coffee and tea. Omar pretty quickly evolves a crush on Dilan.

It's just Herakles and Sadık who keep butting heads.

They argue about petty semantics that only people who studied 'breadless art' would care about. Herakles complains that they're too loud at night. Sadık says Herakles is dragging stray cats into the house by leaving out food & now the whole staircase stinks. There's always something.

As time goes on, they get over themselves a little. Too busy with their own life. Sadık feeds the cats with scraps he gets from the Turkish butcher. Herakles comes over after it's been eerily quiet for weeks and finds out that Sadık's latest odd job makes him work at night. He actually finds him slumped over on the kitchen table when Dilan lets him in before she leaves for work. He goes back and leaves him a package of expensive coffee beans that he had imported from Greece.

One night, they end up together on the university campus. Sitting on the steps surrounding a piece of green near a small river. The city's barely still awake, there's only music, TV and chatter from the dorms. The occassional student crossing after they stayed late at the library.

"What did you actually study?" Sadık asked and put the lighter back into his pocket. It was a cheap one with a wheel. Pain in the ass to get working at this point. His last money had been spent on the cigarettes themselves.

Herakles took a deep breath through his nose. He stared at the water, flowing invisibly except for a few dancing white and orange specks. "Philosophy," he said.

Sadık chuckled and the chuckle quickly became a laugh. "Oh, what a surprise that you couldn't find a job with such a prestigious degree." He grinned and exhaled some smoke.

"And history. Archaeology, Politics, Linguistics, Architecture, Maths... I dipped my toes into physics, too, for a little bit, but couldn't really make it."

Sadık's grin had long faltered. Herakles looked to the river. A smile replaced the initial surprise on Sadık's face. "Oho, a real Renaissance man, aren't you?"

"I like to learn. But all I could do with the few fields I actually managed to acquire a degree in was teach in school. And I'm just not... very good at that." He sighed. Long. "But my dad had stopped paying once I had gotten a job, not that he had ever really paid me enough, mind you, so... I had nowhere to go if I had quit."

"Except here." Sadık wished Herakles would have looked at him. To even catch a glimpse of him, a little bit of that beautiful face illuminated by the pale moon or the orange streetlights.

"Except here." Sadık finally had his wish granted. "What did you study?"

Sadık took a deep breath through his nose. His cigarette was almost finished. "Architecture, too. Tried to get into engineering, but couldn't quite make it. Would have loved to do Literature, frankly. I dunno, get a teaching position at an university, but Anne* always had higher plans for me. Career woman and all that, only wanted the best for me, too, so studying something almost as useless as philosophy wasn't really up for debate."

Now he was the one to stare into the river while he took another drag. He looked at his feet. His shoes could need a good cleaning.

"A smoking literature professor, how cliché," Herakles said and the deep shadows on his face hid how much it reflected the amusement in his voice. He leant in closer to Sadık and put a hand on his thigh. His inner thigh. "All the women would have gone wild over this."

"You think so?" Sadık asked, an expectant but cautious smirk on his face. Rest of his cigarette between his fingers. Herakles' weight on his thigh. He enjoyed his touch. The nights were so cold here in Germany. He leant in for a kiss.

Herakles' hand disappeared. "But I don't kiss smokers." The next moment, Sadık was engulfed in darkness as Herakles stood and blocked the streetlight. He turned and adjusted his jacket. "I have a job interview tomorrow, so see you around, I guess." He turned to just the right angle that Sadık could catch his grin.

He only had a dumbfounded stare as goodbye while Herakles climbed the stairs back to street level.

Some time after this incident, Herakles gets a job as research assisstant at the local university. It's initially only for a project of the history facculty, but he's happy nonetheless.

Now that he knows Sadık enjoys literature, he tells the Simonides one time the topic crops up & they know of a regional literature club, who's holding public reading nights. Any author can show up and read their pieces for 10 Minutes to an audience. Omar tells Dilan, who knows that Sadık writes poetry. She thinks he should go and so after she bullied him into it, they do.

Sadık becomes a regular guest there and ends up meeting other literature enthusiasts, like the Beilschmidts. (He and Gilbert bicker a lot about what the other writes, both trying to take the other down a peg). Sadık never tells Herakles any of this.

So imagine his surprise when he spots him one night in the audience. Afterwards, he's torn between sneaking out and going straight up to him, but Herakles makes the decision for him.

"I didn't know you wrote poetry," Herakles finally broke the awkward stare-off.

"Well, now you do." Sadık closed his book and shoved it under his arm. With a grin, he asked: "You think it's good?"

Despite what followed, Herakles couldn't wipe the smile off his face: "I enjoyed it more than the other guy's crime story, at least."

Sadık gave a short bark of laughter. "Oh, you don't know half of it, Gilbert's been trying to make it work since forever. You got time for a coffee?"

So life's good. They're hanging out, they're working, they're pursueing their passions. One time, the heater in Sadık and Dilan's flat breaks and despite Havva trying their best to get it repaired and them a temporary replacement, they're freezing their asses off. So they go and visit their neighbours, who offer them to sleep over. Sadık is supposed to sleep on the couch. Dilan is supposed to sleep on a mattress in the Simonides' room. Both somehow end up sleeping in a Greek's bed instead. (Herakles has a really small room - his desk is even in the twins' room cuz it wouldn't fit in his own. Sadık asks if he wants coffee and they end up drinking coffee in his bed together and talk until they fall asleep.)

Life could be rosy. That is until one day, the Simonides get into real trouble with the landlord. You see, Natasa and Havva always had a tense relationship, because Natasa doesn't believe in playing by the rules too much, while Havva is a very organized person. However, now some things - like mayhaps Herakles living with them - have gotten directly to the landlord of the building and they're not amused. They threaten to evict them, unless Herakles is going - and want a hefty fine from the Simonides either way.

Getting a new home would mean severe financial strain, not to mention the fine. Omar and Thea may would have to pause or drop their studies. Herakles would have to go back to Greece and start from scratch.

Which he's willing to do, seeing how much trouble he caused the family, even if it breaks his heart. Natasa is having none of it - "I'm not sending you back to your son of a bitch, deadbeat dad, Iraklis" - and insists he stays.

Dilan and Sadık get wind of all of this and they're just as devasted as the family itself. They don't want to lose their neighbours. They don't want this to ruin Omar's and Thea's future. They don't want Herakles to leave. Sadık doesn't want Herakles to leave.

So he pleads with Havva to do something, anything, he'll help them do whatever it takes. Natasa is far too proud to do so. Maybe she even suspects that Havva had something to do with it. (They don't).

And through a lot of negotiation, bribery and running errands, the Simonides get to stay. Omar and Thea can continue pursueing their degrees in peace. Herakles gets to stay and keep working in Germany.

"You... You've spent your past weeks on this?" Herakles' stare pierced Sadık as much as it seemed to look right through him. His mouth hung open, jaw slack. "This was all your doing?"

Sadık took a deep breath, but had to settle for a rather unintelligent "Well, yeah." Herakles' stare unsettled him. He had never seen him at a loss for words before. He was even afraid the other might faint.

A heartbeat later, Sadık was afraid he might faint. Herakles had taken a step towards him, grabbed his face and pressed his lips onto Sadık's. It knocked the breath out of him.

His lips were soft. They were so soft and hot and melded with his own effortlessly.

He kissed back, hands on Herakles' face, fingers buried in the messy hairy. The pressure between them was right, felt right, made them one for a brief eternity.

It ended as abruptly as it had begun. They both took a deep breath through their nose and Herakles panted loudly as he exhaled through the mouthm He swallowed.

"Herakles, I don't think that that's an appropriate enough Thank you", Ibrahim said, but neither of the two barely even registered it. Natasa laughed. Loudly.

"Oh, no, I think it's more than enough," Sadık replied as he stared at the wall next to Herakles' head. His hands were still on his face. "Although..." Ibrahim and Natasa were talking in Greek when he faced Herakles again. She still chuckled while a grin stole itself onto his face. "I think I could go for a little bit more gratitude, after all we've done."

"Don't push it," Herakles warned him. Yet, his cockyness was rewarded with another kiss.

Sadık's tongue slipped between his lips effortlessly. As if it belonged there.

Like Herakles belonged here.

“Are you sure we got all the decorations?” Aang asks, almost fumbling with a bag of gifts to uphold Katara’s banner. “We need decorations, gifts and—“

Toph mumbled something under her breath before taking the gift bags. “Maybe next time I’ll read the list so we’re sure. But, Sugar Queen isn’t picky plus we got the big stuff!” Toph exclaimed, rushing up the stairs hoping it cleared some of Aang’s anxiety. She did attempt several times to talk Aang out of his harmless crush before Katara left to study abroad. Sure, she teases him the most out of everyone but she cared too much to see him fall deeply when it wasn’t reciprocated.

“Yeah, Toph you can read the list,” Aang’s eyes squint as he realizes Toph’s statement. “I fell for it again,” his face falls but he doesn’t hold it for too long before he chuckles watching Toph poke her head over the banister sticking her tongue out at him.

“You gotta get up a bit earlier to beat the blind bandit,” Toph smirks, as she nudges at him realizing he didn’t have his keys. “You left your keys again didn't you?” She rolls her eyes kicking at his shared apartment door with Zuko and Sokka.

“You don’t even get up early, and you snore loudly at that,” Aang complained. The plan was as follows: Aang spends the night at Toph so they could run errands for Katara’s return. “I could hear your snoring in the other room,” Aang inhaled his breath to make a rattling sound and ended it off with slow beats.

Toph shrugged her shoulders. “My apartment, therefore my snores live there too,” They could hear Zuko and Sokka shuffle on the other side of the door. “What’s taking these idiots so long?” Toph raised her foot above the ground to kick at the door again before Zuko appeared on the other side preparing to scold her.

“Aang, next time tell Toph don’t kick at our door. Toph, quit kicking the door,” Zuko’s arms were folded across his chest and his grey shirt and plaid pajama pants both had very large wet spots with little specks of white in the area. “We have a bit of a problem,” Zuko ushered them inside, removing the few bags out of Toph’s hand. As they followed Zuko through the living room which was in shambles—there was an open diaper bag, infant clothes scattered between the couch and chairs. The bright blue car seat remained parked near the couch with a small elephant blanket draped over it.

“I didn’t know me spending the night with Toph meant being replaced with a roommate,” Aang felt Toph wrap her hands around his arm as he guided her over the remaining baby items on the floor.

“Who let you two have a baby and why?” Toph yelped out after nearly tripping over a baby’s instrument that was left on the floor. “I’d sit down but I’m assuming there’s nowhere to sit!”

“Toph, that’s not helpful,” Aang replied, “We need to be supportive,”

“I’m sure this mess isn’t helping this baby either. Which one of you messed up? You should return the baby back!” Toph rested her hands against her hips. “If I get a milk stain on my new shorts you owe me!”

“Don’t blame me,” Zuko fussed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Sokka’s the one who—“

Sokka burst out of their bathroom down the hall, his damped clothes were glued to his body. But, as for the tawny-toned, round-faced infant in his arms, she was having a fit of giggles. “That’s not funny, Kita,” He swayed with Kita wrapped in the towel as reached for Sokka’s disheveled hair on his shoulders. “Zuko, I thought we agreed on not assuming who sweet little Kita belongs too? Now, if you want to be helpful pass me a onesie,”

“Sokka, you can’t be serious!” Zuko grabbed the nearest blue onesie from the couch. “The blue round eyes are a give away,” He flung the piece of clothing with one hand while Sokka stepped back in the bathroom.

“She could be Aang’s daughter then?” Sokka replied walking back to the common area. “Did you get everything for the party?”

“Party aside, Sokka, you have to take responsibility. Kita even inherited Yue’s bright colored hair. What would Katara say?” Aang raised an eyebrow. Sokka and Yue didn’t end on bad terms from Aang's perspective, they just stopped understanding each other. It was a mutual break-up. He didn’t want to throw Katara in this situation to belittle him but she’d be a lot harder on him than they were currently being.

Sokka began pacing back and forth with the seven month old. He knew the possibilities were very high that she was his. He hadn’t seen Yue in almost two years, he wouldn’t have ran if she told him the truth. But, abruptly dropping off a seven month old girl in the middle of the night with documents wavering her rights over wasn’t the best way either. There were even a couple of notes on who he could call, and a ton of ultrasound pictures. He certainly wasn’t a teen, but at twenty-three years old he was a little shaken up. “I’m scared alright, there you have it. Tell me how'd you react? I’m all ears,”

“Sokka, it’s perfectly normal to be scared,” Zuko reassured, patting at Sokka’s shoulders. “We’ll help you figure this out and you need to tell your family,”

“Thanks, I really appreciate that,”

“Oh, I was just thinking of what Katara would say but I do agree if that helps,”

“You should’ve kept that to yourself, Hotman,”

“What did I tell you about calling me that Aang?”

“It’s a good nickname! How come Toph is the only one who gets to do them?”

“I don’t even like when she calls me Sparky,”

“If we’re getting new nicknames can Snoozles be changed?”

“No, that’s not at all what we’re doing!”

“But, you just said you didn’t like your nickname!” Aang and Sokka complained in unison.

“While you three debate over that, give me little Wolfie,” Toph moved the diaper bag to the floor, while relieving her from Sokka’s arms. Kita occupied herself by grabbing at Toph’s face or stuffing her own fingers in her mouth. “You guys can start setting up the decorations,”

“Did you just con us into doing all the major work?” Aang yelled from the kitchen pulling out the hammer and nails for the banner.

