#but it’s disappointing to say the least

Whoops turns out I have Further Thoughts on this.
So, here's the thing. We could argue a lot about whether or not characters in horror films make stupid decisions and how it depends on the individual film and what have you all day long. And I'm sure we could come up with a few examples on either side of the argument.
But I think there's a broader point here which is that when people say "what if there was a horror movie that featured a convenient and straightforward way for the characters to get out of trouble without making any sacrifices along the way, so they did that and were fine, the end", and especially when they present this as some kind of refreshing new take on the genre...
Well, aside from the fact that this would make for a very boring and disappointing story for anyone who actually wanted to watch a horror film, it has the same energy as those people who are presented with moral dilemmas as a thought exercise and get fixated on "what if there was a way to stop the trolley and save all six people" "what if you could replace the Omelas kid with a robot" and so on. It's a copout, and it really does come off more like they're balking at the idea that suffering is sometimes unavoidable, that sometimes there are no easy answers and any decision you make comes at a cost.
It reminds me of this other post that was going round a decade or so ago, where the title was something like "horror movies for our generation" and the gist of the whole thing was essentially "if millennials were in a horror movie scenario we'd be able to fix everything and save ourselves straight away because we're so smart and progressive and have the best resources!" (Which to add a bit of extra context was clearly pushing back against a lot of the "millennials are stupid children who don't know how to do anything" think piece discourse that was floating around at the time) and a lot of people in the notes (possibly even including me, at the time) going "omg I need this!! I'd watch the shit out of this!!" which, when you think about it, is really weird when you acknowledge that the scenarios being described were essentially just "what if something that claimed to be a horror story actually just had no plot."
The idea of a horror story where the characters make sensible, realistic, understandable decisions is potentially a great premise (and again, there are plenty of existing horror stories that already meet that criteria.) Crucially, though, that can't be enough to get them out of trouble, at least not instantaneously.
If you could avoid getting lost in the scary woods just by using your trusty functioning gps tracker, there would be no story. So in an actual horror story, the gps wouldn't work, or it would be hijacked by some sinister entity and end up landing the characters right back where they started, or lead them further into danger. The characters happen to have the exact right combination of personalities and skillsets to instantly defeat the monster and go home? Well, first of all that's just dumb luck, and second of all that can't work right away either. There would be a different monster that they can't defeat so easily, or they simply don't have enough information or opportunity for most of the story to be able to actually use their collective skills against it. You managed to evade the killer and get out of the creepy log cabin unharmed? Congratulations. Your best friend is still in there, though, and they might be injured. Are you comfortable leaving them behind and hoping they can fend for themself while you get away? What if it's your child? Sometimes the "stupid" decision is the one you wouldn't be able to live with yourself if you didn't make.
I'm going to give the "cozy romance" person props because at least they're honest about the fact that they don't actually want a horror story, and at least the story they're proposing would actually have a plot, just not a horror one. I can see where their thought process was going; there is something cool about the idea of a secret secondary plot going on in the background that the protagonist managed to narrowly avoid, that we can put the pieces together about if we pay close enough attention. (It's not the best example, there are undoubtedly better ones, but it reminds me a bit of Shaun of the Dead where we get these hints that there's a doppelgänger squad running around in the background, and it seems like just a one-off joke until one of them shows up at the end with the military in tow.)
But the thing about that example and a lot of the other ones is that there's eventually a payoff. Ultimately it does affect the protagonists in some way, even if it's sometimes a subtle way. And there's something sort of weird, and just a little jarring, about the idea of reading a story where you're sort of vaguely aware that horrible things are happening to some poor bastard in the background, and your only takeaway from that is supposed to be "oh well, sucks to be them. Let's continue to enjoy watching these Sensible people kiss! Yay!" Apart from maybe being a cool sort of easter egg, what exactly is the point of this subplot, besides imparting the profoundly unsatisfying message of "you can easily avoid danger and have a wonderful life if you're just smart and sensible enough!" when that's so often and so tragically untrue in real life.
And that's why I feel like this would be a much better premise if the horror eventually caught up with the protagonist. Because sorry folks, but escaping the genre unscathed is too easy and too unsatisfying. It has to at least be a challenge, or there's no story worth reading.
You can't just replace the Omelas kid with a robot.
people are so mean about horror movie victims like. sorry but if i had gone to a cabin in the woods with my friends as a teenager you couldn't have stopped us from reading aloud from the evil tome. how were they supposed to know the ancient curse was real they're like 17

you were robbed of summer, i was robbed of you
jason todd x civilian reader
when jason left, your light did too. six years of your life spent attached at jason’s hip crumbled around you with one knock on your door, and a small shoe box of old journals and trinkets was placed in your hands. they told you the funeral was that next week. you barely had time to register that they told you how he really died. asked you to keep it to yourself.
that boy you spent your childhood with, running through dark allies and making the best of your shitty little lives was gone. the boy who read to you, sat in the gamestop and played the trial of mario kart with you til you got kicked out, gone. you didn’t even get to say goodbye. they didn’t even let you see him before they buried him.
at least the bastard pitied you was kind enough to let you visit Mr. Wayne’s graveyard. you left letters, flowers, anything that reminded you of him. there were too many times that Mr. Wayne found you passed out against his tombstone. you’d wake up back in your own home, unsure of how you got there. it didn’t matter.
the next four years were miserable, barely scraping by without a few trips to the hospital from your constant exhaustion. you made it, at least. got a little cat to give you something to motivate you. her name was robin. a little stray you found on your fire escape. jason would’ve loved her.
you could see it when you closed your eyes. jason sitting on your couch, crooked smile wide as robin climbed all over him. how he’d whisper to her when he thought you couldnt hear. you saw him everywhere, doing everything. because that’s where he should be.
heroes came back all the time. the flashes, superboy, impulse, even batman. what did you need to do to bring him back? what did you have to give up? did you need to tear yourself in two all over again just to get your best friend back?
these thoughts played over and over, every single day that passed. it got to the point where you could see little silver hairs sprouting out of your head after april passed. they got thicker in august, when you kneeled by the edge of your toilet and sobbed so hard you got sick. he should be 21 now, piss drunk on your ragged old couch and cackling at how you stumbled around.
you felt pathetic when robin came and nuzzled at your leg, meowing for your attention. you ran your fingers through her fur before pulling her into your arms, feeling her purr. “how dumb do i look right now, jayce?” you muttered to yourself, bitterly. “makin’ you real proud, i bet.”
you didn’t hear the boots hit against your fire escape, nor did you see red hood slink down to peer through your smudged windows. it’d become a habit of his, though he was disappointed you weren’t as aware of your surroundings as you should’ve been.
jason watched. almost nightly. thats more than what he thought he deserved. nearly threw up in his mask the first time he saw your grey streak, stress induced.
the two of you were strangers now, he reminded himself consistently. the boy you knew was long gone, and he strongly doubted you would ever accept any of his changes. he’d hoped you’d changed for the worst. maybe he’d find something he could move on from. something to hate you for. maybe he could throw away the letters he wrote to you in hopes that one day he could come to you. in hopes he’d be able to come home.
thats what he’d always found in you. he craved it- the simplicity of you. hell, he’d even take you yelling at him for being stupid. for leaving you. he’d find a home in that, as long as it was your voice raising at him. before he came back, he was afraid you’d forgotten. he’d hoped you didn’t, in a fucked up way he hoped you’d hurt the same way he did. that you’d never forgotten him.
he regretted those wishes the minute he saw you crying over a cheap cookie with a candle stabbed through, drunk off your own ass. the date didn’t even cross his mind when he landed, only looking to check in on you. he had to fight back his own tears when it dawned on him. even now, you cared about his birthday?
if he wasn’t so stupid you wouldn’t be alone. if he didn’t care so much, if he didn’t go to-
you looked up before he got to finish any of his thoughts, letting out a shrill scream when you saw the masked vigilante on your fire escape. if he wasn’t so upset he would’ve laughed at how fast you grabbed your cat and raced to your bedroom, nearly tripping against the toys strewn about the floor. he’d wanted to mock you about how you spoiled that cat. jason wanted to be with you again. to be normal with you.
he’d never see you again if he could just tell you that you’re what got him through it all. it’s always been you, always will be. thirty minutes pass while he contemplated if he deserves to be selfish with you before he just said fuck it. he slid your window open and slipped through, searching for your room.
he’d get on you about actually locking the damn window later.
jason couldn’t find it in him to care about hiding that it was him. it was you he was telling. no matter the fear blooming from deep withinin him, he knew you’d see him. trust him. love him, if he let you.
the red hood mask got thrown onto your couch while he scrambled to your door. he knew you could hear his footsteps, probably scared shitless. how was he supposed to start this?
“been a long time…” he spoke, barely able to mask the shake in his voice. “i didn’t… i didn’t think you’d still think about me, honestly. i hoped you did, but… everyone else seemed to replace me. shoulda known you never would’ve…” jason couldn’t feel how his whole body shook as he kept speaking, barely remembering when he slid down to the floor.
“thought about you every god damn day, y’know? always wanted to tell you that. wondered if you went to school. if you were still damn awful at chemistry… did’jya start workin’ at that little cafe? said y’would once you turned sixteen…” he rambled on, tears spilling down his scarred cheeks. “i know y’don’t know me anymore… y’lost your jason… but i probably lost my you too… y’look miserable. that my fault too?”
jason heard the floorboards creak from the other side of the door. a quiet shuffling, alongside a very upset meow as a cats paw swiped under the door, catching at his jeans. he laughed quietly, setting his hand down so the cat could paw at him instead of the jeans that he just stole off some douchebag that tried to mug a mother thrifted. he felt his whole body tense when you finally spoke. “her name’s robin… thought jason would’ve liked that. none’a this is his fault.”
“i do.” he pressed his head against the door, seconds away from begging you to open it. a cat… you named your scraggly ass cat after him. you sounded exhausted- if he could snap his fingers and take it all from you, he’d do it in a heartbeat. “jason’s dead… they said he got killed by…” he let out a sharp sigh. “i wanted to come back to you, i swear. it’s a real long story.”
he heard more shuffling behind the door, and then a click. your head peeked through the crack. “…i never make plans on your birthday…i have time?” for the first time in a long time, jason felt a small smile pull at the corner of his mouth. “are you gonna remember any of this in the morning, drunkard?”
his grin widens when you shrug, teary eyes boring into his. “then i get to see you for the first time all over again. jackass.”

