Seren Dwyn is officially The Most Powerful Witch at Hogwarts
I’m actually not totally sure where I want to go from here, so I’m open to suggestions if anyone has any. The options I’m mulling over are:
Continue to stay at this point in the story in case Rowan ever shows up in any quests ever again (unlikely, but not impossible)
Actually get caught up with the main story (not only are my Clubs close to the Y6 cap, but they’re all queuing up 125 Energy handouts that I could use to blow through a good chunk of the story very fast. Continuing on would unlock more Friendships to actually do something with rather than just spamming Talbott for Gems like I have been doing. Also, now that the level cap is increased, End-of-Chapter Exp won’t be wasted)
Hold off on the main story until the current Quidditch season is over, since I assume this will be the last season, for continuity reasons (not that I REALLY care, since I don’t even consider the Quidditch storyline part of Seren’s story, but you know)
For once, I’m actually leaning towards “continue the story” since I don’t really have anything else left to do at this point, but I’d love to hear other people’s opinions

Seren Dwyn for @bluerosesburnblue
Oh hey! What have I been busy doing lately? Making some edits for some special, meaningful people in my life I was fortunate to have met on here! Which also included a lot of snooping researching on their blogs =p I honestly had a lot of fun making these, even if I was stressing myself out making them perfect and am still unsure if I’m 100% happy with them all, but then maybe I just need to make some more some time… 😉
Oh you thought I forgot about you @bluerosesburnblue - aha! Think again! 😜
The wonderful Seren Dwyn! Of course I wanted to showcase her siren blood, love of magical creatures, and her being the flying animagus of our friends =p And I was soo excited to learn about Seren’s talent and interest in watercolour so I did a last minute change actually to include that in here because I love that new bit of information for me to learn about her. But really, my favourite image I found was that Private Detective office door - umm….yes! 😍 I saw it and instantly thought of Seren and Jacob! I hope I did her justice.
Oh Liz… You know I love you and how brilliant I think you and your analyses are, right? Because I do!!! I am beyond overjoyed and fortunate that I met you and get to consider you a friend. Truly feel blessed to have your presence in my life. Love you! 💖💖💖

THE MOON COURT ruled by the personification of the moon and unseelie, Dwyn, coming to birth from the season personification of winter. the court is about mystery, the circle of life and constant change, it is about constant movement and flow: the water, time itself and life are all a constant changing thing, unexpected and containing a lot of mysteries. the court pertains to ones longing for a deeper connection with the overall flow, changes and the inner self.
faes of this court are a combination of both winter and autumn faes, any fae that feels a restless change within them, like they don't belong where they are, is usually the kind o fae that is led into the moon court. The faes of this court nurture a deep connection with their core, striving to better understand themselves and follow the lead of change confidently, for they know their bond towards the moon is the only true thing that was always real and always there.
These faes are skillful in hiding, manipulating and making use of the shadows. There are various different type of personalities as they come from different previous courts which you'd think it would be a mess but despite all that, as they are together they all are in harmony even without knowing each other because all their bonds are deep within each other.
the court is floating somewhere above the sea, hidden behind clouds during the day and shining bright during the night. If you were to walk in during the day inside the court you'd notice that the place is still in nighttime, or a rather lighter night than a normal one, then when the sun sets outside of the court then it gets much darker than a normal night. Because of the serene silent nature, the court also seems eerily empty if you just walk in, however if you look closely, the faes are everywhere within the shadows and the moonlight.
the faes of this court are close to the elements of water and snow that are the main ones of the beloved moon.
Dwyn himself has an unpredictable behavior that changes every time, his moods are always in constant change and yet he is always will be found and will find the ones that call him and his light. He is quiet spoiled and his mood swings can go as far as murder a lot of times, however aside from casual dislike, all the faes within his court still respect and love him and would never wish to break their connection with him. He too treasures his court despite the mood swings and always baths them in his soothing light, offering them dedicated protection and power. The bond between them and dwin is very much a mirror image of the one that the sun court has, of undying and unconditional loyalty.
there are no humans residing within the court itself but there are several humans with their souls deeply connected to the moon. The humans seeking the moon are usualy the type of the outcast and the lonely, the one that has never felt like they belong somewhere, and they too receive a part of Dwyn's light to guide them and make them feel less alone.

walpurga-nacht-academy: "like a magpie, i am a scavenger of shiny things: fairy tales and dead languages." for Dwyn!
Thanks for the ask! :3c
Dwyn quite enjoyed reading. Perhaps not in the sense associated with Grimmaire, where they sought after every bit of knowledge their inquisitive minds could grasp, stopping at nothing to learn the most they can in life.
They enjoyed adventuring and experiencing the unknown, or revisiting wonderful places, all in the comfort of their home within a few days. They loved the beauty books held in their pages, beautiful words painting vivid descriptions of realms outside of reality, veering into the great imagination of authors throughout decades and centuries. A feeling of serenity and satisfaction washed over them as they sunk deep into the fantasies presented in the span of a story, immersing themselves where their keen senses could almost pick up on the faint rustling of leaves, or the warm sunshine on their skin.
They read in a variety of languages, learning and picking up new words along the way as they studied each work of art. Some may argue that works of the past were outdated, casually tossing away brilliant pieces because they couldn’t be bothered to understand the language. Dwyn always scoffed at these people. Words were not for everyone, perhaps, but it was utterly foolish. They found so much joy in discovering new and even ridiculous terms used here and there, common slang or niche specific phrases used once and never again. So many fun words that they had no doubt would be trendy now had they not been forgotten, they were simply too fun to be ignored, if only people read.
One may find it peculiar to discover the typically visually artistic student in the library, a mountain of novels, fairy tales, poetry books, stories and more next to them like a dragon with its horde. To that, Dwyn can’t help but giggle at their simplicity, for literature is art.

Birthday gift for @bluerosesburnblue, about Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery (our two OCs from it meeting). Though keep in mind, that I’m only on chapter two... So a lot of this is probably wrong. Maybe best to think of it as an AU?
In the End
Rapunzel wanted to befriend this girl, Seren—who was mysteriously looking for her own brother, while Rapunzel was doing the same thing—and who seemed like the strongest person to ever exist... but she wasn't sure how. Seren just seemed so... intense. And she was so focused on finding her own sibling, that sometimes Rapunzel felt bad that there were times she herself cared more about the Vaults than Jake. But even though Seren seemed so adamant about nothing but her quest… she had many friends: Something that Rapunzel didn't have at all, save her boy friend, Ronan... So that sort of put Rapunzel off, too.
It probably wasn't very Ravenclaw of her—since with her intelligence, she should have believed she was worth something for that... if nothing else—but Rapunzel couldn't help feeling there was something wrong with her, for not having friends: That just something about her genetic makeup drove people away. But if she was such a good friend with her cat Tree—who was such a good judge of character—maybe she could manage it with Seren, as well. So getting over herself some—since wasn’t self-consciousness selfishness in its own right?—Rapunzel went and knocked on the door to the Hufflepuff Common Room:
Something that was very Muggle of her to do, she knew—and she wasn’t even sure it would work—but the blue-haired girl did so all the same.
Thankfully, it only took a few raps on the door for the Hufflepuffs to hear it and for Nymphadora Tonks to answer it with a smile on her face …
Which slightly disappeared when she saw it was Ravenclaw, their rival House that had come calling, but it quickly came back.
“Hi. What can I do for you?” Tonks asked with nothing but pep in her voice—which somehow made Rapunzel wonder if her and her friends had been doing something mischievous. If so, she wished them the best of luck with it.
“…I was wondering if I could talk to Seren Dwyn?”
Unlike Tonks’ hair—that was a gorgeous baby pink and very welcoming right now—Rapunzel thought her blue locks were probably more sad looking than anything:
In fact, her hair surely looked as though it was getting whiter and whiter with her nervousness.
But it was what it was.
At the question, Tonks’ eyebrows squeezed up in concentration—and it wasn’t hard to guess that she was thinking about the Vaults, and that maybe Seren had asked another’s help with them—but upon giving it a moment, Tonks replied: “Actually, conveniently, she’s right behind the door here. And she seems ready to meet you, so I’ll send her your way.”
Which Tonks did:
She seemed to literally push Seren out the door—though the brunette seemed none the worse for wear for it—and then she and Rapunzel were heading away.
