The other night I read your headcanon about Sanji being an enjoyer of romantic novels. And I thought: what if he had to experience something akin to a romantic fairytale in real life?

So I had this epiphany. What if, after Usopp unsuccessfully confesses to Sanji, who politely rejects him 'cause he's an idiot [affectionate] still struggling with his internalized homophobia, Sanji is forced to face his own feelings when Usopp falls under a spell [falling asleep and never waking up] that only someone who loves him wholeheartedly [and romantically] can break?

Like, imagine this being set right after the Water 7/Enies Lobby arc. THE ABSOLUTE ANGST! THE DRAMA! THE TEARS!! THE CHAOS!!!

This would be such emotional torture for Sanji. He'd have the worst time of his life and he'd feel so so guilty about it. And I absolutely adore it. Everything about this is just perfect.

Sanji rejects Usopp because of so many reasons. Internalized homophobia. Not feeling worthy of his love (because it's pre-ts and he doesn't know anything about his past and Sanji is still tormented by it). Thinking, once again, that Usopp deserves better than him. Thinking loving a man (his best friend, specifically) is wrong and would ruin their whole relationship. Etc etc etc. Usopp feels like shit, to put it in simple words, but accepts the rejection anyway with a bittersweet smile and just says he perhaps will need a little bit of time away from Sanji to deal with it, if that's okay. Sanji says it's fine but it's not, because it's happening exactly what he didn't want: Losing Usopp. Because he's a coward and he can't accept his feelings or Usopp's in any way. At least not yet. At least not without any help.

And I don't really know how this would go. Maybe it's a devil fruit user. Maybe it's something about the island they're at. Maybe it's a magical flower or something, because OP loves doing these things with evil flowers, apparently. But Usopp faints and doesn't seem to wake up. Robin asks for information about it around the island and turns out that, yes, he needs a true love kiss to wake up. Everyone keeps saying it can't be real, because what the hell, it's exactly like a fairytale. But it is real, and Sanji thinks the universe hates him. Nobody knows about them (they definitely know about them. It's just a topic they haven't explicitly touched verbally. At least not yet. I think the ones who know, know are Zoro and Nami. Robin too, of course) so the first thing that comes to Luffy and the other's minds is "okay, we could do this if Kaya was here. Because with how much this guy talks about her, she could be the one waking him up". But there's no time (because let's say that he'll never wake up again if ummm 5 days pass without any kiss) and they know, deep inside, that it won't work. At least a few of them know. Luffy says he could just kiss him himself because he loves Usopp! But Nami says it's not that way. It has to be romantic love. Luffy gets all frustrated and angry about it, I'm sure. It's just not fair. He wonders how that could've happened.

Sanji knows it's his fault. He knows he should fix this.

He knows he loves Usopp. Deeply. Desperately. He needs him in his life and wants him romantically. As best friends, too. In any way. But there's this layer of insecurity-- Maybe they're not meant to be together. Maybe the kiss doesn't work. Maybe he doesn't love Usopp as much as he thinks or maybe it's not in that way and he's just confused (he's always telling himself it's just a phase he's going through for not having a girlfriend yet). Maybe Usopp doesn't love him that much, either. Maybe he's the one confused (because how could he love somebody like Sanji?). So Sanji scared. Sanji is scared Usopp might not wake up. He's scared of what others might think. He's scared of what could happen if he does wake up and they have to talk things out. Yadda yadda.

But Nami confronts him because she knows about them. She asks him to do it. To stop being such a coward when Usopp's life is at risk. And it's pretty much the first time he ever tells no to Nami, refusing to do anything. The helplessness he feels is painful, but thinking about Usopp never waking up is even worse. Two days go by. He never leaves Usopp's side. Nami is growing impatient and Zoro looks at him with true hatred this time. Robin is the one to talk to him next, gently reminding him that nobody is going to judge him. That he can be free to do whatever he wants. That is better to take risks than living with regrets. But Sanji doesn't do anything but thank her. He needs time. But Usopp is running out of it. And then, on the fifth day. Well, fourth day at night, almost the fifth. Then, Zoro talks to him. Sanji is not okay. He has barely eaten. He won't leave Usopp's side. He's acting overly romantic for somebody who can't bear to use the word 'love' to refer to Usopp yet. And Zoro is done. After arguing for a while, Zoro tells him to stop being such a fucking coward and grow some balls and kiss Usopp so he doesn't die on them because, apparently, he's the only one who can save them this time even if Zoro despises the idea. And Sanji goes "But what if I can't?!"

