I've been putting off writing this because just thinking about it pisses me off, but the last story update in HPHM made my blood boil. I just want to slap half of the characters here
Oh, I'm sure. Because you put in so much effort to keep things from getting to this point. Seven years of "oh, the professors are handling it" and now it's "oh, I was off-ground the entire fight WHOOPS"
You'd better hope that Rita Skeeter never hears that a criminal organization just stormed the bridge while you were away and a gang of students took care of it
He might be your dad, but I'm choosing to ignore both of your existences for the sake of my much better ideas regarding the Dwyn family
YOU LITTLE SHIT I WAS JUST COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW UPSET I WAS THAT THEY NEVER FOLLOWED UP ON THE FORESHADOWING THAT THAT WASN'T JACOB. Jam City is actively trying to piss me, specifically, off with this, I swear...
What? How??? Were we actively ditching class to go talk to Perry? I wasn't informed of this! It's not my fault that they got rid of classes as a mechanic and replaced them with Assignments, Snape!
Which is all besides the point that this scene literally only exists to make you feel bad for poow widdle Mewuwa. She's good now. She didn't contribute a damned thing, but she stood next to you when it counted and that's all redemption really is, right? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
And I'm supposed to find that sweet? "Awwww, she considers you family" NO SHE BROKE INTO A HOSPITAL ROOM UNDER FALSE PRETENSES. This should be very concerning because if the hospital isn't running background checks, that's a bad thing. Call the COPS
NO SHE DIDN'T. She literally was ON THEIR SIDE until the last second, and even then all she proved was that she wasn't loyal to Verucca because, again SHE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING
"Aww, look how far we've come, Merula helped you make the potion that she initially sabotaged at the start of the game because she's a Good Person™ now" fuck offfffffff
Congrats on being the only person I can tolerate in this chapter, sir. The singular braincell in this entire game is in Snape's possession
A damned shame he just used it up, though
NO! No I'm NOT. She is BANNED FOR LIFE. And if she returns as a ghost I am banning her for her un-life. Once I graduate I'm getting a RESTRAINING ORDER
I will remind you that her vow was to remain loyal to her "true family." Betraying Verucca only proves that she did not consider Verucca her family. It doesn't prove that we are
Especially since I sure as hell am not
YOU WOULD SAY THAT. You WOULD defend your precious Y6 partner-in-crime. Don't you dare speak for me, I don't agree at all
She'd think "Oh my god, you're all the stupidest people I ever met, I'm so glad that I got out of this game back when the writing was at least passable" immediately followed by "why the fuck is Merula 'lock you in a closet with a Devil's Snare, 2x Niffler engorger which could kill it, betrays you to join a criminal organization and then makes excuses' Snyde here?"
Which is precisely why you tried to turn this organization into your own personal anti-Rakepick revenge group throughout Y6, I'm sure
What a shitshow
There's no need to evilly mug at me, sir, I'm non-canon

Birthday gift for @bluerosesburnblue, about Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery (our two OCs from it meeting). Though keep in mind, that I’m only on chapter two... So a lot of this is probably wrong. Maybe best to think of it as an AU?
In the End
Rapunzel wanted to befriend this girl, Seren—who was mysteriously looking for her own brother, while Rapunzel was doing the same thing—and who seemed like the strongest person to ever exist... but she wasn't sure how. Seren just seemed so... intense. And she was so focused on finding her own sibling, that sometimes Rapunzel felt bad that there were times she herself cared more about the Vaults than Jake. But even though Seren seemed so adamant about nothing but her quest… she had many friends: Something that Rapunzel didn't have at all, save her boy friend, Ronan... So that sort of put Rapunzel off, too.
It probably wasn't very Ravenclaw of her—since with her intelligence, she should have believed she was worth something for that... if nothing else—but Rapunzel couldn't help feeling there was something wrong with her, for not having friends: That just something about her genetic makeup drove people away. But if she was such a good friend with her cat Tree—who was such a good judge of character—maybe she could manage it with Seren, as well. So getting over herself some—since wasn’t self-consciousness selfishness in its own right?—Rapunzel went and knocked on the door to the Hufflepuff Common Room:
Something that was very Muggle of her to do, she knew—and she wasn’t even sure it would work—but the blue-haired girl did so all the same.
Thankfully, it only took a few raps on the door for the Hufflepuffs to hear it and for Nymphadora Tonks to answer it with a smile on her face …
Which slightly disappeared when she saw it was Ravenclaw, their rival House that had come calling, but it quickly came back.
“Hi. What can I do for you?” Tonks asked with nothing but pep in her voice—which somehow made Rapunzel wonder if her and her friends had been doing something mischievous. If so, she wished them the best of luck with it.
“…I was wondering if I could talk to Seren Dwyn?”
Unlike Tonks’ hair—that was a gorgeous baby pink and very welcoming right now—Rapunzel thought her blue locks were probably more sad looking than anything:
In fact, her hair surely looked as though it was getting whiter and whiter with her nervousness.
But it was what it was.
At the question, Tonks’ eyebrows squeezed up in concentration—and it wasn’t hard to guess that she was thinking about the Vaults, and that maybe Seren had asked another’s help with them—but upon giving it a moment, Tonks replied: “Actually, conveniently, she’s right behind the door here. And she seems ready to meet you, so I’ll send her your way.”
Which Tonks did:
She seemed to literally push Seren out the door—though the brunette seemed none the worse for wear for it—and then she and Rapunzel were heading away.
“So, what did you want to talk about?” Seren asked rather exuberantly. Seren had been wearing her robes when she’d joined Rapunzel. But maybe in realizing how hot it was on this floor, she quickly took it off—revealing a blue outfit underneath—when she began speaking.
“…That’s, perhaps, something we should keep quiet. So, can we wait until we get to the Room of Requirement?” Rapunzel whispered into Seren’s ear.
And when Seren nodded ever so slightly at the question, Rapunzel saw it as her cue to continue leading them away.
Rapunzel wasn’t sure if Seren knew about the Room of Requirement or not—all she’d done was raise an eyebrow when it had been mentioned—so Rapunzel thought it best to take Seren there and unlock the room herself, just in case.
And just like that, they were getting close to the room that had magicked Rapunzel’s homework for her when she’d lost it one time.
“Please… give us a room where we can confide in each other secretly,” Rapunzel requested of the room, just as her feet touched where the door would be the moment it became corporeal.
A few beats passed—to which Rapunzel and Seren looked at each other meaningfully, wondering if something was wrong—but the door to the Room opened, and then Rapunzel and Seren were scampering into it.
And deciding not to make Seren wait any longer, when they were free of any eavesdropping ears—because she hadbrought her on a strange adventure—she took a deep breath, and laid her heart out on the line, digging her nails into her arm as she did so.
“This is going to sound… mad to you. And you may not even believe me… But I also have a brother named ‘Jacob’—Jake, really—who went missing. And it had to do with the Cursed Vaults for him, too… Though I don’t know if it was before or after 1984. I think something’s wrong with me… making me not remember.”
Thankfully, Rapunzel didn’t get the suspicious or disbelieving look that she had thought she would here—that she maybe deserved—but instead, Seren had put a hand under her own chin and was “hmm”ing.
It was very Ravenclaw of her, if Rapunzel said so herself.
“That’s really sad, that you don’t remember when your brother was taken. I’m sorry! I can’t even imagine how much pain I would be in, if I didn’t even know when my Jacob disappeared… It makes me think a memory charmmust be in play here. Have you thought about having someone like Madame Pomphrey take a look at you?”
Sighing, as she sat down in front of a table—that had a newspaper about how to locate missing siblings on it?!—Rapunzel ran a hand down her face, before she decided to go full-on Muggle and maybe (unfortunately) lose Seren along the way.
“I have considered it… Except that there are ways to have your memory tampered with in the Muggle world, too—I know this stuff because I’m Half-Blood—and my family fears non-witches and wizardsmight have done something to us… And ironically, if Muggles have messed with your memories… you don’t want to make it seem like you’re noticing it to them.”
Even with the Vaults, Rapunzel was concerned that this was mostly some sort of government conspiracy—had they learned of Hogwarts?—that would end with her and her family at the bottom of a sea, with cement tied to their feet… Not that they wouldn’t have been able to escape that, but still.
At that, Seren’s heart seemed to go out to Rapunzel even more, if that was possible (with something in her eyes that seemed to hint that she knew a few too power-hungry world leaders herself).
She put a reassuring hand on Rapunzel’s shoulder—that she was only too greedy to lean into—and said, “Oh, man. That’s horrible if it’s true. And you can reallybet that I’ll help you now…
“But I also feel like—if that’s the case, and you’re not letting the ‘government’ see your emotions—you’ve been keeping too much bottled up about your brother and need to cry. So why don’t you go ahead and do so now?”
In the back of her mind—while she appreciated Seren’s sentiment—she found the notion that she could just magically turn on the emotions she had turned off (for anyone but Ronan) kind of ridiculous… And yet that was exactly what happened.