“So, what did you want to talk about?” Seren asked rather exuberantly. Seren had been wearing her robes when she’d joined Rapunzel. But maybe in realizing how hot it was on this floor, she quickly took it off—revealing a blue outfit underneath—when she began speaking.
“…That’s, perhaps, something we should keep quiet. So, can we wait until we get to the Room of Requirement?” Rapunzel whispered into Seren’s ear.
And when Seren nodded ever so slightly at the question, Rapunzel saw it as her cue to continue leading them away.
Rapunzel wasn’t sure if Seren knew about the Room of Requirement or not—all she’d done was raise an eyebrow when it had been mentioned—so Rapunzel thought it best to take Seren there and unlock the room herself, just in case.
And just like that, they were getting close to the room that had magicked Rapunzel’s homework for her when she’d lost it one time.
“Please… give us a room where we can confide in each other secretly,” Rapunzel requested of the room, just as her feet touched where the door would be the moment it became corporeal.
A few beats passed—to which Rapunzel and Seren looked at each other meaningfully, wondering if something was wrong—but the door to the Room opened, and then Rapunzel and Seren were scampering into it.
And deciding not to make Seren wait any longer, when they were free of any eavesdropping ears—because she hadbrought her on a strange adventure—she took a deep breath, and laid her heart out on the line, digging her nails into her arm as she did so.
“This is going to sound… mad to you. And you may not even believe me… But I also have a brother named ‘Jacob’—Jake, really—who went missing. And it had to do with the Cursed Vaults for him, too… Though I don’t know if it was before or after 1984. I think something’s wrong with me… making me not remember.”
Thankfully, Rapunzel didn’t get the suspicious or disbelieving look that she had thought she would here—that she maybe deserved—but instead, Seren had put a hand under her own chin and was “hmm”ing.
It was very Ravenclaw of her, if Rapunzel said so herself.
“That’s really sad, that you don’t remember when your brother was taken. I’m sorry! I can’t even imagine how much pain I would be in, if I didn’t even know when my Jacob disappeared… It makes me think a memory charmmust be in play here. Have you thought about having someone like Madame Pomphrey take a look at you?”
Sighing, as she sat down in front of a table—that had a newspaper about how to locate missing siblings on it?!—Rapunzel ran a hand down her face, before she decided to go full-on Muggle and maybe (unfortunately) lose Seren along the way.
“I have considered it… Except that there are ways to have your memory tampered with in the Muggle world, too—I know this stuff because I’m Half-Blood—and my family fears non-witches and wizardsmight have done something to us… And ironically, if Muggles have messed with your memories… you don’t want to make it seem like you’re noticing it to them.”
Even with the Vaults, Rapunzel was concerned that this was mostly some sort of government conspiracy—had they learned of Hogwarts?—that would end with her and her family at the bottom of a sea, with cement tied to their feet… Not that they wouldn’t have been able to escape that, but still.
At that, Seren’s heart seemed to go out to Rapunzel even more, if that was possible (with something in her eyes that seemed to hint that she knew a few too power-hungry world leaders herself).
She put a reassuring hand on Rapunzel’s shoulder—that she was only too greedy to lean into—and said, “Oh, man. That’s horrible if it’s true. And you can reallybet that I’ll help you now…
“But I also feel like—if that’s the case, and you’re not letting the ‘government’ see your emotions—you’ve been keeping too much bottled up about your brother and need to cry. So why don’t you go ahead and do so now?”
In the back of her mind—while she appreciated Seren’s sentiment—she found the notion that she could just magically turn on the emotions she had turned off (for anyone but Ronan) kind of ridiculous… And yet that was exactly what happened.
Rapunzel ugly cried—sounding like a screaming flamingo here and there as she did, she was sure—as tears stained her face… but finally she got it all out, and did feel better for it.
She’d been ignoring just what she’d lost with her brother too long now, and she wouldn’t do it anymore.
“Remember that anything’s possible, Rapunzel. Especially at Hogwarts, where there are hidden rooms and staircases move. Maybe it isn’t even connected to America, where you live… If you’re missing your sibling, I wanna help. And maybe by doing so, it’ll help me find my best friend, too.”
Rapunzel, through her tears, saw Seren reach her hand out to her in a pinky swear.
And Rapunzel readily took it for what it was: a sign of companionship for them, too:
And to show that this friendship wasn’t one-sided, Rapunzel handed Seren some Wizard Card misprints, that we’re all dated with the year Jacob disappeared and the ones that Jake could’ve.
She also promised Seren that she’d enlist the genius Ronan’s help, to which Seren answered she’d do the same with her own friends.
Seren smirked at her, and Rapunzel had never felt safer.
They were going to do this.
Author’s Note: So, I sort of had to tone Rapunzel down for this--because otherwise the two girls would essentially have the same story, doing the same stuff (I also had to make crap up, like Rapunzel thinking Muggles are involved in her case, to keep that from being true). But oh well:) Liz, you sort of did that with Sanya in the Kingdom Hearts X comics you did with our characters for me, so it’s totally fine that I’m doing the same for you here.
And it is sort of fitting, that Rapunzel is just starting out exploring the Vaults in this--and Seren is the seasoned veteran with it--since you started this game before me (and are ahead of me), and got me into it:)
Also, “Ronan” in this is the boy version of Rowan. Since you have the girl version of her. And I made the name Ronan, since... once again, we’re not supposed to be the same characters with the same story here. So even though that’s clearly who my Ronan’s based on, I’m saying my Ronan and your Rowan aren't the same character;)

You know what it’s always a good time for?
Dwyn Sibling Angst
(This one’s a big one so I’m putting the explanation under the cut)
So who remembers the Patronus sidequest?
Way, way back when I posted that first ever bio of Jacob and Seren I made brief mention of Patronuses, namely what theirs would be and the fact that Seren would not be able to cast it unless Jacob was found alive. I later made brief mention that I’d finalized the Patronuses to a Sea Lion for Jacob and a Common Seal for Seren, but I never actually elaborated on why Seren would have trouble with the spell
That’s because I started this stupid, elaborate project back when the quest came out and just never finished it, so here we go. Let’s finally talk about Seren’s Patronus issues
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have this tendency when applying sidequests to Seren to just make up my own timeline that’s completely divorced from both what year the quest claims it takes place in and what year I actually ended up playing it in. In the case of Unleash Your Patronus, I actually do put it in Year 4 like the game suggests and not Year 5 when I played it
The Patronus Charm, as far as we know, has three requirements: strong magical skill, a “worthy” heart, and the ability to muster up and sustain a happy memory
Pass, pass, hard fail
Seren is not a happy person. I wouldn’t even say she’s a positive person. If it looks like she’s being positive, it is almost always performative to try and ease someone else’s nerves. This girl is a giant ball of nerves that gets angstier and more traumatized every year and she cannot shut her emotions off. Not that she can’t be happy, she can, but it’s far from her default state since the anxiety tends to run through worst case scenarios all the time
Complicating things is that her happiest memories are all things involving Jacob, who is decidedly not there. The reason I set this in Year 4 is because we don’t even have the Forest Vault message that he’s in the next Vault yet. He could legitimately be dead for all anyone knows in Year 4. So positive memories are of Jacob which, oops, reminds her that he’s still gone. Which then triggers the worst case scenario machine that is her brain
So, alright, let’s assume that Seren manages to shove that down. She’s just focusing on the memory, maybe even repeating “I’m gonna find him and we’re gonna do that thing from our childhoods again” to keep from getting distracted. Cue the actual form of Seren’s Patronus
I picked the Common Seal and Sea Lion for the Dwyns for a variety of reasons. I was already giving them the same Animagus form, figured I’d switch it up for the Patronuses. Make them “related” and symbolizing similar things, but not the same (also reference that merperson heritage). I’ve also always been a fan of the idea that sometimes particularly strong memories can shape the Patronus thanks to the fact that sometimes people with an obsession with an animal have their Patronuses take that form, and then there’s this quote:
"[...] the Patronus often mutates to take the image of the love of one's life (because they so often become the 'happy thought' that generates a Patronus)."