Zoro: What are you talking about? Of course you can. Just go and kiss him. Sanji: No. It- It doesn't work like that. Zoro: To me it looks like it does. Sanji: What if it's not enough? What if I'm not enough? What if it's not- It's not right. For me to like him. I shouldn't, so- What if we're not meant to be and he dies and it's my fault? Zoro: It is going to be your fault either way if you don't try. Sanji: Pfft. Not like you've tried either- Zoro: Because we're smart enough to know we aren't the ones in love with this idiot. You're, quite literally, the only one who doesn't see it. Sanji: What the hell do you know? It's not- Zoro: It is like that. Sanji: I can't do it. Zoro: You won't know unless you try. And I don't give a single fuck whether you can do it or not. I don't care if you want to or not. If he dies because you were too full of yourself to stop being a coward, I will slice you open. Sanji: I'll let you. Zoro: Yeah, no. I know. But I won't give you the satisfaction of following Usopp if he dies. You'll have to live with it. Sanji: What if he doesn't wake up? Zoro: Could you stop being so damn selfish for a second and think about him?! Sanji: I am thinking about him! He's the only thing I can think about right now! Do you think this is easy for me- Zoro: Then stop torturing yourself and Usopp and start acting like you give a fuck about him dying instead of drowning in self-pity. It's ridiculous. Sanji: Fuck you. Zoro: One thing we know is that he'll never wake up if you don't try. And he won't be dying by the hands of some fucking spell, but yours. So do whatever you want, but stop blaming a future you don't know and at least admit you're too much of a coward to face your feelings.

So Sanji realizes, then, that it doesn't matter what he wants, but what Usopp needs. It doesn't matter if he's afraid. He would do anything for Usopp, even facing his fears. He will never know unless he tries, right? He hates that it's mosshead the one to put the idea in his head, but he has to thank him for that. He really did need that.

Long story short, he kisses Usopp. Nobody is around when it happens, but he does. It's painfully slow because he doesn't want to look. He doesn't want to face reality yet. When he finally moves away, though, Usopp isn't opening his eyes. He isn't moving yet. He has this moment, thinking he was right all along and he couldn't do anything to save him.

Until Usopp quickly wakes up from the coma. He asks what happened. Where he is. He says he just had the most annoying dream about one of Sanji's fights with Zoro. Then he says he's hungry, too, for some reason? Like he's been sleeping for days. And Sanji doesn't have time to tell him the truth because he goes to hug him tight. Usopp is still... Having a hard time processing the rejection, so it's a bit uncomfortable. Besides, he doesn't understand this sudden act of affection. But then, Sanji goes "I'm so glad you're okay, idiot. Never do that to me again. Never scare me like that again. I'm so sorry. I should've- And I didn't- I- It's all my fault" / "Wait, what? What are you talking about? Sanji?" / "I- I like you. I- No. More than that. I just- I want you" / "Yesterday you told me-" / "That actually was pretty much a week ago" / "What???" / "But it doesn't matter. Forget that" / "What do you mean a week ago? How long have I been-" / "I can't say it now. I know I can't say it now. And I am sorry, but- But I- I'll stop being a coward. For you, I will do it. Anything. I need you, so, please. Don't ever believe I don't want you back" / "But you said-" / "I was scared. And I am an idiot. And I almost let you die-" / "You almost wHAT?" / "And it's selfish and I am a shitty person for this but will you wait? Until I'm ready to say it? I like you. So much. More than you could ever believe. And I know I need you here. And I know I... You mean everything to me. Is that enough for now?" / "Moron. Of course it is. You could've said so sooner, you know?" / "I know. I'm sorry" / "Now that the fact that you love me and want me and need me yadda yadda has been established... What the fuck do you mean by you almost letting me die?"

And it's, uh- A really funny story to tell that Usopp will forever remember. But Sanji owes him a kiss. A real one now. And Sanji can't deny his sleeping beauty such a petition.

