Or MC just pretends they didn’t hear anything. Going to their next class and trying not to think about what they overheard. But the next time Solomon’s around MC keeps looking at him weird, or acting fidgety and Solomon keeps asking if they feel okay?- maybe he should fix them a snack?- or MC needs a break-

Who is Peccantum?

YOU WANNA KNOW MORE CAUSE I GOT MORE-

Peccantum has an entire wall of his room dedicated to a conspiracy theory about Alastor. Red strings and all. He keeps adding to it as time goes on.

He's got an entire section trying to find codes in the music that plays on the radio, or even within the static of defunct radio stations. There are countless papers trying to figure out what Alastor's symbols mean. All together it leads into his biggest theory; Alastor is a Deer God and is at the hotel for unknown purposes.

Alastor! Does not know about this!

Angel dust DOES know about it. Angel Dust regularly calls it Peccantum's 'Stalker Wall', which Peccantum vehemently denies. He is not a stalker! Sure, he has photos of Alastor that no one is sure how he got, but it's not in a creepy way! It's just to try and figure out how Alastor got as powerful as he is! It's not creepy at all! In fact it's very logical and nicely sorted!

Angel still calls it his stalker wall.

Vaggie tries to get Peccantum to throw it out cause it's a little creepy. (Also because Peccantum tried to convince her that Alastor might be Lucifer in disguise and that Charlie was actually his daughter.) However, Peccantum just finds new places to hide it no matter how many times Vaggie rediscovers it.

Truth be told, Peccantum's only doing this because he's desperate.

He made his deal over 7 years ago, before Alastor disappeared. Peccantum had thought he'd be okay with this arrangement but he wasn't expecting Alastor to just vanish. He wasn't expecting to gain a sense of identity in the Radio Demon's absence. He certainly didn't expect Alastor to come crashing back into his life.

Peccantum's making the board because he feels out of control of his own life. Maybe, Peccantum reasons, if he can figure out what kind of person Alastor is, if he can figure out what he's gotten himself into... Maybe it won't be so bad. Maybe Peccantum didn't make a mistake. Maybe what Peccantum gave away in that deal won't be used against him. Maybe this won't hurt as much as he thinks it will.

That desperation to prove himself wrong slowly slips out and culminates in the conspiracy board. Where he can try to piece together a good ending for himself. Where he can try to have some control over his life. But that control is frayed and untrue.

Eventually, after some sort of conflict, Peccantum admits his reasoning. He begs to be allowed to keep the board, and that no one tells Alastor. Charlie would have to be the one to talk him through why this is a bad habit. He's still uncertain, but he's got Charlie reassuring him that it'll be okay. So, Peccantum would listen and throw out his evidence.

...buuuuut not before Alastor finds out.

Alastor is a bit surprised, but not really disturbed when he finds the mess of red strings and thumbtacks. There were a few photos that he didn't realize were taken of him, but that's it. Most of the stuff on there is well known facts, or absolutely wild speculation. It is amusing to see how worked up Peccantum had gotten over his position as the bellhop. Alastor will certainly appreciate once this mess is all gone though.

It's only after the events of Episode 5 that Peccantum goes back on his promise to Charlie. He starts a new board, this one with a completely different question at its core.

took like three extra weeks but we finally finished cruel summer season 2 😭😭 literally no one cares about this show but hiding it under a cut for spoilers regardless

It was bad. Bad bad so bad. All the dialogue and pacing and story beats felt like we were accidentally just watching actual teenagers hang out and talk all summer and all the “we just learned THIS new thing” end of episode cliffhangers were weeeeeak sauce. It was SO boring

The first season took place over the course of three years but this literally took place all in one year. Not the worst but I don’t think it did them any favors, and the timelines collapsing in on themselves in the end was weird

There were so many extra characters that could’ve been cut and nothing lost. No one in their friend group outside of Megan, Isabella, Boy, and Brother did a damn thing. That poor kid with the camera. Sorry but he just felt like an afterthought. And literally no one else did anything. Same with Megan’s sister that was only in like three episodes. Just get rid of them all who cares