“Possibly,” Toph shrugged, holding her hands out for Kita to smack. “Plus Zuko has to start the cooking, and Sokka has to clean this mess up,”

It took about two hours for them to really get everything moving. Toph was focused on keeping little Kita busy, she enjoyed babies for the most part they were hand-ons with everything after a certain age. However, Auntie Toph had drawn the lines at changing dirty diapers. She did enjoy hearing Sokka, Aang and Zuko argue over whose turn it was to change the foul mess.

While the plan was for Katara to be surprised by her closest family and friends she had others plans herself. There was an issue with scheduling for another passenger on the plane so Katara had sneaky swapped tickets. She contacted Suki, who now becoming the middle didn’t want to ruin the surprise on both sides and found ways to stall.

Yet, while picking up Katara and Sokka’s relatives and making a few final rounds to the stores couldn’t beat the surprise of waiting for them at the apartment.

“I’m so excited! It’s been four months since I’ve been with everyone, I hope I didn’t miss anything,” Katara exclaimed. “You know I was really worried about going,”

Hakoda pressed a soft kiss against her forehead. “You needed to branch out on your own,” He felt prideful in both of his children everyday, they were vastly different but carried the same level of ambition to succeed.

“Yagoda contacted me all about your work. I can’t wait to hear it from you, now let’s get inside,” Gran-Gran commented, pulling Katara in for another hug. “But, as proud as I am of you, I missed you two much.”

Suki couldn’t get a chance to knock on the apartment door before Zuko opened it revealing a sleeping Sokka on the couch with Kita resting on his chest. While Aang and Toph both slept next to each other in the corner.

The Southern family and Suki held the same confused gaze. “It’s a lot to explain,” Zuko tried to say. What he really wanted to do was grab hold of Katara after not seeing her for so long, but that could wait.

“Suki?”

“Yes, Katara?”

“Please, pour up those cups of Cactus Juice,”

“Does anyone else want a cup?”

“I’ll take one, I need to be real comfortable for this story,”

Although this can be enjoyed on its own, this is part of our headcanon storyline and we imagine the reader here as Min-seo, our headcanon girlfriend for Jin. You had to shake your head a little to dislodge the copper coloured leaf which found itself in your hair as you left the high-ceiling-ed building and stood atop the stone steps. The social sciences building was the oldest on campus and the current view, from the steps, offered a breathtaking view of the university-owned park which stood at the end of the pedestrianised street. Canopies of scarlet and amber lined the edges of what remained of the grass and flower beds; the slight breeze aiding the leaves which had not yet fallen to join their friends on the ground. You couldn’t help but pause for a moment to appreciate the wide, open space in front of you, almost forgetting how heavy the carrier bag in your hand was and the way it dug into your fingers as you took in the sight. You wondered whether you would have much need to visit this part of the city again now you had graduated. The thought of not walking through the park most days on your way to class made you feel a little sad. 

The thought soon dispersed and was replaced with a warm smile as you noticed a figure make his way through the arched iron gates across the road. Jin was dressed for the crisp autumn weather in a pale turtleneck sweater and a pair of cornflower-coloured jeans; his round spectacles and brown loafers completing the look. He didn’t look an inch out of place among the new influx of students as they weaved in and out of the park gates, darting from building to building in order to make it to class on time and nobody paid him any attention as he crossed the pedestrian crossing and climbed the stone steps. 

“Did you get everything you needed?” He smiled as he reached your side. Your chest grew warm in response at seeing him; it always did, no matter how short your time apart was. You noticed him glance down at the carrier bag which was currently digging long grooves into your fingers; filled with books, folders and ring-bound essays you had freed from your locker earlier in the afternoon. 

“Yeah…” You held it out to show him as you walked down the steps in unison and stopped at the curb to allow a bike to ride past.

“I’ve booked the table for seven o’clock…is that alright?” Jin asked, slipping the carrier from your hand easily as his warm fingers found yours. You nodded, crossing the street. Going out to dinner had been his idea to celebrate your final day on campus. His parents had been disappointed to find you were only able to purchase four tickets for your graduation ceremony the previous week and you had already invited your older sister along with your parents and Jin. You knew that they had also wanted to be there, alongside your boyfriend in the front row, and this was their way of making it up to you. 

“Are your parents already in Seoul?” You asked. They had been due to fly in from a holiday abroad at some point today.

He nodded. “They wanted to be at the restaurant early to decorate the table.” 

You couldn’t help but grin at his indiscretion. “Mine have framed the picture already.” You rolled your eyes slightly as you passed under the iron gate marking the entrance to the park. The photograph of you in your cap and gown had adorned the living room mantle in your parent’s house for the last two days and they wouldn’t stop showing their friends. You knew they were just proud of you, but it was becoming embarrassing. 

“So when are you going to start your Master’s?” Golden leaves crunched under your shoes as you walked side by side. You knew from the tone in his voice he was being playful, but the comment inadvertently filled your chest with dread. You had been hearing similar questions for the past week from almost everyone you ran into: whether you were going to continue your studies or search for a graduate job straight away. While your current part-time retail position was not the best paid or challenging in the world, you liked your colleagues and the hours suited you and, if you were honest with yourself, you didn’t feel quite ready to move on yet. 

You blushed. “I’ve only just graduated. I haven’t even thought about that yet.”

Jin protested dramatically. “But I really liked your ceremony…I was looking forward to another one.” 

This made you grin despite yourself as you remembered seeing him in the audience as you walked up on stage to shake the Vice Chairman’s hand. “Then why were you crying?”

“I just had something in my eye.” He said with a smile. You knew he didn’t mind you knowing; it had been an emotional day for you too. You felt his hand tighten around yours, squeezing it lovingly. “Shall we go this way?” He nodded towards a narrow gravel pathway which curved around a bed of royal blue Chinese bellflowers. 

“Yeah.” You murmured indifferently, following his lead and vaguely noticing the change as the soft crunching sounds under your Converse made way to the champ-champ sound of small stones. 

Jin turned to you. “I liked your gown.”

You shrugged with a smile. “It was just rented.” You didn’t mention that you had worked overtime every day for an entire week to afford it. Your mom and dad had offered to pay but you protested; it was your ceremony and it felt only right that your first action as a graduate should be to pay for it yourself. 

“You looked like you were going to Hogwarts.” Jin chuckled, clearly thinking of the way the black gown had skimmed your ankles and flowed behind you as you walked up the steps and onto the wooden stage. Unlike him, it was your only time on stage in your life, unless you counted your part as Mary in the Nativity during kindergarten. You smiled in reply and, after a few moments of walking, Jin vocalised the fear you had felt since that day last week. “Are you nervous?” He asked softly. 

You hesitated before answering, although you knew what he meant. “There’s not many graduate jobs in Seoul for a Sociology major…”

“You’ll find something.” The easy confidence in his voice was convincing and you couldn’t help but believe that he was right. You slowed down as you noticed the gravel walkway, running between two fenced flower beds, had been cordoned off up ahead with a pink and white ribbon which stretched from one iron post to the other. The tie was at chest height and Jin, letting go of your hand, easily ducked under it before turning to you. He met your nervous glance as he slid his glasses up the bridge of his nose. 

“I don’t think we’re supposed to go in there…” You looked both ways anxiously, checking to see if anyone had noticed.

“It’ll be fine.” He held his hand out under the tie, waiting for you. “Now you’re a graduate, you can do what you want!” His wide, toothy smile made his eyes crinkle sweetly at the corners, making your chest flutter. 

“Not if we get stopped by the park-police.” You smirked, still a little timid as you joined him on the other side of the barrier. Although you couldn’t work out what the ribbon was for, the thought of breaking some kind of public rule was sort of exciting. 

Jin bent down to pick up a stray twig on the gravel. “You could always stupefy them with this!” He brandished it with enthusiasm, bouncing along your side. You couldn’t help but notice how energetic he was for a chilly autumn afternoon. You yourself had been unable to sleep for half the night, the strange prospect of it being your last day in the dormitory you had lived in for three years playing on your mind. 

“I haven’t actually seen Harry Potter…” You murmur. 

“It’s about a boy who’s a wizard.” He pauses. “And an owl.”

“I know.”

He turned to look at you, his expressions and movements a little fidgety and jumpy. You wondered if he was nervous about the dinner and seeing your parents again. He always seemed effortlessly confident and charming around them; the perfect gentleman, but you had to wonder whether deep down he had his own anxieties about them. “I thought you hadn’t seen it?” He asked. 

You shrug easily, teasing. “I don’t live under a rock.” He smiled in reply as you stroked his knuckle softly with the pad of your thumb. You walked another few moments in near-silence; the only sound being the soft crushing sounds of your soles against sand-coloured gravel and the slow, rhythmic exhalations of your breathing. You wondered whether he was busy tomorrow and if he would mind if you asked to stay the night. His apartment was closer to the restaurant and you didn’t really want to spend another night with your parents making you talk to your extended family on the phone to explain what you were going to do with your 2:1 degree. Jin hadn’t mentioned any plans beyond the sit-down meal at the restaurant, but you had seen how hectic his schedule was recently with the new album coming out a couple of months ago. That reminded you…

 “How’s Yoongi?” You asked. While Jin’s band-mate was unarguably a man of few words, he always made the effort to talk to you when you were at events together and his presence often had the ability to make you feel at ease. You had been both shocked and strangely saddened to hear of his breakup and even more surprised to discover that most of his friends had not even known he had been dating. You remembered vividly the way Yoongi had looked at the woman in question during the yacht party almost a year before and the way she cooly met his gaze; their familiarity and ease with one another both intimate and wistful. You had known they were lovers almost from the second you saw them inhabit the same space. 

Jin paused. “Getting there.”

You looked at him, trying to read his expression. “And Jeong-sun?” 

You were curious about the older woman who had been both kind and helpful towards you, the night on the yacht.

“I don’t really know.” You saw the honesty in his face. “I don’t have her number.”

You thought this through for a moment before sighing softly. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before…I thought you all knew.” 

“If I was a better friend, I might have realised sooner.” He sounded sad and you squeezed his hand gently. 

“Well, you’re here for him now.” You said gently. He was silent in return and, you sensed, deep in thought. You changed the subject, noticing for the first time that you hadn’t seen another person besides Jin in over twenty minutes. “I wonder why it’s cordoned off?”

He immediately perked up. “Maybe they found a body.”

You couldn’t help but laugh, despite his macabre suggestion. “It wouldn’t be pink…” You shook your head, thinking. “Maybe it’s someone’s birthday.”

“Maybe…” He murmured, voice wandering off before changing the topic. “Are you going to frame your degree?”

You shrugged. “It might take months to arrive.”

“What about the thing you were holding?”

“The scroll? It was just a prop…they had to hand me something, it would have looked silly otherwise.”

Jin smiled, putting his hand gently on your waist. “This way…” He led you casually down another branch in the path. The gravel made made for soft, spongy grass as you weaved your way down the narrow bend. Violet and mauve sprigs of Sweet Alyssum surrounded you on both sides; scenting the air as you walked. “You’re parents will meet us outside the restaurant.” He explained. 

You felt your chest drop a little. “I hope they get along.” Although you had both met each other’s parents on many occasions, this was the first time the two families would meet each other. 

“How could they not?” He smiled reassuring. “Your mom’s just like you…my parents will love her.”

You sighed. “But you know my dad will show them his weird birthmark!”

“The one that looks like the Republic of China?” He grinned. 

“Only if you squint really hard.” You rolled your eyes. “It’s his favourite party trick.”

Jin’s hand found your shoulder, palming it gently as you turned another bend. “I’m sure they won’t mind.”

You highly doubted it but pushed the thought to the back of your mind as you became more aware of the silence around you. “Are you sure there’s an exit this way?” You looked around at the sea of purple. 

“I’m sure.” He said easily as the path veered off to the right and the flower beds made way for a wide expanse of lawn. You peered up ahead at the little whitewashed bandstand which stood in a clearing at the end of the path. You recognised it at once; it was where the university had hosted their welcome event in your first year, with little tents and stands set up around the wooden structure in the empty patch of grass. You could see more pink and white ribbons, like the ones you had seen blocking off the path, wrapped around the octagonal banister. A white streamer hung from the beamed roof, but you were unable to see what it said from this angle. 

“Oh look, someone’s brought banners.” You exclaimed, sensing you had been right about the birthday. 

“Let’s see…” Jin smiled, letting go of your hand as you rushed ahead to circle the platform. He watched as you found the open side and walked the few steps which led to the eight-sided stretch of decking to read the cream-coloured banner. You stopped as you read the neat script, mouth tugging upwards in an open mouthed smile. 

WILL YOU MARRY ME? 

How sweet, you thought, wondering if the lucky girl had already passed the sign or not and if the groom-to-be was also a student. The park was university-owned after all. You turned around to show Jin; he had been a little way behind you when you rushed over to the bandstand, but stopped in your tracks as his eyes met yours. He was bending down at the bottom of the steps, resting on one knee. 

“Did you fall?” You asked as you stepped towards him. Your lips were parted as you reached the edge of the platform and stopped. Your cheeks suddenly felt hot and your stomach somersaulted as you looked down at him. You were beginning to understand, but a part of you didn’t quite believe it…didn’t register that this was all for you. 

“So will you?” He asked. His brown eyes were wide and expectant. You opened your mouth to speak but found no words came out. You found yourself thinking of the first time you met, almost two years before when he had entered the department store you worked at, looking to buy a formal suit for an award ceremony. The memory was comforting as well as amusing; recently the group had entire flocks of designers to dress them for shows in suits which cost more than your entire yearly paycheck but on that day he had gotten down on one knee in front of you as you reached the tape measure around his neck. No matter how many times you did this, it always made you nervous and you felt your hands shake a little as you pulled the cord tighter, trying to read the measurement. He lightened the tension by making a joke. “What?” You had asked, with a grin, not quite hearing him over the thudding in your ears. He repeated: “I said, I’m sorry…I left the ring in my other jacket.” You felt your heart skip a beat in your chest. You hadn’t thought about that first meeting in a long time; there were so many memories with Jin since, but now, you remembered as though it were yesterday. 

