Just read the first chapter of someday.

First of all. I love the name; I love the theme. There’s something about hoping for a better future/realizing it’ll all kinda just be an extended version of the present that’s very heartbreaking. I liked your note at the end about feeling like you’re still you and you didn’t really change. I feel that so deeply - I don’t think I’m at all separate from the me that was 6 and 12 and 15 like they’re all me. So yeah, very cool. I’ve added a bunch of my thoughts in no particular order:

^ I love when characters are stuck in a physical place that is a metaphor for a time of their life or/and an experience or/and also very much that physical place. To me canon Bruce and Jason have never left Ethiopia.

“I know it is my father's first time on this Earth, too. And I know He had it worse when he was little. But I was little too.” etc etc (I assume it’s a reference to- love it. Steph’s relationship with her father is so interesting to me)

The bit about Dick wanting to gaslight Gotham into thinking Damian’s always been there 😭 he WOULD lol

A pleasure to see Dani again! I love her sm :3

Also: the story of Omelas, and how Jason doesn’t even really think about the moral argument of it, but is really mainly stuck on that one phrase. Very interesting window into his character.

Anyways. I loved this first chapter! Excited to see what comes next :)

that whole bit at the end of chp 1 came about bc I was looking at old journals of mine from elementary school and middle school and high school and realized I kept making goals for myself. kept writing down my hopes for the future and I wrote, so so many times, "I hope I'm better, someday" and I was sitting there and I couldn't have looked at my younger self and said "you are" bc I'm not. and I came to the understanding a long time ago that you can't cure yourself of a bad childhood, you can just try to have a better life and hold that small part of yourself more gently than any adult ever did. but I was mad about it, and I still am

that "but I was little too" was EXACTLY what I was referencing. 100%. entirely. I think about that a lot, whenever I try to think kindly of how my dad acted when I was a kid. bc he was in a really bad situation, but I was little too. idk I feel like the older I get the more nuanced my anger with my parents gets. bc they were too young to get married, they shouldn't have had kids. they were kids once, and life crushed them. ("I'm still angry at my parents for what their parents did to them" etc)

I think Dick's right, they should just pretend Damian was always there. I think the socialites would be too embarrassed to try and call it out. Vicki Vale would have an aneurysm

my thing with Omelas was that, Jason already thinks about those morals a lot, and he has kind of already decided that he doesn't think it's okay and something should be done about it. the comfort of the many isn't worth the pain of one. maybe the other kids are experiencing that dilemma for the first time, but Jason isn't. so that one line is really the thing he focuses on, bc he's not having that moral debate. he's trying to figure out if he's already been broken beyond repair, he wants to know if he's known too much fear to ever be free of it

i know we’ve all seen the nightwing movie intro post and i want to propose an intro to a tim drake (as robin) movie. also this is long so its under the cut

first of all i think that in this movie jack should still be alive and married to dana at the town house, after he gets out of his rich person depression. so if i’m remembering correctly, that would also mean to include steph, bernard, and darla as his friends. i think that one of the best aspects of tim’s run as robin is the fact that he’s hiding being robin from his dad, and the way that forced the robin run to focus on more than just being robin. i think that of tim’s generation of heroes at the time he was the only one who had to actively hide his hero status from his parent. (actually no that’s wrong there was anita fite, but i’m going to maintain this bc her dad was already entrenched in weird shit working for the deo, so a superhero daughter was not an insane jump i would say, esp with her family situation, by which i mean the guy that killed her parents) so anyways all this to say that i want the tension btwn his civilian life and his robin life to play a large role in the story, bc i love that shit.

so in that vein, i would want the movie to start out in his civilian life, and in a similar way to the nightwing movie idea where it doesn’t show his face until the title screen. like, we’re in the theater, we know what we’re seeing, so all we have to introduce is his civie life, bc we know who batman is and how he works.

so anyways to get to the actual intro…

we start out in literally the messiest teenage boy’s room you’ve ever seen. stacks of cds, messy notebooks with papers half ripped out, a half deconstructed computer tower, a picture of steph in a purple frame on the desk. there’s a photo booth strip of photos peeking out from behind with the core four, one of them wearing large oversized sunglasses so you can’t see his face. you hear a rustling sound off screen and a hand reaches onscreen and grabs a skateboard as a female voice (dana) yells for tim vaguely from a room away/downstairs.

we see tim’s legs/board as he jogs downstairs, then scan over like, family photos? to show the circus photo, show that janets died, jacks remarried, and like maybe some school awards? that taper off over time to show the effect of robin on his grades? like he’s focusing even more on being a hero, adding to the tension btwn civilian/hero life. maybe on the fridge there’s a report card with a c or d grade circled with the words “we will talk about this” or smth on it in red pen. tim opens the fridge, grabs a snack, and continues out the building, calling out a goodbye to dana/his dad on his way out.

outside, we see tim throw down his board and start skating (this part i see being soundtracked with i wanna be sedated by the ramones. major 90s teen movie vibes is what i want from this in general). he starts skating and we see the people he skates by wave at him, maybe with birds of prey-style notes pointing to each person saying what robin saved them from? idk maybe too derivative lol. anyways he keeps skating, doing a few tricks as he goes. the board obviously has like robin, nightwing, wonder girl, superboy, and impulse symbol stickers on it. maybe there’s like a handmade purple “s” design too for spoiler. anyways he keeps skating until he gets to a skatepark, where he meets steph, who says smth like “you ready to go?” and has either roller skates or in-line skates, obviously purple bc i want to really commit to stephs love affair with purple. we hear like a yes or smth from tim, who then skates into the park and we do a freeze frame on tim in the middle of a trick mid air, where we actually see his face for the first time, and get the big robin title over it. i want this to be disgustingly nineties.

i don’t know which robin arc i would want this to follow, or like a different plot, but i would like jack to find out he’s robin and make him quit. i’d rather have steph just get closer to bruce than become robin. i lovelovelove steph as robin but i’d want the movie to start and finish with tim as robin and i 1.) don’t want steph to die and 2.) just think that war games is too much to tackle to get him back as robin. i also don’t want a war games movie bc despite the fact that tim’s part of wg at his school is my favorite part of the arc, i really don’t want thay in a movie. like i would hate that in a way i can’t describe.

but also, i do want steph to be in a lot of this movie. she’s a really important character in tim’s run as robin, and at this point in the run, a lot of the issues were like half steph stories. also, as much as i love the core four, i’d like to focus on just gotham. i’d also like to maybe do tim’s 16th birthday arc, but i’d want him to already be 16 so…🤷‍♀️

soundtrack: lots of 70s/80s/90s rock and pop. the ramones, the clash (obvi), some led zeppelin, deceptacon by le tigre, blondie or maybe some spice girls? teenage dirtbag by wheatus is kind of a must. so is the cure. also when bernard hangs out with tim i want stacys mom to play when he sees dana. i have a brand and i stick with it. also maybe some rooney. during a steph part i’d really like chick habit by april march to play. also kids in america playing during a spoiler and robin fight montage.

so anyways yeah. that’s all i have. a lot of words for a little substance. and skater boy tim. i want tim’s vibes to be like a mix of both ferris and cameron from ferris bueller’s day off

uh oh, you’ve made the fatal error of giving me an excuse to rant about harley :)

the wip is not technically harley and jason bc harley is only in like one scene BUT i have so much to say. basically it’s in the arkhamverse (bc i never shut up about the arkhamverse) post-ak and jason is out killing everyone that wronged him 💕 girlboss

but the thing about harley in the arkhamverse that the games and comics don’t really talk about is. she is so sad. nothing good happens to her.