Obviously we were on Isabella’s side the whole time. Megan was awful to her, constantly switching between “ride or die” and then finding any excuse to get pissed off at her. And what even was that situation? Like Isabella just staying with a random family for the whole summer AND a senior year of high school. Idk it was weird

But anyway that big twist reveal was so fucking funnyyyy it was the only joy we felt watching. But they didn’t even do it right bc the scene on the plane should’ve been the finale scene, obvi

And the big confrontation with Luke at the end was so comical. Megan being like “so you slept with both of us and lied and talked about it to your friends???” Like yeah saying it all together like that really emphasizes how nothing happened at all this season lmao

And then Isabella suddenly being CrAzY at the end was like… ok. So she’s crazy. I still support her ♥️

I was also scared they were gonna pull the last minute wlw thing like they did with Kate and Mallory and I was dreading it. Megan could never deserve Isabelle. Thankfully the exact opposite happened so there was also peace in that

its also super cool that the writers used something from REAL LIFE in the story in such a way. like, thats cool as hell, and idk much media that does so

especially bc beast wars is one of very few transformers series to not include any human characters (discounting the monkey pre-humans), so this is a really cool way to involve humanity without having any recurring human cast members

in terms of the plot of the ep, that shit was fucked up. it basically amounted to silverbolt and rampage fighting over transmutate w/little regard for transmutate as a person, and ending w/her dying. which was fucked btw

and the fact that everyone was like ‘oh yea transmutate basically doesnt count as an alive sentient being’ was messed up bc they came to that conclusion very quickly and with only a small amount of data....messed up. also messed up is how the maximals suggested putting transmutate in like, a medically induced coma basically, bc she was a freak of nature. which may be true but STILL, that probably violates some ethical laws. arent yall supposed to be the good guys?!

also rampage trying to befriend and save transmutate was sad...especially knowing his circumstances w/megatron and stuff. just Ls all around

And thanks for chiming in with some pics from the official VIS version! It's interesting to see how they handled the dialogue, and also the little changes they chose to make in certain places.

Like the VIS version of the title page gets the overall message across, but it does lose the vibe of Kurita and Sena just excitedly/timidly extending a request for others to join them in playing American Football, only for Hiruma to come in with the final line and make it a violent demand lol. But I guess with translation, small things like that are difficult to maintain while keeping sentence flow. (also let Hiruma say fuck!! Or more like, 'MOTHERFUCKER!!!' in the case of this title page lol)

RIP poor Sena, only just met his new classmates and they've already scoped him out as gopher material.... :') And yeah, 'go buy me/us food' is a common bully trope in Japan for suuuree, I just figured for those who didn't know that, the line 'go buy us bread' would sound pretty odd. (yakisoba bread is delicious btw, it's basically a hotdog bun stuffed with yakisoba lmfao, just carbs on carbs with umami flavor. EXtremely satisfying.)

Hiruma's speech patterns are so funnyyyy, I love that 糞 is dubbed with ファッキン (fucking), and that he's so consistent about it too. But yeah you're right, I mean I think kuso-(noun) can be pretty biting, but it also depends on context and like, tone. And ファッキン used in Japanese certainly doesn't have the same bite as it does when used in English, so I guesssss I can understand why they settled with 'Damn'. Still, let Hiruma say fuck!!!

Regarding the whole Shumu thing, it's interesting VIS went with 'manager'. It makes sense, and the shumu role doesn't end up being important enough to justify trying to clarify it, but I do wonder how they did Hiruma's dialogue later on when he manipulates Mamori into becoming their manager by saying that it was unreasonable to expect Sena to be able to take on both shumu and manager responsibilities? (I guess they could just have him say that Sena couldn't take on all manager responsibilities by himself or something).

LMAO the 'Renraku-sama' bit always had me go ????? I was like 'is this some sort of reference or idiom that I'm not aware of?' but no it was just some kind of confusion with the word for contact info. I also wonder if they didn't realize that うん is a sound of agreement? Like 'uh-huh' (though the usage is subty different). Or if they thought having Sena agree there made him less sympathetic...? Idk but odd change.