You realised you had been stunned into silent for almost half a minute, starring at your boyfriend, unable to speak. You found yourself worrying that he would take this the wrong way; that you were rejecting his proposal, and grew increasingly frustrated with your own, stunned body. His expression remained soft as his eyes met yours. 

 “I’ll take really good care of you.” He added; eyes wider than ever. There was a second of understanding; of processing the earnest meaning of his words, before you felt the air being sucked out of your lungs as your chest and stomach lurched. The sensation was simultaneously both the most painful and wonderful thing you had ever experienced and you were aware that you had started to sob before you even felt the hot, salty flood of tears stain your cheeks. Your eyes closed shut against the sting as you clasped your hand to your mouth, desperately wanting to shout yes, yes, yes as loud as you could over and over again, but only able to cry audibly. 

You felt Jin’s arms around you, cradling your shoulders and torso against his wide shoulders, holding you to him. One hand cupped your damp cheek as you blindly pressed the other against the soft, warm wool of his sweater and you nodded against his palm, your entire body trembling as you accepted his offer; having never been so sure of anything in your entire life than you were now. His mouth was against you a moment later, kissing your lips, nose, cheeks… You kissed him back frantically, your lips trailing over his skin restlessly as you continued to sob. All around, the park was silent, giving you your privacy as you clung ever closer to each other.

Top 5 Favorite Female MHA characters

Number 5

Nejire Hadou

She is definitely one of my favorite female characters, all though she is quite new to me, i always adored her quirk. I loved her appearance in the manga and I’m looking forward to seeing her kick ass in the new season! I really like her design, especially her eyes. Her quirk is really cool and would definitely be in my top 5 if i could choose my own quirk. I have a small headcannon which is probably cannon actually but it’s not confirmed yet, I think that due to Nejire’s outgoing and bubbly personality as well as her good looks and strong quirk made her very popular among the boys and heroes alike! She was during her first and second year ahead of mirio and tamaki but they soon caught up with her making them the big three. I really hope to see more of her but let’s move on to

Number 4

Ibara Shiozaki

What can i say except i love her, when i was still an anime only i liked seeing her already, I thought she was pretty and her quirk looked really strong and useful! She appeared to be kind and gentle, unlike monoma she wasn’t vengeful towards 1A and had a true ideology a hero should have. No wonder kaminari would like to ask her out! But when she absolutely destroyed kaminari in their battle i knew that i found love.

I would say, but that’s not completely true. I liked her character but I appreciated her when i met @thatawkwardotaku. Now bare with me here, we did a roleplay. I like doing those because I practice my english and i get more in character with the characters i play, and i also get ideas for stories! I tried out ibara for the first time when i met her. I had a really fun time doing the roleplay and mailla even said i was good at Roleplaying her. So that day i was just “IM SOLD” and loved her, she did go down a few ranks but i hold her close in my heart

Number 3

Itsuka Kendo

Okay so, before you continue reading. Look at her, look at her eyes. Look at her ponytail. Are you finished looking at her? Good, so why has everyone been sleeping on kendo instead of sleeping on their bed? Look at the grace, the strength, the beauty, the tomboy. It is Itsuka Kendo! I really like her personality, I would say that her personality matches with mine a bit because well, all my friends are complete idiots and i am quick to take on a motherly role when I’m near them. I love those idiots. Kendo is the big sis of 1B and arguably has more idiots to deal with and i love her. She’s a friend everyone deserves to have

Back to her design! I love the tomboy aesthetic, she’s energetic and not a pretty girl. She’s beauty but also a tough tomboy, she actually has my favorite hero costume. I love the qipao and when I designed my own character i gave her a qipao as well. I’ll soon show her and the art people drew for my oc!

Number 2

Melissa Shield

This was a really close call, Itsuka kendo or Melissa Shield. I know that she was only in the movie and I’d be lucky if we would ever get to hear her name again but shut up i can dream. Melissa is a foreigner in the world of mha, usually when i talk to my friends I’m the foreigner, i also look quite a lot like her (i wish i was as pretty as her) but personality wise I really like her. Ever since i started watching mha i loved thinking about making characters their strongest possible self. Whether this be through support items or through gaining an extra quirk or quirk evolution. This is how i started getting into support items. I studied a lot of support items and I absolutely loved seeing the costume upgrades and i could only imagine what i would do! I like her kind and caring nature, all though a bit oblivious and maybe a bit overly kind i can relate to her nerdy and geeky side. But overall she’s another reason to show that anyone can be a hero

Headcannon time

bigger headcannon, during the My Hero Academia two heroes movie we never got to see Melissa’s mother. She only made one appearance on the pictures Melissa has in her work shop, when Melissa was born and on her wedding with dave. Not on anything else. We didn’t see her on the Halloween one with her father. It was constantly either all might or dave, so I think that after Melissa was born she died, usually mother’s stay to raise their child. And i think it’s safe to assume that dave is quite rich I don’t think she’d be working abroad. And i would expect to see at least one picture of her for her daughter to remember her by. Imagine her living a life with deku’s father, the i hate being there for the majority of my kids life so that the parental figure can be replaced by all might club. But countering my own theory, she wasn’t mentioned or used as a motivation. Melissa might have said something like “Dad what would mom think if she saw you now!” Aside from that Melissa appeared to be a happy and lucky child but maybe she was too young to grasp the concept of death.

Kyoka Jirou

Fun fact, i love music. I love singing and trying out new instruments. So I really liked jirous character. Cool and music loving, funny and sarcastic and a bit of a prankster. Even though she was never a main main character she did play some crucial roles in character development of characters. Like saving kaminari during the USJ attack, helping Koda with his fear of bugs. She was one of the main reasons eri smiled again and she truly helped momo out of her shell! There more to her then just her cold persona and small chest.

Mei Hatsume

Back to my love for support, I really like this insane, crazy scientist. She’s amazing just amazing. I also relate to her crazy and weird side because i am a little weird. When I’m around my friends i can drop some weird ass shit in the conversation randomly, but if i do that you can expect that I really took a liking into you!

I love this noodle hair and you can expect seeing her in the future again becoming one of midoriya&co most important allies.

Number 1

Momo Yaoyorozu

Holy moly, an actual 1A character that’s important to the story and not some side character from 1B? Yes i know this may sound impossible but yes. I can actually like main characters that are important to the story!

Momo, my angel i came a long way with you. Ever since i started watching MHA i liked her character, she was so kind and caring on the inside. She appeared so cold and like many other cold rich know it all characters. Yet she wasn’t, she was a true friend that loves helping out others. A hero when she wasn’t in her costume and a hero in her costume.

She’s constantly worrying about others, as well as helping them succeed. With her on your team you almost have an assured win. Her intelligence and versatile quirk will always get you out of a tight spot. I really, really hope her character gets the justice it deserves

Chapter 11: Trust

Kyuhyun’s POV

She called me when I was in my hotel room in New York. It would never occur to me that she would call for anything short of an emergency, so I asked, “Is everything okay?”

There was but a mere trace of fatigue in her voice as she replied, “Yeah!” Her excitement seemed to wake her up. “I just wanted to call to thank you for the gifts.”

“Oh—” I smiled and leaned back in the hotel’s slightly too short computer chair. “Happy belated birthday. Has Heechul taken you shopping yet?”

“Yeah.” I could almost see her nodding so forcefully that her bangs became disheveled. “He used the money you gave him to buy this really pretty blue dress. Since you’re not here, he talked me into letting Dad organize a small get-together. I think he just called it a get-together because I don’t like parties. But I think Heechul was just trying to meet a girl he can take to our engagement party—”

I couldn’t remember a time when a girl wasn’t chasing after Heechul, so I couldn’t help but ask, “He doesn’t have a girlfriend?

“I’m sure he does,” she answered, “just not one he wants to bring home to Dad. Anyway, I wore the blue dress to my birthday get-together. Dad seemed so happy when I told him to go ahead with the arrangements.”

“Of course he was.” I told her, “Your father embraces every opportunity to celebrate you.”

She paused briefly. Her voice lowered as she confided, “I thought he would hate me when I told him I didn’t want to be a lawyer.”

“Forgive me for prying,” I began delicately, lightly spinning in the chair, “but how did he react when Heechul dropped out?”

I didn’t expect her to tell me, but she immediately said, “Well, he wasn’t happy. Heechul didn’t decide to leave— he was failing his classes, so Dad agreed that he shouldn’t become a lawyer.”

My eyebrows twitched at her explanation. “Really? He was a bit older than me, but everyone talked about how gifted he was. Even by the time I started studying law, the faculty talked about how shocking his withdrawal had been.”

Moments passed in silence. I assumed she was reconsidering her brother. 

“He was always passionate about music,” she said, “but I don’t think he wanted to disappoint Dad. Maybe— maybe he thought it would be better if Dad thought he was incapable, not unwilling to continue the family calling.”

I couldn’t relate to Heechul or Ae-Young in that respect. There was never a moment I considered being anything other than a lawyer. So, rather than speaking out of ignorance, I hummed, “Maybe.”

“Dad knew Heechul wouldn’t become a lawyer. We’ve always expected Heechul to do whatever he wants. But I—” she laughed, but I don’t think she thought anything was funny. “You know, he spent so much money to send me on study abroad programs so my applications to law schools would stand out. And I started studying photography as soon as I left his house— as soon as I didn’t have to stomach his disappointed gaze. I betrayed him.”

I sank under the weight of her misunderstanding. Did she not know? “Ae-Young, your father is so proud of you— and it really has nothing to do with your career. He always talks to clients, co-workers— even total strangers— about how his daughter is the best person he has ever known.”

I could feel it. She was smiling, and I wished I was there to see it. 

“Really?”

“Really,” I swore. Drawing a deep breath, I said, “Thank you for trusting me with your thoughts— even the tangled ones.”

She yawned, “Thank you for helping me untangle them.”

I glanced at the clock, but I couldn’t remember how many hours were between us. “What time is it back home?”

She wouldn’t tell me; instead, she replied, “I don’t have plans tomorrow, so I’d like to talk as long as you can, please.”

“Okay,” I said once I caught my breath. “I’m here.”

“I want you to trust me with your thoughts, too,” she said. “I may not organize them how you organize mine— maybe you don’t need me to listen, but I want to.”

Can I really burden someone so young and vibrant with my worries? It sounded like the wrong thing to do, but denying her would be the worst thing to do. 

Feeling that I had somehow disappointed her, I apologized. “I’m sorry. I do trust you. I’m just not used to being so interesting to someone. Not that I’m saying you’re too interested in me, I just—” I bit my tongue to stop the rambling. 

I’ve never rambled before. What’s wrong with me? Deep down— actually, right at the surface— I knew what was wrong, but I wouldn’t admit it. 

Slowly, as if trying to avoid a wound, she asked, “Nobody has ever asked what you’re thinking before? Not even. . . your past girlfriend?”

The turn in the conversation took my breath away not because I was still hurt, but because I was not ready for Ae-Young to see me vulnerable. 

But she won’t see me. I just have to tell her what happened. That will give her the honesty she craves, and maybe. . . Maybe I can bury these memories forever.

“I had one girlfriend before, and we dated for ten years.” It sounded so foreign— it sounded like such a long time when I said it. “Do you remember her?”

“Yes. You brought her to some of Dad’s work parties.”

What didn’t she remember? “Yeah, back then, I was just his best friend’s son. I didn’t work for him, so I didn’t think there was anything wrong with bringing my girlfriend around. Anyway, I met her when I— I think I must have been 17, or maybe I was 16. I thought I loved her until quite recently when thinking about you—”

She gasped, and I flushed. “I just mean, I’ve spent more time with you in these months than I did with her in ten years. How could I love her if I never knew her?”

Softly, she asked, “So, did you drift apart?”

“No— well, not exactly.” A frown etched into my face as I recalled, “She called my office once in our entire relationship. I had been working there for almost a year, and she just called to ask me to drop my case against a man accused of— well, I don’t want you hearing about things like that, so it’s best if I don’t tell you.”

“She asked you to— what? Why?”

“I didn’t ask. I told her no, I wouldn’t drop charges against anybody.” I stared up at the ceiling and closed my eyes to dream of the best way to phrase what happened. There was no good way to say it. “I think I realized how close we were to an edge, and I didn’t want to take that final step into nothingness. It was ending, and I knew it, and I didn’t want it to be because of something I asked.”

“You don’t have to tell me if it hurts—”

“No,” I said, and if she had been there, she might have been surprised by how I could now roll my eyes— not wince— as I admitted, “I’m okay now. I didn’t have to ask. She told me that she had been having an affair with him for years, that she was in love with him, and that they were expecting a child.”

She fell silent and didn’t speak until I asked if she was still there. “I’m here. It’s just— I don’t think I’ve ever been so angry at anybody in my whole life. And to think— I saw her with another man at a party ance, and I didn’t tell you because Dad said— I’m so sorry—”

“Are you crying?” My heart dropped, and I couldn’t catch it. “Don’t cry! I— I heard that she was doing that for years, and I just couldn’t believe it until she told me herself. You can’t blame yourself when you didn’t do anything wrong. You shouldn’t cry for me.”

“I can’t help it! You deserved better— you know that, don’t you? You deserve—”

If I ever wanted to breathe again, I had to get her to stop crying. “I’m happy, Ae-Young, so don’t mourn a relationship that wasn’t meant to be.”

At once I realized that she and I wouldn’t be speaking like this if my heart hadn’t been shattered that day. I wouldn’t be her fiancé if she hadn’t been brave enough to abandon her father’s dream that she would become a lawyer. I’m grateful for our pains. I’m grateful for her. 

