i’ve been thinking a lot about that article that interviewed these rich white 19-20 year old kids who voted for trump and how so many of them said they did it because they were tired of being told what they couldn’t say and wanted to be able to make offensive jokes again. the world we live in is so individualistic and devalues empathy to such an insane degree.

so it’s like, do i think every player who went to the white house is a trump supporter who voted for him? no, probably not. but the league is, by a vast majority, full of rich white men who likely grew up in rich white communities in a sport that devalues empathy and places so much weight on tradition. so they don’t care. going to meet the president is part of the experience of winning the stanley cup and they want the full traditional experience and they don’t care about the current political climate or what being photographed smiling and thanking trump for his time is going to look or feel like to the people who are actually effected the most by what he’s done and what he’s threatening to do. they don’t care. they want to do the fun thing they earned for playing hockey good. it’s just depressing.

and like to be clear this isn’t a way of removing agency from these guys. lots of people grew up in environments like them and managed to break free of those ingrained messages and care about other people. most of these guys just don’t want to. they don’t want to think about politics beyond whether they’ll get fired for saying slurs and if they have to wear rainbow jerseys one night a year. is every player who didn’t use pride tape after travis dermott did homophobic? no. they just don’t care enough.

which is i guess sort of the problem with sports fandom, and something we have to sit with whenever these situations happen. these are real people. they’re not characters on a show who have plot lines and character arcs. and people are often disappointing.

i don’t know if i’m going anywhere with this. i guess maybe i’d like to remind us all to be kind to each other. to be empathetic. we’ve all got our different lines in the sand for what makes players persona non gratas to us and trying to use that as a gotcha for fandom beef can only really come back to bite us. what am i gonna say to a matthew tkachuck fan when sidney crosby did the same thing when the pens won in 2017? id like to think the players i support would be different but realistically they probably wouldn’t. florida fans and tkachuk fans are in the spot they’re in because their team won the cup, not because the team and players are uniquely more evil or more trump-supporting than anyone else. i don’t want to gotcha anyone. we’re all out here trying to have fun in our sandboxes in a world where empathy is a weakness and people who really matter to us disappoint and hurt us, sometimes just by not caring at all.

Authors notes: this is for my beloved @heresthestorymorningglory who has been my best friend, my sister, my beta reader, my favourite writer, my supporter and everything in between since we met through fandom a year and a half ago and have been writing and having fun with our favourite characters together since. Logan’s an old love for both of us, but for her birthday he’s entirely hers. Title comes from one of her Logan songs, I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can) by Taylor Swift.

Logan couldn’t remember the last time he allowed himself to feel. He wasn’t sure he still possessed the ability, even if he stopped numbing every thought with the soothing sting of alcohol. It provided him the only moments of quiet he’d experienced in years, or at least, something close to it.

I’m sorry for asking but I don’t know where else to turn but— do you or anyone else who might see this question have any tips for writing Mary Linton? Especially in a fic where Arthur falls in love with a female oc or a reader. I find it hard to write without either demonizing her or making Arthur look completely uncharacteristically over her. That being said, I have no problem with the fics that dive into their dare I say toxicity of a relationship but I just don’t want to be extreme lol

So I don’t claim to be any kind of expert on this, but I’ll tell you my way of approaching it. There is no right answer on how to approach this; it is all about how you want to approach. That is the joy of fandom. I’m not sure if this will even qualify as tips, but I’ll just extrapolate on my approach.

In my writing canon, Arthur certainly still cares for Mary. Pines for her. After all, she was his first true love. Mary also pines for him, she loves him deeply, but cannot condone his lifestyle, and cannot live within his existence. Frankly, he’s a murderer. A killer, a thief, an outlaw. An overall bad person, even he says so.

That’s why she begs him to run away. If only he can give up being an outlaw, it will work!

But that gets into the toxicity. Is that asking too much because it is that is who Arthur is? Is that asking too much to change? We as the players mostly think so. But we also play AS Arthur. For Mary, someone who was never forced to scrape by, Arthur’s behavior is abhorrent. From her perspective, it shouldn’t be that much to ask of Arthur to stop being a bad person.