But yeah I have no doubt that the VIS translation is overall superior to the fan scans, even if they occassionally end up sacrificing small things in the name of sentence flow and readability. And I've heard that certain lines are translated in really clever ways!

I'll still use the fan scans for my readalong posts just because I think that's the version most people are familiar with, but it'll be great to have the VIS version handy (up to a certain point lol) for reference! Anyway thanks for the lovely and thorough response, I'm glad people seem to be into this!

ES21 japanese volumes - part 1/??

Sooooo I recently got my hands on the complete Eyeshield 21 manga series in Japanese and as someone who's only ever read the story through fan-translations on dodgy websites online, I wanted to go through and "live" blog about it, so to speak. I thought it would be interesting to see the changes between the languages and where the fan-translations likely fail with mistranslations. (No shade btw, I think fan-translations are great both as a hobby and the fact that they're doing their work for free, but it's also a reality that the vast majority of fan-translators are amateurs, many of whom don't fluently speak the language they're translating, so there's bound to be mistakes!) Also, I wanna know what they're originally saying because I’m nosey <3

I know the official English translation by VIS is allegedly pretty decent, bar the toning down of some things (like Hiruma's language lol) so if you've had the chance to read the official version, feel free to chime in on differences with the fan-translation that I'll be referencing, or potential differences between the Japanese version too!

And finally, while I am half Japanese and grew up there, tragically my language skills are imperfect. I speak it, but my vocabulary isn't very robust, so I do look up the definitions for a lot of words and kanji, as well as more nuanced connotations or references that may go over my head. Bilingual problems <3 But again, it's good practice for me and I think it'll be kind of fun!

Right off the bat, this page. What it’s saying is essentially, “You better come out and play (in the) American Football match!” But because Japanese syntax is different from English, it’s structured like “American Football Match you better play!!” The translator was confused by the final line, because in Japanese a way to say ‘participating in a match’ is by using 出る which means to ‘go out’— sort of like ‘go out (into) the match’. Maybe a better option would have been ‘get the fuck out and play!!” or just “you better fucking play!!”. It still keeps the overall sentence structure which sounds awkward in English, but at least it gets the meaning across.

(I’m not gonna get into every little mistranslation btw, because that would take forever, but I felt that was a good way to explain how frequently there are little mistakes like this.)

Putting the rest under a cut because I imagine this will get long

Look at our boy <3 So as you know, we start our story with Sena Kobayakawa timidly seeing if he passed his high school entrance exam into Deimon High School, with his childhood friend/older sister figure, Mamori Anezaki lending moral support.

In the third panel, what Sena says is actually “I feel like I’ve been praised for the first time in 10 years—” (maybe they changed it because that was too pathetic 😭) Then in the fourth panel, what Mamori says is more along the lines of “And to think you were a total mess in math and English… It’s all thanks to Mamori-sensei!”

Also I want to point out that Mamori is a little cheekier in the first few chapters. Like obviously still kind and nurturing in personality (her name is literally ‘to protect’), but she teases Sena and feels more like an older sister than like, an overprotective mom lol. Miss that for her 😔

Then along comes our kind senpai to accost our clueless protag...

There’s no mistranslation, but I just wanted to mention that the way Hiruma talks in Japanese is so funny? Like in panel 1, he’s speaking with a dramatic affect, he sounds like some sort of npc in a jrpg giving the protag a quest. And then in panel 2, his ‘of course!’ is this shortened, slang version of the word that sounds almost cute and very modern after the previous line. Hiruma uses a lot of slang in general, though I can’t say if any of it is like, common or used by teenagers (of the time, anyway) or if it’s just Hiruma-isms.

I can’t believe Hiruma managed to physically emulate the experience of contracting some shady internet virus…..