like her story is the same as in the comics but like,, once joker dies she gets No closure :( in the main verse when she and joker break up she actually gets to realize that the relationship was abusive and she gets to move on, but in arkham she mourns joker and?? no one cares???? idk. after joker dies harley is mourning and no one tries to help her or care about her at all! people are like "yeah lol jokers girlfriend is sad or whatever" and literally every single person (including bruce who is at least sometimes sympathetic of her) is like "classic harley being so dramatic 🙄" meanwhile harley is having a breakdown. then when she does her own thing no one cares to take her seriously because shes STILL just "jokers girlfriend” to them which is so :( :( :( and she finds out about the joker disease that people have and she is like "oooo new joker <3" because this gal is sad and mourning and looking for a way to revive joker because shes still in the infatuation era. PLUS she never got real closure for his death because all she knew was that batman carried his dead body out so she assumes he killed him and got no consequences (and the fact that no one outside ACTUALLY has a way to know what happened is a whole different rant because to everyone else, batman and joker entered a building, then batman left with a dead joker and a smashed cure on the ground. theres no way for everyone to know what really happened. but thats a thought for another day). anyways then jokers body gets cremated without harley being there or knowing about it so she doesnt even get to like,, say goodbye?

anyways obviously this is not pro-joker, but from harleys perspective !! that hurts!!!! she loved (?) him and he ignores her in every situation then dies and she doesnt even get to like. do anything about it. and in the end she gets no closure :(

and then my harlivy brain goes,, she loved ivy too! so so much!! ivy always cared about her and was there for her!!!! but then :) ivy :) dies :) and harley doesnt get to say goodbye. the last time harley really saw ivy was when she said that she didnt want to be a part of scarecrows plan and she was cast out by everyone else. i just hhh harley was so busy chasing a new joker that she ignored ivy then. ivy dies saving gotham from the plan that harley was helping with :( and yet again harley doesnt get to say goodbye or have any closure whatsoever :( :( :(

basically arkhamverse harley is going through it and i think shes due for a massive breakdown after arkham knight

Maribat au - big sis tomb raider mari

(Salt not Adrien friendly)

- the prelude -

• same as cannon only the temple is never brought back in feast, the building itself is brought back but the monks are gone Mari may be a powerful ladybug because she’s a true holder but they’ve been dead for a century and she has a cap on her powers because of her age (Chloé also only leaves for about a month or two)

•before fu goes bonk he actually teaches mari some shit abt the miraculous and the order. (The language, history and as much magic as he can)

•after she becomes the guardian she no longer has the time for class drama and resigns as class pres

•she can also train with past guardians and holders of any miraculous that she’s used (only ones that have died already so in this au not hippolyta or Alfred)

•she throws herself into finding out who hawkmoth is because now she has a secret order to rebuild and she’s done with not being able to cry

•she tells chat noir at their next battle to shape up after he almost gets her killed because stealing a kiss is more important than the battle at hand

•chat throws a fit and doesn’t show up for a while(how long is up to the writer)

• during all of this we still have lila and her classmates being dickheads so she has to deal with being all alone cause Adrien doesn’t have her back and she knows this because it’s been months and he hasn’t helped her once

•mari gets close to a previous ladybug who teaches her how to remain herself while putting up a front to intimidate the enemy (she uses this to appear disinterested in lila and her classmates effectively telling them fuck off idc what you think)

•after Lila says that marinette pushed her down the stairs again mari gets harmed in some way and decides to take tomoe up on her offer to learn fencing (as a result she and Kagami get closer)

•mari brings up wanting to be able to carry a self defense weapon on her person at all times but also doesn’t want to carry something like a taser or a knife so Kagami suggests war fans

•mari is like hell yea because a. She’s now closer to her culture and b. They look sick and she’s been wanting a style change for some time now

•Chloé is back at this point and sees what’s happening in the class and is like wtf

•while away she decided to improve herself so when she sees this she begrudgingly is like fuck it alliance

•mari and Chloé after an apology and a few tenative weeks become friends

•they have their style change together we now have techwear and occasional soft girl mari who constantly has a fan on her that matches with her outfit

•thanks to her training with the Tsurugis she now has an excuse for being so well versed in self defense

•she makes Chloé and Kagami permant holders and while Luka always has sass on him she only tells him to transform when she’s positive she needs him (watching your friends die time and time again and having the future of everything weigh on you being able to turn back time is stressful and she doesn’t want to fuck Luka up like fu fucked her up)

•at this point mari has also gotten closer to aurore who starts to run a blog once the ladyblog goes to shit and gets the turtle

•unlike the others she’s a hero whose focused on the citizens, she gets them to saftey and defends them if they get caught up in a battle rather than fighting Akumas directly

•chat noir hasn’t been present in any battles so they’re easier for mari and it reduces her stress over it

•they discover gabriel is hawkmoth (how it is is up to the writer)

•they have a showdown in which chat defends Gabriel because ‘he could never be hawkmoth what are you doing’

•because of this mari now has both the ladybug and the black cat miraculous on her during the fight with hawkmoth

•she ends up having to use both at the same time bacause training or not that power cap is a bitch when she’s fighting two people who don’t have it

•divine being mari because the two miraculous if not used to make a wish will just transfer the power it would take to make the wish into whoever combined them

•she beats hawkmoth and says fuck it hands him and Mayura over to the cops and peace’s out

•she doesn’t take back the miraculous from her team only Adrien gabe and nath

•she then chills out for the remainder of the school year and decides to visit the temple during the summer

•(wether she told her parents about everything or got disowned is up to you)

•by this point mari has made plenty of money as mdc and can afford to just fuck off to Tibet and rent an apartment for the summer

•(if she goes alone or with someone else is up to you)

•she spends the summer recovering all that she can from the temple (scrolls, additional miraculous, a grimoire that all guardians use)

•so by the time she returns to France for her senior year she’s got a good grip on magic and what she needs to do starting with recovering a box of miraculous that was apparently lost before the temple even fell

•she works with the others to pinpoint where they could be (museums, ruins, family heirlooms, buried under centuries of dirt, at a thrift or jewelry shop)

•eventually she ends up in Gotham for her senior trip

•where she gets caught up in a two face/scarecrow attack at Wayne enterprises (dick was leading the tour so he can’t get away to nightwing and Damien stuck around because it was either help with the tour or school and he fucking hates it there)

•she slips away and transforms (pleas e I’m begging for a costume change the onzie is hella ugly)

•comes back and kicks ass fixes the damage so no one needs the actual cure to fear toxin and peace’s out again

•she ends up doing it a few more times while she’s there somehow always around Damien/Robin (hes like 12-13)

•she nails him out of a bad joker situation (use your imagination) and he’s like yes my sister my hella suspicious sister I’ve adopted you now 😌

• so that’s how she ends up eating dinner in her ladybug get up with the Wayne’s

•she decides to go to college at gotham academy cause Gotham needs healing and there’s more than one miraculous in this town

•so now here she is tellin robin/Damien that she’ll be back in like a week or two because she needs to get everything in Paris sorted out before she chills here

•(wether they know ladybug = marinette is up to you)

•she goes back to Paris to finish out the school year going back to Gotham on the weekends to heal it the best she can and hang out with her cool murder baby brother

•she gets along with Jason the best after Damien cause it’s fun to fuck shit up with someone who is just as chaotic as you but slightly adjacent

•no romantic parings with any of the batfam cause she sees them all as her family (if she has a romantic thing going on with someone it’s probably with Chloé cause I’m a hoe for Chloénette)

•eventually Damien has a really bad day and he calls her at what he’s to be 1 am because he almost killed someone again and he just wants to be distracted from it

•so mari takes him to some old ruins she was planing on going to

•que Damien coming into the dinning room the next day with a magic sword and looking surprisingly content

•now mari is just the cool tomb raider sister who will takes Damien ruins when he’s feeling down hands him some cookies and let him sleep over

•eventually she gets caught stealing from a museum and now Bruce is talking about what a bad influence she is on Damien and how she’s not allowed to see him anymore and she’s like 😦

•ends up explaining everything (if they didn’t know her identity before they know it now)

•and Bruce is like wow shit do you need a parental figure

•mari now has been officially adopted as a Wayne

And there it is tomb raider mari. Idk if people are interested i could write an actual fic or go into more detail on certain parts

Stupid idea really. Dad Damian?

