What's your opinion on nwjns leaving ad*r? Apart from being happy for hyb*'s downfall (same), do you think they'll be able to maintain the same level of success or not?

in my opinion, i think they have established a pretty big and solid fanbase to be able to still be successful after this. i have never seen a group be able to capture the attention of international and korean gp that early on in their career and i think having the gp on your side is pretty huge because that means you have kinda transcended the bounds of your fanbase a bit and you are definitely well loved.

it won't be easy in the beginning for sure! if they join a new company and maybe decide to be independent (which is something i believe they are able to do it with the right support) i think they will be able to make it. i am also sure that after this whole situation, they will gain new fans because people will support them to see where they go next and that to me is also why i believe the support won't waver that much and a lot of people will be waiting for their comeback. truly only time will tell but i think it's looking pretty good for them in terms of support

I remember you talking about how you and your friends consistently reported a lot (hundreds???? of antis and their misinformation a few years ago and now this. The post talks about this room mainly targeting girl groups like Twice and a couple of comments down there was even a mention of STAND, the anti fans of SNSD who really wanted to bring them down. Reading this blew my mind because with the amount and reach of their organization feels like miles ahead than an organized group of trolls and antis that I thought most idol groups dealt with.

Does BTS have something like this? Because when I read your post on antis I was under the impression that it was a small group of head antis with a few minions to do the legwork. This slave room actually spent tons of money on this smear campaign. It comes off to me that they might have backing from a company but maybe I just can’t believe that people would waste their cash on something so petty lmao. Time maybe but not money. It sounds like a real campaign almost like QAnon or MAGA, which is scary to think about!!!! The users say that their k-fandom worked against it but weren’t successful as much until it was uncovered by the media. They didn’t even contact the gg’s agency for help. Are K-Army aggressive when it comes to squashinh down stuff like this?? Antis are scary and unhinged 😭😭😭😭😭

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the anti 'slave rooms' are well known. Antis in k-pop are a very special breed and yes sometimes there is corporate backing for that hate. I mean, the most recent example of that is Kakao's Idol Lab expose that newspapers in Korea reported in November 2022. For anyone who doesn't know, Kakao (the same Kakao that SM stans would rather have their idols be managed by, rather than HYBE), funded a group known for 'reverse viral marketing' that specialized in creating and spreading hate and malicious rumors against Aespa, Le Sserafim, NewJeans, Itzy, Garam, and a few other rival groups, while simultaneously creating and boosting positive posts for IVE, Monsta X, Wonyoung i.e. groups under their Starship music label. The company claimed that group of haters were third-party contractors and that Kakao wasn't aware of what they were doing, but given this is same Kakao that rigged a music talent show so extremely and blatantly that some of their staff went to prison, many people clearly don't buy it.

Now, here's a quick quiz. It's more of a temp/sense check to see if from all I've been writing about the k-pop industry and HYBE / BTS / ARMYs' relationship with it so far, you've learned something and can answer the following questions correctly.

Did that very damning revelation impact Kakao at all?

Did fans of SM groups who learned their favourite idols/groups were explicitly targeted by Kakao, care in any meaningful way?

Did those fans care when Kakao was revealed to want to acquire management rights of their idols/groups? And what about after Kakao was revealed to have pursued illegal means of acquiring SM shares?

Does the wider k-pop fandom view Kakao as worse or similar to HYBE?

Has this revelation impacted any of Kakao's groups in any meaningful way since then?

Do you think the reaction of k-pop stans to Kakao's manipulation would be the same if HYBE was found to have done the same?

I'm kind of curious to know what your answers are.

Anyway, by this point I hope that when I say the behaviours you see in k-pop fandoms are structurally supported, and that ARMY (for most of the fandom's existence so far) has borne the brunt of acting counter-cultural to the dominant behaviours you see here, as has BigHit and BTS going against many industry norms, and that many people in k-pop fandoms aren't here for the right reasons, I hope that by this point y'all can see I'm not talking outta my ass.

Many people here get into k-pop for the shiny veneer of perfection, of bright MVs, crisp choreos, and hot Asian celebrities who engage in the sort of fan service only rockstars of old got away with, but they stay for the fanwars, for the long-running feuds between fandoms, for the constant picking apart of idols and groups they dislike, for the hope that one day the groups/fandoms they hate will experience a reckoning... - people stay for the hate. Many of them do absorb all sorts of conspiracy theories about BTS and groups/idols they hate and yes, it can take on a Q-Anon quality.