Something that’s done with Hiruma’s dialogue a lot (it’s done w/ other characters too, but most often with Hiruma) is where there’ll be a word/term in kanji that means one thing and pronounced in a certain way, but then the romaji (so the phonetic pronounciation, basically) next to it says something different. Now, in some stories (like Berserk for my pals out there), this is used to create poignant, layered meanings in the text. In ES21 however, it’s mostly used for sports manga flavor. For example, in the above page in Hiruma’s spam fax message, he uses the word 作戦, which means tactics or strategy, and is pronounced: “sa - ku - se - nn” さ-く-せ-ん. But the romaji next to that word reads タクティクス which is quite literally just the English word ‘tactics’ spelled phonetically in Japanese lol (aka a loanword).

He does this A LOT, most frequently with sports terminology, where the kanji are pretty dense, technical terms, and the romaji a loanword version of the same meaning. (though now that I think about it, it might also be because while パワー (power) and スピード (speed) are frequently used and well known loanwords to the average Japanese person, タクティクス (tactics) might be more obscure, so the kanji is there to like, clarify the meaning? 🤔)

Also I love all the early 2000’s tech we see in the early chapters— flip phones and fax machines galore! Even within the later segments of the series, the flip phones start to magically get more advanced, but in my heart ES21 takes place in like, 2003. If they ever do a remake of the anime (which is unlikely to say the least) I’d want them to maintain the early 00’s vibes. It just wouldn’t be the same if everyone had smart phones.

Skipping ahead a few pages, I remember this bit never really made sense, but I got enough of the general gist that I kind of shrugged and moved along. But!! the translation is just making stuff up here?

So for context: it’s Sena’s first day at Deimon, and Mamori (who’s a grade above him) advises him to make proper friends this year, since he has a history of only ‘hanging out’ with shitty bullies who used him as an errand boy.

In the English translation, Sena seems to get a text from a mystery number, telling him to pay up for a bet we never saw happening. He goes to meet up with the texter, who we assume at this point is a previous aquaintence, since he had Sena's number? Maybe one of those bullies that Sena hung out with from middle school? They make Sena go and get them an unspecified thing, but because Sena ran there and back so quickly, they don't believe that Sena actually went, and is lying when he says they were sold out. They drag Sena to a small shed to beat him up, and in the last panel of the third page, Sena says that he's been their errand boy since kindergarden?

So for a number of years I was under the impression that the Ha-ha brothers knew Sena from before the series, even though that never seemed to come up in the rest of the story.

But in the original version, Sena is actually getting a text from Mamori-- which makes sense because it was established earlier that his cell phone is brand new and he only has Mamori's number in his contacts. Mamori's text says: "If someone tries to make you run their errands, tell them 'let's decide by rock-paper-scissors!'" Sena is understandably kind of embarrassed by this, and mutters to himself that he's not a kid anymore.

Then it cuts to Sena being picked on to be an errand boy lmao. Presumably this is because Sena just looks like an easy target to bullies, not because of any previous aquaintence rip. The blond bully tells Sena to go buy them bread (which might sound weird, but Japan has a lot of tasty snack breads that they sell everywhere). In panels 2+3 of the second page, Sena timidly tries to bring up the rock-paper-scissors thing, but is intimidated into giving up and just doing what he's told.

Again, they don't believe that Sena actually went all the way to the school store and back with how quick he was, so they decide to beat him up in the shed. As he's being dragged, Sena says, "It really was sold out! I've gotten used to being an errand boy since kindergarden, so I've just gotten fast--!"

So yeah, if there were any other people who've only read fan-translations and were confused by this bit, there you go.

There he is!! Our boy Kurita!! I do miss when he occassionally had like, more human features lol. As much as I love his big ol' smiley face, it does rub me the wrong way when the fat characters (because Komusubi falls into this too) are the only ones with anpanman faces.

