MLMs are the mirror-world version of community organizing
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2025/02/05/power-of-positive-thinking/#the-socialism-of-fools
In her unmissable 2023 book Doppelganger, Naomi Klein paints a picture of a "mirror world" of right wing and conspiratorial beliefs that are warped, false reflections of real crises:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/05/not-that-naomi/#if-the-naomi-be-klein-youre-doing-just-fine
For example, Qanon's obsession with "child trafficking" is a mirror-world version of the real crises of child poverty, child labor, border family separations and kids in cages. Anti-vax is the mirror-world version of the true story of the Sacklers and their fellow opioid barons making billions on Oxy and fent, with the collusion of corrupt FDA officials and a pliant bankruptcy court system. Xenophobic panic about "immigrants stealing jobs" is the mirror world version of the well-documented fact that big business shipped jobs to low-waged territories abroad, weakening US labor and smashing US unions. Cryptocurrency talk about "decentralization" is the mirror-world version of the decay of every industry (including tech) into a monopoly or a cartel.
Klein is at pains to point out that other political thinkers have described this phenomenon. Back in the 19th century, leftists called antisemitism "the socialism of fools." Socialism – the idea that working people are preyed upon by capital – is reflected in the warped mirror as "working people are preyed upon by international Jewish bankers."
The mirror world is a critical concept, because it shows that far right and conspiratorial beliefs are often uneasy neighbors with real, serious political movements. The swivel-eyed loons have a point, in other words:
https://locusmag.com/2023/05/commentary-cory-doctorow-the-swivel-eyed-loons-have-a-point/
Once you understand the mirror world, you start to realize that many right wing conspiracists could have been directed into productive movements, if only they'd understood that their problems were with systems, not sinister individuals (this is why Trump has ordered a purge of any federally funded research that contains the word "systemic"):
https://mamot.fr/@[email protected]/113943287435897828
This also explains why the "tropes" of right wing conspiratorialism sometimes echo left wing, radical thought. I once had a (genuinely unhinged) dialog with a self-described German "progressive" who told me that criticizing the finance industry as parasitic on the real economy was "structurally antisemitic." Nonsense like this is why Klein's "mirror world" is so important: unless you understand the mirror world, you can end up believing that "progressive" just means "defending anything the right hates."
Historian Erik Baker is the author of a new book, Make Your Own Job: How the Entrepreneurial Work Ethic Exhausted America, which has some very interesting things to say about the mirror world:
https://www.hup.harvard.edu/books/9780674293601
In a recent edition of the always-excellent Know Your Enemy podcast, the hosts interviewed Baker about the book, and the conversation turned to the subject of pyramid schemes, the "multilevel marketing systems" that are woven into so many religious, right-wing movements:
https://www.dissentmagazine.org/blog/know-your-enemy-the-entrepreneurial-ethic/
MLMs have it all: prosperity gospel ("God rewards virtue with wealth"), atomization ("you are an entrepreneur and everyone in your life is your potential customer"), and rabid anti-Communism ("solidarity is a trick to make you poorer").
The rise of the far right can't be separated from the history of MLMs. The modern MLM starts with Amway, a cultlike national scam that was founded by Jay Van Andel and Richard DeVos (father-in-law of Betsy DeVos).
Rank-and-file members of the Amway cult lived in dire poverty, convinced that their financial predicament was their own fault for not faithfully following the "sure-fire" Amway method for building a business. Andrea Pitzer's gripping memoir of growing up in an Amway household offers a glimpse of the human cost of the cult:
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2025/01/amway-america/681479/?gift=j9r7avb6p-KY8zdjhsiSZxYkntna5M_rYEv4707Zqqs
Amway – and MLMs like it – don't just bleed out their members by convincing them to buy mountains of useless crap they're supposed to sell to their families, while enriching the people at the top of the pyramid who sell it to them. The "toxic positivity" of multi-level marketing cults forces members deep into debt to pay for seminars and retreats where they are supposed to learn how to repair the personal defects that keep them from being "successful entrepreneurs." The topline of the cult isn't just getting rich selling stuff – they're making bank by selling false hope, literally, in Hilton ballrooms and convention centers across the country, where hearing an MLM scammer berate you for being a "bad entrepreneur" costs thousands of dollars.
Amway destroyed so many lives that Richard Nixon's FTC decided to investigate it. The investigation wasn't going well for Amway, which was facing an existential crisis that they were rescued from by Nixon's resignation. You see, Nixon's successor, Gerald Ford, was the former Congressman of Amway co-founder Jay Van Andel, who was also the head of the US Chamber of Commerce, the most powerful business lobbyist in America.
At Ford's direction, the FTC exonerated Amway of all wrongdoing. But it's even worse than that: Ford's FTC actually crafted a rule that differentiated legal pyramid schemes from illegal ones, based on Amway's destructive business practices. Under this new rule, any pyramid scheme that had the same structure as Amway was presumptively legal. Every MLM operating in America today is built on the Amway model, taking advantage of the FTC's Amway rule to operate in the open, without fear of legal repercussions.
MLMs prey on the poor and desperate: women, people of color, people in dying small towns and decaying rustbelt cities. It's not just that these people are desperate – it's that they only survive through networks of mutual aid. Poor women rely on other poor women to help with child care, marginalized people rely on one another for help with home maintenance, small loans, a place to crash after an eviction, or a place to park the RV you're living out of.
In other words, people who lack monetary capital must rely on social capital for survival. That's why MLMs target these people: an MLM is a system for destructively transforming social capital into monetary capital. MLMs exhort their members to mine their social relationships for "leads" and "customers" and to use the language of social solidarity ("women helping women") to wheedle, guilt, and arm-twist people from your mutual aid network into buying things they don't need and can't afford.
But it's worse, because what MLMs really sell is MLMs. The real purpose of an MLM sales call is to convince the "customer" to become an MLM salesperson, who owes you a share of every sale they make and is incentivized to buy stock they don't need (from you) in order to make quotas. And of course, their real job is to sign up other salespeople to work under them, and so on.
An MLM isn't just a pathogen, in other words – it's a contagion. When someone in your social support network gets the MLM disease, they don't just burn all their social ties with you and the people you rely on – they convince more people in your social group to do the same.
Which brings me back to the mirror world, and Erik Baker's conversation with the Know Your Enemy podcast. Baker starts to talk about who gets big into Amway: "people who already effectively lead by the force of their charisma and personality many other people in their lives. Right? Because you're able to sell to those people, and you're able to recruit those people. What are we talking about? Well, they're effectively recruiting organizers, people who have a natural capacity for organizing and then sending them out in the world to organize on behalf of Christian capitalism."
Listening to this, I was thunderstruck: MLM recruiters are the mirror world version of union organizers. In her memoir of growing up in Amway, Andrea Pitzer talks about how her mom would approach strangers and try to lead them through a kind of structured discussion:
Everywhere we went—the mall, state parks, grocery stores—she’d ask people whether they could use a little more money each month. “I’d love to set up a time to talk to you about an exciting business opportunity.” The words should have seemed suspect. Yet people almost always gave her their number. Her confidence and professionalism were reassuring, and her enthusiasm was electric, even, at first, to me. “What would you do with $1 million?” she’d ask, spinning me around the kitchen.
This kind of person, having this kind of dialog, is exactly how union organizers work. In A Collective Bargain, Jane McAlevey's classic book on labor organizing, she describes how she would seek out the charismatic, outgoing workers in a job-site, the natural leaders, and recruit them to help bring the other workers onboard:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/23/a-collective-bargain/
Organizer training focuses on how to have a "structured organizing conversation," which McAlevey described in a 2019 Jacobin article:
“If you had a magic wand and could change three things about life in America [or her town or city or school], what would you change?” The rest of your conversation needs to be anchored to her answers to that question.
https://jacobin.com/2019/11/thanksgiving-organizing-activism-friends-family-conversation-presidential-election
The MLM conversation and the union conversation have eerily similar structures, but the former is designed to commodify and destroy solidarity, and the latter is designed to reinforce and mobilize solidarity. Seen in this light, an MLM is a mirror world union, one that converts solidarity into misery and powerlessness instead of joy and strength.
The MLM movement doesn't just make men like Rich De Vos and Jay Van Andel into billionaires. MLM bosses are heavy funders of the right, a blank check for the Heritage Foundation. Trump is the MLM president, a grifter who grew up on the gospel of Norman Vincent Peale – a key figure in MLM cult dynamics – who tells his followers that wealth is a sign of virtue. Trump boasts about all the people he's ripped off, boasting about how getting away with cheating "makes me smart":
https://pluralistic.net/2024/12/04/its-not-a-lie/#its-a-premature-truth
The corollary is that being cheated means you're stupid. Caveat emptor, the motto of the cryptocurrency industry ("not your wallet, not your coins") that spent hundreds of millions to get Trump elected.
Tech has its own mirror world. The people who used tech to find fellow weirdos and make delightful and wonderful things are mirrored by the people who used tech to find fellow weirdos and call for fascism, ethnic cleansing, and concentration camps.
In Picks and Shovels, my next novel (Feb 17), I introduce readers to a fictitious 1980s religious computer sales cult called Fidelity Computing, run by an orthodox rabbi, a Catholic priest and a Mormon rabbi:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865908/picksandshovels
Fidelity is a faith scam, a pyramid scheme that is parasitic upon the bonds of faith and fellowship. Martin Hench, the hero of the story – a hard-fighting high tech forensic accountant – goes to work for a competing business, Computing Freedom, run by three Fidelity ex-employees who have left their faiths and their employers to pursue a vision of computers that is about liberation, rather than control.
The women of Computing Freedom – a queer orthodox woman who's been kicked out of her family, a Mormon woman who's renounced the LDS over its opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment, and a nun who's left her order to throw in with the Liberation Theology movement – are all charismatic, energetic, inspirational organizers.
Because of course they are – that's why they were so good at selling computers for the Reverend Sirs who sit at the top of Fidelity Computing's pyramid scheme.
Hearing Baker's interview and reading Pitzer's memoir last week made it all click together for me. Not just that MLMs destroy social bonds, but that within every person who gets sucked into an MLM, there's a community organizer who could be building the bonds that MLMs destroy.

