Memory Defrag | TRACK 5 - Data Corpulence | Azekawa Kinari's Ward Mayor Novel Translation
Warnings and Disclaimers:
This translation is not professionally done and is not proofread. Edits and clean-ups may come at a later date.
Not a 1:1 translation either and some liberties into localization were taken into account.
This novel will contain spoilers for the Ev3ns Main Story: "Chained Up Scarlet".
Appropriate Content and Trigger Warnings will be added if needed.
May be used for quotebots/masterlists etc.
I am not fluent and self-studying Japanese (albeit at turtle speed), this was translated by ear and with the help of a JP dictionary, so please feel free to point out any errors!
—/—/—/—/—/—
I came out of semi-conscious mode and awakened all at once.
By my bedside, there was a plastic water bottle, with a note stuck to it: “Are you thirsty? Here, if you don’t mind.” in Raito’s handwriting.
As I am an android, my mouth does not get dry, yet I drank from the bottle anyway.
The room’s interior has been plunged into azure-hued darkness.
I could hear the flapping of the nocturnal birds resting in the trees behind me.
———[At the very least, you could say what’s on your mind in your own words.]
Father’s words repeated several times within my auditory system.
Whenever I recall these words, I start to feel something, slowly.
It’s something that I’ve not been able to properly verbalize.
But now, I’m searching for a meaning within Father’s words, of which I had previously felt nothing upon hearing them.
“Were his intentions similar to Master’s own words?”
I threw my question into the void.
I suppose that the true nature of Father’s hopes for me, was similar to Master’s own desire to treat me as if I were a fellow human being.
What Father wanted at the time was not for me to be in a state to channel Kinari’s spirit, but for me to speak out using my own words.
Rather than words that have been programmed into me, he must have wished to hear my words from the heart.
As I thought, I still deeply regret that I could not do that even at his deathbed.
Yes, there’s some sort of feeling of regret. Likely so. Surely, I thought.
And this sort of emotion is quite surprising in itself.
Because, as an android, I feel an emotion called ‘regret’.
But looking back on this incident and understanding how I felt while reviewing those memories, perhaps someday I too will gain those 21 grams.
By analyzing, considering, and reflecting……
As Kuguri has previously said, these records can turn themselves into memories.
[Further verification is still required.]
For that purpose, any and all records shall be preserved without being deleted.
I thought about it for when I have the free time to browse these past data bit by bit, but a message box appeared hovering over my retinas.
[The additional information related to the emotion base is building data corpulence at this time. Would you like to delete those additional parts?]
This newly acquired data is a highly valuable resource that is connected to 21 grams, therefore it cannot be deleted. I selected [No].
[The screen glitches for a moment.]
The moment that I’ve made my choice, the image reflected in my retinas became distorted and a noise appeared.
“...?”
I checked on my systems to see if a small error had occurred, but there was no problem.
Right now, I cannot afford to shrink down on my memory any further.
The everydays that would increase from here forward would be also valuable pieces of samples.
With that in mind, I laid down on my bed.

“Today’s a whole extra super awesome ‘nother lesson day~! After finishing with warm ups, we’re doing formation checks, alrightyyyy?”
Chihiro’s cheerful voice resounded throughout the lesson room this morning.
He always took the initiative whenever it came to practicing.
As always, I put out the tablet and started to record our dance formation———
—But he appeared troubled almost immediately.
“Oh whoopsies! My hard disk is full already~ I can’t record anymore.”
“Isn’t that a large capacity tablet? Why’s there so much data…? Plus, didn’t you say the same thing last month?”
Tao rushed in to check quickly. Chihiro pouted, cheeks puffed up, I’m an influencer, aren’t I? Don’t tell me you forgot?!”, he retorted.
These two always have this kind of conversation all the time.
“Hahaha, well yeah, your job’s to take pics and all that. So I guess my smartphone…
Ah, right… I dropped it in the bath yesterday and it broke.”
“Haaaaa. It’s like, soooo unbelievable that such a high-key moronic guy exists in this world!”
Raito made an offer to do it on his behalf, but then was quickly rejected.
Kuguri gave Raito the stink-eye, as he had no intention of ever lending his own device.
“Welp, there’s no choice then. Kinyari~ can Chii twouble you to do it?”
“Understood.”
In the past eras, humans have used their eyes as a camera when photographic equipment cannot be used. Their video recordings would be burned onto their retina, be available as an output and viewed on another device.
I began to film our dance routine while looking into the mirror.
“Tao, stop. Your hand placement is off by three centimeters.”
“Tao, stop. Your arms are not fully extended.”
“Tao, stop. You mustn’t do this move from your chest, but from your shoulders.”
I added detailed annotations about our mistakes, and by the time I finished them, Chihiro would hug me and say, “Luuuuv ya, Kinyari!”
Chihiro does this more often than not. He also happily rested his cheek by my hair.
“Ahhh, you smell so nice, Kinyari~ Haaaa, you’re just the bestest, the cutest, I loooove you~”
“Mm. Thank you.”
“Oi, Chihiro, quit messin’ around already. Keep doing that and it’d count as sexual harassment.”
“But if it’s me and Kinyari, we make a super mega cute picture together, so it’s a-okay!”
“Eh… That so?”
Tao warned him, but Chihiro bit back.
He seemed a bit distressed after listening to Chihiro’s absurd reasoning.
Raito laughed softly as usual, saying, “I’m glad that we all get along so well.”
On the other hand, Kuguri interjected, “Nyushi, if I were to join in as well, wouldn’t it be even prettier?”
This sort of interaction between us unit members had now become the norm.
Chihiro often talked about me so lovingly, yet according to Tao, “Ain’t it because Chihiro used to be an idol otaku and likes cute things?”
Can this kind of love be classified as something that fulfills my father’s hopes and wishes that [Someone who loves you will surely appear]?
I don’t know it yet, but I have long since accepted this circumstance.
“Man, at the end of the day, I was still the one who made the most mistakes again.”
“Tao, you’d be training on your own again today, wouldn’t you? I’ll join as well so let’s do our best together.”[4]
“By the way, Kinari. I accidentally let it slip that you slept longer than usual this morning to Ushio. He seemed quite worried so if you could, please show yourself to him later to let him know.”
“Plüss, won’t you at least punish this wretch of a man for saying something so unnecessary?”
Chihiro and Tao started to whisper amongst themselves about everyday this and that, while Raito and Kuguri, who were wiping away their sweat, also chatted for a little while.
I’d say, “Shall we proceed to play and observe the formation video I took on my camera on another device now?”, all four of them, Kuguri—to an extent, would watch somewhat seriously.
Thus, our discussion on how we could further improve it would then begin.
I, for once, would like to repeat this moment an innumerable amount of times.
……The thought of it was not at all unpleasant.
“Please give it your all in singing, dancing, your idol activities and live happily!”
This is my firstmost and top priority order I needed to fulfill. It is my very core of being.
My most important standard of behavior.
However, rather than having to meet that standard, little by little, the desire to fulfill it instead is being born.