Mary has the luxury to ask that of him. She has never had to scrape by for existence. She has never had to resort to criminality to live.

In my writing canon, I think that is the difference. If a female OC is running with the gang because they are an orphan, an outlaw, a widow, an outsider with nothing, that OC doesn’t have the luxury to ask Arthur to change.

Arthur sees and knows that he can never give Mary what she’s asking for. He’s not going to change his ways (in the canon, he is not going to leave the gang, which he loves also).

But over time, there is that OC… she may be there. They may bond. There may be tension. There may be attraction. She doesn’t ask Arthur to change.

Mary’s love, tragically, is conditional. Which I can’t blame her for!

I love you, but you need to change. For you, for me, for us.

Maybe that female OC isn’t asking Arthur to change.

I love you, in just the flawed way that you are.

I actually like Mary Linton. As soon as I finished the game I actually started writing an A/M fic. Their love story is incredibly tragic. They both obviously love each other, but are unwilling to meet on either side of the chasm between them.

So writing Mary, I try not to make her mean, or out of touch, or overly manipulative. I write her as a woman deeply in love with a man who won’t make that final commitment to her. And the asking for help that she does? Very much part of it is to see Arthur again, because again, she is in love. And he loves her too. And always will.

But he has room in his heart to grow. Maybe part of it will belong to his first love. But maybe he will grow to love a woman that does not or cannot ask him to fundamentally change.

Okay, so I’d like to clear something up because this is really getting out of hand.

This is NOT a roleplay blog. I’ve gotten roped into this through the whole war arc. Let me explain.

First of all, a lot of the verbiage I’ve used leading up to and through the war is analogous. “Rats” originally referred to my followers, kinda? moreso just the people within my circle, or just anyone I want to call a rat. As my pinned post says, anyone who follows me is a rat, or an honorary ray of they don’t want to be seen as a rodent. (Looking at you @lolli-popples)

My kingdom is just my blog, my follower base, my fandom essentially.

And if you ever hear me talk about the court, that’s my discord server.

But all in all, the rat king is *kind of* a character? I never really thought of “the rat king” as a separate entity. I was always trying to kind of skirt this line between a persona and a character, if that makes sense. But it was always meant to be kept in mind that the rat king is in fact an online persona. Rats are a brand. Kind of like Slimecicle. He’s not literally slime, and no one treats him as such, but the brand is goop. Ooze. Sludge. I’m the rat king, and everyone understands that, but I’m treated as a king and I call my subjects vermin blah blah blah, the brand is rats. But really it’s just me. Does that make sense?

So running the rat of the year thing, it’s the same deal. Kind of in character, but mostly persona.

And then Rat detector fuckin declares WAR and everyone is suddenly acting in character, so I act in persona, still on that line of persona/character. And as people start veering into roleplay, it pushes me into the position where the only way to play off the bit is to also lightly roleplay. And now suddenly it’s all roleplay, which wasn’t my intention, and it’s gotten kind of weird, and now here we are.

Edit: I’d like to say, though, I love these big events, like the rat of the year election and the war. I love being able to make a community come together and do some weird shit. beautifully said. i have so many feelings about this because it’s literally all i ever see. i actually feel so bad for those curious casual readers who stumble upon posts and ask questions like they should and have every right to do and get told a bunch of BS. that kind of experience completely takes away from their overall effect of the stories and fandom. it’s hostile and disgusting and turns readers off from trying to fit in or accept the story in the way they want to. just as everyone should be given the same right to do.