There's a lot that's fucked up in this industry and not even HYBE is completely spotless, but what matters for a lot of the people in this space is making an example of the one group that was the anomaly, and the company and fandom that helped them rise above it all. I'm not even trying to be alarmist or sycophantic, this is literally just the reality I've observed for years.

This is one reason I suggest you simply report and block when you see hate, don't engage with the hate or give people/spaces with a taste for it any oxygen. It's why when I see people engage in 'discourse' where they simply fan up theories or unilaterally negative critiques about groups (and especially BTS), I just check out.

Now that k-pop has gotten even more international exposure courtesy of BTS, it is potentially even more lucrative than before, and so the stakes have only gotten higher. But the players are still used to relying on their unsavory playbook and see no reason to change because the wider k-pop industry and fandom is more than okay with it. I mean, just look at the Kakao-SM deal and k-pop fandom's reaction to it even after the police have just raided their offices...

The quality of music BTS makes is more than enough reason to focus only on them and that. Their personalities and group chemistry are a wonderful bonus. And their history and relationship in this industry for anyone who understands the dynamics here, is only the cherry on top. This is one reason it sometimes annoys me when ARMYs let it get to them or act just as unhinged, disgusting, and stupid as many of the folks who only 3-4 years before they couldn't stand.

I apologize in advance for how long this post is going to become but you're really opening the floodgates by letting me talk about music lol

(it's been a very dry year for my favorite metal bands or this list would've been even more chaotic lmao)

1) Dear Insanity... by DPR Ian

while I struggled to rank most of these, there was absolutely no question about my #1 album of the year. I only just discovered DPR Ian in 2023 and he very quickly became my favorite artist ever. you might have even seen me talk about this album an unhealthy amount of times already lol. he's just such an insanely good artist and every single song on this album is just soooo damn good.

part of why I love him so much is also the story he tells throughout his music videos and just how insanely good all of his MVs look and how well the visuals fit the music so I feel obligated to link the MV to my favorite song off this album:

2) The World Ep.2: Outlaw by Ateez

everything Ateez releases is immediately getting added to my favorites, what can I say. I didn't have the money to go to their 2023 tour but I did see them live in 2022... absolutely worth the one and only time I ever caught corona. not a single bad song on this album, they're all absolute bangers.

3) Take Me Back To Eden by Sleep Token

I only just discovered Sleep Token in 2023 but I absolutely fell in love with this entire album and their style in general. almost got to see them live but then I ended up getting surgery on the exact day of their concert... :')

4) OO-LI by Woodz

I am a Woodz stan first and a human second. I'm convinced this man is incapable of releasing bad music, everything he does is just so damn good and I love how he explores a bunch of different genres while still making all of his music just sound like him y'know

also honorable mention to Amnesia which is only a single album so it didn't make the list but if you like more eerie stuff and the general vibe of his music, definitely check it out, I love it so much

5) On My Youth by WayV

WayV will forever have me in a chokehold. they've been my favorite NCT unit since their debut and honestly also the only unit I managed to properly keep up with over the last year ashgasj. I just really love their style of music and how they've actually been sticking to it

6) The Name Chapter: Temptation by TXT

It's truly been a TXT kinda year for me, I've been listening to them a lot. there aren't many songs on this album but I still love it so so much, all of the songs are great and Sugar Rush Ride is such a unique title track

7) Dark Blood by Enhypen

honestly Enhypen are part of the reason why I might have to update my top 3 kpop groups to a top 5 lol. all of their albums so far have been great and this one was no different, I still listen to a lot of the songs on it on repeat

8) RUSH! (Are U Coming?) by Måneskin

well what can I say, Måneskin have had me in a chokehold ever since they won the Eurovision and I actually got to see them live in 2023! drove all the way over to Berlin for them and everything, great album with great songs. I love both their more rock-ish songs and their slower songs and this album has a great mix of both (although I wish there would've been some more Italian songs on here)

