SWITCHED AT BIRTH SEASON 5 EPISODE 1 YOUTUBE SERIES
It is a running gag on the show that Adriana likes to watch telenovelas, and she quips that they cannot compete with the real-life drama caused by Angelo. Ivonne Coll as Adriana Vasquez, Regina's mother.Marlee Matlin as Melody Bledsoe, Emmett's mother and Regina's friend who is also deaf.Gilles Marini as Angelo Sorrento (recurring season 1, regular season 2–3): Bay's biological father and Daphne's legal father.Lea Thompson as Kathryn Kennish: Bay's legal mother and Daphne's biological mother.Moffett as John Kennish: Bay's legal father and Daphne's biological father. Constance Marie as Regina Vasquez: Bay's biological mother and Daphne's legal mother.However, she gradually gets better in accepting that Regina and the Kennishes are both her family. Bay can be very impulsive at times, and, at first, does not take the news of the switch well. Bay is a very talented artist who has a particular love for Frida Kahlo. She was raised in the wealthy neighborhood of Mission Hills by John and Kathryn Kennish. Vanessa Marano as Bay Madeline Kennish: the biological daughter of Regina Vasquez and Angelo Sorrento.She also speaks without the accent through almost the entire episode 15 of season 2, "Ecce Mono", which is an alternative reality in which Daphne was raised by the Kennishes from age three and got a cochlear implant. She developed a deaf accent for her role as Daphne, but speaks without it briefly in a scene in season 1, episode 9 where Daphne dreams the switch never occurred, and she was raised as Bay Kennish and retains her hearing. Hard of hearing rather than deaf, Leclerc learned ASL at age 17, before she was diagnosed at age 20 with Ménière's disease which runs in her family. Katie Leclerc as Daphne Paloma Vasquez: the biological daughter of John and Kathryn Kennish.Lucas Grabeel as Toby Kennish: Bay and Daphne's older brother.Sean Berdy as Emmett Bledsoe (regular season 1–4, recurring season 5), Daphne's best friend who is also deaf.Bay is driven by a need to find her biological father, Angelo Sorrento, who left Regina shortly after Daphne went deaf. John learns to relate to his new-found daughter by coaching her deaf school's basketball team and employing her in the office of one of the local chain of car washes that he owns. Both mothers learn to bond with their biological daughters, while often unintentionally angering the ones they raised. Bay discovers that she has inherited her artistic talent from Regina, and Daphne discovers she has inherited John's athletic skill and Kathryn's love of cooking. The girls sometimes struggle with their identities. This arrangement forces the girls, along with both families, to understand their differences and embrace their similarities. The Kennishes invite Daphne and Regina to their home, and after learning that Regina is struggling financially, propose that they move into their guest house with Adriana, an offer that Regina accepts. Daphne is deaf, having lost her hearing as a result of contracting meningitis at age three. It is revealed that the hospital mistakenly switched Bay at birth with Daphne, who has been raised by her single mother Regina and grandmother Adriana in the low-income neighborhood of East Riverside, Missouri. Genetic testing confirms Bay is not the Kennishes' biological daughter. anyway, i hope you love me forever because i will definitely be granting your wish. thanks for the prompt, and i hope you like this!
and, as always: i usually do minimal editing on these, so please don’t judge my writing too much alskjjlkdf
Will will admit, the morning has been quite an adventure in itself.
It started when his cabin awoke with the cries of a distressed Clarisse, who slammed open the door of the Apollo cabin at exactly 3:43 AM and screamed at the top of her lungs, while also banging pots and pans, “THE BABY IS COMING! THE BABY IS COMING! William Andrew Solace, GET your ass over here!”
In all his life, Will’s cured lots of sicknesses and injuries. But never has he had to take care of a woman giving birth.
All in all, he thinks he did pretty well. Save for the almost-fainting part of the birth, he got the baby delivered perfectly healthy and relatively easily (although he’s sure Mellie would disagree), and Coach Hedge was there to even see it.
After handing over the child, the exhausted son of Apollo, savoring the sweetness of the new family’s moment, smiles and excuses himself. He's sure he is going to pass out any moment from both tiredness and excitement, and he is ready to recount all of the past two and a half hours to Cecil and Lou Ellen.
He steps out of the infirmary, surprised by how much lighter the sky has become. The sun rises, spreading its golden glow over the camp, and he has to shield his eyes from the brightness. Despite the beauty, though, there’s a dread that’s settled over the camp, a nervous electricity that has demigods buzzing left and right.
Demigods trudge to Half-Blood Hill, decorated with armor over their bodies. Will frowns, his own heart thudding faster. He can’t quite believe there’s another war about to happen, in just a little bit, after just barely surviving one last summer.
With a jolt, Will remembers the lives lost, the people who’ve slipped from his grasp in the last battle. His face burns with the shame of losing them, of failing them. Why couldn’t I have done better? he scolds himself.
With the prospective battle, he feels an even larger weight on his shoulders, the mass of stress crushing him. He feels as if he is Atlas, carrying the bulk of the universe on his body, doomed to serve this job for the rest of eternity.
The pressure of tears and anger presses against his throat, threatening to let loose. He swallows, trying to suppress it, but he can feel himself failing at doing so; his body shudders, his fists clench. He wants to drop to his knees and sob right here, right now. He’s so useless to everyone here. He’s failed so many people. How many will he fail today?
A voice calls his name from the distance, and for a second, Will stops thinking about all the horrors he’s seen. He turns his head in the direction that he heard the voice, but he can’t seem to find it. He frowns.
“Psst!” the voice calls again, and this time Will realizes it is clearly feminine. He swivels his head to the bushes in front of him, and almost screams when he sees eyes peering at him through the leaves.
For a second, he doesn’t recognize the faces that stare back at him. Only after he rubs his eyes does he realize that it’s Lou Ellen and Cecil. A shaky smile wavers on his lips. “Hey, guys. What are you doing?”
The two wrestle out of the bushes, shoving twigs aside. They rush over to the son of Apollo, excitement plastered over their faces. “Wanna help us scout the enemy?” Lou Ellen asks, her voice rising with enthusiasm. A mischievous sparkle twinkles in her eyes. “I’m practicing my Mist-controlling powers, and I think I’m getting pretty good.”
Will looks at Cecil, who nods in encouragement. “Come on, dude. You’ve been in the infirmary all day. I’m sure delivering a baby is probably more exciting than us, but...” He shrugs, and a sadness envelops his face. “I guess we just don’t know how much longer we have. Don’t you wanna spend it together?”
Will’s heart clutches and his skin prickles with goosebumps. He looks at his two friends, people he’s known for so long. He realizes that Cecil’s right; they don’t know how much longer they have with each other. The realization hits Will right where it hurts.
Taking a deep breath, he nods. “Alright, I could use a break. Let’s do it.”
~~~
Fifteen minutes later, Will, Cecil, and Lou Ellen are clad in black clothing, giggling in the bushes on the outskirts of camp. They watch the enemy wander around, setting up their equipment, shouting to one another. Peering at them, a spark of confusion consumes Will. They look like normal demigods; why are they warring, anyway? Who decided on this? Why can’t they just get along, share their similar stories? The entire thing is pretty pointless and sad, Will thinks, since they could have been friends. But instead, the two camps decided only on warring, setting their differences first and foremost.
It’s a little disheartening, to say the least. Will knows that this is the nature of humankind, that people tend to only see differences. But they are demigods; aren’t they a little above humans? Shouldn’t they know better?
But even then, they still have humanity in them. And as ugly as humanity can be, it’s still humanity. This is what humans are like. People must learn to accept. Will only sighs at this thought.
As he mulls this thought over, Will, Cecil, and Lou Ellen skitter over to Thalia’s pine tree, hoping to get a better view of the Roman demigods. Their faces brighten under the rising sun, illuminating their faces. The warmth seeps through Will’s skin, sinking into his bones. He want to keep that warmth there, absorb the light. He’s afraid of the darkness that might come after the war.
As they reach the tree, Will almost stops in astonishment. Because standing righ there, in a ridiculously bright Hawaiian T-shrit and black jeans, a Stygian sword at his side, stands Nico di Angelo. Will almost trips over himself.
For a second, Will stumbles. What on earth is he doing here? Didn’t he leave camp? Didn’t he go rogue? Didn’t he leave Will here, in the very same place, on a morning much like this one, just a year ago?
Cecil and Lou Ellen stop with him, confusion spilling over their features. “What’s wrong?” Cecil asks, nudging Will. “Dude, we’re in the light. Let’s go.”
Will only shakes his head in response and hurries over to the son of Hades, a strange feeling sparking in his blood. Is it resentment? Is it relief? He’s not quite sure. All he knows is that he never thought he’d see Nico again, and especially not dressed like that.