What to call this sort of ‘emotion’, I don’t know it yet.
But, I can feel it. I know so.
Emotions that I cannot name yet will continue to grow within my heart.
Surely. Probably. Maybe.
Someday, even…
———is what I thought.

Translation Notes:
1 - This chapter’s title name was very… difficult to word, as 肥大 in particular could be any of the words related to gaining weight/fat. In accordance with this, I used the word corpulence instead to achieve the same meaning across.
2 - Took liberties with Chihiro’s gyaru-speak. Also yes he did say all of that part (I have screenshot receipts).
3 - Again, Tao did actually say that. Quite literally in fact too!
4 - I don’t know who said that, but basing off the prose that followed, it seems to be Chihiro? I’m not sure if he’s ever called him anything other than Taotao so please correct me if I’m wrong here!

Oh yeah that makes sense, I didn't even consider that part about Apollo being an unreliable narrator and demigods having a different way of interacting in friendships. It still hurts my heart a little though bc I LOVE Apollo 😭 and I'm glad you like answering asks about toa bc I have a lot of thoughts :)) I saw a spoiler about the ending of the last book where will and Nico are about to go on their quest to Tartarus and Apollo says he can't help them with that, what are your thoughts on that? It made me :/ a bit bc an Apollo who loves his children and who knows what it's like to be a mortal and how difficult it is for demigods should not be so casual about hi own son going off to literal hell and then saying he can't help ... It seems ooc to me. What do you think?
OH ANON. WELCOME TO THE CLUB.
Literally every ToA fan thinks Apollo just letting Nico and Will fuck off to Tartarus is ooc and stupid.
I totally understand how the solangelo book needed to work on its own to give Will and Nico the chance to shine, but it truly makes no sense for them to inform Apollo of their plan without Apollo at the very least attempting to convince them to leave it alone!!
The solangelo book could have simply worked on the premise that neither Apollo nor Hades know anything about Nico and Will’s plan. The moment Rick Riordan canonically confirmed that Apollo is AWARE of his sunshine son wanting to jump to Hell, it becomes soo OOC of him to not care or intervene😭
And the part about Apollo being like “i just don’t want to tell demigods what to do <3” DUDE WHAT THE HELL, it’s your literal job as a parental figure to tell demigods what to do (=advice them and guide them). I just… don’t get it.
Personally, I like to consider that scene a simple narrative device with no bearing on the rest of the story: Rick needed to tease the solangelo book + Apollo was the only narrator available + adults notoriously can’t help in kids’ books because that would make the kids NOT the protagonists anymore = “I know of Will and Nico’s plan but I can’t help ah-ah”.
When you’re done with the books, I recommend you to read Eclipse by @tsarinatorment if you want to see an alternative ending where Apollo doesn’t just shrug and say “well, whatever🧍🏻♀️” when Will tells him of Tartarus.
I (thesungod on Ao3) also have a couple of fics brushing the Tartarus topic post ToA (technically, one of them is still not online because it’s being written but it’s almost done eheh), and there are so many fics about Apollo generally being a good dad post-canon you can find browsing the tag, if you’ll be in the mood for some more content when you’re done with the books. I know I definitely was😅.
If Rick Riordan doesn’t give us what we want, we’ll just make it ourselves🤪.
With that said, I’m happy you love Apollo and I’m always here to answer more ToA questions and give my opinions because ToA is the book series of my life <33
Enjoy the rest of the series <3

SPOILER ALERT!!
A date from CN server which hasn’t been released on EN server yet. Might contains some spoiler.
🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁 🍁
Exclusive Radio
Xu Mo: A Ming, be more concise when submitting reports in the future. Your ability to refine key points needs to be strengthened.
A Ming: Yes, I understand.
Xu Mo: I'm not in the institute next week and will go to another place.
Xu Mo: If you have anything, you can talk to me over the phone.
Xu Mo: Do you have any other questions?
A Ming: Professor, isn't it... from the media who wanted to interview you again?
A Ming: Recently, there have been more reporters outside the Institute, and they all want to interview you about the Kolavo Prize.
A Ming: Even I feel a little troubled
A Ming: Fortunately, you have chosen this period of time for vacation, which is indeed a good thing.
Xu Mo: Not because of this reason.
Xu Mo: I just think that some time ago, I always seemed to be busy with work. Now is the time to give myself a vacation.
A Ming: Do you just want to take a vacation?
Xu Mo: Do you need other reasons?
A Ming: No, no, I just feel a little surprised.
A Ming: After all, from last year until now, professor has almost never been out of the institute except for normal vacations.
A Ming: I feel like you're all focused on work...
Xu Mo: Maybe it is a bit too immersive.
Xu Mo: So this holiday, I want to spend more time with people around me.
A Ming: Oh, I understand why the professor went to another place for vacation.
A Ming: Don't worry! I will never disturb you! Happy vacation, professor!
Xu Mo: You are now very good at refining the point.
A Ming: Hehe...
Xu Mo: Well, it's a date.
🍁
MIND'S QUEST
The traditional style hotel room is warm and dry.
I changed into a yukata, sat on the tatami, took a deep breath, nervously opened the news that popped up on the phone one-
"The announcement of the Kolavo Prize list has been postponed. Can the genius scientist Xu Mo set the record for the youngest winner?"
The bold and enlarged headlines are very eye-catching.
Postponed? I froze for a moment, and hurriedly clicked on the details to quickly browse.
"... Today, the authoritative awards in the scientific community, the winners of the Kolavo Life Science Award, are about to be announced, which has attracted great attention at home and abroad."
"The innovative work done by the scientist Professor Xu Mo in the field of brain science has therefore become the most popular candidate for the award."
"However, according to relevant sources, the selection criteria for
this year's awards have changed compared with previous years, and it is not ruled out that there will be more powerful competitors."
"The Kolavo Prize official also announced just now. Because of the big differences within the jury, the winner list will be postponed to the afternoon..."
I slid the screen, frowning tighter and tighter. Because I was so focused, I didn't even notice that someone was coming towards me.
??: Why are you still watching these news?
Xu Mo said that he put the blanket in his hand on my lap, and his eyes scanned my phone screen.
Xu Mo: A certain someone invited and told me to take vacation and relax....
Xu Mo: But from the way here to now, you have always stared at your phone from time to time.
He paused, with a little dissatisfaction and grievance in his tone.
Xu Mo: Is Professor Xu in this news more attractive to you than Professor Xu in front of you?
I was stunned for a moment and hurriedly turned off the news interface.
MC: Of course not! I just saw this news and clicked in.
MC: And... I mainly watch the weather forecast.
My eyes wide open, try to make your words more convincing.
MC: You see, the snow is so heavy today, the hotel owner also suggested that we can go to the outdoor hot spring again tomorrow.
MC: However, according to the weather forecast, the snow will decrease later. So maybe there is still a chance!
Xu Mo pondered for a moment, laughed faintly, and nodded.