Rapunzel ugly cried—sounding like a screaming flamingo here and there as she did, she was sure—as tears stained her face… but finally she got it all out, and did feel better for it.
She’d been ignoring just what she’d lost with her brother too long now, and she wouldn’t do it anymore.
“Remember that anything’s possible, Rapunzel. Especially at Hogwarts, where there are hidden rooms and staircases move. Maybe it isn’t even connected to America, where you live… If you’re missing your sibling, I wanna help. And maybe by doing so, it’ll help me find my best friend, too.”
Rapunzel, through her tears, saw Seren reach her hand out to her in a pinky swear.
And Rapunzel readily took it for what it was: a sign of companionship for them, too:
And to show that this friendship wasn’t one-sided, Rapunzel handed Seren some Wizard Card misprints, that we’re all dated with the year Jacob disappeared and the ones that Jake could’ve.
She also promised Seren that she’d enlist the genius Ronan’s help, to which Seren answered she’d do the same with her own friends.
Seren smirked at her, and Rapunzel had never felt safer.
They were going to do this.
Author’s Note: So, I sort of had to tone Rapunzel down for this--because otherwise the two girls would essentially have the same story, doing the same stuff (I also had to make crap up, like Rapunzel thinking Muggles are involved in her case, to keep that from being true). But oh well:) Liz, you sort of did that with Sanya in the Kingdom Hearts X comics you did with our characters for me, so it’s totally fine that I’m doing the same for you here.
And it is sort of fitting, that Rapunzel is just starting out exploring the Vaults in this--and Seren is the seasoned veteran with it--since you started this game before me (and are ahead of me), and got me into it:)
Also, “Ronan” in this is the boy version of Rowan. Since you have the girl version of her. And I made the name Ronan, since... once again, we’re not supposed to be the same characters with the same story here. So even though that’s clearly who my Ronan’s based on, I’m saying my Ronan and your Rowan aren't the same character;)

The Dwyn Detective Agency is open for business
Post-Vault MC and Jacob. I can’t honestly see either of these dorks being Cursebreakers, so the two of them open up a private detective agency that caters mostly to people whose cases were rejected by the Ministry for various reasons (though the most common customers are at least in part non-human or werewolves). The office is located on Diagon Alley, just near the entrance to Knockturn Alley
Non-shaded version of Jacob and Seren under the cut because I liked the lineart too much to just let it get lost in the scene

Your Jacob’s Character by @hufflepunk-asfrick and (spiritually) MC Character Challenge by @cptaincarswell (neither of whom will actually be tagged because the ship sailed on these months ago and I don’t want to clutter their notifications)
Rules: Make a collage of characters that summarize what you headcanon your MC’s brother, Jacob to be like! Tag who you want to see do this
and
Rules: Choose five characters (movie or tv show) that represent your MC/ MC’s different layers.
So uhhhhhhhhhh... here’s the thing. I was tagged in the Jacob Character Challenge by @wilhelminafujita and indirectly by @batgirl-87 a long ass time ago. I was also tagged by @batgirl-87 in the MC Character Challenge but I don’t... watch enough TV or movies to actually do that one all the way! So I’ve gone ahead and merged the two challenges into just a collage of five characters for both of them
Explanations for the choices below!
We’re going clockwise from the top of each collage
Jacob Caradoc Dwyn
Ephemer (Kingdom Hearts series)
I made a direct comparison a long time ago, but tell me if this is familiar: an overly curious boy goes missing while investigating a huge conspiracy and you spend most of the prequel mobile game he stars in hunting his ghosting ass down while he occasionally sends you vision messages
The similarities go way beyond just their roles, though. Ephemer is a big conspiracy theorist who hates not knowing things and will do whatever it takes to hunt down the truth
Most people thought he was absolutely crazy, as you do when someone tells you that they think you’re all secretly being sent into holographic simulations when you go on missions (but he was also totally right)
He’s also notoriously overconfident in combat. You meet Ephemer because he decided to take on a monster way stronger than he was and got seriously hurt. But at least he’s self-aware enough to admit it (but also... is really gung-ho about fighting things in the current arc...)
He’s a genuinely nice guy but not above needling people to get the information he wants from them
Loyal as hell to the people he cares about and protective of them. Like, he really doesn’t know your Avatar all that well but still rushes out onto a battlefield to save you and volunteers himself to go on a potentially deadly mission with you just so that you won’t have to go alone
...buuuuuuut he’s not above going off on his own without telling anyone in an attempt to keep them “safe” and then getting into serious trouble for it
Is currently having a panic attack because he was placed in charge of a gang of teenagers and has to be The Responsible One™ but clearly hates it, which is what I imagine Jacob would do if you ever made him a leader in any capacity
Messy hair and an adorable smile
Honestly it’d be easier to list the things that Jacob and Ephemer don’t have in common. I didn’t intentionally base Jacob off of him but I won’t deny that a lot of Ephemer probably influenced Jacob’s character
Sokka (Avatar the Last Airbender)
Sokka’s on here mostly due to his relationship with his little sister, Katara. Jacob’s relationship with Seren is a very strong mirror to the Southern Water Tribe siblings
He’s really smart, but because he’s also very goofy a lot of people tend to overlook just how much creativity and ingenuity he brings to the table
No, Sokka’s seriously one of the smartest members of the cast. There’s a reason they call him “the ideas guy.” He knows when to get serious and break out the logic and reason. It’s never stopped him from being a loud, boisterous goofball, though
Cursed by the universe to a lifetime of misfortune
Sokka is very loyal and protective to his younger sister, but because she’s generally more emotionally measured it comes across like she’s taking care of him. And he knows that and really loves her for it, but it just makes him want to take care of her more, since that should be his job
They bicker a lot, but in the end they’re completely inseparable
Ellie (Up)
A bit of an unorthodox choice, but Ellie really is the physical embodiment of Jacob’s excitement to travel and Hufflepuff hard-working nature in a lot of ways
Ellie has huge dreams of exploring distant lands and she goes at it with such gusto that it’s completely infectious
Some people would argue that it’s overwhelming, but Ellie doesn’t really care about their opinion. She’s doing it for her own satisfaction!
When she falls in love with Carl, her goal changes to having both of them go on the trip together in much the same way that Jacob would really prefer traveling with his precious little sister, Seren, than by himself because they’re a team
She saves up her whole life for this trip. She never once gives up on it entirely. Despite the setbacks, despite the fact that she passed away before ever even accomplishing her goal, she was always working towards that great adventure
Sherlock Holmes (Ace Attorney Series - The Great Ace Attorney/Dai Gyakuten Saiban)
I am... so glad that I didn’t make this until after the fan translation for DGS came out because hoooooooo boy does Ace Attorney Sherlock give me mad Jacob Dwyn vibes
(I was always going to make Jacob a huge Sherlock Holmes fan so this worked out way too perfectly)
Ace Attorney Sherlock is legitimately very perceptive and good at picking up on minute details, but because he’s so overzealous about his detective work he has a tendency to jump to conclusions a little too fast and usually ends up having to be redirected by his more calm partner
Once you get him on the right track, though, he’s an unstoppable crime-solving machine (with the bonus ability of being really damn good at sleight-of-hand stuff)
He’s also hugely eccentric. Would Jacob Dwyn just hang from the wall by a hook while wearing an expensive tiara for the hell of it during an investigation? Ooooooh yes
Jacob’s a lot less wildly inaccurate, though, because he does genuinely want to solve the crimes to the best of his ability
I am absolutely certain that Jacob wouldn’t hesitate to tell everyone he knows about all of the mysteries he’s solved with his sister because guys. Guys it was so cool. Yes, I am THE Jacob Dwyn of the Dwyn Detective Agency please pay attention to my cool job
Sherlock is a Good Dad and Jacob is a Good Brother. Case Closed.