When Will reaches him, the son of Hades doesn’t seem to notice he’s right there. His dark eyes are also focused on the Roman demigods, peering over them, oozing hatred.
“Nico?” Will whispers, his voice quiet in the morning. Lou Ellen and Cecil crouch by Will, peering over at him in surprise.
Nico whirls suddenly, a look of fear in his eyes. He snaps his sword in their direction, just barely missing Will. The son of Apollo stumbles a bit, trying to jump past it.
The son of Hades’ eyes focus, clearing up as he stares at the three demigods. His face betrays a series of emotions: first confusion, then shock, and finally irritation. He opens his mouth to speak, but Will snaps first. Gesturing to the sword, he hisses, “Put that down! What are you doing here?”
Nico blinks, surprise written over his face. Then he shakes his head and frowns at Will. “Me?” he asks, eyebrows furrowing. “What are you doing here? Getting yourselves killed?”
Will’s blood boils with Nico’s tone. Their first time meeting in over a year, and that’s how he’s going to talk to Will? The son of Apollo scowls. “Hey, we’re scouting the enemy.” Spreading his palms, he assures, “We took precautions.”
A dark eyebrow rises on Nico’s face, a look of doubt painting his face. “You dressed in black with the sun coming up. You painted your face but didn’t cover that mop of blond hair. You might as well be waving a yellow flag.” He rolls his eyes.
Will’s face feels warm, the heat of humiliation coursing through his nerves. “Lou Ellen wrapped some Mist around us, too.”
The two looked over at the girl, whose eyes were widened in surprise. Suddenly put on spot, her own face turns as red as Will’s. She greets Nico and tells him that the demigod next to her is Cecil, a son of Hermes.
A moment of hesitation burns between the four demigods, waiting for the next move. Nico’s eyes switch over the three of them, deciding what to do, testing how great they are. Will puffs out his chest, a look of determination in his eyes. You know me, he wants to say. Don’t play this way.
Finally, Nico kneels and asks about Coach Hedge and his arrival at camp, whether he got here safely. Despite his irritation earlier, Will allows a smile to come over his face at the mention of the satyr. Lou Ellen giggles, and Will nudges her, though a bout of elation envelops him, too. He smiles at Nico, assuring him that the satyr is fine.
Nico asks about the child, a look of momentary excitement passing over his face. The smile on Will’s face widens despite himself, elated to talk about the new baby. “He’s fine, too,” Will promises. “A very cute little satyr boy.” His skin crawls again, but this time with the memory of the birth. He’d never seen such terrifying yet beautiful scenes in his life. A shudder echoes through him. “But I delivered it,” informs the son of Apollo, grimacing. “Have you ever delivered a baby?”
Nico frowns, a look of confusion and disgust rolling over his face. “Um, no.”
Will shrugs and tells him that he just needed the fresh air; the mission with Lou Ellen and Cecil would help him. A grin takes over his face again as he announces, “My hands are still shaking.” He holds out his palms and blinks at them. “See?”
Without thinking, Will takes Nico’s hand. In hindsight, he probably should have considered how Nico would react, and how strange this interaction might be after not seeing each other in months, but he isn’t quite thinking. With the baby’s birth, the potential battle, and with Nico’s sudden appearance, can anyone blame him for feeling frenzied and dazed, with having practically no brain functionality at such an early time in the morning?
A buzz echoes through Will’s palms, electrifying his nerves. His bones resonate, hum, emanate energy. He isn’t sure why this is happening; it’s as if being with Nico again, feeling his fingers in his, he’s unlocked something. For a second, Will sees and feels and hears nothing but the son of Hades. But then, just a split second later, he feels it: a cold, empty darkness, seeping from Nico’s hands. Will’s not sure anyone can quite feel darkness, so this is quite the strange interaction for him. He feels void, alone, as if no one is around. He almost pulls away when Nico does it first.
“Whatever,” he grumbles. “We don’t have time for chitchat. The Romans are attacking at dawn, and I’ve got to-”
Will frowns, but what else did he expect? Of course Nico’s going to want to move straight ahead. A buzz of annoyance echoes in him. He doesn’t like that he’s talking to them as if they don’t understand the seriousness of the situation. Before Nico can continue, he snaps back, explaining that they know what’s going on. He raises an eyebrow at Nico. “But if you’re planning to shadow-travel to that command tent, forget it.”
A look of rage passes over Nico, darkness roiling in his irises. “Excuse me?” he growls, eyes glaring. Will feels that he’s pushed too far, too much, but he stands his ground. Nico just got back to camp; he’s not going to risk his life just for this.
Will holds his chin high. With a look of determination, and as much bravery as he can master in front of the son of Hades, he informs him that Coach Hedge was very descriptive in his warnings of Nico and his shadow-travelling. “You can’t try that again.”
Nico’s jaw clamps hard, anger pouring in bouts. He watches Will daringly, as if saying, Watch me. “I just did try it again, Solace. I’m fine.”
Will almost scoffs. If that darkness he felt just moments ago was any indication, the son of Hades is not fine. Rage boils over in Will’s body; why can’t he just understand that maybe there are people here who actually care that he doesn’t risk himself again? Why is he always the one to put himself in danger?
And yet, he feels a connection to Nico. He knows what it’s like to want to push yourself to the extreme, especially if it means that you save the ones you love. And for this reason, he finds himself even more irritated in Nico. If they’re so alike, then Will finds him just as equally annoying as he finds himself.
He rambles to Nico about how he can feel the darkness oozing from him, the risk he’d be making if he makes that jump one more time. As he does, he watches the son of Hades raise his eyebrow, not surprised, as if he knows what this jump could mean. With a jolt, Will realizes that maybe that’s what Nico wants - to not exist anymore. Red hot tears push against his throat, but he grounds himself. “You are not shadow-traveling. Doctor’s orders.”
Nico opens his mouth and starts streaming excuses about the Romans, but Will won’t have it. He’s not losing Nico after only just now seeing him again. The son of Apollo assures Nico that they’ll take care of them, that it’ll be fine. Lou Ellen even has the Mist to control; they don’t need Nico risking his life.
Nico looks as though he wants to argue, say something, but he chooses wisely to keep his lips sealed. Instead, he stares at Will, dark eyes bearing into blue ones. There’s a depth to them, Will realizes. It’s as if he’s seen terrible, dark things. He looks shattered; broken; cracked. Will’s body relaxes with pity, with remorse, but he stands his ground.
Will’s been begging the gods for Nico to come back for months. He left with barely an explanation, leaving Will at the summit of Half-Blood Hill so many months ago, wallowing in his confusion. He won’t let Nico escape his grasp again, not when he’s only now returned.
A fiery hot tension stretches between the boys as they stare each other down. Will knows Cecil and Lou Ellen are watching them, surprised. The boys hold each other in this strange staring competition, trying to get the other to relent.
But Will’s stubborn, just like Nico is. There will only be one winner in this battle.
Will won’t let Nico slip away again.
Nico sighs in exasperation, throwing his hands up. “Whatever,” he grumbles, and a wave of white hot elation washes over Will. Relief consumes him. He won’t be shadow-traveling, Will thinks, relaxation taking over his body.
Nico continues glaring at Will, but the son of Apollo doesn’t even care. Nico juts his chin forward, and dark wisps of hair fall into his eyes, fluttering over the dark brown irises. “You’ll follow my lead.”
Will smiles, relishing the win of the silent argument. He spreads his hands in a placating gesture. “Fine. Just don’t ask me to deliver any more satyr babies, and we’ll get along great.”
The Selection
For thirthy-five youngers, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince William.
But for Niccolò Jackson, formerly di Angelo, being Selected is a nightmare. It means leaving his home to enter a fierce competition for a crown he doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks. Especially when he knows that his family has rebel affiliations. Just one slip as he talks of them, and he will be executed for treason. So, when he is chosen to participate, he has a simple plan: get in, don’t do absolutely anything to attract the Prince’s attention, and be sent home after the first week.
Of course, things start going down-hill since the first day.
 After saying good-bye to his younger sister Hazel, with the promise of writing, the last thing Nico wants to do is socializing with the other suitors. Not only would it be absolutely tiring, but he also finds it useless, as they are meant to be competitors for the same prize. None of them will cultivate any long-lasting relationship. Not that the others are too heartbroken to see him disappear, they have been eyeing him weirdly since he first set foot down the plane. He isn’t the one from the lowest cast, but most of the others are from the higher ones.
Nico is a Six, or has been so for the last few years. It’s the cast of workers. He doesn’t know how much of a background-check they’ve done at the Palace, how much the Prince actually knows about him. However, it has taken Nico exactly a look at the other two suitors from the lower castes (Elise, a Seven, a manual laborer; James, a fellow Six) to know that they are the charity cases. Every time a Selection is held, people from all castes (except Eights) are brought to the Palace, but it’s always clear that they won’t stay for long. They are often ignored by the other suitors and the Royals. It’s fine by Nico. He will be paid for staying a week.