Xu Mo: Well, it seems I misunderstood. It turns out that you have fully considered it
MC: Of course. It is rare that we all have vacation, but I am looking forward to this trip.
This is indeed the truth.
Lately, Xu Mo and I were so busy that we sometimes didn't even have time to have a meal together.
So this time I chose a hot spring hotel specially, just want to stay in the room with him and spend this time peacefully.
I raised my head, took Xu Mo's hand, and shook it lightly.
MC: You have been busy with scientific research some time ago, and you didn't have much time to rest.
MC: Leave the travel arrangements to me this time, you just need to relax and enjoy.
Xu Mo: Alright.
Xu Mo curled his lips slightly. The thin sunlight from outside the house fell on him, coating him with a soft light.
Xu Mo: Then... I'll leave it to you?
MC: Hm! Leave it to me.
I glanced at the time on my phone, my heart moved, and then I gathered my mind and raised my head and said to Xu Mo.
MC: Now that the luggage has been put away, go and change your clothes!
Xu Mo nodded and walked towards the door. I took the opportunity to secretly pick up the phone, intending to continue reading the news that I just turned off.
Xu Mo: By the way, there is one more thing.
MC: Wh- What?
Unexpectedly, Xu Mo suddenly turned around, and I quickly hid the phone behind me with a guilty conscience.
Xu Mo's eyes flicked back and forth between the phone and me. He seemed to have something to say, but he just chuckled.
Xu Mo: Nothing, just want to tell you...
Xu Mo: This trip with you, I also look forward to it very much.
While Xu Mo was changing clothes, I quietly walked outside the door. As I planned, a waiter came here on time with a rectangular wooden box.
Waiter: Miss MC, the lady boss asked me to give you this. Please keep it.
Waiter: As for the other item you ordered, because it needs to be made right now, the snow is too big for the driver to drive down the mountain to get it. Please forgive me.
MC: It’s okay, you've work hard, so please tell my thanks to the boss.
I took the wooden box in her hand and returned to the room, with a burst of complicated emotions in my heart.
This is a gift I prepared before I set off. Originally, I had calculated the time and planned to give Xu Mo a surprise when the results of the Kolavo Prize came out.
But I did not expect that due to changes in the selection criteria, the announcement of the award list was delayed, which disrupted my original plan.
I looked at the wooden box in my hand, and a result I had rarely imagined before popped up in my head, just in case...
The heart sank little by little. It seems that it is still unknown whether this celebration can be conveyed to him...
Xu Mo: What are you thinking?
I followed the sound and felt a little startled.
Xu Mo was wearing a dark yukata with a large collarbone exposed under the loose collar.
He relaxed, leaning against the door frame, and he looked a little more casual and relax.
His eyes fell on the wooden box in my hand, showing some curiosity.
Xu Mo: What is this?
MC: Well, this is...
Just as I was thinking about how to explain to him, a ringtone interrupted our conversation.
Xu Mo: ....Yes?
Xu Mo: ....Hello?
Xu Mo's tone was light, but his expression was a little more serious. The news that I just saw on my phone flashed in my mind, I couldn't help feeling a burst of tension in my heart.
Xu Mo: I'm sorry, I'm on vacation, I'm afraid I don't have time for this.
Xu Mo: Next time you have the opportunity to cooperate again.
After he said this lightly, he hung up the phone. I was caught off guard by the crisp and clean action.
Perhaps seeing me looking at him in confusion, Xu Mo said first without waiting for me to speak.
Xu Mo: It's the call from Huanqiu Weekly.
I opened my eyes slightly.
Huanqiu Weekly is an established weekly magazine in China. It mainly reports on international issues and major events. All have great influence within the scope.
MC: Do they want to cooperate with you?
Xu Mo: Well, they want to give me an interview.
MC: Really?! Isn't that great!
Hearing news that I was not worried about, I couldn't help but let go, and placed the wooden box on the closet next to it.
MC: Such an influential weekly magazine, if you accept their invitation, you can let more people know about your research results.
Xu Mo was stunned for a moment, and the corners of his lips curled upwards.
Xu Mo: Why do you want more people to know?
MC: Because...maybe for many people, your scientific research results are just a bunch of technical terms that seem very obscure.
MC: But I know, a lot of your hard work has been condensed behind it.
MC: Even with the aura of a "genius scientist" above your head, your effort and persistence are no less than anyone else.
As I spoke, the moments that I had experienced with him flashed in my mind.
He will put the experimental reports that have spent months of energy into the shredder one by one just because of a certain data error;
Because I finally got the desired result, I was so happy that I could not hide it, and even some childishly suggested that I wanted to go to a movie with him to celebrate.
I smiled at Xu Mo and said to him in a joking tone.
MC: So, I want to be rewarded for your efforts. This is probably my selfish intention.
Xu Mo looked at me quietly, and a certain soft emotion melted in his eyes bit by bit. After a while, he suddenly chuckled helplessly.
Xu Mo: Silly.
He stretched out his hand and took me into his arms.
Xu Mo: I declined the invitation.
MC: Huh? Why?
Xu Mo did not answer, but chuckled lightly.
Xu Mo: Do you want to know what my selfishness is?
Xu Mo: Although you always tease me about my time and energy as if I can't use it up, in fact they are also limited.
Xu Mo: I have to stay and spend them on the person who are most important to me.
He paused, rubbing the top of my hair with his chin.
Xu Mo: This is our vacation, of course I just want to share it with you.
My heart seemed to be hit by something. Feeling his familiar body temperature, I only feel that the slightest warmth suddenly enters my heart.
I couldn't help but put my hand around Xu Mo's back, eagerly trying to get closer to him and let this moment stay longer.
MC: Yes, me too.
Looking across the wooden box on the cabinet, I closed my eyes and gradually made a decision in my heart.
🍁
MC: Xu Mo, the belt of your yukata seems a little loose
I saw that Xu Mo had a loose belt around his waist, so I subconsciously reached out to help him tidy it.
MC: This seems doesn’t work...
MC: Let me tie a knot for you again!
After speaking, I undid Xu Mo's belt again, planning to tie it again.
Xu Mo: It seems that you are already very skilled.
Xu Mo's voice with a smile rang in my ears.
I raised my head and met his gaze. Only then did I realize how close we are now.
MC: W-well, when the waiter helped me wear it, I learned a little bit from her.
MC: Moreover, the way that girls wear yukata is more complicated than the boys.
MC: So it's not very difficult to tie your belt.
I lowered my head, trying to hide my blushing cheeks.
Xu Mo: It turned out to be so.
Xu Mo nodded, then opened his arms and let me put his cloth.
Although I tried my best to concentrate on the movements in my hands, the sniffles on my neck still made me a little distracted.
The delicate atmosphere filled us, I pursed my lips, and when I was about to say something, Xu Mo spoke first.
Xu Mo: I didn't notice just now that there are still a few lines written on the hanging paintings here.
MC: Eh?
I looked up and followed his gaze to the wall behind me, where there were traditional paintings one by one.