This is just something that my mind came up with when I was supposed to be asleep but, hey here we are. FYI about the other updates, I now have some more time since my school closed down so expect maybe 2-3 updates in a few weeks. Anyway, I don’t remember how but my mind just went, ‘what if older Damian adopted Marinette?’.... I’m gonna be honest I kinda liked it so I’m just going to post some random ideas about it. I may or may not make a mini series about it.

Ages?

I haven’t worked all of them out these are just estimates they may not even make sense. Alfred? Bruce 44, dick 28, Jason 25, Tim 22, Damian 19-20? Ml class 17-18, Marinette 15 almost 16. (I like the idea of Mari skipping a grade or two.

Marinette’s parents?

I think I might have them be... neglectful towards her? Maybe not on purpose, like they don’t know how to take care of her, not prepared but still kept her. They don’t treat her as a daughter more like a little adult. She had to learn how to do things on her own.

Marinette in general?

She has a lower confidence than in canon and is more quiet as well. I don’t know if I am going to add salt, maybe a little. She is ladybug in this but doesn’t have the ladybug onesie. Her suit is isn’t skin tight and the colors are darker. Her suit has a hood attached to it, as for the yo-yo it’s like the earlier concept. These are random screenshots that I saved from the wiki.

So her yo-yo can turn into a staff and is a bug-bomb? I guess.

Dad Damian?

The news about the akumas doesn’t get out of Paris, the mayor doesn’t think it’s that serious, ladybug always fixes things. So he’s in Paris because of business. He starts of small with a modeling contract. The Agreste brand. He does change his last name for that time period cuz Wayne is an eye catcher and he didn’t want to be favored in the brand just because of the name.

Anyways the way that I want Mari and Damian to meet is something along the line of her getting hurt destranforming, tikki comes out to see if she’s ok, she is not. She has caught the Akama but hasn’t casted the cure so she stayed injured. Then Damian finds her. Tikki being panicked and has no other option comes up to him and pleads him to take her to the guardian. Now of course Damian is confused and thinks he’s going mad because... tiny fary, hurt kid. But tikki tell’s him briefly what happened and what she and Marinette are. So he takes them to the guardian where he heals her.

Master fu is understanding and talks to him about their situation. He himself is getting old and can’t really train Marinette full time. Damian has heard stories about the miraculous in the league of assassins but he thought they were just myths. Master fu tells him their situation in Paris. Damian doesn’t say it out loud but is furious at Fu for choosing a young girl to take the role as one of the most powerful magic holders. Fu tells him that he has little time left and since he knows their identities he wants to tell him if he’s open to the idea of becoming the next guardian. Damian accepts the offer.

When Fu loses his memories Damian became the new guardian training Marinette as well. Not just in miraculous but how to properly fight in battle without risking your self. After some time she opens up to him and he becomes her father figure. When she’s tired he’ll tell her to take a break or when she does very good in class he’ll take her out for a day. Marinette at first doesn’t know how to react because her birth parents just ignore her, in her eyes Damian is papa while her birth parents are just Sabine and Tom. Father-daughter relationship.

Maybe I might post a part based on this later or tomorrow but idk. Goodbye!

How I feel about this character: OH he's such a bi disaster. But he's trying his best. Textbook himbo. Crushed under the weight of his father's expectations of him alot of the time. Probably struggles with self worth nowadays too,with the battles and family he's lost! Also he's very much like those memes abt dudes/dads where they'll mention some horrible childhood trauma and then have some funny song playing in their head like nothin even happened.! I feel like he cares very deeply for the friendships he's made and the found family he's gained with the warriors three [rip] and the avengers! Overall? Kind himbo who respects women and forgets how smart he is sometimes.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: honestly this is such a hard question cause im sure if u presented me with like,good reasons for most people then I'd be on board. But so far one of my Main ships for Thor rn is Bruce and Thor <3 GammaHammer makes me happy :} I've seen thor n valkyrie stuff too which is like aight they're all bi4bi t4t prolly,but honestly a polycule or some shit w Bruce Val and thor would be Inch resting :} I'm not sure tho! Oh and Jane Foster I Guess but she's not rlly up there.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: OH absolutely thor and loki ! Brothers 🤍 I rewatch the thor movies the other day and seeing them fight together and hang out as kids made me so 🥺❗ yknow? I also think Thor n Darcy are a fun pair! Thor and the warriors three make me :} as well bc they're all buddies! That's his little family yknow!! Or. Was.

My unpopular opinion about this character: listen i know I just called him a himbo but he's smarter than people give him credit for I think. But also he's pretty cocky at times with his fighting ability and I feel like that's his greatest downfall. He tends to sorta think he can do everything on his own,and he doesn't rely on others until he really needs to and it ends up w him or his companions hurt :(

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.: ough I wish we could've gotten more time to see him experiencing earth stuff! In other like shows n such (like one of the animated series) its funny to see him interacting with mortals and I feel like we don't get that enough. Like sure we got the "another!" Scene and if you watched the YouTube mocumentary he obviously doesn't understand money or jobs. But it's still funny and I'd like to see him go "I don't understand what that means :D" like an optimistic puppy yknow :]

Bucky-

How I feel about this character: I feel like. They should do more w him in the mcu! But that's just bc im a kinnie ig but it makes me sad that he's just viewed as Steve's Sidekick when he's got a personality and works so well as Sam's partner in TFAWTS! I like the representation he can bring to the table though,regarding disability (I mean even though. He's an enhanced person but yknow.) And mental health! He also shows that your past doesn't need to define you and you CAN be free and work past old mistakes.! I feel like he's a little out of touch sometimes bc of the time shifts and mental stuff goin on,but I'm not saying it's a bad thing,its just compelling to meeee

All the people I ship romantically with this character: I USED to ship stevebucky I won't lie,but I much rather prefer SamBucky bc its just better LMAO Sam is much cooler than Steve in many regards and to me Sam is a better influence on Buckys life ig? Like. Idk how to explain it well enough but their banter is better and they compliment eachother rather than one of them taking the reigns all the time. I just like the level playing field where it still feels like Bucky can be a Sidekick but his partner at the same time rather than Just Bucky Barnes. Idk if that makes sense but !

He's a complex person who's been used and weaponized and its annoying whenever people try to say he's a stoic person or whatever. Like no bro ur thinking abt the winter soldier. Ofc the winter solider was/is part of him and that doesn't just shut off but I think it's bs to boil him down to Killing Machine Assasinator Ooo Scary! When he was also a soldier during. Fucking Ww2! He was also like shown to be a bit of a dorky guy who liked to dance and be with chick's n shit lmao,like he mustve been a charmer. And even after,like during tfatws he's shown to still have bits of that personality. He messes around with Sam's nephews and offers help without prompting and just overall wants to live a more peaceful life while still managing to be social and humorous. ("How old are you anyways?" "106.") Anyways I think what I'm saying is ppl tend to forget to split him and tws.!

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.: this is sort of similar to the Thor thing but discovering new age shit! Are you staying home from work/school? yes, we are doing both remotely. I work on campus, but fortunately my department’s website direly needs updates so I’m still getting hours and easily able to do it from home.

If you’re staying home, who is with you? I have one roommate who’s stuck around but he lives at the other end of the hall and was already pretty sparse (although he finally got a replacement key the second week of quarantine) so usually he just shows up at 10 or 11am, showers and bumps around for an hour or two, and then leaves and I don’t see him again until 10 am or 11am the next day. so I’m basically by myself.

Who would be your ideal quarantine mate? my family or my friends anna and madeline.

Are you a homebody? yeah although I’d just spent the last year learning to be much less of a homebody, so it’s kind of a bummer to be shoved back here again when I was doing so well at getting out.