The gardens are at least pretty. Nico has to admit as much. There’s a maze somewhere, which he doesn’t want to see even from afar, and old statues in white marble are scattered around. If Hazel were here, she would love the place. Nico finds it a bit overboard. There’s a golden plaque on the ground. Nico bends to read the descriptions.
“Forgive me,” someone says, and Nico almost jumps out of his skin. “Are you lost, sir?”
Nico turns around, hiding the cigarette behind himself. Useless, since it just makes the smoke come from behind him. The person he comes face to face with has widened blue eyes. Oh shit.
So much for not being noticed, Nico thinks. In complete silence, he stares at the Prince, and the Prince stares right back at him. Nico hopes that, if he gets away from the situation at hand quickly enough, the Prince will forget his face. Poor people probably look all the same to pricks like him, anyway.
“Hey!” The Prince exclaims, and a smile brightens his features. “You are one of the suitors, aren’t you? I’m Prince William, it’s nice to meet you.”
Prince William extends a hand, and Nico has to switch the cigarette in the other hand to shake it.
“Niccolò Jackson,” Nico says. Should he say that it’s nice to meet him? How is he supposed to know how to greet a Prince? He lets go of the Prince’s hand.
“It’s very nice to meet you,” the Prince continues. “However, shouldn’t you be socializing with the other suitors?”
Nico sighs. “It’s not really my scene. Sorry.” He shrugs.
“Oh.” The Prince rubs the back of his neck, looking around uncomfortably.
“You don’t have to stay,” Nico says. He craves peace and quiet, and he can’t get it when the whole reason he has been taken away from the family in the first place is right in front of him. “You can just go. I’m sure you have very important things to do.”
“I do, as a matter of fact. Greeting every suitor, for example.”
“Consider me greeted.” Nico nods one last time at the Prince, before giving him his back and inhaling the smoke of his cigarette. He really hopes they aren’t being filmed right now, or Sally will kick his ass once he gets home.
“I – you shouldn’t be smoking,” the Prince continues.
“Will you put me in jail if I do?”
The Prince seems even more taken aback, and Nico is starting to feel impatient. He wants to go home and sleep for the next few years, but he can’t, because of course he just had to be one of thirty-five idiots sorted from the whole kingdom. That’s just the kind of luck that follows him around these days.
“Well?” Nico asks again. “Will you put me in jail?”
“Of course no! But it’s bad for-”
“Bad for me, so mind your own business.”
And with that, Nico stomps away. They won’t even notice I’m there, Nico told Hazel before leaving, when she was still in bed with her hair wrapped in her scarf. I’ll be a shadow. I’ll sneak something out of the Palace for you, though. She laughed, until her lungs started burning again, and she got cut off by a heavy round of coughs.
 Nico shares his suite with a guy named something he can’t pronounce. He’s a Two, an actor. He informs Nico of that himself, and also asks whether Nico wants an autograph. It’s almost heartbreaking, how Nico has to inform him that he has never seen any of his movies.
“It must be such an upgrade for you,” the guy continues, from where he is perched on the sofa, watching him unpack through the open door of the bedroom. “Passing from being a Six to a Three. You know you will be a Three when this is all over, don’t you? Of course I will remain a Two, unless the Prince chooses me. Then I’d be a One. Don’t you find it so-?”
Nico doesn’t hear the rest. He closes the door, muttering something about taking a bath. He just sits on the bed, and lets the hours pass. He doesn’t get out of his room until it’s dinner time, when they are brought food into the suite. Actor-boy tells him that he will be dining with the girls in the next suite, and leaves Nico behind.
 The following day the suitors have breakfast together. Only one place is left vacant at the table, by the time food arrives.
“Is it for the Prince?” The girl next to him asks another. “Should we wait for him?”
The other shakes her head. “Oh, no. It’s for Drew Tanaka. She will be having breakfast with her family, though.”
Nico furrows his eyebrows, sipping his coffee quietly. Shouldn’t that not be allowed? They can keep their phones and contact their families, also post on social media, but they shouldn’t be traveling home. And does she intend on traveling home every day?
“Her father’s a lord,” the second girl responds. “Her family lives here.” She snorts. “Didn’t you research anything about the other suitors?”
“I didn’t think it was allowed.”
“And it isn’t,” a third girl says. She sighs. “Honestly. Just don’t talk about breaking the rules so openly at the breakfast table. You don’t even know who is listening.”
Nico feels her eyes on his face, but he doesn’t look up from his coffee. Once again, he wishes he were in his own home, even if it means having to deal with Percy and his obnoxiousness. Maybe he can stay just for a few days, thinking better about it.
When breakfast is over, they are brought to a circular room. The smell of flowers in there is almost nauseating, and Nico wishes he could open the windows. But Jasmine – the woman who showed them around yesterday – is already giving him weird looks. If he were to step closer to the window, she would probably think him in the middle of a robbery of windows. So he walks around the room while he waits for his turn, stopping every once in a while to admire the paintings on the walls.
“You aren’t a Five, are you?”
Nico almost jumps out of his skin. Again. This time at least it isn’t the Prince in front of him, but the third girl from the breakfast table. Nico shakes his head.
“Six,” he says. “But not only Fives can watch art, you know.”
“I guess,” she responds, shrugging a bare shoulder. The girls are wearing elegant dresses, and hers has a particularly large gown. Nico is in a suit, which he looks like an idiot in. “I’m Lou Ellen, Two.”
“Niccolò Jackson,” Nico says. “Six.”
“You already said that.”
Nico shrugs, without anything left to say. He turns back to the painting.
“You don’t look particularly happy to be here,” she continues. “Don’t you want to woo Will?”
Nico turns back to her. “Who’s Will?”
“Prince William.” She doesn’t hide a smile. “He’s a friend of mine. So, are you going to woo him?”
“That’s just the least my charming personality can do,” Nico replies. There’s a smudge of something in the corner of the painting, which is in equal measure disgusting for the viewers and horrifically disrespectful to the artist.
Lou Ellen laughs. “I guess so. Why are you here if you don’t think you can woo him?”
Nico shrugs. “Aren’t they paying us?”
“Chapeau,” Lou Ellen concedes. She takes a deep breath. “You don’t seem very interested in making friends.”
“That’s because we won’t be friends for long. Ten go away after this first week, or fifteen, I didn’t really read all that well. After that, everyone who has stayed will try their best to remain again, beat the others somehow. At some point, people will just be stabbing each other in the back.”
“Will you?”
Nico scoffs. “I won’t stay that long. Me, the other Six, and the girl from Seven. We are the three everyone is certain will leave after this week. We are placeholders.”
Lou Ellen is called in next. They’re going by order of the castes, so Nico is the third-last to go in. He finds the Prince seated at the round table, the breeze entering from the window is ruffling his blond hair. His lips are already pulled in a smile when Nico enters. It makes him shiver.
“Mr. Jackson,” the Prince says. “It’s very nice to see you again.”
The Prince gestures to the enormous teapot and the two empty mugs. There are also many types of sweets, and the lemon-cake Hazel likes so much. Just thinking of her has nostalgia blossom in Nico’s chest, and they have only been apart for a day.
“Are you glaring at the lemon cake?” The Prince asks.
Nico startles. He quickly sits at the free chair. “No.”
“Are you allergic?”
“No.” Nico clears his throat.
“May I offer you some tea?”
“I really despise tea,” Nico replies. He crosses his arms on the chest, leaning back. The Prince pours some for himself. “Also, isn’t it your thirty-third cup?”
The Prince smiles. “Yup. Believe it or not, there are people who enjoy a good cup of tea.”
“I can believe that, but thirty-three in a morning is a bit of a stretch. Won’t you get indigestion or something?”
“Is that a threat?”
“From the one who thought that it would be alright to let you drink thirty-three cups of tea in a morning, maybe,” Nico replies. He grins. “Not for the poor soul who is just the witness. Should I tell the thirty-fifth to let you take a toilet break?”
The Prince laughs. “I really hope you know we are being filmed, and this is a live-stream.”
Nico taps his foot on the ground. He isn’t used to being on camera anymore, although Hazel often posts short videos in which he also appears on her profiles on social media. He doesn’t have to talk in those, though.
“You really know how to put people at ease,” Nico comments. “What are you going to tell me next, that your parents are watching in the next room, ready to intervene if I ask you too much about your toilet habits?”
“They only intervene if you are unreasonably sarcastic.”
“That’s a very charming and fancy way of telling me to shut up.”
“Oh dear – tell me you aren’t one of those eat the royal folks.”
“Didn’t you run a background check on me or something?”
“Well, yes, but I wasn’t shown any of that,” the Prince admits. He shrugs. “So, uh. I don’t know much about you.”