I have so many thoughts about this but I hesitate to put too much weight on them because they're anecdotal. I have had to work in education in a way that wasn't my choice. I think my favorite parts of the job were making copies and cleaning to be honest. I wasn't a teacher, but an aid basically. The times I did have to act in a role similar to a teacher, I really disliked. It's not the kind of work I like doing because I don't like being in front of people or talking. There were a lot of people in a similar position to me, who felt neutral at best about the job. I don't want to make any generalizations, but the people who were really passionate about it did seem like they had that fundemental desire to exercise power over vulnerable people. And they seemed to be offended that other people in our position were not as intense as them. I remember talking about feeling like there was way too much pressure on the students to do well in these class and it was natural that a lot of them just weren't intrested in the subjects, and one of the more passionate people working at my company got mad at that and said "They need to make their OWN fun" and overall didn't like the idea that someone should be understanding towards students who didn't care that much about something they weren't interested in.
Other people who felt similar to me got similar pushback of course. The managers of this company that supplied teachers aids to local schools mostly had been in our position in the past, and of course they also tended to be that 'type'. They frequently suggested that we should do things to 'engage' the kids that to me felt intrusive and pushy.
Anyway that's a long way to say that I would also really like to read a book about that. I can imagine that sort of things actually filters people who are probably better suited to those roles out in favor of controlling bullies.
with all due modesty this was a fucking banger of a text message for me to compose after 10 hours in the emergency room and 30 hours without sleep

... TOXIC BOYFRIENDS AND EXES / ꩜
with ... nagi seishiro, itoshi rin, isagi yoichi x gn!reader
warnings ... cheating (rin), fem love interest (rin), lying (rin, isagi), parental issues-ish (isagi), nagi is just a bum (nagi), tiny emotional manipulation (isagi)
part one reo, sae, oliver
"SHE'S JUST A FRIEND" ꩜ ITOSHI RIN
you've known for quite a while that rin has had a... worrying childhood, to say the least. you're also aware that someone else has been his guiding light through his early teens, but is now long gone in the past. or that's what you thought. rin has been silent after hearing the news that his childhood "friend" recently moved back into town, but it's obvious that something else is going on.
especially when he's been visiting a certain house multiple times per week without telling you.
you've been aware of it for longer than he thinks. the moment you texted him "where are you?" instead of asking him to come home, he switched off sharing his location for good. he'll tell you he's just on a jog, but he's said it himself that he doesn't like bringing his phone because its too heavy. it becomes obvious when she starts coming to his games, waving and catching all of his attention while wearing one of his jerseys. you would know, because you accidentally stained one of them when you wore it.
even worse when his own brother that was miles away texted you, asking if you and rin were together. how did he even get your number? and why did rin not tell him you were already years deep into a relationship? oh, rin said he's stuck between the person he loves and the person he trusts? well, that shouldn't really be a question, should it? he should love and trust you, why is there somebody else that he could "pick"?
the break up was mutual. you could tell he was upset about it, but not as much as you, and you wonder why... maybe it's because he ended up in a relationship with said childhood friend only days later. you don't mean to pry in their business, but it's hard not to when you realise everywhere they go together, you've been with him before. this time, he's holding her hand, he's not hiding from the camera, he's smiling. rin has never smiled for you before. it hurts, it really hurts, but you're glad he didn't let things drag on. at least there's something left for you in his heart.
if he didn't love you in the first place, he should've just let you know from the beginning. it seems like you were some sort of test subject for his future.
BABY SYNDROME ꩜ NAGI SEISHIRO
nagi always puts in the bare minimum. you figured "maybe he puts in more effort for things he's passionate about?". well, one certainly is football; all of a sudden he has enough stamina to run a marathon and actually use his strength. since you're dating, he's passionate about you too, right?
keep lying to yourself. it's always you reaching out first, it's always you having to go to his house, it's always you waiting outside of his classrooms. on more than one occasion have you called him, been ignored under the thesis of "i'm too tired to talk, maybe tomorrow." and then being left on delivered for the next twenty four hours. and the cycle repeats over, and over, and over again. the last thing you wanted to end up being was a second reo (sorry to him, he's a lost cause) but when you're having to put his socks on for him like a toddler, unwillingly after he begs for help, that's where you draw the line. he's not a grandpa, and he's not sore. why would he need help?
it was unsurprisingly easy to break up with him. he let you go with ease, and it's not like he was going to argue to make him stay. one less person makes one less hassle, right? afterwards, it's inconvenience after inconvenience for him. now nobody wakes him up in the morning, or helps him with his missing homework, or does all of the work on group assignments so he can go "train". who's going to cook for him now? because it's not you or reo, and ordering takeaway is too much work.
nagi texted you to ask to get back together. you asked why. he said "it makes both of our lives easier". hell no.
MAMA'S BOY ꩜ ISAGI YOICHI
isagi is such a good boyfriend. honestly, you wouldn't be surprised if he was the one you ended up marrying. he's sweet, his parents are sweet, everything was perfect. was perfect.
you don't know where or when you messed up, but isagi's mom doesn't seem to like you that much anymore. was it how you got awkward and didn't know how to respond? no, usually his dad helps you through conversations. were you a bad influence? no, surely not. isagi knows his own standards, and sometimes his attitude is worse than yours.
nowadays, isagi looks a bit nervous when you ask to come over. your usual routine together was completely disrupted. you can tell he's subtly avoiding you or keeping conversations brief. he doesn't even hold your hand when you're walking around school anymore. this man willingly used to sprint from your period to the other side of the school just to make sure you got to your class safely, and now, nothing. and why is he wiping his hands with disgust when he's the one sweating buckets? he would've apologised if it was his fault, so it's something to do with you.
"hey, so... my mom doesn't want us together..." well, excuse you? he's stuttering, trying to come up with excuses, but you don't even want to hear them. having your healthy relationship broken up by his mom? and what if you married him hypothetically? would he willingly divorce if his mom said to do it? you know he still loves you, judging from his longing glances and half smiles in your direction. you know it wasn't completely his decision. but if he really loved you, then creating a barrier between the two of you when she wasn't even around didn't make sense at all. he would risk his life for you, but not disobey her loose commands.
on some random important day, valentines or whatever, he tries to ask you out. he wants to "start over". can you even be angry when he looks so remorseful? coupled with flowers, your favourite sweet treats and everything... oh, you swear you can see tears in his eyes. maybe you'll think about it.