I couldn’t risk saying anything that would make her cry more, though, not while I was too far away to console her.

“Okay,” she said. “I’m not crying anymore because I’m happy to talk to you.”

I can breathe again. A smile replaced my frown. “So, which was your favorite gift?”

She yawned again. “They were all good, but I liked the CD best.” I think she was falling asleep when she slurred, “ Heechul said that you like cliche music, but I told him that he was stupid. I mean, he’s always stupid, but those songs were so beautiful— they made me cry.”

My eyes widened. “You cried?” 

What’s wrong with me? Do I only ever upset her?

“In a romantic way,” she answered as if deliberately trying to give me a heart attack. “They were just so lovely, and when I experience something beautiful, I can’t help but cry. Heechul says I express every emotion through tears.”

“Ah,” I realized, “so you were happy?”

“Yeah.”

Then I was happy too. “That’s okay then. Did you have a favorite song?”

“I liked them all,” she promised. “And since you really love music, I think you should choose the song we dance to at the wedding.”

She was almost too considerate. I was shaking my head as I asked, “Shouldn’t you have some input?”

Sleepily, she instructed, “Just pick the one that reminds you of me.”

The trouble is, they all remind me of you. I wanted to tell her, but she drifted off, and I had to let her go.

Grey Stains, chapter 2

Hey everyone, here's chapter 2 of Grey Stains. Our first glimpse of Hogwarts, and backstory for Astrid! I hope you enjoy it! I will also update my masterpost with this story, so if you want to find chapter 1, look there or check my ‘grey stains’ tag.

One thing I would like to address here are the side characters. Pretty much all side characters like professors and classmates, are lifted from other franchises that I enjoy. However, you shouldn't feel obligated to know all (or any) of them to understand my story. They're simply there to add some color to the scenes, and because I think having Hiro and Rayla is more interesting and easy to remember for you, the reader, than Ravenclaw OC #1 and Gryffindor OC #2. So if you don't know a character in the story, I hope the context explains enough about them. If you do know the character, I hope you enjoy some of the in-jokes I put in. After this chapter their presence should be less overwhelming, as the story will focus more on Hiccup and Astrid proper.

"And we're here, with fifteen minutes to spare! Those Muggle 'taxis' are faster than I thought!" Astrid's uncle Finn said as he led the way into King's Cross Station. It was filled with people, and the loud announcements and screeching of the trains made Astrid's head hurt. Her owl, a yellow-blue bird with the powers of a Blast-ended Skrew who she named Stormfly, screeched loudly, and she hoped none of the Muggles would notice the puff of smoke coming out of Stormfly's beak.

"I keep telling you, the Muggles are smarter than you assume, but you never believe me!" Aunt Erika said. They kept bickering about transportation as they walked onto platform 9. Astrid recognized a man standing there, despite him wearing Muggle clothes. It was Mr. Cruz, one of the aurors working with her uncle. He was subtly guiding wizard families towards the column dividing platforms 9 and 10.

Finn and Erika stopped their argument to greet him, and a minute later they got the signal to go. Astrid looked at the solid brick wall in front of her, and she suddenly felt scared. No, no, she can't be scared. She's gonna be a proud Gryffindor, she has to be brave! So she gritted her teeth and ran right after her guardians.

Although she may have closed her eyes before reaching the wall. There was a brief sensation of her moving through what felt like liquid, but then the sounds warped and changed. The Muggle talk and modern trains vanished, replaced by the sounds of magic and the hissing of a steam engine.

"Alright girl, are you ready? Oh, you grew up so quickly! Don't be afraid to send us letters, okay? It's normal to feel a bit lonely at first! But I'm sure you'll make lots of friends!" Erika said, rubbing her cheek.

"Thanks, Aunt Erika. I'll try," she said as Finn took her suitcase and lifted it onto the train. Astrid wanted to protest, say that she could do it herself. But before she could open her mouth he turned to her with that look that meant he was going to say something important. He kneeled, putting himself a little below her eye level, but she still felt small.

"Astrid… I'm sorry your parents couldn't be here to see you off. Or your sister. But I know that your mom and dad and Celia would be so, so proud of you. And so is your brother Max, even if he couldn't make it to London because of his work. And we are so proud of you too. You know, after the Battle… there was so much destruction. So much death, and it felt so hopeless. But we took you in, and in you we saw hope. That war ended because people like your parents and your siblings stood up and fought against evil. They fought to give you a better world to grow up in. And I know you'll work to fight the evils of your time. It's different now, you know. Less open. Don't forget that some people still have those… evil beliefs, even if they won't say it out loud. But I know you'll do the right thing. You're strong," he said, putting his hands on her shoulders.

Astrid tried to look him in the eye, but she felt tears appear, and she dropped her head trying to hide it. She wasn't so sure if Max was proud of her. They had barely spoken in years. He was abroad, studying Healing in Italy, and rarely replied to letters. She rarely felt like sending him letters either. They had never been super close, Astrid had liked her sister Celia more back when she was alive, and six months after the Battle of Hogwarts Max had left Britain, finishing his NEWTs at Beauxbatons and traveling Europe ever since.

As she looked around, seeing parents hugging their children, siblings teasing each other, laughing together, she wanted to shout that it wasn't fair. Her family had been torn apart by Death Eaters, and these people were all perfectly fine?

But no, she couldn't do that. Like Uncle Finn always said, she should be grateful she has what she has. Entire families had been slaughtered, Muggleborns tortured until they were left permanently insane at St. Mungo's, babies killed and turned into Inferi and other monsters. Her pain was nothing compared to that.

So she forced herself to smile and nod.

"I'll fight for the light, Uncle Finn. Like you taught me! I'll be a brave Gryffindor like you and Dad and Celia! Not to mention Harry Potter and Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger!"

"Alright, little lion, just remember it's okay if you end up in another house. Of course, I know you want to end up in Gryffindor like your heroes. Just remember the other houses did great things too. Hell, your brother was a Slytherin and he fought alongside Neville Longbottom for the entire battle!" Aunt Erika said, and Astrid rolled her eyes.

"I know, Auntie! Doesn't mean they're not dorks," she said. Behind her aunt and uncle she could see the boy from the wand shop walk past, with his messy brown hair and expensive robes. A bald man with two prosthetic limbs walked alongside him. His father? They didn't look related. Something about the boy made her nervous. When she saw him at Ollivander's, waving wand after wand with no effect, she had thought he might be a squib. But if he was going to Hogwarts he should be magical, right?

After some goodbyes and awkward hugs Astrid boarded the train. She walked through the corridor, checking for any empty cabins but not finding any. Eventually she found one with three girls of her age, and decided she might as well get started on making friends.

"Hello!" she said, trying to seem confident as she opened the door and pulled her suitcase inside. The white-haired girl turned to her, revealing strange purple markings under her eyes.

"Hi, I'm Rayla, and these are Merida and Pidge. Merida and I already knew each other, we grew up in the same town," the girl said in a thick Scottish accent, gesturing to two girls who both had their own style of wild hair. Merida had a wild mane of curly bright red hair, while Pidge had short dirty blonde hair that stuck out in all directions and looked like she cut it herself.

"I'm Astrid," she said, sitting down next to Pidge.

They easily got to talking, and Astrid learned that Rayla's family situation was similar to hers: Her parents had gone missing during the war, and she was raised by a family friend called Runaan. Pidge was Muggleborn, but her brother Matt was magical too, and was currently a Ravenclaw prefect. Merida was from a very old wizarding house, and her father lost a leg fighting evil creatures in the war.

"So what do you think you'll be when you grow up? My parents keep trying to push me into politics, that I'll have to keep managing our ancient house, but I say sod that!" Merida said, her accent even thicker than Rayla's.

"Probably inventing. I'm good at figuring out tech and stuff. I'm curious if I can use magic in Muggle computers," Pidge said. Astrid wasn't sure what she was talking about. Before she could ask, Rayla spoke up.

"This is probably weird, but Runaan is part of an elite group of aurors, and he kind of expects me to join him. Not sure if I want to, though," she said, rolling her eyes.

"My uncle is an auror too. That's what I always expected to be. Never really considered anything else. I want to fight evil like my family did," Astrid said, trying not to think about how often Uncle Finn had come home with dead eyes after another raid. Those were evenings he wouldn't say a word. He'd just grab a bottle of firewhiskey and slowly empty it while listening to old songs on the radio.

"I'll stick to making weapons for you, I guess. Way safer than being on the frontlines," Pidge chuckled, adjusting her round glasses. Astrid wondered if she knew they looked just like Harry Potter's glasses.

"Come on, Gobber! Aren't I supposed to make friends? Meet people? Doesn't Dad always say networking is important?" Hiccup exclaimed, gesturing at the locked door of their cabin.

"Your father gave me strict instructions not to let you out of my sight until you're safe at Hogwarts. He may not be my direct boss, but you know I can't ignore an order from him! He's got influence! That curse on the Defense Against the Dark Arts teaching position is finally gone, and I'll be damned if I lose the job anyway because you can't stay put for a few hours!" Gobber shouted, pointing at Hiccup with his prosthetic hand.

"What does he think is gonna happen? Death Eaters kidnapping me? People angry about his policies attacking me? What even for? My dad is the most apolitical politician ever, he doesn't care about any ideology. All he cares about is slaying dragons," Hiccup said, looking out the window at London disappearing behind them.

"Oh, don't play dumb. You know what this is about. Stoick is worried that the Red Death will attack the train. I figured that you of all people should understand that," Gobber said, digging in his bag with his good hand.

"You know I don't live my life cowering in fear of dragons every moment, right? My dad may be obsessed, but I'm not. It's ridiculous. Like that Red Death would actually attack us," Hiccup said, looking up at the cloudy sky. Could dragons be hiding up there?

"Hey, I agree that Stoick is paranoid about dragons, but he's not wrong about the Red Death. It has killed fourteen muggles and three mages in the past year. Despite nearly all the Department of Magical Creatures' resources being devoted to hunting it, it has eluded your father for years," Gobber said as he pulled a chess set from his bag. Hiccup looked away from the window just in time to see the man take his wand out and placing it on the bench beside him.

"I just… He's always locked me up at home in fear of it, and I figured that now that I get to go to Hogwarts I'd finally be… free. But he's still locking me up," Hiccup muttered, glancing at his own wand. According to the eighth wandmaker they had visited this summer, in Beijing, it was the best wand money could buy. Hiccup had tried thousands of wands in shops all over the world, and none had chosen him, so Stoick had bought him this. Maybe at Hogwarts he'd learn how to use it.

"Oh, don't think like that. It's just until we reach the castle. You'll be safe there, and I won't have to babysit you anymore," Gobber chuckled, and Hiccup tried to smile. "Now, since we're stuck together we might as well pass the time with some chess!" the man said, laying the board on the table as the pieces jumped out of the box, taking their positions with loud boasts and battlecries.

They played for a while. Gobber won the first game, and they took a break when a nice lady knocked on the door to ask if they wanted any candy. Gobber bought a large brick of chocolate for them both. The sugar seemed to make Hiccup more alert, and he easily won the next three games.

"Looks like you'll be a Ravenclaw with those brains. What house would you like to be in?" Gobber asked as his broken black pieces put themselves back together with loud groans and whimpers. Hiccup shrugged.

"Haven't really thought about it. I guess everyone always says Gryffindor, but I'm not so sure. Maybe Slytherin, to piss off Dad," he said as his king and queen led his white pieces back onto the field.

"Honestly I think he'd be more disappointed if you ended up a Hufflepuff. He often complains they're 'too nice' and 'care too much about dangerous creatures'," Gobber said. "But with the way you're slaughtering me, I don't think you're nice enough for that."

As he climbed out of the rickety boat Hiccup didn't feel like Hogwarts was a very magical place. It was raining, and the summer warmth was blown away by a cold wind.

"Why did we have to go all the way to London for the train if Hogwarts is right next door? And now a boat! I hate water!" a Scottish voice from the next boat said, and Hiccup looked over to see a white-haired girl looking sick as she jumped onto land. Her robes were simple and sturdy compared to his gilded silk robes that did nothing to keep him warm.

"Such weird boats. Ours back home are much sturdier!" a girl with long brown hair said as she climbed out beside Hiccup. "I'm Katara, by the way. Katara Waters."

"I'm Hiccup," he said loudly to be heard over the howling wind. They hadn't had much of a chance to speak during the boat ride.

"Alright, head inside now, let's hurry!" Gobber shouted, helping a black-haired girl out of one of the boats. She looked very annoyed, and when Hiccup looked closer he noticed her eyes were blank and milky. For a second the dragon's eyes from that day in Gringotts flashed in his mind. Katara waved her wand and did a strange movement with her other hand, and the rain above them was diverted, like she was holding a large umbrella. Hiccup gladly took the opportunity to look away from the blind girl and focus on something else.

"You can do that already?" he asked, fingers rolling over his own wand on his belt.

"It's magic from my tribe, I learned it from my gran-gran," she said, continuing the odd spell.

"I thought Hagrid was supposed to guide the first-years?" one of the boys asked as the last of the boats docked, water splashing over the side as its occupants jumped out.

"Hagrid retired years ago, he moved to France. I'm the groundskeeper now," Gobber said, before casting a charm that lit up a muddy path. The group hobbled along for a few minutes until they reached the front gates of the castle. Gobber waved his wand, and the gate opened. They gladly ran inside, slipping and sliding on the tiles. They barely had time to appreciate the enormous hall with its marble stairs before a familiar voice spoke up.

"Ah, you're here. Welcome, first-years, to Hogwarts!" a tall woman with grey hair said. Hiccup recognized her from one of his dad's ministry parties.