i don’t mean to disrespect jason because obviously he can’t control other grown men’s misogynistic views, but i just Know that no one on the chiefs would ever make a similar comment about kylie and that’s in part because they respect travis and his leadership and know he would not tolerate that bs. jason has taken on a role of representing eagles and supporting them and views them as his brothers, so idk maybe also support your real brother and his family
#‘blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb’ well then apologize for your covenant’s actions#im sure travis does NOT blame jason for this and tbh neither do i but it’s so disappointing (to say the least) to see that your community#would say shit like that against your family. not to mention your fans reactions#people upset about him not posting about the eagles win like no shit sherlock he must know this is fucked up#arshia talks

it's my time to shine, ayy 🫶🏼 'm on a whole mission, (you can see it on my blog), reader is cocky, smug, little-shit femme, her and Abby are friends with "benefits" (as: Abby and reader take care of each other, share a bed, kisses "as friends" using it as a stress relief, etc) yet every single time reader try to, like, DTR (define the relationship, duh!), Abby straight up ghosts reader on that convo, (she has major comphet vibes, but that's just a lil' headcanon, don't come for me) now, reader? she ain't no doormat, she's PETTY. Capital P-E-T-T-Y. so when they're both forced (forced proximity? oops...) for a mission, reader looks at Abby dead in the eyes when they're aline and hit her with: "girl, i've been wantin' to kick your ass all week"
OOOOOO THIS IS GOOD! I did my best, mini Drabble
Dodge, duck, ghost - A.A
Abby Run-Like-a-Bitch Anderson,
Manny cried laughing the first time he heard you call her that. But you weren’t joking.
Not when the last time you saw Abby, she was bolting out of your room like the WLF had just declared war. And before that? Her tongue was down your throat, hands gripping your waist like she never planned on letting go. That’s how it felt every-time.
That was how she always was touchy, needy, all over you behind closed doors. But you weren’t some secret, something to be ashamed of. Not when there were plenty of other people who’d proudly parade you around. But unfortunately for you, the heart wants what it wants. And unlike Abby, you actually listen to yours. So when the moans and cries had stopped bouncing off your walls, she said something that caught you off guard.
Abby’s breathing was still uneven, her fingers lazily tracing circles against your hip like she wasn’t ready to let go just yet. The room was quiet, save for the sound of your heart still thudding in your chest. And then, she said it. soft, almost like she didn’t mean to say it out loud.
“It’s— this, is different with you…you feel like home”
You blinked, turning your head to look at her. Her gaze was on the ceiling, brows slightly furrowed, like she was already regretting the words.
“Home..?” A slow smile crept onto your lips. “…Sounds long term,” you teased, nudging her side.
That made her freeze. The lazy circles against your hip stopped. Then, before you could react, she was pulling away, sitting up and reaching for her clothes like she’d just been caught doing something wrong. Afterglow or not, she meant it. And you had to push. You’d let her dance around the obvious for too long. For God’s sake, you were there when she broke up with Owen. Listened to her go on and on about how much of a bitch Mel was, how wrong it all felt. So the least she could do was be honest. not just with you, but with herself.
And like clockwork, she stiffened. Sat up. Started getting dressed like she hadn’t just spent the last hour tangled up with you, her face buried against your neck.
“Uht-uht. Hey. Where are you going?” you asked, watching her yank on her shirt.
Abby didn’t look at you. Just laced up her boots and muttered, “I gotta be up early.”
You sat up too, arms resting on your knees. The only thing keeping your sheets warm now was the disappointment. This couldnt keep going on. “Abby, can you stop for two—”
Thud
But the door was already closed behind her.
”—seconds,” you finished, to the empty room.
That was weeks ago.
And wasn’t the first time she’s done that. You never pushed her to label herself, bi, lesbian, it didn’t matter to you. But with her, it went in one ear and out the other. At first, you tried to play it cool. If she needed time to sort through whatever that was, fine. But then she started dodging you. Switched up her gym schedule. Took shifts at different hours. Disappeared from the mess hall when you walked in. She was practically a ghost.
“Yeah, she definitely avoiding you chica” manny said turning back to his plate
“Wow Thanks manny” you huffed. Yeah, That much was obvious.
The Abby you knew wouldn’t just run off. Or at least, the Abby you thought you knew. So when Isaac briefed you on your next mission and didn’t mention her name, you almost bought it. Almost. Until you showed up at the post and caught Abby mid-change, swapping out a sweat-stained shirt for a clean one.
She paused when she saw you, shoulders stiff like she’d already knew where this was going. You cocked your head, waiting for her to say something.
She didn’t. Of course she didn’t.
“You know what—” you sighed, setting your pack down. Then, dead serious, you looked her right in the eyes and said—
“Girl, I’ve been wantin’ to kick your ass all week.”
Abby exhaled through her nose, shaking her head like she knew this was coming. “Jesus.”
“Jesus? Oh no, don’t bring him into this now,” you scoffed, stepping closer. “He ain’t the one who ghosted me after weeks of—what did you call it? ‘Taking care of each other?’” You even threw up air quotes, just to be a little shit about it.
Abby’s jaw tightened. “I didn’t ghost you.”
You blinked. Then laughed at her, like she was doing stand up on stage. “Oh, right. So what do you call changing your gym schedule, eating at different times, avoiding me like I got the damn plague?”
Abby dragged a hand down her face, resting it on her hip. “I just—”
You held a hand up before she could choke something out. “Say some bullshit, I dare you,” you cut in, tilting your head.
She clenched her jaw. Looked away. “I just needed space.”
You stared at her. “Space? Call NASA for that shit. You were in my bed two weeks ago. Two.”
Abby shifted, muttering, That was different.”
“Oh yeah?” You crossed your arms. “How?”
Silence.
You let it hang there, watching her fingers flex at her sides like she wanted to ball them into fists but knew that wouldn’t fix this. Like she knew you were right but refused to say it. You exhaled sharply, shaking your head. “See, this is exactly why I said what I said. You know what you want, Abby. You’re just too chickenshit to admit it.”
Abby’s head snapped up. “That’s not true.”
“Then prove it.” You stepped closer, tilting your chin up. “Tell me you don’t want me. Right here, right now.”
Abby just stared at you, jaw tight, breath a little unsteady.
The tension was thick. You could see it in the way her fists clenched, in the way her eyes flickered over your face like she was searching for something. some way out, some way forward. Anything.
“Yeah. That’s what I thought.”
But then, someone called both of your names, signaling it was time to move out. Abby exhaled sharply, grabbed her pack, and brushed past you without another word.
You just sighed , slinging your bag over your shoulder. Three days.
She’d have to deal with you for three whole days.
The mission was simple: track and clear a small group of Scars camping out near the old radio tower. It should’ve been easy. Would’ve been, if not for the unspoken thing crackling in the air between you and Abby. She was doing her best to ignore it, kept her distance, kept her eyes forward, barely said a word unless it was mission-related.
You? You were having the time of your life.
Every chance you got, you brushed past her, just close enough to graze her arm. Threw her smug little looks when she glared at you. Smiled real pretty when she clenched her jaw and looked away. Petty? Yeah. But so was avoiding someone just because they called you out on your own bullshit. Your own feelings that were right in front of her.
By the time the mission was over and you’d made it back to the safe house for the night, you could feel the tension rolling off her. Everyone else had turned in for the night, sprawled out across old mattresses and sleeping bags. But you weren’t done with her yet.
She was sitting near the window, legs stretched out, back against the wall. She had her arms crossed, fingers tapping against her bicep like she was still wound up, still caught up in whatever thought, feelings words even, she refused to let out.
So you moved over to her. You crouched in front of her, hands on your knees, and grinned. “Y’know,” you said, voice just low enough that no one else could hear, “if you keep runnin’ from your feelings like this, you’re gonna pull something.”
Abby’s fingers stopped tapping. Her eyes flicked to you, sharp and tired. “Not now.”
“Oh, so later then?” Your smile grew. “I’ll pen you in.” “How’s Friday? That work for you?”
Abby exhaled through her nose. “Jesus, do you ever shut up?
You leaned in slightly, dropping your voice even lower. “Mm, You used to like when I ran my mouth. What happened to that?”
Abby’s jaw tightened.
You tilted your head. “What, nothing to say? No pissy comeback? No ‘shut the fuck up’ ,” You reached out, lightly tapping her knee. “C’mon, Abs. Say something.”
And that’s when it happened.
Abby moved fast. One second, she was sitting against the wall, and the next, she was grabbing you by the front of your shirt and yanking you up until your back hit the opposite wall. The breath caught in your throat, but before you could recover, she was right there, her face inches from yours, eyes dark, chest rising and falling like she’d finally had enough. You’d finally pissed her off enough.
You could feel the frustration flowing off of her. And man, did you love it.
“You think this” she gestured between you two “is a game?” Abby hissed, voice low, rough.
Your pulse spiked, but you kept your cool, rolling your eyes at her. “I think you’re mad ‘cause you know I’m right.”
Abby’s grip on your shirt tightened. “You make everything so fucking difficult ” she muttered, shaking her head.
“Oh yeah?” Your voice was barely a whisper now.
Abby’s eyes flickered to your mouth. Then, finally. finally. she broke. “Yeah.”
Her mouth crashed into yours, rough and frustrated, her hands sliding down to grab your waist, pressing you firmly against the wall. You gasped into it, hands flying to her arms, gripping her tight as she kissed you like she was trying to shut you up for good.
Like she was trying to prove something, to you, to herself maybe.
But she’d already lost. Because when she pulled back, breathing hard, you just smiled before speaking again. “Atta girl. Knew you’d crack.”
Abby groaned, dropping her head against your shoulder. “I hate you.”
“Mmn, no you don’t.” You grinned, running a hand through her hair. “But keep tellin’ yourself that, baby.” Her hands tightened on your waist.
Yeah, you’d won this round. But she still had a long way to go.