Ant-Man/Scott Lang (Marvel Cinematic Universe - Ant Man)
By this point you should be seeing a pattern. Smart, creative guy who’s also pretty goofy who has a younger female character that he loves greatly
Scott, though, isn’t above doing a lot of really sneaky stuff and taking unscrupulous jobs to get to his (admittedly pretty noble) goals. He adds that slight bit of moral edge we were missing from the Jacob equation. Not much, but some
Like I just think of the scene where Scott uses a bunch of creative methods to break into Pym’s house. Methods that require a lot of knowledge of security systems and science
He also does not let the rules stop him from doing what he thinks is right. It’s how he ended up in prison in the first place
Jacob Dwyn would unironically get very excited about a “Time Heist” and you can’t convince me otherwise
Also, the snark and quips. Can’t forget that Jacob’s an incorrigible sarcastic doofus
What can I say? Scott’s undying loyalty to his daughter matches Jacob’s undying loyalty for his sister perfectly
(We are all very lucky that Jacob wants to solve crimes because he would be way too good at doing crimes)
Seren Aisling Dwyn
Saoirse (Song of the Sea)
It wouldn’t have been right to make this list without including one of the characters that inspired Jacob and Seren in the first place and Seren fit Saoirse better than Jacob fit her brother, Ben
Song of the Sea is an Irish film about the two kids of a Selkie mother and a human father, who hides their heritage from them when their mother disappears (note: Jacob and Seren’s mom does not disappear). This hidden heritage causes Saoirse a lot of physical problems (i.e. rendering her mute, making her physically grow weaker the longer she’s apart from her seal’s coat), just like Seren’s hidden Siren heritage causes her to completely fail to address her additional needs that leads to a lot of unintentional illness in her Hogwarts years
Ben and Saoirse have to try and get back home so that Saoirse can sing the Song of the Sea and sent the Fair Folk home. That’s where I got the idea for Jacob and Seren to go wandering off alone as kids and encountering a bunch of magical creatures during their adventures from
Ben totally hated Saoirse until later in the movie, which inspired Jacob hating Seren after she’s born but warming up to her in a few months
Personality-wise, Saoirse may look sweet and quiet, but she’s a huge ball of sass. It’s just easy to miss because she only conveys it in her facial expressions, which is something that Seren’s always done, too
She also doesn’t follow their grandmother’s rules well. She’ll go along with things to a point, but the second she doesn’t agree she’ll strike off on her own and get it done by herself despite how tiny she is
(A lot of younger!Seren was inspired by Saoirse)
When given the opportunity to leave with the Faeries and her mother, she chooses to stay behind with her brother and father because she loves them, and while Seren isn’t fond of either of her parents, she would stay behind for Jacob
Yew Geneolgia (Bravely Second)
Okay... look, I promise that I didn’t just base Seren off of Yew because I made her before finishing Bravely Second but...
Playing Bravely Second was an experience after making Seren
So my boy Yew Geneolgia is the youngest member of a noble and prestigious house, was never expecting to inherit it because he had an older (half-)brother so he went to magic school and ended up being, like, the smartest student there, to the point where they had to give him a secret special ranking on the school ranking system because he was tooooo smart at magic (*cough* Seren singlehandedly winning the House Cup every year *cough*)
Of course their father doesn’t want to let Yew’s brother inherit anything because he’s not a pureblood noble (and the Dwyn siblings aren’t pureblood wizards). Yew’s brother disappears hunting down a sword in order to earn his way back into the family
Yew goes hunting the sword down to try and bring his brother home and surprise surprise it’s CURSED
(The Geneolgia siblings are not a perfect match to the Dwyn siblings but there are a LOT of similar elements there)
After his brother goes missing again after finding Yew with the cursed sword, Yew decides that he’s just going to try and be his older brother by taking up his place as a swordsman despite sucking at it. In Year 4, Seren decides that everyone just wants Jacob and not her, so she starts modeling herself after him more until she can’t keep it up anymore in late Year 5
So a small, young magic nerd who’s extremely awkward in social situations whose story revolves around a missing older brother that they attempt to emulate, unsuccessfully
Also, Yew is the one making all of the Bestiary entries. He’s clearly got an interest in Zoological stuff and he’s a very good artist since he does all of the illustrations in there, too
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (How to Train Your Dragon Series)
Hey speaking of Zoology did you know that Seren was into Magizoology and is very good at befriending creatures? It’s true!
Seren in her early years at Hogwarts is very similar to Hiccup from the first film. She’s shy, but undeniably witty and sarcastic. Her self-confidence is extremely low because she keeps getting compared to more successful family members. Her strengths come from her intelligence and being able to look at things from angles others might not, like extending empathy to creatures that most would hate
She’d never be able to hurt a dragon like Toothless come on. He’s too cute. Too sweet
As she gets older she still matches up with Hiccup, though. He finds himself being thrust into a leadership position and having to adjust, but doing so gracefully and with emotional maturity in much the same way that Seren steps up to lead the Cursed Vault crew when she needs to
You have to be pretty fearless to step up to a dragon that could bite your head off and then learn to fly on it, and when it comes down to it Seren is just as fearless in anything that is not a social interaction
I’m sorry, did I just hear SELF-SACRIFICIAL TENDENCIES? Why yes, yes I do believe that I did
And Hiccup will never, ever give up on Toothless no matter what. No matter what the dragon does (or is forced to do in the second film). Just like Seren will never give up on Jacob. No matter the cost
Ema Skye (Ace Attorney Series - Apollo Justice)
I know that Ema was in Spirit of Justice, too, but I don’t know anything about that one so I’m only covering her appearances chronologically up to Apollo Justice
I didn’t realize until watching someone’s blind playthrough of Apollo Justice recently just how much Seren was like Ema
So Ema starts off strong already as A Very Devoted Little Sister who absolutely refuses to believe that her older sister is guilty of a crime despite her sister confessing to it
(She ended up being right and her sister was blackmailed into covering it up which was honestly my default situation for the Dwyn siblings before the Portrait Vault chapter came out. Ema’s sister was being blackmailed with evidence that could implicate Ema with murder, Jacob would have been blackmailed with Seren’s safety. Which is still true, I suppose, but we’ll see how this holds up later)
She’s very passionate about forensic science in the same way that I imagine Seren can be in her own interests like Magizoology and later on the development of forensic magic
Almost a decade later, though, and Ema is... super jaded and grouchy. She’s sarcastic and kinda rude, but lights up again if you get her talking about her interests
She also doesn’t have her dream job but is instead... a detective. though Seren’s a lot more content as a detective than Ema is because she’s got Jacob and a license to do creature-related cases
But just the progression from the innocent kid to the jaded adult detective is... such a good match that I just had to put Ema in here
Katara (Avatar the Last Airbender)
And just like Jacob had Sokka, Seren gets Katara to round it off
There might be something to be said about the Southern Water Tribe siblings and the Dwyn Siblings both being linked to water as an element
I already covered a lot of this in Jacob’s section, but they have a similar dynamic
Katara is a Mom Friend extraordinaire who obsessively takes care of everyone in the group, even when it’s not her place to. A lot of them find it overbearing sometimes
While she’s generally fairly mature and level-headed, when she gets mad she gets absolutely furious and cannot be stopped until she’s satisfied
“You can’t knock me down!” is such an iconic line and very much embodies Seren’s stubbornness and determination to get back up and keep trying no matter what
She loves her brother. She’s not above criticizing him or the occasional jab, but she also knows when to give him credit for the incredibly smart things that he does. Nobody will defend him quite as hard as she will when she has to
The lovable, goofy, intelligent, protective older brother and the equally intelligent, mature, caring, stubborn younger sister. There’s no better way to describe the Dwyn Siblings than that
#harry potter series#harry potter hogwarts mystery#hogwarts mystery#hphm#hphm jacob#jacob's sibling#jacob dwyn#seren dwyn#my god i'm so sorry this took so long i really wanted to do it#but i also REALLY wanted to finish the picture of them as detectives to use IN it#and well... we can all see how well that one went

@batgirl-87 While the idea of @wilhelminafujita‘s Jacob Fujita acting as a seeing-eye Jacob is adorable, if there’s one thing I know about Fujita it’s that he’s an agent of chaos and would absolutely use Black and Dwyn’s vision problems to screw with them without hesitation
...assuming that no one would die from it

Trivia
Took step dancing lessons as a kid because his dad made him do it, but can’t for the life of him remember anything he learned in them.
Jacob is handsome and he knows it. He’s not conceited about it and rarely even comments on it, but he’s also not above giving people a smile and maybe a flirty look or a wink if he thinks it’ll help his case. Assuming he isn’t a disheveled mess because he hasn’t slept in days, that is. Even then, he might still do it to the cops
He had a collection of Sherlock Holmes books that he took to Hogwarts with him as a kid. He left them home his final year, and they were the first things that Seren took from his room and hid when she overheard their parents talking about finally clearing out his room a few years after he disappeared
He used to read mystery books to Seren when they were younger. Since he’d already read them himself before reading to her, he’d challenge her to guess the mystery before he finished and actively encouraged screaming the guesses out loud
Jacob is a terrifyingly good gambler and that’s without using Legilimency. In fact, he likes rubbing it in people’s faces that he doesn’t even need Legilimency to beat them. Do not gamble with Jacob Dwyn. He’s insufferable and you will probably lose all of your money
He’s also really good at sleight-of-hand. Really, he could very easily be a master thief but instead uses those skills to catch criminals
He’s had mild insomnia his entire life and at this point just kinda... uses the extra time for research and doesn’t really rest
The kind of person to smash through the window when making an arrest just to look cool but then fix the window once the cops have dragged the guy they arrested off
For the detective agency in the future: he should probably be able to show up in trials to testify but after about four instances of accusing the Wizengamot of corruption completely unprompted, he’s now banned from testifying

Canon Jacob’s mildly unfortunate face aside, I do really like his outfit, so here’s a Jacob Dwyn in it, recolored to fit his general style better
Bonus Alternate hairstyles under the cut!
