this might seem a little insane but ive been thinking about this topic lately and figured i'd share some of my rambles in your ask box, perhaps you'll also find it interesting: the original concept of comphet, as in, adrienne rich's, is obviously polilez nonsense. but a couple aspects of how the term "comphet" is used nowadays in social media might actually have some truth to them. i don't use the term that much anymore since it's become so broad, with so many different connotations. i've come to find that, in some cases, it's accurately describing the phenomenon of meta attraction, a concept in sexology. now, i've got my own criticisms regarding sexology as a field, and especially some of Ray Blanchard's claims... but allow me to explain what i've been thinking: meta attraction to men, in this case, is when you experience arousal of some sort in sexual situations with men, but you aren't actually physically attracted to the man, his body and genitalia and so. you can't even fall in love with men. instead, the arousal is the product of an attraction to yourself. in trans women who fit the autogynephilia category, they are actually exclusively gynephilic, but may experience arousal when they're with men, because comparing themselves with men makes them feel "more like a woman," it makes them feel validated. they're attracted to themselves as women, being with men is simply a proxy by which they experience this attraction to their conceptual womanhood. somewhat similarly, but obviously with a different etiology, some women (as in adult female human this time), especially if they've undergone psychological trauma, aren't attracted to men or male bodies at all, ranging from lack of attraction to active repulsion, but may end up in situations with men as self harm, seeking some kind of gray area consent/nonconsent that makes them feel victimized, vulnerable, endangered, small. they're experiencing meta attraction fueled by masochism, by an erotic target location error; the erotic target being themselves, how they look in comparison to the violent male. this hypothesis i've been thinking of regarding what actually constitutes as legitimate "comphet" has been helping me a lot, sorting out my feelings and organizing them. it just makes sense. there can even be feminist analysis surrounding this aspect of sexology. it honestly helped me heal from trauma and made me more willing to assert my boundaries. i don't need to give in to men's advances just because i hate myself and have some kind of impulse to hurt myself further. recovery is possible and i genuinely want to heal now. so, what do you think?

honestly i’m not sure about the arousal part, it’s interesting for sure but i don’t think lesbians face arousal during sex w men caused by them imagining themselves in contrast to the man. i do think someone traumatised might put themselves thru that but the reasoning for it that u came up with has the groundworks of a good sexology theory…. but i don’t think it reflects reality

once damian’s older i think he’ll surpass bruce easily (and possibly dick too). everyone else im really so so about. i’d rank babs and tim just after bruce probably. people act like tims only ability is his intelligence when he’s also one of the best staff fighters on the planet and it’s weird. steph is down towards the bottom because a lack of formal experience compared to everyone else, but is still very powerful when she hits. duke also has less experience but an edge with his powers and training w cass. jason…. he’s deffo closer to the top but idk i subscribe to the idea that there’s always going to be some subconscious adjustment to the new body he’s stuck in. he’s taller, he’s very capable, he’s a master of weaponry. but like pretty much everyone else he doesn’t have the physical advantage that someone like cass or damian have. i do not believe he can take dick grayson in a fair fight. sorry. partially for realism but mostly for tragic robin legacy reasons, yknow?

I remember you being something of a scholar on christian theology. I have a question if you don't mind. My tumblr is full of people clowning on american conservative catholics that are angry that the pope basically fired that bishop in Texas, and the tumblr posters saying "lol u disagree with the pope that makes you disagree w/ god's word" or "that makes u a protestant" etc etc.

And while I do enjoy dunking on the trad caths, I think I heard at some point that the pope isn't always talking with his authority as god's most special boy on earth. That most of the time he is just being a human and therefore could be wrong/make errors. Not that I care about the jerk bishop losing his job, but I'm curious, how do we know when the pope is or is not talking with the authority of God backing him up? Does he have to say a special phrase at the start and end of the speech, or hold both hands up above his head, or something?