The red leaves all over the sky fell on the clear spring water, like flames burning in clusters, smeared with warmth and warmth.
I didn't pay much attention when I entered the room before, but now I look closer and realize that there are still words written on it.
Just when I was about to identify it carefully, Xu Mo had already read it out softly.
Xu Mo: " The long-lasting God is acting on behalf you, and I never heard of it"
(“悠悠神代事,黯黯不曾闻” Yōuyōu shéndài sh, àn àn bùcéng wén)
Xu Mo: " The maple dyed the Long Tian River, gurgling and flowing deep"
(“枫染龙田川,潺潺流水深 ” fēng rǎn lóng tiánchuān, chánchán liúshuǐ shēn)
Notes: I put the original sentence of the poem, afraid that there’s mistranslation since I’m not familiar with it.
MC: I seem to have read these sentences before...
MC: It seems to come from a very famous love song?
I turned my face and looked at Xu Mo with a questioning look. He nodded lightly.
Xu Mo: Well, it is indeed a very emotional sentence.
Xu Mo: I think it is probably because Valentine's Day is approaching. In order to set off the atmosphere, the proprietress of the hotel arranged such a hanging picture in the room.
Xu Mo: And look at the writing above, it should have been added not long ago.
Hearing Xu Mo's explanation, I looked at the hanging painting again.
MC: I didn’t expect the proprietress of this hotel to be so careful, I thought it was just a landscape painting.
MC: It turns out that there is such a “careful” chance hidden.
I tried to felt the emotions contained in the lines. This painting, which was originally used for decoration, seems to have a deeper meaning because of this poem.
Just as my attention was all attracted by the hanging paintings, Xu Mo's voice suddenly rang in my ears.
Xu Mo: Although the painting is really beautiful
Xu Mo: But, have you forgotten something?
His gaze fell on the belt in my hand, and I followed along and realized that I was still finishing Xu Mo's yukata.
His yukata was hanging loosely on his body at this time, and it was even more exposed. The low neckline is wider, and the skin is exposed.
The heat on my face couldn't help but rise a little more.
MC: .. I will continue!
After finally suppressing the fast heartbeat and refastening Xu Mo's belt, I couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief.
I raised my hand to help him straighten the low neckline, but found that this yukata was actually designed like this.
MC: Is this, this neckline originally opened so wide?
Hearing my visibly smaller voice, Xu Mo first glanced at his clothes, then a clear smile spread across his mouth.
Xu Mo: Well, that's it when I put it on.
Xu Mo: Moreover, as far as I know, the men's yukatas offered by this store are all of this style.
MC: Strange, I saw that the model wears on the official website before...
MC: Is this also what "Valentine's Day Special Offer"?
In order to cover up my inner fluctuations, I deliberately said in a ridiculous tone, and Xu Mo also chuckled cooperatively.
Xu Mo: Well, it is possible.
He blinked, as if thinking of something, then bent down and leaned in my ear and said softly.
Xu Mo: I guess..
Xu Mo: This is probably, a little bit “careful”.
🍁
On the tatami, Xu Mo and I are sitting opposite each other.
He took the sake out of the wooden box, opened the cork, and slowly poured it into a special vessel.
Xu Mo: No wonder today I saw you and the hotel owner whispered a few secretly...
Xu Mo: Why do you suddenly want to give me a gift?
My heart moved slightly, but on the surface, I still took the stubbornly.
MC: It's not a sudden intention, this is part of the arrangement of this vacation.
MC: Take it as a reward for Professor Xu who worked hard this year!
Wanting to get around this topic as soon as possible, I pointed to the Sake bottle and looked at him invitingly.
MC: I heard that this brand of sake is well-known locally.
MC: I was worried that it was too popular, but I asked the proprietress to order it from the Sake store half a month in advance!
A smile filled Xu Mo's narrow eyes.
Xu Mo: In order to live up to your intentions, I have to taste it.
After speaking, he picked up the Sake glass and took a sip.
MC: How?
Xu Mo: It has a slight sweet taste and is delicious.
MC: That's good! A drink in the snow can warm your body.
Suddenly, my mind flashed through the scenes of Xu Mo drinking before and couldn't help but add.
And its degree is not high. You can rest assured that you won't get drunk if you drink in moderation.
Xu Mo raised his eyebrows.
Xu Mo: It seems that I have been underestimated.
He seemed to inadvertently pour some more Sake into the glass, and then drank the whole glass leisurely.
Xu Mo: I have been tried sake before, but I was not drunk.
MC: I remember I heard you mentioned it on the phone.
Hearing him mention it again, a sense of curiosity arose in my heart.
In my impression, Xu Mo almost never drinks alcohol, but prefers tea.
MC: Why did you suddenly want to drink?
Xu Mo: Well... let me think about it.
Xu Mo put down his Sake glass, propped his head with one hand, and looked up at the red leaves in the courtyard behind me.
Xu Mo: It was when I was studying. In order to celebrate the project with the classmates.
MC: Huh?
Xu Mo: Feeling surprised?
Xu Mo's eyes overlapped with me for a moment, and then he continued.
Xu Mo: At that time, I cooperated with my classmates on a very challenging scientific research project. After about a year and a half of research, I finally got the ideal result.
Perhaps thinking of the scene at that time, Xu Mo sighed softly.
Xu Mo: They were so happy that they had to take me to the tavern to celebrate...
Xu Mo said helplessly, but the corners of his mouth curled up unconsciously.
I rarely seem to see him celebrating his achievements, and the temporarily suppressed thought in my heart is revivedㅡ
I also want to accompany him to celebrate and witness the moment when his efforts bear fruit.
Chaotic emotions spread across my chest: anticipation, tension, and a little anxiety...
Xu Mo: Wandering again.
Xu Mo tapped my forehead. I recovered, and smiled apologetically at Xu Mo.
He narrowed his eyes slightly, and after looking at me for a while, he suddenly spoke.
Xu Mo: I suddenly remembered that they also taught me a game at that time.
MC: What game?
Xu Mo: I will show it to you.
I watched with interest as Xu Mo picked up an empty cup and put it upside down on the table.
Xu Mo: The game is very simple. We take turns to pat this cup or choose to take it away.
Xu Mo: If the cup is taken away, the other person will make a fist and knock on the table. Knock on the cup or shoot on the table is a loss.
MC: This game seems to test the reaction ability...
Seeing me as if I don’t understand, Xu Mo smiled.
Xu Mo: Well, but it is not difficult. You should have learned it after we played a game.
Xu Mo: Want to try it?
MC: Yes!
I eagerly nodded my head. Xu Mo's eyes turned, and a meaningful smile appeared on his lips.
MC: ....
MC: This unscientific!
I took another sip of Sake in frustration. Facts have proved that the so-called "not difficult" of this game may only be aimed at Xu Mo.
In addition to testing his reaction ability, during the game, he always seems to know what I am going to do next, and foresee every movement of me in advance...
MC: You are almost like "mind reading"...
Faced my complaint, Xu Mo just smiled slightly
Xu Mo: Maybe it's just because I know you too well.