First up, here’s the “I haven’t cut my hair in years don’t judge me” look
It’s not great, and not as long as it should be for 5+ years in a portrait, but it’s closer to what it would be than canon Jacob’s hair and a callback to one of my earliest designs for Jacob
Oh boy have we come a long way since then. Face proportions are totally different, jaw shape’s changed, and Jacob is no longer allowed to have facial hair, ever
Then there’s canon Jacob’s haircut
...I’m so uncomfortable
---------------------------------------------------------------------
By the way, when I want to get in the mood for drawing Jacob, I’ll end up playing The Gloaming’s version of “Casadh an tSúgáin” because it’s very close to what I imagine Jacob’s singing voice to be, so if anyone ever wanted a headcanon for Jacob Dwyn’s voice, there you go. Maybe just imagine it a little higher pitched and you’ve got him

MC & Jacob Pic Challenge
Rules: Pick 5 memes/reaction pics/pictures that remind you of your MC and Jacob! You can add situations or why you choose them.
Tagged by: @wilhelminafujita and @batgirl-87! Thanks, guys!
We all know I don’t have anyone else to tag so let’s just move on to a very loose interpretation of the rules here
You know, honestly, I could just post the entirety of The Mincing Mockingbird Guide to Troubled Birds here for both of these idiots, but I’m gonna limit myself to just one or two
Seren
Seren’s life in a nutshell at this point:
Literally every time something goes wrong with the Vaults:
Seren’s reaction to her feelings for Charlie while searching for Jacob:
Seren’s stubborn ass every time her plans backfire:
Seren when Merula walks into the room:
Vs. Seren when Rakepick walks into the room:
And Seren whenever Dumbledore tells her to focus on her studies instead of the Vaults:
Bonus Seren and that Augurey I know she’s gonna get one way or another:
Jacob
Jacob trying to brush off his involvement with the Vaults in school:
This dumbass every time he wins an argument:
Your friendly reminder that my Jacob is farsighted as hell and can’t read shit:
He’s also a chaotic nutcase sometimes:
He’s still a sweet guy in general, though:
And an overdramatic loser:
Jacob once he realizes he’s physically incapable of growing facial hair:
And Jacob every time he gets a terrible idea:
Bonus Siblings Round:
Seren’s reaction to searching for the Vaults:
Vs. Jacob’s reaction:
Jacob every time Seren walks into the room:
Jacob and Seren in the future if anyone asks them about the Vaults:
A pair of dumbasses communicating through Legilimency when they’re literally sitting across the room from each other:
The pair leaving every crime scene investigation when they become detectives:
And no matter what, they’re best friends forever:
EDIT: Forgot one! Jacob and Seren during every crime scene investigation
I could see them running a Buzzfeed Unsolved-esque show where Jacob hosts a Wizarding True Crime segment and Seren does magical cryptids
#harry potter series#harry potter hogwarts mystery#hogwarts mystery#hphm#hphm jacob#jacob's sibling#jacob dwyn#seren dwyn#the dwyn family#haha right five definitely#definitely did five and not 23#24 actually i forgot one i saved in the wrong folder#and just so you two know i DID see the other challenges i've been tagged in! the character collage and playlist ones#i'm gonna do them don't worry#there's just a picture i've been meaning to draw for a while that i thought would look really good in both of them#but my hands haven't been in great shape until recently#i'll get them done once i finish it don't worry#i haven't forgotten!

Tagged by: @wilhelminafujita and @batgirl-87! Thanks, both of you!
Tagging: I was tagged by both of the people I would’ve tagged for HPHM, so I challenge anyone to do this, for any OC (or fan character in any fandom) they have if they want to! You might be surprised by how well it turns out. I sure was!
Original Template: (x)
I guess as a bit of a prelude I’m going to mention that I wanted to incorporate Jacob and Seren’s Siren heritage and their Animagus forms in equal measures, but I didn’t want them to just... have the same stuff in different colors, so I divided them up so that both get decent references to them.
Seren Aisling Dwyn
Hair: A darker brown than her dad’s, but lighter than her mom’s. Wavy when long, which translates to spikes that flare out and do whatever they want when short
Complexion: Pale as hell. “How are you not a vampire?” pale. No freckles, just Pale™
Wardrobe: I can only really describe her normal style as casual, comfortable, and shades of pop punk. Tends towards short-sleeved shirts with jackets on top. Has a mild thing for vests. If it’s simple to put on and comfortable, she’s wearing it. Doesn’t really try to coordinate nice outfits, but since all of her clothes tend towards “blues” and “neutrals,” they generally turn out fine. Her work clothes as an adult are more “goth and feathers” than anything
Element: Water. Besides the fact that she’s part-Siren, water is an element known for great change and adaptability. It can be a calm pool, unbreakable ice, or a storm and waves more dangerous than anything. I thought it fit her pretty well. Seren is usually pretty composed and accommodating, but is capable of becoming stubborn as ice or dangerously wild as a storm when pushed to it. There’s also water’s healing connotations, befitting someone who constantly goes out of her way to help others
Season: Winter. It’s a very quiet season. Understated, but like water it can be completely unforgiving if you find yourself on the wrong side of it. It’s a season of rest and sleep, which is the thing Seren probably looks forward to most about finding Jacob. And, most importantly, it always follows right behind Autumn, and finishes up the transitional work it started
Animal: Raven. It’s her Animagus form. A bird that’s far too clever for its own good. A scavenger that can take whatever it’s given and use it to survive. In some cultures it’s a trickster that doesn’t care for conventions. In most cultures it’s associated with death and ill-omens, befitting a girl who’s believed by many to be cursed, with danger following her every step. In Celtic mythology, ravens are a symbol of warfare and fate in battle, and Seren is very dangerous in combat. Ravens also tend to travel in pairs, so no one would bat an eye when she travels with Jacob (assuming they find each other)
Accessory: It’d be a mistake to not include Seren’s iconic scallop shell locket, inside of which is an enchanted photo of herself and Jacob from their childhood. She always wears it to keep him close to her heart. The scallop shell is because they grew up right next to the sea (and from a meta perspective, it’s a hint to their Siren heritage)
Texture: Feathers. She’s a bird. And also really likes birds (especially Augureys). They’re also soft to the touch, but much stronger than they appear. While most feathers can repel water, if the oil on them runs out they can get clogged up with it. Seren tries to just let problems go, but they always end up wearing her down and sticking to her
Home: I didn’t go with a specific home or anything, more just her kind of decorating style. She really likes having plants around and the fresher air they bring. She has a lot of things that she won’t get rid of, but it’s all organized and arranged with purpose. A big fan of having light-up objects in her room. Her sheets are chosen due to their Softness Quotient™ and I promise you that there’s a ridiculously thick pillow top on that mattress. Her interior decorating sense is where her Hufflepuff nature really shines through
Jacob Caradoc Dwyn
Hair: Got his mom’s dark brown, almost black, hair color, but the patented Dwyn unruly curls. He tends to keep it shorter in the back, but not short enough to be an undercut, and longer in the front
Complexion: Pale™. “Hello, Jacob, have you heard of this wonderful new invention? It’s called the sun”
Wardrobe: I was very tempted to go with his mid-Vault Hunting “couldn’t even be bothered to put his pants on the correct way” attire, but decided to just go with his general fashion sense. Like Seren, his casual wear mostly consists of things he finds comfortable, though he does put more effort into looking cool than she does. Hence, a leather jacket. Probably elaborate leather boots that take an eternity to put on. Would totally wear tighter shirts to show off his physique. The “goth and feathers” work clothes were 80% his idea
Element: Wind. A reference to his Animagus form being a bird, but also very suited to his personality. It does what it wants, when it wants. It can be fickle, much like how Jacob’s mind is always wandering around from place to place. Generally unassuming, but it’s easy to get swept up in its whirlwind of chaos when it really gets going. In some cultures it’s used as a symbol of discovery and uncovering the truth, much like the great detective he wants to be would do. And, like Jacob, wind can be there one moment and gone without a sound the next
Season: Autumn. It’s a season of constant, deliberate steps taken in preparation for one, ultimate goal, much like Jacob’s single-minded pursuit of his ambitions. It could be said that Autumn sets a lot of things up that it will never finish, since all of its preparations only get their payoff in Winter. Though, you could argue that whatever it does, it does so that Winter can do what it needs to do properly. And I couldn’t pass over the death connotations of the season since Jacob is, well... Jacob
Animal: Raven. It’s his Animagus form, just like his sister. And for the same reasons, too. He’s far too clever for his own good, and ridiculously resourceful. He’s much more of a trickster than Seren, and every bit as much of a bad omen to others, but he isn’t nearly as creative in a fight as she is. Trouble has always followed him around, and death has come to at least one person he was close to