And now we have the earliest memory Seren has. She’s three years old and Jacob’s eight. They go to the aquarium. It’s one of the few times they’ve ever gone out somewhere as a family and she’s just completely enamored with the whole thing. She really falls in love with how cute and graceful the seals are, to the point where she spends part of the trip after they’ve moved closer to the gift shop camped out with the seal plushies just... looking at ‘em. Jacob notices and convinces their parents to buy her one. It’s her absolute favorite toy as a kid, and one of the few things she brings to Hogwarts every year, without fail
It’s not a memory she thinks of much. It wasn’t even the memory she was using to call forth her Patronus, despite being her first happy memory. And yet, there it is, played out in front of her in a brilliant light show. This time, though, Jacob isn’t there. Fighting down the instinct to whirl around and show it to him is just another reminder that he hasn’t been found yet and may never be and what if he isn’t-
-and it’s gone.
So even if Seren manages to fight through her natural tendency to make everything worse in her head, what her Patronus looks like will just send her spiraling right back into it. And once she sees it the first time - that’s it. Now she knows what her Patronus is and dreads seeing it again so much that she can’t focus on anything else when casting it. A dread that’s strong enough that she wouldn’t be able to muster up even an incorporeal Patronus
That’s why she just can’t cast a Patronus unless Jacob’s found alive, and mentally sound, and noooooot evil
If the Vault situation isn’t resolved with a happy ending, that’s all permanent. Jacob’s evil, Jacob dies, whatever, that’s an automatic no Patronus at all. If that incident from Year 6 Chapter 18 is real and permanent but Jacob’s fine, that gives her the most inconsistent incorporeal Patronus at best and the only reason it can manifest at all is because it’s form has no ties to the spoiler character so the dread factor is gone
The best timeline will probably result in Seren being able to cast an incorporeal Patronus consistently, a corporeal Patronus fairly consistently in low-pressure scenarios, and managing to find a workaround regarding a corporeal Patronus by having Jacob just send his most terrible jokes at her via Legilimency in high-pressure situations. Even in the best case scenario, she still struggles with maintaining positivity and is riding solely on her support network
I let her become an Animagus at age 15, I had to give her some weaknesses. (Relatedly, she also struggles with Riddikulus and can only perform it consistently due to intense practice thanks to the Vault of Fear)
------------
Furthermore, Jacob and Seren’s Patronuses are what they are because:
Seals and Sea Lions tend to get shoved together when searching for symbolism. A Patronus represents the “hidden inner self” that is called forth in times of need. So then I have to come up with something that can represent both Jacob and Seren, but being just different enough to represent the nuances between their personalities.
Common traits associated with them are playfulness (more overt with Jacob, but Seren is still mischievous and can be goofy), creativity/big imagination (extremely applicable to both of them), adaptability (which goes hand-in-hand with their creative aspects), faith (normally self-faith. Seren lacks it so perhaps this symbolizes what she needs to develop. Both have faith in others), independence, and balance (with the two finding balance with each other, losing it, then regaining it later in life)
To separate them I looked at behavior. Seren gets the Common Seal due to their quiet nature and tendency to remain largely solitary. The introverted one
Jacob gets the Sea Lion because they’re LOUD and DON’T EVER STOP BEING LOUD and prefer being in larger groups. The (somewhat more) extroverted one
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, here’s the still .png for the key frame in the .gif with the Patronus in it because I liked it a lot
Tumblr media
And there it is. The big Patronus explanation writeup. I’m so glad it’s done
I started this damn thing after I finished the Patronus quest. Like, the day after or even the day of. And then I stopped for some reason! And then a few months ago I was like “hey, that was almost done and Dementors are coming back into the story, why not finish it?” Didn’t get it done in time for that update. And then that update was Year 6 Chapter 18 and I lost all motivation I had
So here! Fine! Happy one year and one day anniversary of when the Patronus sidequest came out!
Now please take this thing out of my sight

In honor of the release of the Summer Romance Festival event (finally!) I figured it was about time that I announce who I’ve decided was going to be Seren’s endgame love interest: it’s Talbott!
As much as I love Charlie and like the idea of him as a school-years crush, I don’t see him ever being willing to drop working at the Romanian Dragon Reserve, and the more I think about it, the less I can see Seren ever being willing to leave the Detective Agency and Jacob
Deciding on Talbott was a bit of a two-part thing. I was always planning on having him and Seren being very close, even as adults. Their friendship has always stemmed from their similar personalities (and identical senses of humor), but Talbott provides temperance for Seren’s more reckless endeavors, while Seren provides this push outside of his comfort zone that Talbott needs without being disrespectful of his boundaries. Also, I just always found it funny that I picked the raven for Seren’s Animagus form, since ravens and golden eagles are natural rivals, sometimes working together as the raven feeds off of the eagle’s leftovers, sometimes butting heads over territory. It was such a perfect summary of their relationship that I couldn’t pass it up
The relationship would only get stronger as they helped each other cope with the massive amounts of grief in each of their lives
The first thing that made me seriously consider Talbott was the Valentine’s quest. Talbott’s been my date of choice since he was introduced, and while I don’t consider any of the romance quests as “canon” to Seren’s story, Talbott’s dialogue was just. Too. CUTE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These lines in particular were just too good
The other thing was actually a conversation I had with @wilhelminafujita regarding one of her Auror OCs and how the Dwyn Detective Agency would work with the Auror’s office when they’re established (spoilers, the Dwyns are chaotic and will work either with or against the Ministry at any given moment). But that led me to the thought of Moody using one of Seren’s friends who works for him to convince the Dwyns to help in various situations. I was thinking Tonks, but then I remembered “oh, duh, TALBOTT wants to be an Auror!”
And, quite frankly, it worked out too well. Not only is the Auror/Private Detective relationship a perfect representation of the Golden Eagle/Raven relationship, but with the Dwyns based in Diagon Alley that means that both Seren and Talbott would be working out of London, and working so many of the same cases that they’d see each other very often. They’re both lonely people, who could easily find comfort in seeing a familiar face from their childhood every day. I could easily see Talbott harboring a crush on Seren during their school days that persists into adulthood, and Seren growing to realize just how much she’s fallen for Talbott later on after graduation
So Seren/Talbott it is
And a bonus because with friends like Jacob and Tonks, well...

It’s just now occurring to me that Seren/Talbott makes significantly more sense if you know how I’ve re-written several sidequests to better fit Seren’s personality, which I keep forgetting is not how canon went because half of these quests came out way too long ago and I’m far too attached to my rewrites
The only things that Talbott knows about Seren in Year 1 are that when she was announced for their sorting ceremony a LOT of people started whispering (about Jacob, the Dwyn Family getting kicked off of the Sacred Purebloods list, etc.) and that she sits in front of him during Transfigurations. Once he hears about what Jacob did, his curiosity is settled and he doesn’t think about her at all
I’m putting the Hagrid’s Birthday timed quest to Year 2, after you help Hagrid save Fang. That would make sense of the fact that Fang has a name and Merula’s dialogue about Dumbledore giving MC 100 House Points. And Hagrid’s birthday is December 6, so… that’s when the quest happens! December 6, 1985. (Probably starts a few days earlier, like the 3rd or 4th to account for party planning time)
This is relevant because of the moment where MC is keeping watch of Fang while Merula and Ismelda are teasing Talbott in the background by levitating his clothes and flinging him around. In the canon version of that quest, a Niffler (possibly Sickleworth since the quest came out after he was introduced?) chases them off. But, since I’m putting it in Year 2 before Rakepick is at Hogwarts there’s no reason for that Niffler (assuming it is Sickleworth) to be there
In my rewritten version it’s Seren who goes over and chases them off, because she’s not oblivious and even in Year 2, when she’s still super shy, she’s not just gonna let Merula pull something like this. It’s one of those rare moments in the early years where you can catch a glimpse of who Seren’s going to become, where she gets very assertive and fearless. It’s only because she’s defending someone else at this time, it’ll start to become her default state in later years
Of course, she’s still extremely shy and awkward and so is Talbott, so when she asks him if he’s okay he just... freezes and doesn’t say anything. And Seren doesn’t know what to do so after, like, 30 seconds of silence and just staring at each other she just kinda nervously screeches “OKAY, GREAT,” and jogs off with Fang
This is the moment that Talbott starts taking real notice of Seren. He hasn’t had anyone stick up for him like that. He remembers her sorting, now he’s trying to put together a profile of her. Figure out what she’s all about. He’s so curious, she seems so similar to him sometimes, but then she gets these bursts of confidence. Part of him wants to drop it, he figures it doesn’t matter. But then Penny (who is both Seren’s friend and her roommate) starts tutoring him in Potions and she’s telling him all these stories and he’s just getting even more invested in figuring out “what’s the deal with Seren Dwyn?”