An event you were looking forward to that got canceled? I was going to present the first part of my undergrad thesis at a really niche conference in my field that I was helping to put on, but that’s moved back to the fall! I was also really excited about sitting in on a class on simone de beauvoir this summer, and that’s technically still happening but it’ll all be online and it’ll be different and lesser because of that.

What movies have you watched recently? double feature of portrait of a lady on fire (stunning) and lady macbeth (intriguing but flawed) last saturday night. a week earlier, I started with a trio of comfort food classics (frances ha, stop making sense, the hudsucker proxy) before watching stuff I’d been thinking about seeing in the back of my mind, but had never gotten around to: alien (would have been better as a short film; its reputation ruins all the best twists), true grit (solid mid-tier coens), hard eight (a nice lowkey character study), the witch (superbly crafted but I like it when a film, you know, has a point and this one fools you into thinking it does and then...doesn’t), married to the mob (a lot of fun, but something about it always felt just a little off which made it harder for me to get into), hot rod (popstar is the superior lonely island film by far), and an unintentional pairing of two films themed around “step siblings with a complex relationship that’s complicated even further when their parents don’t stay together”: mistress america and step brothers. I watched as many movies that first week of quarantine as I had the whole rest of this year before, but most of the first time watches were honestly only okay? idk if that says more about them or the emotional state I watched them in.

What shows are you watching? I have been so blessed that my apartment installed a big tv in the common room during those miserable renovations last year and that two of my friends had given me their netflix, hulu, and prime-with-an-hbo-subscription passwords. also cursed, because in the mood quarantine puts you in, all you can do for much of the day is watch tv and this setup really enables that. during the past three weeks, we’ve started and finished barry, derry girls, fleabag, and crazy ex girlfriend. derry girls was my favorite.

What music are you listening to? so after previously only knowing the four big songs from rumors, I’ve spent a good deal of quarantine getting really into fleetwood mac. they’re mellow and cheesy and comfortable in way that’s very appealing right now, but there’s also this nice undercurrent of mysticism, weirdness, and interpersonal tension to their songs that prevents them from descending into soft rock gloop. tried getting more into the cure, but they’re a little too dour for right now. bruce springsteen, carly rae jepsen, and haim are also heavily factoring in.

What are you reading? since quarantine started I’ve finished taylor jenkins reid’s daisy jones and the six (this is responsible for all the fleetwood mac if you’re keeping score) and toni morrison’s the bluest eye, which I read for a class that’s basically just my favorite philosophy professor doing a book club. I’m in the middle of reading italo calvino’s if on a winter’s night a traveler, albert camus’ the stranger, daniel lavery’s something that may shock and discredit you, and gradually working my way through ted chiang’s short story collection story of your life and others.

What are you doing for self-care? taking a lot of long hot showers, avoiding getting things done (works short term; causes less self-care long term), going on a hike in the local canyon foothills, doing a remote existentialist literature reading group with some friends.

untitled ficlet for Ironstrange Bingo Square “Joy”

I GOT AN HOUR TO WRITE SOMETHING (checks watch) MAKE THAT 47 MINUTES LET’S SEE HOW I CAN MANAGE THIS.

Title: [tba, taking suggestions]

Summary: Tony deals with feels he’s starting to get around the wizard, convinced that Stephen had cast a spell to bewitch him.

(Pretends they got the gauntlet and somehow defeated Thanos on Titan, then came home to Earth and were all Avengers together - everyone happy and healthy and alive.)

Notes: Absolute fluff. Listening to “I’ve Put a Spell on You” by TAWK Feat. Juliet on loop while writing this. Nina Simone is still queen, but this version reeled me in somehow.

...I’m lying, I’m actually listening to “Criminal” by Disturbed, idk why.

Will be put on AO3 once I’ve fixed it up.

“Whatever you’re doing to me,” Tony snapped, “cut it out, right now.”

That was a hell of a greeting, Stephen said to himself.

“I -- “

“Don’t try to deny it.” Wagging a finger in his face, now. Charming. “I’ve talked to Rhodey and Natasha and Bruce, I’ve even talked to Steve. They all agreed with me that you’re doing some magic thingamajig.”

Stephen didn’t really know any of the other personalities Tony had named, but knowing Tony as well as he did, Stephen knew Tony had probably talked all of them into agreeing with him.

...or was bluffing, and they didn’t agree at all, but Tony had to invent some sort of backup for his ridiculous claim.

“What, pray tell, kind of ‘magic thingamajig’ could I possibly be doing?” Stephen quietly challenged.

Tony folded his arms tightly across his chest. Standing as close as he did, Stephen could practically feel the nervous energy that emanated from him.

Was Tony blushing?

“You used the big yellow hamster ball thingy to save the three of us when the donut ship crashed, right?” he began in a confrontational tone. “Since then I’ve felt all weird. Around you, especially.”

“Oh?” Stephen was genuinely interested. Tony’s concern for his own well-being triggered his “doctor” mode. “Can you describe the symptoms more? It would make it easier for me to prescribe treatment.”

It was possibly not magical. Perhaps it was an allergy. But could it be a magical allergy? There were books in the Sanctum that talked about that...

“I can’t sleep,” Tony began. “I have trouble eating. All I think about is you and your stupid face and your stupid voice and you kicking Thanos’ ass with me until we got the gauntlet. While I’m working, you pop into my head and I get distracted and nothing gets done. It’s like you’ve infected my brain or something. You walk into a room and everything looks brighter. When I see you I feel...happy. At peace. Like everything’s going to be okay.��

Stephen listened to all of it silently, keeping his poker face on.

“It was the yellow hamster ball thingy, I’m sure of it,” Tony finished in annoyance.

“If that were the case, Peter would also be affected,” Stephen argued.

“Yeah, I guess you haven’t noticed,” Tony said sarcastically, “but the kid’s been hanging around you a lot. And hiding it from me, even!”

“He wants to learn magic,” Stephen explained. “He thinks it’s fascinating and complementary to his scientific studies. And he knows you’re uncomfortable with magic, so he thought it best to keep you out of the loop.”

“Shyeah,” Tony scoffed, “as if that’s a better explanation than magic in this situation.”

No amount of debate would change Tony’s mind, Stephen decided. Wow, the little jerk really thought I cast a spell on him and Peter.

Then Stephen asked himself, Why not have a little fun with that?

“Oooh,” he said with an exaggerated sense of dread. “I think I see. Yeah, that's a...side effect of the big yellow hamster ball thingy, I'm afraid. Uncommon, and never intended, but could be quite potent. It’s a love spell."

Tony’s eyes went wide as plates.

“A LOVE SPELL??” he exclaimed.

“And it looks like you got hit bad,” Stephen said with a tiny pout of sympathy. “Peter did, too, but he can still function normally. On the other hand, you - Tony, you. Need intervention.”

“What?!” Tony squeaked (yes, squeaked) in alarm. “Seriously??”

“Maybe we caught it early enough. A few sessions in the Sanctum with magic therapy ought to cure it. Maybe some psychic surgery...”

“NO.” Tony all but jumped back from Stephen, holding a hand out defensively, as if he was going to blast Stephen with nonexistent repulsor rays. “NO more. Magic got me into this mess, I am NOT letting more of that stuff in me.”

“This is serious, Tony,” Stephen said, advancing boldly. “You could die.”

“From a love spell??”

“From stupidity,” Stephen said fondly, stopping just a few inches away from Tony’s face. With a smirk, he explained, “I didn't hit you with a love spell, you idiot.”

Their closeness seemed to take Tony’s breath away. He looked away, his blush becoming more pronounced.

“Then...what did you...?”

“Tony, I didn't hit you with anything.” He ran his gaze over Tony’s face, softly continued, “Speaking as a doctor...what you’ve got appears to be a little bit of what I’ve got.”

Tony swallowed. Stephen enjoyed watching that stark Adam’s apple bob up and down. “Which is...?”

Stephen reached out and tentatively touched Tony’s face. Far from tensing up, it seemed Tony relaxed under his touch.