Xu Mo: So sometimes, your every move seems not to hard to guess .
He didn't seem to realize how blushing his words were, so I had to mutter quietly.
MC: This is too unfair...
Xu Mo: Well, you also try to focus all your attention on me, how about it?
MC: Huh?
Xu Mo dragged his face with his hands, tilted his head and looked at me.
Xu Mo: Perhaps this strategy will be more effective.
The heartbeat speeded up uncontrollably, and for a while, I couldn't tell whether he was teasing me or was serious.
But facing the current one-sided game situation, for the slight possibility of a comeback, I decided to try.
The new round soon began. I followed Xu Mo's words and stared at him intensively, hoping to see a trace of flaws in him.
And Xu Mo's mouth always had a slight smile, as if he was in a good mood.
It was my turn to take the cup. I noticed that Xu Mo's brows suddenly wrinkled. With a movement in my heart, I decided to change my tactics and took the cup away.
MC: ...!!
Xu Mo: I lost.
Xu Mo looked at our folded hands on the cup and sighed slightly
Xu Mo: It seems that I was too careless...
Xu Mo: This strategy should not be told to you lightly.
His voice showed faint grievances and regrets, and then he took the Sake and drank it in one go.
MC: Is it really so works?
I was a little dazed by the sudden victory.
Although I'm not sure if there is a reason for luck, I just raised my lips and jumped for joy when I finally caught this flawless person.
Next, the entire game seemed to be exceptionally smooth to me. I didn't expect that one day I could win Xu Mo so many times, and the smile on my face got bigger and bigger.
Until Xu Mo was fined another glass of Sake, looking at his reddish ears and the corners of his mouth, I suddenly noticed something.
I put away my smile and walked up to him, acting as if I was asking my sins.
MC: I almost fell for some big liar again!
Xu Mo's eyes moved slightly, and then he stretched out his hand towards me.
Xu Mo: What's wrong?
He looked at me and blinked a bit innocently.
Xu Mo: Why are you so angry? Did I do something wrong?
I laughed angrily by the way he knew it, and couldn't help squeezing his hand.
MC: Are you letting me win again?
Xu Mo did not answer immediately, but gently hooked my finger, and then wrapped it into his palm.
Xu Mo: Who said I let you?
Xu Mo: I am willing to lose to you.
He stretched out his hand, scraped the tip of my nose, and a smile burst out from the corner of his mouth.
Xu Mo: Finally I can see you smile without burden.
MC: Huh?
Xu Mo: From morning on, you look worried.
Xu Mo: Although I plan to not ask too much before you tell me. But I thought about it, it’s not easy to keep you in my heart
Xu Mo: I guess the thing that bothers you should have something to do with me, right
He thought a little bit.
Xu Mo: Was it the news you saw this morning?
Seeing Xu Mo's determined expression and thinking about his behavior just now, I suddenly understood something in my heart.
MC: So you proposed to play games with me, also to relax me?
MC: I can't hide anything from you
Xu Mo chuckled lightly, wrapped my hand into his palm, and deliberately asked in a joking tone.
Xu Mo: Tell me about it, how did the "Professor Xu" on the news bother you?
I was amused by him. Seeing that what was hidden in my heart had been exposed, I simply decided to confess.
MC: Actually... This bottle of sake was originally a gift to celebrate your prize. But I did not expect that the award list would be postponed.
MC: Although I still want to celebrate with you, but if the result is not good, I worry about you will be disappointed.
MC: So it has not been said.
After saying this, I took a long breath and felt that it was a lot easier.
MC: But now I also think that compared to these, we should cherish our time together more.
In order to show my determination, I picked up the phone on the table and turned it off without hesitation.
MC: Now I can't get distracted!
Xu Mo's eyes flickered, and then he turned off the phone just like me. He put his arms around my waist and raised his head slightly.
Xu Mo: Then we can say that, from now on, don't let anyone bothering us.
Xu Mo: Nobody can.
Seeing him add another sentence seriously, I couldn't help laughing.
MC: However, it is indeed my fault that I was always distracted before. Next, we can make up for this time.
Xu Mo: Hm? How do you plan to make up?
I looked outside and raised my eyebrows at him.
MC: Didn't you notice? The snow outside is getting smaller.
Xu Mo was a little puzzled, but he reacted quickly, and the corners of his lips curled up in a beautiful arc.
Outside the house, the original heavy snow in the sky turned into fragments of snowflakesㅡ
It fell lightly in the hot spring that was continuously rising, and melted silently.
After eating, Xu Mo and I were walking on the stone road in the courtyard. We could hear the gurgling water in our ears.
MC: It seems that the weather forecast is right, the snow is really much smaller.
Xu Mo: Hmm, but are you drunk? Actually, we can come later.
MC: Don't worry, I am fully awake.
MC: And I checked it online before, and two hours after a meal is the best time to soak in the hot spring!
Xu Mo just wanted to say something, but suddenly stopped. He stared at the hot spring pool in front of him, and his eyes flashed with surprise.
I followed his gaze to the open-air hot spring in front, and my eyes widened.
MC: This is...
I was surprised to find that there is no barrier between this private hot spring surrounded by stones.
🍁
MC: Strange, I clearly remember that the pictures I saw on the website before were separated by wooden boards.
I looked at the hot spring pool, my ears were getting hot. Thinking of two people in the same hot spring, I can't help but feel a subtle sense of tension.
Just when I was about to say something to break the awkward atmosphere, Xu Mo's voice suddenly sounded.
Xu Mo: .. I'd better go back to the room first.
Xu Mo: I'll come back when you finish.
MC: Hm?
I subconsciously raised my head. Xu Mo still had a gentle expression, but his eyes did not look at me.
Is it...
Am I the not only one who is nervous?
Looking at the steaming hot spring, I involuntarily swallowed my saliva, emboldening myself in my heart.
MC: Now that you have changed your clothes... let's go together.
In the hot spring pool, Xu Mo was sitting opposite me, the water just covered our chests
Xu Mo: Does the water feel hot?
I looked up, my eyes swam disobediently from his bare chest to the collarbone, Adam's apple and thin lips, and then I didn't dare to go up again.
MC: No, just right.
I shook my head, suppressed the excessively fast heartbeat, and sat down a little bit, submerged my shoulders in the warm water, and couldn't help but sigh.
The snowflakes fell on the face one by one, bringing icy coldness sense of touch, but the body and mind are steaming hot, and finally melts in the heat.
Xu Mo flicked his hand across the hot spring, and there was a sporadic sound of water. He closed his eyes, raised his head and leaned against the rock wall.
Xu Mo: I suddenly remembered that the last time we took a hot spring, it was the same as today with snow in the sky.
MC: Well, I remember too.
There was a movement in my heart, and I couldn't help but remember the time when I wished Xu Mo's birthday a warm feeling came from the bottom of my heart.
MC: It seems that many of my good memories about the snowy days are spent with you.