Okay so what you're referring to here is actually the concept known as papal infallibility, which is one of my favorite pieces of Catholic canon for one very simple reason:

You learn about it as being essentially the Pope is God's most special boy on Earth and what he says is always directly spoken to him from God and therefore is infallible. And if you are like me when you first hear about this concept, you will immediately get trapped in shower arguments for the rest of your life fantasizing about calling the Pope homophobic and arguing for the Catholic church to please stop being so goddamned homophobic all the time.

This is when you learn that papal infallibility is much more fallible than it is made out to be, and this is basically the source of the issue with Strickland, Torres, and any other Bishop that Francyman has decided to give the boot. See, papal infallibility isn't merely a divine play-pretend godmode button, it's a complex and intricate place within theological debate and Vatican hierarchical bureaucratic structure.

Without going into too much of a in-depth explanation, another way to think of papal infallibility is that it's essentially the Holy Roman Catholic version of the President of the United States declaring an executive order that bypasses the Senate. Infallibility is used for similar reasons--it's got a semi-strict set of rules attached to its usage, which means that the Pope is not constantly infallible, but rather that the Pope as God's chosen elect on Earth therefore commands His greatest attention, which allows the Pope direct intercession and communication with God on paths that the Church as a body should walk.

There are usually supposed to be bureaucratic machinations for dethrocking or deposing a bishop, much of which is directly connected to confirming and providing direct evidence for certain crimes that the Holy See would consider too serious to allow him to continue serving in his position. But the Pope is the divinely elected God-Emperor Best Favorite of Oily Josh and his Daddio Self, so generally speaking when it comes to the Pope, there's always the option baked in for him to say "Fuck you I'm the Pope and you're going to do what I say without precedent".

This is the core of the issue for the current Strickland debacle--there might not be hard-and-fast written rules stating that Strickland can be removed from office through traditional means, but Francis doesn't approve of what he's preaching and using his office for since it's causing the minorest of itty-bitty issues with his principled stance of being The Pope That Liberals Might Vaguely Not Hate As Much. So he's functionally exercising a form of papal infallibility by skipping over procedures and etiquette to tell Strickland "Fuck you I'm the Pope and you're going to do what I say without precedent", and Strickland is going "But I thought you would only do that to bishops who belong to brown countries :(", and here we are.

one criticism i’ve seen a few ppl have abt gon during his actions during the CAA is that he didn’t know kite for very long or very well, and so it doesn’t make sense that gon would have lost himself so quickly and entirely.

and ofc it’s fine for ppl to have this opinion, but i disagree, bc i feel like it’s a blatant simplification and misunderstanding of gon’s character, what his development during the CAA was rly caused by, and what it meant; this is what this analysis is abt.

while it’s true that gon didn’t know kite for very long or very well, that’s not really relevant when it comes to what’s affecting gon so deeply.

firstly, let’s not forget that kite saved him from a foxbear mother who was trying to protect its cub all those years ago. and when they meet again years later, he saves him & killua (along w killua pushing him out of the way) from an ant that was nearby.

while these scenes can be easy to gloss over, they’re also both definitely important, esp the first save; i believe gon idolized kite the moment he did, cementing him as a “golden figure” in his life/mind, and why wouldn’t he? he was a very little boy who was in life-threatening danger and then was swiftly saved right before anything fatal could occur.

at the same time, he was negatively affected by kite’s actions and words (but more his words than anything), which were to punch and chastise him bc his own ignorance has caused kite to have to take the life of a creature’s life. i believe that this, along w gon alr feeling abandoned by ging (ik gon often plays it off well, but i feel like he’s been displaying he’s insecurities surrounding that since the beginning), the other “golden figure” in his mind/life, encouraged his feelings of weakness and lack of self esteem.

those feelings of admiration of kite, probably thinking “wow, he’s so cool and strong!” and feelings of disappointment towards himself, probably thinking “and i must be anything but”, had been festering inside of him for years, the same way the effects of ging’s abandonment had. from the beginning, gon has felt the need to prove himself using his own strength, or else he’s weak and unworthy; it’s a dangerous and destructive cycle born from his black-and-white mindset.

