Idk if it outright ever says the year(s) the Professor Layton games take place (I haven't come across it yet and I'm on The Unwound Future so if any of the prequel games mention a year/time then disregard this), but I think it's funny to just guess. Because at like first glance you're like "Oh, Victorian inspired time! Obviously! British, tophat, suspenders, classy dresses..."

But then you look a little bit closer and it's like "oh, but Layton had some regular orange polo shirt, and sneakers..." "Oh, this one kid keeps making BRRZZT sounds like a game show which definitely wasn't a thing in that era..." "some ladies are wearing dated dresses, while some are wearing pants and layers of clothes that rival that of 2010s fashion...."

And I'm sure that's the point. To be inspired by both a classy and modern era. But it's just silly to see a tophat-combination-sneakers from a man who claims to be a British gentleman. Most casually dressed British gentleman I've ever seen, that's for sure.

All that to say... from what I've played so far, these games have always tilted on the genre of borderline steampunk (at least the first 3 games. Idk ab the prequels) so I'm glad but also surprised they're finally delving into an actual New World of Steam. :]