"I am Professor McGonagall, Headmistress of Hogwarts and Transfiguration teacher," she continued as the kids gathered around the enormous marble stairs she was standing on. Once they were all lined up she talked a bit about how houses worked, and that they should obey the rules. Hiccup's mind wandered, and with it his eyes. Next to him was Hiro, the boy from the wand shop, who looked as bored as him. Next to Hiro was a bald boy with arrow-shaped tattoos on his head and arms. Despite his strange appearance he looked giddy and excited. And at the far end he saw Astrid. She suddenly noticed him staring and frowned, and he quickly dropped his gaze.

"Now, let us enter the Great Hall so you can be Sorted!" McGonagall finished her speech, before passing through the line of first-years to a large door to their right.

Although he had heard stories and read books about this hall, he still gasped at the sight of it. The ceiling reflected the storm clouds outside, though no rain fell on the floating candles and tables filled with precious silverware. Hundreds of students dressed in similar black robes sat along the 4 tables, and they all looked at him and the other first-years entering. At the far end was the staff table on the raised platform. He could see Gobber near the center of it, giving him a quick wave with his prosthetic hand. He tried to smile back, though it was hard when his stomach churned at the sight of the tattered old hat sitting on a tiny old chair.

The blind girl was the only one not gasping at the amazing room. Instead she just kept walking forward alongside McGonagall, leading the other first-years towards the Sorting Hat.

Eventually they were all crowded near the chair with the hat, and it began to sing. Some of the Muggleborns gasped and looked fearful at first, but the hat quickly reassured them as it explained its purpose and the characteristics of the four houses.

"Alright, when I call your name, step forward, sit on the chair, and I'll put the hat on you. It will then sort you into your House. Firstly… Avatar, Aang!" McGonagall said, lifting the hat with one hand, a scroll in her other. The bald boy with tattoos he noticed earlier stepped forward with light steps and sat down, and McGonagall lowered the hat over the large blue arrow on his forehead.

"HUFFLEPUFF!" it shouted barely a second later. The boy jumped up, higher than Hiccup knew someone could jump, and ran over to the table that had exploded with applause.

"Beifong, Toph!" The blind girl stepped forward, somehow noticing the small step between them and the chair, and sitting down without help. Hiccup wondered how she did that.

The hat was quiet for a minute as Toph grimaced, before eventually announcing "GRYFFINDOR!"

Butterfly, Star!"

"That's me, that's me! Hi, Mr. Hat! Ooh, ooh, are you going to look into my mind? That's soooo cool!" a girl with heart-shaped cheek marks and blonde hair past her knees screamed as she ran forward, knocking over several first-years with surprising strength. She had an enormous grin as the Hat was placed over her head, hiding her wide eyes from the room.

For a second the grin lowered, before returning full-force. She nodded wildly, making McGonagall reach out her hand to steady the hat.

"GRYFFINDOR!" it suddenly boomed. The table next to them applauded loudly as the girl took off the hat and ran to her new house.

The sorting went on like that for a while, and Hiccup had trouble keeping track of all the names. There was a small commotion at the Ravenclaw table when Pidge Gunderson was called forward and sorted there, but it was quickly shushed.

Hiccup didn't recognize any of the kids that were sorted until "Hamada, Hiro" was sorted into Ravenclaw. Hiccup frowned at that. Wasn't he supposed to be before Hamada, since he's a Haddock? He was about to raise his hand when "Hofferson, Astrid" was announced, and at the sight of the fierce blonde walking forward with resolute steps he forgot what he was thinking about.

The hat was quiet for a very long time, at least five minutes, during which Astrid balled her hands into tighter and tighter fists. Even with her eyes hidden by the hat's brim she was clearly angry.

'GRYFFINDOR!" the hat eventually shouted, and she didn't even wait for McGonagall to lift the hat. Astrid jumped to her feet and tossed it to the chair, before stomping to the applauding table.

Hiccup's musings on what Astrid could be angry about were interrupted by McGonagall scraping her throat and announcing the next name.

"Horrendous, Hiccup!"

The tension that had filled the room at Astrid's anger snapped in the form of collective laughter.

"That's his actual name?"

"Don't know what's worse, the first or last name!"

"Wow, I feel sorry for the house that gets that one!"

"What were his parents thinking?"

Hiccup could feel his cheeks heat up in shame as he slowly stepped forward.

"That's not my last name! It's Haddock! Horrendous is my middle name!" he shouted, trying to be heard over the laughter which only increased at his words.

McGonagall narrowed her eyes as she checked her scroll again.

"You are- SILENCE!" The one word instantly stopped all the laughter in the hall. "You are listed as Horrendous in our records-" Snickers and soft laughs again echoed through the room, though they quickly stopped when she glared.

"We'll figure this out later. Either way, Mr. Hiccup, step forward and be Sorted."

He slowly nodded, feeling the stare of every person in the room on him, and sat down on the chair. Then the hat slid over his eyes, and it was suddenly completely silent.

...Until a raspy voice whispered in his ear.

"Who do we have here? Mistaken identity? Someone messing with the records? Well, let me tell you, you do belong here at Hogwarts, even if your wand doesn't work and someone got confused about your name. But where to put you?"

Hiccup jerked away from the voice and opened his mouth to ask how the hat knew all of this, but before he could even draw a breath the voice whispered in his other ear.

"Don't bother talking out loud, this is all in your head. No need for anyone else to hear this. Now, where oh where shall you go? A kind heart, loyal and forgiving. Not too lazy either. You'd make a decent Hufflepuff. But on the other hand, what a brain! Eager to learn, and I can see a spark of genius in you. You could have new perspectives. Maybe Ravenclaw?"

Hiccup's thoughts raced as he awaited the hat's verdict. A sweatdrop slid over his forehead. The presence gave him a headache.

"You're obviously not a Slytherin, you don't have a deceitful or ambitious bone in your body. Brave though, even if you don't know it yet. A good sense of right and wrong, and deep inside there's fighting spirit. What glorious cause would bring that out? You could be a great hero, you know, and Gryffindor would lead you to glory. All the kids these days want to be in the house of the amazing Harry Potter and his friends, but you could truly follow their path," it said, and Hiccup squeezed his eyes shut.

He was about to agree. Gryffindor was the house of the heroes, the good guys, the house that would please his father, the house the girl who made him feel all funny and light went to.

But then he remembered three Gryffindors on the back of a dragon. Three Gryffindors who everyone called heroes. Gryffindors who let a dragon run amok and kill his mother.

If that was heroism, Hiccup didn't think he wanted it.

"Oh, what's this? Now this is interesting. You might be the first kid I've seen in 7 years who doesn't worship those three. The complete opposite of that previous… never mind that, I'm not supposed to talk about other Sortings. Anyway, this is an interesting form of bravery in itself! But in your case, I think you'd better go to… RAVENCLAW!"

The hat was pulled from Hiccup's head, and the sounds of the Great Hall returned. There was muted clapping from the Ravenclaw table, not nearly as much as for the other students, while the other tables looked relieved. He awkwardly walked to the Ravenclaws, stumbling on the small step, though he managed to avoid falling on his face. He quickly sat down next to Hiro as McGonagall called forth "Jorgenson, Scott" and attention diverted away from him. A girl with round glasses and short hair reached out her hand across the table to him.

"Hey there. I'm Pidge Gunderson. Well, my brother here would say I'm Katie Holt, but that's not what the official records say now, do they Matt?" she said, pointing to a boy several years older, with similar hair and glasses who was sitting next to her. Hiccup awkwardly took her hand and shook it.

"How did you even hack the records here to change your name?! They're all in parchment! It's not like they have computers or internet!" Matt shouted, though he silenced himself when the hat proclaimed "SLYTHERIN" and "Katolis, Callum" was called forward.

"Oh, I have my ways. Still, you owe me 50 quid," Pidge (or was it Katie?) said, snickering. Hiccup wasn't sure how to respond to the bickering siblings.

"Fine, but I still don't understand why you did it. This will come back to bite you eventually," Matt said, rolling his eyes and digging in his pockets, pulling out a few bills of muggle money.

"Let me guess how you did it… You intercepted the communications between the ministry and Hogwarts, probably via Floo," Hiro said, and Pidge chuckled before nodding.

"Yup. Just had to figure out a charm to modify the ink inside the envelope."

"Oh man, I can see you two are already becoming partners in crime. What did I tell you, Tadashi? Hopeless. Our siblings are supervillains in the making!" Matt called out to a tall boy several seats down. He started to reply when the hat shouted "RAVENCLAW" and a boy with messy brown hair and a thick book on a belt slung around his shoulder walked over to sit next to Pidge.

"Hi, I'm Callum. Muggleborn, but my dad is high in muggle government so he already knew about magic," the boy introduced himself. Pidge quickly introduced herself, explaining that she and Matt were Muggleborn as well.

"I'm half-blood. Muggle mother, wizard father. They both died when I was 3," Hiro said, and Hiccup turned to look at him. Murdered by Death Eaters?

Hiro must have noticed the question in his eyes. "No, nothing to do with the war. Broom-flying accident. Dumb stuff like that still happens during wartime," he said lightly, though something in his face fell anyway. Down the table Tadashi frowned.

"My mom died during the war too," Hiccup said, looking down.

"May I ask what happened?" Matt asked softly. Hiccup sighed.

"A dragon killed her," he simply said, not in the mood to explain the role of Harry Potter in it.

"I'm sorry," Callum said, just as the hat announced another Ravenclaw. Hiccup moved to clap loudly, grateful for the distraction. A boy with black hair with faint blue streaks sat down next to Hiccup.

The other woman stood- shorter, but with far more muscle, and that same set to her jaw that her daughter sometimes got when she was focused. And a sword at her hip, which was a bit odd, but considering they were effectively surrounded by people in armor, she supposed it didn’t look too out of place. “And I’m her mother, Antiope. Are you hungry? We can offer you some fruits, something light until the midday meal.”

“Oh, that’s very kind of you.” The man offered a hand, a wide smile on his lips. “I’m Taiyang, Yang and Ruby’s dad. I’ve heard so much about your daughter and she lives up to every expectation.”

“She does indeed.” Antiope accepted the gesture, turning her gaze towards Ruby- and Yang, briefly, but mostly those deep blue eyes rested on the smallest person there, and that didn’t make her feel intimidated at all. “And we’ve heard much about your daughters as well.”

Silence fell upon the room until Pyrrha leaned closer to her. “Did you just quote an election campaign?”

“I panicked, okay, I’m trying.” She shot back in a low whisper, trying to ignore the irregular beating of her heart as her girlfriend’s parents exchanged a look.

“Mother. Be reasonable.” The redhead tried to keep her voice level even as the two women seemed to be having a silent, private conversation.

“Oh wow, really, Rubes? Really?” Yang set her hands on her lips, clearly caught between teasing her further and letting it go, because on the one hand she probably thought it was hilarious how red Ruby was turning but on the other, not in front of the parents, come on.

Taiyang whistled. “Wow, my little girl’s growing up.” He lightly bumped shoulders with his eldest. “Looks like you’ve got some catching up to do.”

“Yeah, hehehe, about that…” She reached up, running a hand through her hair. “Um, maybe not as much as you think?”

But she really couldn’t run anymore, even as she heard footsteps coming up behind her.

“So… what… I… lose?” Struggling to catch her breath, she turned her head to see Antiope kneeling down beside her, sword once again in its scabbard.

“No, you won. You eluded us until sunset, as tradition states.” She offered a smile, equal parts proud and kind. “We firmly believe that love gives wings to those who feel truly feel it. When two people care for each other that deeply, they can outrun anything, but the true strength of love comes not to aid running away. It comes to aid facing the things that trouble us deepest… but I have a feeling you already know that.”

Rolling over, she laid down and stared at the sky above, still working on catching her breath. “I… I used to be really nervous around other people. Meeting new people… it just wasn’t as easy for me as it was for Yang.” She glanced at the woman as she sat down beside her. “But with Pyrrha… I dunno. It’s like I can face down anything.”

“That is love, Little One,” she said with a chuckle. “You come to a far away land, to the heart of its people, and you come bearing news you don’t know how we’ll receive. That takes a type of courage people think is all too common until they find themselves lacking it entirely.” She sighed, reaching out to clap a hand on Ruby’s shoulder. “I’ve always trusted my daughter’s decisions. I may not understand them, but they’ve never steered her wrong.”

Antiope laughed, reaching to undo her sword belt, gathering up the leather and holding it out. Ruby sat up, accepting the gift with furrowed brows.

Summary: Nico lowered his eyes to his bedspread, suddenly acutely aware that he hadn’t replaced his Mythomagic comforter when he’d moved out of his dad’s house. He’d been too lazy to buy another, especially since his was still perfectly good. His soulmates usually thought it was kind of funny. His romantic partners, if they ever made it inside of Nico’s bedroom, knew Nico was a nerd and expected no less. At this moment, Nico wished he had something a little nicer. His cheeks grew red, stomach fluttering in that pleasant way only Will could give him, and for a moment, he considered the idea that Will might return his feelings.

But he should have known better. They were soulmates. Will just got up and left.//

In a world where romance means less than friendships, Nico falls in love with his platonic soulmate Will Solace and complicates his whole life.

Nico didn’t take Jason’s advice.

Well, he didn’t call the Chase-Jacksons. He didn’t know them. He didn’t even know if Jason had mentioned him and his dilemma. It would have been too weird, especially when this was a problem he could solve. All he had to do was get to Will, and things would be fine.

He let Will calm down for a few days more, and then he decided to swing by his apartment after work. That would be fine, he assured himself. He knew Will’s schedule like the back of his hand. He would be home then, and they could have a quick talk, and everything would go back to normal. Will would be his soulmate (nothing else, half of his brain whispered with a sharp longing for the curve of Will’s lips, his freckles, the way his calves stretched when he walked).