the same way gon blamed himself for kite’s death, he blamed himself for the mama foxbear’s death. if he had known better, if he had been stronger, then that animal wouldn’t have had to die bc of him. kite wouldn’t have died bc of him.

so, basically, it’s not just kite dying that set gon off, it’s how it made him feel abt himself; personal insecurities and doubts that he alr had since early in the series began to bubble and overflow before eventually erupting entirely.

secondly, as i mentioned before, kite and ging are gon���s “golden figures”: the mentors he admires, the ppl he sees as being sm above him, and he needs to reach them in order to be worth what we wants to do in the first place, his over-arching life goal; successfully meeting ging. to him, kite’s worsening state and then eventual confirmation of death all say that if he can’t do smth as important as saving and fixing his friend, fixing his own mistake, then he’s definitely not worthy of meeting ging. he’s not worthy of anybody or anything except suffering.

thirdly, while their time together was fairly limited, it wasn’t like it was devoid of meaningfulness; kite served as an important mentor to both killua and gon when they rly needed it, and he helped them survive through his actions, words, and influence (such as the time he saved gon’s life again, this time from centipede, and when he advised gon to stay focused w his eyes open & to always destroy the head).

personal h2o lore & mermaid rules explanation

disclaimer: h2o: just add water is by no means a scientific show, the creators even said that they didn't put much thought into the specifics of anything, but if you are like me and Upset that they didn't, this is for u <3

disclaimer 2: these are my personal best-of-my-ability explanations, but they r Not canon at all, and absolutely feel free to disagree!

here we go!!

1. are the girl's human forms and mermaid forms separate bodies?

short answer: no, they aren't--but the episode red herring does make it seem that way, when emma's red hair is only in one form. however, if they were separate bodies, emma's finger cut in season 1 and rikki's head injury in season 2 which they both got in mermaid form would not have stayed when they transformed back (but they did!) it's more of a bodily permanent-to-not-permanent basis on what stays and what leaves during a transformation.

long answer: opalsiren also has a detailed post on this if you're curious (and i do highly recommend giving it a read bc it changed my life, reshaped my reality, watered my crops, etc etc) but i'll try to explain it here too

if we look at what stays and what leaves during a transformation, we can sorta see a pattern

freckles, scars, wounds, hair texture/length, bodily proportions (mermaid forms age along with their human forms) and eye color all stay the same, meanwhile clothes, accessories, makeup, hair dye, etc, all disappear. furthermore, anything permanent, genetic, or breaking the skin keeps, and anything temporary or sitting on top of the skin disappears, and then reappears later. (ex: hair length stays consistent because hair follicles penetrate the skin and go beneath it, semi-permanent hair color doesn't cuz it inly sits around the hair follicles. would dying your hair fully & permanently transform too? mayhaps!)

a scientific way to explain this would be that the transformation process takes into account genetics and then the current state of your body before making the switch into either form. so, during the 30 seconds it takes to transform, the process involves reading the genetic code (eye color, skin color, face shape, etc, and also perhaps it only does this the first time, and saves the information for the future?) and then the state of the body (wounds, age, weight, hair length, etc) and then proceeds to alter the genetic makeup to the incoming body type with the new information. (and all of this needs to be read so that the transformation doesn't mess with anything integral or unnecessary, and doesn't cause unwanted changes!! for example i like to think a mermaid bleeding out would not transform back, in order to preserve the body's energy and resources)

2. how do the girls get clean?

this is by far the most common question i see and. u know what... it is a good one to ask LMAO

as i went into before, anything that doesn't permeate the skin will disappear when transforming. this includes dirt and grime!! it will just disappear, then come back like everything else. while they could wash their face and arms in mermaid form, their legs will still be grimy cuz theyre unaccessible!! so like,, how is no one complaining that the girls smell all the time?