9) MONO by K.Flay

K.Flay has been one of my more underrated faves for a couple years by now and I'll take any chance to gush about her music. there's just something very unique about K.Flay's music and this album certainly didn't disappoint. honestly, the only reason why I ended up putting this one on the "last" place is that I haven't listened to it as much as the other albums on this list

this is a rather recent one so I haven't listened to it enough for it to make the list, but I love everything MCND put out and this is definitely also a great album! (plus the title track is yeehaw kpop which is incredibly creative of them and I didn't know I needed that in my life)

HAPPYPILLS by Utsu-P

and this is where I expose the true chaotic nature of my taste in music lmao. Utsu-P's music is the perfect clash of world's between teen-me's obession with vocaloid and current-me's love for metal. I didn't include this album bc I still haven't gotten around to listening to all of it, but the songs that I did listen to, I absolutely loved

I feel like he would get slightly jealous anytime you talk about your ult bias but he knows your bond is stronger than anything

He would probably tease you for reactions to your favorite groups but seeing you so happy makes his day

One time you caught him quietly humming along to one of your songs but you chose not to say anything in hopes he’ll do it more often

If you like to learn the choreography then he’ll insist that you show him the complete dance as soon as you have it down

He won’t tell you but because of the amount of times he’s seen you practice he has a couple of the moves memorized

I feel like he probably has trouble memorizing so many people if you stan multiple groups but you applaud him for trying (he does remember your ults tho!)

I feel like he likes watching your groups YouTube segments if them have some (like going seventeen or stuff like that) more than actually listening to their music

It helps him get to know the people that make you happy and that’s all he wants is for you to be happy

Overall he is a really big tease and honestly wouldn’t have you any other way cause if they make you happy then he’s happy

He’s probably more like Sam where he just doesn’t understand but after a while I feel like he starts to warm up to the idea of kpop

He finds it so cute when you suddenly start dancing to the songs sometimes he secretly records you so he can watch them later

We all know he’d be super jealous of your bias not matter who it is cause if he has to fight for your affection they’re his rival

But deep down he knows they can’t compare to the bond you guys have

I feel like he’d remember at least your ult group’s names and maybe your bias from different groups but other than that if you show his someone he’ll have no idea who it is

He’d probably like it if you stan groups with smaller amounts of members because it’ll be easier for him to remember but if your ult has a larger amount he’s willing to take the time to memorize them just for you

You best believe he’s willing to give into your addiction of buying merch and albums just to see the smile on your face

He would jump anytime you happen to scream and he hates it every time cause he thinks you’re in danger but it’s just about another one of you idols

If he ever got a song stuck in his head he’s be so passive aggressive about it and won’t admit to liking it but you secretly caught him listening to it later

Overall I’d say he’d be super jealous of all the idols you fangirl over but he’s proud that you picked him over anyone considering your standards are super high lmao

Ok but like I get the feeling that he probably memorizes all your groups and the names of every idol you like on accident??? (This happened to me with a group lmao)

Whenever you listen to a song you know the choreography to he probably mimics the dance in tiny because of how many times he’s seen you do it

He seems like the type to also memorize like the rap parts he really likes from the songs you play (PLS I can just imagine him singing the ‘cooking like a chef I’m a five star Michelin’ and mimicking the deep voice lmao)

In all honesty he probably biases the rappers without even realizing it and if you bring it up to him he would have absolutely no idea what you mean

He may have every idol you like memorized but the terminology just completely goes in one ear and out the other (he’s completely clueless about kpop lingo)

He’s probably the most open out of all of them about all this and you’re so close to him becoming a kpop stan

Probably has a few favorite songs so you make a small playlist of songs he likes or you think he’ll like

Won’t complain when you randomly start singing or dancing to some of the songs he might even join in if he knows it

I feel like he probably buys you albums to help with your photo card collections (if you do that) cause he just likes to see your reactions to your pulls

Overall super supportive and you’re determined that you’ll eventually turn him over to the dark side lmao

He is another that I feel would be jealous of all the idols you gush over

He would probably remember quite a lot of the idols you like without you asking cause he just loves you that much to remember what makes you happy

He’s willing to listen to it but probably will only listen to it if you’re the one that puts it on

Sometimes when he misses you he’ll put on the playlist of kpop songs you made him cause it reminds him of you