The motivation to keep from losing Will entirely stayed strong through the day, and by the time he parked down the street from Will’s apartment, Nico was solid in his resolve. This was what was best. He had to see him. It had to be okay.

Will, Cecil, and Lou Ellen didn’t exactly live on the high side of town like Nico and Hazel. Nico didn’t like to stand outside their door too long, especially with that pale, beady-eyed neighbor of theirs. When he knocked once, he waited five minutes. Then he knocked again. He peeked around the side of the building to the resident parking lot. Will’s car was there. So was Lou’s. Why weren’t they answering? It was only 6:04. Will especially took a while to wind down after a shift. There was no way he would have walked in and crashed on the couch. He was up. Why wasn’t he answering?

Nico lowered his eyes to the peephole in the middle of the doorframe. Oh.

He knocked again. After another minute, the door finally cracked open, and Lou Ellen Blackstone, 5’ nothing, skinny as can be, leaned to block the entrance.

“Nico,” she said, in a tone that she probably thought was neutral enough to keep him from suspecting anything.

“I want to see Will,” he said.

“Will’s not home,” she said. A shuffle from inside the apartment echoed to the door. She glanced back in concern before snapping her gaze back to Nico. “Can I take a message?”

“Since when do you take messages, Lou?”

Lou Ellen raised her chin defiantly. “Since I decided to be nice. Do you have an issue with that, Nico?” She crossed her arms and stretched up. So she was pissed. Probably on Will’s behalf. What the hell had he told her?

Nico clenched his teeth together. “Y ou have an issue with me. Lou, I just want to talk to Will. I don’t think that’s asking for much. Is he really so upset that he can’t even answer the door?”

Lou didn’t answer. She tellingly glanced back behind her.

Nico leaned a little closer to the door. “Will, I’m sorry! But this is kind of pathetic. We’re soulmates. We’re supposed to be able to talk to each other. Are you really going to hide in there behind your soulmates?”

If Lou Ellen had felt any sympathy for Nico, not that she’d shown it, it all disappeared. “What makes you think you have the right to see him right now? Will is not pathetic. You know that you-- You can’t blame him for being upset,” she said.

Nico’s shoulders slumped. “I’m not. I just--” He needed to see him. He needed to fix it.

Lou’s magenta lips stretched into a grimace. “If you didn’t live with Hazel, I’d punch you right now. Good night, Nico.”

Nico would be the first to admit he’d fallen asleep in a student lounge before. He’d spent four years at this university, and he’d grown to learn that sometimes the only way to get a decent amount of sleep was to curl up on a couch in a lounge and take a nap during a break. This guy took it to a whole new level. Nico had sat down after his class on grieving had ended, and he’d intended to finish his essay when a stocky underclassman wandered in as well, with a large bag instead of a backpack. He didn’t look at Nico. He didn’t even seem to realize he was there, actually. The guy run a hand through his fluffy blond hair and sat down on the opposite sofa, placing his bag slightly off to the side. He reached in, and Nico figured he was going to pull out some textbooks. That was fine. As long as people were studying quietly, Nico didn’t mind sharing the lounge. But then the guy pulled out a pillow and a blanket, and how did that fit in there? Nico stared blankly at the guy, who suddenly looked up at him.

“I didn’t get to bed until 10 last night. Homework,” he explained. “And then I had an 8 a.m. Mm. Need my rest.” He slumped back onto the couch and was out within seconds.

What the fuck?

Nico went to bed at 10 if he was sick. How could this guy think that was late? And be tired? Why was Nico watching him snore on the couch in the lounge as if it were more interesting than grieving?

Perhaps it was curiosity, or Nico’s innate dickishness that made him start pestering the guy. He tore off the erasers of the crappy pencils they handed out around campus that he always took because he was cheap. They more smudged than erased, so it didn’t hurt to get rid of them. That did nothing to Sleepy. Nico then moved on to tossing the pencils themselves. He’d started stealing Will’s, so he didn’t really need them. That did nothing either. He checked his phone for the time. 10:34. Still twenty minutes before he needed to get up to had to class. Presumably, Sleepy would get up then too. Twenty minutes to see if anything would wake this guy up, then.

It was after Nico threw a wadded brochure on study-abroads that he finally gave up. “God, what are you--sleeping beauty? Do I have to kiss you to wake you up?” he exclaimed, glancing around and realizing the lounge was empty save for them after he spoke. God. If someone had heard that.

“Prefer if you took me on a date first,” Sleepy muttered.

Nico froze, his ears suddenly pink. “You . . . heard that?”

Sleepy nodded, peeking a warm brown eye open. “You spent this whole time throwing things at me. Couldn’t sleep.”

Oh. Oh . Nico was a fucking moron.

Sleepy, luckily, didn’t seem too annoyed by Nico’s actions. He sat up and smiled, a nice smile that made it easy to relax. “I’m Clovis. Psych major. I have an unidentified sleep disorder. It’s difficult for me to stay awake for long periods of time,” he explained.

“Well, now I feel like a dick,” Nico said.

Clovis’s half-smile grew just slightly. “You can make it up to me by taking me out to dinner.”

Shit. Shit, Nico, a guy is hitting on you. Say something. Accept! Get a date!

His mouth didn’t listen to his brain very well. “Could you even stay awake for dinner?”

Clovis paused. “Probably not,” he admitted. “Maybe just treat me to pizza then. We can do it at my apartment. Text me?” He picked up the brochure Nico had tossed and unfolded it, scribbling his number below the email address for the program. Then he wadded it back up and tossed it at Nico’s head before grabbing his pillow, blanket, and bag and heading off down the hall.

Clovis, Nico thought. He was kind of cute. It wouldn’t hurt.

The Chase-Jackson house rested just outside of the city--close enough to everything they could need, but far enough out that Annabeth had a decent plot of land to develop their dream home. It was very beautiful, Nico had to admit as he walked up to the door. Jason had said Annabeth was incredible, but this was beyond what he’d anticipated.

The welcome mat sat in front of the steps of the porch, and Nico wiped the snow off of his boots before he climbed up the steps and rang the doorbell. It was no wonder the mat was down there. The porch was rather slick. He waited for a few moments, then heard a growing bark and a slam against the door. Muffled voices floated through the door, and a moment later, the door opened to reveal a tall blonde woman and a dark-haired man with his arms wrapped around a large dog behind her. The woman smiled congenially, though she looked a bit ragged, a few curls escaping her ponytail.

“Hi. You must be Jason’s friend. I’m Annabeth. This is my husband, Percy,” she said, pushing the sleeves of her sweater up and gesturing at the man behind her.

Percy beamed, his green eyes bright as his fingers curled a little tighter around the dog’s collar. “Hey! This is Mrs. O’Leary. Sorry, she gets a little excited about visitors,” he explained.

Nico forced a polite smile as he stepped inside and shut the door. “No problem. My dad has a dog a lot like her,” he said. Cerberus might have been worse, as he seemed like he had three personalities. He pulled off his hat and ran his hand over his face in attempt to warm up, ears and nose red from the cold. The house itself was a little warm, and he hesitantly reached to unbutton his coat.

“Oh-- Percy, show him where the coat rack is. I’m going to finish dinner,” Annabeth said. She turned and walked into another room, and Percy let Mrs. O’Leary go. She started to pounce on Nico, but a whistle from her master stopped her. Still, she bounced eagerly, all fluff and paws. If Nico knew these people at all, he’d have reached for the dog because dog . But since this was his first time meeting them, he figured he ought to hold back a little.

“Stay,” Percy ordered before pushing his way in front. “Sorry. Our coat rack is in a weird place. Well, it’s-- Annabeth says it’s more efficient, space-wise, and I just go along,” he explained as he pulled out the contraption she’d built into the house. “She knows best.”

After Nico had handed over his coat, Percy embarked on a tour of the house that illustrated just how little he understood of his wife’s design sense and how much he adored all of her choices in spite of that. The house was easy to navigate (thankfully, as Percy’s directions couldn’t have led a rat through a tube) and absolutely aesthetically stunning. They seemed like the most organized couple Nico had ever met, and they weren’t much older than he was. Nico was unwillingly jealous.

“So you’re one of Jason’s soulmates too,” Percy said as they walked along the stretch above the first floor living room. Nico really liked this place. If he didn’t like living in a townhouse so much, he might have told Percy and Annabeth to adopt him.

“Yeah,” Nico said. “Actually, I’m surprised we haven’t met. I knew he knew you, but he always acted like you lived far away.”

Percy waved his hand. “Well, we did. AB and I, we lived with our other soulmate out in California for some years. Then Grover and his new girlfriend decided to hit the road for a save-the-earth type deal, and Annabeth and I decided it might be time to move back to the east coast. She got a great job, and I found something decent for me. My mom and stepdad live up here as well, so it worked out.”

Nico tried not to react too much at the word soulmate in that context. It was weird to actually acknowledge that Percy and Annabeth were soulmates and in a romantic relationship. They certainly weren’t the first married soulmates Nico had ever met, but he’d never really imagined a romance.

Except for Will .

Percy seemed to notice where his thoughts were leading. “Why don’t we head down to the kitchen?” he suggested. “Annabeth is probably done by now. Or we can just hang out in the kitchen and bug her. Her eyes get kind of freaky when she’s mad. It’s funny.”

They headed down the staircase and turned into the kitchen, where Annabeth was balancing dishes and heading to the dining room. “Perfect timing,” she said. “Help me carry, boys.” Her voice left no room to argue, and Percy immediately reached for the dish that seemed ready to tip, as well as catching a dish that had looked to be perfectly stable. Nico raised a brow but said nothing as he passed those dishes to him.

When the table had been set up and they’d gone through the traditional compliments of the food, Annabeth immediately set her attention on Nico.

“Jason told us a little about your situation,” she said. “Will is his name?”

Nico choked on a carrot. Mrs. O’Leary bounded into the dining room and jumped on his back as if to give the doggy Heimlich maneuver.

“Missus, down,” Percy scolded. He snuck her a piece of meat. Annabeth rolled her eyes.

“Look, I’m not trying to push you or anything, but you did come to talk to us about that, right?” she asked. “Yes, Percy and I are soulmates. Yes, we love each other romantically. And I know we’re the exception to the rule. I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you. But you are soulmates. It will work out somehow.”

Nico lowered his fork, eyes on the tablecloth. “I don’t really know what I’m doing here. What can anyone do anyway?” he asked.

Annabeth looked something like an older sister with the way she smiled there. “We can support you. To be honest, I’m kind of glad Jason mentioned you. We haven’t had much time to settle into a social crowd yet. I mean, we know Leo and Piper, of course, but it seems like everyone’s changed so much since we last lived here.”

“That’s because you’re too busy at work,” Percy teased. His voice wasn’t bitter at all. He sounded so proud of his wife, like he wanted to brag to the world that she was the smartest, most talented architect to ever live.

“You love it,” she said as she leaned in for a kiss. Without any ceremony or even noticing that she’d ignored Nico in favor of her husband, she turned back to her guest. “Jason said you’re a mortician.”

Nico tried not to make a face. It wasn’t normally a subject he brought up upon first meeting someone new--at least, not anyone he actually wanted to know--as most people found his profession distasteful.

“I am,” he said.

“Cool,” Percy said. “Do you have any, like, stories of people coming back to life in their coffin?”

“Percy,” Annabeth said, her gray eyes sharp as she looked over at him. “Actually, do you?”

Nico snorted. “It’s . . . not really a common thing,” he said. “I mean, movies would like you to think so, but no. Most of my stories are a little more, uh--”

Annabeth leaned forward. “Tell us,” she demanded.

Nico’s eyes lifted to the ceiling, flipping through memories as if to search for just the right thing. “Right. Well. Once the hearse driver was running late, so he decided it would be a great idea to speed to the funeral home. The body half-fell out of the coffin. That was great to explain to the widower,” he said.

“Yikes,” Percy said, laughing around his spoonful of peas. Annabeth lightly swatted his cheek. He nuzzled into her hand without a second thought.

Nico had seen a lot of romantic couples over the years, but he’d never seen a couple so in sync, so completely comfortable with each other, even when they weren’t necessarily doing anything romantic. The closest any had come was Jason and Piper, who shared a soulmate and had been friends long before they’d added anything romantic to their relationship.

The part of Nico’s brain that couldn’t accept Will had no interest in him wondered how they would have worked together. The rest of Nico wanted to smash that part into bits. He must have been making a bitter expression, as Percy and Annabeth pulled apart, and Annabeth smiled sympathetically.

“I know this may not be the best advice from someone married to her soulmate,” she began, “but you should know you’ll get through it. Your soulmate as well. The important part of having soulmates is that good ones never give up the relationship, not entirely. Maybe he needs some time, but you’ll make it through.”

Percy nodded in agreement, the mirth dying from his eyes. “Yeah. That’s one of the hardest things Annabeth and I had to figure out. We agreed that if anything ever happens, and our romantic relation ends, we’ll make sure to stay together as soulmates. Because regardless of what I feel for her romantically, she is my soulmate. She understands me in a way no one else does, and I don’t want to let her go so easily.”

Disgusting. Nico would have thought those words would have made him even more bitter. Clearly Will didn’t care enough about their soulemateship to let him go so easily. And yet . . . maybe they were right. Maybe it would work out. Maybe it would just take time.

Mrs. O’Leary trotted in from another room, squishing her large body underneath the table.

“Missus,” Annabeth scolded half-heartedly as the dog’s movements bounced the tabletop. Her hands reached to glue the dishes down, though a few food items still sloshed around. She looked at her husband. “Your dog.”

“Isn’t she great?” Percy asked, reaching underneath the table to stroke her head. Annabeth couldn’t fight a smile for long.