so first, fun solution; i like to think that a good solution is that the transformative process is cleansing, as in they straight up Turn Into Water so every single impurity on their skin (such as dirt, oil, makeup maybe, etc) is washed away in both human form and mermaid form in the 30 seconds it takes for them to fully turn. this is a little hard to explain scientifically but i think it would make more sense when given the magic treatment--it just does it bc it can.

semi-boring solution, probably the canon one: their mermaid skin IS their human skin, so cleaning a mermaid tail is just like cleaning their human legs. would make sense as to why they all take baths w their tails! this is also probably the canon explanation, because when dr. denman transforms a scale in her lab, it shifts right back into skin, meaning it is, essentially, the same material. this conflicts a teensy bit with previously established lore in my opinion but . yknow. it is a mermaid show for kids 💀

actual boring solution: there is a canon specific amount of water content that transforms them, which i believe is like above 32% or something. if a liquid contains 32% water, boom, tail. however, it wouldn't be too hard to find alcoholic wipes that contain less than that water content, which they could use to clean the parts of their body that the mermaid tail obscures. straight bars of soap are sometimes less water content than that too, so they could pretty easily just scrub then dry-wipe it off. is it... more sanitary/safe than just washing with water? probably not! but it's an option! and if you dont vibe with the above options, this is a p good alternative

3. hey, what the Fuck is the moonpool

fantastic question. literally no one knows. they are soooo vague with this piece of lore it actually makes me upset considering how COOOL it is that there is an ancient magic pool in a volcano on an abandoned island. they fumbled the bag so hard guys

heres like, pretty much everything we know canonly abt it (in h2o lore only, not mako mermaids, all my homies hate mako mermaids)

- it works hand-in-hand with the moon & planets

- it, or the water in it, is sentient, and is aware of any dangers to it

- it seems to have a connection to fate (as in, the 1950's mermaids & their connection to the 2000's girls)

- there are several of these (implied, but there could just be only one other in ireland)

- each one has a specific set of water-based powers to give out, evenly divided among each person that jumps in the moonpool in a full moon, and these powers can be amplified on specific nights. (this also seems to correspond with personality)

-it is magic. (this is a point because it is Very hard almost near impossible to explain it scientifically)

and yeah! i personally have a few headcanons for What the moonpool is and how it works, but i think it's a lot more fun to make your own so go crazy (and there is no way i could explain it cuz i have like 8000 thoughts abt it and None of them fit in a tumblr post) !! if youre curious u can read my fic about it tho B) xoxo

8. common fandom opinion everyone is wrong about

im trying to not go for the easy ones here and am pretending that 'fandom' means me and mutuals and mutual adjacents. so here's a controversial one that i think i disagree w a lot of people on: john definitely hit them. not necessarily regularly, but enough that it was still part of their experience of him.

and this isnt even because i think it makes sense for his character, though i do, and it's not bc i think it's more interesting that way or anything, because it isn't whatsover. it's just because i think supernatural, the show, wants us to think he hit them. its intentional on the parallels it draws even if it refuses to ever say it directly (because it refuses to say ANYTHING directly, come on, this is like spn stone number 1, every core theme is alluded to).

ive been steadfast on this since 1x14 (nightmare) which is the first (of many other) episodes to intentionally parallel sam and/or dean to kids with physically abusive parents. u can make a case this is about hunting as physical abuse by proxy -which in the case of nightmare it kind of is and i could see! - but its not just about that, especially looking at, say, 7x03 (the girl next door). i have better posts about this somewhere so i wont go into detail so this isnt too long.. cause these keep being WAY too long.

there really is so much in mainstream spn fandom that this took me a while. but my absolute hatred is for Dean Winchester Is Sam Winchester's Parent. yes that is an ao3 tag. yes i have even probably tagged my shit with that ao3 tag before. I DON'T CARE. deangirls, PICK A SIDE. if dean is sam's sole parental figure and john is an afterthought (just blatantly canonically not true but wtv).... that makes dean absolutely AWFUL for the way he treats sam in multiple pre-canon episodes nevermind in canon. and that literally is not even fair to dean. yes dean's parentified and in some ways i am sure he 'raised sam' but 1. hes not Actually sam's dad and 2. most importantly, if he WAS, he certainly would not be a GOOD dad. he is a child too for most of the time he's 'raising' sam.