I feel like when you guys move in together he gets a place that has an extra room for you to put all your posters and display your collection

He probably also keeps tabs on your ult group to know when their albums are coming out to buy you them

And when they come on tour near where you guys live he likes to know so he can get tickets for you

He likes it when you sing along to the songs cause he think you look adorable and likes that you’re so comfortable around him to do that

You bought him a shirt of your ult group for a laugh but he likes to wear it for you and if any of the guys laugh at him he just rolls his eyes cause he’s more than willing to do anything for you

Overall he likes that you don’t hide this part of you and if he can contribute to making you happy with any merch he’ll gladly do it even though he’s still a little jealous of your bias

I feel like he wouldn’t complain about it and he actually kinda likes it

He probably only likes certain groups you play so you made him a playlist of songs for just those groups

Anytime you hear him playing a song you recommend you get so excited to ask about his opinion on it

When you introduce him to groups he gravitates more towards the mood makers of the groups and they usually end up being his favorite

He’s another one to like YouTube series of the groups more than the actual music cause he can really see where you get your humor and everything from

When he misses you he likes to binge them cause they remind him of you

Idk why but he strikes me as an arts and crafts type of person so I feel like he made you some photo cards of you two and ngl you probably keep them in the back of your phone case with your other pc or with your pc collection cause they’re very sentimental to you

When it comes to memorizing stuff I feel like he���s the opposite of embry like he knows the lingo and everything but you say a name he’s like “who???”

If anything he’ll only remember your ult bias and maybe the name of your ult group but that’s better than nothing (he probably has notes on who is in what group in case he wants to get you something)

Overall he likes to make you little stuff to put with your kpop collection and he supports you 100%

If he wasn’t already a kpop stan you probably turned him into one lmao

I feel like he’s more of a soft stan (into softer concepts)

He likes to learn the choreography with you and has so much fun dancing with you it becomes one of his favorite past times

One time he learned the choreography to ‘What is love’ by twice just to dance it for you (you recorded it so you can watch it anytime you miss him)

He probably is a girl group stan tbh (as he should)

I feel like he does like certain boy groups but not many

He made a playlist for you of kpop songs that remind him of you and you listening to it religiously

Y’all like to go on shopping sprees for albums and other merch and y’all like compare pulls

Omg imagine trading your photo cards with each other y’all probably have a designated day every month or so depending on if you got albums that month or not

Overall y’all are both super big stans and you guys both hype each other up a lot when your ults have comebacks and it’s super fun

Ok so like if Seth was a kpop stan (I’m pretty sure he is) I feel like Leah would also like it but she’s not as big of a stan

Unlike her brother she’s more of a hard stan (into harder/darker concepts) but does appreciate a good soft concept

She loves when you do the choreography for any of her favorite songs

You guys love going to concerts together she buys you guys light sticks and you buy the matching decals for it

Even thought she understands she still gets slightly jealous of your biases

You guys probably have a shared room of your stuff and have posters everywhere lmao

Overall you guys are a super cute stan couple and I feel like it’s one where everyone wishes their bond was like y’all’s and she is just super supportive of whatever keeps you happy

I don't think it was just a concept for skz I think they really believed everything they've said when they were fighting against the industry, however things have changed. They are one of biggest kpop groups now and I think they have this certain greed. I felt that with bts too when they really blew up, or taylor swift, she is already a really big worldwide known artist yet she wants to break all the records even if it means losing quality of her music and not letting other smaller artists shine. I feel like something similar is happing with skz, they are at this point in their career where they can achieve huge things, so they don't really care about anything else. After met gala they said several times that they are proud to be the first group to attend, even though it was with tommy hilfiger, they were happy to collaborate with a western artist, even though it was charlie puth, they are happy about marvel, etc. I think they are happy to do all the "cool stuff" and just don't care if it means associating with problematic people. It is dissopointing that they've become the thing they fought against and instead of using their influence for good they are using it to promote zionists brands