Seren doesn’t remember the incident at all. It wasn’t the first time she’d ever chased Merula off from bullying someone, and her mind was preoccupied with party planning so she just never thought about it again. She won’t remember it even happened unless Talbott brings it up, and her response is just going to be “Wait. That was you? WAIT-”
After that moment in Year 2, they don’t interact again until Year 5. Talbott has been keeping an eye on her out of sheer curiosity for years and Seren hasn’t thought about him at all
So, that brings us to the Animagus quest, which I changed a lot. Not that there was necessarily anything wrong with it, but it was the first Timed Sidequest and was teased for long enough that I’d... kind of already plotted out how I wanted most of it to go by the time it did. Also, a good chunk of it didn’t fit with Seren’s character at all
So, first of all, third year? For one of the most difficult pieces of Transfiguration magic? Uagadou school teaches it to 14-year-olds, so it’s possible, but they’re teaching it professionally and MC is flailing about with just Talbott and Penny figuring it out in the canon quest, so I’m gonna give that year a no. Also, it makes more sense for this to occur after the second Rita quest, otherwise why would Dumbledore have to explain Animagi and the registry if MC’s already an Animagus? Personally, I’m placing the start of it in late November of fifth year (1988 – maybe January 1989)
I’m also not a fan of the fact that we’re doing this just because Penny wants to brew a tough potion. Personally, I don’t see Seren and Penny as that close. They’re friends, but I generally play it more like Penny’s more invested in their friendship than Seren is. Not to mention it completely kills any sense of agency MC has, and I’m really not a fan of all of their friends trying to force a potentially dangerous, potentially illegal life choice on them for reasons such as “I want to brew a tough potion!” and “It would be cool!” If Penny or Seren messed up even a little she could end up as a half-human-half-animal amalgamation permanently! Think of Hermione’s Polyjuice Potion mishap from Chamber of Secrets but for the rest of your life. Seren would make a life-changing, potentially dangerous decision like this for Jacob’s sake only. So the rewritten motivation is looking for any edge on the search because she’s getting frustrated that it’s been five+ years since he’s disappeared and she still can’t find him, but she has found notes suggesting that he was an unregistered Animagus (such as the potion recipe being in his room)
She’s partially trying to figure out what Jacob’s Animagus form is. If it’s informed by your personality and everyone tells her she’s “just like her brother”… then maybe her form would be close enough that she could figure out what his is (or, in a lucky break, exactly the same as his)
She gets the idea after the second Rita quest, and spends the end of Year 4/beginning of Year 5 studying up on the Animagus process and looking for any opportunity to make it work
And, because Year 5 is the year she’s stuck in detention and thus, under intense scrutiny from the faculty, it opens up opportunities to sneak out for the Vault search if she needs to so she sees little downside in trying
Seren would not be open about doing this. So cut out pretty much any friends being told about it or getting directly involved. This is a Secret Seren Project, which is pretty typical of her, actually
She’s also not gonna have Penny just brew the whole dang potion. In fact, she’s not gonna involve Penny at all. (Seren’s capable of doing things on her own, game. She doesn’t need Penny to stand next to her and tell her what to do every time she tries to brew a potion). Because she has no intention of registering (it would defeat the point of using it to sneak around), she doesn’t want anyone involved because then they become accomplices. Also, Seren just likes doing things for herself. I think she’s a little offended every time Penny refuses to let her brew potions for the Vaults
Also, no McGonagall involvement! She’s not planning on registering. Why would you tell a teacher you’re gonna commit a crime?
The only time Professor McGonagall gets involved is Seren asking theoretical questions about the Animagus process under the guise of both OWL studying and because Seren’s just known to ask questions about theoretical magic (“Do potential Animagi keep the leaf in their mouth to absorb saliva from all parts of a biological lunar cycle, or is it more a demonstration of perseverance to focus the soul?”)
So the actual meat of the quest starts pretty much the same. Tulip and Barnaby bring up Talbott at lunch one day and Tulip mentions that he seems to know a lot about Animagi. Seren shows mild interest, but not much beyond that (“What? Seems like a lot of work for not much help, to be honest.”) Secretly, she’s ecstatic because she’s finally got a chance at making an Animagus transformation work beyond what she’s read about it (the potion she could do on her own, but he might be able to show her the spell and probably won’t turn her in to the wizard cops)
She asks Talbott about it at dinner when all of her friends are gone and she’s pretty sure nobody’s around to hear it. Talbott still overheard them, and still references it, but it’s more of an “I heard what you were discussing at lunch” thing. She asks him what he knows, they do their little back-and-forth. Then he brings up that she’s got a reputation for helping people with occasionally sketchy things with no questions asked (*cough*CHARLIE AND THE DRAGON EGG*cough*) and she’s pretty forthcoming about it (“Just keep in mind that I’m both a Prefect and in eternal detention, so request wisely.”)
Secretly, Talbott is very excited. Seren contacted him first and finally gave him an excuse to follow her around and finally get those answers about what her deal is that he’s been craving for years. He’s not even thinking about her as a possible friend or anything, he just wants to figure out what makes her just... act for the sake of others, completely without thinking about damage to herself, and with such wild conviction that every year she seems to outdo herself in wild success with tasks that should be way above the average student’s skill. Part of it reminds him of his parents, but he’s also just found her so interesting from afar (made even worse when Seren goes through her drastic change in presentation at the start of Year 4 and starts acting like she did when she chased Merula off all the time). She’s like the world’s most intricate puzzle
In this rewrite, Talbott is still looking for potion ingredients for Penny, but they’re not for an Animagus potion. They’re for the Draught of Peace that she’s making to help out Madam Pomfrey because she’s being overwhelmed with kids coming in overly stressed about OWLs and NEWTs, and Penny knows what it feels like to be so stressed that you feel you need the potion (but she also respected Seren’s advice to not take it to deal with the Beatrice situation, at least not without Madam Pomfrey’s supervision). It ends up being a “you scratch my back, I scratch yours” between Talbott and Seren. Help me break into Filch’s office to get confiscated potions supplies because Professor Snape won’t let Penny borrow enough to make all of the Draught of Peace that she wants to, and I’ll teach you what I know about being an Animagus. Talbott has them pick up the materials for the Animagus potion while they’re collecting stuff for Penny. He’s tempted to ask Seren about herself, but just ends up staying silent and watching how she handles getting the ingredients
Seren is way less pushy about being Talbott’s friend than MC is in the quest. She still teases him about his use of “we” but it’s more of a partners-in-crime jab. Like, it’s Seren. She can relate to everyone thinking you’re a weirdo. She can relate to wanting to go solo and avoid people. She’s not even sure how she has friends, they just sort of happened. So when Talbott says “I fly solo,” Seren doesn’t tell him “everyone needs friends,” she says “Understood. But I’m here to help if you ever need some.”
They deliver Penny’s stuff and she’s honestly surprised they’re hanging out. Talbott insists that Seren’s only there because he needed to get into Filch’s office, Penny buys it because this really isn’t the first time Seren’s helped someone without question. Heck, this isn’t the first time Seren’s done weird things to get potion ingredients for her. So Talbott gets to teaching Seren about the Animagus transformation (and supervises her. They’re not friends! But he doesn’t want her to get seriously injured doing this. This is the girl that stuck up for him years ago)
Because it’s Seren, she’s got the entire Animagus process planned down to the second. She’s scheduled her leaf-in-mouth thing to overlap with Christmas break, which she plans to spend in Hogwarts and won’t need to talk to anyone during (Wed. Nov 23 –  Fri. Dec 23 1988, with Dec 23 – Sat. Jan 21 1989 as a backup date if she swallows the leaf. She’s praying for luck with the full moons). She’s got an old-fashioned windup alarm and an almanac to get the times for dawn and dusk right (and Christmas break means she’ll have the dorm room to herself, so she won’t wake up her roommates and give away what she’s doing). She’s even got some gum to secure the leaf to the roof of her mouth/under her tongue
Her plans get derailed HARD when Bill and Charlie decide to stay at Hogwarts for Christmas to keep her company because she stayed during fourth year to avoid going home to parents who were going to ignore her or yell at her, and who hadn’t had it in them to celebrate Christmas for years, when at least she gets decorations at Hogwarts (she told Charlie this, so naturally Bill knows). She’s forced to bring them in to what she’s doing (“But you can’t tell anyone! You’re accomplices to a crime now!”)