Part two to this. This series also has a title now: John has liked your photo! Hope you enjoy this as much as last time. Does it also show how little I know about kissing?
The second time you and John see each other in a cafe in the city centre. This time it's you who suggests meeting up. It made John feel giddy and like a schoolboy again when your text lit up his phone screen.
Your anxiousness made you way too early — as usual. But not too soon after, John appears in the cafe, also way too early. It makes you giggle.
"What is your go-to coffee order?", you ask while waiting in line, eyeing the menu and the delicious-looking pastries.
John hums, his hands clasped behind his back. "I hate to disappoint you, doll, but I'm a black coffee guy. Or tea."
Turning towards him with your eyes wide, not knowing if it is because of the nickname or the confession to drink coffee with nothing in it. "Not even some milk?"
He shakes his head with a smile. "None. If I'm in shipped out I'm happy to get a cuppa so I got used to the stuff raw."
Now you feel stupid for your usual very sweet coffee order. John sees the subtility in your face and he bumps his shoulder against yours. "Well, you are what you eat. So no wonder you're so sweet."
It makes your face heat up and you stumble over your words, not sure how to get out a response.
The line quickly moves along and John orders his black coffee and you your white chocolate mocha. Before he has time to grab his wallet, you've whipped out your phone and paid for it. You give him a daring smile while giving your name.
The two of you go sit in a quiet corner and wait for the coffee to arrive. You are telling some story about what has happened at work this week and halfway your name gets called out. John holds out his hand so you can stay put, and he grabs the order.
"Sorry, go on", he says with a smile when he returns with the coffees, placing yours in front of you with the ear facing your dominant hand.
"So", you say after finishing your story, "we haven't really talked about what we seek. You know... with dating and such." You nervously trace the rim of the glass, glancing up at the man.
John's leaning relaxed back into the chair, his legs spread wide and a comfortable smile on his face. "Gauging the vibe, doll?"
You can't help but feel your cheeks heat up again as you slink slightly down. "Maybe. Wouldn't want to waste your time if you want something completely different than me." You shrug, trying to play it cool.
That makes him lean forward a bit. "You sayin' that your time's less valuable than mine?"
That leaves you gaping like a fish. And it makes John crack a cheeky smile, showing he's teasing you.
"So do I have to worry about crazy exes or something?", he asks with a smile.
You shrug, putting your hair behind your ear. "Don't have to worry about something that's never been there", you say casually, taking a sip of your drink.
John's eyes bulge out of their sockets. Did he hear you correctly? Have you never dated anyone? How could such a wonder as you not have boys and men lined up and down the street, jumping for just a glance from you?
"Do I?", you ask timidly at his wide eyes and no response.
Snapping out of his thoughts, he clears his throat. Now is the time to come clean. "I mean... not like you have to worry about her, but there is my ex-wife."
"Wife?!" You clasp a hand over your mouth as you said that a bit too loud. "A-and for how long are you divorced? If I may ask, at least."
John smiles at your bashfulness. "Almost two years. We were married just short of a year. It was impulsive and I quickly discovered that being married to her wasn't as great as I thought it would be."
Unconsciously, you reach out and take hold of his hand. You can understand how hard it is to admit something like that to practically a stranger. "It must have been hard, going through that time in your life. Never mind the judgement of others."
He nods. "Something like that. It was more of the pitying glances of my family and their comments that got me at first. Their opinions about her and me and our relationship weren't always the kindest. But you get used to it and after a while, you get desensitized."
As you open your mouth to say something, a call of your name makes the two of you turn your heads. "Oh lord", you mumble as your aunt and cousin come walking towards the two of you.
"How are you, dear? " your aunt smiles widely, pulling you up for a hug. "I haven't seen you in a while! How's school? Oh, right. Your mum told me you quit and are working now. How do you like it? And who is this?" She turns her attention towards John.
The man dutiful stands up and offers his hand to your aunt. "John Price, ma'am."
From behind your aunt, you see your cousin lean over and mouth the words, "Who's that?", to you. "Date", you mouth back. She checks him once over and nods in appreciation.
"Oh mum, didn't you say you needed to go to that one store before it closes?", asks your cousin loudly, pulling the attention from your aunt.
"Right! It was lovely meeting you, John. See you next time, dear." Your aunt kisses both your cheeks as a goodbye before pulling her daughter behind her. You just know you'll get a text from her later on to demand the tea.
"I am so sorry", you laugh as you sit back down, hiding your face behind your hands.
John joins you and shakes his hands. "It's fine. Aunts are kinda my speciality."
"Really?"
"No", he smiles.
The rest of the afternoon goes by with smiles and laughs and good conversation until the staff has to, again like last time, kick you out and you're reluctant to say goodbye to John.
He walked to your car. It cracked him up to see the bright yellow car that lights up when you press the unlock button. Oh, how fitting of you to drive such an eyesore.
You hoover by the door, fiddling with your keys. "I had a really good time today, John." You shyly look up, your cheeks radiating heat.
John slowly inches closer, laying a hand on your cheek. "I did too." His eyes flicker between your own and your lips. You can't help but swipe your tongue over your bottom lip before taking it between your teeth.
"I desperately wanted to kiss you all day. Can I kiss you?"
Looking at him, you nod, searching for the right words. Stumbling out a 'yeah', John closes the distance and lightly presses his lips against yours.
Not knowing what to do, you lean into the kiss and close your eyes. John slides his other hand around your middle to pull you flush against his body. Your hands feel awkward so you replicate what you've seen over the years in movies and TV and place them first on his shoulders before sliding to the back of his neck.
A soft grumble comes from deep within his chest before you pull back, feeling like you are going to pass out if you don't. Either from the lack of air or your first-ever kiss.
Smiling wide, John rests his forehead against yours. "How am I to drive away from you now, doll."
You shrug, still slightly out of breath. "I'm wondering that myself." A giggle escapes you, licking your lips. "But I really have to go through... My parents are waiting for me. We're going to my grandma..."
"Those blasted parents of yours", teases John, letting go of you. "But if you have to go. Text me when you get home safe?"
You nod, opening your car door. "Will do. You too?"
John nods with a smile and watches how you drive away. Dear God. Is he crazy that he could envision the rest of his life together with you after the second date?

This isn't some novel thought, but for me Fitzier begins in ep2, when Silna's father is brought onto Erebus
(a long-ish, GIF-heavy scene breakdown follows)
I won't cover the violations of Silna's beliefs, feelings and bodily autonomy which happen in these moments - they are of course terrible and very important. Instead, I want to focus on how the scene kicks off a new dynamic between Francis and James, how it lays a foundation for their subsequent closeness and how it changes our view of who James might be as a person.
Let’s begin.
Sir John and James arrive in the sick bay to join Stanley and Goodsir. Stanley says: "nope, not touching this one". Goodsir asks for leave to save the shaman's life. Franklin, already looking deeply disturbed by what's happening, hesitantly agrees.
Francis arrives. The operating table divides him from Franklin, Stanley and James — he is literally not on their side. All three men glare up at him as one: How is this maudlin MF going to make this horrible situation worse for us?
But while the three of them just stand there, Francis puts himself in charge. With a bit of help from McDonald, he takes hold of a distraught Silna and tries to explain what is happening, who they are, that they're not trying to do harm. It is in this moment that James becomes the only one on the opposite side of the table to step forward (to help Francis control the situation or at least to do something). He looks compelled to action but cannot act.
Okay... so here we see that maybe this guy isn't just Franklin's poodle (we saw a bit of that earlier in the episode - more on that later).
Meanwhile Franklin, as soon as Francis takes control, BUGGERS OFF. Of course this can be justified by him already having given his orders and no longer needing to be involved, but we know that a) he sneaks off when the situation is clearly fraught and Francis is clearly better suited to handle it, knowing Inuktitut among other things and b) he actually ends up hiding out in his cabin, freaking out while listening to the howls of the dying man. This is too strange, too awful for him. Not to mention: oh god, I'm stuck in the ice, I've just lost a lieutenant, I keep losing men, what are they going to think of me?
While Sir John is off having a lil meltdown.... James' eyes are firmly on Francis.
We don't even see him acknowledge his captain's departure.
But why is James there? The obvious answer is: to report back to Sir John, to make sure things don't get weird and that Francis doesn't do anything stupid on THEIR ship. After all, let's remember the last scene before this one where James is focused on Francis:
Here he was describing Francis as if he's got him pegged: he's a disappointed man, Sir John, he was no one's first choice etc etc.
I know what he is. Do you now, James?
(interesting framing the above scene, btw - James standing, active, Sir John focused on his creature comfort, the pipe, and questioning himself. James speaking in firm tones to his commander: "I will not allow..." — James is literally being reframed as a leader.)
Anyway, back to where we were.
While Goodsir sets about trying to remove the shot, we get a little glimpse of James: he looks frozen, uneasy, swaying in to stare at the wound (Oh Tobias, the actor that you are). Can we say flashbacks to the Chinese sniper? This must be seriously triggering for him. Something is shifting.
(Another aside: James is standing next to Stanley, the man who dug out the shot when he was hit by the sniper. That same man is now refusing to help. Hm.)
Next, Goodsir says: I can't save this man. Here something important happens: James and Francis share a look.
This is Francis, for the first time, acknowledging not just James still being in the bay at all — but that the two of them are in this moment together! Francis' eyes saying to James: I'm about to tell this woman her father is going to die and James acknowledging in return how awful that is. He presses his mouth, drops his eyes.
The little flash of connection doesn't last. When Silna starts to plead with her dying father, James once again reaches out across the table to Francis: what is she saying? But it's maybe too pushy, too "I need to be told what's going on" so Francis ignores him and it's McDonald who answers.
Next, Silna launches herself at her dying father. Here, once again, James tries to take an active role, to "help" by following Francis' cues on what to do.
James has been watching, learning, asking questions and now looks desperate to be part of the solution to this awful situation: to be in this with Francis. Look how similar their gestures are, how James looks to Francis for direction.
---
STOP - DOOM HAMMER TIME
The VERY first scene in which Francis and James become partners, take action together to keep something from happening, they effectively set in motion one of the biggest causes of their doom: Silna's father doesn't die as he should, Tuunbaq is not bound to anyone. Oh man. That's a whole other essay.
---
(Back to the scene....)
While they're wrestling with Silna, James, clearly emotional and upset by what is taking place, reaches out again, perhaps this time more sincerely: Look at me, Francis, I'm trying to help, at least tell me what's happening? This time Francis acknowledges him — actually SPEAKS to him for the first time.
In response, James looks particularly vulnerable and distraught.
Silna's father dies. We see how different James' reaction is to Francis'. Poor James. Maybe he wants a little bit more from Francis in that moment, one more shared look. Francis doesn't give it to him.
Aaaaaand here we are, it's almost over. Franklin swans in, the really bad, bloody stuff having already been dealt with. He re-asserts his command by giving an order to James to escort Silna off the ship. James… doesn't exactly spring into action. In fact, he doesn't even acknowledge the order verbally, unlike Stanley. What's going on in his head? What does he think about Francis in that moment?
Anyway, let's wrap up.
So much of this scene is about the shift in James’ perception of Francis. He suddenly sees a man who is hands-on, who can take charge, who doesn't walk away from a terrible and unusual situation, even when it's clear there's no good outcome. And of course he knows Sir John skipped off at first opportunity.
Francis, meanwhile, only briefly appears to acknowledge James —but only as far as we can see. Francis of course knows that James was there, that he stayed behind, that he tried to help, that he tried to understand.
This knowledge and this changed dynamic become apparent immediately, in the very next scene.
LOOK HOW THEY ARE FRAMED!!!
Sir John is already receding into the background. James and Francis sit — still opposite sides of a table but in essentially the same pose. They are partners, mirrors, leaning into each other. The few glances here, small as they are, are NOT at Sir John, but between James and Francis.
Anyway, here you go, that's me done. I fucking love this show.