Something about Kinich’s uniform HAS to break the rules in some way, shape, or form. He’d wear headphones until being told to take them off… then proceeding to keep them around his neck. He’d also over-accessorize with black and silver jewelry and piercings.
But if that wasn’t enough already, he will always be seen with some sort of handheld video game console for some reason. He’s really good at pretty much any and every video game he has, it’s very impressive actually.
His appearance is usually very well put together — if you don’t include the dark, tired, circles under his green eyes. It gives people the impression that he stays up all night playing video games (which isn’t entirely wrong).
But you have to admit, those dark, lidded, eyes with his almost perfect black eyeliner makes him look all the more attractive.
He’s a very athletic student, having played on different sports teams in the past. He’s probably one of the first kids picked when choosing teams in P.E.
I’m pretty sure Kinich is based off of Ancient Mayan culture, but (don’t shoot me) I really like the idea of him being bilingual in English and Spanish. Like, he can take a Spanish elective or something?
His favorite subjects are math and science.
The type of kid to sit in the back corner of the class to play games on his phone.
Kinich has a very blunt and cold personality towards about everyone. Especially people he dislikes or finds annoying. But when it comes to you people he likes, he’s a bit less rude.
Kinich is in the School’s art club (along with Xiao), and his most favorite thing to do in there is painting. Although, he hates all of the effort it takes in scrubbing the dried paint off his skin. It’s a really tiring process.
I like to believe that he’d like using more colors when drawing or even writing notes. Like, using different colored highlighters on his notes.
He’s also started a video game club at the beginning of the year, making himself the President. You would think that because his introverted personality he wouldn’t want to be the president of literal club, but he honestly doesn’t mind it at all.
Many students know Kinich for his very obvious love for video games. Which is pretty hard to go unnoticed due to his
backpack literally being decked out with pins and keychains of pixelated characters from a variety of different game franchises.
As a yandere, Kinich would be more possessive and obsessive. His most favorite thing in the world is to be by your side. You’re just too perfect to be left alone in his eyes.
His desire to always have his eyes on you would grow into bit of an… obsession, so to speak. Maybe following you home every evening to make sure you’re safe isn’t so wrong right?
Kinich may be a bit overprotective as well…

This is a gold mine. It goes back farther than 500 years and you can search by time period or subject matter as well as the individual words. When I was working on a long fic about 10 years ago, I consulted the online etymological dictionary frequently, but this resource doesn't allow such specific searches, nor can you really search for commonly used phrases, such as the delightful 16th century phrase, "eel skin merchant" or "selling eel skins" which just means a liar or a bullshitter, owing to the unlikelihood that a person would try to sell such a useless and unpleasant item.
A cursory look through it I found so much relevant to my interests. Especially hilarious are words that I think Thomas Cromwell might have coined, or at least been among the first to print for example:
Abbey-lubber: a waster or fool that is in Holy Orders, 1538
Oh, and our friend Erasmus, the lettuce eater, calls out crooked lawyers as "ambidexters" (meaning playing both ends...hmmmm hmmmm). I wonder what crooked, bisexual lawyer he could be talking about?
I was surprised how many words from the early 16th century describing corrupt religious practices:
"Bishop has put his foot in it" or "black as the bishop's foot" was written about by Tyndale (the irony!) anything burned, destroyed, wrecked or just the color "black" in general in reference to the burning of heretics.
There were several specific words for sexual partners being snuck into churches and monasteries in disguise: authem (which had several other meanings, less vulgar, more informal about things in the area around a church, also interestingly could be Yiddish in origin) and doxy, which was specifically a sex worker being snuck into church grounds.
"Winchester goose", was a venereal disease as far as I can tell, not a term for the prostitutes themselves, "goose" was a verb meaning to pinch or bite (still used this way) and Winchester was an area with a lot of sex workers. "He is recovering from a Winchester Goose." Also "goose" as a verb morphed into meaning anal intercourse in early 20th century U.S.
There was also: jarkman-a monk who uses their ability to write Latin to forge documents.
Patriarch: phony priest that performed illegal marriages.
Domerer: a monk that pretends to be deaf to get more alms.
legem pone: meant "money down" or an earnest payment, it comes from the first two words in one of the psalms that is associated with the first of the month or payday.
All of these were first printed in the early 16th century, though many were probably older.
It's also fun to see how many commonly used vulgarities are at least that old if not older: bitch, fuck, cunt, cock, cuck, faggot...
about the last one, I'd always heard it came from "faggot" the bundle of sticks used to light fires, since homosexuals would be heretics that are burned. This source disputes that and says that women and children were often derisively called faggots, because they were the ones that carried the bundle of sticks, so it became a term of abuse for homosexuals, as a way to link them with weakness and femininity. The earliest in print usage of the word to mean homosexual, came from WWI in the U.S.
"Bird" could be a woman or an effeminate man at this time, "nan boy" and molly also were effeminant men, a bit later in Shakespeare's time as well as Betty and the area of london associated with gay activity became: bettyland...
hey boy don't kill yourself. green's dictionary of slang is available online and allows you to explore 500 years of english vulgarity. you can search by part of speech, source, time period, etymology, and usage. there's a whole category for gay slang. they even have specific citations listed so you can see the exact context for yourself. boy did you know that in 1927 "to kneel at the altar" was slang for "to sodomize"

cw for the most longwinded and insane discussion of psuedocest and caleb and mcs relationship in lds.
MY THOUGHTS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE !!!!!!!!!!!!! but for now...
MAJOR CW FOR PSUEDOCEST AND SPOILERS FOR CALEB CARDS
like. not only is caleb being a siscon integral to his characterization - it also crucial to understanding what is actually going on in their dynamic because when you remove the familial context (and, in turn, remove calebs sole reason for being KJDSHJDS) none of the conflict of the story will feel meaningful or make any sense
calebs and mcs relationship is run of the mill traumatized sibling codependency. the amount and the extent in which the both of them emotionally rely on each other is reinforced in the myth where it affirms that caleb is basically fucking winter solider and that if mc had the chip in her she would end up with a similar obsession about protecting him.
but caleb has harbored a stronger desire for her since forever.
and MORE than that , i do not think his desire for her genuinely conflicts with his interest in acting as her older brother.
so much of the conflict caleb experiences is about wanting to maintain the image of protection and strength in order to make sure mc never feels completely out of depth and keep himself as a safe space in her life. he makes a promise in her bond as to not restrain her. his priority has always and will always be her family. acting as her dependable gege is something caleb goes to great lengths to do
this is proven again by their hidden waves card where he doesnt want mc to see him sick. he cant be sick, cant show weakness. because he wants her to continue to depend on him for as long as they are live. he wants to continue to be the person she relies on.
the distorted nature of their relationship exists because for calebs desire to monopolize mc and continue acting like her gege are not at odds INTERNALLY. rather, he is under the correct impression that expressing that to mc would alter her already fragile connection and feelings about family.
WHICH IS WHY THE CONVERSATION THEY HAVE IN THE MAIN STORY CAPTIVE BIRD - WHERE CALEB EXPLICITLY SAYS THAT IT WAS MCS MISTAKE TO THINK HE WOULD KEEP ACTING AS HER GOOD OLDER BROTHER IS SOOO DKJFHSJD !!!
thank you mao for the translations on that for affirming the psuedocest in it AND the tragedy in it.
based on all of that and the way i see it - i think the underlying sexual tension is probably something that has existed in their relationship for a long time. something that mc has probably felt but somewhat willfully chosen to overlook or acknowledge because of what it would mean . to what capacity she has understood it is imo still up for debate
TO ME........ i think this is about a willingness to the accept that distortion. the intentional cruelty in deying to mc that he was ever gege in the first place. i do think that this is of course partially because of his frustration over his feelings but also a way for him to make mc confront their relationship more head on. mc sees it a denial of their bond and i think this will require resolving at some point
but because i think caleb knows even better than mc that mc could accept A LOT from caleb simply because of who he is to her. but its not what he wants. he wants HER as she is. to have all of her.
to act as both. to be everything to her she is to him. in order to do that, i think he probably first intends to make mc conscious of him this way. forcefully because its the only way she'll really get it and come to him of her own volition and accept what has probably existed between them for a long time
i think this is also an act of mercy on calebs behalf. because i think it would genuinely be easy for him to get what he wants out of mc on the guise of acting as her brother only. i think it is knowing that he chooses not to do that and instead goes so forcefully in making her aware of him and his desires. i know that sounds insane but for now thats how i see it.
its a matter of caleb wanting to be both her gege and everything inbetween. above and below.
SORRY AND I AM INSANE .