Accessory: His partner to Seren’s locket is a pocket watch with a frame inside that has the same picture in it as her locket does. The watch is to keep him on task in class, where he could easily get distracted by the actual research that he’d prefer to be pursuing (but from a meta perspective it’s a symbol of his impatience). It only works because he’s constantly opening it to look at the picture inside. He’ll keep it in his breast pocket if he has one, to keep Seren close to his heart. If he doesn’t have it in his breast pocket, it’s in his jacket pocket
Texture: Fish scales, in reference to the fact that he’s part-Siren. They’re also just as tough as the feathers I picked for Seren, but scales can be smooth or rough depending on which way you touch them, just like Jacob will return the kindness or aggression of others depending on how they treat him. Water runs right off of them. Jacob is far better at shrugging his problems off than Seren is
Home: Like Seren, I went with something that symbolizes his decorating style more than any specific home he’s lived in. He likes low lighting, and everything is a mess literally always. I can guarantee you that there’s no such thing as an empty space in Jacob’s room. He’ll find something to put in there. Generally it’s a photo, one of the books he’s reading for research at the time, or a souvenir that he picked up from travel. It is his goal to travel the world, after all. In the same vein, his walls tend to be covered in photographs that he took. He had a pin board, but all of the space on it got used up so fast that he moved to just putting pictures on the bare walls. Now it’s basically pointless, but he’ll never take it down
I know that typically people just use a font similar to their character’s handwriting, but I wanted Jacob’s signature to really show off the fact that his handwriting is a nigh-unreadable disaster, so I made both of their signatures myself. I signed their full names above just so that people could get a feel for their handwriting style, but personally I’d say that neither of them typically sign their full name unless it’s on legal documentation. Normally both of them sign things (First Initial) Dwyn. So their actual signatures tend to be more like this:
#harry potter series#harry potter hogwarts mystery#hogwarts mystery#hphm#hphm jacob#jacob's sibling#jacob dwyn#seren dwyn#the dwyn family#not to toot my own horn here but i think both of these own#i was so picky with my images and it was so worth it#i intentionally chose those raven pictures so that they'd be sideyeing each other across this post and i'm so glad it worked#yo the guy i picked for jacob's hairstyle would be the perfect faceclaim for him if he was clean shaven not gonna lie

So for anyone who saw my big post of bios for my MC and Jacob I mentioned that the two of them were 3/16 Siren and alluded to making a post explaining the details of that
Well this is that post. Contains headcanons for both merpeople and part-merperson individuals in the HP universe
Merpeople
So to start this off I guess I should talk about some headcanons I have for how merpeople work in the HP-verse since they don’t get a heck of a lot of development in either the books or outside content
First off, let’s cover the canon stuff. We know that there are (at least) three types of merpeople: Merrows, Selkies, and Sirens. The “original” merpeople were the Sirens from Greece. Merpeople from colder regions tend to be less physically attractive and more monstrous than merpeople from warmer regions. So Merrows (from Ireland) and Selkies (Scotland) are semi-monstrous fish-people, but Sirens (Greece) are essentially beautiful humans with fish tails.
Regardless, all merpeople are said to love music and are known to be able to breathe outside of the water, at least for a short time
Both merpeople and centaurs are classified as “Beasts” despite technically having all of the requirements to be classified as “Beings.” This is noted to be a conscious decision, as neither group wanted to be associated with dark creatures such as vampires and hags, even though they are Beings for all intents and purposes
An early attempt at classifying Beasts and Beings had the definition of Being be “a species that can speak the human tongue.” Merpeople were excluded as Mermish cannot be understood above water, and the centaurs abstained in solidarity with the merpeople
There is a Chocolate Frog card that features Mirabella Plunkett, a witch from the 1840s-50s who fell in love with a merman from Loch Lomond (so he was probably a Selkie). When her family disapproved of their potential marriage, she transfigured herself into a haddock and disappeared
As far as can be confirmed, almost every species that is classified as a Being can have children with humans. Giants (half-giants Hagrid and Madame Maxime), Goblins (Professor Flitwick, who is part-Goblin), Vampires (singer Lorcan d’Eath, noted Vampire ancestry), and Veelas (Fleur and Gabrielle Delacour, ¼ Veela) are all perfectly capable of having children with humans (as are Werewolves, but only in human form so I don’t count them. Heck, I question why they’re listed as a different species when they’re just magically afflicted humans. Whatever.) The only known creatures that are classified as Beings that do not have known part-human offspring are Hags and House Elves, though it’s stated in outside sources that some of Flitwick’s students thought that he might be part-Elf, which implies that part-Elves are at least possible. Therefore, it is also likely that part-Hags are possible, especially since some have been known to enter into relationships with humans (Malodora Grymm, for instance)
So, as for headcanons I’ve drawn from this, we have a few:
The different types of merpeople aren’t so much different species as they are different races of the same type of being (I imagine the same would also apply to the different types of elves and goblins)
Mixed-race merpeople could then, presumably, exist. My headcanon is that the child will have more traits of whichever race the mother was than the father, and so would be classified as whichever race the mother was, from a taxonomical perspective
So a Siren mother and a Merrow father would produce a Siren child with some Merrow-like traits, like spine-fins and silvery-green scales. A Selkie mother and Siren father would produce a Selkie with more conventionally attractive features to humans and a more alluring voice, etc.
Eventually some traits can be bred out enough that the child of a mixed-race merperson and a pureblood merperson can be classified as the father’s race, but that takes many generations to do
A personal headcanon that I have is that male Sirens are, like, absurdly rare. We never see them depicted or talked about, so I can only assume that they’re either rare or human-shy (or both). Or nonexistent, but that wouldn’t make much sense since male Merpeople clearly exist. Why would they not for just this one race?
That being said, some female Sirens are known to sometimes travel long distances to Northern merperson colonies in search of male mates due to the constant fighting for the affection their own few males. So despite Merrows and Selkies being the dominant races of merpeople in the colder waters, there is the occasional Siren female and other mixed-race Sirens hanging around in colder climates
Female Sirens hanging around up north don’t generally do too well. They are adapted to warm water, after all, and the cold makes them a fair bit sicker, sleepier, and more sluggish than they would be otherwise (because real fish are very temperature sensitive and I don’t see why merpeople would not also be so). Their mixed-race children tend to do much better, as they almost always take their father’s cold-water adapted dispositions. It’s rare for all of this to happen, though. It’s only a handful of Sirens every generation that decide to try their luck up north, since it’s not recommended for their health
For all intents and purposes merpeople and centaurs are Beings. They qualified for the position, and their classification as Beasts was more political than scientific. They’re more Being than Beast in terms of their biology and social structures, so rules that apply to Beings should therefore also apply to both centaurs and merpeople
That, combined with the story of Mirabella Plunkett, leads me to believe that, much like most others on the Beings list, merpeople (and centaurs) have had romantic relationships with humans and could likely have offspring with them if they were so inclined
Merperson/Human hybrid offspring pretty much always favor their human ancestry, genetically. It’s a 1/1,000,000,000 chance that that kid’s gonna have anything other than legs. They’re just fishy humans
Any kind of merperson can have part-human offspring. This isn’t limited to just Sirens
Also, again, just something I made up: non-magical, part-merperson humans don’t show any merperson traits. Merperson genes are only expressed if the magic gene is also active. So part-merperson Squibs would show no signs of their fishy heritage, and some Muggles may be carriers for merperson genes in any Muggleborn children of theirs and not be aware of it until the child starts showing merperson traits
Not sure if the above point should apply to all part-nonhuman offspring of different types of Beings, but I tend towards “yes”
Also, I just like the idea of there being a… not alliance, per se, but a sort of camaraderie between centaurs and merpeople. At the very least, a sort of respect between the two. No fighting (it’s not like they’ll ever really be in competition for territory, anyway)
Traits
Now, as for specific traits that Human/Merperson hybrids can have, I’ve split them into bodily traits and non-bodily ones. I think most physical traits get less prominent the less merperson someone is, and some probably just don’t show up at all unless you hit a certain percentage threshold. Like part-Veela, most traits are probably pretty difficult to detect
And, since I’m making this post in relation to my HPHM MC, Seren, and my version of Jacob, I’m gonna mark any that apply to them with an *
Bodily Traits
Let’s start with the obvious: it’s INCREDIBLY likely for half-merpeople to have webbed hands/feet and fin-like appendages. But only half-merpeople. Once you get below 50% merperson blood, fins don’t show up at all and webbing can be thin to nonexistent