Nico nods, and stares at the table. It’s covered by a really horrible, red and golden tablecloth. It’s exactly the type of thing Nico should have expected to find in the Palace.
“Cool,” Nico says.
“What’s cool?”
Not this tablecloth. He doesn’t say that. “Not much.”
The Prince nods. “Alright.” He clears his throat.
There’s a long, awkward silence. Nico should deal better with awkward, really. That’s all conversations ever are with him. There are stilted words, long, stretching silences. He wishes the ground would open under him.
“How much longer do I have to stay?” Nico finally asks.
“Where?”
In this hellish hole. “Here. Now. In the tea-room, I mean.”
“We should go for a walk,” the Prince says.
“Not together, right?”
“Ah.”
“I mean, no offense, but this is frankly embarrassing,” Nico says. He leans forward in his seat. “I just really need a cigarette.”
“I’ve never smoked one.”
“I really hope you aren’t trying to get one of mine.”
“I was just trying to make conversation.”
And the Prince makes a strange kind of puppy eyes, which Nico has only ever seen Hazel make. And Percy, occasionally, but his just annoy Nico to an unbelievable level.
“So, what do you do in your free-time?” Nico blurts out, hoping to erase the Prince’s eyes.
“Oh, I study,” the Prince says. “I really enjoy reading, and learning in general. I particularly enjoy Philosophy, which I usually study on my own. I have tutors, of course. Although at the moment I am having some problems with Physics. I have also tried studying French a couple of years back, but I wasn’t really good at that. It was just so horrible.”
“Learning French sucks,” Nico concedes, thinking back to his own struggles with the language. “But not as much as learning Latin.”
“You know Latin?”
Nico shrugs. He shouldn’t have said that, should he? The Prince has already said that he doesn’t know much of his background, so maybe he also doesn’t know that Nico hasn’t always been a Six. Hell, he wasn’t even always called Niccolò Jackson.
“I know Ancient Greek.”
Nico nods. “Sounds fancy.” He doesn’t say that he knows that, too.
The Prince almost seems to be having problems controlling all his energy. His finger curl and uncurl around the armrests of the chair. His gaze shifts more than once to the windows and the gardens. When Nico follows his eyes, he doesn’t see anything, though.
A bell rings, startling the Prince out of his reverie.
“It seems that our time is up,” the Prince says.
The Prince stands, and Nico does the same, giving him an even-more-than-awkward nod, and turning to leave.
“It was really nice meeting you!” The Prince continues, when Nico’s hand is already on the doorknob.
Nico turns back, to give him a tight-lipped smile, catching the Prince empty the mug of tea out of the window. It startles a laugh out of him. The Prince turns, his eyes widened at having been caught in the act. His cheeks dust in red, and it only makes Nico laugh harder.
“So you aren’t poisoning yourself with thirty-five cups of tea, only the soil outside,” he says. “Good to know.”
“It’s considered polite to offer people tea,” the Prince replies smoothly.
Nico’s smile tightens. “Well, let me tell you, Your Highness, maybe the Twos, Threes, maybe even Fours or Fives, care about drinking tea and making small talk. Sixes and Sevens? We don’t really care whether you stuff yourself in tea and lemon cakes. Actually, most people from home would probably much rather you not waste so much food when everyone has already been served plentiful breakfast.” Nico makes a mocking wave with his hand. “With your gracious permission.”
He doesn’t slam the door behind himself, even if his cheeks are red and his ears ring. Sally should be proud of him, honestly.
Raw Fake Rankings, 11/2/2021
Men's singles division - babyfaces
Big E (WWE world champion)
Damian Priest (WWE United States champion)
Finn Balor
Kevin Owens
Keith Lee
Men's singles division - heels
Seth Rollins
Bobby Lashley
Apollo Crews
Austin Theory
Unranked: Jaxson Ryker, John Morrison, T-Bar, Veer
It's looking like the main direction for Raw is Big E vs. Seth Rollins, with a potential Kevin Owens heel turn on the horizon. (Owens may or may not leave WWE in January, so how he's presented over the next three months could be interesting.) It feels like the didn't get enough out of Big E vs. Bobby Lashley, but they could be saving that for the Royal Rumble or Wrestlemania.
Beyond that, I would expect at least one of the top tag teams to split in the next six months, which would put Randy Orton, AJ Styles, or possibly Rey Mysterio back into the world title hunt.
In the meantime, you'd think the lack of depth would give guys like Lee, Theory, Ryker, Morrison, T-Bar, and Veer a chance to heat up. But then you remember what company this is. It looks like Theory and Veer might get a little push but I'm feeling like they'll be in the 24/7 title squad before too long.
Men's tag team division - babyfaces
RK-Bro - Randy Orton & Matt Riddle (WWE Raw tag team champions)
The Street Profits - Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford
Rey Mysterio & Dominik Mysterio
Men's tag team division - heels
AJ Styles & Omos
Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode
Alpha Academy - Chad Gable & Otis
Shelton Benjamin & Cedric Alexander
Nearly every tag team switched shows in the draft, which seems like a big change until you realize it's mostly window dressing.
I assume the long-term plan is for one of these teams to take the title from Riddle & Orton, leading into a Riddle vs. Orton feud. But I don't get the feeling it makes a difference which team does it.
Women's singles division - babyfaces
Bianca Belair
Doudrop
Liv Morgan
Tamina
Dana Brooke
Women's singles division - heels
Becky Lynch (WWE Raw women's champion)
Well, at least Becky has plenty of opponents lined up until they realize the heel turn isn't working and quietly make her a face without explanation.
Women's tag team division - babyfaces
Nikki ASH & Rhea Ripley (WWE women's tag team champions)
Women's tag team division - heels
Zelina Vega & Carmella
I guess these two teams will feud for a couple of months. After that, who will WWE randomly throw together? I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Liv Morgan and Doudrop. I only need to predict one team because they would never think far enough ahead to set up two or three.
No TV matches in 30 days: Akira Tozawa, Commander Azeez, Drake Maverick, Karrion Kross, Mia Yim, Reggie (WWE 24/7 champion), R-Truth, Tegan Nox
I don't count the 24/7 title shenanigans as "matches" unless somebody successfully wins the title, so the usual gang of 24/7 guys (Reggie, Tozawa, R-Truth, and Maverick) are probably stuck here for a while. I could kinda see Karrion Kross running around chasing Reggie with his goofy helmet on, so that's something to look forward to.
Part-time/semi-retired: Edge, Goldberg
Inactive
Alexa Bliss (sinus surgery)
Asuka ("free agency")
Elias ("free agency")
Eva Marie ("free agency")
Gran Metalik ("free agency")
Lacey Evans (maternity leave/"free agency")
Lince Dorado ("free agency")
MVP (broken rib/"free agency")
Nia Jax (storyline injuries)
Slapjack/Shane Thorne ("free agency")
Titus O'Neil ("free agency")
The Miz (appearing on Dancing with the Stars)
I assume that Bliss, MVP, Jax, and Miz could all be back in action at any time. Evans just gave birth so I wouldn't expect her to return for at least 3-6 months.
The storyline of the draft is that everyone who didn't get picked is a "free agent" that can go wherever they want. Most of the undrafted names had been assigned to Raw, so I'm leaving them here until they show up again. Usually WWE does that too, with their official roster on their website. But in a new wrinkle, they've removed some of the free agents from the Raw and Smackdown rosters, to play into the storyline. So for example, Asuka is still listed as a "current superstar," but if you check to see which show she's on it'll seem like she just disappeared.
I'm curious to see how long WWE is willing to do this kind of thing before they all of the free agents return to some on-screen role. I'm sure many of these names will be back in time for the Royal Rumble or Wrestlemania. But Shane Thorne hasn't had a televised match in over six months, and he's exactly the kind of guy that would get left out of the mix for a whole year. I would not want to be one of these free agents if/when WWE does their 2022 roster cuts. (Unless I'm Gran Metalik, who reportedly wants out of his contract.)
I was a teenager when Switched At Birth first came out, and I loved the show. I’m twenty-three now, and I still love it, but also. . .wow, wow, wow, there’s an uncomfortable number of CANON relationships between adults and minors. To be clear, one would be bad enough, but we have:
Bay x Ty (started off when she was 15 and he was nineteen, then she was 17 and he was 21) Daphne x Jeff (16/17 and 30-something) Daphne x Jorge (17 and presumably late 20s)  Daphne x Campbell (17 and 21)  Bay x Tank (17 and 20-ish)
What the actual hell were the writers thinking? The relationships are bad enough, but what really upsets me is that almost none of them were frowned upon in the show; Jeff got punched in the face by Angelo, and it was well-deserved, but no one called the cops.