a/n: i've had these ready for about a week or so but for some reason i haven't posted them? idk, but i do hope you enjoy heh i had fun.
warnings: none. this is pure fluff. | tagging: @wizzy21
❀ Nerd! Hanji who has been your close friend since the two of you were young. They were always a bit awkward and going around studying frogs or collecting rocks, but you were always following closely behind with a pencil sharpener and a box of band-aids.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who used to tutor you in their free time. Their favorite subjects had always been the most difficult ones: chemistry, physics and math. So they would always do everything in their power to make the subjects more interesting or, at the very least, easier for you to understand.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who has done your homework for you more times than you could count. Some times because you were sick, some because you were getting frustrated and aggravated and some of them in exchange for some of your baking. So they would sit on the kitchen counter as you would bake them cookies, cakes, whatever they were craving that day.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who has always been class president for as long as they were allowed to run. They were constantly trying their best to make sure everyone in class was happy and also having their concerns being heard. They ran unopposed for over five years, mainly because there was nobody else who could have done a better job than them.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who deletes all of their social media every time they have an exam coming up. No matter how many times you tell them that they could easily just delete the app, they will not listen to you because they say they're tempted to just "download it" again.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who has had a crush on you for years but never did anything about it. They wanted to ask you out for so long but didn't for two reasons. Number one is that they didn't think you felt the same way and, number two, because they wanted to wait until you both got to college and had an idea of what you were looking to do for the rest of your life.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who was the joke of the group multiple times but they still couldn't understand that they were being teased for your feelings about them, not the other way around.
❀ Nerd! Hanji Nerd hanji who excels in absolutely everything that they do but are completely oblivious to your feelings for them until you straight up kiss them after a day out together. You were already considering it a date, they thought the two of you were just hanging out before college started. They didn't complain one bit, though.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who doesn't pay attention to how they look, especially when you go out together. They will keep their hair in a messy ponytail, wear the same pair of old crocs and the same taped pair of broken glasses.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who gets you a scholarship to your dream college so the two of you can study together. They will change their entire life plan that they have had since they were a child just to spend time with you, much to their parents' dismay.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who constantly helps you study for your exams because they have absolutely nothing to worry about for themselves and they want you to achieve only the best you can.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who set the curve for the grades too high so they are lowkey disliked by most of their classmates. They don't really care though, the only person they care about is how you feel about them. And you love them to bits.
❀ Nerd! Hanji has an internship at a very prestigious laboratory and is already being considered for a full-time position by the time they graduate.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who constantly sends you pictures of funny looking bacteria they find. They find random shapes and immediately whip out their phone (which they are very much not allowed to do but they get so excited that they can't help it.)
❀ Nerd! Hanji who constantly needs to buy new pens and pencils because they are often biting the back of it or the cap. They have come home with blue or black ink on their lips more times than you can count on one hand.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who sometimes forgets to eat so you always bring them food regardless of where they are. They always blush and tell you not to trouble yourself with these kinds of things but you can't help it. Knowing that they are using all that brain power with no fuel makes your heart ache. So you always give them extra food and water.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who tilts their head when they are thinking about stuff. They do it regardless if they are at work or if they are at home. So you just know they could be looking for a bacteria in a sample or for the extra block of cheese in the back of the fridge, the look is the same.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who doodles your name all over their notepads over and over, to the point where they have to force themselves out of that mind space, otherwise they can't focus.
❀ Nerd! Hanji who looks at you and only you. No matter how old the two of you are, they are always in love with you. And they are always yapping about some video game or book, not that you mind, of course. You never did.

So, I came to find this post from a sorta weird inflection point. Skip to "And this is the crux" if you don't want my rambling prelude.
I'm looking at building a new D&D character, and decided I wanted to do something different from my usual "Warlock, bending the rules over my knee as much as possible" approach. I started by picking an archetype, or rather, an Archetype feat(1), specifically "Anti-Communist Machine" but refluffed to be pro-communist, cuz... I'm pro-communist and I don't like playing characters who are counter to my principles (and the feat doesn't actually rely in any way on a relation between ideologies). It requires you to play a construct.
That's cool. I started looking at construct races, and found one or two that are about being a construct that represents an idealized form of the creator's species, which led my AuDHD brain to think "Character that looks like "what if soviet propaganda, but by goblins. Or lizardfolk, or whatever." Which is a fun thought. I think, anyway.
It meant trying to research that particular artistic style, to get a feel for it, and therefore, how it might depict its subjects if it was made by a fantasy race.
The thing about Socialist Realism... well, there are two things. The first is that it is a reaction to and builds upon other artistic styles. The second is... well, there's a reason why Soviet and Nazi propaganda have similar visual aesthetic styles. Socialist Realism is, first and foremost, a Realism based style. Which I don't think is inherently a bad thing. Which is why I kinda just said "...um, ok, whatever" when I first saw explainslowly's response above and moved on.
But as I started sketching out "Socialist Realist Statue Goblin," I realized that... well, Socialist Realist Goblin would be incredibly generic. Like... that's sort of the point of socialist realism, or rather, the overarching term that encompasses both the Soviet and Nazi visual aesthetics, Heroic Realism. The idea being to present the artist('s sponsor)'s chosen demographic in an idealized, perfect, form. And the thing about "Perfect Forms" is that... if you diverge at all from the template, it's no longer the Perfect Form. Like, to take it out of direct political ideologies for a moment, if you decide that Arnold Schwarzenegger's body is the Ideal Perfect Form, then even a perfect replica who happens to be blond instead of brunette is no longer Perfect. By definition. So, Socialist/Heroic Realism Goblin would have to be The Platonic Ideal of a Goblin. Which means you have to figure out what goblins would see as their idealized form in light of their standards of beauty. But also, if you step away from "Muscular, thin, young, and chiseled" then it's no longer recognizable as Socialist Realism. Which means that you have to focus on the things that mark a goblin as visually distinct from a human. Which means leaning into, well, creating what would look like a an antisemitic caricature, except as done by someone who thought the antisemitic caricature was the ideal form. Which... is weird. A kind of an interesting thought exercise, but as a catholic-raised, considered-white-in-America, never-been-Jewish artist... it's not one I personally want to explore.
But, ok, so let's say you want to take the thoughts and ideas that gave rise to Heroic Realism, and then apply that to goblins. You still have to figure out what goblins would see as the physical ideal, and what they would see as "degenerate/bourgeois."
And this is the crux.
While the Soviets did not frame things as "degenerate," their artistic ideas come from the same place as Hitler, the idea that anything which strays from visual realism is bad and harmful to society, except that realism must always depict the decreed perfect form. It is the idea that impressionism is evidence of a diseased visual cortex. It is the idea that only someone who is physically and mentally degenerate could produce art that isn't the decreed style.
I don't necessarily think the Chobani ad is trying to do this kind of propaganda. It's more focused on "a sustainable, ecofriendly future includes our products." Which is of course a laughable and in its own way bad thing to peddle. That said, I think realism is perfectly fine as an artistic style. But I get why explainslowly sees the ad and its artistic style, whether with the corporate elements, or those elements removed, is promoting a pernicious ideology beyond "buy our stuff." It's leaning into artistic tropes which have been used to that pernicious end in the past.
...which... I guess is the same problem some people have with goblins. Huh.

Katie slides the bottle towards him. “Drink up, kid. The rations don't carry over.”
Buck happily obliges. They drink in companionable quiet for a while, Katie occasionally providing commentary on the people coming and going or doing the rounds, telling Buck who they are, how long they've been coming to the Ice, pointing out the winterovers and the ones with interesting stories.
They're watching two pilots (“That's Hisham, helo pilot, third timer. Girlfriend's a kiwi, she's at Scott base. Other fella's one of the Canadians with Ken-Borek. Loïc, think it was. Fixed wing pilot. They tend not to get along.”) get into an argument that both men seem too tired to actually escalate, when Buck speaks up.
“Katie, have you ever been in love?”
She dangles her bottle from between her finger tips, eyes still on the argument unfolding. “Sure.”
He props his head up on his hand to look at her. “What happened?”
Katie levels her steely gaze at him but something she sees makes her soften a little. Shrugs. “She ran off to go study insular dwarfism in Madagascan chameleons. Left me behind.”
Buck's eyebrows raise along with the corners of his mouth. “Oh. S-so you're--”
She nods, taps her bottle against his. Leans in and mock-whispers, “There's more of us than y'think, kid. Even out here.” Considers it. “Perhaps especially out here. The Ice tends to attracts people like us.”
Buck watches her take a swig of her drink and lets the words sink in. “Wait, what do you mean, 'people like us?'”
Her pale eyebrows inch towards the edge of her bandana. “What do you think I mean, Buckley?” She gestures at herself. “The gays, the dykes, the-- whatever you are. You know. The queers.”
“Oh.” Something uncomfortable twists in his gut. “I-I'm not--”
Katie leans back, genuine surprise written across her face. “Well I'm sorry, kid. I could'a sworn last night you spent all of three beers waxing poetic about your helo guy.”
Buck makes a face. “W-well. He-- he's not my... but--”
“You're in love with this man, yeah?”
And he can't help the lovestruck smile that's tugging at the corners of his mouth, dips his head. “Yeah.”
“And you're a guy.”
“Uh, o-obviously.”
“So you're...” she gestures and Buck realizes he's supposed to finish the sentence. He shifts in his seat, discomfort gnawing at him.
“Yeah, I, uh. Yes, I-I guess that would make me...” he trails off, looks at her pleadingly, not sure if he wants her to give him all the answers or just drop the subject entirely.
“So, what, are you homophobic?”
Katie's raspy voice still carries, and Buck casts a panicked glance around the bar. Thankfully, no one seems to have heard her. Or they're really good at hiding it. “No! No. No, of-- of course not. I-I'm... I've always been an ally.”
She raises her eyebrows. “An ally who's in love with a man but can't even say out loud that he's... what? Gay? Bi?”
He gives her a desperate look from where he has his face practically pressed against the tabletop. “Right? I-I should know, shouldn't I? How-- How can I-I not know?”
He's whining. That was definitely a whine.
As if by some miracle, Katie looks less unimpressed with him than she usually does, which doesn't say a whole lot, especially considering the fact that she's not even looking at him right now. She's staring off into space as she takes a long swig from her bottle. When she speaks, her voice is uncharacteristically gentle.
“You came all the way out here to follow the guy you're in love with,” she says, slowly, as if trying to explain something to a particularly dense but, arguably, loved child. Then she sighs, puts a calloused hand on his. “Look, kid, you don't need to choose from a whole bunch of labels. Hell, the only labels I knew 'til well into my thirties was dykes and fags.” And Buck tries not to flinch, but she clocks him anyway if the roll of her eyes is anything to go by.
She pats his hand. “You don't need any labels at all if y'don't want them. God knows they probably never think about it.” She gestures at the other bar patrons with her bottle. “But there's not needing a label, and there's bein' ashamed of what that label means, and a lot of us older folk used the former as an excuse for the latter for a long time. Claiming that label means something to us. It doesn't have to, for you, but if your guy spent any time in the closet, it might mean a whole lot to him.”
Buck takes a moment for the words to sink in. “What, so he thinks I'm... ashamed of my feelings for him?”
She pats his hand twice more before removing hers and leaning back. “Hell if I know, I'm not a mind reader.”