Also common: large, flat feet. Larger than average. No arches. Almost like flippers, but not that big*
Large hands with long fingers aren’t as common, but they do happen
Many half-merpeople also have skin and/or hair tinted greenish/bluish/silvery, though that also tends to not show up in anybody with less than 50% merperson blood, and it’s never a very strong tint. Just enough to draw suspicion (also mostly localized to those of Cold Water merperson descent)
Skin doesn’t prune up in the water, or if it does it takes an absurd amount of time in the water for it to happen. Like, days long*
Lack of body hair. They just don’t naturally grow thick hair on their body. It’s not good for swimming. Most have a smooth-shaven look to them at all times, and it’s most prominent among male Sirens and any male hybrids of Siren descent *(again, mostly Jacob. Boy can’t grow a beard or chest hair. Or leg/arm hair)
Sharp teeth (Cold Water merpeople, again)
People with Cold-water merperson parents may be described as having fish-like faces. Wider, flatter, etc. People with Warm-water merperson parents may be described as more beautiful than the average person. Not to the extent of Veela, and certainly not magically attractive. They just tend to have pretty faces*
“Swimmer bodies.” Muscle distribution tends towards being good for swimming (so slender, muscular backs and legs, etc.) and they’re generally very flexible. Some are even quite tall due to the size of the average merperson *(mostly Jacob. Seren just doesn’t quite have the arms for it, though neither of them have the height)
Tend to be very temperature sensitive, though to what temperature depends on what their merperson parent was adapted to. People with warm-water based parents (Sirens, other merpeople with significant Siren heritage) freeze easily, people with cold-water parents (Merrows, Selkies, Sirens with Merrow or Selkie heritage) melt in the heat*
Increased lung capacity. The amount of time that a merperson hybrid can hold their breath underwater (or even just in general) is always much higher than the average human, though the amount of time they can hold it for lessens the less merperson blood they have (ex. 1/2 merperson = 45 min., 1/4 = 30 min., 1/8 = 20 min.)*
And, like normal humans, those can be trained to even higher capacities
I mentioned in Jacob and Seren’s bios that Jacob had an… incident involving some cod. Well, part-merpeople have bodies that require more nutrients found in seafood than most. They need to eat seafood fairly regularly (at least once every two weeks), otherwise they start getting horrible cravings for some, to the point where they’d eat raw fish, and get noticeably anxious, twitchy, and shaky due to malnutrition*
It wasn’t a problem Jacob and Seren even realized they had because they lived near the shore eating seafood often their whole lives. It wasn’t until they got to Hogwarts, where they don’t serve fish often, that either of them started having problems. Sometimes Seren’s friends see her eyeing the fish at dinner intently…
They don’t need more water than the average person to survive, but they are very acutely aware of any amount dehydration they experience. It can be the most uncomfortable sensation in the world to a part-merperson. Dry mouth is a nightmare*
Non-bodily Traits *(honestly all of these apply to Jacob and Seren so I’m marking the whole list)
Let’s get this one out of the way: fantastic singing voices. Just amazing, with little effort on their part. It’s not even magical singing, they’ve just got amazing pipes. Voices that carry like no one’s business (Siren only)
That said, assuming they’re skilled at magic, some can manage to give their singing a charming effect without the use of a spell, and even turn the effect on or off at will. Takes some practice to actually control. Most have used this ability accidentally at least once in their lives (Siren only)
Singing calms them down. It’s the best stress relief, and any part-Siren who doesn’t sing every once in a while can start to get extremely anxious and fidgety (Siren only)
Music in general also has a relaxing effect beyond that which it has on other, non-merperson individuals
Tend to have really sensitive hearing (to pick up sounds better underwater, yeah?)
Ending up with perfect pitch or a natural sense of relative pitch is also common
They have like… a spiritual connection to water. Like, when they’re completely submerged, it’s like a sense of euphoria. Like you’ve found exactly where you belong (unless you are currently drowning). They could soak in a tub for hours and not even notice how long it’s been or if the water is getting cold. The Prefect’s bath would be heaven to them
This can also manifest in agitation just before a rainstorm or a burst of energy during one. Also, a natural inclination towards water-based magic, like Aguamenti
Gillyweed does… weird things to them. It’s almost like getting drunk. They get giddy, like the sense of euphoria from being submerged underwater just got kicked up a few notches. Some get almost manic under its influence. The effects of Gillyweed also tend to last about three times longer than they do for the average person, so an hour-long dose would last for three hours
Gillywater can also make them giggly. Like, they get a very short-lived buzz from it
They’re not any more inclined to learning Mermish than the average person. Some might learn it, considering that they have merperson relatives, but they don’t have any inherent understanding of it or increased aptitude towards learning it
Tagging @anheiressofasoldier because I know she was interested in seeing this!

Extremely late to the party, but I finally finished reference drawings of my Hogwarts Mystery MC, Seren Dwyn, and her hopefully not dead bro. Sorry if the colors are weird, I had to manually adjust them when I switched computers
Assorted Information under the cut
Seren Dwyn
Full Name: Seren Aisling Dwyn
Birthday: July 29, 1973 (yeah, it’s just my birthday. I got lazy)
Blood Status: Half-blood (and 3/16 Siren)
Nationality: Half-Irish, Half-Faroese (lives around the shore of Malin Head, outside of Ballyhillin in County Donegal)
Wand: Acacia wood, Unicorn Hair core, 12″
Boggart: Has two. The Voldemort boggart, which represents her fear that Jacob wasn’t the person she thought he was, and Jacob as he was before he left telling her that she was a disappointment that shouldn’t have been born. Only Professor McGonagall saw the latter the one time it appeared, the Voldemort one showing up more often in Year 3 as that was the fear at the forefront of her mind at the time
Favorite Classes: Care of Magical Creatures (!!!), Charms, and Herbology (aka her chill out class)
She and Jacob were pretty much raised as Muggles due to the fact that their father was a Squib and disowned from his pureblood family and their mother was a Muggleborn from a Durmstrang-covered nation and so grew to resent magic as she received little education on its workings
So, like, they went to Muggle school until Hogwarts and knew of most things magic and Wizarding World, especially with their limited interactions with their father’s mother, but they were mostly removed from Wizard culture
Jacob’s nickname for her is Rinn, because it potentially means the same thing as Seren and is phonetically similar to the last part of her name
Her first bit of magic was hiccuping up floating balls of water when she was less than a year old. That was when Jacob knew she was going to be talented at magic
Her favorite candy is peppermints
Was just barely a hatstall between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. Like, six seconds over time. The hat was insistent that she go to Hufflepuff, but Jacob told her he wanted her to go to whichever house was best for her, not just his house. It took the hat a while to convince her that Hufflepuff was the right house for her
She’s loyal to a fault, but also has no personal ambition. Literally everything she does is for the sake of people she cares about. No dream job, no future plans, nothing. She also has a strong sense of justice/fairness, which comes out as both a strong desire to help others, even at the expense of herself (literally most sidequests) or knocking others down a peg when they start acting unfairly and hurting others (most interactions with Merula)
That said, she’s really creative and treats magic like a science. She experiments with it, and is extremely gifted in magical theory. Prefers to understand why a spell works as opposed to how, and once she does she casts it extremely well
Starts out at Hogwarts as extremely shy and skittish, which just gets worse the more people compare her to Jacob. Bucks up a bit during second year, starts getting more sarcastic in third year, and completely snaps after the Vault of Fear. She comes back in fourth year Much Angrier, with less of a filter, and a bit more Punk™ (but not much)
Literally snaps because she can’t stand how Dumbledore is treating the situation. Constantly reprimanding her and then unfairly awarding her? Not just gathering a team of Curse Breakers and sweeping the school over the summer when no one’s around like she suggested? Yeah, no, she lost all respect for him and may or may not get it back depending on where future story updates go
“Well damn, if everyone wants me to be Jacob 2 I may as well give them what they want” but she knows the rules so well she manages to break them in spirit without breaking the letter and weasels out of trouble most of the time because she never technically broke the rules and does so out of spite
That said, it’s still Seren, and she’s a genuinely nice person and a snarky dork, she’s just no longer taking unfair punishment lying down and lost all sense of self-preservation
Seren cares too much about other people, but hides it behind a facade of snark that occasionally comes across as a bit dismissive at times
Very stressed, acts chill, but breaks down when she knows people aren’t looking. It’s hard dedicating your childhood/teen years to finding your missing brother
Loves magical creatures. Loves them. Fire crab? Sooo cooool. Bowtruckle? Aw heck yeah little buddy you go! Murtlap? Oh, what a sweetheart. Sickleworth??? Mine now!!!