Aw look at Sena feeling inspired! Honestly I really love how Kurita is Sena's first friend he makes in the series, and that vibe in the early chapters where it's just Sena, Kurita and Hiruma is so much fun <3

*Ok soooo I don't fully understand what a shumu is lol, or how you'd translate it to English. The word itself apparently means 'person in charge' so? The fan-translation just calls it the manager, but based on something Hiruma says later, I get the impression that the shumu and the manager are technically different roles? But when Mamori becomes the manager later, she takes on a lot of what are allegedly 'shumu tasks', along with Hiruma, so idk. If anyone's read the official VIS translation, feel free to chime in on how they did it, because I'd be curious to know!

That being said, adorable of Sena to think he could have handled that responsiblity at all 😂 our boy has many talents, but being smart and organized is not among them.

Ok fun feelings are over, it's time for pain.

The three bullies from before were waiting to get revenge. The dialogue is a bit different in the original. Juumonji (the blond one) actually says: "That fatso a friend of yours, Sena? Tell me his contact info-- if you do that, we'll let you go." To which Sena timidly and reluctantly agrees. Then Kuroki (the dark haired one) says: "But do you think one bat will be enough? With that brute strength..." In the final panel, Juumonji says: "It's better with just one, since we're gonna call the police beforehand." Togano (with the glasses): "The police?"

Juumonji: "As long as we get him wrapped up in the fight, it'll be fine. We'll say we got these wounds from being assaulted by the fatso with the bat -- We'll get him disqualified from the American Football tournament." One of the others: "Ooohh, smart!"

I guess the overall sentiment isn't that different, but knowing that the initial demand was for Sena to hand over Kurita's contact info with the promise that they would spare him if he obeyed-- and that at first he agreed-- makes his change of heart feel even more significant.

(Sena: "IF YOU'RE GONNA HIT ME, THEN HIT ME!!! I'LL NEVER TELL YOU (Kurita's info)!!!")

Tell 'em Sena!! A part of me sort of wishes the story maintained this serious story beat instead of undercutting it with humor in the next panel (not shown here) but at the same time, ES21 is overall a more lighthearted, comedic story which I love it for, so I don't think I'd like it getting too angsty. I'll always have Berserk in my corner if I want some actual angst lol.

Lol I do love the little details Murata included, like Kuroki taking a swing at Sena as he's biting Juumonji's hand but then totally missing in the fourth panel because Sena's so fast. Also I'm always on the lookout for the kinds of stuff Hiruma buys, snack wise. We know he loves sugarless gum, obv, and drinks coke based on that one time he bought some for himself, Kurita & Sena, but what else are in those bags? I want to know!!

Oh dear god someone get Seren out of the room I know what Gillyweed does to her we don’t need to lock her in a room full of the fumes

Honestly I just can’t get the idea of “Seren spent the entire Gillyweed lesson acting drunk off her ass” out of my head. Normally I don’t think fumes would effect her that much, but they’re literally locked in a warm greenhouse with at least a couple dozen of the plants. That’ll build up

Sign #1 that something’s off: Seren is literally swaying back and forth and humming to herself. Seren. Usually silent, still, and actively taking notes. Just starts spacing out and making noise out of nowhere

Sign #2 that something’s off: She’s slurring her words and giggling. Everyone knows the mess with Peeves has left her more tense than normal and now she’s just... very happy? Out of nowhere?

Sign #3 that something is VERY off: Diego flirts with her and she’s receptive to it. She’s giggling at it, she gives him a “Dieeeeego you’re so funnyyyy.” And like. Rowan, Penny, Tonks, Chiara, and Diego all stop dead. No, no, no something’s really off, Seren always rebuffs Diego’s advances what the actual hell is wrong with her???

And naturally everyone’s starting to notice. Sprout’s getting concerned because she hadn’t noticed it at first, but now all of Seren’s Hufflepuff friends (and Diego) are fussing over her, so she goes over to check on them

All of them are aware of the fact that Seren hates people fussing over her so they start making excuses. “Oh, Professor Sprout, don’t worry, Seren’s just been so concerned about my sister that she hasn’t been sleeping--” “--and she had a bad Flobberworm Sandwich at lunch! It’s uh--” “...reacting badly to the minor head-cold she had this morning?” “...I dunnooooo I feel fin. Fun? Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiine?”