Sanji and Usopp get together first. They are very lovey dovey and sappy because Sanji is lovey dovey and sappy and Usopp loves it, gets very swept away with it, and does his best to reciprocate. This shit is practically the bane of Zoro's existence. And that's not even getting into the pet names.

Some time later, he's got the realization that oh, huh, he likes Usopp. And oh, ugh, he likes the Cook too. And he might lament his own feelings about it, but eventually he tells them and then Zoro has two boyfriends.

And then one morning, Usopp comes to breakfast looking incredibly sleepy, and casually gives a "Morning, babe" to Zoro before taking his seat.

And Zoro finds he likes that. He really really likes it. And he's definitely showing it on his face somehow because soon after Sanji is ranting and raving about Zoro being an absolute hypocrite, because how dare he complain all this time about Sanji and Usopp calling each other honey and cher and darling, when he was just as bad as them-

Usopp is more awake now and trying not to laugh, for Zoro's sake. Zoro is very red and keeps trying to interrupt Sanji, but Sanji just talks louder over him. Zoro would start a fight, but Sanji hadn't finished serving breakfast yet and his arms are full of plates so he's forced to suffer.

These two fights were really about the same thing. Buggy and Usopp paralleling each other in their emotional attachment and inability to let go of the old, safe and comfortable thing they believed in.

For Usopp, it was Merry who’d sailed with them since the beginning of the journey. For Buggy, it was Captain Roger’s dreams and the title of Pirate King. When it comes to these fights, these two represent the same thing.

Obviously it was the right thing for Luffy to give up on Merry. He was prioritizing his crew, and he was doing this because of how he cared for his friends and for Usopp. He couldn’t protect their dreams if he couldn’t do this. But Usopp wanted Luffy to hold onto this shared heartfelt wish. Shanks probably had his own reasons too for giving up on Roger’s dream.

Shanks and Luffy were both trying to prioritize the future of their crew, rather than hang onto their personal attachments. But Buggy and Usopp couldn’t just toss aside their selfish desires.

Being able to set aside their own hurt for someone else’s sake is one of Shanks’ and Luffy’s shared behaviors. Shanks did this with Uta, leaving her behind to give her a better future when it hurt him to do so. Luffy did this with Tama, letting her act out and not telling her he knew Ace even though he mourned Ace more than anyone.

It’s about growing up, taking on the adult responsibility and letting go of your own personal satisfaction. It’s like when a person gives up their favorite childhood toy to somewhere better.

If you think about it, Buggy’s like a version of Usopp if he left the StrawHats at Water 7. Only Buggy didn’t get a redemption arc and a chance to reconcile with his friend.

In my personal opinion, I think Buggy was an experienced pirate at this point and understood that a crew where the crew members don’t respect the Captain can’t work. So the best thing to do when a clashing of ideals occurs is to go separate ways. They’ve already discussed this too, about their differences and how they should sail separately because of it.

Hey! First of all let me start by saying that I LOVE your writing (one shots? Im not familiar with fanfic terms lol), everytime I see you answering an ask and is under read more? Fuck yeah! Im eating well tonight!!! (That being said dont feel obligated to answer this like that lol)

I was just thinking about Water 7 (because us Usopp girlies/gender neutral/ are never leaving that arc down) and the fact that after getting beat up Usopp is shown to have bandages all over his body, but later when he heals he doesnt seem to have any scars, and in the sense of the show it makes sense, but 👀 i feel theres lots of angst potential for him to have some scarring from his time against the Franky Family, after all Chopper only treated him at first, the rest of the wounds care was done by Usopp. I feel theres great Usopp angst potential in seeing these scars as shameful because they keep reminding him of his actions in water 7, Franky angst because every time he sees those scars he remembers a beat up Usopp, hell angst for the whole crew remembering their darkest time as a crew

And if we want to make it ZoLuSanUso (because of course were going to!!) angst of their little breakup arc and how they couldnt protect usopp at that moment 😭

Aaah I’m so happy you enjoy my writing! I honestly hadn’t planned on writing anything for this fandom because whenever I enter a new fandom I prefer posting art and even though I enjoy writing a little here and there much like my art/fandom art in general they are just snippets of a larger story lol. Which is something you can get away with drawing but not writing. I wish I could write a full fledged slowburn for the ot4 god that would be the dream but executing something like that well is a lot of work and I’m weak of spirit I’m afraid😩 that being said I did write a little something inspired by my latest ot4 drawing(and isn’t that a beautiful circle being inspired to draw and being inspired to write by your own drawing as you draw lol) I just need to edit it and I’ll post it tomorrow(and yeah they’re called oneshots😊) just seeing your nice message inspired me to work on it some more so that’s why it took me a bit to answer(also it takes me longer to see asks because I have notifications turned off lol)