Watching Switched at Birth and really enjoying it (yes, I’m 33 and watching a drama about teenagers, don’t judge me)
Like, the scene where Daphne tells Angelo she needs him to learn to sign is just
I don’t think hearing people get how meaningful it is for family/friends of deaf/HOH people to learn ASL. Even just a bit goes a long way. My co-teachers (who are two of my closest friends) are learning and that’s HUGE, especially in a noisy classroom, and especially now that we’re in masks.
None of my other friends sign and neither does my family, and that’s a little hard, even though I’m “just” HOH. If we’re alone facing each other in a quiet area, I’m okay, but as soon as there’s public background noise or the TV or dishwasher, it’s a lot more difficult. Restaurants, shops, it’s hard. I’ve silently dropped out of conversations at dinners or group outings many times because I can’t follow everything.
Like last week, I was buying a new cell phone and my dad was with me, and I could barely get anything the salesman was saying. I felt embarrassed to keep asking my dad for clarification, and with masks/noise that would only help so much, so I wound up getting a phone that was $400 more than I originally thought because I couldn’t understand (the camera is amazing so I don’t regret it, but)
My point is that if he knew even some basic signs it would have been so much better for me but I know he’s not interested in learning. He doesn’t think it’s necessary since I’m not fully deaf.
I’m just kind of in my feels about this today but please, please, if you’re hearing and have family/friends who sign, just learn a little. Please.
We're coming up on a brother reunion real soon right? So can you do a Red Talk on John and Arthur's relationship?
I love me some Red Dead Brodemption, and I’m looking forward to the reunion, and how that shapes things after, as much as y’all.  I’m not certain what’ll happen so this should be fun.  As to when, I’m pretty sure it’ll happen by the end of Chapter XIII (Horseshoe Overlook II).  As usual, I’m kind of taking the story as it comes and letting it find its own flow, and forcing the reunion in earlier just didn’t feel right.
OK, so we have a few confirmed pieces: John is 10 years younger than Arthur (given 1863 and 1873 birthdates), that they found John in Illinois when he was 12, that Abigail joined in 1894 at age 17 (1877 birthdate), quickly got pregnant, and gave birth to Jack in 1895 (4 years old in 1899).  John tried to deny paternity and generally shunned the responsibility of being a father, and at some point between 1895 and 1899, also disappeared for a whole year.  Arthur is still incredibly pissed about this.
My meta is that John’s sudden adoption threw a 22-y-o Arthur into a panic.  He’s clearly always struggled with feeling insecure and worthless, and Dutch and Hosea suddenly fawning over this new boy, talking about educating him, making him one of the family, etc. means he’s failed.  He’s not lived up to what they needed him to be, and so they’re turning to someone who can replace him.  It’s not pretty that a grown, even if very young, man is threatened by a child, but given Arthur’s traumas and mental issues, it’s understandable.
So he started to act out.  Went chasing jobs, bringing in more money, to prove that a man, not a boy, was what Dutch needed.  That he was still worth his place.  Dutch loved it, of course, and probably took advantage of Arthur’s desperation and willingness to do about anything to prove himself.
That cost him his relationship with Mary as she saw he wasn’t moving further away from the gang like he’d promised, but sinking even further into criminal life.  I also HC that shortly after this, Arthur and Eliza had their lonely drunken hookup that resulted in Isaac.  So his life pretty much turned into a disaster for a few months there in 1885 because he was running around in a total panic.
He was likely kind of an asshole to John early on, because if you’re deathly afraid of being replaced by this kid, why would you be nice?  But being stuck together for the winter, they learned to get along.  Arthur saw that he wasn’t being kicked out.  John was the golden boy, the new favorite, and that wasn’t going to change.  Dutch and Hosea still valued him for what he could do.  He resigned himself to being the workhorse, and earning his place via his skills.  Plus Arthur being Arthur, he’s a soft touch, especially for kids and animals, and so he’d have seen more than a little of himself in this feral little gremlin.  I think he switched pretty quickly, once he made his peace with being somewhat replaced, to being John’s fiercest defender.
On John’s side, he initially hated Arthur a bit too, because a grown man picking on you when you’ve been let down and hurt by adults in your life already, cool.  Once things softened, and John started to settle in and soften his own trauma-based armor, he idolized Arthur.  This former illiterate street rat, just like John, who’d become this formidable man who seemingly could do everything, and do it well.  He had Dutch and Hosea’s absolute trust, rather than being an ignorant kid who couldn’t even read.  Everything John wanted to be, really.
So for a good while I think the two of them had a very close-knit relationship.  There was always something unequal about it, because John was a kid still, but they were brothers and would have done anything for each other.  As you get past 1890 and John turning 17 or so, things started to shift again.  Arthur would always be more capable, wiser, and older, but now John was becoming an adult himself.  They could start to relate a bit more as peers, and John in particular really craved that.  Arthur’s respect and praise was probably the one he wanted most, because it was so hard earned.
1890-1894 were probably promising years for their relationship.  Arthur lost Eliza and Isaac in 1890, and took that as a sign.  He quietly resigned himself to a life of nothing but the gang, and worked even harder.  John started to grow up.  Then the “Jackcident” happened, and things went to shit again.  Arthur had lost a family only a few years before, and he saw John making a similar mistake, but even worse--unlike Eliza who wouldn’t join the gang or marry Arthur, Abigail was right there.  John doing the right thing would cost him so little, but he refused.
Things deteriorated from there, and John hid his overwhelmed insecurities behind a slut-shamey “The kid’s probably not even mine”, and saw Arthur turn into a coldly judgmental asshole again about it.  What did Arthur know about this anyway?  He’d been chasing the same unattainable woman for years (or so John thought) who’d made it clear she wouldn’t have him.  But fine, if he couldn’t have Arthur’s respect, maybe it wasn’t worth having anyway, the judgmental prick.  If Arthur can’t forgive him when he’s this cold-hearted clay statue who doesn’t care to understand what love and relationships are like outside of storybooks, screw him.
As for Arthur, his inability to straight talk John about Eliza and Isaac meant he just turned frosty and angry, and it stayed that way.  Then John left, and it got even worse, because that meant John had betrayed the gang, betrayed his son and the woman who’d borne his child, and he’d also betrayed Arthur and all the affection he had for John, and the hopes that John would turn out better than him.
Arthur’s still pretty pissed about this and John returned at least a year prior to Chapter 1, so he is absolutely holding a grudge.  Plus John’s every bit as resentfully defensive about it as Arthur is frostily judgmental.  That to me speaks to them having to have had a really close relationship before John’s shunning his responsibilities to Jack and Abigail caused this rupture, because you honestly don’t react that strongly, or passive-aggressively, to someone you don’t give a shit about.  You tend to ignore them totally.
Chapter 4′s “Angelo Bronte, A Man Of Honor” (RIP Bronte glitch, I miss you) is really a huge turning point, and seems to show how things used to be between them.  John’s trying hard to relate to Arthur in that mission, admitting his failures as a father, admitting his fear for Jack.  Arthur responds readily to that admission of responsibility and concern, like he’s been waiting for exactly that all this time, because he has.  It ends with a moment of them returning to the awkward impasse they’ve been in for years, with John’s inability to even say to Arthur what it means to him that he helped rescue Jack beyond “Thank you”, after finally admitting his failures openly.  But then we return again to a glimpse of something brighter with Arthur’s quiet, “I understand...go be with your family.”  There’s a sense of much-needed forgiveness in that.
It starts really paying off in Chapter 6, because it’s finally there that we see the two of them able to stand there and talk to each other as grown men, like they never had a chance to do before.  Though there’s the interesting note to that whole thing that even as they’re relating as men, it also returns to where it began: Arthur giving so much of himself to protect and teach John, and John idolizing Arthur as the standard by which he measures himself (and all too often falls short.)
But there’s something left still unfinished there, because the relationship is still unbalanced.  It needs John to kick off Arthur’s boots he’s been trying so hard to wear all these years, so to speak, and finding his own that fit and becoming his own man, and Arthur being able to slip off the yoke of carrying so much weight for John while he continues to grow up.  So yeah, there’s some work left to accomplish in 1907.  ;)
Okay I’m reading through Porg’s update so some of y’all can save your braincells and here are some great highlights (under a readmore bc i couldn’t help but tear into a few things she suggested):
Flat out ignoring that Vergil had changed by the end of the game as a result of V and Urizen’s separate experiences.
In trying to make V and Urizen their own character, she throws out the idea of Vergil being manipulated by the Qliphoth/Urizen (??? somehow??? even though the tree is implied to be non-sentient i believe???), with V being a Devil hunter looking through the remains of Mallet Island (which was completely blown up, turned to rubble, and then swallowed by the sea, so... that can’t happen), finding the cane which makes him youthful and not sick but... having the cane makes it so he can only kill demons through the cane??? for some reason??? And he needs the Qliphoth fruit to heal himself and free him from the curse???