SJM is not about to spill all of elain’s deep and dirty secrets in everyone else’s books. but she leaves clues and breadcrumbs in each story in order to lead up to it. we saw nesta as someone who was cold and indifferent towards her loved ones but also headstrong and taking shit from no one, and we saw potential in nesta’s powers during the war in ACOWAR. but then the novella and first half of her book had her isolating herself because of how terrified she was of not only her powers but of losing the people she pushed away out of that fear. she was not perfect or anywhere near that, she said and did things that shed her in a bad light. and she had to be shown actively working her way back up again. that was not going to be told in feyre’s POV and her growth and development and process of healing sure asf wasn’t about to be shown in anyone else’s book. people didn’t like nesta very much back then and now, after we got to see and understand her better, she’s probably the most loved archeron in the series.

people also think low of elain now. they happen to think she’s the worst sister of the group for whatever reason suits their fancy that day, but the point is that now that she’s the next in line there are significant things being laid out for us. we are now being shown left and right that she is not who most expected her to be, that she is capable of surprising even those closest to her. that there is some bark to her bite. they think she’s boring? too weak? too selfish? they haven’t even seen HALF of what her story is about. and her story has been the most drawn out. things have been left unresolved for her for 3 books now. her trauma from the cauldron, her powers, and the mating bond with lucien, specifically. and then we also see moments between her and azriel that are indicative of a forbidden romance that has incredibly high stakes and that’s ALSO not about to be tied up or resolved in anyone else’s book. in a bonus chapter most casual readers of the series don’t even know exists. and you know why? because aside from az being cold and broody, completely on par for his character, nothing came of it. all it did was set up the angst and tension for a forbidden romance.

there is no story for g/wyn and azriel to make. they trained together because of her connection to nesta and how important she was to nesta’s arc and development. her scenes with az were shown in a trainer/trainee fashion and is he proud of her? and what she’s been able to overcome and accomplish? absolutely. as he should be. but there was nothing else. it completely takes away from the growth and development she went through by revolving her worth around a man. and we don’t need to see her as this perfectly flawed or unflawed character because it isn’t necessary moving forward. anything that happened between her and az in that bonus chapter? almost as if it NEVER happened.

and, let’s also consider the fact that SJM herself said the novella, which most people on that side of the fandom has avidly ignored and/or told people to ignore, was laying the groundwork for the remaining spinoffs in the series. g/wyn is NOT in that novella and we have NO indication that she even would be. not a single thing. but do you know who was? nesta and her spiraling and cassian feeling the brunt of that. and lucien and elain. elain and az. az and mor. we all canonically know that mor does NOT love azriel, not in the way he loves her because she is for the girls. so what does that actually tell you? that the only viable love-triangle is between lucien/elain/azriel. she is mated to lucien and she has mutual feelings for az. that right there shows another flaw for both our elriel babies until it’s actively dealt with.

though the last paragraph seems off base, it is just there as a reminder that holding g/wyn and her morals as a character in any significant light, right or wrong, is not necessary for the story moving forward. it’s truly not a hard concept to grasp. it’s been spelled out in every possible way for us.

i’m so sorry to hijack this reply but i gotta let these things out or i’ll actually scream. 🖤

i’m laughing at the fact that gwynriels are trying to say that we claim elain is perfect and without flaws.

i’ve never seen an elriel make this claim. in fact, we are all incredibly excited to see elain’s growth in the next book for this reason. you can’t have a compelling story without a flawed character. we just don’t degrade her for those flaws by calling her boring or useless or weak, unlike them.

meanwhile gwynriels pop a hemorrhoid any time we try to say that gwyn isn’t perfect because to them, she is flawless, which is why she needs to be with azriel because he “deserves better.”

Let me get this straight:

The same Gwynriels that have called Elriels misogynistic and other non-polite words as well as attacking them for believing in the LightSinger theory or having any theory that potrays Gwyn to be morally grey instead of perfection - the same group of people that have Gwyn as the flawless friend, auntie, spy, warrior, ruler etc etc. She literally has 0 flaws. Even Gwynriels haven’t bothered to theorised about Gwyn’s character growth/journey. Its always about what she can do for Azriel/Nesta. And it makes sense. Most of her stans that are also gwynriels only like her bcs she is a stereotypical character with little depth so its perfect for stans who love to self-insert themselves.