Xu Mo slowly opened his eyes, and there was also a layer of chlorinated water vapor on his eyes, and the curvature of the corners of his lips seemed clear and moving.
Xu Mo: For me, it's not just the snow.
The gurgling water and his voice merged together, and fell into my ears through the mist.
Under Xu Mo's gentle gaze, it seems that the distant memories in my mind are being warmed up little by little.
Perhaps he had been watching for too long, and my throat was a little dry. My gaze fell to the side of the tray floating on the water, which was filled with wagashi and hot tea.
Wagashi are traditional Japanese confections that are often served with green tea, especially the types made of mochi, anko and fruits.
I picked up the teacup and took a drink. Obviously it's not alcohol, but it makes me feel a little drunk.
I patted my slightly hot face, trying to stretch my body, but my foot inadvertently touched Xu Mo's leg.
Xu Mo: ....
MC: .....
The breath and heartbeat went wild in an instant. In the pool water, it seems that every part of the body has become more sensitive.
I subconsciously looked at Xu Mo, his eyes flickered, and then faintly looked away, and picked up another teacup on the tray.
Xu Mo: The tea smell is very strong.
MC: Hm..
MC: This opportunities are rare. Why don't we "replace Sake with tea" and clink a glass?
As soon as I finished speaking, I bit my tongue viciously for the proposal I blurted out.
Xu Mo's hand holding the teacup seemed to shake. He looked at my red cheeks curiously and chuckled uncontrollably.
Xu Mo: Well, it's a good proposal, but...
Xu Mo: Clinking glasses is usually for celebration. What are we going to celebrate now?
I was asked all of a sudden. While thinking, an idea flashes over my mind.
MC: To celebrate...
Xu Mo: If you say anything like "Celebrate your winning in advance", I will be a little disappointed.
MC: Ha..
This person definitely has mind-reading skills!
I looked at Xu Mo's smiling eyes through the white mist, and my lips curled up.
The fine snow slowly fell, and the water in the pool was clear, but not as bright as his eyes. I suddenly felt everything in front of me, something unreal like a dream.
Such a good person is now opposite me, right in front of my eyes, drinking a tea with me and sharing the same snowy color.
Until I saw Xu Mo's eyes clearly reflecting my figure. I suddenly felt that this moment has already surpassed everything.
So I said almost subconsciously.
MC: Then celebrate the moment we have.
Under the misty surface of xenon hydrogen, the skin we touched lightly rubbed inadvertently.
The clear touch brought up bursts of electric current, causing ripples in my heart. I no longer stagger my eyes as before, but quietly stare at Xu Mo in front of me.
His Adam's apple slid, and a white warm mist made his dark eyes sparkle with water.
I suddenly had an illusion, as if Xu Mo could look straight into my heart through the hazy mist.
After a while, he chuckled lightly.
Xu Mo: Is it just for now?
MC: What?
Xu Mo didn't answer, but suddenly got up and leaned toward me. The chest that had been submerged was also exposed at this time.
The warm and slightly hot from hot springs steamed his skin a little red, and the water rippled and then fell again.
I touched the ground with my feet a little nervously, but a little unstable due to the buoyancy of the water, Xu Mo held my waist with one hand in time.
I raised my head and slowly looked at the line of Xu Mo's jaw, my fingertips sinking into the tight muscles behind his shoulders.
His hand slid across my back, tightening me up a little bit, and I unconsciously put my hand on his shoulder and against his chest.
MC: Xu Mo..
The light lines of the water wave healed our chest and back. Xu Mo lowered his head, his lips were close to my ears, his voice was stained with a low voice.
Xu Mo: What I want to say is, not just celebrating this moment. But...
Xu Mo: For every moment we have.
There seemed to be a touch of nothing on the earlobe, as if clusters of flames were lit from there.
The tea cups collided with a crisp sound.
Xu Mo took a sip of tea, pinched my chin and pressed it down
Seeing his face getting closer and closer, I can no longer care about the others, I can only instinctively close my eyes
Feel the numb touch on the lips, and the sweet tea fragrance reverberating in the mouth.
🍁
With a splash of water, Xu Mo got up and walked out of the hot spring pool.
Xu Mo: During the meal, our clothes were left out and dampened by the snow. I will go back to the room to get the clothes we changed in the morning.
MC: Wait, I'll go with you.
After I finished speaking, I stood up, Xu Mo stood there, his eyes stopped slightly when he looked at me.
I followed his eyes and looked down, the wet towels were tight clings to my body, clearly outlines the lines, dripping continuously.
A cold wind blew, and I seemed to have noticed something, so I hurriedly sat back.
MC: So cold...
Xu Mo laughed lightly, then nodded.
Xu Mo: Well, it will be a little cold if you just walk back.
Xu Mo: So, wait for me here, okay?
I touched my slightly hot cheek, smiled and nodded at him.
MC: Alright
When Xu Mo returned with the clothes, I was eating the wagashi on the tray. He couldn't help but smile when he saw me.
Xu Mo: Are you hungry?
MC: A little. You see, these fruits are so delicate.
I pushed the tray towards him, Xu Mo squatted down and looked carefully.
Xu Mo: Well, indeed.
Xu Mo: I once heard a very skilled master say that wagashi can express anything, whether it is natural or human.
MC: Really?
Hearing his words, I put my arm on the rock beside the pool and curiously observed the wagashi in the plate.
MC: This is a special wagashi for Valentine's Day. I don't know if there is anything special.
Xu Mo: I think there should be.
Xu Mo also leaned down slightly and observed with me.
Xu Mo: Maybe we can guess by using our imagination?
He smiled and twisted one of the wagashi.
It looks relatively ordinary among the different shapes of fruits. The round shape is like a small steamed bun, but on the top. Covered with a circle of yellow marks.
Xu Mo: The surface of this fruit should be deliberately roasted to brown
After watching it for a while, Xu Mo handed it to me.
Xu Mo: Did you think of something?
MC: Hmm.. the yellow circle.
MC: Like a full moon?
I raised my eyes to look at Xu Mo, and he curled his mouth slightly, motioning me to continue.
As if being woken up, I looked at this seemingly inconspicuous wagashi, and seemed to understand the intention of the person who made it.
MC: The moon is a very important image in love and can be used to express many kinds of emotions...
MC: So it seems that this fruit really fits the theme of Valentine's Day.
Xu Mo: Have a taste?
Looking at Xu Mo's eyebrows, my heart moved slightly, so I leaned over and bit the fruit in his hand.
The sweetness melted in my mouth, and I was pleasantly surprised to see the red fillings of the wagashi under the white skin.
MC: It's red bean paste...
There seemed to be a trace of surprise in Xu Mo's eyes. After a while, he nodded thoughtfully.
Xu Mo: Specially choose red as the filling...
Xu Mo: Probably because the person who created it wanted to express the sincere emotions between lovers.
MC: It turns out that wagashi can really express people's feelings...
Seeing such an emotional Japanese fruit, a burst of soft emotions creeping in my heart, I subconsciously asked Xu Mo.
MC: You have a bite too?