She actually really appreciates it. She tears up a little. But seriously, boys, this was not the best time to do that
They can’t help her keep track of doing the spell at dawn, but they can totally run shouting at her when dusk’s approaching. She ends up keeping the leaf in her mouth on the first try
Talbott also stayed over for Christmas because he doesn’t really have anywhere else to go
Heck, I could see Seren inviting him to sit with them for Christmas breakfast and the four of them just sharing a nice, happy moment for once. Seren gives out gifts. Charlie is DELIGHTED at the dragon sculpture that she enchanted to move around (and she’s delighted that it actually worked. She jumps up and cheers when it bursts out of the box like she planned). She even gives Talbott some cookies she baked (“Consider them a thank-you for all of your help with that project.”)
Also, Seren starts singing Christmas songs at breakfast and Professor Flitwick overhears. He IMMEDIATELY starts trying to get her to come back to the Frog Choir after she joined briefly in Year 4 and then quit at the end of the year. But, oh man, professor, she quit for a reason and now she’s a Prefect, too, and there’s just no TIME…
Gobstones with Talbott in the courtyard still happens, but this time it’s over winter break and there’s no one out there to hear him confess his backstory to her, and no one around to see him transform into an eagle and fly off. It’s a huge show of trust to Seren now, and not one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen bird boy do
Seren hides the Animagus potion at the top of one of the abandoned towers that she walks near during her Prefect patrols (probably the Lookout Tower due to the open area) and uses her patrol schedule to go hide it. Do Prefects even need to patrol during winter break? I mean, probably. There’s still kids there and likely a shortage of Prefects
Choses a thundersnow storm at some point during the break to complete the ritual. It is freezing, and very dramatic. Bill and Charlie are there just in case something goes horribly wrong
Seren transforms into a raven and it’s the happiest she’s been in a long freaking time. She perches on Bill’s arm, she perches on Charlie’s shoulder. She changes back and she’s laughing and crying and just so happy that it all worked so well and it’s like, a tangible thing. It’s physical proof that she’s getting skilled enough to get Jacob back. And it’s the best Christmas present she’s ever given herself
The three of them get caught by Professor McGonagall leaving the tower, but do a bit where they pretend that Seren heard something up there during a patrol and called them over to help her investigate it just in case, but it was just the wind knocking the loose door around. Bill does an excellent performance miming the door swinging back and forth while Charlie nods enthusiastically. It’s very convincing, I assure you. McGonagall does let them go, assuming they were just getting up to some Christmas fun
At some point a particular golden eagle hanging out in the Owlery gets his day rudely interrupted by a very loud and excitable raven. He can hear Seren giggle out a “thank you” when she leaves. He’d never admit it, but he found it charming. And then immediately tried to convince himself that he did not think that about her, because it’s dangerous to get attached (but it’s already begun to be too late for that)
(Side note, but Rowan eventually finds out by accident late Year 5. She stumbles into Seren transformed in their dorm, freaks out that there’s a bird in there, and Seren has to transform back and tell her everything to calm her down. “Why didn’t you tell me earlier!?” “I DIDN’T WANT YOU TO BE AN ACCOMPLICE!”)
After everything that happens in the quest, Talbott’s started developing a friend-crush on Seren. She’s quiet and respects his space, she’s pretty damn smart (he’s particularly impressed at how much she knew about the Animagus process without him telling her), and there’s something about how dedicated she is to whatever she decides to do that interests him
Seren kind of thought that at the end of the quest, she and Talbott already were friends. And she was really happy to have a friend with the same sense of humor as her, who she could have some really interesting discussions with. But...
After worrying that he’s starting to like her too much, Talbott kinda ignores Seren for a couple of months, which makes her upset but she doesn’t know how to bring it up with him. Then Flying Solo happens around the beginning of April. It’s 80% the same, minus MC being pushy about being Talbott’s friend. Other minor changes are:
When learning Obliviate from Flitwick, Seren insists that both of them do the spell as it’s only fair, and she catches on easily since she’s started Legilimency training by then which gives her an edge with mind-based spells
Instead of telling Talbott some big secret, Seren goes on a five minute rant about how much she hates potatoes (”You’ll never forget how much I hate them when I’m done!”). Talbott tells her that he’s wanted to talk to her since their second year when she saved him from Merula but he didn’t know how. This elicits the above “Wait, that was you?” response before he Obliviates her
Seren ends up being really shaky and mumbling a bit after Talbott Obliviates her, and he’s terrified that he messed something up before she gets herself coherent enough to say that she felt this exact sensation earlier in the year (Pettigrew Obliviating MC). This relates to my headcanon that as a Legilimens, Seren’s more sensitive to mental spells like Obliviate. Flitwick recalls the incident and assures Talbott that Seren will be fine, Seren thanks Talbott for finally proving to her that she was Obliviated that night
Talbott and Seren agree to tell each other what they Obliviated. Seren tells him about the potato rant at the fountain that night when they’re waiting for Merula to show up, and Merula shows up just before Talbott can tell Seren about when she helped him in Year 2. He never does tell her, Seren forgets that he was supposed to entirely (though I think he will when they’re adults)
The thing about Year 5 Seren is that she’s... uh... constantly about to snap at any given moment, so the idea of Merula finding out about not just her illegal Animagus status, but Talbott’s (which, funny enough, is even better blackmail material because Seren prioritizes others over herself) sets her off. Bad. When it comes time to Obliviate Merula, Seren just tells Talbott to follow her lead, he already did his part getting Merula there
Seren successfully Obliviates Merula and then, less than a second after, Depulsos her into the wall. Talbott is just... stunned and confused as Seren walks up to Merula ranting about how she can’t do anything without Merula following her, makes a show of reluctantly apologizing “but you really startled the shit out of me!” and drags her up by her sleeve
The goal was to overwhelm Merula so that she wouldn’t even have time to process what was happening or that she could have been Obliviated. It works. A very disoriented Merula asks what happened and Seren pointedly pulls a notebook from her bag and slams it into Talbott’s chest “I was trying to help Talbott catch up on our Tranfigurations work when you came up behind me shouting! If you need Rakepick so bad, she’s not here. Can’t even do something as simple as this without you getting involved, can I!?”
Merula leaves after questioning what Seren even has to do with Talbott anyway, which lets both of them know that the Obliviation worked. Talbott’s kind of confused about his feelings because that whole display was both very smart, but very aggressive and a little intimidating. When he asks her about why she even helped him at all she tells him that she “wasn’t about to let Merula put you in danger, especially since it was my fault anyway.” It really clicks for him in that moment that Seren will genuinely go to any length she needs to to protect others, and that what’s been driving her though the Vaults is her loyalty to Jacob, that unstoppable sense of determination, and this overwhelming feeling of responsibility for everyone’s safety. He’d always though she was clever enough to be a Ravenclaw, but now he sees that the core of her is Hufflepuff ideals taken to the extreme. There’s a new sense of respect there. And then the “oh no I’m getting attached” fears kick in again
He tries to give Seren her notebook back, she insists he keep it. It’s actually just a copy of her notes that she made using Geminio that she was planning on giving him anyway to help with the classes he missed. Talbott still insists that they’re not friends. Seren doesn’t fight it. After all, she just almost exposed his secret. Even if she set it right, she knew that the breach of trust alone was probably going to be the end of things. Besides, she’s been pushing away everyone all year. What’s... one more? Especially if he’s going to push himself away
She wasn’t planning to pursue it anymore until talking with Penny over lunch and realizing that even if she kept Talbott’s secret from getting out, something’s still bothering him. And dammit, even if he doesn’t want to be her friend no one else seems to care that something’s up with him and no one deserves to be just left to struggle alone the same way that she was when Jacob went missing. So she talks to McGonagall, finds out about the necklace, firmly informs Talbott that she’s going to find it, no, she’s not leaving, just tell me where you were you don’t even have to come with me, but I am finding that necklace
The necklace search goes the same as it does in canon
During their talk at night after finding the necklace, Talbott asks Seren why she was so determined to find his necklace out of nowhere. She pulls her locket that she keeps under her clothes off and holds it in her hands for a few moments before responding “Because if I couldn’t bear the thought of losing mine, I can’t imagine what you must’ve felt.” She opens it up and hold it out for Talbott to take
He’s the first person at Hogwarts to see the enchanted picture inside that locket. Two kids, one as young as three years old, posing in front of an ivy-covered wall. The little girl is holding a plush baby seal in front of the bottom half of her face. Her brother tries to get her to smile and accidentally knocks the plush out of her hands. She looks like she’s about to cry before he scrambles to pick the plush up and starts tickling her face with it, saying something that can’t be heard. The little girl starts giggling and her brother hugs her before indicating the camera for her to smile at
“That’s him.” It’s not a question; Talbott can tell by their resemblance exactly who the boy in the photo is. Seren moves to stand next to him to look at the photo, too. “Yeah. That’s the boy who started it all. Jacob.”