And ah water 7 best arc and anyone who says otherwise is just weak. The first and only time we saw interpersonal conflict that mattered where everyone was so wrong and also right. Sorta wishing we get the same level intercrew conflict in elbaf but with the way the story is going it’s not likely but I can dream. anyways water 7. God the thought of them already dating during that arc is so angsty even for Me. While lu/sopp and san/uso sides are already heartbreaking on their own (and lu/san! he literally kicked him in the face and told him to watch his mouth😭 honestly I don’t think Sanji would forgiven Luffy or Zoro if Usopp really left the crew there’s no way for things to be normal after all that or even Usopp for going through with it tbh) but ugh just zo/sopp is so much worse. Just having to hear him say that they should leave him if he doesn’t apologize even though Usopp wasn’t the only one at fault no you know what even if he was entirely at fault hearing that would not be okay. To hear someone you love say that would be heartbreaking😭. From then on you even after you patch things up you would be constantly watching yourself trying not to be too much trouble or make any mistakes. I have fallen down a ravenous hole I need to get UP. So yeah I don’t like to think about them dating before w7 because it all becomes a little too terrible and I would just die but I shall indulge you just a bit.

But yeah Luffy waking up sweats in the middle to make sure Usopp’s still there. Zoro would be just be touching Usopp and finding all these scars that never used to be there and get a bad taste in his mouth. I think if Sanji hears any of the other two raise their voice he’ll just have flashbacks and go into protective mode even though they are his boyfriends too and he’s supposed to also love them and he can’t have favorites but there’s no way to erase the past and what happened. So Sanji will just feel that much more terrible and unworthy (he never used to feel deserving before but now it’s just compounded three fold). Water 7 has left a lot of scars.

They may not all be physical but they’re so much worse. They’re going to be forever hunted by past mistakes of how they almost lost him because they were stupid and not there when he needed them most and as a result they’re going to overcompensate and become overprotective which just leads to Usopp feeling even more useless. It’s a vicious cycle until something finally gives and they have another fight where all their stupid insecurities come to light and they mend things. They try to be better moving forward but they’re just humans and there’s no way they can just fix things overnight. But they try and that’s all that matters.

I don’t think Franky will ever forget what happened and what he had to someone that has become so precious to him. And the fact that Usopp forgave him so easily just makes it so much worse. It’s easier to deal with anger because then you can at least apologize and work to earn their forgiveness. But no he does not get that. Instead he has to see the person he hurt look up to him and admire him and love him which just makes all the shitty things he did so much worse. And to have left permanent scarring because of what he has done oh boy. To have a constant reminder of just how terrible you can be. Yeah he won’t ever forget it. And no amount of good he does will ever erase those scars so how could he possibly forgive himself.

anyways....... i love the idea of reiju being best friends with usopp, she doesn't rly get to be herself around her siblings so she can just sneak into the lab and let herself relax around usopp who doesn't judge or expect anything from her. She slowly stops being afraid of her brothers and starts to take sanji's side more often, and usopp steps in too,, more yelling at them from behind reiju but u get the point LOL (he has immunity from being an "important asset" to the Doctor,,, )

more about sanji's germafication! it's basically what happened at wano when he used the raid suit, since he's now considered suitable to go on missions he's given the raid suit along with his siblings and turning into stealth black over and over again is slowly draining him of his emotions and memories. basically a reprogramming !! usopp doesn't know that he's contributing to it by working in the lab on maintenance and the pills HAHA

why's usopp working at the lab in the first place?? the Doctor's kind of sick of having to interact with "incompetent" clones and wanted a lil helper with emotion, a mind of his own, and creativity. he still expects usopp to be obedient but in reality he's trying to create a clone who has usopp's mind but with a stronger body... thus sogeking is born! (i haven't read Whole Cake in a while, and i never really watched it, so bear with me)

I'd love to write a fic with Usopp on Whole Cake. it'd be sooo fucking long and i'd need to refresh myself on the entire arc, but god i'd probably be so satisfied when it's done. specifically for having brought a single moment in my head to life, but we'll get to that.