Tony closed his eyes and parted his lips. It was all Stephen needed. He leaned forward and touched their lips together gently.

Tony kissed him back hungrily, and that was the final confirmation.

When they finally broke apart, Stephen smiled and confidently answered, “A crush.”

(6 months later) “Still convinced you used your magic on me...” Tony sleepily murmured.

Stephen couldn’t believe they were having this conversation again. It was 2 fricking AM.

“Are you ever going to give me any credit?” Stephen groaned, gently rubbing Tony’s bare arm reassuringly from behind. “I didn’t need magic to get you to fall for me, okay? Just like you didn’t need any to get me to fall for you, and you did it first.”

Tony caught his hand, brought it up to his face, and kissed it.

“Wizards,” he muttered with absolute conviction, “can’t be trusted.”

Stephen pressed his lips against the back of Tony’s shoulder.

“This wizard can,” he promised. “Go to sleep, Tony.”

“Are you sure you didn’t hit me with anything? Because whatever I got, I still got it bad...”

“I’m going to hit you with something soon if you don’t shut up and go to sleep.”

Tony twisted round under Stephen’s arm so they were facing each other.

“That sounds like a threat, Mr. Wizard,” he whispered in a low, annoyingly seductive tone.

Annoying, only because it was 2 AM and they both had to get up in a few hours.

Apart from that, it was really, definitely not annoying at all.

Hi! I really love your Oracle posts. I haven't read a lot of Batfam stuff, but I think Barbara really is at her best when she's Oracle, and it's a shame that DC keeps trying to ignore that part of her character history. I was wondering if you could give me some recommendations as to where to start reading Oracle, and what comic runs to avoid?

Okay, so first I am glad you love my oracle posts ^_^ thank you! and she is definitely at her best as oracle.

Sadly I don’t have any oracle reading lists set up atm but i’ll tell you what I read

I read Birds of Prey (1998) which was 127 comics long. the most oracle content is in the first half, the team gets bigger and then the oracle content starts getting less and less there.

so I would start at Birds of Prey #1-46. This is Chuck Dixon’s run and somehow the weird conservative guy was the only one who didn’t do a magicure plot.

the issues he did that I would definitely skip here are 28, 29, and 30 when you’re reading because they struck me as really racist.

If you don’t like Chuck Dixon as a writer (and I wouldn’t blame you) i’d only read the best issues, which are outlined below:

The best issues in the chuck dixon run for oracle content IMO are Birds of Prey #8 (which has some very important things wrt quality of life and disability articulated) and Hunt for Oracle, which shows us just how formidable Oracle can be in her home turf. That was a crossover issue between Oracle and Nightwing (nightwing 45, Birds of prey 20, nightwing 46, birds of prey 21). there are other issues i like her in, but those ones stick out in my head as don’t mis.

Then there are 10 issues of guest writers which sucked. one had a magicure plot, the other just brought nothing but some weird romance drama.

then there’s the gail simone run.

the pros of the gail simone run is she is much better at writing women than chuck dixon and seems to be a better writer in general. the downside is now the cast is larger and she also decides to do a magicure plotline eventually (temporary but i still hate it). to the best of my knowledge there wasn’t a huge deal made of it and oracle wasn’t like “oh now i’m whole” like she was in Terry Moore’s writing but still. it was unnecessary.

So far, I’ve re read 56-65. it establishes a nemesis for oracle and i like some of her dynamics there, and she gets to be scary. there is also a lot of black canary and shiva content you might enjoy if you like those characters.

i will be cataloguing my favorite issues and least favorite from gail simone’s run later, but since i only read through it once it’s less fresh in my memory.

outside of birds of prey, i like barbara in no man’s land. in no man’s land volume one, we see the fact that with the infrastructure in gotham crumbling, she is at a disadvantage that able bodied people are not, but also due to her preparations and the fortifications of her base she has a lot of advantages everyone else does – she both doesn’t need to leave her apartment, because it is well defended and she has a good stock of food, but she also can’t leave it, because of the inaccessibility outside. it’s some nuance i’m not sure i see able bodied writers include often (I can’t remember who wrote this issue, so i have no clue whether they were able bodied or not).

no man’s land volume 1 also has an ending plot with azrael which had some important notes on quality of life and disability.

no man’s land volume 2 has some crossover issues with nightwing, in which babs gets to defend her base (again) and be awesome. basically any time bab’s defends her base she’s at top tier. however this part had some disappointing things, in that it was implied that barbara being in a wheelchair was what stopped her and nightwing’s relationship. weirdly enough, this showed up in nightwing but not BoP even though they had the same writer at this time. maybe there was a cowriter or something on BoP making it better or a cowriter on nightwing making it worse? IDK.

No Man’s land vol 2 also has cassandra cain’s introduction which :P not oracle, but awesome anyway.

outside of no man’s land and birds of prey i’m not really sure where to go. birds of prey is barbara’s longest running series, it starts as a duo title between her and black canary and gradually the cast gets bigger (most cast expansion happens in simone’s run).

there is also a 3 issue solo mini series called Oracle: the Cure. despite appearances, it is not about magicuring. it had some good content, IMO, but also be warned: If you are pedantic about comics matching reality or at least being possible, the “computers are magic” vibe here might frustrate you :P

for more oracle as a side/supportive character, she appears a lot in Batgirl (2000-) as a mentor for Cassandra (though I dont’ remember a ton of moments that make me think this is an essential oracle series. We do see that she tries to keep some of Bruce’s unhealthy habits away from Cass and protect her, but also that Cass feels a bit stifled and like barbara is being overprotective or trying to force her into doing “normal” things) and Batgirl (2009-) as a mentor to stephanie brown. In batgirl (2009-) she interacts with another woman who became disabled and now uses a wheelchair, and sort of takes her on as a protege, which I liked, but she’s not the main character. the main character is stephanie.

the important aspects of alana stark that i should’ve written down a thousand years ago (links to headcanons that apply below):

suit not same, she thinks leaving the arc on the outside would make it hella obvious that she’s literally iron man. so suit is different.

in this house we don’t believe in the registration act because alana won’t even admit she’s iron man

entire suit is masculine-coded and around 5′9″, voice-changer for a deeper, male tone included

no pepper in mainverse because she thinks she’s managing shit on her own (and she isn’t)

alana stark is genderfluid but largely transmasc in presentation, meaning she feels a lot more toward the ‘male’ spectrum of genderfluidity than ‘female’

was 16 when her parents died in a car accident (whether or not this was winter soldier related can be circumstantial if i write with a bucky, but by and large this was just a car accident, unrelated to the winter soldier)

the events of the first avengers, and the iron man films occurred. everything else idk her

her relationship with peter is a much healthier one (where you at @robinshood) and the stark internship is real and viable. she helps him in his career and helps in his later career as he grows older, has a much more respectful relationship on an overall, especially with aunt may, and is probably more like a combination of peter’s older brother/weird uncle than the.... we don’t talk about iron dad here, get it away from me

MCU Rewatch: The Avengers (2012)

I cut out a lot from the individual character metas but it’s still pretty long and IDK how to summarize, maybe just read the bolded text for some of the juicier points

LOKI: Unpopular opinion, I do not believe that Loki was directly mind-controlled by Thanos. I don’t care if it’s “canon.” However, there is no denying that Thanos hurt and tortured Loki. Whatever he went through, it was bad enough that Loki agreed to cooperate. But Loki thinks he 100% deserves a planet to rule of his own after being kicked out of Asgard when he was the “rightful ruler”. (Who thinks that when they’re being mind controlled, really?) He must have done some real persuasion to convince Thanos that he could bring him the Tesseract and that he would not fail. But even then the Other is really hard on him. Loki is doing someone else’s bidding and he knows it. And he tugs at the leash. But he’s “come too far”--been tortured too much--to fail.

Loki as the villain of this film is perfection. And the scene with Natasha blows me away every time. The montage during his speech just syncs with it perfectly. Poetic cinema, as they say, but in the most literal and professional sense of the phrase.