As if she sensed who needed her presence most, Mrs. O’Leary settled at Nico’s feet. Her heavy, fluffy head on top of his feet, Nico was sure. Things would work out.

Nico needed to learn how to say no to Will. He really did.

“Let’s go on a double date for Valentine’s Day,” Nico muttered as he shuffled through his closet. “Let’s have this be the first time you meet my new girlfriend. Let’s actually go to a fancy restaurant where you have to dress up and look nice.”

“You should give her a break,” Clovis said with a yawn from Nico’s bed. He’d arrived at the townhouse dressed nicely, but his hair was already coming undone from where he’d fallen asleep on Nico’s bed, wrinkles in his finely pressed clothes. If they had more time, Nico might have had him undress and reiron his clothes, but Nico really wasn’t that concerned when they had to be at the restaurant in ten minutes, and he hadn’t even picked his own clothes yet. “She’s probably more nervous than you. You are his soulmate after all, and you’re kind of hard to impress.”

Nico furrowed his brow as he yanked a button-up off of his hanger, sliding it on over his undershirt. “I’m not hard to impress,” he said.

Clovis stared, warm brown eyes almost burning. “You kind of are.”

“I’m dating you.”

Clovis tossed a pillow in his direction, and Nico dodged, digging through his drawers to find a decent pair of pants. As he finished the base of his outfit, he grabbed a plain red tie, hands making the knot without a second thought after so many years of wearing a tie almost every day in his father’s house. Though he hadn’t struggled at all putting this ensemble together, clearly Clovis had never seen him dressed like this, as he was staring, mouth half-open.

“Happy Valentine’s Day,” Nico said a little softer, stepping up to his boyfriend and placing his hands on his shoulder. “You know, I would have rather stayed in with you and watched a movie. Or took a nap.”

Clovis shook his head. “We do that all the time,” he said. “It’s not a big deal to go out once, especially for Will. I know how much he means to you. Besides, I get to see you looking nice. It’s not a bad look for you.”

Nico smiled and leaned down for a kiss.

“Nico! Did you fall asleep again?” Hazel yelled from the kitchen. Damn his half-sister and her ever present need to be his alarm. Well, not damn her, Nico amended, pulling back from Clovis to check his hair in the mirror, then helping his boyfriend off of the bed and leading the way downstairs. He would have been late to far too many things for turning off his lip and going back to sleep if she wasn’t such an angel.

“We’re leaving,” Nico said as he walked through the kitchen. Hazel nodded from the kitchen table, her hair in a bun. He patted the bun, and she swatted at him. “Hey, I got you a Valentine’s gift. It’s on top of the fridge.”

“Why?” Hazel asked, looking up from her laptop.

“You like those orange chocolates. And I owe you.”

She smiled. “I know you do. But what are sister-soulmates for?”

At the risk of being too sappy, Nico wrapped his arms around her waist to give her a hug, then lifted her out of the chair and dropped her on the floor. “Bye, nerd. Get your nose back in the book.”

Hazel lifted her head, eyes bright with indignity. She launched herself at his calves, knocking him over. He fell into the chair, side hitting the seat. As soon as she’d had her revenge, she let go, straightening up and dusting herself. “Tell Will I said hi. Keep him in line, Clovis.”

“Will do,” Nico and Clovis said at the same time, entwining their hands and heading out the door.

They managed to arrive at the restaurant only five minutes late, which Nico counted as a win until they walked in and Will’s latest paramour lifted her head, snapped her gum, and said, “We’ve been waiting.” She was dressed in a blood red dress, a sheer scarf thing wrapped around her shoulders that couldn't have done anything to protect her from the cold. At her side, Will looked much more seasonably dressed, a hat covering his ears, a scarf tied tightly around his neck, and the wool coat Nico had bought him for Christmas.

“Things happened,” Nico said. “We’re here.”

“I figured they would. I made the reservation for 7:30, actually, in case you got held up at work,” Will said brightly, though he gave Nico a look that said, “Please tell her that’s what happened.”

Nico glanced to Clovis, who seemed to side with Will. Everyone always sided with Will when it came to Nico’s temper.

They were probably right to do so.

“If you made the reservation for then, why did you pick me up so early?” the woman asked, her dark eyes cold and sharp with her perfect eyeliner.

“It’s . . . Valentine’s Day,” said Will. “I wanted to spend time with you.”

“Great Valentine’s Day, sitting and waiting on your soulmate in a crowded restaurant, where I can’t even hear you speak,” she snapped.

Nico cleared his throat. Will smiled sheepishly.

“Oh, so Nico, Clovis, this is my girlfriend Drew Tanaka,” he said. “Drew, this is my soulmate Nico and his boyfriend Clovis.”

“Pleasure,” Drew said, clearly not pleased at all. Well. If she was going to be a bitch, Nico could be a dick right back.

“Let’s just get our table, yeah?” Clovis said, his hand grabbing Nico’s elbow. Nico settled back down, just slightly, looking over to Will. Will sent the both of them a grateful look.

Once they’d sat down, things didn’t get any better. The table had been set with a red tablecloth and glasses of water, a decently nice dinner by any college student’s standards.

“I don’t see anything good on this menu,” Drew said after skimming it lightly.

Will made an embarrassed expression. “I told you to check it out before I made the reservation,” he said softly.

“You know what I like,” she countered.

“I can’t remember everything, Drew,” he said, brows knitting together.

Shit. Nico leaned closer to Clovis. “They’re about to break up, aren’t they?”

“Looks that way,” Clovis replied, ducking his head and wiping condensation off of his glass.

“We should have stayed home.”

Clovis nudged his side. “Just relax. It’s one night.”

One night might be way too long, Nico thought. When Drew finally decided on a meal, she complained that it had taken too long to get her order. She complained that the restaurant was cold until Will offered his jacket, and then it was that Will’s jacket had cheap lining.

“Drew,” Will hissed, his brown skin rapidly growing a shade of red Nico hadn’t even known he could achieve. His jaw was tight, Adam’s apple bobbing.

“What?” she said. “I am who I am, Will.  You can’t change that.”

“All I asked was that you try to be nice for one night. Nico is my soulmate. I wanted you to make a good impression,” he said, voice growing slightly louder until Nico and Clovis couldn’t pretend they weren’t listening.

“You’re asking me to be someone I’m not.”

“That’s not what I--”

Drew shook her head, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “It was lovely to meet the two of you, but I think it’s time I head out,” she said. She tossed Will’s jacket back at him and strolled out of the restaurant ignoring her (ex?-) boyfriend’s blank stare.

Will looked to Nico and Clovis, swallowing thickly, pressing his lips together until they formed something like a smile. “I’m . . . sorry. This was a bad idea,” he said. “Ugh, and she already ordered.”

“I’ll take it home for Hazel,” Nico said. “She’s been studying so hard. I bet she forgot to make dinner anyway.”

“Hey, no,” Will said. “You two shouldn’t let me ruin your Valentine’s Day. Don't stick around here for my sake. I'll get the bill.”

Clovis smiled. “We weren’t planning on doing much anyway. Let’s just eat and catch a movie or something.”

“And you're not paying. You know it doesn't mean much to me to pay for a meal like this, so shut up and deal with feeling indebted. Or better yet, get over it." Nico's voice softened slightly. "You’ve got to come, Will. Clovis won’t stay awake for me, but he will for someone he has to impress."

“Maybe you just bore me,” Clovis replied.

Will cracked a smile. “If you’re sure . . . .”

“Positive. We want you to come,” said Clovis. Nico smiled over at him. He was a pretty great boyfriend.

Annabeth and Percy had said to give Will space. Nico acknowledged that that was a good idea. Nico himself rarely followed good ideas. He last a few days before he felt the urge to try again on his walk to his car after work.

Phone to his ear, his fingers felt cold even through his gloves, and he consoled himself that even if Will didn’t pick up the phone, Nico would at least be able to put his hands back in his pockets, where they’d be nice and warm. Instead, the dial tone faltered, and suddenly, there was something on the other side of the line. Nico’s heart stuttered as well, and he swallowed. After what felt like weeks upon weeks of being ignored (just slightly over a month, if Nico were being honest), he almost let out a sigh of relief. “Will,” he said.

“Hey,” Will said, his voice not as stilted as it had been the past few times they’d spoken. The bit of warmth had slipped back in, his smooth voice as soothing as ever. “Nico--”

“Please let me talk,” said Nico.

Will fell silent.

“You are my soulmate. I want you to know that,” Nico began. “Beyond anything, you will always be soulmate. And I know I’m not . . . super affectionate or anything, but you should never doubt that you mean as much to me as the rest of them. I wouldn’t want to lose one of them any more than I’d want to lose you. And I think it’s a bit fucking stupid to just ignore each other after only seven years. Hell, Hazel’s put up with me for twenty-five. She has first dibs on dumping me.”

For a moment, the line was so quiet, just a ruffle of static from Nico’s breaths and his fingers tapping on the phone. Then, finally, a soft snort echoed into Nico’s ear. Nico knew that snort. Will was laughing.

“I missed you,” he said softly. In spite of himself, Nico’s stomach flipped. He still loved Will, romantically and more.

“I missed you too,” Nico said. “I just . . . .” He couldn’t bring himself to say any more. Words had never been his strong suit, and none of them felt right to explain what he wanted to Will.

Will let out a breath, shaky through the phone. “I’m still not ready to hang out with you all the time, okay? I don’t think you get how I feel, Nico.”

Nico, closed his eyes, digging in his pocket with his other hand for his keys. “Okay,” he said as he unlocked his car and climbed inside, a little warmer for the lack of wind. “But you can try to explain it to me.”

Will was quiet. “Not yet,” he said.

“Work. Really?” Will asked.

“Just talk, Solace,” Nico said, not quite begging. Will indulged him anyway. Sitting there in his car alone, not even starting the engine, no heat on, Nico felt warmer than he had in weeks. He wasn’t going to lose Will. Not completely.

He shifted his phone so it rested on his shoulder, absently listening to Will’s stories of his coworkers as he started the car, before hooking the call to his car’s speaker.

“Cecil and Lou are getting pretty sick of me being home all the time, actually. I think they’ll be glad to know we talked,” Will said suddenly.

Nico paused, eyes glued to the red stoplight ahead of him. “Lou said she wanted to punch me.”

Will faltered. “I’m sorry. Maybe I shouldn’t have told them,” he said.

Nico shook his head, though Will couldn’t see him. “They’re your soulmates. You needed the support.”

“Yeah, but--” Will paused. “You’re my soulmate too. It was your business.”

“Until I told you. Then it was yours,” Nico replied.

“Still--”

“Will,” Nico interrupted, “just let it go.”

“. . . I should probably let you go. I need to eat before going into work,” Will said.

“Night shift again?”

Will scoffed. “Yeah. It’s what happens to us newbies. I’ll probably be working New Year’s Eve again.”

“Sorry,” said Nico.

“It’s fine,” Will said. “Hey, I’ll just-- I don’t know when I’ll see you again. Your birthday at the latest, okay? Don’t get mad if we don’t speak until then.”

“Okay,” Nico agreed.

“See you,” Will said as he hung up, not giving Nico a chance to respond.

“See you,” Nico replied anyway, watching as the light turned green. He blinked as he drove through and added, “I love you.”

I inhaled deeply, resting my head on Bambam’s shoulders. "Bam..?" I started, breaking the peaceful silence between us as we sat under the tree, watching the sun being set.

"Hmm?" He calmly answers and leans forward a bit, propping himself up in a better position. “What is it?” Bambam asks again, grabbing my cold hands that was resting on my lap.

I bit my lip, knowing that the words that I’m going to say to him will hurt us. Sighing, I answered what was on my mind. "I..” I hesitated. “I think we should stop seeing each other..." I spatted out, quickly.

Bambam quickly reacted, pulling me away from his shoulders to take a look at my expression, in hopes of a lie. “What did I say about lying? Come on, don’t joke like that.” He chuckles weakly, hoping that I am. However, I just kept my eyes locked with his in a serious and quiet mood, unable to tell him the lie that he was hoping for. 

When Bambam realized, his brows really perked up. "What? You’re not kidding? ..You don't want me? After all we promised? After all we’ve dreamed of together..you’re going to leave me hanging?" 

"N-no..” I lost my voice as I was unable to comfort him, my heart ached, and knowing that I’ve just broken his heart. “I'm just...” I took a look at him again, and I found it hard to continue. “I'm just trying to give you your best chance..." 

"But you are my best chance." Bambam leaned in to comfort me but all I could do was push him away. “No, I’m not. And you know it.” 

"Be honest, you know my dad is involved with horrible habits of gambling. I don't have a mom. Gangs banging up trying to break into our homes demanding money from my dad while we haven't had enough to pay for rent... I.... I don't want you to see me suffer." I explained miserably, unable to bring myself to look up at his sparkling eyes. 

“I- I don’t want to be pitied,” I admitted, turning away from his figure.

"Bu-"

"Besides...” I interrupted, still trying to convince him to leave. “..your parents don't appreciate me... from where I am from, your parents would be disappointed and.. I don't want that. You’re also boarding school abroad soon... and you- we know that both of us won't be going to together. We will live in separate worlds... "

"Y/N..." He soothes me, caressing my shoulders and rubbing them.

"Stop.." I broke into tears, but I tried holding my voice strong. I sniffled, “Long relationships will never work out anyways.” 

He pulled me in for a hug, turning me around so he could wipe those tears. His hand was brought up to my face, and I flinched, taking a step back from him. “I-I have to go, it’s late.” 

With that said, I turned around... my feet taking each step farther away from where I was... next to him.

"I'm sorry.... I'm sorry..." I sniffed.

I didn't want him to suffer with me, but most of all I didn't want to see him hurt.

I just... wanted him to be safe. And being with me is not the answer.