Sprout’s not dumb but even she doesn’t know what’s up. I mean, it’s not like anyone ever has a reaction to Gillyweed. It could be a rare allergy but that wouldn’t cause this. It doesn’t seem to be harmful, Seren’s just... giggly and out of it. Sprout lets her stay but on the grounds that at least one person in the friend group takes her to the Hospital Wing after class

After class the girls let her sit in the corridor for about five minutes before taking her down, but part of the way there they hear “Uhhhhh... Herbology’s about to start. Why are we walking away from the greenhouse?” “Herbology just ended.” “What are you talking about?” “Seren, it’s... it’s almost dinner.” “...I’m sorry, what?”

Yeah, about ten minutes after leaving the classroom she’s completely sober and also can’t remember anything that happened in that class. She’s not even entirely sure this isn’t a prank until she looks at a clock. After that she’s just... baffled

“Did I hallucinate the past two hours???” “What do you remember?” “I don’t know! It’s like I was dreaming! I felt like I was underwater! I said WHAT to Diego???”

Naturally, she refuses to go to the Hospital Wing. Everyone just brushes it off as “Oh, the O.W.L.s just happened, you were probably just coming down from the stress of it and...” “...had a psychological break. You all think I went mental back there.”

Sprout sees her later and asks her about what happened in class and Seren just... *aggressively shrugs*

The only other person who would’ve possibly gone through that situation would be Jacob and I have him getting expelled in his fourth year, before he’d even have a chance to take the Gillyweed lesson. So he’s never experienced it and Seren just actually thinks she went crazy for a hot minute because there’s no history of anyone doing that

Years later once she finds out about her Siren heritage she has an “Oh, that makes sense. That re-contextualizes a lot of things” moment. She then promptly tells Jacob to never lock himself in a room with 20 Gillyweed plants with no other context provided

He doesn’t need it, though, he’s a Legilimens and reads her mind all the time at that point anyway

and this all took place before zhenning ever ranked into top 9.... so to them, this opportunity wouldve been really important for zhenning too, bc maybe he wouldve really needed it to get into top 9. but at least we know now.... he has enough popularity that they made the correct choice and hopefully more people will notice shi mingze as a result

How about Theo having a best friend who has had a completely different childhood to Theo’s?

His best friend’s family are abusive, neglectful and belittle him. His mutation is a partly physical (it is impossible for him to hide his mutation in society) and he has been told his entire life that he is ugly and an embarrassment. But with Sunshine and Theo (and Logan even with his gruff exterior) he finds acceptance and realises that he is worthy of love. It would also be a way for Theo to see the discrimination and hatred other mutants experience.

I really like the idea of Theo having a best friend he can share secrets with, bicker with, play pranks with and basically become inseparable with.

And if Theo was to have a “villain phase” they would argue on the battlefield, using the swear words they made up together when they were like 10; and basically behaving like children rather than a superhero and super villain.

Their interactions on the battlefield could go something like:

Best friend: oh and by the way I asked Daisy out, you idiot!

Theo: what did she say, stupid!

Best friend: she said yes, lardhead!

Theo: that’s great, dogbreath! I told you she liked you. Do you know where you’re going to go for your first date?

Best friend: I heard Gianni’s Italian is nice!

Theo: it is!

Best friend: when you stop being an idiot and come back to Xavier’s we should double date, stupid!

Also a character who really suffers from the flip flopping writing is Manjimutt. In his first episode he just seemed like a sad sympathetic old man who was getting shat on by the universe for no reason whatsoever, and i really wanted to hug him! And in his second episode he fought Roughraff with his bare hands to defend his friends, and actually won! And also helped Roughraff learn that some grownups are cool! And Manjimutt teared up when Nate said he was 'a grownup we can trust', and i was really cheering for him!! And then in his next episode its like he's entirely rewritten?? Now he's friggin pissing in public and sexually harassing underage schoolgirls and this is meant to be harmless and funny?? His quest to be seen as cute like other dogs now seems predatory and gross, and the joke of him being constantly arrested isnt a goddamn joke its YES PLEASE OFFICER THROW AWAY THE KEY

I hate it!! I got really invested in that guy!! Like thats inherantly sympathetic, him being unfairly hated just because he's 'old and ugly', and all this bad luck happening to him when he doesnt deserve it. He was my favourite character for two damn episodes!! Why did it take two episodes to remember to establish WHY this dude is actually hated and actually has all this bad luck?? Why did you make me waste my sympathy on him??