My headcanon ever since the first time I saw this movie is that Loki can read the minds of Midgardians. Even if Barton told him everything (which I might not sure is even possible), Loki being slightly psychic is still cooler. Loki in this movie is freaking SCARY. (but that’s why he’s great, give Tom Hiddleston an Oscar already, Hollywood what is wrong with you?)

Who is the Other? He kind of reminds me of the Mouth of Sauron in LOTR. Is he another sick, twisted sycophant who believes in Thanos’ cause? Of course. He is proud to represent Thanos, and what’s more, acting creepy and giving people poetic threats is his way of doing his job: intimidating people into cooperation. Well, not like it matters much. I laugh every time I watch GOTG and Ronan kills him.

Coulson’s murder made Loki a murderer

I love Loki but I still want to punch him for what he did to Barton and Selvig and not to mention Coulson and just doing lots of bad things for bad reasons and I hope when I do punch him that it hurts, I don’t care if he’s a fictional character I’m going to punch him

THOR: Asgard must have some kind of dope intelligence system. They knew about the Chitauri–they didn’t know where they were from or who they were working for, but they knew enough and Thor knew enough to figure that he’d better get Loki before it got out of control. Also, the rest of the universe knows that one paramilitary organization on a small planet was experimenting with an Infinity Stone a really powerful energy source to use as a weapon. So Thor going to Midgard isn’t just about getting Loki: it’s making sure that a world under Asgard’s “protection” isn’t overrun by an invading army. And don’t forget, Thor has officially designated himself the Earth’s protector–he’s willing to share that responsibility with the Avengers, after these events. Willing enough to go search the universe for answers about the Infinity Stones. Maybe after Infinity War he regrets that.

Thor admits to Coulson for being embarrassed for himself and his people because of all the destruction and chaos Loki has caused

The moment when they’re in New York and Thor and Steve are taking a break–that’s when they bond. Other people see Steve Rogers as a mere wooden soldier but Thor recognizes a kindred warrior spirit. Thor and Steve’s friendship is criminally underrated and has a heinous lack of screentime.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: I have to admit, on this viewing Steve’s characterization seemed a little wooden to me. But it makes sense if you keep in mind that Steve is under stress about being in a new place and time.

I’ve always liked Steve’s uniform in this one, even though it’s not very popular or not as “cool” or practical as some of the others. What I dislike, though, is the helmet. The more it’s off, the better.

Steve actually doesn’t deal with stress that gracefully

I hate to say this, but Steve walks away from this movie with a deep-seated mistrust of Tony Stark and it’s only going to get bigger and get worse

I can’t help thinking of this famous saying: “It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, rather than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

All of the above considered, Steve Rogers went through a lot of crap during the War. And it wasn’t all just fighting Hydra. He must have led the Commandoes on other not closely related missions, too. But he’s been in a lot of different situations. He knows how much bad there is in the world. He knows what kind of people want to take over the world. That’s why he isn’t taking crap from anyone.

And even if Steve isn’t psychic he sees right through Loki. Steve and Loki don’t get much screen time together but Loki knows how Cap feels about him and it bugs him. And that’s why Steve is so pushy about wanting Tony and Bruce to stay on task because he knows Loki and Loki’s accomplices are up to no good and they need to stop it

Cap actually has been on some pretty bumpy plane rides.

I agree with the fandom that it is unfair that someone as young as Steve (only like 25 years not counting the ice) is pushed into a lot of leadership positions. But he gets called on to lead because he has that wartime experience. He knows how to lead a team, he knows how to fight battles of all sizes. And being a leader, Steve knows when and when not to trust the people in charge. I think Tony takes a cue from him when he deals with Loki.

IRON MAN: Between Iron Man 2 and when Avengers opens, Tony is actually Living his Best Life(TM) with Pepper and the fact that the events of this film ends it forever kills me.

When he sees the portal open and the Chitauri coming out, the response “Right–army” sounds cute but he’s genuinely terrified. He’s already bruised from his brief encounter with Loki when he literally flies into the Mark 7.The longer the battle goes, the worse it gets.

The Nuke: Tony made his fortune building/designing weapons and then he stopped when he saw that they were being used to kill innocent people. The government ordering a nuclear strike on Manhattan is horrifying to him. He figures out a good way to get rid of it and stop the Chitauri. He doesn’t let go until he’s absolutely sure that it’s over, regardless of the cost to himself.

Summary: Tony goes from being in a good place to a bad one. There are some things even shawarma cannot cure.

Tony already knows Bruce Banner’s history and has studied his scientific work. Tony already knows about all the crap that Banner has been through. Tony relates to what Bruce has been through. He validates both the Hulk and Banner. The science bros are actually a really big deal and they mean a lot to me.

I am so glad Pepper was in this movie and I am so glad that Pepperony exists so help me if the Russos kill off Tony in Endgame–

Steve and Tony really almost got into an actual fight in that lab scene. They really did.

I never got the line “We are not soldiers” until this time around. He’s referring to those airmen in Afghanistan who died in vain to protect him from the terrorists that kidnapped him. He doesn’t want to think that of himself, or anyone else of the Avengers, or even Coulson. I wonder if maybe to an extent he can’t deal with the guilt or the mentality of going to war. Golly, figuring that out is a gut punch.

THE HULK: I don’t really feel like there’s much to say about Bruce this time around. Except that I’m so proud of him for actually going to Calcutta and helping people who needed help. I’m glad that SHIELD wanted him for his expertise and not just the Hulk. He is happy to be used for his knowledge. And meeting Tony Stark was probably the best thing to ever happen to him.

Even the Hulk cares about Tony–the Hulk likes Tony Stark/Iron Man better than he likes Bruce Banner.

BLACK WIDOW: Natasha has a legitimate fear of the Hulk and it’s actually kind of incredible that she did get past that. If there was something in this film about Natasha’s fear versus the Hulk that was supposed to be continued in Age of Ultron, bad writing killed it. Either that or there wasn’t enough exposition.

There’s an implication, with how Natasha is the first of the big 6 shown, how she’s asked to go find Banner, that Fury and Coulson kind of looked to her as a leader or co-leader for the Avengers. Would her responsibilities include bringing and keeping them together? Yes.

Natasha still thinks about the big picture during the battle. She knows that her teammates have limits. She knows what they’re up against.

I think she does get kind of scared when she’s riding the Chitauri chariot thing and she’s trying to control it. It’s not an easy task and there’s also speed and the risk of falling.

Clint and Natasha’s relationship is amazing. It’s one of the best things about this movie and it’s a travesty we don’t really see this again in the MCU (holding out hope for Endgame). They talk and fight and work together like they’ve known each other for years. She looks up to him because he helped her change her life. And now he looks to her because she saved his.

HAWKEYE: I just…need more Clint Barton in my life. Seriously he is so cool. Like he really needed a stand-alone movie in Phase 2. He just deserved better period and by that I mean more screen time. Maybe it wouldn’t have worked for him to have been in Cap 2 but he needed something.

COULSON: Agent Phil Coulson is the heart and soul of this movie.

The Stark Tower visit: Pepper calls him “Phil,” she notices that he looks shaken (even though it’s hard for even me to tell). She asks Phil about the Cellist and Tony offers to even fly him out to Portland to see his SO–do you know how much plane tickets cost that is huge. It is more than safe to assume that Phil has kept in touch with Tony and Pepper and even come over to hang out. Like enough that Pepper can read his moods. Good grief Pepper must have been destroyed when she found out.

Despite the initial bureaucratic unfairness, what if Coulson has kept in touch with Jane and Darcy? Maybe been a liaison to SHIELD for them. Did he suggest to SHIELD that they recruit Selvig?

Coulson is naturally a friendly person, and Thor is comfortable enough with him to talk about his concerns about Loki. Like they are friends. Like THOR WATCHES HIS BROTHER STAB AND KILL THE SON OF COUL, CHAMPION OF MIDGARD, AND HE WILL LIVE WITH THAT FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE.