She’s loved Augureys ever since she was a kid. They’re her favorite magical creature
This love extends to normal animals but they don’t teach that at Hogwarts
Named the bowtruckle Jacob because she just wants her big bro back, dammit
She has a plush baby seal from when her family went to the aquarium when she was a toddler. Jacob used to do a voice and pretend the toy was alive to cheer her up as a kid. She still sleeps with it
Her owl, Arlo, is actually Jacob’s owl whose care she took over when he disappeared. The rest of her pets were found around Hogwarts, and she has her friends take them home over the summer because her parents would KILL her if she brought four animals home
While she’s good at Transfiguration, she kinda hates the class most of the time. Anything involving turning living creatures into inanimate objects or vice versa just skeeves her out so much and opens up WAY too many existential questions
That said, her favorite teachers are Professor McGonagall, Professor Flitwick, and Professor Kettleburn
She likes Professor Sprout well enough, but she’s her Head of House and Seren has a crippling fear of disappointing others, so she’s constantly worried that Professor Sprout secretly hates her
She doesn’t share a lot of personal information with the gang. She would if asked (usually), but since Jacob was her only friend growing up and he knew this stuff already, she never really thinks to share
She will never tell anyone her middle name because she’ll die before any of her friends find out her initials are SAD
The gang kind of considers her Team Mom/Team Big Sister because of her proclivity for taking care of everyone’s emotional states. Ironically, she’s the youngest person in the group, though no one in it is aware (because she’s never shared her birthday and at this point refuses to because she doesn’t want anyone making a fuss over it, especially since it’s not like any of them will see her over the summer to celebrate it)
Seren gets kind of protective over her friend’s siblings. Percy doesn’t like her much due to her chronic disregard for rules, but she still looks out for him. Fred and George think she’s cool but can also be a killjoy sometimes. Ron and Ginny both adore her. And if Penny’s sister Beatrice ends up in Hufflepuff and Seren’s a Prefect? “Oh boy, Penny, I’m stealing your sister she’s mine now!”
The gang has a minor freak out when they find out that Seren “Frequently an Irish Stereotype” Dwyn is actually only half-Irish and hates potatoes
Madam Rakepick makes her really uncomfortable... because she sees too much of herself in her. Rakepick kinda represents a “who you could be if you were an arrogant asshole” and Seren, being very Hufflepuff, wants to be anything but arrogant
Rakepick really does like Seren, or at the very least thinks she has potential, and has ever since Seren’s response to dueling Ismelda was to immediately disarm her and go into a leg sweep. Rakepick’s gotta respect a kid willing to fist fight if it helps their cause
Seren has no desire to be a Curse Breaker and chafes a bit every time someone tells her she should be one. Breaking curses is just a necessary part of finding Jacob. She doesn’t particularly care for it
Her courses are geared towards Curse Breaking, but it’s more because she has ZERO plans for her future beyond locating Jacob and at least it’s something she’s good at
She stole Jacob’s old sweaters at the start of year 4. It’s not like he’s using them. Team sweater vest all the way
Had she gone to Ilvermorny, her house would unquestionably be Wampus. Girl gets things done, especially once she gets over her shyness, but the fighter potential and defiance was always there as evidenced by the way she kicked Merula’s ass for harassing Ben and Rowan in their first year
5′3″ and steadily getting angrier every year
A lot of people think she just blindly worships Jacob, but she really doesn’t. She’s aware that he was a pretty flawed person, she just doesn’t care. He was good to her and she loves him and that’s all that matters
Jacob Dwyn
Full Name: Jacob Caradoc Dwyn
Birthday: December 15, 1968
Blood Status: Half-blood (and 3/16 Siren)
Nationality: Half-Irish, Half-Faroese (lives around the shore of Malin Head, outside of Ballyhillin in County Donegal)
Wand: Maple wood, Dragon Heartstring core, 10″ (broken before expulsion)
Boggart: Seren’s nearly drowned body that he can’t resuscitate*
Favorite Classes: Flying, Charms, and Transfiguration
Five years older than Seren but only four years above her in school due to where their ages are in relation to the cutoff date. Would’ve been in the same year as the prefects
Seren’s nickname for him is Jay, or Jayjay if she’s trying to be annoying/cute. Jake just never caught on for him
His first real bit of magic was accidentally charming a room full of people while singing in a school pageant when he was four. He’s been afraid of singing in front of other people since, despite having a really good voice
His first reaction to being told that he was going to be an older brother was “Oh boy new friend!!!” The first time he met Seren he let her grasp his finger and told her he was gonna be the best big brother ever
He then started hating her for a few months because she just would not. Stop. Crying. And her room was right next to his so he heard it constantly
Warmed up to her when he realized that she was just scared of loud noises and would sing her to sleep after that (and she’s the only person who he’s comfortable singing around now)
*His boggart comes from a moment when Seren was three and he was supposed to be watching her but was so caught up in his own adventure he didn’t notice her get too close to the cliff edge and she fell into the ocean. He jumped in after her but she was completely submerged and her leg was stuck in some seaweed. She definitely would’ve died if a nearby Merrow hadn’t pulled her out. And he didn’t know CPR (he was eight) so he was lucky she coughed up the water herself. The event traumatized both of them. Seren was afraid of going into the water for years and Jacob got super protective of her and developed a fear of being unable to save her, which is what his boggart represents
Firmly believed that rules should never prevent you from doing the right thing, which would really inform most of his actions at Hogwarts
Has two main goals in life: become a cool detective and go on a world tour with his family (though once he’s estranged from his parents for good it becomes go on a world tour with Seren)
Loves liquorice and liquorice wands. Was known to eat whole bags of them at once
Was a true hatstall between Hufflepuff and Slytherin, but was ultimately placed in Hufflepuff because he would throw away everything in a heartbeat to benefit someone he loved, he valued loyalty above all else, and preferred to do things on his own merit rather than cheating. He got a rush from genuinely overcoming challenges
That exhilaration when he overcomes challenges led to him really loving puzzles and mysteries of all kinds. In a way, Seren was half-right when she speculated that his reasons for looking for the Vaults was that he wanted to overcome a complex puzzle. It was why the search became addicting, but not why he started looking in the first place
He was notably impatient and had a habit of acting without thinking through consequences a lot. Honestly, Seren was a good part of his impulse control and he took a lot more risks at Hogwarts than he would have if she was there
His witty and cunning side tended to get him into trouble, too. Boy had a hell of a sarcastic streak and never could keep himself from snapping back at people who made snide remarks at him (looking at you, Snape)
Say what you will about his bad habits, but he was a very good brother to Seren. Their parents were always pretty distant so he became the emotional support that she needed. He’d let her sleep with him when she got scared during thunderstorms, would hold her whenever she got upset after being teased in school (and helped her with her homework as much as he could), and at one point climbed up onto their roof without a second thought when she got herself stuck up there by an accidental use of magic... and then he realized that he didn’t know how to get either of them down. He played games with her until their parents came home and got them down
The entire faculty was aware that he would gush about his sweet baby sister if given reason to. Most of them already knew who Seren was before she started at Hogwarts because of it (”Hey Professor Sprout, what plants would be good to mail to my sister? She loves flowers!”)
The only way I can reconcile a Hufflepuff!Jacob going on a search for the Vaults is that he thought something in them/someone looking for them was going to pose a threat to either the student body or Seren, so that’s what I’m going with until proven otherwise
Honestly there were a lot of reasons people thought that he was certifiably insane. Beyond raving about Vaults that most people didn’t believe existed he:
had a tendency to just Not Sleep when he was working on a project and was known to down bottles of Wideye Potion and then not sleep for days. He always looked tired in his later years
got really twitchy when he didn’t sleep, so he was always nervously fidgeting in his later years
was so impatient that he’d jump off of part of the Grand Stairwell to get around faster
once had a serious craving for fish (due to his Siren blood, which neither he nor Seren are aware of) and ran into the Great Hall in a panic, grabbed cod with his bare hands, and then ate it while jogging out of the room. This was one of Angelica Cole’s few interactions with him and one of the only times Bill Weasley ever really saw him in their 1 & 1/2 overlapping years (”Seren, your brother was weird.” “Yeah, I- ...yeah. That sounds like Jacob.”)