Everything will be fine – Akaashi x reader wc 629 – f!reader, brother!Bokuto
Your older brother Bokuto was not disappointed – nor particularly surprised – when you and Akaashi ended up dating in your last year at high school. He was away for university by then and missed the two of you terribly, but at least your togetherness meant he could meet you both at the same time whenever he visited home! That’s double the time spent with both of you!
And when you and Akaashi graduated, you both got into universities in Tokyo, meaning Bokuto’s happiness only increased. Nothing could ever separate you now-
“Me and Keiji both got job offers here in Tokyo!”
For a second, he grinned widely at the great news, his hair pointed sharply to the sky. Then, slowly, he realised he had just accepted an invitation to play for the Black Jackals, who were stationed in Osaka. His hair melted into sadness, along with his whole demeanour.
You felt Akaashi tense beside you, his hand squeezing yours a little tighter while you pursed your lips, having handled this for much longer than your boyfriend.
“But I’ll be working in Osaka,” Bokuto reminded you, his sadness dripping from every syllable.
“It’s not even three hours with the Shinkansen, Bokuto-san,” Akaashi informed him. Naturally, he had made some calculations before giving this news.
Bokuto nodded and gave you a sorrowful smile. The rest of his expression was hardly working with him to convince you that he was okay, but he tried his best. “I just thought you two would both be freelancers and go wherever I go.”
You couldn’t help the small snort of laughter that slipped past your nose, making you lift a hand to try and conceal it. Akaashi smiled and stepped forward when he saw that Bokuto was about to tell you off. “Bokuto-san. I promise to take care of your sister.”
“I know that, Akaashi. But who’s going to take care of me? Who’s going to hold up the posters with my name at every game?”
Akaashi hesitated, looking a bit like a question mark when he answered. “Your other fans?”
Bokuto huffed and pouted. “They don’t count.”
“If I filmed that and posted it, you’d get cancelled so fast,” you mumbled from the side, already fed up with your brother’s nonsense (affectionately).
“You’re not taking my emotions seriously!” Bokuto accused you, which sounded exactly like it did when you were kids.
You stuck your tongue out at him. “Because everything will be fine!”
“It will?” Bokuto’s movements stuttered as he blinked at you owlishly, a nostalgic sense of positivity washing over him.
“Of course it will!” you repeated, voice a little lighter. A little more relaxed, like the words were filling the air and hugging all three of you. “We always work things out.”
Akaashi felt his shoulders lower as he admired you. You were everything he needed to fight his anxiety, and you proved time and time again that you were it for him.
It also seemed to have the same effect on Bokuto, who knew from all the years of sitting on the back of your bike while you gave your all trying to get him home after he scraped his knee, that you would do everything in your power to ensure it would, in fact, be okay.
“I already got us all rail passes for the whole year,” you said happily, shrugging. “Can you start being happy about our awesome jobs now?”
Bokuto used his strong arms to pull you and your boyfriend into a crushing hug, making you both groan despite the warmth in your hearts. “Oh my gosh, congratulations! What are your jobs?”
You nodded your head to gesture for Akaashi to start. “I’ll be an editor for Tenma Udai...”
“The mangaka?! Why didn’t you say that?!”
“…My bad, Bokuto-san.”

★ need a ride?
☾ aemond targaryen x top m reader
𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘴 ⛥ 2.04k
cw: very subby aemond, dom top m reader, riding, one spank, mean reader, begging, daddy kink, dacryphilia, sort of humping, the L word but you don't really mean it (love) though it's not implied enough, written with an age gap in mind
To have one of the princes of the Seven Kingdoms on your cock regularly was a privilege. What you've done with that is declare that you prefer him riding you over fucking him, just because of how pathetic it makes him. This time, you make him face away from you, tall, pale body tilted towards a mirror in front of your bed.
Aemond is more focused on the movement than the mirror, but if he looked, he'd find that your sight is more focused on what's in front of you, of course, his ass and the way it ripples every time he slams down hard.
It's rare, though. He's uncoordinated, a mess teetering on the edge of release, just waiting for your command. Seeing your cock disappear into his hole is pleasure enough, though.
"Please, daddy." Aemond sobs. Both eyes cry.
"Please what, sweet prince?" You tear your eyes away from his ass to watch him in the mirror, to watch how the tears stream down his cheeks and how his nose is wrinkled.
Aemond is usually fierce, usually aggressive, so ready to become a usurper, and he's crying on your cock.
"I–" Aemond shakes his head, hands gripping the sheets in front of him. He can't find the words, not between sobs and sharp inhales.
When your hand comes down upon his ass with a sharp slap, it shocks him out of his sobs. "Fuck!"
"Calm down, Prince Aemond." You call in a calm tone he'd find mocking if his mind were with him.
From a pit in your heart you do not often find in you, you grant him mercy, letting him take a break.
He moans when you grab his hips and make his take you whole, but leave him there. "What is it that makes you cry?"
Aemond moves to wipe his cheeks, but you catch the movement in the mirror and stop him; partly because you like the way he looks with his cheeks wet and, "Don't rub your cheeks raw, sweetheart. Just talk to me."
"'S good, daddy." Aemond says weakly. You're proud, at least, that he doesn't stutter.
"So why are you sorrowful?" Your hands rub circles into his hips, and that has them shuddering, rubbing your cock inside of him.
"I am not." He denies vehemently, shaking his head. His eyes finally meet yours through the mirror. "It's–they're happy tears. I think."
"Mm, that kind?" You hum.
Your low voice invokes a reaction in Aemond. He squirms a little on his knees. "Yes."
"Then what is it you plead for?" His mouth opens to speak, but you continue, "You have everything you could want. You have my cock, you have pleasure, you have Vhagar, you're a prince, you're wealthy."
"I–" So it wasn't just the crying that was stopping him from talking. He hiccups suddenly.
"You're embarrassed. Is that it, sweet prince?"
He nods his head just barely.
"Speak your mind." Your voice is commanding. His eyes shy away from yours. "We have known each other intimately, inside and out. You can barely stand being clothed around me. You bare yourself to me often. Surely that must merit a loose tongue."
"Please fuck me, daddy. I need that, I need it, please." He begs so sweetly.
When you give no response, he tries to turn around, but you swing him right back with hands on his shoulders. You click your tongue, and the combination of all that–your cock still in him, the disappointed sound, the manhandling–makes him flinch. "I did tell you that I wanted you to ride me, yes?"
Confusion spreads across Aemond's features along with some kind of hurt at not being able to see you outside of your reflection. "Yes?"
"Yes, who?" You ask roughly, slapping one of his dreadfully pale asscheek just to get a reaction.
"Yes, daddy!" Aemond practically wails.
"And you will do whatever your daddy wishes you to do, won't you?" You didn't even wait for him to reply, because it would matter little to you. "I told you what I wanted, and you didn't object. You do not get to change your mind now, boy."
"I–"
Your hand lays on his pale asscheek, and that reminds Aemond of, though he might not be able to see it, his other now red, stinging cheek. It shocks him into obedience. "Yes, daddy."
"There you are." You raise your hands up to hold his hips gently, a big contrast from how you handled him earlier. "Go on then, sweetheart."
Eyelids snap shut over violet and scarred blue eyes as Aemond gets back into a rhythm, or as best a rhythm as he can muster.
Riding you makes him feel like you're splitting him open, which he should like–love, even–but the movement makes his thighs burn and his knees ache.
He can't deny, though, that it feels fucking good. His gummy walls clench around your cock just to feel you more.
Aemond's bad at this, but he doesn't even realize it.
You do, plain as day. He's slow, never consistent, he finishes too quickly.
You do kind of like how sloppy he is, and how it takes him so long that your cock'll stretch him gaping. What he lacks in skill he makes up for in effort, and you know he'll always want to please daddy. Your praise misleads him.
You grasp his cheeks in both hands, making him gasp, and then you guide him. "Like that, sweetheart."
It's fruitless, as when you let go, he continues at his own pace. It's amusing, anyway, to see his face scrunch up with effort, truly believing he is doing as you asked.
"Yeah," You coo, hands settling back onto his hips and rubbing, "you got it."
You can see sweat trails on his back.
Aemond's giving riding your cock his all. He's always particularly enjoyed being full, and he wants that now. You'd call it milking. Redness burns in his cheeks.
Nevermind what you'd call it, Aemond wants it. He doubles his efforts, wanting it before, or even while, he cums himself.
He clenches the sheets, knuckles ghostly white against his already pale skin.
He can feel it, coiling up in his stomach. It's like dragonfire, the way it spreads throughout his body and excites him.
Aemond rides you faster after that, chasing his release. He wants it. Wants it, wants it, wants it.
The dragonfire turns to ash as a real fire burns, making his limbs ache.
"I can't." Aemond breathes out, out of breath with a dry tongue. Exhaustion makes itself evident the same way as pleasure did, spreading from his core to his knees to his arms. When he speaks next, there's a sob, "Daddy, I can't."
"What do you mean you can't, sweetheart?" You ask, pressing a thumb against the base of his spine.
There's sweat there, a thick sheen. "I'm–"
"Exhausted?" You click your tongue, and the burning shame of disappointment accompanies Aemond's exhaustion. "You've barely been on my cock for an hour, sweet boy."
"Please." Aemond begs. He slides his body down, pressing his chest to the sheets and arching his back; still on your cock and still on his knees, but you can see how they're about to give.
He's presenting himself to you, showing you what you can have.
"You can do it, Aemond. You've done it a thousand times before."
Aemond shakes his head. He doesn't even care for the way it makes him rub his sweat and tears onto the mattress below him. "Not this time, daddy please."
"Get up."
"Daddy–"
"I said get up."
He obeys, upper half lifting off the bed in a struggle. His calf slides out from under his knee in an effort to stand, but you grasp it harshly.
"I said get up, not stand. Turn." You almost regard him like someone that needs taking care of constantly. "Turn around now."
Aemond does so, gladly, happy to see your face even with the tears blurring his vision and even if he has to slip off your dick. You pull him further to straddle your hips.
"You," You begin, grabbing a handful of his hair to tuck his wet face into your neck. His chest presses against yours. "will keep going, and you will continue until I finish, you understand?"
"Y-Yes, daddy." His voice is shaky.
"Say it like you mean it. I've made this easier for you, I'm holding you up, you've got me to hold onto, and you'll be rubbing your cock right against me like a dog. So again, say it like you mean it, Aemond."
"Yes, daddy." Aemond says. You can hear it in his voice that he understands what you're giving him and that he's grateful. You're right, of course you're right. "Thank you, daddy."
He rolls his hips, a whole lot better than the bouncing he was attempting earlier, not for feeling but for how much less work it takes.
Pressed so close against you, sweaty skin against sweaty skin, with each roll of his hips he's pressing his dick against you. It's not intentional, just a byproduct of the proximity, but before long it becomes intentional.
He humps you more than rolls his hips, losing his mind in the pleasure. That slick feeling of his pre and your sweat making it good and easier only reminds him of Sylvi.
That only makes him feel better, imagining it.
Aemond moans, but it turns into a gasp when your fingers thread through his hair, stuck together with sweat.
"What did I tell you?"
His mind is lost to him, so he answers literally, "That you–you've made it easier."
You chuckle, "Well, haven't I?"
"Yes." Aemond breathes out. He doesn't even need you to correct him or ask, "Yes it does, daddy. It's so good, daddy. Thank you, thank you."
When he rolls his hips, it's shallow, barely rising up, but it feels good anyway. It's more about being full, taking his daddy's cock like he's made for it.
He already knows he'll be sore in the morning, hole melded to the shape of your cock.
His thighs burn again, but this time he'll get over it. It feels too good to give up.
You cradle him like he's entirely yours, a warm, guiding hand on the small of his back and another on the back of his head, keeping him against you. It's almost like you care for him.
You can still see his back, through the mirror. He rolls his hips too softly for it to be a sight, but you can still see the effort he puts into it. Furthermore, you can watch your cock disappear in and out of him, watch the way it stretches him, how it almost looks like he's sucking you in. That is what turns you on.
"Keep it going, sweetheart." You whisper into his ear.
"Yes, daddy."
You place a tender kiss at the top of Aemond's head and he shudders.
He's darn beautiful, he is. Clean shaven, everywhere. No hair on his arms, his chest or his legs. You know that special little attention to the cleanliness of his shaved hole is for you, too.
Outside of dragons, death and politics, he is rather sweet, you suppose; and no one else knows.
His lips grow apart, looser the closer he gets to release.
It's hot against your neck, your sweat and the remains of his tears, his everconstant pants, the overabundance of his messy hair.
He can't keep still, neither his hips nor his head. Sometimes his teeth find your skin, sharp like a preadator's. He'd never bite down, anyhow. Doesn't have the mind to.
"Daddy?"
"Yeah?"
You'd been too caught up with thinking about how he was all yours, and with his cute little backside, that you didn't notice he was so close.
"There you go. Love you, yeah?" You murmur, pressing your nose to the top of his head.
Aemond can barely moan a "cumming–!" before he's finishing all over your front. He slumps right over his own mess in exhaustion, breaths slowing as he relaxes.
He think it's all over, blissed out as he is. He forgot his own promise.
Aemond hums deliriously, "Hm? Oh, love you too."
You flip the two of you over, ready to have your way, as Aemond had before. You hadn't finished yet, after all. He'd understand.
"Wait, daddy–!"