Man i really hope this is one of those cases of the anime changing things, like how Ray O Light isnt Drizzelda's stalker in the gameverse but actually a decent guy and her mutually consensual boyfriend. Cos it feels such a waste to have this concept of a sad dog dad and not let me cherish him and actually make him a massive asshole! GIVE ME AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE WHERE HE IS GOOD MAN

WTF WHY DID THE ANIME GIVE HIM THAT VOICE

Its not just me right, thats a weirdly charasmatic voice? He sounds like some james bond type thing and its really unfitting for his entire plot being about him apparantly being ugly. Why is he a supermodel in voice only..?

Oh but randomly i really like the voice for Walkappa! Such a cutie! His episode was funny with him just walking up and saying hi, and nate and whisper ignoring him and looking at all sorts of other spurious evidence to find a kappa. And then it just ends after that skit and the next episode actually makes fun of how they never resolved that plot thread, with "Calling... Walkappa! (wait when did we get him)" See i like that, a lot of the humour really is great and its just such a buzzkill that you can get caught up in laughing and have your good mood shot by some really meanspirited or creepily sexual moment.

Anyway i loved how earnest Walkappa's voiceactor was when he admitted his deep secret that he likes pizza instead of cucumbers. Tattletell's episode was also very awesome, i love how they made her super tiny and she hops like a frog. She was so cute even while being an asshole!! And walkappa was extra cute when he defeated her by having no embarassing secrets at all. "I like pizza! Sometimes i do the backstroke! You're all my friends!" Nate called him boring for it but i'd say its more wholesome instead. Walkappa confirmed for only good person in this show so far!

Oh also i really really really really really REALLY hate how the Obligatory Straight Romance is handled between Nate and Katie so far. We have NO IDEA why Nate even likes Katie except for looks, and he's always doing selfish stuff to try and score a date with her. And like we barely know any of Katie's personality either except that she seems to accidentally say insensitive things without meaning to, and then she got inspirited by a yokai that makes you tell secrets and it got even worse. And then in the hungramps episode Nate is a MASSIVE ASSHOLE to Katie and is all "ugh she's eating burgers she's gonna get fat and i wont like her anymore" and then he says to her face that she "looks terrible" even though the animators didnt bother to make her look any different at all. And then later on he uses another yokai to erase her memory of being mad at him so he doesnt have to face the consequences. Im glad at least that that one backfired in his face! So yeah ALL WE EVER SEE of this supposed romance is nate being horrible to her, nate being horrible to otjer people in order to win her, or her being horroble to him but at least its mildly more forgiveable cos it was an accident. But still there are some really contrived accidents! So honestly she kinds seems like an asshole too and she's just lying or something...

Oh but Wazzat is cute and i liked how its episode was the first sorta high stakes episode of a yokai actually fighting nate instead of just causing mischief. It was a lil scary how thos goofy voiced hat went from comedy to talking about its tragic backstory and feeling so betrayed that it was gonna go all out in battle! But it was sweet that nate learned his lesson FOR ONCE and also helped heal the loneliness of this weird hat friend.

...aaaand then last minute twist ending where poor wazzat's happiness gets pulled away at the last second. Literally "dont worry i'll be your friend, all you wanted is someone who wouldnt forget you" and then wazzat accidentally uses its powers to erase everyone's memory and they stop being its friend again. AND THE EPISODE JUST ENDS

I keep telling myself i'll try and remember its just a comedy show and not get invested in any of the characters but GAH if youre even slightly invested in them it gets infinately less funny!