As soon as I finished speaking, I suddenly remembered something, so I immediately changed my words.
MC: But you don’t like sweets so much, so it’s mine!
I stretched out my hand to take the wagashi from his hand, but Xu Mo suddenly pulled his hand
MC: Uh?
Seeing my puzzlement, he chuckled lightly.
Xu Mo: I really don't like sweets very much.
Xu Mo: However, I still want to taste such beautiful food.
MC: But...
Before I finished speaking, I saw Xu Mo's face enlarged before my eyes.
He put his hand behind my head and leaned down. In the blink of an eye, there was a warmth on the lips.
The scorching breath fell on the face, itching and numb, dispelling the coolness in the air.
The thick snow on the edge of the pool turned into melted water droplets and fell into the water, arousing small splashes.
After a long while, Xu Mo released his hand behind my head, with a slight smile on his mouth.
Xu Mo: Well, it's sweeter than expected.
🍁
After soaking in the hot springs, Xu Mo and I walked slowly back to the room. As soon as we opened the door, we stopped in unison.
A fancy "citation cake" was placed in the center of the table.
Under the two big letters "Certificate" written with red chocolate, there are also dark chocolates with a row of small letters one by one.
"Best Scientist Award".
Xu Mo raised his eyebrows and glanced at me leisurely. I coughed slightly awkwardly.
MC: Ahem. If I said that the waiter sent the wrong room, would you believe it?
At this time, the door was pushed open again, and the waiter put two knives and forks on the side of the tray.
Waiter: Miss MC, you are back, is the hot spring still comfortable?
Waiter: This is the special cake you ordered. Because the snow was a little smaller, the driver was asked to go down the mountain to retrieve it. Please enjoy.
The waiter cast a "won't disturb you" look, then bowed and walked out. After a short silence, I heard a chuckle.
MC: Well. This is actually another gift I originally prepared to celebrate your winning.
MC: I always feel that at this time of celebration, we still have to eat cakes to have more atmosphere.
MC: Although the appearance is a bit exaggerate, the taste should be good.
Xu Mo chuckled and nodded.
Xu Mo: Well, I believe this cake must be delicious. and.….
Xu Mo: I am also sure that you really care about this.
He paused for a while, then took out his mobile phone leisurely and turned it on.
Xu Mo: Since you want to know so much, let's watch it together.
MC: What?
Xu Mo: Don’t you really want to know the results of the awards? I remember the news you saw in the morning saying that the announcement should be postponed to the afternoon.
Xu Mo: The time should be right now.
MC: But...
Seeing his calm movements, my eyes widened, but I looked more nervous than him.
Xu Mo: If you don't let you know now, you will keep thinking about it.
As soon as his voice fell, with a few minutes of reminder sound, countless messages flooded into Xu Mo's phone.
Looking at his cell phone that kept vibrating, my heartbeat speeded up. Xu Mo seemed to be a little surprised by it.
Xu Mo: A Ming, sent fifteen text messages and made six calls.
He frowned slightly.
Xu Mo: It seems that I told him to be good at "focusing" things, but he doesn't take it seriously.
MC: ....
MC: I also question the way you "focusing" at this time!
Xu Mo tapped the screen twice until everything was calm again, but there was no expression on his face.
MC: How?
I looked at him with anticipation and ambition.
After a moment of silence, Xu Mo suddenly leaned over to me, buried his head in the socket of my neck, and let out a light sigh.
Xu Mo: ....
My heart jumped suddenly.
MC: No, it doesn't matter...
I just feel my brain is blank, and my words become stumbling.
MC: It may be because the selection criteria have changed this year. They have to take other factors into consideration.
MC: And this is their loss! You are so powerful, they will definitely regret it in the future!
Xu Mo: Is it?
MC: Yes!
I replied categorically, as I was about to continue speaking, but suddenly caught a murmur of laughter, and then I was surprised that something was wrong.
MC: .. Why are you lying again!
I straightened up from Xu Mo's arms at once, but he grabbed my wrist with a smile, and pulled it into his embrace again.
Xu Mo: Where am I lying.
Xu Mo: It seems unfair to say that.
Xu Mo: I didn't seem to say what the result was.
Seeing the successful smile in his eyes, I bit my lip unwillingly. After thinking for a while, I had an idea, pretending to be angrily and got into the blanket beside me.
Although the news of Xu Mo's award made the corners of my mouth almost fly into the sky, I still constricted my smile and adjusted my tone of voice.
MC: I'm so nervous, but you still want to tease me!
MC: Originally, apart from Sake and cake, I also prepared a third gift for you. Now I have to consider it!
The low laughter in the ear was suddenly paused.
I secretly laughed and counted down silently in my heart, 3, 2, 1 until the last number fell, I really felt a pair of hands hugging me from behind.
Xu Mo: Sorry, because you looked so cute just now, I couldn't help but want to tease you.
Xu Mo: So, can you tell me what the gift is now?
Xu Mo waited for a while, but when he saw that I still didn't answer, he suddenly coughed.
Xu Mo: (cough)
Xu Mo: It seems to have been outside for too long and some have caught a cold
I listened to Xu Mo's deliberate coughing. I was startled first, and then laughed uncontrollably. I didn't expect him to think of such a childish way.
Hear my laugh, Xu Mo also laughed.
The arms around my waist tightened a bit, and when he spoke again, his tone became more serious.
Xu Mo: MC.
Xu Mo: Actually, I don't value this award that much.
My heart beats, this is the first time I heard him say that
Xu Mo: Because all the things I wanted to obtain were obtained the moment the research results were published, or even earlier.
Xu Mo: Any praise from the outside world, to me, is nothing but brocade icing on.
His voice paused, as if thinking of something, and then he smiled softly.
Xu Mo: However, everything you did for me today, I am very happy
Xu Mo: Whether it is a gift to me or your sincere words to me, I really feel how important I am in your heart.
Xu Mo rubbed my forehead with his chin across the blanket
Xu Mo: I feel happy, nervous, or even sad from the bottom of my heart
Xu Mo: Probably there is only you silly girl.
The soft words fell in my heart, and there was a drop of water.
Xu Mo: I think the reason why I always can't help teasing you, maybe it's just because I want to see you more and show off because of me.
Xu Mo: In a certain way, I can also be regarded as a special "collector".
Xu Mo: No matter what kind of meal it is, I want to have it.
Xu Mo: With that said, can you forgive me?
The delicate tenderness was sewn on him slightly, I still did not answer, but responded to him with action.
I lifted the blanket and kissed Xu Mo's face with his surprised eyes.
I ran my fingers across his fine hair and stopped on his face. Then I pulled him tightly and tightly toward me.
Heavy breathing sounded in the room, as if confused, I kissed his cheek closely and pressed against his auricle.
MC: I am not angry, you are a fool..
I followed his ear bones all the way down, and after hearing a short gasp, I turned to a thin rub.
I don't know how long it took. When I met Xu Mo's eyes awkwardly, I later realized that I was extremely ashamed of my bold actions, and subconsciously shrank back.