NCT DREAM Reaction: You Sleepily Confess to Them Without Realizing It
Navigation
Mark
He freezes. Like… full system shutdown. You mumble, “Mark… I like you so much…” and he just STARES. He debates waking you up but decides against it. Instead, he spends the rest of the night lying awake, overthinking. The next morning, he’s acting completely normal… except he keeps blushing whenever he looks at you. Eventually, he awkwardly blurts, “Sooo, uh… do you remember what you said last night?”
Renjun
The moment he hears you mumble, “Renjun, you’re so pretty,” he smirks. He doesn’t wake you up, but the next day, he casually leans in and goes, “So… I’m pretty, huh? You like me, huh?” He’s enjoying watching you freak out, but don’t worry—he definitely likes you too.
Jeno
He was half asleep himself until he heard you murmur, “Jeno is so handsome… I wanna kiss him…” BOOM. He’s wide awake. He stares at you, ears turning red, completely unsure what to do. He ends up just lying there, internally screaming. The next day, he’s a little shyer around you, but when you ask why, he just shakes his head with a tiny smile.
Haechan
The biggest menace. You mumble, “Haechan, I love you… but you’re so annoying…” and he grins like he just won the lottery. The next morning, he dramatically sighs, “So, you LOVE me, huh?” He’s teasing you endlessly, smirking every time you get flustered. But later, when you least expect it, he’ll quietly say, “Good. Because I love you too.”
Jaemin
He hears you mumble, “Jaemin… you’re my favorite person…” and immediately melts. He watches you for a second, debating waking you up just to hear it again. Instead, he gently tucks your blanket around you, smiling to himself. The next morning, he’s extra soft with you, randomly patting your head and saying, “You’re my favorite person too.”
Chenle
The second you mumble, “Chenle, you make me so happy…” he BURSTS out laughing. Not because he’s making fun of you, but because he finds it so cute. The next day, he’s grinning at you nonstop. “You must’ve slept well last night,” he says casually. When you ask why, he just smirks. “Oh, no reason.”
Jisung
Poor Jisung.exe has crashed. You mumble, “Jisung, I have such a big crush on you…” and he just STARES at the ceiling, face burning. He’s too flustered to do anything, so he just awkwardly lies there. The next morning, he avoids eye contact until you finally ask what’s wrong. He stammers, “Uh… do you… remember what you said?” If you don’t, he’s both relieved and a little disappointed.

Day four of February’s second weekly WIP behind the cut; “mistaken identities and interdimensional refugees”. (( chrono || non-chrono ))
“You ran really fast, like I’ve never seen anybody not a Flash run that fast, like I think you might’ve actually been faster than Jai and Irey and like my dad just flies when he’s moving that fast!” Jon rambles, kicking his feet against the bottom of his seat and seeming excited again, and Kon doesn’t really have the heart to interrupt him. The kid doesn’t seem as freaked-out or scared as he did before, so if spending the drive raving about watching a giant croco-dude get his shit rocked is enough to distract him from worrying about what’s going on, Kon’s not gonna cut him off.
Just it’s–weird, kinda. The version of Jon he’s used to is a much quieter, more reserved guy, and he’s never known the dude well enough to figure out if he’s holding back or masking his reactions or if he’s actually just like that. The whole “volcano-trauma” thing would imply the former, but Clark doesn’t even seem to think Jon’s all that fucked-up from it, so, like . . . maybe he was quiet like that as a kid too?
Or maybe, like, Clark is once again totally failing to see somebody else in an “S” being, like . . . fucked-up and needing help themselves for once.
Not that Kon would know anything about that, or anything.
Like, definitely Batman’s version of you don’t get to fuck up in this line of work is a lot harsher-looking, and definitely it’s not soft by any fucking stretch of the imagination, but it sure as fuck was a day when Kon’d first had the thought that Batman expects the other Bats to live up to standards that he’s spent weeks and months and years personally teaching them, and Clark kinda just . . . expects other Supers to be up to Superman-standards, but not in a way where he really ever, like . . . taught them those standards. Like–they were just supposed to fucking know, apparently? Like that’s a thing they all just came pre-installed with no matter how they got made or where they grew up?
Also, Clark literally never taught him a fucking thing about his powers, and not really Kara either as far as he knows, and sure as shit didn’t give Kenan or even Mae and Linda back in the day all that many tips or whatever, and it’s like . . . at least Batman fucking tells people what he expects. Like, mostly, anyway. Batman has fucking dossiers of what he expects.
Maybe Jon got that, though. Got–told shit. Like, found out what the fucking standards actually were before they were immediately relevant or it was already too late or they were getting a disappointed lecture over shit they hadn’t known even mattered, much less mattered enough to be a fucking problem.
Or like, how literally any of the goddamn Kryptonian powers worked.
There’s a reason that Kon runs like a speedster; a reason that a very significant chunk of the fighting techniques and tactics that he knows are Greek or Bat in origin, if they’re not either Cadmus-uploads or tips he got from Guardian when they were working together back in the day.
Or, like, that he got from Knockout, but “yeah I think that throw came from Granny Goodness” is, like, not a conversation he’s ever wanted to have with anyone.
There’s also a reason that most of the shit he says that people assume he got from Superman he got from Ma and Pa in the, like . . . two lousy years he spent getting in their way at the farm, not Clark. Mostly he doesn’t repeat the “lessons” he heard from Clark, because he doesn’t like remembering how shitty he felt hearing them and really doesn’t wanna make anyone else feel that shitty either.
It’s whatever, anyway. The League doesn’t really cross the streams or whatever, but the Titans have learned a little from each other, and Young Justice has learned a little more from each other. That’s all. Comes from, like, actually growing up together or whatever, he’s always figured. The Leaguers didn’t team up ‘til they were all real stuck in their ways, and they built the League around those ways, pretty much. And like, whatever, they’re the greatest heroes on the planet.
But also if somebody told him he had to pick a speedster for a stealth mission, he’d definitely pick Bart or Wally over Barry Allen.
Kon is really letting his brain run off on a fucking tangent here, but in his defense, it kind of feels like self-defense right now. It's think too much about shit he can't change and never could've or it's think about a version of Jon grinning up at him like he's the coolest thing he's ever seen, like he's–like he–
The kid thinks he's his fucking dad, Kon reminds himself harshly. He doesn't know who the fuck he is. Hell, he apparently doesn't even have a version of him in his reality. So like–obviously he thinks it's cool to see his “dad” fist-fight a crocodile dude in the middle of a fucking interdimensional crisis. Like–obviously, yeah. Very much so obviously.
He's not seeing . . . anyone else when he sees him.
Anything else.
Like–the kid's just seeing his dad. Not his . . . anything else.
Well, his own Jon doesn't see him as anything else either, so that's pretty SOP either way.

just felt the need to remind everyone that the whole potter stinks saga is a rarity in the hp books in that it's an extremely successful Draco scheme: it doesn't end with Harry triumphing, no one gets punishment and Draco doesn't milk the joke until it's not funny anymore.
Like, the badges are introduced, used to great effect until the "Harry loves Hermione" Skeeter article drops (and Draco gets new material for his pigtail pulling) and people stop wearing them gradually after the first triwizard tournament task, the end. The badges are widely adopted, never confiscated or otherwise punished and no one ever succeeds in changing what they say (though the only people who try are the Creeveys, who are significantly younger); it's one success after another for Draco.
And what does Draco do with them? An elaborate pigtail pulling ritual:
This is how the badges are introduced, notice how Draco goes for the least subtle approach possible, like, he straight up draws Harry's attention to them, again
and again
and again.
The Slytherin as a whole do this too and a large part of the student body wears the badges as well
and
and
but it's not them Harry's thinking of when he imagines the humiliation he'd receive if he refused to perform at the tournament
No, in this worst case scenario Harry disappoints someone he cares about (Hagrid) and someone in a position of authority (Ludo), confirms people's low opinion of him (Fleur), makes a rival overjoyed (Karkaroff) and... Draco is also there.
Like, this hypothetical Draco is not crowing about Harry's failure, he's not even performing for a crowd, he's right front and center and he's flashing the badge in a way that is clearly visible to imaginary Harry, not to the imaginary crowd, in a way that is reminiscent of how real Draco has been behaving so far. Draco, it seems, is there to remind Harry that he really does stink, not other people.
All in all, this is a complete success for Draco: he's taken Harry down a peg, got some sweet sweet recognition from his fellow students and carved himself a place in Harry's mind. So, like, pigtails successfully pulled, I guess
especially considering the fact that Harry somehow acquired one of the stupid badges AND KEPT IT for 3 years.
#btw Draco clearly prepared for all eventualities since attempting to transfigure the badges to say something else results in them changing#from POTTER STINKS to POTTER REALLY STINKS#he really put in the work#the drarry of it all#drarry#the blorger special#hp meta adjacent