After four years, Talbott finally gets what the deal with Seren Dwyn is. They talk a bit, he becomes one of the few people to learn that her father’s a Squib, her mother’s a Muggleborn, and her grandmother’s a Pureblood supremacist that hates all of them. She figures it’s only fair to share since he told her all about his parents. Seren admits that she’s jealous; she would’ve rather had parents that she believed loved her for a time, even if they were gone, than parents that she knew would never want her and that could easily come back to remind her even if she did leave. It’s a conversation that illuminates all of their similarities and differences. The mutual respect they have for how strong the other must have been to deal with the suffering, the appreciation for each others’ wit, the realization at how naturally they work together...
Talbott can’t deny that he thinks of her as his friend anymore. But to his surprise, she tells him no.
“Talbott, I’m going to strongly advise against that.”
“What? You can’t go to all this trouble and tell me we’re not friends now.”
“I just- I’m not- I can’t really stop you, but I get involved in dangerous situations every year and I don’t want you to feel you have to- to care about...”
“It’s a little late for that.”
“...I know.”
He thinks she’s cute when she’s flustered. Oh wait no oh no is this a crush???
After this it’s a little more flimsy. Not sure what exactly I want to do with them for Year 6 because I’m not entirely sure how much of Year 6 I’m going to want to rewrite. I know that I definitely want Talbott to find Seren, who still traumatized about the Portrait Vault, sitting on the ground when waiting for the Hogwarts Express. She clearly hasn’t slept and is only partially responsive. Even though she’s supposed to go in for a meeting with the other Prefects on the ride over, she ends up falling asleep in a quiet cabin that she got with Talbott. He doesn’t wake her up and hides her from any Prefects that come looking for her (which ends up just being Charlie and the other Hufflepuff Prefect in their year)
Full disclosure that I haven’t finished the Festival sidequest yet, but I’m considering keeping it sans Talbott revealing himself as Seren’s secret admirer. Not wholly sure where to slot that in, though it would probably be just after Flying Solo but before the Portrait Vault putting it... late April/early May of 1989 or so?

The Dwyn Detective Agency is open for business
Post-Vault MC and Jacob. I can’t honestly see either of these dorks being Cursebreakers, so the two of them open up a private detective agency that caters mostly to people whose cases were rejected by the Ministry for various reasons (though the most common customers are at least in part non-human or werewolves). The office is located on Diagon Alley, just near the entrance to Knockturn Alley
Non-shaded version of Jacob and Seren under the cut because I liked the lineart too much to just let it get lost in the scene

Your Jacob’s Character by @hufflepunk-asfrick and (spiritually) MC Character Challenge by @cptaincarswell (neither of whom will actually be tagged because the ship sailed on these months ago and I don’t want to clutter their notifications)
Rules: Make a collage of characters that summarize what you headcanon your MC’s brother, Jacob to be like! Tag who you want to see do this
and
Rules: Choose five characters (movie or tv show) that represent your MC/ MC’s different layers.
So uhhhhhhhhhh... here’s the thing. I was tagged in the Jacob Character Challenge by @wilhelminafujita and indirectly by @batgirl-87 a long ass time ago. I was also tagged by @batgirl-87 in the MC Character Challenge but I don’t... watch enough TV or movies to actually do that one all the way! So I’ve gone ahead and merged the two challenges into just a collage of five characters for both of them
Explanations for the choices below!
We’re going clockwise from the top of each collage
Jacob Caradoc Dwyn
Ephemer (Kingdom Hearts series)
I made a direct comparison a long time ago, but tell me if this is familiar: an overly curious boy goes missing while investigating a huge conspiracy and you spend most of the prequel mobile game he stars in hunting his ghosting ass down while he occasionally sends you vision messages
The similarities go way beyond just their roles, though. Ephemer is a big conspiracy theorist who hates not knowing things and will do whatever it takes to hunt down the truth
Most people thought he was absolutely crazy, as you do when someone tells you that they think you’re all secretly being sent into holographic simulations when you go on missions (but he was also totally right)
He’s also notoriously overconfident in combat. You meet Ephemer because he decided to take on a monster way stronger than he was and got seriously hurt. But at least he’s self-aware enough to admit it (but also... is really gung-ho about fighting things in the current arc...)
He’s a genuinely nice guy but not above needling people to get the information he wants from them
Loyal as hell to the people he cares about and protective of them. Like, he really doesn’t know your Avatar all that well but still rushes out onto a battlefield to save you and volunteers himself to go on a potentially deadly mission with you just so that you won’t have to go alone
...buuuuuuut he’s not above going off on his own without telling anyone in an attempt to keep them “safe” and then getting into serious trouble for it
Is currently having a panic attack because he was placed in charge of a gang of teenagers and has to be The Responsible One™ but clearly hates it, which is what I imagine Jacob would do if you ever made him a leader in any capacity
Messy hair and an adorable smile
Honestly it’d be easier to list the things that Jacob and Ephemer don’t have in common. I didn’t intentionally base Jacob off of him but I won’t deny that a lot of Ephemer probably influenced Jacob’s character
Sokka (Avatar the Last Airbender)
Sokka’s on here mostly due to his relationship with his little sister, Katara. Jacob’s relationship with Seren is a very strong mirror to the Southern Water Tribe siblings
He’s really smart, but because he’s also very goofy a lot of people tend to overlook just how much creativity and ingenuity he brings to the table
No, Sokka’s seriously one of the smartest members of the cast. There’s a reason they call him “the ideas guy.” He knows when to get serious and break out the logic and reason. It’s never stopped him from being a loud, boisterous goofball, though
Cursed by the universe to a lifetime of misfortune
Sokka is very loyal and protective to his younger sister, but because she’s generally more emotionally measured it comes across like she’s taking care of him. And he knows that and really loves her for it, but it just makes him want to take care of her more, since that should be his job
They bicker a lot, but in the end they’re completely inseparable
Ellie (Up)
A bit of an unorthodox choice, but Ellie really is the physical embodiment of Jacob’s excitement to travel and Hufflepuff hard-working nature in a lot of ways
Ellie has huge dreams of exploring distant lands and she goes at it with such gusto that it’s completely infectious
Some people would argue that it’s overwhelming, but Ellie doesn’t really care about their opinion. She’s doing it for her own satisfaction!