truly i just brought up the concept thing because all of it, all of they essentially wrote about and talked about in their music becomes meaningless when you know they are not taking a stance right now and literally not having a backbone it sucks truly. obviously idk what is like to be the biggest artist but i imagine some artists just want more and more and don't want it to stop and don't really think through about what they are doing and it doesn't help that they are in an industry that enables everything and everyone so they must think it's okay and just throw whatever morals they have to the side and idk if it's the case here but i mean... i think it's fair to question that. and btw, i know zionism is heavily entrenched in this industry it has truly been in every corner for years and nobody has put a stop to it because so many of these people in power are zionists so it's truly hard to fight against it but it doesn't mean you shouldn't fight you SHOULD. and i know they might not know it about it in depth hell even i wasn't well versed on it that much months ago and now i'm making my life's mission to stop it but i would genuinely hope they listened to their fans and would try to slowly distance themselves from zionists and try to understand but it has been so insanely disappointing that after lmb it has become worse and it's so blatantly obvious that some of these zionists in the music industry aren't being that accepted in the west anymore so they are migrating to the kpop industry and these companies just let them because they only gaf about western validation nowadays so they just let anyone in without a care in the world and it's just crazy to me. i don't know what will happen next my expectations are very low but obviously, as someone who has stanned them for years, i have a little hope reserved because i am not the type of person to assume the worst obviously it has been really hard but you know unless they give a clear i don't gaf about anything you people say then i'm out but are so much shit left unsaid and shit we don't know that might be happening behind the scenes that just make you question everything. to me it's all very mind boggling at the moment. but yeah, when these artists start to get big and the money starts to come in it's like everything they were previously is gone and they seem out touch and all of that and seeing that in real time is crazy i don't even if that's the case here but ahm yeah i really hope it isn't

I'm here to once again complain about kpop redditors. Does kpop reddit suck? Yes. Have I found a better place to read kpop opinions? No. Twitter is a mess, Army Twitter isn't generally very critical of BTS, in any way, and tumblr still isn't the best place for kpop discourse. So, since I don't know many kpop fans, reddit it is.

Now, on this specific occasion I want to comment on the discourse surrounding BTS's solo careers. There are several bad takes I keep seeing that make me question if those people even know BTS.

V is more interested in an acting career / V is not interested in music. He did one (1) drama and has only in passing mentioned acting again, so why are people fixated on him acting and why do people think he doesn't want to do music? He has the most solo songs out of the vocal line, almost all of them self-written, and he's always recc'ing songs and sharing snippets of stuff he wrote. Does that seem like something a person with no interest in music would do?? On the same vein...

Jin wants to be an actor. / Jin isn't interested in music. He would rather shoot variety content. He literally said in the 2022 Festa that what had interested him in acting in the first place was the opportunity to try different things, but since he's already doing that as an idol he doesn't have an interest in acting anymore (he didn't say it couldn't happen though). Also, Jin did variety to make Army happy and to promote his music. He's too shy and loves to perform on stage so I doubt he's going to ditch music to become a full-time variety entertainer. He's also written several songs. Just because he's not as full of passion for music as some of the other members, or because he also likes food, alcohol and gaming, that does not mean he wishes to quit being an idol. He's worked too hard and come too far for kpop stans to say he'd rather just act.

J-Hope will be the most successful long-term. / J-Hope has the most solo potential. I know redditors love to hype up the least popular members in a group, but this is bullshit. So far, there is nothing that indicates J-Hope will be the most popular member. People used to say this because he released fun songs like CNS, but JITB is not GP-friendly. Yes Hobi is a great dancer, has great stage presence, is a good rapper, is charismatic, etc. but every member has qualities and if J-Hope isn't the most popular member among Army is it really likely that he will become the most popular member worldwide? Imo, apart from CNS, he hasn't made a lot of music that would appeal to a very broad audience, he hasn't even danced much as a solo artist, and his personality isn't any better than the other members. I don't know the future, but the amount of people who even now say J-Hope will be the most successful member long-term makes me think this is another case for over-hyping the "underdog" and undervaluing the "overrated" members.