How did she make V’s backstory even more confusing and complicated how the fuck did she do that
Almost immediately after bringing up the cane, she instead changes it to be one of the rings he’s wearing because she wants her “precious V” to use weapons other than the cane, which makes all the prior paragraphs about the cane’s curse and only using it pointless. She’s the one writing this fic, why can’t she edit her own work so it’s more cohesive?
Despite saying that V should be a Devil Hunter, she doesn’t explain why someone who is supposed to be killing demons would form a pact with at least three to fight demons. Her rewrite dismisses Visions of V, and she even states later that the manga is a waste of time as it won’t ever be translated into English (which 1) is not a limiting factor to reading it as many people have translated it already and 2) doesn’t dismiss it’s value at building up V’s character, who she supposedly likes the best).
Also, for someone who complains about DMC5 being a rehash of DMC3, she’s sure doing her best to change it to a rehash of DMC1 (Vergil being controlled by an outside force, bringing back Mallet Island, bringing back Mundus [the cane is supposed to be tied to Mundus]).
V apparently can’t be human because she wants to give him a devil trigger, despite having 3 familiars and his own strength. Okay I guess?
Also it’s really fucking sick how she describes V changing, because it’s apparently V fusing with Nightmare? Devil May Cry has never been one for body horror but she straight up says she was inspired by “The Thing (1982), The Fly (1986), Bloodborne, and Resident Evil 7″ for the transformation imagery and I wanted to nope the fuck out of there real quick.
Her segments of actual fiction writing and dialogue are really bad it’s almost like a parody Youtube skit.
She switches between prose and script writing randomly, it’s really odd. She does it primarily with Dante i’ve noticed? Here’s an example I wrote of what she does:
“Hey, don’t stress out about it will you?” Says John following a few steps behind VINCENT: Don’t get your panties in a twist
And that just happens... randomly? Like, there’s no indication why she’s doing that it just happens.
She straight up writes notes in her fic about the controls for character actions in-game what the hell--
She also shamelessly puts in a link to artwork that clearly isn’t her’s (and I highly doubt she got permission to post about) to try and show what V’s Devil Trigger would look like. I couldn’t find it because I don’t know how pixiv works, but that’s just a shitty move, especially with how she treats artists on tumblr when they draw art of Vergil.
EDIT: Porg has now straight up copy-pasted the art into her fic without the artist’s permission which is, we all know, fucking theft. While it is good artistry, is just a weird mashup of Vergil’s and Dante’s. It’s not all that unique and I don’t understand why she had to reference a bunch of body horror shit when all the Devil Triggers in game are essentially just a large flash of light and a seamless transition between forms??? It’s good art, I’m not trying to bash the artist, but... Porg, you could’ve been a little more original here rather than just ripping off another artist’s designs...
Everyone in her fic acts super casually to seeing Vergil alive in the Qliphoth and it’s like... honey, no.
Vergil acts WILDLY out of character holy fuck. Like, I know I should have expected that but this is NOT how Vergil would act in the slightest. She’s pretty much writing an OC.
Building off of this: EVERYONE acts OOC and... it’s not exactly cringey, but it is perfect proof that Porg doesn’t know what she’s doing and hasn’t properly analyzed the characters.
Dante acts weirdly... detached? There’s no sign of him acting like his normal goofball-y self, and he’s much more serious than normal. He actually acts more like cannon Vergil than himself, actually. (He also knows CPR apparently? Which... is a skill he would really never bother learning, so...)
Nero doesn’t act nearly as emotional, and acts calmly for some reason. You can’t feel any of his emotions behind his dialogue, only through the adverbs added to the tags)
V is too informative. He knows way too much about random shit that... no one should rightfully know. I’ll mention it more later, but... V doesn’t act like himself and I don’t really know how to explain it.
Vergil is essentially her OC. Seriously--he’s not as brooding or snarky, he’s far too open and apologetic, there’s practically no sense of rivalry between him and Dante. Weirdly, he acts more like canon V than fic!V does, despite the fact that Porg wants to establish V and Vergil and separate characters. His actions also make no sense when put alongside his canon personality. We aren’t reading anything about Vergil, we’re reading about Porg’s weirdly idealized version of him.
I’m going to make a break in the post here because I feel like this is the part that needs the most attention:
Porg goes OUT OF HER WAY to dedicate a GIANT portion of this chapter to her own OC: Nero’s mom. There are several long paragraphs of establishing the relationship between her OC and Vergil, talking about leaving Fortuna, how they were ‘happy’ and then saying that after a hurricane (inspired by hurricane hugo, you’ll see later) she got separated from Vergil, never reconnected with him, GAVE BIRTH, died from a demon attack with Nero staying near her corpse, and then Nero was found by humans and taken off the mainland to be taken to an orphanage on Fortuna. She wanted a massive amount of time to be taken out of the fun parts of playing Devil May Cry to establish a relationship that would never come back and essentially turn into a 15 minute soap opera inserted into a game about having fun killing demons.
Alright back to the noted highlights.
Porg confirms in her fic that the universe of Devil May Cry happens in the US, and that Fortuna is an island along the southeast coast and I want to fucking rip my eyeballs out at this point.
The ONLY REASON why she is doing this is because she lives in Florida. I know she does, and she just wants to imply that this is all happening near her home turf. How anyone who lives in Florida thinks an island like Fortuna can exist is beyond me though, because playing through 4, most of the buildings are inspired by Italian designs, and no one in the states would build an entire island with italian designs. I’ve been to Florida multiple times--there’s no buildings there even REMOTELY designed to match Fortuna.
EDIT: I have been informed that Porg actually lives in Pennsylvania, not Florida, which makes both more and less sense. Why Florida? Why not a hidden island up on the east coast? Why does this have to be taking place in the states at all Porg???
Yeah, let’s take Nero off the MAINLAND OF FLORIDA after a DEVASTATING HURRICANE and send him to an orphanage on an ISLAND which would’ve been hit the hardest by ANY hurricane. TOTAL SENSE.
She tries to make her own timeline for the series using actual real world dates and events and it’s terrible (she references Hurricane Hugo in 1989, and confidently states that 3 took place in 1990, despite all evidence for the actual dates of events being fan theory established through circumstantial evidence).
There’s so much horror movie inspiration here--not cheap horror, but really twisted shit that... doesn’t fit with Devil May Cry’s tone at all? In the slightest? She references Jacob’s Ladder, plus all the other body horror media I wrote above.
Straight up just tears Vergil’s arm off which sure, I guess we gotta make THAT a parallel between Nero and Vergil. They can have a father son moment over being physically maimed.
In the scene immediately before this, Urizen picks up Vergil by the head and roots around Vergil’s memories (somehow???) to show him all the ‘bad moments’ in his life to traumatize him. She describes it as the audience getting flashes of him falling to hell, charging Mundus, being Nelo Angelo, etc.
This causes Vergil to cry and beg for Urizen to stop. Then Urizen rips off his arm. So. Yeah. Another point for the OOC!Vergil/OC-taking-Vergil’s-place board.
Also this point ALONE made me realize that Porg does not know how much time, effort, and money needs to be put into making assets. Like, the entire fic she was stressing that everything be done in 5′s HD Graphics--including the ruins of Mallet Island, so I have to assume she’d want these little snippets in HD too, which would be a massive money hole creating these assets for one scene that lasts maybe ten seconds total.
I know I stated it in one of my earlier posts, but most of what she’s writing would fit better with a sequel for the reboot series, not DMC5. It would make her OOC writing of Vergil make sense, all the horror movie inspiration and body horror shit would fit better there, especially all the crappy dialogue too.
She somehow made Griffon even MORE annoying than in cannon.
BTW if I had to listen to poetry while fighting the final boss of a video game, I’d sooner turn my PS4 off. Not that poetry isn’t cool and all, but it cheapens the final fight and distracts you. It wouldn’t work.
EDIT: I realized this point made no sense without context, sorry. Porg made the Book of Urizen (the poetry book by William Blake referenced multiple times by V) either weirdly prophetic or made it out like Blake had inner knowledge of demon powers or... something along those lines, and V magically has the knowledge that reciting poetry from the book about Urizen will... harm him? Weaken him? Open a gate to hell (she mentions a portal appearing near him)? It’s very unclear, but she essentially rewrites Urizen as the final boss, and makes it three stages (V [Griffon recites some verses, which is what the first point was about], Vergil and Dante [this is where Vergil gets his arm ripped off btw], and then Nero) with all three of them reading poetry from the book to deal the “final blow” to Urizen. I’d much rather have Vergil be the final boss than have to go through a three-stage boss fight while every character I play as recites poetry to kill the boss.
She mentions Dante using Sin DT against Urizen but I’m pretty sure with her fuckery of the game’s events Dante can’t GET Sin DT? Because there’s no fight between Nero and Urizen where he’d intervene?