I have a lifelong hypnokink but for years and years I completely hid it and only engaged through checking the what's new page on the mcstories.com every week and other forms of porn. I have been slowly opening up about it over the last few years and reached out to other people who are into it and I also now have an interested and supportive partner who is starting to explore hypnotic play with me.
I am at the point where I talk pretty openly and earnestly about this with them now (I used to have to really veil it in layers of detached irony and jokes) and we have engaged in roleplay around it which has been very fun, but when we try to engage in actual hypnotic sessions where they try to hypnotise me (even nonsexually) I get these massive waves of shame bubbling up and start crying.
There's a lot of tangled feelings and I don't know how to separate them all out. At least part of it is just feeling ridiculous and stupid for wanting this. And also that I am making them do something weird and awful and gross. This is mixed up with feelings about my own performance as a subject—I am in my own head a lot and constantly second guessing what I'm doing and experiencing and find it difficult to know how to engage with hypnotic suggestions.
The first time we tried I broke down into a sobbing mess before we even started. It has been getting better and my partner has been incredibly sweet and supportive and helped me feel very safe as we make progress on this, but they are also pretty new to all this and I was wondering if you had any advice or insight that might help?
Hi there Anon, I am answering this question on voice to text because it really touched my heart and I wanted to get to it and give it attention right away even though my hands are still pretty busted and it's been a long day. so please excuse any typos or weird homophonic errors.
like you, I was consumed with shame about my hypnosis fetish for a very long time. I knew since I was a very young child that hypnosis called to me, and fantasized about it in a deeply sexual way from very young, but I never said a word about it to another person until my late twenties. and even then it was a pretty fleeting, glancing thing. I found it a lot easier to play online with remote partners than to tell someone that I was in a intimate real-life relationship with. I also retreated into fantasy a lot, never believing that it would be possible for me to share in the kink with another person in a genuine way.
eventually I did meet some really wonderful play partners and Doms who helped me to realize I wasn't alone in harboring this fetish, and really populated my inner world and mental architecture to make me a better subject who was more capable of experiencing pleasure and transformation in hypnosis. but without that good fortune and their mentorship I don't know where I'd be.
One thing that I would recommend to you is locating the hypnosis fetish community and plugging yourself and your partner into it a bit more. there are both in person and digital conferences throughout the world for hypnosis fetishists. The kink's stock is up in a major way, especially thanks to the widespread popularity of pup play and bimbo play that incorporates hypnotic elements. if you are in a major city or on one of the American coasts, there are hypnosis oriented events and groups available to you. I even know of hypnosis fetish groups in relatively small towns like Winnipeg that are thriving and filled with other people.
I think both you and your partner will learn a lot technically about enjoying hypnosis scenes well, and that you'll rid yourself of a lot more of your remaining shame if you can take in some of their resources and really be in community with people who get this desire. hypnosis is a skill that requires a lot of time to develop, and there's really no ceiling to the amount of skill a person can get in it. both being a hypnotist and a subject are really intensive discrete skills, and knowing other people who are honing those skills will really help you and impart you some tips and tricks that could really spare you a lot of pain and give you some new ideas for how to have fun together.
as for the shame and crying freak outs that you are experiencing, it sounds like you are having an abreaction, which is a pretty common form of emotional spillage following an intense hypnotic event. these reactions can happen when we get triggered or a nerve gets struck, but also sometimes they emerge just because we've really plunged into emotional depths or a dark headspace and our brain is freaked out by it and trying to draw us back up.
letting a person into your mind is really intimate and revealing, and when you are embarrassed or ashamed of even wanting that degree of revealment, there are a lot of emotional explosions that can occur. continue to move through this and process it with your partner. if they are enjoying exploring this kink with you, they probably find a lot of value in getting to explore your mind and learn how you react to things, and a lot of intimacy can be built through examining strong reactions and processing freak outs together.
I know that it is hard to believe, but you are not inconveniencing your partner, or putting them out, or failing to make the most of their supposed generosity by not always having an easy and an enthusiastic response to them engaging in hypnosis play with you. these disturbed intense reactions are part of the work, and potentially it can take you to new places together, if you let it.
I think you should probably also continue to explore your own hypnotic capacity on your own, watching spirals, listening to hypnotic audio files, meditating, writing mantras in a notebook or on a website such as Write for Me, and learning carefully how to bring yourself down into a trance, as well as how to bring yourself out. if you haven't yet, you and your partner should read books on hypnotic techniques and safeties; Mark Wiseman and sleepinggirl's books are probably the best place to start.
One of the things I was really fortunate to experience early on was having a Dom who installed safeties into my mind that force me to articulate when I am feeling unsafe and bring myself out of a trance automatically regardless of whatever the hypnotist is doing or if there's even another person there. I really believe that every hypnotic subject should have these kinds of safeties put in place early on and have them reinforced regularly so that they are ultimately able to pull the rip cord on any suggestion or mental state that is damaging to them.
beyond that, I'd say just keep working at it. if anything, these strong emotions that you're having are a demonstration of how powerful and significant this kind of stuff can be. hypnosis is heady fucking stuff. and that's part of what's so hot and enchanting about it. this stuff is real. it's a level of profound control and knowledge that you're giving over to a partner when you do this stuff, and that alone can be incredibly rewarding to them, even if they didn't have a hypnosis kink before they met you. what you are doing is not silly or disgusting, nor is it a waste of a partner's time. It is a beautiful, really really intimate gift. really. a lot of new people have gotten into hypnosis in the last few years because it is such a flexible and vulnerable kink that really pushes a lot of sexual and emotional buttons. any partner who shares in this activity with you is lucky to get to do so, you have nothing to apologize for or feel ashamed about. I hope you have a really enriching time with this. this is a very special part of you and a very special way to connect. I hope you can enjoy it for all that it is, even in its darker and scarier moments.

Armand nuzzled in, trying not to think about all the little moments of falling in love. When she held his hand, when she called him her friend. Just her talking to him like he was a person despite having every reason in the world to treat him like a monster.
He'd read her mind. He saw the fear she had of him and felt the pain she was in, but she called him out anyway. Expected something from him beyond the cold self-interest he was prepared to wallow in. He had no decent argument against it. No resolve that withstood her sense of moral outrage at his behavior. Her clear sense that something good could be done in the wake of tragedy.
And when he flew off with her, arguing and sulking all the way, he felt a sense of purpose and the tiniest sliver of pride. Her gratitude, however small, overwhelmed him. Left him wanting more.
Before he met her, he was so ready to disappear again. To once more blend into the shadows and become nothing and no one. With all he'd suffered and lost, could anyone blame him for giving up?
She sent him after that man. And the man led him to that girl. In his own small way, he changed the world for the better, all because Mina wouldn't let him disappear-.
Change of subject. So he didn't start crying again.
"That man... Liam... he was so troubled. In ways he could never tell. Some he didn't even know. It was as if his whole life was spent on the scales, always coming up short against impossible weight."
Mina tried to think of when exactly she fell in love with him and then got embarrassed when he pointed out his udity, “Well no. But it doesn’t hurt to look. I may have peaked sometimes.”
And then she got overwhelmed and went to hide under the covers for a moment, “I don’t know when it was. I think I felt something when we saved that girl. But….maybe it really started for me when I told you about the vampire kids. And you comforted me and you didn’t look at me any differently. I’ve told others before…they always tell me I had no choice. Then they always look at me differently but you didn’t. I think that’s when it started. Looking back I think that’s when I realized you saw ME and that you were different.”