Suga is only successful in SK. / Suga will only be successful as a producer. That That was a hit and Suga didn't just produce the song, he featured in it and is one of the reasons why the MV and song are so great. He also featured in Girl of My Dreams which did well internationally and has been receiving international coverage by attending NBA games and now the Valentino collab. Plus, D2 was really successful considering it's a pre-Dynamite release and is not pop. Suga has amazing stage presence, many people love his fast and aggressive rapping the most among the rap line, he's real, honest, and straight-forward in a relatable way, he talks about real issues in a relatable way, he's great at promoting their sponsors, he's charismatic and masculine yet cute, he knows how to make exciting yet accessible music, etc.. Stans often say he will be the most successful of the rap line but since popular takes are frowned upon they also say he will only be popular in Korea or that he might just become a producer. In how many different ways must the man tell you he wants to be on stage and making music for a really long time for you to get it?

JK may become the most successful soloist but only because he makes generic pop music. / He works better in a group and only his collabs were successful. / He's boring, shy and doesn't know how to promote himself. I know Jungkook is so popular no one wants to give him proper credit, but he only makes generic music, really? I agree that some of his music is generic, but in the end that is what people like (tons of legends made generic music but it's not considered generic anymore because it's old) and stans seem to conveniently forget all the other songs he's done: Euphoria? A bit generic, yet very successful and pretty timeless, but Begin and My Time? Not generic, that's 2 to 1. Still With You? Not generic, very popular all things considered. Magic Shop? A bit generic, but one of the most popular bsides that BTS themselves love to perform, with nice lyrics and concept. Stay? A bit like Magic Shop but it's the only unit song they still perform and imo one of the songs in BE that aged the best. My You? Aanother fan song. Fan songs tend to be a bit generic and sentimental but he only wrote the lyrics; My You wasn't supposed to become a real song and he was only given 3 instrumentals to choose from. Left & Right? As generic as Bad Decisions and Vibe, and not a solo or self-composed track, but no one calls Jimin generic for those songs. Film Out and Your Eyes Tell? Fans literally rave about those songs, but often seem to forget that it was Jungkook who wrote them for his mixtape. Love is Not Over? Beautiful, not generic, written by Jungkook, and he also wrote parts in Run BTS, Telepathy, Autumn Leaves, Run, No More Dream. Stay Alive? One of the least generic OSTs ever, but I guess it doesn't count because he didn't write it? Dreamers? Sounds like a FIFA song but grows on you like crazy. People love Waka Waka and no one calls it generic. Dreamers is like the new Waka Waka so why is it generic instead of a bop? Because Jungkook has great pop vocals, admires Westen pop artists and has some generic songs and song covers (mostly collabs or unofficial releases), he's being pigeonholed. It's not that I disagree that his current style, or image, is mostly pop and very GP-friendly, but the same could be said of BTS in general, yet we know they have range and aren't just basic or whatever. Saying Jungkook will only become successful because he writes generic music as if he doesn't have the ability to write different styles or as if BTS aren't popular because they also appeal to the GP is just condescending. Also, JK isn't the only shy artist out there and he's had to represent BTS by himself many times; he can do it. Left&Right wouldn't have broken any kind of records if not for JK and Dreamers and Still Alive did pretty well under the circumstances (one being the soundtrack of a boycotted WC with almost no promo and the other being a webtoon OST). Lastly, JK not promoting himself is also a weak argument since that's mostly Hybe's responsibility and he hasn't even debuted yet. Anyway, I just think there are too many double standards when it comes to Jungkook.

I've never really gotten into Black Pink, I cant tell you why exactly but I think it's because I've never actually connected with the music??? And the fandom clashes were too often with Blinks. Dont get me wrong, a lot fandoms are like this- everyone has toxic/crazy fans but man, the things some of them said were HORRIFIC.

Honestly I liked dynamite as well LMAO- I like all of their music, generally. From their early days debuting to now. I became an Army when I was young and they were freshly debuting, like around 7-8 and so perhaps I have an overwhelming bias but I support wherever they want to go with their music. I'm literally a metal head that listens to Kpop the other half of the time 🕴 these dudes made me switch my taste sjdhsksj. I also dont listen to pure rap BUT FOR JHOPE, RM, AND YOONGI - Anything is possible. I say that as if I dont have Jhopes music on repeat aidjsjsj

And like, the only people I see get pissy over Jimins looks is people who dont like them. I've seen "army"s talk shit over Namjoons and Hoseoks looks though. Dont get me wrong you can have your opinions and preferences but you ain't gotta be an ass about it and express it ever 5 minutes and where the idols can see it. yeah i didn't really have an ult group nailed down for a year or two!! i mean, i loooved bts, but i listened to a lot of everybody. it wasn't until i got into seventeen and ateez and monsta x that i was like oh my god they're it for me <333 so bp was catchy at the beginning but once i settled down it's not my style!