Weeks passed and no matter how much Bambam had thrown stones at my window I restrained myself from opening it and meeting him. I needed to get used to this feeling.

It's just a week before his flight to study abroad and I am getting more nervous... nervous of losing him... forever...

I could barely eat these days... all I could do was sit on the porch looking at Bam from the other side of the street...

I would see him in his dorm packing and sit on the couch with his hands over his face.

I really want to no... I need to talk to him for the last time. Just the day before he leaves, I was able to gather up the courage to knock on his door. 

The door swung open, there was the voice I haven't heard in quite a while. "Oh! Y/N! You haven't been visiting... although you're next door." Jackson pouts. "Is something wrong?" He asks, noticing how quiet I am. 

"Uhm... Is Bam home?" I asked quietly.

"No.. he just left to go buy some food for us as a last meal from him before he leaves to the airport tomorrow."

I felt stumped. The only time I can gather up these feelings, he's not here. I sighed,"....Well... if he gets back... tell him I was here.... looking for him." My hand went to the doorknob and turned it, before leaving.

My hands instantly came to rub my eyes, in frustration. "Why did I do that? I should've just stayed in the house."

I looked ahead and saw Bam and Jinyoung walking my way, they were concentrated on not spilling the food.

I rushed back into my house and peeked through the eyehole. "I miss you," I whispered with an aching heart.

My phone instantly rang and I ran to checked what it was. It was from dad... 

"Dad?" I answered full of nervousness.

"Y/N... "

"Dad?! Dad!! Dad!! " I yelled into the phone, panicking as I couldn't hear his voice anymore. There was no reply from him at all. I grew scared, and tears rushed to fill my eyes. What do I do?

"If you want your dad to live, bring in the money by tomorrow, 7 am sharp at the club. I'm asking for double. 8,000,000 dollars." The raspy voice answered after a while, replacing my dad's voice.

"N-no Please... I beg you... let him go." I cried.

"That little boyfriend of yours and you will be dead if it's late. Might as well make it into a blood puddle of three. Sounds more interesting." He ended the call quick and I curled myself into a ball on the floor, frightened.

My doorbell rang and I ran up to see who it was, Bam was outside.

"What do I do..?" I slid down the door, not wanting to make a sound. hoping he realizes I'm not home

I couldn't bring myself to open it. Not at the moment.  

I cried quietly hoping he will be gone soon, from my door and from here... I'm tired of him having to be part of this issue. 

"Y/N. I  know you're in there... Please open the door. I'm worried." Bambam pounded.

"Go away," I whispered, in hopes that he will eventually just go.

"If you won't open I will stay out here all night."

My heart sank. "No... please, please leave." I said immediately.

"No, let me be with you just for tonight."

"I won't open the door if you don't leave."

"You promise?"

"M.. I-I promise.." And soon enough, he left. 

I opened the door and brought a blanket with me on the porch.

When I woke up I was on my couch. Sleeping next to Bam.

"Ah--..." I woke him up and got up in astonish.

"Y/N!" He hugged me tightly and I couldn't help but hug back. I can't lie, I miss him.

"How did you get in here?" I asked.

"You left it unlock, and remember, I came back." He answered, snuggling his head in my shoulders.

He came..back..? Those words ran through my head.

"Still, why am I on the couch?"

"I carried your fat ass here."

"Hey-!"

He leaned in for a tighter hug  and I tried to pull away but he was too strong, "Just for a minute." He whispers.

"Leave. Now." I pointed to the door, noticing what the time was. 6:50.

"Y/N. I know you still love me-."

"No. I don't" I cut him. 

"You do." He still insisted on hearing it.

"I said, I don't," I repeated.

"You wouldn't have walked in into our dorm looking for me if you didn't miss me. You wouldn't have left the house, and waited outside if you didn't want me here."

I sat back down, surrendering. "You're right," I admitted helplessly.

"I love you." 

"I can't" I pulled away from hugging him, and convinced him to leave before he's late.

5 more minutes. I took a taxi to the club and now it was already 7:08, I'm late.

I arrived there and already the gang was getting in the car ready to leave off elsewhere.

They were wiping their hands with some white cloth, full of red.

"NO!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, knowing and realizing what I was too late.

I couldn't think straight... just where were they going....

Bambam.

I finally turned around and ran to the airport.

I felt like dying because by he's leaving and I left him hurt. I ran up to catch up with Bambam and the members but I couldn't find them anywhere.

Just a couple feet away, I saw Bam standing alone, looking down on his phone and right behind him was the group of gang ready to stab him.

I didn't realize what just happened, but before I knew it. It was me on the floor, with Bam holding me in his arms. I guess I took the stab... 

People screamed of horror and soon the airport was a race of horses running for their lives.

Security came, but all I could see was Bambam crying on my shoulders. The lights were dimming, or it was me who was losing conscious. 

He was begging me to stay and be with him, he was crying for help, he was screaming and cursing for not have known anything and I was lying there lifeless, smiling at such a beautiful sight.

Seeing how much he cared... it pains me more.

"I love you," I whispered.

Lloyd’s of London, a 300-year-old insurance body, collects more than 33 billion pounds in gross premium every year. Its history goes back to the 17th century.

In 1906, when a major earthquake destroyed more than 80 percent of the Californian city of San Francisco, Lloyd paid out all the policyholder claims, irrespective of the terms of their policies. That cemented Lloyd’s reputation in the American market.

However, in the 1990s, this insurance behemoth was brought to its knees by a risk that had gone unnoticed for decades. After California earthquake episode, Lloyd started underwriting wide-ranging general liability cover to US businesses, including asbestos manufacturers.

Thousands of employees who had worked in asbestos plants were diagnosed with asbestosis, a deadly lung disease, twenty years later. These workers claimed the compensation from their former employer in 1990s. The employer, in turn, claimed it to the insurance companies like Lloyd who wrote the policy in the 1960s. Lloyd had failed to understand the nature of future risk and thus faced near bankruptcy.

Asbestosis is a classic example of a “long-tail” risk – one that can result in insurance payouts years after an original policy was first underwritten. Many of Lloyd’s policies were open peril policies, i.e., they covered any claim not excluded. That was a huge blunder.

In the field of software security, a network firewall is a way to thwart hackers and malicious programs from entering your system. One way a network firewall works is to rely on a whitelist instead of a blacklist.

In other words, access by default is blocked for everybody except those who are present in the whitelist. If you take the blacklist approach, you’re blocking people on the blacklist but those who are not in that list have access – similar to Lloyd’s open peril policies.

So that was Lloyd’s first mistake, i.e., to assume cover for a risk which they didn’t understand. And the second mistake was to not account for an unknown risk.

In insurance jargon, the cost arising out of such long-tail risks are called IBNR – incurred but not reported.

The triumph of Warren Buffett’s annual letters is in delivering a remarkably useful explanation of how the world of business and investing works. With his inexhaustible font of wit and wisdom, this is how Warren Buffett explained the idea of long-tail hidden costs in his 1985 annual letter –

A man was traveling abroad when he received a call from his sister informing him that their father had died unexpectedly. It was physically impossible for the brother to get back home for the funeral, but he told his sister to take care of the funeral arrangements and to send the bill to him. After returning home he received a bill for several thousand dollars, which he promptly paid. The following month another bill came along for $ 15, and he paid that too. Another month followed, with a similar bill. When, in the next month, a third bill for $15 was presented, he called his sister to ask what was going on. “Oh”, she said. “I forgot to tell you. We buried Dad in a rented suit.

Reading Buffett’s letter is an experience akin to having the top of one’s head removed for repairs. Buffett wrote the above anecdote in the context of the insurance industry. And although I have no economic studies I can cite to back this but I sense that the idea of “Rented Suit Liabilities” can be extended to other businesses and even our lives.

Martin Fowler is a British programmer and a world known authority on software architecture. Reflecting over Fowler’s acute observations about how software should be built has completely rearranged the interior decoration of my mind. Many times. He says –

If you can get today’s work done today, but you do it in such a way that you can’t possibly get tomorrow’s work done tomorrow, then you lose.

One of the most important principles of software engineering is to write code which is easily maintainable and extendable. But that requires deep thinking and a lot of mental effort. Since most software is built in the face of aggressive deadlines, software developers find it convenient to gloss over the design principles and slap together a hacky code which somehow works.

Imagine building a car with lego and instead of connecting two blocks with an appropriate connector, you glue them together with fevicol. It will work, but tomorrow if someone wants to replace a block, it becomes hard. In software, this is called ‘creating a technical debt.’ Sounds similar to rented suit liabilities, doesn’t it?

The first no-brainer which creates long-tail hidden risks is lack of integrity. And it applies to both – personal as well as corporate conduct. Every time a company’s management tries to get away with minor corporate governance issues, they might think they’re sweeping things under the carpet but they are actually laying the foundation of a graveyard which will soon be housing corpses buried in rented body bags.

In fact, any activity which focuses on short-term results at the expense of long-term benefits sows the seeds of rented suit liabilities. The hidden nature of rented suit liability comes from our unwillingness to think deeply about our decisions beforehand.

Another source of these hidden risks is when the incentives of decision makers are at odds with those who have to live with the long-term consequences of those decisions. For example, a CEO can slash the R&D and marketing expenses and boost the earnings of a company for a few quarters. That earns him a fat bonus and by the time the long-term effects of those expense-cuts start rearing their head, the CEO usually makes an unceremonious exit with a big severance package, and the shareholders are left washing their hands in the air.

Not just in business and investing, rented suit liabilities plague most of us in our non-investing endeavors too. Cut corners on exercising or eating healthy today, and it’s an invitation to rented suit liabilities.

Spending all the income today and postponing the savings? Well, isn’t it akin to accumulating the rented suit liabilities?

Nick Maggiulli, in his fantastic post on Hidden Costs, explores a very interesting question – If you’re offered $100 million on the condition that you have to accept this money publicly during a widely televised event, would you take the offer?

Had you posed this question to me a few years back, I would have said yes with gleeful confidence. However, now I am not so sure. In fact, I explored this subject sometime back in my post Inverting the Money Problem.

Here’s what Nick writes –

Time and time again I have seen how our society idealizes things that are littered with hidden costs. We want the great body, but without the reps. We want the returns, but without the risks. We want the lake house, but without the frozen pipes bursting because we forgot to put in antifreeze. We can idolize wealth, status, fame, and beauty all we want, but we don’t think about what happens if we ever actually get them…

We can never avoid all the hidden costs for the only way to do that is not to take any decisions. And if we tried to do that, it would leave us paralyzed.

So, what’s my point? Instead of throwing caution to the wind and jumping on decisions, we should think hard about what rented suit liabilities may emerge from our actions. And one of the mental tricks that helps is an idea called premortem.

Anne Duke, in her wonderful book Thinking in Bets, writes –

A premortem is an investigation into something awful, but before it happens. We all like to bask in an optimistic view of the future. A premortem is where we check our positive attitude at the door and imagine not achieving our goals. Imagining a headline that reads “We Failed to Reach Our Goal” challenges us to think about ways in which things could go wrong that we otherwise wouldn’t if left to our own devices.

Objectively, rented suit liabilities and hidden costs are simply the consequences of our decisions. Nothing more nothing less. With the benefit of hindsight, we call them liabilities because they turn out to be undesirable.

What if those decisions resulted into something which creates value? Rented suit asset, if your will. Or maybe hidden assets. After all, the rented suit was an asset for the guy who gave it on rent. That’s an interesting line of thought, isn’t it?

im 20..i own a car. no tickets and no accidents i have had my license for a yr and half where can i find the cheapest car insurance?

I just got an expired registration and no insurance ticket.?

I just found out my registration expired back in Oct of 2008. I don't pay insurance because it is a scam, they don't help you when you need it, and they hike your rates when you claim something even though that is what you pay them for in the 1st place. But I had 2 stickers on my car. One that said November 11. and one that said October 08. So I thought that the newest sticker meant that is when the experation was. But the officer said November is the 11th. I am like yes, but why would they write the number down when you can read it right there? That means 2011. On top of this, I never got a notice from my dmv. so now I have to go to court over this miss undestanding and I can't help but feel I just got cheated by the police and the DMV because they failed to properly lable their sticker and failed to give me a notice. I checked my tags just a month ago in fact which is why I knew it expired in 2011 but the officer just refuses to see it as a miss understanding. Is there a legal service I can go through to get this ticket written off as a zero considering the fact I pretty much just got screwed due to the way the laws don't actually protect the innocent?""

My husband and I recently purchased a home and have a baby on the way. We are desperately searching for a solid insurance company to purchase a 20yr level term life policy. I have gotten a quote from an independent insurance agent that suggested for Primerica at $95/mo (for both of us with a disability waiver rider) (note: agent is family member), one from SelectQuote for Banner Life (never heard of them) at $64.97/mo for same coverage and waiver, and one from another insurance finder for ING at $72.70. ING has had a good rating but I think they have just been demoted slightly from AM Best and S&P. Any info I find online for customer reviews are all negative for every company I look at (not a single positive review for any). I'm not quite sure how these rates vary so widely. I would rather spend a couple extra dollars a month for peace of mind but I am truly at a loss of what to do. Can anyone make any suggestions or recommendations for a company to go with or look into? My mom sent my dad today to get it written on company letterhead, etc. and he came back with an over $2,000 estimate - it looks like they actually want to pull the locks out and replace a computer??? So my mom is saying we're not putting in a claim because our insurance rates will increase (even though no one has said they would increase) in the meantime I have to worry about my car being stolen (I have a club on it), people going into it, etc. So, typically, would one's auto insurance rates increase after putting in a claim for theft? Does it make a difference if it's $700 or $2,000? I would just figure the insurance company wants your car to be as safe as you do so you don't have to claim even more for a stolen car.""