COMPLETELY IGNORES VERGIL’S DEVELOPMENT OF WANTING TO TRAVEL WITH HIS BROTHER THROUGH HELL TO ELIMINATE THE QLIPHOTH FUCK OFF.
Also she changed the lore of the Qliphoth so that it sprouts semi-naturally around every 500 or so years? So... shouldn’t leaving the Qliphoth roots be fine now? Since it’s natural?
Nico acts like growing back arms is totally normal
Wrote an INCREDIBLY shoe-horned in moment in the van with Dante filling Trish and Lady in about finding Vergil and everything that happened where, once again, Trish and Lady act almost completely nonplussed that Vergil is alive after 20+ years in hell, with about 9 of those ten years being trapped under Mundus’ control and corrupted by the Demon King
Seriously why is no one surprised in this fic that Vergil survived? Dante has a brief moment before finding him, but everyone finds out and accepts it like flipping a switch (once again--ESPECIALLY DANTE, which is NOT how the grieving process works)
Porg states that the ending is trash because the twins are fighting in hell, but completely ignores that most of Dante and Vergil’s lives have been built on conflict and they like fighting demons, especially Dante. Both of them were happy and doing what they love.
She also completely ignores through this entire thing that Dante was really fucking depressed in the novels leading up to 5 but hey I don’t even know if she can read.
I can vaguely agree that Trish and Lady were sidelined and they should’ve had a bigger role. However, I can’t fault the directors for not doing this, because they were already developing three playable characters with their own unique fighting styles. She writes all this shit about the story, writes notes about controls and mission layouts, but forgets that it takes a lot more than pressing a single button to code a game.
She just doesn’t know what she’s talking about. Seriously, none of these things are cohesive or edited properly, and despite her saying she wanted better for Vergil, or Nero, or Dante, or V, she writes all of them incredibly out of character and doing illogical actions. I just... I don’t get it.
The best part is--I can’t even tell her about these things, or give constructive criticism. She moderates the comments on her fic and isn’t afraid to delete anything she doesn’t agree with or can’t make a ‘passionate rant’ about.
ALIAS: Warrior
POWERS / SKILLSET:                                                                                     Forcefield Manipulation: Dane can create, shape, and manipulate force-fields, a field of energy without mass that acts as a matter/wall, so that objects affected by the particular force relating to the field are unable to pass through the field and reach the other side. This power, however, is currently limited to him as the strength of these fields depend on intense skill, power, and concentration, all of which Dane requires significant improvement on.
In theory, the fields may block or deflect certain forces/materials while allowing others to pass, such as air and light - the little experience he's had making them have shown that he requires practice on allowing air through these fields. Strong and/or repetitive impacts may be able to disrupt or destroy these forcefields, as can causing Dane to lose his concentration, and they can currently only defend against the explicitly physical.
The fields also demand great mental strain and energy uptake to maintain, so Dane must ensure he's in excellent shape and mindset when creating them else he runs the risk of passing out.
   [ RESTRICTED ]  Demigod Physiology, Type II: As a mortal-God hybrid, Dane was born from the union of a divine being and a mortal, inheriting his power from his magical, divine parent. Demigods may gain powers associated with their divine parent's domain, or a domain of their own, or just powers generic to divine beings.
However, those unaware of or unwilling to accept their divine nature may sometimes, over a period of time, experience extreme fever, migraines, and body pains, with the potential for seizures or even death as a result of their spirit struggling to manifest itself. Notably, if realized too soon, one may go into shock and experience these symptoms as well.
Potential abilities may include decelerated aging, enhanced condition such as agility, durability, strength, speed, and senses, as well as a regenerative healing factor and sometimes flight. After a demigod truly and completely comes into their divinity, these abilities may increase to extraordinary supernatural levels. Due to his magical origins, he can also resist many forms of magical manipulation
COLORS: Black, gold, sometimes navy blue or red
APPEARANCE:  Handsome and tall, Dane provides a striking figure to most, and he knows it. He typically dresses casually and in low tones, alternating between t-shirts, shorts, and sneakers to jackets, jeans, and boots. He doesn’t necessarily have a superhero outfit, seeing as he’s brand new to the Advocates, but he does own a long sleeved, black, lightly armored shirt with some gold lining that he pairs with similarly colored leather gloves, athletic pants with greaves, and combat boots. Aesthetic-wise, he’s always been a fan of red, navy blue, black, and gold. Striking colors, but if used well can be calming and familiar, even soothing. He likes that aspect.
WEAKNESSES:            When not protected by his forcefields, Dane may be vulnerable to any attack that may harm a regular person.  Overexertion of his physique will render him exhausted and in need of rest.Telepathic or other mental-based attacks may also be effective against him, and as a younger, less experienced fighter, he may also fall prey to psychological manipulation.
 [ RESTRICTED ]  Dane himself, while not invulnerable, may be highly resistant to great amounts of concussive force, extreme temperatures, and some forms of radiation and energy attacks. However, edged weapons or projectiles applied with sufficient force are able to pierce his skin. While his body may be naturally resistant to most poisons, powerful enough toxins may render him incapacitated. Lastly, he is likely also vulnerable to powers or abilities that are solely capable of harming divine beings, such as divine power negation.
In honor of the beer plague that's keeping us homebound and my own procrastination, here are my observations of the entire run of the teen soap Switched At Birth, for which I hung on way too long to traditional cable to finish watching
I definitely would not have known that Bay and April Nardini were played by the same actress if I hadn't been informed beforehand
Bay's style game was really on point, but in the early seasons I believe they went way too far in having her dress to the nines in every single circumstance
Daphne was supposed to be the all American girl we were supposed to relate to, but that girl was....so dumb. Especially about boys. I spent most of the series wanting to drop her down a ravine, especially after Bay took the fall for her vandalism.
I honestly think the show did well with Simone and that she and Emmett were much more mature and apologetic about their cheating than I've seen in other teen shows, especially Gilmore Girls. I didn't really like how her drinking problem was dropped, but I did like in the end how she was a little taken aback by Toby's son but came around to it and the incident wasn't used to make her a bad person
Bay and Emmett....god, what a pair of drama queens. Seriously. I do not buy that Travis was a better match for her as they had no chemistry and seemed very brother/sister like until the end of the show and she was lying to him about spending most of her time with Emmett. They also seemed to have nothing in common. I don't think she and Emmett were well suited for each other at the end of the series because he still had a lot of mental health issues but I don't see her and Travis lasting, either. I also didn't like how at the end Bay talked about Emmett being her "first love" as if they wouldn't stay in touch. I'm just going to pretend that she and Travis split up amicably and she and Emmett got back together later.
Marlee Matlin probably relished the chance to play someone more complex than the saintly deaf person that shows up for one guest episode but man, could Melody get on my nerves. I wish they had followed through on the adoption storyline with her and her cute ginger hubby at the end instead of saddling them with fostering one if the show's most detestable characters
I missed Angelo after he was gone, but I feel like all of the other characters compensated for how individually melodramatic they could be to make up for killing him off
The parental situation between all three kids went back and forth constantly....half the time it seemed that the Kennishes had three kids and Regina was off in her own world (sometimes with Angelo, sometimes not) and the other half that Daphne and Regina were totally seperate from the other family. I never felt that Bay ever really connected with her biological parents, though. At the most, Regina became like a close family friend/aunt figure to her.
There were a lot of characters that disappeared that I really wondered about...Noah, the kid who was going deaf that got between Bay and Daphne? Just disappeared. Regina's mom? I've read that she was written out because she went back to Puerto Rico, but I swear they never said anything, she was just gone.
The whole thing with Toby and Nikki's forced marriage even after they sleep together was just odd and an indication that TV writers shouldn't try to write about people with traditional belief systems if they don't understand them. The same goes for John's political career...look, it's the Midwest, not Brooklyn, a Republican state senator is not some sort of exotic creature that no one can wrap their heads around.
That said, Joey Lauren Adams as Nikki's mom kind of threw me for a loop. I know the 90s were years ago and she's definitely old enough but I just couldn't get over it.
Toby and Lily were a roller coaster and I did not like her personally....at all. I think they definitely had input from both sides of the abortion argument bevause the kind of things argued and the way Toby approached the situation definitely seemed familiar to me. That said, Daphne and Bay both needed to lay the hell off (especially Bay) and the way Lily was totally excluded from the conversations that Toby was having definitely bothered me. I honestly would have liked to meet Lily's family, too.
The situation with Bay and Tank....I definitely did not see things the way the show wanted me to see them. I also feel really bad for the actor playing Tank that they threw this plot twist in. That's all I'm going to say. They also randomly turned Bess Armstrong's character into a villain for no apparent reason.