dynamite isn't the same style as the rest of their songs and it's an entirely different vibe so i can see if you view bts as their other songs and then this new one gets released and it's totally different, how it wouldn't be pleasant. but it's a guilty pleasure of mine!! it's just a feel-good kinda thing <3

4: Billlie - Ring x Ring

Wow, ANOTHER rookie group??? This has gotta be the last one on the top ten list, right? Jeez...

Billlie, huh? Billlie. With three Ls? Sure, why not. My first reaction when I heard the song was just “god damn it, I hate that this slaps, because now I have to stan a group called Billlie” haha

Their concept is so unique and strange haha... they’re looking for a missing person? Or something? Is it supernatural somehow? In their Christmas song comeback, they have a yeti named The SNOWY Man? With SNOWY in All Caps? They added a member during the promotions for this song, with her debut stage being Ring x Ring’s goodbye stage... is that part of the lore? She’s not the Billlie that they’re looking for, right? All the lyrics in this song are about looking for this Billlie person, I think, and they’re kinda dark. “Is it blood?” “Is she dead?” “Can we talk? Not anymore” etc. That’s all so weird, and the music video is kinda disjointed, with the lore scenes and dance scenes clashing a bit, aesthetically speaking. But to be honest, there’s something kind of endearing and kind of fun about all of this. I’m on board, haha. I’m not gonna get super into their lore or whatever, but I’m down to see where all of this goes. And damn, this song slaps. 

The synths in this song are so absolutely blaring haha. That turned a lot of people off, I know that because I saw a lot of people talking about how they think this song is garbage. They’re wrong though, because the noisiness of this song is exactly what makes it good. It’s not just that the synths are blaring, it’s that they sound so urgent. That fits their concept so well. This song sounds like a race against time. From the moment the song begins, it gets your adrenaline pumping. The autotune on their voices is tasteful too, not just because it sounds cool, but also because it makes it sound kind of off, kind of uncanny. Combined with how frantic the song is, I think it serves to give the vocals a sense of like... worry, or something. If that makes sense. That’s what I get out of it anyway. It sounds like an internal monologue you’d be having in a panicked situation. Am I reading too much into this?

God, this instrumental just goes and goes and goes and goes. There were so many minimalist girl group songs this year, but this song makes up for it by being maximalist as hell. And while a lot of those minimalist songs ranked highly on my list, as I’m sure you’re aware by this point, I mean... man, I really needed this haha. Ring x Ring just makes my brain light up. There’s so much STUFF. The first moment when I realized I was in for a treat was right at the beginning lol, right after the intro synths but right before the first lines are sung. It has that blaring, urgent-sounding synth and then this little synth melody that sounds like... like glass? Does that make sense? The synth sounds like glass. idk lol. It does though, listen to it. How would you describe it? And then Siyoon sings her first lines in that robot voice, while the instrumental explodes underneath her. This instrumental just has so much punch.

And damn, that chorus is so catchy. Both the “come find the miiiiiiissing” part, which is catchy in the way that many pop song choruses are, and the “oeroun himihan sumaneun ireumdeuri” part, which is catchy because it’s so frantic, so urgent, so fight-or-flight, especially when Suhyeon comes in with the vocal layering under her that raises the melodrama of the part up a couple notches... it’s great. This song is so great. The chorus ends with a more relatively calm part, the “neo-e bell-i ullimyeoooon (it’s truuueee)”, but then the panic is ramped right back up as the next verse begins. How many songs transition from chorus to second verse by turning their volume up? 

And that dance break... oh my god. That dance break. That dance break, though. Even without watching the choreo, just on audio alone, that part just hits like nothing else. 

Alright, I think I’m done here. I could go on and on. I’m not even gonna get into how incredible the bsides are. Hopefully I’ll do that in a separate list haha. I’m not even gonna talk about Kim Suyeon, now going by Sheon, who wasn’t in this song, but obviously is a pretty big deal, and was one of my favorite GP999 contestants and I am so happy for her. I’m definitely not gonna talk about Lee Soomin, who is known for being a predebut member of this group as well as a predebut member of Weki Meki AND Weeekly. There’s a lot that goes into this group and my decision to put them at the number 4 spot, but honestly, just this song would be enough.