Saying Mass doesn’t like to write about perfect characters with 0 faults but then stanning and theorising Gwyn - who has 0 flaws - will get a book… is just hilarious. Honestly, they embarrass themselves 😭

When I - or other elriels - say elain is “perfect” its said in an exaggerated, “I love this character so much” way. Not in a “she’s actually perfect and has done nothing wrong” kind of way. Yes. Elain has flaws. She has growth to do, a journey of self-discovery to grow. The difference is: Elriels just don’t hate Elain for BS reasons like Gwynriels. Elriels don’t find Elains behaviour towards Lucien wrong or something she needs to apologise for - the way Eluciens do. We do not criticise Elain the way Eluciens/Gwynriels do. Their criticism is always based on misogyny. As far as I know - elriels may critique Elain but what has that woman really done wrong? In a series where you have r4pists, SAs, emotional or physical abusers- Elain not planting a vegetable garden as a child doesn’t seem like a big thing to hold against her. Im not saying she is “perfect” she definitely needs to apologise to Feyre but for Elain - it will be more self-discovery, dabbling into her fanged beast side etc.

probably that she loves guns or something...she doesn’t love guns, she doesn’t enjoy using them, nor does she even pride herself on her aim in my opinion. she simply recognizes that it’s a skill of hers and, because it’s a skill of hers, it’s something she has to fall back on time and time again for her safety and the safety of others. she’s careful with that and she’s serious about it. [“there’s a six year old in the house—i know where i keep my guns.”] her relationship with weaponry and just battle in general really stands out to me against other characters. we can take eddie and steve for an example; in the field scene in s4, we see eddie bragging about/playing with his spiked shield in front of dustin. he made it, it is an extension of him, he’s proud of it. in a way, the only thing that is keeping his courage up at that point is his desire to prove himself. he doesn’t want to be the one that retreats, but obviously this is nightmarish shit, so he kind of starts to think of the weapons as toys to make it easier (or that’s how i saw it, anyway). just like a dnd game. steve had a similar thing going with his (nancy’s) bat—sure, he’s protected plenty of people with that bat, and that’s great, he’s very brave, but the way he swings it around like it’s a toy is a little objectionable because it’s like…okay, that’s enough, let’s not play with that. the bat is seen as an extension of steve as well, and for both these boys, as brave as they are (i’m really not trying to completely shit on them, i’m not, and steve is a protective person which is wonderful), we as viewers do get this sense of—particularly during battle scenarios—how aware they are of…themselves. it’s all about them, it’s all about what they can represent for the group (valor, basically). it’s about their personal growth. disclaimer i realize that this is a show with a lot of monster fighting/action happening in it, and also the duffers want their characters to have badass moments, and also they like to lean into some campier physical acting (hello unnecessary flip steve did onto that mattress), which is—fine.

but i find it so weird that a good portion of this fandom reduces nancy to her battle skills, skills that they think represent her identity. i find it weird that people don’t see how much it takes out of her having to be the leader all the time, that people think she’s driven by ANYTHING other than her survivor’s guilt, that she’s supposedly found confidence and purpose in the guns or something, that she’s empowered through that. i mean. yeah, she’s empowered by the fact that she’s not dying. that she can prevent others from dying. i would be much quicker to argue that steve finds confidence/purpose/maybe even satisfaction in battle (not that he doesn’t genuinely want to protect his friends, he does, not that he doesn’t have ptsd, i am sure he does, and he probably doesn’t take literal pleasure in the fighting, per se). there’s just this…..desperation to be the big savior there. i’m sorry but there is.

he projects this onto dustin and eddie at the end of s4 [“don’t try to be cute or be a hero or something”] to which dustin reassures [“don’t worry, you can be the hero steve”] with a judgmental note in his voice, honestly. which is interesting, too.

nancy does not want to be a savior—she just wants to save.

she uses guns only because she’s good with them, because she has to, she needs protection and others need protection. i’m sure there are times for her when pulling the trigger is somewhat of a cathartic release, but i also think she kind of NEVER wants to pick one up again for the rest of her life. of course, if that happened, she wouldn’t be cool and interesting to [some] fans anymore, so. whatever.

tldr; nancy is full of fear and rage, not violence, and she is probably SICK of those damn guns !!! please start looking at her as more than just a “badass.”