On Zou, he insists to be taken along on the Sanji rescue team and has worked himself up with a whole bunch of very good reasons as to why he should go there instead of helping in Wano, but of course Luffy just immediately accepts with a "yeah sure"

With Whole Cake, I think he'd be flipping between having fun as part of the idiot trio/quartet (Luffy, Chopper, Carrot), and being terrified with Nami. There wouldn't be that many differences in the arc as a whole, though; some things would be easier/better and some things would be worse- I don't necessarily think Usopp's presence would be overall an advantage or disadvantage, just different. Like, major events would stay mostly the same, but little details would change and maybe those little details would build to a far more drastic change-

for example, maybe one of Big Mom's kids considers themself a great sniper and wants a match with Usopp, or is motivated to work harder because Usopp is around and they want to take him out and boast about it. Maybe it means Sunny takes more damage than canon, or maybe Usopp's help means less damage to Sunny. (idk if i'd really do smth like this, but it's just an example)

I do know that, despite his penchant for talking and rambling, I'd probably have Usopp be dead silent after his initial shock when Sanji fights Luffy. Everything about that is the same, except Usopp is just watching Sanji the whole time- not panicking, not moving, and not speaking. He doesn't say a word the entire time, doesn't even make a sound, and that, along with Luffy's words and Nami's begging, stick with Sanji.

(Usopp is thinking of his own fight with Luffy in Water 7, he's partially wondering if this was what it was like- if it was this painful to watch from the sidelines- and partially knowing he doesn't have to say a word, because he knew, like he knew back then, that it didn't matter what was said. It wasn't quite the same, but he could tell in the way Sanji moved, in the way he spoke and held himself, that he was putting on a front, trying to be brave in all the wrong ways. Usopp didn't say a word to Sanji because there was nothing he could say that Sanji himself didn't already know. Should've known. And his quiet, direct stare, was more than enough.)

the singular moment i really wanna write, is a scene where Sanji is apologizing for dragging them into his mess- either during the big meeting in Bege's castle or some other time- and Usopp's like "I'll do what you can't, you do what I can't, right?" and Sanji pauses, a little confused, until he remembers Enies Lobby and a stupid mask and cape and-

and tears are gathering in his eyes now, fuck, but he laughs a little. It sounds wet and his face is itchy and they're surrounded by tentative allies, but he- he laughs again and he says, "Fuck, you remembered that?"

Usopp shrugs, a little smile on his face. "They were some wise words from a wise man."

Sanji laughs a third time. "You think I'm wise?"

And they banter a little more before Bege tells them to quit it since they're on a time constraint or something. Quietly, Usopp will ask, "It-it helps. On bad days. And I figured, 'what's a worse day than this?' Ah, not that you getting married would ever be bad per se-"

"Usopp," Sanji says, looking more relaxed and settled. He smiles fondly and grabs his friend in a one armed hug, crushing him to his side. "Thanks."

And yeah, don't remember much beyond that, except the whole "hiding and then busting out of the cake" bit, which would mean Usopp in a cute little tuxedo or smth- maybe with a fedora aaaaaa <- loves fedoras- helping out with the fighting and eventually sailing with everyone to Wano.

He would be so distressed about fixing up Sunny now that the whole thing with Whole Cake is over. Maybe there'd be a gag about him promising Franky to take good care of Sunny while they were gone and being confident, after being Franky's tinkering partner and learning from him over time, that he could handle minor repair work much better than he did the first time around with Merry. And so when he finally takes in all the very-not-minor repairs he has to do, he's certain Franky is gonna strangle him for not keeping his promise. Probably also try to write in some nostalgic 'repairman Usopp' vibes from pre-Water 7.

Also something something, Sanji, wanting to do more for the crew bc he still feels guilty about Whole Cake, decides to take it upon himself to help Usopp not fall into a whole anxiety spiral about the ship. In turn, Usopp ends up helping Sanji not feel so guilty- usually by handing his own words back to him on a silver platter. And, yknow, having the two of them bonding and being buddies again like they so rarely get to be in canon nowadays qwq