When she falls in love with Carl, her goal changes to having both of them go on the trip together in much the same way that Jacob would really prefer traveling with his precious little sister, Seren, than by himself because they’re a team
She saves up her whole life for this trip. She never once gives up on it entirely. Despite the setbacks, despite the fact that she passed away before ever even accomplishing her goal, she was always working towards that great adventure
Sherlock Holmes (Ace Attorney Series - The Great Ace Attorney/Dai Gyakuten Saiban)
I am... so glad that I didn’t make this until after the fan translation for DGS came out because hoooooooo boy does Ace Attorney Sherlock give me mad Jacob Dwyn vibes
(I was always going to make Jacob a huge Sherlock Holmes fan so this worked out way too perfectly)
Ace Attorney Sherlock is legitimately very perceptive and good at picking up on minute details, but because he’s so overzealous about his detective work he has a tendency to jump to conclusions a little too fast and usually ends up having to be redirected by his more calm partner
Once you get him on the right track, though, he’s an unstoppable crime-solving machine (with the bonus ability of being really damn good at sleight-of-hand stuff)
He’s also hugely eccentric. Would Jacob Dwyn just hang from the wall by a hook while wearing an expensive tiara for the hell of it during an investigation? Ooooooh yes
Jacob’s a lot less wildly inaccurate, though, because he does genuinely want to solve the crimes to the best of his ability
I am absolutely certain that Jacob wouldn’t hesitate to tell everyone he knows about all of the mysteries he’s solved with his sister because guys. Guys it was so cool. Yes, I am THE Jacob Dwyn of the Dwyn Detective Agency please pay attention to my cool job
Sherlock is a Good Dad and Jacob is a Good Brother. Case Closed.
Ant-Man/Scott Lang (Marvel Cinematic Universe - Ant Man)
By this point you should be seeing a pattern. Smart, creative guy who’s also pretty goofy who has a younger female character that he loves greatly
Scott, though, isn’t above doing a lot of really sneaky stuff and taking unscrupulous jobs to get to his (admittedly pretty noble) goals. He adds that slight bit of moral edge we were missing from the Jacob equation. Not much, but some
Like I just think of the scene where Scott uses a bunch of creative methods to break into Pym’s house. Methods that require a lot of knowledge of security systems and science
He also does not let the rules stop him from doing what he thinks is right. It’s how he ended up in prison in the first place
Jacob Dwyn would unironically get very excited about a “Time Heist” and you can’t convince me otherwise
Also, the snark and quips. Can’t forget that Jacob’s an incorrigible sarcastic doofus
What can I say? Scott’s undying loyalty to his daughter matches Jacob’s undying loyalty for his sister perfectly
(We are all very lucky that Jacob wants to solve crimes because he would be way too good at doing crimes)
Seren Aisling Dwyn
Saoirse (Song of the Sea)
It wouldn’t have been right to make this list without including one of the characters that inspired Jacob and Seren in the first place and Seren fit Saoirse better than Jacob fit her brother, Ben
Song of the Sea is an Irish film about the two kids of a Selkie mother and a human father, who hides their heritage from them when their mother disappears (note: Jacob and Seren’s mom does not disappear). This hidden heritage causes Saoirse a lot of physical problems (i.e. rendering her mute, making her physically grow weaker the longer she’s apart from her seal’s coat), just like Seren’s hidden Siren heritage causes her to completely fail to address her additional needs that leads to a lot of unintentional illness in her Hogwarts years
Ben and Saoirse have to try and get back home so that Saoirse can sing the Song of the Sea and sent the Fair Folk home. That’s where I got the idea for Jacob and Seren to go wandering off alone as kids and encountering a bunch of magical creatures during their adventures from
Ben totally hated Saoirse until later in the movie, which inspired Jacob hating Seren after she’s born but warming up to her in a few months
Personality-wise, Saoirse may look sweet and quiet, but she’s a huge ball of sass. It’s just easy to miss because she only conveys it in her facial expressions, which is something that Seren’s always done, too
She also doesn’t follow their grandmother’s rules well. She’ll go along with things to a point, but the second she doesn’t agree she’ll strike off on her own and get it done by herself despite how tiny she is
(A lot of younger!Seren was inspired by Saoirse)
When given the opportunity to leave with the Faeries and her mother, she chooses to stay behind with her brother and father because she loves them, and while Seren isn’t fond of either of her parents, she would stay behind for Jacob
Yew Geneolgia (Bravely Second)
Okay... look, I promise that I didn’t just base Seren off of Yew because I made her before finishing Bravely Second but...
Playing Bravely Second was an experience after making Seren
So my boy Yew Geneolgia is the youngest member of a noble and prestigious house, was never expecting to inherit it because he had an older (half-)brother so he went to magic school and ended up being, like, the smartest student there, to the point where they had to give him a secret special ranking on the school ranking system because he was tooooo smart at magic (*cough* Seren singlehandedly winning the House Cup every year *cough*)
Of course their father doesn’t want to let Yew’s brother inherit anything because he’s not a pureblood noble (and the Dwyn siblings aren’t pureblood wizards). Yew’s brother disappears hunting down a sword in order to earn his way back into the family
Yew goes hunting the sword down to try and bring his brother home and surprise surprise it’s CURSED
(The Geneolgia siblings are not a perfect match to the Dwyn siblings but there are a LOT of similar elements there)
After his brother goes missing again after finding Yew with the cursed sword, Yew decides that he’s just going to try and be his older brother by taking up his place as a swordsman despite sucking at it. In Year 4, Seren decides that everyone just wants Jacob and not her, so she starts modeling herself after him more until she can’t keep it up anymore in late Year 5
So a small, young magic nerd who’s extremely awkward in social situations whose story revolves around a missing older brother that they attempt to emulate, unsuccessfully
Also, Yew is the one making all of the Bestiary entries. He’s clearly got an interest in Zoological stuff and he’s a very good artist since he does all of the illustrations in there, too
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (How to Train Your Dragon Series)
Hey speaking of Zoology did you know that Seren was into Magizoology and is very good at befriending creatures? It’s true!
Seren in her early years at Hogwarts is very similar to Hiccup from the first film. She’s shy, but undeniably witty and sarcastic. Her self-confidence is extremely low because she keeps getting compared to more successful family members. Her strengths come from her intelligence and being able to look at things from angles others might not, like extending empathy to creatures that most would hate
She’d never be able to hurt a dragon like Toothless come on. He’s too cute. Too sweet
As she gets older she still matches up with Hiccup, though. He finds himself being thrust into a leadership position and having to adjust, but doing so gracefully and with emotional maturity in much the same way that Seren steps up to lead the Cursed Vault crew when she needs to
You have to be pretty fearless to step up to a dragon that could bite your head off and then learn to fly on it, and when it comes down to it Seren is just as fearless in anything that is not a social interaction
I’m sorry, did I just hear SELF-SACRIFICIAL TENDENCIES? Why yes, yes I do believe that I did
And Hiccup will never, ever give up on Toothless no matter what. No matter what the dragon does (or is forced to do in the second film). Just like Seren will never give up on Jacob. No matter the cost
Ema Skye (Ace Attorney Series - Apollo Justice)
I know that Ema was in Spirit of Justice, too, but I don’t know anything about that one so I’m only covering her appearances chronologically up to Apollo Justice
I didn’t realize until watching someone’s blind playthrough of Apollo Justice recently just how much Seren was like Ema
So Ema starts off strong already as A Very Devoted Little Sister who absolutely refuses to believe that her older sister is guilty of a crime despite her sister confessing to it
(She ended up being right and her sister was blackmailed into covering it up which was honestly my default situation for the Dwyn siblings before the Portrait Vault chapter came out. Ema’s sister was being blackmailed with evidence that could implicate Ema with murder, Jacob would have been blackmailed with Seren’s safety. Which is still true, I suppose, but we’ll see how this holds up later)
She’s very passionate about forensic science in the same way that I imagine Seren can be in her own interests like Magizoology and later on the development of forensic magic
Almost a decade later, though, and Ema is... super jaded and grouchy. She’s sarcastic and kinda rude, but lights up again if you get her talking about her interests
She also doesn’t have her dream job but is instead... a detective. though Seren’s a lot more content as a detective than Ema is because she’s got Jacob and a license to do creature-related cases
But just the progression from the innocent kid to the jaded adult detective is... such a good match that I just had to put Ema in here
Katara (Avatar the Last Airbender)
And just like Jacob had Sokka, Seren gets Katara to round it off
There might be something to be said about the Southern Water Tribe siblings and the Dwyn Siblings both being linked to water as an element
I already covered a lot of this in Jacob’s section, but they have a similar dynamic
Katara is a Mom Friend extraordinaire who obsessively takes care of everyone in the group, even when it’s not her place to. A lot of them find it overbearing sometimes
While she’s generally fairly mature and level-headed, when she gets mad she gets absolutely furious and cannot be stopped until she’s satisfied
“You can’t knock me down!” is such an iconic line and very much embodies Seren’s stubbornness and determination to get back up and keep trying no matter what
She loves her brother. She’s not above criticizing him or the occasional jab, but she also knows when to give him credit for the incredibly smart things that he does. Nobody will defend him quite as hard as she will when she has to
The lovable, goofy, intelligent, protective older brother and the equally intelligent, mature, caring, stubborn younger sister. There’s no better way to describe the Dwyn Siblings than that

Form of Riddikulus: Jacob/any one of her friends telling really bad jokes until they start laughing at themselves. Because Seren finds their reaction to their own jokes funnier than the actual jokes.