half the tragedy is that he can't be a good parental figure, no matter how much he wants to. because he's not capable. because he's four years older. because he doesn't have a good parental figure himself. he occupies this weird position with more authority than brother and less knowledge than parent. hes left alone to feed and look after and control sam but he's still shouting in his face and shoving him and belittling him but you can't even blame him because he's twelve (plot of spn christmas ep). sorry thats so fucked up and so interesting actually. like please. can we look at the power dynamic here. oh and the people going 'dean was sam's real dad!!' are the same people who then insist sam and dean have an equal relationship. thank you for the long & thought out response. while i do fully agree with you on stances like prison abolition & the myth of the stranger pedophile scapegoat, my question and discomfort with jimmy’s actions comes not so much from a political/philosophical standpoint but from a very human emphatic one. i put myself in the shoes of the girl he groomed and abused and imagine people listening to and enjoying the music of my abuser and it makes me sick to my stomach. so thats more where my guilt and discomfort comes from. that said i can’t say that their music doesn’t have an impact or isn’t enjoyable. i also agree with you that this mass outrage and very public renunciation and demand for punishment is very much a social mechanism and automatic reaction that quite simplifies a complex situation. however these mechanisms exist for a certain evolutionary purpose after all (sorry my background is psychology) but thats sort of besides the point because im also not a fan of how these things get handled with zero nuance. 

its also true what you said that me or you or anyone deciding to disengage with this band or their music changes nothing in the grand scheme of things, so doing it as some sort of Noble Cause against abuse is useless. so in this case i feel it’s up to personal preference and whether or not i can swallow the cognitive dissonance and discomfort this information arises in me whenever i listen to their music from now on.

re: the emotive aspect im not sure i have much to say other than like Yeah its a very strong one and i dont think its a bad thing at all to have. i got the impression from ur ask--and idk how true this is--that you were wrestling between a desire to return to the music bc you enjoyed it and that response preventing you and feeling a sort of obligation to do one over the other n struggling with that. so i think i approached it as like 'heres ways you can reason w that emotional response and grapple w it if its smth ur agonizing over' or something like that. im also a firm believer in the ways politics shapes the ways we think n feel so my instinct was to tease out some of the structures that may be shaping ur thought processes--which of course i nor anyone but you can fully know. but i dont get that same sense from how u describe it here and either way i think whatever feeling ur having about it is like...i dont want to say its 'valid' but ur allowed to have that and do whatever you want pretty much lol. i cant and am not going to force anyone to engage w the band and theres probably more reasons than i could think to list why its not for everyone even without the sordidness of abuse hanging over it.

the smell of chicken and vegetables fills your nostrils. you’ve cooked dinner for logan, waiting for him to walk down to the kitchen as he said he would.

you sit on the counter, swinging your legs as you swipe through social media, seeing news about mutants everywhere. humans have been trying to get them locked up, away from society, for years.

you then hear footsteps approaching you, and you look up to see logan striding toward you. you smile at him and wave, blushing when he smiles back at you.

“hey, bub,” he greets you and smiles, sitting down on the island chair, “think you could give me some advice?”

he begins to eat his food, using utensils when he needs to. you turn around and grab a bottle of beer from the refrigerator. you turn and place it on the space in front of him. he quietly thanks you and takes a sip.

you place your hands on the counter and ask, “what d’ya need help with, lo?” and tilt your head.