Let's talk about the Art Deco in Transformers One.
Me, a 23-year-old Visual Arts student going into my 7th semester, thought it'd be cool to share this artistic and cultural curiosity present in the movie.
(Some music to vibe the content hehehe)
According to the movie director, Josh Cooley (click here to watch), Iacon city was built inspired by Art Deco and it is like a robot style!
But first of all: What is Art Deco?
The term “Art Deco” comes from the French term “Arts Décoratifs” which means Decorative Arts.
It was a popular design movement that emerged in the 1920s and flourished until the 1930s, in France. It influenced various art forms, including architecture, interior design, fashion, painting, sculpture, and graphic arts.
The starting point was the “International Exhibition of Decorative and Industrial Arts”, which took place in Paris in 1925. Initially, Art Deco was an art form aimed at the post-war bourgeoisie, using expensive materials.
However, with the Art Deco Exhibition held in New York in 1934, this style became popular throughout the world.
What are its characteristics?
Art Deco heavily utilized geometric shapes like chevrons, zigzags, and stylized sunbursts. These shapes were often used to create intricate patterns and designs. It also embraced luxurious materials such as chrome, stainless steel, and exotic woods. These materials were used to create a sense of opulence and sophistication.
Bold Colors: It featured bold and vibrant colors, often used in contrasting combinations. Gold, silver, and black were also popular choices.
Streamlined Forms: often featured streamlined forms, inspired by the machine age and the concept of speed and efficiency.
Exotic Influences: Art Deco drew inspiration from various cultures, including ancient Egypt, Aztec, and Mayan civilizations. These influences can be seen in the use of stylized motifs and patterns.
But how Art Deco is represented in the movie?
It was "estrategically-acidentally" chosen for both architecture and history. As mentioned above, the gold, gray and black are the main colours for this kind of art. They convey richness, power, cleanliness (the primes are seen by cybertronians this way just as Egyptian royalty was seen by their subjects, for example).
So. I have brought some examples of the Art Deco pattern:
You can see them here, for example:
Now, let's check the architecture out.
If you look closely, these buildings are very similar to Iacon's:
Images from Jason Scheier (Production Designer) on Instagram.
This entrance hall in one of the New York City skyscrapers (for example) has the same interior design as the main room in the Iacon Golden Tower. The luxury liners showcase elegance, richness and sophistication of Art Deco.
How it is shown in the movie:
Also, did you know that Art Deco tell stories through murals? Amazing, itsn't it? It is also shown in the movie!
Examples:
In the movie:
There is one more mural in the main room in the Iacon Golden Tower, but we can barely see it.
☆☆☆☆☆
Well, there's a whole study behind it. I didn't want to bring it all to not let this post be huge. I just wanted to share a cool curiosity coming from who are studying art for a long time. I advise you to search for more if you got interested. 😊
I think this is enough. Hope you have enjoyed it and thank you for your attention! 🫶
Reminder: everything I've shown you is from my own studies!

Some aspects I noticed in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies mode about Russell Adler & funny things
His relationship with pleasure Adler isn’t someone who simply “enjoys” something; he experiences it intensely. He doesn’t do anything halfway. He likes control, but also power over others’ sensations. He hides what he truly feels, but when something shakes him, his reaction is almost visceral. He’s methodical, but when something consumes him, he can lose himself in it. We can talk about a “hidden hedonism.” I mean, Adler isn’t just a rough and cold man. Quite the opposite. He’s someone who feels deeply but constantly represses it because he doesn’t want others to see him as vulnerable. That’s why, when he lets go, his intensity is stronger than normal. The way he enjoys sensory things in an almost exaggerated way… all of this reveals that he experiences pleasure more deeply than he admits. We can already see a mix of masculine ego, a need for validation, and a primal side he tries to control.
The fixation on capitalism as sensual pleasure
"The sweet, sweet aroma of capitalism…"
"You put in money, spit out firepower, and that’s the American way." Here, money and power intertwine with physical pleasure. Adler literally enjoys capitalism as if it were a sensory experience… and the way he says it makes it sound almost like a fetish. Freudian conclusion: Adler finds in capitalism a source of satisfaction that borders on the erotic. A substitute for another kind of gratification? Possibly.
Dominance and control over others
"Did I give you permission to look at me?"
"You and I have work to do" (when turning a zombie into an ally, i.e., subjecting it to his will).
"Do you mind if I call you Tinker Bell?" (A condescending reference to Bell). Here, we see his need for absolute control. The way he says, "Did I give you permission to look at me?" isn’t just a dismissive phrase but a statement of hierarchy and dominance. Freudian conclusion: Adler has a clear tendency to enjoy control over others. This aligns with his ENTJ profile as a natural leader but also with certain dominance traits that could apply in more… intimate areas.
Relationship with rage and aggression
"Rage will only take you so far, and I should know."
"Carnage is my middle name."
"It was you or me, and I’ve already decided." The way he talks about rage, violence, and survival suggests that he sees aggression as a fundamental part of his identity. This is very interesting because in Cold War, we’re already shown that Adler represses a lot and uses anger as fuel. Freudian conclusion: Adler doesn’t just see violence as a means but as part of his psychological structure. Possible war trauma + emotional repression + ENTJ with a need for control = aggression channeled into his identity.
The strange pleasure in the physical/sensory
"Mmmh… tastes like broth."
"I think it even strengthened my hair."
"Ah, that’s a good kick." Some lines have an exaggerated tone of physical enjoyment. He gets overly excited about the side effects of things, as if everything he experiences with his body gives him pleasure beyond the norm. Freudian conclusion: There’s a subtext that Adler experiences pleasure more intensely than he’d admit, which could reveal that deep down, he has a hedonistic side hidden behind his tough-guy facade.
What would this mean in private? When Adler is in a situation of real intimacy, the subtext is clear: His coldness breaks, but not completely. He’s still calculating, still analyzing, but there are moments when his self-control shatters entirely. He’s not used to being with someone who disarms him. He’s used to having power, but when something or someone touches him in the right way, that power turns into pure intensity. He doesn’t admit what he feels, but his body betrays him. He wouldn’t say, "I need you," but his gaze, his breathing, the tension in his jaw—all of that would give him away. In summary: Adler enjoys, but he doesn’t want to admit how much he enjoys. And when he does, it’s with a level of intensity that’s almost dangerous.
In conclusion: Adler’s lines in Zombies are 100% him, but they also reveal some nuances that could be analyzed from a Freudian perspective: ✅ Overcompensation with big guns → Latent insecurity about his virility. ✅ Fascination with capitalism and power → Almost sensual pleasure in dominance and accumulation. ✅ Need for absolute control → Enjoyment of leadership and domination. ✅ Violence as identity → Channeling of trauma and repressed aggression. ✅ Exaggerated physical pleasure → Possible hidden hedonism. So yes, Adler has a lot of interesting subtexts behind his lines, and some of them can be read in hilariously Freudian ways.
Or is it just that for him, there’s never enough testosterone to spare, and he always feels he needs to be more masculine? Ultimately, Adler’s lines in Zombies mode that reference “testosterone” shouldn’t be taken literally but as a manifestation of his deeper insecurities about his masculine identity. Adler isn’t just trying to demonstrate physical power; he’s also dealing with his constant need to be more than he feels he is. His concern with being “masculine enough” reflects the tensions of a man living under the pressure of meeting extremely high expectations, both from himself and others. It’s important to consider that, while Adler is 54, insecurities related to body image and masculinity don’t disappear with age; in fact, in many cases, they tend to intensify as men grow older and feel the need to reaffirm their virility in more intense ways. The mix of arrogance, insecurity, and need for validation in his comments is nothing more than a reflection of these internal tensions, and it’s in his relationships with others, like younger and less experienced characters, that these insecurities become more evident and, at times, more amusing.

Algunos aspectos que noté en el modo zombies de call of duty black ops 6 sobre Russell Adler
1. Su relación con el placer
Adler no es alguien que simplemente “disfruta” algo, él lo experimenta con intensidad. No hace nada a medias.
(Referencia a Bell, casi condescendiente).
5. El placer extraño por lo físico/sensorial
"Mmmh... sabe a caldo."