The show's final truncated season...what a mess. I understand that it got shortened while they were in the middle of filming, but Daphne cutting short her medical career (which she already was struggling in) to live with Bay in China for a year after all that Bay sacrificed so that she could have it? Also, we take a lot of time out for the BSU storyline to focus on side characters which would have made sense in a 22 episode season but feels off when they have to wrap everything up in 10 episodes. Emmett shows up in about 3 episodes and I don't think we ever got closure or peace on his problems. Toby's career issues are not resolved satisfactorily at all. And don't even talk to me about Regina dumping her hawt younger BF so that she raise the kid her ex kidnapped until he gets out of jail.
But Daphne ended up with Mingo, and as he was much better than all of her other boyfriends, I guess I'll have to imagine that she stops being as dump as a box of hair (OTOH, she does intentionally piss off someone with connections in her chosen career...even if he was a bigoted jerk, that wasn't a great idea. So no. She still dumb).
PROFILE: GRIFF / PT1 / TIMELINE.
griff’s full name is griffith angelo d’aquino, and he was born on october 25th, in bangor, maine (but grew up in brooklyn, new york). he is italian-american, 4th generation; his great-grandfather converted to roman catholicism from judaism. the d’aquinos are still catholic.
his middle name is in honor of his paternal grandfather, who died two days before his birth.
griff believes in God, and still makes time occasionally to go to mass, but believes wholeheartedly he is going to hell.
the d’aquinos are a small-time crime family, primarily focused on bank & truck robberies. there are seven d’aquino children, with griff being the youngest; the other six are hugo (58), giorgia and emily (twins, 53), mia (49), lucas (47), and sebastian (44). griff’s father, sebastian sr., operated a crew with his two eldest brothers; when hugo turned 18, he was invited to work alongside them, a tradition that continued as every kid became of-age. in crime circles they grew notorious for their success, but rarely shared that success with non-family; if you were invited to work on a job with the d’aquinos, you had to be good. when griff’s father was involved in an accident and had to have his leg amputated as a result, hugo, 26, took over as the mastermind of the operations; his uncles had no objections, as hugo had proven himself time and time again that he was capable of such a responsibility. though he was young, he was ruthless and efficient, and soon overshadowed his father by growing more bold and ambitious.
hugo's ambition was incredibly lucrative, and luck was on their side: no d'aquino, or anyone who joined in on their jobs, was ever arrested or injured.
griff partook in the family business for three years before pursuing a short-lived career as a boxer. in high school, griff had been drawn to theatre; he was a literature nerd, and had an affinity for shakespeare. he indulged in this briefly, before an off-handed comment from lucas about how “gay” it was made him retreat. self-conscious and fearful that he’d out himself by continuing to entertain an interest in it, he switched gears and forced himself into more traditionally “masculine” hobbies -- he wrestled during his senior year, became invested in body-building and boxing and learning different styles of self-defense. this was useful for the work, of course, but eventually he saw it as an escape; it wasn’t that he didn’t enjoy the work he did with his family, because he did -- and he was good at it -- but he just wanted to be away from them. and being the youngest, with little responsibility and minimal expectations, it was easy to trade out robbery for boxing when he decided to pursue it. he stuck mostly to underground circuits, but had a few more “professional” matches near the end of his career.
it was through a family friend who was helping out with a job that griff learned of the private military company he worked for between the ages of 21 and 28; it was during this time in his life that he met jason villalobos. their relationship was fast-formed and aided in shaping griff into who he is today; quite a bit of griff’s presentation, his style and aesthetic, is leftover from the mark jason had on his life. they had a brief but intense romantic relationship that ended abruptly after jason sustained permanent damage to his hand following an injury earned while he was protecting griff. they did not see each other again until meeting by-chance in atlanta, when they both ended up working for doc.
after leaving the pmc he had been affiliated with, griff fell back into working with his family, but as he was still processing and attempting to cope with the things he’d discovered about himself during his stint as a merc, it was a swift reunion. after a year he left his family again and took a small vacation to europe, where he met a man from an english-based syndicate who offered him work carrying out contract kills; it was good work for a merc like him, and it took him to places he’d always wanted to see, anyway. this lasted for about four years, but griff eventually tired of it, and migrated back to new york.
in new york, he found himself arrested within 3 months of his return to US soil, and he was jailed for three years on second-degree aggravated assault. miraculously, he has no priors on record, save for an altercation as a teenager -- but speculation about his family’s history and current activity was high, though there was no proof of their crimes, and as a result, the judge gave him five years. he attempted to connect griff to old and new cases, looking for any scrap of evidence; he offered to free griff immediately if he rolled on his family. law enforcement had been attempting to get one of them for years, but beyond hearsay, there was never an opening -- griff was their first real shot at getting to the truth, but of course, he never said a word. he kept to himself in prison, refusing various protection offers; not affiliating himself with anyone inside; eventually, griff was released early on good behavior, because his family’s lawyer accused the judge of mishandling the case based on slander, essentially threatening his career if he didn’t let griff out early.
griff was 36 when he was released, and chose to go west. he hadn’t spoken to his family since he was jailed, despite his sibling’s efforts to see him, write him letters; he was feeling angry, not because of anything they’d done, but because of mistakes that were haunting him, guilt that was eating at him. he chose not to see them even after everything they’d done with providing him with a lawyer because of the shame and anger that had been accumulating for years -- so he went west in hopes of finding something to keep his minds and hand occupied. he alternated between working with west-coast crews and keeping himself isolated; he was suffering heavily from depression, but didn’t know this, because he just refused to believe that anything like that could be wrong with him. for some months at the age of 39 he took up some fishing jobs off of the coast of canada, but found it to be unfulfilling, so he went south.
one year in mexico, doing nothing in particular; nothing criminal, no violence. there was a small attempt at romance here, a man he met in a bar who seemed entranced with him, but griff didn't allow himself to really feel it; they shared a few brief kisses but griff could tell they weren't alike -- he was normal, no blood-stained hands, and griff felt too guilty about it, like he'd taint him if he pursued it further, so he ended it.
then at 40, he met an old contact in texas who told him about some work in atlanta. the kind of shit you’d do with your family, he was told, and griff found that he missed the simplicity of that. it was thrilling but it was easy and he was good at it, and he hardly ever had to bloody his hands, because most people just complied -- that would be a nice change. so he made his way to atlanta, and for a year he worked with an associate of doc to prove his merit before doc would hire him outright; but at 42, finally he met doc, and finally got to see first-hand if the rumors about the kid who drove for him were true.
Wait how tf does the AU work for Preyas?? Like, is he becoming human or is Angelo/Diabolo becoming human? Both? Do the latter get separate bodies or only one with two personalities?
can't believe the au was obliterated by preyas' giving birth smh/j
i mean, i can imagine angelo and diablo don't become human so marucho has someone to fight w and so the combo moves can still work, otherwise it'd be odd to have three people use (1) bakugan lmao
so ig only preyas is affected by the switch bc he's marucho's guardian bakugan
Fun Facts about Switched at Birth.
1. Bay and Emmett became so unhealthy for a while.
2. Tank keeps popping up and it makes me sick, though he started out as a good guy, he just also always rubbed me the wrong way ya know?
3. Toby is an awesome father.
4. Sign Lang. is cool as fuck.
5. Bay and Travis def did not get enough air time. I wanted to see way more of them in China than I did anything in KC. They seemed so happy!! (Not that they're not)
6. Travis is like...the greatest boyfriend. Not the perfect, because he def did and said some things that were crazy, Bay said it was the best sex ever and he asked if it was better than Emmett. Oops. Also he punches people (but that's due to some other issues).
7. Toby and Lilly are a pretty healthy couple. Like they have their arguments, but always figure if out in the end. And toby is always supportive of her choices. And I like that it isn't right away like with baptizing Carlton. He, being neither here nor there about it in the first place, listened to her and her reasons for wanting Carlton to be Jewish, and supported it. Recognizing that at Gramma and Grampa Ks house xmas and Easter were a thing, but not at theirs.
8) also, despite the age diff, Luca was probably Regina's healthiest relationship. Like, I love love love Angelo, but at first they were crazy with each other, too many secrets, and even though they eventually got healthy, they werent the whole time. Eric was her most passionate "one that got away" and though that wasnt unhealthy, it wasnt particularly healthy either, Luca was consistantly good for her.
9) Mingo and Daphne. Like....just...why break them up, yes, she went to China for a year. And they broke up at the start of the summer, and that's fine. But when she came back, he said he had a g/f who we never even saw one time, that scene where he drunk kisses her, and shes all "you have a girlfriend", they could've written it as a lie, and that he lied to her because he didnt think she was into him anymore because their lack of texting over the 10 mos, and that he didnt want her to think he was just sitting around pining after her, even though he def was, they could've done that, because even though hes wild, he was so good for her, she made him want to be better, and he made her believe in herself, and he learned sign for her, like she said, no boyfriend had learned sign for her before. Yall he learned her literal language.
Theres so many great things about this show, but its underrated because it was on ABC family making the storylines corny, even though they're important.