was kind of a mess just before he was expelled. His shirt was never on right, he was lucky he could even get his tie on, constantly forgot his robes, and he was using Reparo on his clothes nearly every day because they kept getting torn up with Vault related stuff
is farsighted, but refuses to get corrective glasses or fix the issue, leading to him squinting a lot when he reads and such. He just can’t freaking see
Also, it’s canon that he has godawful handwriting and can’t draw to save his life. Boy’s a living disaster sometimes
If he hadn’t gotten involved with the Vaults, he probably would’ve joined the Quidditch team as either a Beater or a Chaser, and likely would’ve also been the male prefect of his and Jane Court’s year
He and Jane absolutely hated each other, but the kind of hate that involves some belligerent romantic tension. The kind that would probably lead to an emotionally abusive relationship if they ever got involved when they were older, but mutual attraction was still there. It’s a good thing they never got to that point, but I could see Jane trying to sneak him a love potion in 6th or 7th year if he hadn’t gotten expelled
If you asked him about it, it’d take him a while to remember who Angelica Cole was. He’d need you to describe her. He was nice to her, but their interactions were limited and he was usually distracted by the time she started talking to him more
I actually have a hard time seeing him in a long-term romantic relationship with a British/Irish witch or wizard due to his reputation. I could see him with a foreign magic user, maybe an Ilvermorny alumni or something
I could very easily see his Ilvermorny house being Thunderbird had he attended school there because he’s always wanted to travel and always yearned for adventure. Not super relevant, just some interesting personality trivia
Also, he’s only an average 5′9″ at maximum height, but he’s taller than Seren and that’s enough for him
He got expelled about a week before his 15th birthday. The last time Seren saw him, he was hugging her while sobbing and just kept muttering “It’s gonna be okay. I love you. I’m so sorry,” over and over again. He was gone the next morning and Seren hasn’t been “okay” since
Both/Other
Both of them are trilingual at Hogwarts (English/Irish/Faroese) and may eventually learn Mermish in the future
Their mother taught them Faroese and their father thought it would be fun to do the same with the language of his country, even though he did not speak Irish himself
They make a lot of very similar expressions and have similar body language, which most Hogwarts professors picked up on fairly quickly (”Miss Dwyn, I know you’re lying. Jacob used to make that face when he was lying, too”)
Jacob’s patronus would be a Sea Lion* and Seren’s a Common Seal*
*I actually haven’t settled on whose is whose. Dunno if I want their patronuses to represent the caster or their sibling more
Seren is unable to cast a patronus unless Jacob is found alive. She cannot cast one before they find him and will never cast one if he is found dead or irreversibly evil/insane/corrupted
I was actually pretty against it at first, but I’ve gotten attached to the idea of both of them being Raven animagi, with Jacob being unregistered and Seren’s registration status up in the air right now
Both of them keep their eye color when they transform, which is much better for Jacob since Ravens tend to have similarly colored brown eyes
They also both have a chuckle that sounds like the clicking noise Ravens sometimes make
Being a Raven animagus makes Jacob’s tendency to transfigure things into black quills to hide them way more ironic
Assuming Jacob is found alive, in the future they end up starting a private investigation/private detective’s office where they take jobs that the Ministry has turned down. They get a bit of a reputation for not turning anyone away who needs help: human or not. Also espionage
If Jacob is found dead (and Seren does not also wind up dead) then Seren either takes odd jobs with no real purpose OR joins the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, Beast Division, depending on the circumstances of Jacob’s death and how well she’s able to cope with it
Goodfuture! Jacob and Seren both get very good at Legilimency and Occlumency, Legilimency due to its uses in their profession and Occlumency due to paranoia arising from the entire Vaults incident. They practice on each other
Jacob is slightly better at Occlumency than Seren, Seren is slightly better at Legilimency than Jacob
Reading each other’s minds as much as they have leads to them being even closer than they were before. They now know secrets the other will never speak, and they can predict each other’s thoughts fairly easily. It also helped them work through Vault-based trauma
At some point they get really good at communicating wordlessly through magic. It freaks people out
Their siren blood does effect them, but I feel like that’s grounds for its own post

You know what it’s always a good time for?
Dwyn Sibling Angst
(This one’s a big one so I’m putting the explanation under the cut)
So who remembers the Patronus sidequest?
Way, way back when I posted that first ever bio of Jacob and Seren I made brief mention of Patronuses, namely what theirs would be and the fact that Seren would not be able to cast it unless Jacob was found alive. I later made brief mention that I’d finalized the Patronuses to a Sea Lion for Jacob and a Common Seal for Seren, but I never actually elaborated on why Seren would have trouble with the spell
That’s because I started this stupid, elaborate project back when the quest came out and just never finished it, so here we go. Let’s finally talk about Seren’s Patronus issues
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have this tendency when applying sidequests to Seren to just make up my own timeline that’s completely divorced from both what year the quest claims it takes place in and what year I actually ended up playing it in. In the case of Unleash Your Patronus, I actually do put it in Year 4 like the game suggests and not Year 5 when I played it
The Patronus Charm, as far as we know, has three requirements: strong magical skill, a “worthy” heart, and the ability to muster up and sustain a happy memory
Pass, pass, hard fail
Seren is not a happy person. I wouldn’t even say she’s a positive person. If it looks like she’s being positive, it is almost always performative to try and ease someone else’s nerves. This girl is a giant ball of nerves that gets angstier and more traumatized every year and she cannot shut her emotions off. Not that she can’t be happy, she can, but it’s far from her default state since the anxiety tends to run through worst case scenarios all the time
Complicating things is that her happiest memories are all things involving Jacob, who is decidedly not there. The reason I set this in Year 4 is because we don’t even have the Forest Vault message that he’s in the next Vault yet. He could legitimately be dead for all anyone knows in Year 4. So positive memories are of Jacob which, oops, reminds her that he’s still gone. Which then triggers the worst case scenario machine that is her brain
So, alright, let’s assume that Seren manages to shove that down. She’s just focusing on the memory, maybe even repeating “I’m gonna find him and we’re gonna do that thing from our childhoods again” to keep from getting distracted. Cue the actual form of Seren’s Patronus
I picked the Common Seal and Sea Lion for the Dwyns for a variety of reasons. I was already giving them the same Animagus form, figured I’d switch it up for the Patronuses. Make them “related” and symbolizing similar things, but not the same (also reference that merperson heritage). I’ve also always been a fan of the idea that sometimes particularly strong memories can shape the Patronus thanks to the fact that sometimes people with an obsession with an animal have their Patronuses take that form, and then there’s this quote:
"[...] the Patronus often mutates to take the image of the love of one's life (because they so often become the 'happy thought' that generates a Patronus)."
And now we have the earliest memory Seren has. She’s three years old and Jacob’s eight. They go to the aquarium. It’s one of the few times they’ve ever gone out somewhere as a family and she’s just completely enamored with the whole thing. She really falls in love with how cute and graceful the seals are, to the point where she spends part of the trip after they’ve moved closer to the gift shop camped out with the seal plushies just... looking at ‘em. Jacob notices and convinces their parents to buy her one. It’s her absolute favorite toy as a kid, and one of the few things she brings to Hogwarts every year, without fail
It’s not a memory she thinks of much. It wasn’t even the memory she was using to call forth her Patronus, despite being her first happy memory. And yet, there it is, played out in front of her in a brilliant light show. This time, though, Jacob isn’t there. Fighting down the instinct to whirl around and show it to him is just another reminder that he hasn’t been found yet and may never be and what if he isn’t-
-and it’s gone.
So even if Seren manages to fight through her natural tendency to make everything worse in her head, what her Patronus looks like will just send her spiraling right back into it. And once she sees it the first time - that’s it. Now she knows what her Patronus is and dreads seeing it again so much that she can’t focus on anything else when casting it. A dread that’s strong enough that she wouldn’t be able to muster up even an incorporeal Patronus
That’s why she just can’t cast a Patronus unless Jacob’s found alive, and mentally sound, and noooooot evil
If the Vault situation isn’t resolved with a happy ending, that’s all permanent. Jacob’s evil, Jacob dies, whatever, that’s an automatic no Patronus at all. If that incident from Year 6 Chapter 18 is real and permanent but Jacob’s fine, that gives her the most inconsistent incorporeal Patronus at best and the only reason it can manifest at all is because it’s form has no ties to the spoiler character so the dread factor is gone
The best timeline will probably result in Seren being able to cast an incorporeal Patronus consistently, a corporeal Patronus fairly consistently in low-pressure scenarios, and managing to find a workaround regarding a corporeal Patronus by having Jacob just send his most terrible jokes at her via Legilimency in high-pressure situations. Even in the best case scenario, she still struggles with maintaining positivity and is riding solely on her support network
I let her become an Animagus at age 15, I had to give her some weaknesses. (Relatedly, she also struggles with Riddikulus and can only perform it consistently due to intense practice thanks to the Vault of Fear)
------------
Furthermore, Jacob and Seren’s Patronuses are what they are because:
Seals and Sea Lions tend to get shoved together when searching for symbolism. A Patronus represents the “hidden inner self” that is called forth in times of need. So then I have to come up with something that can represent both Jacob and Seren, but being just different enough to represent the nuances between their personalities.
Common traits associated with them are playfulness (more overt with Jacob, but Seren is still mischievous and can be goofy), creativity/big imagination (extremely applicable to both of them), adaptability (which goes hand-in-hand with their creative aspects), faith (normally self-faith. Seren lacks it so perhaps this symbolizes what she needs to develop. Both have faith in others), independence, and balance (with the two finding balance with each other, losing it, then regaining it later in life)
To separate them I looked at behavior. Seren gets the Common Seal due to their quiet nature and tendency to remain largely solitary. The introverted one
Jacob gets the Sea Lion because they’re LOUD and DON’T EVER STOP BEING LOUD and prefer being in larger groups. The (somewhat more) extroverted one
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, here’s the still .png for the key frame in the .gif with the Patronus in it because I liked it a lot
And there it is. The big Patronus explanation writeup. I’m so glad it’s done
I started this damn thing after I finished the Patronus quest. Like, the day after or even the day of. And then I stopped for some reason! And then a few months ago I was like “hey, that was almost done and Dementors are coming back into the story, why not finish it?” Didn’t get it done in time for that update. And then that update was Year 6 Chapter 18 and I lost all motivation I had
So here! Fine! Happy one year and one day anniversary of when the Patronus sidequest came out!
Now please take this thing out of my sight