I was just thinking how would the Ro's deal with a Mc who believes in all the witch stuff and practices it. Like with all the crystals and tarot cards.
Ooooh I love this question!! Answers under the cut <3
Beck- totally neutral feelings. He doesn't really believe in magic, but he also doesn't write it off, either. He'd jokingly claim that he keeps his options open. As such, he'd treat a MC who practices witchcraft pretty much the same way he'd treat one who doesn't.
Croft- is deeply immersed in the occult, themself, and while that's not exactly the same thing they're similar enough that Croft fully would respect MC's beliefs and finds them interesting. Also they are 100% deeeep into tarot. They probably have a really lovely collection of decks.
Jay- would be the most uncomfortable with it. They were raised Catholic, and they have a huuuge mistrust of magic and the supernatural. Due to, you know. Their-Dad-Got-Disappeared reasons. But they also would understand that it's different and would try to adjust their perceptions.
Perri- they'd think it's cool and want to learn more, hands down. They're not the most spiritual person in the world, but they'd be very supportive and eager about it...though tarot specifically would make them a bit uneasy. They don't love the idea of knowing the future.
Ravi- neutral to positive. He's also very into the occult and used to be way more into witch-y sort of stuff when he was a teenager. While he isn't as into it now, he's still deeply interested in magic. He'd enjoy being able to bond over it a bit, and would be very supportive!
Yasmin- she'd also be fairly neutral on the subject, though she might struggle with validating MC's beliefs, since she doesn't really believe in any kind of magic/the supernatural at this point. She'd do her best to be supportive, but finds it all a little hard to truly believe in. Once she finds out about the fog, though? She'd be much more open-minded.

Subject: Re: Extension Request
Hi Madi,
I had your sister in my class two years ago. Samantha O'Reilly was sharp, determined, and never backed down when she knew she was right. She believed in Gotham and its ability to get better in a way that, frankly, inspired me. I remember helping her with her essay for college applications, and I knew then if anybody was going to revolutionize Gotham's healthcare, it was her.
It hurts to hear that she's gone missing. But I do not believe that Scarecrow has the power to change her, to take away who she really is. She may be manipulated, she may be roped into his schemes, but she isn't lost, my dear. She is in trouble. And those are not the same thing.
She needs us to believe in her more than ever. And I need you to have faith in yourself, too.
Take the extension. Take all the time you need to cope and focus. If doing schoolwork gives you something steady to hold onto, then do what you need to do. But by no means think that you need to prove something by burning yourself out, Madi. You are brilliant and dedicated, and you don't need me or my opinions to know that. Your well-being comes first.
If Scarecrow is recruiting, then he is expanding, and I need you and your family to stay far away from his radar at all times. Keep your routines unpredictable and your location private. Stay with people you trust and be wary of anybody new who take an interest in you. If anything ever feels off — strangers watching you, cryptic messages, odd delivers, friends going missing — let me know immediately.
Scarecrow preys on fear, but he cannot really destroy you, Sam, or anybody else in this city. Not in a way that matters, as long as we remain steadfast even in our nightmares and our uncertainty. I understand how helpless this feels, and I don't have the right to tell you not to feel that way. The trajectory of your lives may have changed irreversibly, and things might not be the same.
But what I will tell you is that the love you have for Samantha is far more powerful than whatever Scarecrow throws in her way. Don't give up on your sister, Madi.
And do not, even for one second, think you are alone in this: you are not. Sam has people looking out for her, you have people looking out for you. You have me in your corner, by your side, always.
So, do not hesitate to reach out for anything. I mean that, Madison. Take care of yourself.
All my love,
Helena
Huntress doesn't care that that by now Scarecrow is intimately familiar with what makes her tick, what makes her crack, what makes her falter. She doesn't care how fortified his lair is; numerous lackeys ready to launch into bloodshed in an instant, the air reeking with gases and chemicals threatening to send Huntress spiralling down, breaking down, hesitating. She doesn't hesitate. Helena's spent weeks tearing through Scarecrow's operations — destroying labs, cutting off supply chains, thinking she was making a dent. And still, here they are. Another name added to the list of Gotham's stolen, neglected, forgotten. Another bright mind warped into something ugly. All that Huntress cares about right now is getting Sam out of there and back home in one piece, alive and breathing. She doesn't care if Madison's sister is already brainwashed beyond recognition, if she might resist at every step of the way out. That's a problem for later — for Oracle, for Batman, for Zatanna, for anybody to undo. Huntress' job is extraction. Making sure there's someone still left to save. Huntress doesn't care how deep into the darkness Scarecrow has dragged Samantha. She's pulling her out.

Subject: Re: Interview With The CatWoman
Hi Ananya,
Well, of course, you would be the one to track down Catwoman and persuade her to do an interview. I'm not all surprised, and I am perhaps a teensy tiny bit impressed.
I must admit, this is not what I was expecting. And I do hope you're staying safe, young lady, I'm not thrilled that you got that close to such a volatile situation. But I understand how these things unfold.
That being said, you showed great initiative and quick thinking. You saw someone who made a real, tangible impact on your surroundings, and you found an unconventional yet necessary perspective into your work. That is the heart of analysis and good storytelling.
No signature? No problem. I'm obviously not going to ask you to chase down her just for an autograph and risk getting clawed. And let's be honest, Ms Catwoman doesn't strike me as someone who enjoys leaving paper trail behind. Some people let their actions speak for them.
And that’s the thing, isn't it? The point of this assignment isn't to necessarily scout out a well-known superhero, but to find someone who makes a difference, someone who helps out. You don't need a badge, a title, or anybody's permission to do the right thing — you just do it.
Your interview was solid, and I’ve given you a good grade. Take a look at my feedback in the attached scan when you get the chance, though — there are a few areas that could use some refining. You’ve got a great story here, kid. Let’s make sure it's told right.
Nice work. Stay safe.
Best,
Miss Bertinelli
[ Attachment: I_Interview_Catwoman_scan.pdf ]
The fire escape isn't the most comfortable perch, but it gives her a decent vantage point. And it's a good enough spot to read Ananya's work thoroughly, annotate, and get a glimpse of a side of Selina Kyle that Huntress doesn't see much. The side that steps in, the side that doesn't let drug dealers get away with thinking they can take advantage of young minds, the side that answers a bubbly, young teenager's questions with warmth, charisma, and a signature flair that's uniquely, intriguingly hers. The side that gives a damn. Catwoman is nothing less of a wild card, but Selina has a good head on her shoulders — draws lines that she doesn't like to see get crossed. The Cat always lands on her feet, and tonight, Huntress wonders if she'll land on the right side. If she'll give another damn and show up. Catwoman isn't anybody's idea of a hero in the traditional sense. But again, neither is Huntress. Selina knows the darkness that prevails on the broken, vulnerable streets of this city; all-consuming and never forgiving. Helena knows that darkness too. The kind of darkness that chews up and spits out anybody into a hollow husk of their selves. The kind of darkness they both refuse to be caged by any longer. The kind of darkness they won't let engulf innocent kids anymore. Huntress hopes—prays for Sam's sake that Selina will hear her out. And extend that listening ear to Pamela, whose brilliance rivals that of Crane's. His brainwashing isn't impossible to tackle, but it spreads rapidly throughout the nervous system. Ivy might know how to reign those in before it's too late. And Catwoman might be able to convince her to step in. And maybe — just maybe, if Helena's prayers are heard, Selina might just know the darkness well enough to predict where Gotham's missing kids go when the rest of the city falls asleep. It's a long shot. But long shots are all Huntress has.

Subject: Re: pokodot man stole my shirts and i have nothing to wear for the trip :(
Hi Ken,
Are you and your mom safe? That's my main concern.
That being said — seriously, Ken? Polka-dot shirts?
I'll be honest, this is a first, even for Gotham. This city truly never runs out of weird. I have no issue excusing the class trip, but I will need more details before I write "Absence due to polka-dot-related crimes" in the attendance log. Please ask your mother to call me when she has a moment and we'll sort it out.
Best,
Miss Bertinelli
Seriously, the Polka-Dot Man? Scrounging the local laundromat and looting some kid's shirts that won't even fit him? The mental image alone should've made her laugh. Gotham's walking eyesore, some washed-up D-list villain, shifting through other people's laundry baskets — and possibly the bargain bins at joke shops for a suit upgrade. But Huntress didn't. Not a lot of jokes were really that funny in Gotham. They tended to die and rot out in your mouth before you could spit them out. There was the simple set-up:
Some ridiculously, mind-numbingly, garnish gimmicks and corny costumes that'd even make a two-year-old roll their eyes. And then there was the punchline:
The bloodbath that spilled all over for rogues to lap, the homes that were left in ruins. Or a laundromat, in this case. A flick of Abner’s wrist sent a cluster of neon dots whirling through the air, and Huntress barely dodged in time — one of them piercing straight into a dryer, causing it to blow up on impact. The polka dots weren't really just a bad fashion statement. They were weaponised — hot, colourful, searing disks flung at her with deadly precision, sizzling against the concrete like dying stars when they missed. The next one sliced through her thigh, drawing blood with a burning tenacity. Yeah, she wasn't laughing. And Huntress didn't think for even one second that Abner Krill was just dillydallying at laundromats, but she wasn't going to stroke his ego either. "The Suicide Squad kick you to the curb or something?" She taunted, as she dodged a buzzsaw dot and rolled behind a vending machine. "Didn't think you were shaking down dryers for spare quarters now!" A beat of silence after that — the dots have come to a halt. A pause long enough for her to peek out. For him to give her a smile. "You think this is about the laundry, Huntress?" Abner stood there, casually twirling a glowing dot between his fingers. "You think this is all I'm doing? You don't think I'm capable of anything greater?" Abner laughed a loud, joyless laugh. "You're just like my mom, Huntress." "Gross, dude," Helena shot back, swiftly placing a bolt in her crossbow. "Why? Mothers are like bridges, you know..." His smile broadened, but never reached his eyes. "People trust them without question." His smile fell. He flicked his wrist — And she fired, and — The dot and the bolt met in a thunderous crash. In the back of her head, she wondered if his quip was just some dumb, random, stupid inside joke she wasn't supposed to get, and — Huntress really wished she didn't.