I thought, in the meantime, I’d answer the questions you have left me so far, so you can get to know me a little bit better too!🤗 I’m not going to publish the questions directly but I’m just going to introduce myself by answering them in a text, I hope that’s okay!♥️

I’m Maddie, I’m 20 and live in Austria :) I’m currently studying English and Literature at university because I absolutely love the English language and I read A LOT😅 it’s not my dream course but it will do for now. I’m going to apply for a film university in January/February to study either Screenwriting or Production (depending on which one I get into) because it has always been a dream of mine to write my own film or tv show one day… big dream, I know… we’ll see where that goes

I got into Kpop through a friend who showed me an NCT and GOT7 music video (NCT’s Make A Wish, literally the day it came out, and GOT7 Not By The Moon, I think it was). I immediately fell in love with the visual of the music video itself and the flow of the music. Obviously I found the guys extremely attractive too😅 and I fell in love with Jaebeom’s voice right away🥰. So yeah, I haven’t been a Kpop stan for too long but I’m very passionate about it.

Fun Fact: when I found Exo and iKon, I realised that I had been listening to their songs without realising it was Kpop, haha. I used to listen to iKon kinda a lot I guess because I already knew most of their songs without knowing about them.

The first group that I really really got into was GOT7. I still think they are one of the funniest groups that has ever existed and it’s the saddest thing ever that they could have become so much bigger if it weren’t for jay why pee. I also got into EXO pretty quickly and I still really like them but with there not being much content, it’s hard to keep with them regularly, but I listen to their music all the time and at least three songs are always in my monthly playlists. After GOT7 got free in January, I’ve started focusing more on their solo stuff (ESPECIALLY JAYB AND YUGYEOM BC I LOVE THE KRNB AND KHH SCENE) and I love it!!! I found Seventeen very quickly after getting into Kpop, thanks to the Tag episode and Minghao😂 Again: once I heard some of their songs, I really felt like I’ve heard them before, especially Left & Right and Home… maybe I have, maybe it’s just my brain playing tricks on me, but the seemed so familiar and that’s actually also what drew me so much into them. The feeling of familiarity and comfort these 13 men radiate is like nothing I’ve ever seen or experienced. I went through a very tough time throughout my teenage life and honestly, I’m not sure where I would be now if it wasn’t for these guys (as well as Exo, GOT7, iKon, and many more!) being able to distract me and make me laugh and be happy… sounds cliché but it’s crazy how much music can effect and help people!

Biases? Oh god… I know I asked you to tell me about yours but choosing my own is SO HARD😅 so, first of all: definitely Wonwoo. I admired him from the start because I relate to him in a lot of ways. Minghao is definitely also one of them, as well as Jeonghan and Hoshi has been testing me a lot in the past few weeks… Mingyu too… that’s the life of a Carat I guess :) from other groups: Chanyeol, Hanbin, Bobby, Jaebeom, Yeji, Jennie, Rosé, Jin (only based on Run BTS), Soobin, Yeonjun, Sunwoo, Sangyeon, Chanhee, Sejun

There’s so many more probably😂

Talking about biases, talking about Hanbin: Minnie and the (ex) love of her life… well, unless you’re following the Alternative Ending, then it is the love of her life🤗 I based Minnie kinda off of me in some aspects because I knew that if I do that, I’ll be able to write her the best way I can because I’m just writing about what I’d do and think and stuff :) now why B.I? For one: he deserves the world and if I can give him happiness in the story, then I will. Also, Jennie and Hanbin got shipped kinda a lot I guess, so there are a lot of pictures I was and will be able to use. And yes, I’m an iKonic too! :)

About updating: I really don’t have a routine, although I wished that I’d do. I update whenever I feel like it but since I love writing a lot, I tend to get inspiration very quickly and just like to upload stuff, whether that’s Minnie chapters, Jealousy Looks Good On You, or something from my inbox 🤗 I hope that once I’ve caught up with uni stuff, I get into a routine that I can let you know about!