Form of Patronus: Common Seal
What do they see in the Mirror of Erised?: Herself with her hairstyle from before she cut it. Jacob is leaning on her shoulder and wearing a Quidditch uniform while a beater bat lays at his feet. He’s playfully batting at Charlie, also in Quidditch gear. The rest of their friends are surrounding them and it’s fairly obvious that there was a Hufflepuff vs. Gryffindor match that Hufflepuff just won. She doesn’t see a world where Jacob is back. She sees a world where Jacob never left in the first place. (In the future it changes to everyone in their adult appearances, laughing in the Dwyn Detective offices. Seren looks confident and happy, because all she really wants is to be sure that the people she thinks love her actually do)

Favourite Spell(s): Aguamenti, Depulso, Metelojinx/Meteolojinx, Stella Cascadia ;)
Trivia
Her father made her and Jacob take step dancing lessons as a kid, and she can still do several of the steps even if there isn’t a single instance in which she’d use them (besides a duel)
She’s actually a very skilled watercolor painter. She and Badeea have been teaching each other in the use of the other’s medium, though watercolor is still Seren’s preference
Seren has no idea how wizard money works and at this point is too afraid to ask
She does the Alex Russo wand-in-boot thing all the freaking time, to the point where it’s her preferred place to store her wand and it makes her very uncomfortable when she’s not wearing high boots because she has no idea where to put her wand anymore
She’s garbage at Gobstones. None of this “distract your friends” nonsense, she hasn’t won a single game once in her life. Not even against Barnaby, who doesn’t know the rules. The first time she played against Charlie, she managed to skip the ball over every other ball in the ring without hitting any of them and then screamed into her hands for a full minute
She’s actually very interested in Alchemy and will absolutely take the class if they ever offer it during her time at Hogwarts
She’ll eat anything once. She’s constantly being dared to eat Flobberworm sandwiches in the Great Hall. She also habitually challenges people to blind-bag Every Flavor Bean challenges where each player has to guess what bean they grabbed without ever seeing the bean
My personal headcanon for the Quidditch sidequest is that during Year 2, Penny pressured her in going for a tryout. She did the training right up until the Vault of Ice happened just before tryouts for the next year and decided that it wasn’t worth the effort
Similar thing with the Frog Choir in that she got in during Year 4, but was only in it for half a year before dropping out due to the Vaults yet again
She has four creatures that are “employed” at her and Jacob’s detective agency:
Brishen, the Augurey and Seren’s cooler alternative to an owl. Brish is a messenger primarily, but also an excellent scout when doing stakeouts
Spud, the Crup that she got as a puppy in Year 6 who is excellent at sniffing out clues and identifying the scents of people who would have been on the scene
The Kneazle kitten that she’s gonna get at around the same time but I haven’t developed yet
Nickelboon, the Niffler from the Creature Reserve that she eventually adopted who... steals evidence from crime scenes now. And also everything in Jacob’s desk. The two don’t like each other much
@oveliagirlhaditright this isn’t really a tag or anything, but I thought it would be helpful if you ever wanted to keep Rapunzel’s info organized

This is, like, 80% a joke, but in all honesty I do legitimately think that Seren would have a really good shot at pulling a Bill Weasley and managing to pass all twelve O.W.L.s while simultaneously trying to break a Cursed Vault
Potions and History of Magic would probably be her worst subjects because if there’s one thing she just flat out sucks at, it’s remembering numbers. So recalling dates or potions ingredients? Not gonna happen easily. But the game has also given me the ability to actually take those, so getting a good grade on them isn’t going to be a problem
The rest of the O.W.L.s that we take shouldn’t really be a problem. MC in general just shouldn’t have a problem with Transfiguration, Charms, or Defense Against the Dark Arts just by virtue of constantly practicing the material from those classes during the search for the Vaults, so those should just be a matter of a quick review and we’re good. And Seren really loves magical creatures and happens to like taking care of plants quite a bit, so Care of Magical Creatures and Herbology are just a simple review for her and she’s guaranteed an O in both of those
That just leaves the five we don’t take in the game, and I have good reason to believe that she’d be capable of passing all of them
Muggle Studies is practically a guaranteed O even though I’m certain she has never taken a Muggle Studies class. The girl was pretty much raised Muggle and attended Muggle schools until she was 11. She’s good. The only hiccup I can see is that the material might be “Muggles from a wizard perspective” but again, her mom’s a Muggleborn and her dad’s a Squib. I think she’s got her bases covered
Ancient Runes may be tricky, but also fairly easy. I’ve had a headcanon since playing Year 1 that Jacob liked writing coded messages using runes. A lot. Of course he would. He was a bit of a mama’s boy and his mom’s Faroese. Her native language is derived from Ancient Norse where those freaking runes came from and Jacob’s a nerd who probably studied them to try and get in touch with his mother’s heritage. Seren would have grown up learning to recognize and read those runes just to decode the notes he’d leave everywhere
Divination is mostly a theoretical practice, which Seren “Studies Magical Theory on the Regular” Dwyn would probably excel at. At worst I’ve had the idea that Seren skirts through Divination class on the “Inconvenience Principle.” Essentially, every time she has to make a prediction, she just says whatever the most inconvenient things that could possibly happen to her that week would be. Trelawney loves it because it fits her “doom and gloom” predictions stuff and since Seren’s a trouble magnet she ends up being right 90% of the time. In any case, the wiki notes that since MC clearly takes Divination in their sixth year that they most likely had to pass that O.W.L. offscreen to even continue on to sixth year level Divination classes, so this one might actually be canon
Astronomy, too, is a confirmed Year 6 class, so it’s highly probably that MC at least got an A on that O.W.L. offscreen. That one’s not that hard, it’s just a matter of memorizing star and moon names and pictures. Again, a thing that Seren is Very Good At. Not much to say about that one, really. If it can be assumed that MC has been taking the classes and we just haven’t been playing them, then I think my girl’s set
That just leaves Arithmancy, which as far as I understand it is basically just Divination but with math? And I have made the occasional “Seren is bad at math” joke but she’s... not, really? She can be slow at it, but as long as she’s got some scrap paper she’s notably very accurate. She just can’t do math on the fly. Which isn’t great, because from what the Wiki says a passing Arithmancy O.W.L. is mandatory for aspiring Curse-Breakers, most likely for probability calculations, so if you can’t do that fast you’re not gonna make the best Curse-Breaker. Not that Seren cares, because she doesn’t want to be one. But given that it is mandatory and everyone assumes that MC wants to be a Curse-Breaker, I can only assume that they’re either taking the class or else expected to pass the O.W.L. in some way. And since it’s just a test, Seren will probably be fine. At worst she’ll have to ask Bill to tutor her or just sit in on his Arithmancy N.E.W.T. study sessions. Or steal his old notes
Now, would she really want to take all twelve O.W.L.s? Hell, no. We’ve got a portrait Vault to finally solve and a horrible plan involving jinxed boomerangs and a troll to enact. But believe me, she would if it meant proving Dumbledore wrong. Saying that she should focus on her studies is insulting her competence and all of the hard work it took to get that competent and such comments will not stand. Even if it means completely waylaying all Vault plans for two to three weeks while she studies her ass off to earn those O.W.L.s legitimately because let’s not forget: Hufflepuff. And one of Seren’s biggest flaws is getting herself into shit because someone insulted her pride and then doubling down because well damn. She’s a person of her word. She said she’d do it and now she’s obligated to. Even if it’s so much more work than it’s worth. And she’s also a perfectionist and really, the O.W.L.s are just the perfect storm of bringing out the worst in Seren Dwyn

Sorry, Andre, but if you think Seren Dwyn is going to wear a dress to the Celestial Ball, then you clearly haven’t had more than two conversations with her, ever