Gwyn’s pov.
Next week came, but the Shadowsinger did not.
Gwyn had been waiting for almost an hour at their usual meet up spot in one of the sitting rooms in the House of Wind, having snagged a book from the library to flip through as she waited.
She had been excited for the meet up, to say the least. She couldn’t stop wondering where he was going to take her this time after going to the restaurant the previous week. The thought had kept her up all night as she twisted and turned in her sheets.
She had gone the extra mile while getting dressed up too, picking out the teal sweater Azriel had once mentioned made her eyes look brighter. Under that, she wore a pencil skirt with tights, having seen one of the females in Velaris wear something similar. She had thought the female looked pretty, and wanted to see what she looked like in it herself.
She continued to flip the pages of the book, reading and reading, smiling at the words. The story was cute, one of a female who was trying to save her family with the help of her siblings and friends, one of them being her love interest. The banter, the softness they shared made Gwyn long for a similar connection, if not more.
She loved the male love interest a lot, and the fact that he was so similar to one of her own friends did not go unnoticed by Gwyn.
Maybe she will have her own love story one day, with the friend she liked more than she should.
More than friends should like each other.
But with each moment that passed, her eyes stopped reading, and remained unseeing. The tilt of her lips fading as she got lost in her own head. She stared down at the soft, crinkling pages, running her fingers over the edges. They were painted in beautiful shades, depicting a scenery of a mountain from the book.
Pretty.
But not pretty enough to distract her from the absence of a certain Shadowsinger.
Footsteps drew Gwyn from her reverie, and she perked up, her gaze lading on the doors she had left ajar. Hope bloomed in her gut, even as she knew it was not the one she had been expecting coming closer to her.
The footsteps were too heavy, too powerful, to be his.
Still, she waited, she watched, she wished.
She hoped.
And a moment later, Cassian strutted into view, a smile gracing his face when he realised Gwyn was in the room. She returned the smile, willing her disappointment to vanish.
“Gwyn! Good seeing you here!” He paused behind the couch adjacent to the one Gwyn sat on. “I thought you might be down in Velaris, this is a pleasant surprise.”
Gwyn sighed, relaxing into the soft cushions behind her. “Yeah, I thought so too.”
His brows furrowed, and he quickly glanced around the room. “Where’s Az?”
She shrugged, setting the book aside and pushing to her feet. “I don’t know. Maybe he’s busy?”
Cassian’ confusion was palpable as he huffed. “He can never be busy enough to put off your dates.”
“We don’t go on dates.” Gwyn scowled. “They are outings.”
He simply smirked in return, lifting his hands in a placating gesture. “Sure, right. My bad.”
Gwyn’s eyes narrowed as she watched him walk over to the balcony, dusting off her skirt absentmindedly. “Are you going somewhere?”
He glanced back at her, nodding. “Nesta’s at the river house with Feyre and Nyx. Gonna go pick her up.”
Gwyn chewed on her lip as she thought, then her eyes shot to him. “Hey Cass?”
“Hmm?”
“Can you take me down to the city?”
This time he turned to her fully, his brows high on his forehead. “I…what?”
Gwyn rolled her eyes, ignoring the new sadness taking root in her chest at the lack of those playful shadows and their quiet master’s presence. “Do you not want to?”
He took a step forward before pausing, extending his hand. “Oh no, no I would love to. I am just surprised, that’s all.”
Gwyn raised an eyebrow, but moved closer to him to let him pick her up. By this point, she was comfortable enough with him that the spike of fear and anxiety no longer pierced her heart when he was in close proximity to her, and it was just another thing she was proud of herself for.
He gently wound his arms under her knees and back, careful to only touch her where needed, and flapped his wings once. There was a reason the house built in the mountain was called the House of Wind, because as soon as he lifted from the ground, a powerful gust of wind caught under his wings and sent them soaring. He glided smoothly, his wing muscles beating effortlessly. Five centuries of flying practice truly showed in his skills.
Gwyn had once studied about wings and how they work, reading extensively about Illyrian ones. They had been so fascinating to her then, as they were fascinating to her now. The way they moved always had her mesmerized. Every time she flew with Azriel too, she would either always stare at his wings or the city down below.
Azriel.
Gwyn looked away from Cassian’s wings, instead casting her gaze downwards, towards the ground that rapidly grew closer as he descended. His feet touched the ground with a light thump before he bent slightly and set Gwyn on her feet.
“Are you sure about this, Gwyn?”
She turned to him, nodding. “I am. We go out every week so I can get accustomed to socialising once more.” And just because Gwyn was feeling petty, she added. “I’m not going to mess up my routine just because someone cannot be bothered to inform me before standing me up.”
Cassian’s lips parted, but then he closed them with an amused smirk. “Very proud of you, Gwyn.”
Though his expression was teasing, his words sounded so genuine they nearly brought Gwyn to tears.
“Thank you, Cass.”
“I will likely be here for an hour or two, depending on Nyx’s mood and who he is currently attached to today, so you can just come to the River House if you want to go back.” He clasped her shoulder, smiling. “And even if I’m up there, you can just ask Rhys to get me, yeah?”
Gwyn nodded gratefully. “Of course, thank you again.”
She waited until Cassian had turned away, waving in farewell as he climbed up the steps to one of the majestic houses of the High Lord.
Then she turned, and began wandering down the street.
She gazed at everything she passed by, unwilling to miss even a moment of the sheer beauty of Velaris. The shimmering waters of the Sidra, the golden shadows casted by the dying sun across the ground and the flora, the faelights bobbing gently over the entrances to shops and restaurants. Hawkers selling their wares, fruit stalls next to dessert stalls.
She walked without a destination in mind, her hand bent at a slight angle towards her thigh - where she had strapped her dagger under her skirt- involuntarily, the action muscle memory at this point.
She was lost in thought, wondering what could have been so important that Azriel had not even bothered to inform her. It could have been that he was on an important mission, and that he had no way to contact her. It could have been that he had almost completely forgotten.
Gwyn didn’t know. But she did know that she was mad, and she would not forgive him until he had grovelled enough.
The moment she had the thought, guilt followed. What if he truly was busy and if he had taken time off to send her a letter, he could have been in danger?
She shook her head, trying to dislodge the thought as she glanced around her. She felt tired already, so bored out of her mind without him. She had no idea what she even wanted to do anymore. It would have been better if she had stayed home and completed her projects for Merrill.
Home.
It was such a beautiful, comforting word. The word that had meant nothing to Gwyn for years after her sister was taken from her. It was just that, a word. No meaning, no feelings.
But for quite some time now, since she had met Nesta, since the day Gwyn had dragged herself to the training ring, telling herself over and over that she would be fine, better even, that Cassan would not hurt her, that he wasn’t that kind of a male, a male pathetic enough to force females to feel better about his own self, the word had taken on a new meaning.
Gwyn had learned that home meant more than just four walls and a roof. Home meant friends. Home meant laughing over trivial things, freely and loudly. Home meant warmth.
Home meant Azriel.
She didn’t know when, or how, but slowly, he had become the definition of friend, the laughter, the warmth that made a home, home.
And slowly, the intimidating, lonely walls that had kept her from the scary outside world became so much more.
It was almost dark, the horizon tinting darker and darker with each passing moment, when Gwyn stumbled upon the restaurant that Azriel had taken her to the previous week.
She smiled at the sight of those pristine walls, the memories that surfaced threatening to make her giggle. She walked on, passing by the entrance, the beautiful stars leading up to it.
And she caught a whiff of the smell she had become so familiar with.
It caused her bones to freeze, her muscles stiffening as she turned her head to look.
The interior was still dark, so different compared to the outside. Soft aroma of chicken, rice, herbs, everything drifted out, mixing into such a sweet smell that it would be impossible to not go in.
But yet, under that, was the smell of cedar, of night, of shadows.
Gwyn’s eyes narrowed, and she had only taken a step up the stairs when she saw him.
Past the reception, past a number of tables and chairs and candles, he sat.
At the same spot he had sat with Gwyn.
With the same smile on his face, his eyes soft. His hand under his chin, his lips tilted as he nodded.
At a female. The chair Gwyn had occupied merely seven days ago was now occupied by a female.
She looked like a complete opposite of her.
Curly blonde hair piled spilled down her shoulders, her eyes and skin the prettiest shade of brown. Her figure was curvy, soft, sweet. So unlike Gwyn.
The female wore a strapless tight fitting dress, the material clinging to her like a second skin.
She looked so comfortable, so confident, Gwyn wondered why she ever thought she even stood a chance with Azriel. Of course he’d be interested in someone who was confident in herself, someone who wasn’t afraid to know and show she was pretty.
His words from the previous week floated around in her head amidst the confusion and hurt, solidifying her new beliefs.
“So you like it?”
“Of course I like it! Anyone would love this place. It is so beautiful.”
Had she been only a friend who he wanted the opinion of to impress the female he was actually interested in? Just a guinea pig?
Gwyn’s eyes prickled, and she took a step away, as if simply the sight of Azriel touching the other female’s hand - smiling secretively, his eyes hooded and seductive- would burn her.