If Steve Rogers thought he’d escaped the Captain America fans boy was he wrong

But more importantly, Captain America is Coulson’s hero and Steve knows it. When Coulson dies, Steve knows that it was because he was trying to stop Loki and that Coulson was a good man.

Do you see why I want to/am/should be writing fanfiction about Coulson?

Coulson also knows Nick Fury very well. I would go so far as to say that on a certain level they are like brothers, even. Gosh they better get quality screentime in Captain Marvel!

Of course Coulson has known Clint and Natasha for years, maybe even as long as they’ve been at SHIELD. You hear the concern in Coulson’s voice when he tells Nat that Barton’s been compromised. It’s redundant to say this but it’s audible. He knows what Clint means to Natasha. He’s probably one of the 5 people who know about Clint’s family, maybe Phil is friends with Laura. And it’s implied that he has a personal relationship with Clint.

TL;DR Phil Coulson genuinely cares about the Avengers individually and as a group. He probably knows about Steve, Tony, and Banner more than they know each other by the end of the film. He knows that they’re the only real line of defense. He knows that the guys and Nat are capable of doing great good. He believes in heroes .Nick Fury tells them as much in his pep talk and for dramatic effect he uses the cards. Subtext: Coulson cared about you guys. He believed in you. And he wanted you to go kick Loki’s butt. Phil Coulson just really cares about people no matter how well he knows them. And I love him for it.

NICK FURY: Knowing what we know now--because Coulson and Fury will be in Captain Marvel which takes place 15-ish years earlier--Coulson and Fury in this movie already know that there are bad ETs and they play rough. Even after the Chitauri are finished, Fury knows that this is just the beginning. He may have even suspected that Loki didn’t get that army on his own. That explains why Nick Fury asked the World Security Council to approve Insight. And the Dark Elves in Thor TDW may have made it more urgent.

You have to keep in mind, though, that Nick is under pressure from the Pinheads on the World Security Council and Hydra sleepers working under him

Nick is no stranger to pressure, however. He knows what he’s doing.

“I was playing something even riskier.” Riskier than weapons because people with superpowers can’t always be controlled or at least do what you want or even ask. Riskier because he suspects (rightly) that they won’t always get along. And that if they do disagree they may turn on each other. Riskier because people with superpowers cause destruction, sometimes more than they can fix. But always less than they prevent if they can do their job.

The events of Civil War may not have been that surprising to him as he watched from a distance wherever. He may have been quietly rooting for Cap. Or even worked with the Secret Avengers...where was I?

(Not that he doesn’t love Tony)

I actually appreciated Nick more on this viewing

Nick Fury is, in fact, the Main Character of The Avengers. We just didn’t realize it until now.

SHIELD AND MISCELLANY: I may need to watch this movie again soon because the peanut gallery that is My Family made it kind of hard to watch

But one of my brothers suggested why not have Cap hook up with Maria Hill? I admit it’s intriguing but they don’t actually have that much interaction in this film or in CATWS. Ships have sailed on more shallow waters but I don’t think this one floats for me.

The soundtrack is perfect, a great blend of dramatic epic themes with spy movie beats, with some chilling backdrop music to set a sinister tone for Loki. Alan Silvestri’s best work.

THE AVENGERS THEME MUSIC IS MAGNIFICENT, IT DESERVVES AS MUCH ATTENTION AS THE STAR WARS THEME

Infinity Stones do what they want.

Infinity Stones are also connected and that might be important in Endgame.

This is still one of the greatest superhero movies ever made. Still one of the best movies ever made period. Granted, you have to have seen the other movies for it to make any emotional sense but The Avengers is a masterpiece. Every character interaction has weight. Every detail is connected. The storytelling here is matchless. That’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it as fact.

Age of Ultron was just so “bad” that the rest of y’all forgot how good The Avengers is.

I would love to see this movie on a big screen again one day. Maybe a summer drive-through. It might be the only MCU movie besides GOTG that would be appropriate for that.

Jane Foster isn’t stupid y’all. She would have figured out something was up when SHIELD shipped her to consult at a remote observatory. The moment she saw Thor on the news her suspicions would be confirmed, when she heard about Coulson and Loki she would be even more hurt and confused about why Thor didn’t even at least look her up to say hello

The Original 6 Avengers are bonded in a way but they’re not really a family.

Actually they are but they aren’t at the same time, it’s hard to describe. Even when they spend more time later and build a working relationship they aren’t quite the family some of them think they are. Some of them are part of each other’s families but they’re not really a solid unit. Age of Ultron and Civil War split them along the subgroup lines that are already there.

Eric Selvig looks like a mess when he comes out from the mind spell. Is he ever okay again?

The guy who found Banner in the abandoned hangar may have seen aliens before.

While Thor opened up the MCU to “other worlds” it was really The Avengers that established that there was an entire UNIVERSE beyond where the Avengers were from--beyond even Asgard and its conquests--full of worlds that had lots of alien races--and plenty of them could pick a fight with a puny blue planet of people with relatively primitive technology if they wanted to. I think GOTG establishes that most don’t. But some still do.

I really don’t think there’s anything to compare with being on a movie set where Robert Downey Jr has been turned loose.

I still think Loki should have had that drink and I hope he did

Coulson might one day forgive Nick Fury for doing what he had to do--but those trading cards were in near-mint condition. Sheesh.

so, now that i feel mildly better enough to write about it, I did indeed see Justice League.

It was...it was better than the Superman movies and BVS. And Suicide Squad. Definitely watchable. Not spectacular but there were only a few scenes where i was like “ugh this is taking too long”, the ending actually went by pretty quickly.

But did have a very forced patchwork feeling of two movies smashed together (which it was, considering the reshoots). I mean ya wanna talk about tone problems. On one hand we had somber dark and edgy BVS type stuff on the other hand it was incredibly cheesy! so cheesy! and I like cheesy! but this cheese kinda felt really forced- if you’re going cheesy you need to go the whole hog. own the shit out of it. this movie didn’t quite make it.

They definitely made an effort to revert Superman to Superman Classic. Apparently dying and coming back to life makes you like 1000% more cheerful everyone should try it. And I like what they were going for but I don’t think Henry Cavill can quite pull it off. yet. i mean maybe he’ll get used to it, it was a major tone shift for him. It doesn’t come off a genuine “aw shucks” thing like it should for Clark it felt...forced and a little condescending. Supergirl’s Superman, in contrast, was a lot more of a natural at it. But yeah, maybe he’ll get used to it. Points for trying.

the absolute worst part was the Superman is OUT OF CONTROL RAGEZOMBIE BACK FROM THE DEAD fight vs everyone else like it dragged so long and we all knew exactly how it would we know he’ll beat up everyone we know Bruce will get Lois and love will cure everything just got STOP WE DON’T NEED THIS JUST GET ON WITH THE MOVIE

actually the worst part was the villain, a very generic evil it was absolutely impossible to care about them fighting at all like it was even worse than Suicide Squad and that is saying a LOT

they...definitely tried for some Bruce/Diana sexual tension and i was definitely not here for it like oh god can you just not arbitrarily pair Diana up with one of them always can DC stop.

speaking of Diana she was one of the better parts of the movie, as expected, her actress has a good presence and all that.

of course the movie had to comment on how HOT she was ALL THE TIME though. (oh god the bikini armor on some of the Amazons was the worst even worse that i expected)

I do like that Bruce seemed to recognize she should be the one leading the team because YEAH. GLAD YOU’RE ON TOP OF THAT CHUM. And her feeling uneasy about being in the spotlight because of survivor’s guilt over Steve and not wanting another death on her conscience that made...kinda sense i guess. Her arc of getting comfortable with her status as a leader and inspirational figure again after being a behind the scenes hero for so long was nice in some parts. The fact that Bruce of all people called her on it...not so much, but I’m glad the rest of the team was basically like “wow Bruce stfu” and he said sorry. (Cyborg’s “SO ANYWAY WHILE BATMAN WAS BEING AN ASSHOLE I WAS DOING ACTUAL IMPORTANT THINGS” comment was good, that’s my dude right there) (Barry’s “you know if she kills you, we’ll all be on her side” comment to Bruce- how I feel about every Bruce v Diana conflict ever. )

For Barry he was likeable...but he fell heavily into the overdone “funny-autistic-streotype-but-we’re-not-gonna-say-it” bit for me. like. am i out of line here? it was the whole “I don’t understand people what is brunch” speech that pushed it over for me, but idk. it was very weird, and like a lot of the movie, sometimes felt forced.