“it’s about jean. can’t tell if she’s into me or not, i mean what am i doing wrong?” he shakes his head in disappointment.

your heart drops, though you’ve known he’s liked jean ever since he arrived at the school. you’ve always been the first to know about every interaction between them because logan would tell you all about it.

a heavy feeling seeps into your chest, the feeling of sadness. all of those actions and helping logan have gone nowhere. you’ve been debating whether or not you should stop trying to get him to love you.

the thing is, you know jean doesn’t love him back because she’s told you multiple times. of course, she loves the attention, she knows she’s an attractive woman but her heart belongs to scott. she’s loyal, and no matter how many times you’ve told logan she doesn’t love him back, he keeps pushing.

you’re taken from your headspace when logan suddenly asks, “y/n? you okay?” with a concerned look on his face, eyebrows furrowed upward as he paused eating.

you turn around and sigh, not able to get a word out of your mouth, logan interrupts, “why have you been avoiding me?”

you laugh in disbelief, “i haven’t been avoiding you, logan—”

“yes, you have. you haven’t talked to me in days, haven’t looked at me in nearly a week. you’re hangin’ out with fuckin’ pinkie pie, emo girl and that metal guy. why?” he argues.

you scoff, “why the hell do you have a problem with me talking to other people? it’s not even romantic, you shouldn’t care. they’re my friends—”

“no, you’re not answering my question. why are you hanging out with them and why are you ignoring me?” he raises his voice, causing you to back up, almost hitting the counter.

you roll your eyes, “i’ve liked you, logan. like how you like jean, and i’ve liked you for months and you haven’t noticed. i did so much for you, i took literal fucking bullets for you even though both of us can regenerate because i didn’t want to take the risk. i helped you get things for jean and how to talk to her. i made you food, did your fucking laundry. who the fuck does that and doesn’t like the person they’re doing it for?”

he stays quiet for a moment, hesitating, “i only tried to like jean because you seemed so pissed off whenever i’d talk. i had to get my mind off you.”

blush still manages to make its way to your cheeks, “i was pissed off whenever you’d talk because all we’d fucking talk about was jean.”

you sit on the counter as logan leans against the island, he offers, “no more jean talk as long as you spend more time with me instead of whatever their names are.”

you smile and nod, “i’d like that a lot. but i do have a movie night to get to,” he furrows his eyebrows, “with ororo.”

his face visibly relaxes and he nods, you hop off the counter and state, “we can talk more tomorrow.”

he nods and smiles, watching you walk away, “night, y/n.”

Still absolutely wild to me that sable's entire friend group can be so into ideological purity that they turn on someone basically on a dime and fully ostracize them (and even tell total strangers online not to interact with that person?) When like. The entire time I knew them, sable had a p much constant habit of picking at people they didn't like for any reason and looking for every excuse to get them kicked from groups, even if they'd been there much longer than sable themself had

Also the time that sable. Y'know. Straight up denied that someone had been getting abused by their mother just bc they thought the person was personally annoying & the person had complained once about not wanting to go to chemo appts w their mom (bc their mom would verbally and emotionally abuse them the entire time) lol lmao

Idk I'm not saying you can't draw a hard line and curate your social media experience or even the people u wanna be around but. Like. Idk it's just exhausting being ready and able to snap on people at a moments notice. It's like straight up cop behavior, literally policing the friend group over what people are allowed to fuckin post or write or think about complex topics on their own fuckin accounts, and feeling like ur under constant scrutiny, that at any moment these same people ur joking around with could turn on you next bc you disagreed abt something or made a joke in poor taste. No grace. No hesitation. You either grovel for forgiveness, or you get cut off. And those who continue interacting with you afterwards will be Monitored, bc you are Tainted, Consorting With The Enemy but not in so many words.

Idk man. I'm fuckin tired of binarist thinking, of a lack of nuance, of turning on people bc they're kind of annoying or they're into yaoi or they're cringe or whatthefuckever. I'm tired of being judgemental of the people around me.

Im not telling anybody to drop them or cut them off or whatever bc demanding ideological purity from anybody is inherently fucked up, but like. Take what they say with a grain of salt. Fuckin ask yourself from time to time, when it comes to interpersonal conflicts, "is this really worth it?"