Yet she couldn’t look away, not until someone bumped into her shoulder, apologising profusely. She didn’t even look at the fae. She bowed her head in acknowledgement before willing her legs to move. Hoping to leave before Azriel’s shadows - who for some reason were so attuned to her every move that she would find them anywhere she went - reported her presence to their master.
She moved through the thickening crowds, laughing children and flirting adults. Kept pushing herself to walk, to run, back to the River House. She needed to go back. She knew she could not handle any interactions, especially one with Azriel if he found her before she could drown herself in work.
Just when the house came into sight, she slowed down, blinking hard and regulating her breathing. She could see activity inside the house, soft warm light spilling onto the grass under the windows and the porch leading up to the main door, which opened just as she went to knock.
“Gwyn?” Nesta stared at her wide eyed, brows high in surprise.
“Um, hey Nesta.” Gwyn swallowed uneasily.
Instantly, Nesta was alert. “What happened? Did someone do something? Where’s Azriel?”
“Oh, I forgot to tell you Nes. I think Az forgot about their date and Gwyn went into the city alone.” Cassian’s voice answered before Gwyn could, and for that she was grateful, as she wasn’t feeling particularly excited to speak.
Nesta’s eyes hardened as she glanced at her mate. “He mentioned he was going out with a female. Did he not inform you? ” She turned to glare at Gwyn. “And even if he forgot, why the hell did you-”
“Nesta, she is not a child.”
Gwyn’s blood went hot, anger simmering through each vein as she realised he really was on a date. And he had told Nesta, but not her.
She would kill him.
Nesta opened her mouth to speak, then seemed to think the better of it and just pulled Gwyn into a hug. “What happened, Gwyn? Why do you look so spooked?”
Gwyn shook her head as best as she could in her friend’s embrace, her heart finally slowing down slightly at the comforting touch. “Nothing, really. I just got a bit… anxious, that’s all. I just want to go back up.”
Nesta pulled away, nodding and turned to Cassian. “Drop her off at the house please, I can wait.”
“Nesta- no-”
The glare Gwyn received in return was enough to shut her up as Cassian picked her into his arms like she weighed nothing, then shot into the sky.
“She really is scary sometimes, no?”
Gwyn huffed, her lips tilting in a surprised smile. “She was mad when we first met too.”
He laughed, his chest vibrating against Gwyn’s upper arm as she kept her arms folded close to her chest. He quieted after that, his focus solely on the mountain that loomed over them.
He flew towards the main sitting room, which they all used most of the time, as far as Gwyn knew.
But he was not Azriel, and the sitting room was not close to the library.
Just another reminder of how considerate, how attentive Azriel had always been to her. Of how he forgot about her today.
But no, she wouldn’t spend her day thinking about him anymore. Not when he couldn’t even bother to let her know he was going on a real date.
That he was ditching her for the one who he actually wanted.
She bid a goodbye to Cassian, not waiting to see him fly off before she retreated to the dorm she shared with her fellow priestesses, pulling out the large tomes she had been assigned to read through and summarise.
But she knew she wouldn’t be able to focus.
Not with him occupying her thoughts.
Az's pov
Something was wrong.
Azriel had considered many things in order to understand what was bothering him so much.
Last night's mission had gone fine; the female he had to seduce to get important intel an easy one to flirt with to get her to talk, even when his entire being had recoiled at his sweet talking and his suggestive touches. Even his shadows had felt uncomfortable and had hissed after every few minutes of the interaction. But it had been a necessity for his job, his duty towards his court. The accomplishment of this mission should have filled him with relief and a sense of freedom from something he had felt reluctant towards from the start. But still…
Rhys and Feyre had thanked him for the information he had gathered that day. Azriel didn't need their thanks for having done something that was expected of him, although having the validation of his High Lord and Lady had been nice. But still…
Something was wrong.
You know what, one of his shadows whispered. The only one that had bothered speaking to him since his mission with that female. All the others were still oddly silent, leaving that one - the same one which had always favoured Gwyn since they all met her - to occasionally use its voice to throw some scathing comments at him.
Azriel sighed after one of his daggers hit one of the dummies in the training ring.
“Yes. I know,” he muttered, even with no one but the moon and his silent shadows to hear him.
At least he thought.
Footsteps sounded at the doorway, before the source of Azriel’s troubled mind walked onto the training area. An intense wave of emotion washed over him; hope, relief, joy, excitement…awe.
Gwyn looked breathtaking under the starry sky, the night making her look even more fierce as she walked determinedly to the weapons rack clad in skin tight leathers.
Azriel stood still for a moment, unable to move as he watched his shadows - every single one of them - rush to her. Gwyn giggled at their excited dance around her. He heard her whisper something to them but couldn't make out what it was. He mentally called for his shadows to come back to him. None listened.
“Uh… hey,” he finally blurted out.
Gwyn turned to him then. Azriel felt a heavy weight drop in his stomach at the apathetic look in her eyes. His heart constricted with fear and worry, so much that he immediately began walking towards her.
“What happe-”
“Hi,” she cut his question off. Her dry tone stopped him in his tracks.
“Are you alright?”
Something flickered in her eyes for a second before she turned her back to him, took a deep breath in, then out, and picked up a few daggers from the rack.
“I'm fine,” she gritted out without looking at him.
Azriel frowned in confusion.
The hell she was.
He hadn't seen her at training this morning, hadn't caught a single glimpse of her anywhere for the entire day, hadn't heard the sound of her voice. And now that she was here before him, the usual light missing from her eyes and her posture stiff as though from restraint, she dared say that she was fine?
Gwyn walked past him, his shadows trailing behind, and stopped a distance away from the dummies in which the daggers he had thrown earlier were still embedded.
He followed.
“You can lie to anyone about this, Gwyn, but you can't deceive me.”
Her first dagger flew and landed in a dummy's throat. She let out a humorless laugh.
“Is this tonight's lesson then? Lies and deception?”
She threw another dagger, this one lodging itself in the centre of the dummy's chest.
Azriel looked at Gwyn from head to toe, hoping to find answers to the growing mystery unfolding before him. He desperately wished to know what was happening to her. He needed to make her feel better. Azriel needed his Gwyn back.
“Gwyn please,” he took a few steps until he stood right in front of her. His shadows remained closer to her. “What is happening?”
The sadness that darkened her eyes as she looked at him made him feel like the dummy, this invisible weapon sinking straight into his heart. It twisted deeper inside him with the tears that he noticed pooling in her eyes.
He brought a hand up and cupped her cheek. “My Gwyn,” he whispered, unaware that it had made it out of his mouth.
Her teal eyes fixed on his hazel ones, searching. For what, he did not know? But he was certain that he was ready to give her anything. Before he could give in to the urge to pull her into his arms, anger flashed on her face.
She grabbed his wrist and pulled his hand away.
“Don't,” she said as she put more distance between them.
Azriel didn't hear what she murmured to his shadows due to the beating of his heart resonating in his ears and which drowned out every other sound. He didn't even acknowledge them slithering back to him. He only watched Gwyn run away and disappear through the doorway.
Azriel stood there, frozen and stunned. Until he felt his shadows smack him in the face, their shadowy forms conveniently solid for a task like this.
Idiot master, hissed the one shadow.
Is that all you have to say? He scowled at it. What would have been more helpful was if they told him what was wrong and how he could fix things with Gwyn. But that was apparently not in their plans.
I'm going with her, was all it said before it floated away. The others stayed. They remained silent, leaving Azriel alone with his thoughts.
The conversation - or was it an argument? He wasn't sure - replayed over and over in his head, even as he descended the stairs down into the House of Wind. He was so distracted that he didn't notice Cassian until he almost crashed into the chair he sat in at the living room table.
“Whoa! You alright here brother?” Cass asked, his mouth full of the cake he had a huge slice of on his plate.
Azriel pulled the chair next to Cassian and sat down. He pulled Cassian’s plate towards him and snatched his fork right out of his hand.
“I'm fine,” he said. He winced at the memory of those same words coming from Gwyn. The dread he hadn't realised he had been feeling worsened at the mere thought of her name.
He dug into Cassian's midnight snack, shoving a forkful of cake into his mouth.
“You don't have anything to do with Gwyn rushing down the stairs to the library like the house is on fire do you?” Cassian stared at him with raised brows.
Azriel looked at him. “What…?” was all he managed to ask with his full mouth.
What is happening to her, to us? What did I do? How do I fix this?
His shadows still remained silent.
Cassian stared at him while rubbing his chin.
“Listen, I'm only asking because she hasn't seemed well since she went out alone yesterday.”
Azriel suddenly felt like he was swallowing stones. “What?” he asked incredulously.
What is he talking about?
His shadows did not answer him again. But Cassian thankfully did.
“She insisted that she didn’t mind you missing one of your dates,” he put the last word between air quotes, “but her face told another story.”
Cassian kept talking, telling him how Gwyn had looked when she had joined them at the River House after.
Something clicked inside him. The fork he held fell on the table, its clatter echoing in the room.
Finally, his shadows muttered collectively.
“You're more dense than I thought.” Cassian shook his head, disappointment lacing his words as he dragged the plate back to him.
Azriel’s eyes widened. His heart pounded in his chest. His mind raced in panic.
He fucked up. And now he was paying for it, he realised. He needed to fix this. He had to if he wanted Gwyn back. And Azriel was willing to do anything.