Cyborg! He was there! He was definitely 80s comic mega-angst “I HATE U DAD” Cyborg which made sense as the Accident had literally just happened and as the movie went on you kind of saw his personality emerge a little- complete with the “boo-yah” thrown out there for us cartoon fans. When a review complained about it i was like “how dare u for once that is something from these movies that caters directly to me” but wow it was delivered immediately after they defeated the bad guy very dramatically so i can see why it stood out to that reviewer so much.

I did think the angle of him hearing weird languages in his head and not knowing what the fuck’s happening made the whole “AM I MAN OR MACHINE” angst a little more relevant. The whole “I’M NOT HUMAN” bit has a bit of a different context now than in the 80s with tech being more accepted, so that was probably needed.

He unfortunately wasn’t terribly memorable, though I did like the “we’re both accidents” bonding moment with Flash and how Diana immediately seemed to decide she was his big sis.

Aquaman...probably shoulda been in it interacting with the others more? The whole vibe he had going could have really worked if they spent more time establishing it and him, but they didn’t, so it...once again...felt kinda forced. I did like that his Mom seems to be the key component to whatever his backstory is though. Well at least ONE male hero’s mom apparently gets to be the complicated heroic figure he has a weird relationship and doesn’t understand instead of like. just. dead.

There were a lot of parts of the movie that would have worked better if i hadn’t seen the movies preceding them. like Bruce’s whole “WE NEED CLARK” and “HE WAS SO IMPORTANT” and “HE WAS MORE HUMAN THAN ME” and “YES I THINK WE SHOULD BRING HIM BACK FROM THE DEAD WITH THIS THING WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW IT WORKS SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN” like...you didn’t even know him Bruce. you guys measured your dicks for twenty minutes and then teams up for two minutes you had no chance to get to know each other. and nah, he actually was equally as annoying and broody and cold as you! You’d know that if you’d ACTUALLY EVER TALKED.

also the opening montage of “THE WORLD IS LOST NOW THAT SUPERMAN WAS DEAD” he was only around for TWO MOVIES guys, he spent MOST OF THOSE MOVIES IN WEIRD FIGHTS WITH ALIENS DESTROYING MAJOR CITIES like the previous movies really did not do anything to establish he was this essential to the world’s hope. In fact the entire last movie was about how the world didn’t really like him all that much.

(especially painful was those white guys yelling at the Muslim lady and that was supposed to be connected to Superman being dead somehow? BIGOTRY ONLY EXISTS BECAUSE SUPERMAN DIED GUYS. IF HE’S ALIVE BIGOTRY IS OVER.)

I think another thing that held the movie back was they basically had to establish half the team. Cyborg’s origin was actually plot relevant (but still didn’t feel fleshed out enough), but for Flash and Aquaman it was very casually thrown in our faces and yeah. Just felt messy.

anyway.

it could’ve been worse. it could’ve also been a lot better. i dunno guys. i really want DC to get their act together, and i know there were a lot of tragic issues with this one. but at this point their only solid offering has been Wonder Woman. It’s...looking grim.

Teas! Quick and Dirty Reviews (with a fandomy bent because why not?)

CAVEAT: I TAKE MY TEA SANS CREAM AND/OR SUGAR. Take that into consideration, especially when I say something tastes “sweet.” Generally, if I say something tastes sweet, most of the normal people reviews are more like “CURES ALL CRAVINGS, DID MY TAXES, SHAGGED ME ROTTEN.”

Chai Town - bought it just before I left Chicago, comes in a cutesy tin, have not actually tried it yet because it has been hot out. Smells fantastic though, like spice and darkness and a little bit of masculinity? IDK - lets call this one the Loki’s workshop tea.

Sleeping Beauty - comes in a pretty tin, really really wish they sold it in bulk/loose leaf. This shit is like a sleeping pill in tea form for me. Even just smelling it makes me calm down. Chamomile, rose, pretty floral, but not in a heavy way. This is my Bruce Banner tea.

Scorpio (Zodiac series) - comes in a KICKASS TIN, tastes delicious. DO NOT OVER STEEP, can become bitter because it’s a black tea. Tastes of mango and chocolate and mystery and secret agents.

Toasted Mate - I have to be in a Particular Mood for this one. It tastes oddly of protein/peanuts to me, but in a good way? Smells earthy/masculine in a Wolverine in flannel after a run through the woods sort of fashion.

Honeybush Pumpkin Chai - This tea turns me into the basic bitch your memes warned you about, but goddamn does it taste good. It’s not overwhelmingly pumpkin, IMHO, it’s more like the spice mix you can buy in the store as “Pumpkin Pie Spice” but also spicier? I would term this “basic bitch with a roundhouse kick” - ie: my Darcy Lewis tea.

Tiger Lily - Have not yet tried, bought it because it smelled like mild sweet coconut and cardamom and vanilla and joy. It smells like waking up next to Steve Rogers on a day when the rain is light and constant and you don’t have to get up anytime soon.

Spiced Cocoa Dreams - It’s a spicy hot chocolate tea (chocolate chai) with red peppercorns and it looks almost as good as it tastes. I imagine that with cream it would be killer, but even taken black it’s just freaking delightful. This is the tea that Tony Stark would serve (and spike surreptitiously behind your back because he likes you and wants to share the Good Booze).

Rooibus Caramel - This is my go-to tea for the end of a long day. It’s smooth and mellow and not overwhelming but it smells nice and it tastes sweet and it’s a lovely golden color. It’s an old reliable for me. Coulson would drink this on weekends because it’s uncomplicated but easily spiked with sugar or alcohol, depending on the need.

Port of Call - OMG, guys, this is in my top five. I drink this shit like I’m radioactive and it’ll cure cancer. It’s got anise and a shitload of other spices but it’s not TOO strong. It’s a little like root beer but at the same time nothing like root beer and my ma tried it with me, dismissed it as “too generic” then wound up craving it a few days later because it’s like a warm quilt and your favorite movie. It’s warm and lovely and layered. It’s Sam Wilson surprising.

Cocomint Green - I keep this one around in case @boromir-queries-sean visits because she likes it. It’s earthy-minty-sweet and quite mild. Clint Barton would drink this after a few too many interludes with dumpsters because mint settles and sweet soothes.

Love Potion - Strawberries and sweetness and cocoa and depth. It’s Natasha Romanova where you think you know her but BAM! Hidden depths! It’s definitely an indulgence and I would qualify this as being kind of dessert like. I bought it in bulk when it was available because yum.

Valentines - Kind of like Love Potion, but only cosmetically. Pepper Potts got shit to do and mornings should taste sweet if you’re gonna have to deal out some sour. It’s strong and dark but not bitter. This was also a holiday tea so IDK if it’s available.

All of the above are teas I bought while still in Chicago. Keep in mind, I gifted tea to several of my favorite coworkers before I left. I gave away probably half of my total tea collection, so I am still in the process of stocking back up for winter. I drink tea more than literally anything else. If you have questions about teas on adagio’s listing, I MIGHT be able to answer them. Keep in mind that I don’t do cream, sugar, or hibiscus (FUCK hibiscus) before asking.

ALSO - this list will not include anything that I love BUT AM CURRENTLY OUT OF *insert crying emoji*. There are a lot of other teas they sell that I drink, but I’m out because I drank it all.