Subject: Re: ...
Hello Malik,
I need you to listen to me very carefully. Thank you for trusting me. I know this is a scary situation to be in, but you did the right thing by letting me know.
I want you and your dad to stay safe. If you have family somewhere else, consider staying with them for a while. Otherwise, I can send you a list of trustworthy places you'll be safe — shelters, community centers, mosques.
Be selective in whom you trust at this time. Trust your judgement. Keep your head down, avoid drawing attention, and if you notice anything suspicious, don’t try to check it out on your own. Just leave, get somewhere safe, and call for help. You're doing the best you can already.
And listen, kid — whenever you feel like you’re out of options, whenever you want to shout into the void, whenever you think no one's listening? I'm here to hear you. You can always tell me anything. Everything you say will stay between us. If you're worried about your dad knowing, I won't say a word to him.
I'm very sorry the police aren't taking this seriously. But I believe you, Malik. And I know some people who will believe you too. We will figure something out together.
We will keep our city safe. And that starts by keeping ourselves safe.
Okay?
Stay in touch.
With love and prayers,
Miss Bertinelli
Her heart aches. God. Good God, why — why is she the only adult that Malik can trust? That's — that's not right! Malik doesn't know that his teacher wields a weapon uglier than a pen. Malik doesn't know that her face is slick with blood — blood that's not hers. Malik doesn't know the ugly things she does in the nighttime to secure a brighter morning for other people. But Malik has faith. He trusts that Miss Bertinelli with that information, he trusts her — a schoolteacher — to do something about a citywide threat. This isn't a fight she can win on her own. So, mirroring that trust, she casts the net wide, spreading his warning like wildfire and hoping it reaches the right people — enough people. Oracle's Birds, the Bat's brats, the few independents that don't answer to Batman, and hell, even a handful of rogues that hate Joker more than they hate Huntress. Anybody outside of Gotham willing to cross the distance just to get their punches in. Some of her allies are still en-route, others have already started petty brawls in proximity, few are monitoring the area, some are waiting for the right moment to strike. But her gaze is locked on the bridge: it's still in one place. Blood rings in her head and burns in her eyes. The bridge isn’t just that — it's a crucial artery of Gotham. One wrong move, one wrong incision, and — And it won’t just fall. It’ll crush. Families. Homes. Futures. A graveyard that symbolises their failure to protect Gotham's innocent, effectively punishing these people for not being able to afford to live elsewhere. That caked-faced bastard picked his target well. Damn him, damn him, damn— Tears sting her eyes. She doesn't know if she can do this. She doesn't know if her allies of the night can save the day in time. She doesn't know if the bridge will stay intact. She doesn't know if they'll prevent casualties. She doesn't know how it ends tonight, and what happens tomorrow. (But Huntress has faith.) Something cold and solid brushes against her boot, snaps her out. She looks down and picks it up. A crowbar. Her grip tightens. The last time one of these was in the wrong hand, a young child died screaming. As if life means nothing. He took an innocent life — as he always did, destroying lives beyond repair, beyond redemption, beyond reprieve. (Never again.) And tonight, he has set out to claim thousands of lives, millions more in collateral damage. But that won't happen. No. No more families torn apart. No more children left in despair. No more bodies will be piled up at his feet. Because it won't be the damn bridge that falls.
(Never again.) Because Huntress has faith. She touches the cross at her throat, and remembers she is here. (NEVER AGAIN.) She brings the crowbar down — breaking the metal and a lackey's bone simultaneously. Reloads her crossbow. Marches ahead. Beside her, movement. More figures joining the fight. Allies, reluctant or otherwise. Capes, good and bad alike, drawn to this fight like vultures, like wolves, like something holy. She doesn't stop to look back. "Let's finish this."

Subject: Re: Library Suggestions
Hi Eden,
You're smart to trust your gut. If something smells fishy, it's probably not for no reason.
Here are some safer options:
• Hemingway Community Library: Well-lit, quiet, good security. It's run by the volunteers in the neighborhood, so the staff actually care.
• Eastpoint Library: This one's near your aunt's workplace. Might make pickups easier. Oh, and Sol Azteca is close by — you two should stop there for the carnitas tacos. Best in Gotham.
• Gotham City Public Library: Not super close, but it’s just one bus stop away. A friend of mine works there, Dr Gordon. She’s nicer than she looks — if you need anything, you can always approach her.
• The Woolf & Austen Bookshop: My personal pick? This bookstore on 5th and Wilburn. Good coffee, quiet atmosphere. I drop by there a lot. A little farther out from the school, but it's near my apartment. I don't do any grading here, I promise.
• If none of those work for you, let me know. I’ll help you figure something out.
And don't apologize for reaching out. You deserve safe spaces. Always.
Take care,
Miss B
Huntress follows her own gut, too. She steps into the library and immediately smells it: Not old books, not dust, not coffee — chemical rot, dense in the air. It’s a lab. A drug operation. Of fucking course. The same bastards who occupied Miriam's apartment basement have moved their operations here. The same ones Selina stopped from selling drugs to kids. Gotham’s rogues aren’t criminal masterminds. They’re roaches. The kind that refuse to die, that scurry to a new corner when the light exposes them. The kind that don’t learn their lesson until their heads have been shoved into a bookshelf hard enough to make them beg for a third chance. Unfortunately — or otherwise — Miss B doesn't know how to quit either.
one of helena bertinelli's students emailing her at 12:59 am asking if it's too late to submit their assignment now since their house got burned down due to gotham incidents:

i know you're getting a lot of asks recently, so feel free to ignore this, but I'm really curious on your thoughts on why Dorym (a ship where both characters were separated for most of the campaign) works and Imodna (a ship where the characters have actually interacted for hundreds of hours) doesn't. to be very clear, I agree with this assessment, but I haven't been able to articulate why. I did my best to search your blog, but I couldn't find any dorym meta you've written before- if you have, and I missed it, I'd love to be linked to it!
It feels like there are two separate parts to this so:
If I wrote Dorym meta it would be tagged Dorym. Off the top of my head I don't think I have; I enjoy Dorym but to be blunt this campaign and the character relationships within it, even the ones I enjoy, are insufficiently deep enough for meta. A lot of meta writers scaled back due to harassment, but also a lot of us have scaled back because there's not like, a lot to write about other than why the campaign isn't working.
In a hilarious twist of irony for the Number Bigger Means Ship More Good crowd, the main reason I think Dorym works is because they were separated for the majority of the campaign, and have had a number of meaningful conversations in both EXU Prime and after Dorian's return as well as nods to a sense of interest while they were split up, particularly on Orym's side (unsurprising as Liam is main cast and Orym has had much more time onscreen). The amount of time Imo/dna has had has actually worked against them, because they're physically present all the time and have known each other for two years prior and at no point does it ever feel like this is true. As a result, Dorian and Orym feel like they are making the most of limited time, and Imogen and Laudna feel like they are squandering an entire campaign of screentime. Also, I know chemistry is "you know it when you see it" and ultimately subjective but Imogen and Laudna fail to have it and Dorian and Orym do for me and it's that simple. I think this post also makes some good points about how in failing to ever challenge each other and in dropping every disagreement without resolution, Imogen and Laudna feel flat, whereas Dorian and Orym haven't resolved every disagreement but neither have they ignored them, which makes it a much more dynamic relationship to watch despite the decreased amount of time. I think had Imogen and Laudna's relationship been a slow burn, if any sense of the two years together was ever developed, or if any of their fights had actually come to something, this wouldn't be the case but as is more time actually hurts them because that time is about as interesting as sawdust.
#it is also really funny like if more fic = better ship then the best ship in this fandom is shadowgast and it's not close#if more time onscreen together = better then i think fjorester wins#if most popular wins then campaign 2 is best. like again Number Go Big Thing Get Better is an embarrassingly stupid way to think#and. dare i say. capitalist.#cr tag#answered#anonymous