Perturabo’s child is not going to have a fun childhood (courtesy of their grumpy, perfectionist, decimation-fan dad). But there is one bonus to them being his child, and that is:
Fun aunt Calliphone
Maximus is a failure. That's what his father says, at least. Perturabo sneers when he looks at him, face twisting into an expression of disgust, as if Maximus were but a worm. And maybe he is. He's so, so flawed after all. He's not strong enough, not smart enough to live up the expectations that had been placed upon him long before he was even born. Maximus will never be enough, Perturabo has made that clear. And since Maximus' father is the greatest man in the world, he has to be right.
Except aunt Calli disagrees. She regularly tells him how good he is. Calls him diligent, kind and bright. When he have her a small wooden bird he had carved himself, she had called him wonderfully creative. The bird is placed on the windowsill closest to her bed, it's own little perch. It fills him with pride whenever he sees it.
So what does it all mean? Maximus' father tells him he's lacking but his aunt calls him a prodigy. He can't be both, that's impossible, which means that one of those statements has to be false. But father is never wrong and his aunt would never lie to him. It's all so very confusing. Maximus wishes he wasn't such a disappointment, maybe then he could figure it out.

Sweet Creature
Content: magical living weapon, dehumanization, "it" briefly used as pronoun, dangerous whumpee, magical euphoria, shock collar, sensory (visual) deprivation, manhandling, military whump, implied institutionalized whump, magical slavery, heavily implied mass murder, hallucinations.
(chapter 1) | next chapter (soon) ->
(Curse of Withering masterpost)
Cyrus wishes to at least have a look around while outside. It would only be a military camp, soldiers walking around, tents set up, maybe some horses on one side. Not a very pleasant nor interesting view.
But at least he would be seeing the sky, and the grass, and people.
He's not. He's seeing pure black from behind his nullification glasses, being guided by an unrelenting hand on his neck, just above his heavy collar. Not even allowed to feel skin, only the tough material of a glove.
Around Cyrus, talk dies down, and muttering comes to life, as he's used to. It never stops making him feel ashamed.
Also not allowed to curl up or hide in any way, he's just dragged forward to keep walking.
A strong sensation of nausea hits him when they enter his designed post tent of this campaign. It feels like the protection barriers put around the tents are getting stronger each campaign.
Being on an empty stomach doesn't help, either. Regret fills him from refusing breakfast, but he's sure his stomach wouldn't have kept it down anyway.
"... This is it? The rumors made it look spine-chilling, not... this." A voice from his right side says, a bit far back. Further into the tent, then. Cyrus doesn't recognize the voice, but the words are familiar.
The gloved hand on his neck squeezes, and he stops after a second of trying to figure out if it was out of frustration or a command to stand still.
No scolding comes, so it must have been a command. Or both.
"Wait until you see it destroying a whole military camp while laughing like a maniac," Mr. Wilson says. That voice he does recognize in the very core of his being. And by the coldness of it, his handler is audibly used to that question as well.
Cyrus doesn't have time to feel ashamed of the words before a pressure on his neck commands him to kneel down. Even with the knee pads, a mercy not chosen by his handler, the impact hurts a bit.
"Behave." Is what reaches his ear before the leather gloves are unfastened from his wrists.
Magic wraps around the metal gloves that were beneath the leather ones and bend it open. Cyrus didn't even hear the metallokinetic's handler telling them to do that. Maybe this gifted doesn't have a handler, he knows there's some free Gifted that serve the military willingly.
Unlike Cyrus.
He obediently waits with unmoving hands until his handler applies pressure on his head in another silent command. No one speaks as the nullification glasses are unlocked from his bowed head, nor when his half-necrotic fingertips find the floor beneath him.
It's not grass, it's rocks. He suppresses a disappointed sigh.
Cyrus knows better than to look around or shift from his position, but he's still able to see a bit of the tent's inside. The metallokinetic does in fact have a handler, and a black eye. He can't see anyone else, they're all behind him for safety.
That black eye must hurt, there's probably more bruises under the clothing, it never stops at just one.
Cyrus shouldn't care that the gifted was hurt. But he did. They deserve someone to care.
Mr. Wilson blocks his vision of the gifted by crouching down. The direct, practical delineation of where the enemy camp is sinks into his mind easily as his handler speaks. It's easy to map in his head exactly where he needs to focus on.
"You have permission to use your power, Wither." An uncomfortable eagerness blooms in him at the words.
"Yes, sir," Cyrus whispers and his collar beeps, its blue lights turning red as magic comes to life under his skin once again.
𝚃𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚊𝚛𝚎, 𝚜𝚠𝚎𝚎𝚝 𝚌𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚝𝚞𝚛𝚎.
Pain doesn't even register in the sea of feelings building up in his body. The rocks puncturing the palms of his hands aren't nearly enough to ground him, not after years of the magic slowly numbing his nerves.
The tent disappears and all he can see is colors erupting from the blackness, like thousands of little roots travelling through the ground, coming from his fingertips. Ignoring the surrounding life had become easier over the years, and the withering knew to travel until it's closer to the delineated area than to him before branching to reach all soldiers of the other side.
It took less than a minute for him to spiral into euphoria this time.
Faintly, he knew his lips were moving, in that same eerie murmur of always, singing words he couldn't understand, but also couldn't forget. An incantation that breaks the laws of nature. A chant that was never created... only repeated. The echo of something that always existed.
And so he repeats. From the words, waves of withering magic follows the colorful branches and pushes it forward.
His hands crack and dug further into the ground, and he repeats the chant again. Again, again, again...
𝙰𝚐𝚊𝚒𝚗.
Cyrus could see, or in a way feel, the life bursting out of the enemy's camp. It was hard to separate what was greenery and what was people, but it didn't matter in the end.
Wither magic fills the entire enemy camp with thousands of black ramifications that only he sees the colors of. Growing, rotting, decaying.
Every cell in his body beams with giddy energy.
A warm mist swirls on his arms pleasantly. Something similar started filling his eyes, and Cyrus's head was pure delight. His chest shudders with a bubbly feeling as a smile grows on his face.
And then everything goes black. The cold, painful reality crashes down on him, harshly taking all the cheerfulness away and leaving behind an itch, a hysteric uneasiness. A faint beeping of his collar tells him he's done today, it had turned blue again.
Cyrus didn't even know he had made a noise until the collar beeps again with a warning electrical shock. With a flinch, he goes dead quiet. An argument was happening over his head.
Cyrus wants to keep using his magic, why can't he? It's so warm and happy-
"It was fucking smiling, it is fine to keep on! What is the point of having a weapon that can't be used?!" A man behind him almost yells. Not the same one from before, a slightly more familiar one. It might be the general, but without seeing it's hard to be sure.
Yes, Cyrus was fine to keep going, he was! It's been less than a minute with the nullification glasses back on, but he misses the colorful cheerfulness already, his body is taut with the need to move, to do something, anything.
But Mr. Wilson is right there, so he stays obediently still.
"I'm not telling it to launch an attack again! The magic would consume it's head and-" Mr. Wilson pauses, and Cyrus recognizes his temper rising. It's an effort not to flinch. "Ugh, you have no idea how bad it gets. Wither. Up, we're leaving."
"Mmn?" The order takes a second to click. "Oh... yes, sir..." To speak was hard, his tongue didn't move the okay he wanted it to. Cyrus could hear the ecstatic smile on his own voice, and he almost winces at it, but without knowing why. To smile was good, wasn't it?
Should he even be speaking, actually? Wilson doesn't usually like him speaking. Did he say "Sir" as he was supposed to? He doesn't think so... but no shock comes. Perhaps he did. It's hard to remember.
The floor seemed to spin beneath Cyrus when he stood up.
A gloved grip squeezes his arm and Cyrus knows to stay completely still, despite the dizziness. Magic envelops his hands as the metal gloves are bent to fit them again. He still couldn't hear the metallokinetic's handler telling them to do it, maybe it had been a silent command.
He feels the leather gloves being fastened on his wrists, too, before Mr. Wilson grabs him by the upper nape and guides him out. The sound of many boots around them tells him the escort team is here already.
On the way back, there's no longer any murmuring. Even blinded, he knows everyone is just staring. There's only the sound of heavy steps and the wind slowly bringing the smell of death into the camp.
The heavy metal door shuts with the escort team outside, and the only steps that echo inside the container are his and Mr. Wilson.
Blindly, he's pushed to sit inside his resting capsule. Oh, that's right, he's at a campaign, his den isn't here... the sad longing only lasts a second.
The thin mattress is cold, and the restraints are too tight. Cyrus hates the cold, but it feels so weird, he can't help but giggle. It sounds off, but he can't pinpoint why.
"Quiet," Mr. Wilson scolds sternly, fastening his legs securely inside the capsule. Cyrus flinches and tenses from the upcoming shock that doesn't arrive.
What a silly thing, to flinch from something that didn't even happen. He suppresses another fit of giggles.
The pressure building up behind his eyes and neck is getting harder to ignore. His fingers twitch with the need to use his magic again, but the nullification doesn't let him.
The pressure gets worse.
𝚂𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚞𝚜, 𝚜𝚠𝚎𝚎𝚝 𝚌𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚝𝚞𝚛𝚎.
Now the shock comes, and Cyrus's flinch is not so funny this time. It wasn't just a warning shock, but he doesn't know why he has been punished. Mr. Wilson doesn't clarify it, either. He's scared of not knowing.
The twitches are getting worse. He wants to move. The cold is starting to creep in again, and he wants the warmth back.
His hands move slowly under the temporarily loose restrictions, trying to relieve some of the painful nervous energy without grabbing Mr. Wilson's attention.
It doesn't work. His handler always sees everything.
"Did I say you could move, Wither?" Cyrus freezes from the gelid tone. His shoulders go up chastened just before a gloved hand fists his hair harshly. That'll form a knot later... he wants to wash up and detangle his hair already, before it gets too bad.
From how harsh Mr. Wilson's grip is, he doesn't think he'll be allowed that so soon.
"Stop trying to be sneaky, that's the only warning you'll be given." Cold and firm as always. Frightening as always.
"Yes, sir," Cyrus answers quietly. It's weird how he still feels afraid and sad even when he's feeling giggly and euphoric.
Euphoric. Didn't that word mean something important? The headache is getting worse.
Mr. Wilson's grip only grows even more painful. There's more to be said, but Cyrus's head is not working well. He doesn't want to talk, he wants to move.
What weapons want doesn't matter.
He tries again. "I'm... I won't be sneaky again. I'm sorry, Mr. Wilson." The hand leaves his hair without any further words.
The need to move only gets worse in the silent. He knows Mr. Wilson knows. Cyrus's body is so tense it hurts.
He needs to use his magic, he needs to. It hurts, it's bad, he wants the giddy energy back, and not this nervous, restless cold creeping in. Everything is still pitch black, and the restraints are too heavy, and he wants his magic free again-
So you can kill more people with it?
No. What? No, no, no-
Your handler stopped you before the euphoria truly took place. Where is your gratitude, you vile thing? Why must others die just so you can smile?
That's not what he wants, he just... he just wants the colors back, the happy feeling of-
Of killing.
The memories of colored forms change. Those were people.
People you killed.
"Are you crashing already?" Comes the distant, cold voice. It takes long seconds for Cyrus to recognize it's Mr. Wilson's.
Crashing. Yes. Yes, he's crashing, and he's still on war camp, so he doesn't even get his white den-
Images strafe his mind. People died. People were killed. By him. And he was just smiling. He giggled to people losing their lives. Not only soldiers, there were medics, and servants, and-
A cold, sharp thing runs his arm and he flinched away, swallowing hard. He tastes blood. He knows it's not his.
Vile thing. You're a plague on earth that should be eradicated.
Cyrus's back presses against the capsule mattress, and he can barely separate what is real touch and what isn't. Sharp goosebumps run up his arm, his hands are being held, there's a pressure on his chest and a numbness on his left leg.
"It's euphoric state was pretty fast this time, it was a good timing to retrieve it," Mr. Wilson's out loud thinking reaches his ear along with a faint noise of screams that mustn't be true.
They're true, you're just hearing them too late.
"Today will be easy, then."
Cyrus couldn't disagree more with his handler.

Want to see Mr. Wilson's pov? This is the drabble this series began as. You can consider it an almost canon version of this chapter, but in Mr. Wilson's view.
Curious to what Cyrus called "den"? Here we go. And why did he call it a den, when it's just a white room? Here we go too.

Curious to how the capsule he's in is like? Here.

1) Jack was introduced as an important plot point in Cas' storyline, from the very beginning his story was supposed to be tightly connected to Cas'. But I suppose execs thought that having Misha and Alex in the episodes together was luxury (and we can't even think about making an episode where Jensen and Jared aren't involved) which led to rare interactions between Cas and Jack which is deeply disappointing.
2) The same as 1.
3) They tried to do that in season 5 while making him a parallel to Bobby's disability, but in the end both of them just got better lmao. After that Cas losing his powers and gaining them was used mainly as a crutch to the main storylines.
4) Self-explanatory, I think
5) This is going to be complicated. Most likely it's just a me problem. Yes, there's charm to Cas being a total loser. Yes, trying to accept yourself beyond your usefullness is a theme. Yes, I get it. But. It feels bad. He's an autistic-coded character to whom I relate a lot. Because of my autism many people think that I'm incompetent, that I'm unable to do any job, that I'm too uhh child-like for it. And through Cas it seems to me that show says "yeah, lol, you're a loser, you can't do anything yourself, you should just give up and let others do your job". Like it's totally connected to my personal problems and to how I interpret the character, but if we're talking about lore of the show, shouldn't he be one of the most effective soldiers of Heaven? Why does he lose all his skills? I'm sure not all of them were connected to his angelic powers. And if they were, couldn't writers let him learn new skills? I just want the show to give him a little more dignity.
6) I just want what Dean fans have - lots of boyfriends/girlfriends for Cas.
7) If you're burying gays, don't be pussies about it. The "yeah, he's here in the Heaven" undermined Cas' sacrifice for no good reason.
8) If you can't have Misha in the episode, at least think of the fun explanation for Cas' absence. Like "Yeah, sorry, I wasn't in the last episode because had to fight aliens", idk.
9) I just want more drama. Moriah was good, but I want more.
10) The idea of Godstiel cults existing after season 7 is sexy to me.

I want to make weird church art. Any suggestion on where to start?
Here's my three step guide to getting started with weird church art:
Step one: there's a little guy in your head who keeps telling you that nobody wants your weird Mormon art. That nobody outside the church cares and nobody inside the church wants that. It's a niche within a niche and there's only, like, three people in the whole world who will know what you're going for. Find the little guy in your head who says that
AND MURDER HIM.🔪🔪🔪💅🔪
Embrace the idea that you're making this art for yourself. Do what you love because you love it.
Step Two: Find inspiration. I got into weird Mormon art by way of a random interest in Vaporwave a few years back. As I poked around Vaporwave subreddit and online communities, I also kept an eye out for any Mormon connections (because that's just a weird thing I do all the time) and I came across LazerOS, who was making some very weird, very Mormon Vaporwave art. It blew my little mind. We can do that? We can make blatantly Mormon art? We can not only talk about, but also embrace the weirdness of Mormonism and NOT apologize for it? Mind. Blown.
Once I knew that there was a least one weird Mormon artist, I started looking for more to see what kind of stuff they were getting away with: Camila Stark's witchy eco-goth approach, Matt Page's Pop art, and any others. The ARCH-HIVE is a great place to find artists making good stuff. Taking in their stuff sort of gave me permission to make my own stuff.
Also make sure to look at more traditional, mainstream Mormon art, C. C. A. Christensen, Minerva Teichert, Jorge Cocco Santángelo, and others. Find what you like to see and absorb it into your artistic being like some kind of cosmic jello horror.
Step Three: Do NOT recreate the Art & Belief movement! You're gonna want to. You might even already want to. I think most Mormon artists go through an Art & Belief movement phase. Don't. It's been tried, it was good, but it failed. Basically the Art & Belief movement was an attempt by LDS artists in the 60s and 70s to make world class Mormon art. The phrase I've heard connected to it was "to make Salt Lake like the Vatican, where people have to find quiet corners to weep for the beauty of the art".
That's a noble goal, and the Art & Belief movement produced some beautiful stuff, but ultimately it failed because of the simple face that Salt Lake is not the Vatican. Mormon art will never be Catholic art. Not should it be. Nearly every force involved in the Art & Belief movement from the artists themselves to church leadership wanted Mormon art to be something it wasn't. The artists wanted it to be something that connected emotionally to the world and church leadership wanted it to be instructive and traditional. Both were disappointed because that's not what Mormon art is.
Frankly we don't yet know what Mormon art is. That's kinda what the goal of weird Mormon art is, throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.
Ultimately the TL;DR version is this: Make your art for you. Learn what you like and do that. Let it be what it is and learn to love it.