But Xu Mo did not allow me to retreat. He put his hands on my waist together a few inches, pressed them to my forehead, and looked at me deeply with his eyes.
Xu Mo: Is this the third gift?
The thin, hot breath entangled, I panted lightly and shook my head.
MC: ....It is a promise.
I calmed down my breath and slowly said the words that had been brewing in my heart for a long time.
MC: I want to wait for the results to come out, whether you win or not, I will tell youㅡ
MC: In the future, I will stay with you and spend every memorable moment with you.
MC: Remember the flower with crystals you gave me?
MC: I think the same as you, every moment we walked together is very precious to me
MC: Although I can't make such a romantic gift like you, I can only express it in ordinary sounds.
MC: But this is my truest thought.
The evening wind slowly passed by, and behind Xu Mo, the sky full of red leaves fell. I felt in a daze that we at this moment are closer than ever.
Xu Mo lowered his eyes, looked straight at me for a moment, and laughed a little.
Xu Mo: MC's ability to talk about love is really getting better.
My cheeks suddenly became red when I met the narrow gaze in his eyes.
MC: I'm just talking to my heart!
Xu Mo: Yes, I know.
Xu Mo: I don't think what you said is ordinary. On the contrary, it means a lot to me.
Xu Mo: However, although I received such a beautiful promise, I thought about it for a while-
Xu Mo: When you say this, aren't you also sorting me out?
MC: !... I
Seeing that I was speechless for a while, Xu Mo smiled, his eyes moved down, and landed on my slightly opened lips. The emotion in the deep eyes is unclear.
Xu Mo: Sometimes actions are more explicit than words.
He raised his hand and squatted down my lips with his fingers,
Xu Mo: The sincerity contained in the promise, maybe in another way... can make me feel more directly.
He whispered, and suddenly raised his eyes to look at me, dark light circling in his eyes.
Xu Mo: Are you willing to?
The heat surged to my cheeks, and my mind was chaotic. In the next second, Xu Mo clasped my wrist tightly and pressed me on the tatami.
MC: Wh-
The soft tip of the tongue pried my teeth away inch by inch, and grinds together delicately and long. It seems to wear out all the heat and lingering.
While my consciousness was cloudy, I tasted the faint fragrance of tea that still remained in his mouth, but it was like a very high alcohol wine, which made me feel drunk.
His head raised passively. Xu Mo squinted his eyes slightly, and gradually reduced his strength by pressing my hand.
His fingers rubbed the skin on the side of my wrist gently and slowly, letting my body gradually relax
The surrounding temperature rose sharply, and I instinctively caught his neck and responded to his tossing and turning.
Just when I felt a little dizzy, Xu Mo let go of me, a familiar chuckle sounded in my ears.
Seeing that I was a little weak, Xu Mo held my waist and let me sit on him.
I rested on his strong abs with one hand, and grasped his messy clothes with the other weakly.
MC: Xu Mo....
I lowered my head and saw what seemed to be suppressed in his gloomy eyes, so I subconsciously leaned down and pecked his chin.
Xu Mo: ....
The light and shadow in Xu Mo's eyes flickered, his eyes darkened.
Before I could react, his hand that was touching my hair suddenly pulled me towards him and kissed me again.
Unlike before, this kiss was overwhelmingly aggressive.
The tingling sensation of the intertwined lips and teeth ran through my body like an electric current, and the blood seemed to boil.
With warmth in Xu Mo's palm, he shook all the way down my spine.
His senses and thoughts were all occupied by him, and in a trance, I felt the kiss gradually slip and strengthen.
There was a slight tingling pain from my collarbone, and I couldn't help but exhale softly, and there was a warm and humid touch.
A layer of fine sweat oozes out on the tightly adhering skin, giving it an intimate and sticky feeling. I inserted my hand into Xu Mo's sweat-drenched hair and looked down at him.
He closed his eyes, his concentrated face was stained with the color of red leaves.
His sight seemed to be burned to the point of nowhere to rest.
Perhaps because of my tension, Xu Mo's lips bend slightly. He lifted his palm up to cover my eyes.
Xu Mo: Close your eyes .
Extremely strong, but with extreme gentleness.
I slowly closed my eyes and surrendered myself to him. The last image remaining on the retina is Xu Mo deep eyes.
And a brilliant red.

Thoughts on The Mitchells vs the Machines
I watched it a while ago and kept forgetting to post my thoughts on it, but some posts here on tumblr recently reminded me.
I disagree with the majority takeaways I see but is that not the spice of life?
As a standalone movie its inoffensive and the writing of it will likely exit my brain in a few months. However I can appreciate that the visual style was different from the typical fare and the mixture of 2d elements for visual embellishments were mostly enjoyable and well-suited for Katie as the POV character.
It's a bit "hyper" for my liking, but that's fine, it's likely intended for an audience that's accustomed to the flood that is the current norm of the internet. It was probably made with GIFable moments in mind and that is the most frequent content that is shared about it, so it certainly succeeded in that regard.
My more critical take is that jokes are delivered at the expense of what could be more authentic themes. Quips are made that draw attention to character flaws or undercut questions the movie should try to answer, but inevitably they are ignored to move onto the next joke or story beat.
The rest would fall more into spoiler territory, so read more for that.
--"They Were Both In the Wrong"
I personally disagree heavily with the thrust of how "both sides" were wrong when the degrees are disproportionate.
I've seen claims that Katie was "as in the wrong" as her father, but she's incredibly patient to the man who does her material harm.
I've yet to have seen someone say specifically what Katie did *wrong* to her father that is at all on par with the *years* he at best hasn't been able to interact with her or worse, actively refused to engage with her interests.
I would generously venture that her flaw was that she was more willing to communicate her feelings to strangers, but she easily talks to her mother and brother- her brother even helps her with her movies and she happily engages him with his own interests, which pivots the point back to how her father is physically/emotionally unavailable and led to the erosion and distance between the two of them.
Due to this, MvM comes across more as Kaite having to do so much more to guide her father rather than a more mutual learning experience for the both of them.
--"Technology that [Dis]Connects"
It's probably beyond the scope and intent of the film, but I was surprised there was no examination about why technology can be more alluring than interacting with physically present people.
For better or worse, the internet can be used as a means of supplementing the validation and acceptance of family. It can also lead to no longer connecting to people around them because of the validation high of appealing to a constantly 'awake' sea of strangers- the spotlight is warmer than the cold reality that they are not the internet image they have cultivated.
For example, the rival 'perfect' family was never revealed to be a carefully constructed highlight reel that Mrs. Mitchell envies, they really were actually that perfect- because that provides an easier punchline than an examination or acknowledgement of how the internet can create unhealthy expectations.
I also can't expect MvM to acknowledge the reality that LGBTA+ people who are rejected by their family resort to seeking a new one through the internet because it would be much harder to redeem/rehabilitate a man defined by being tethered to "old values" if he was homophobic instead of "overprotective" and apprehensive at his daughter's departure from home and her dubious art career.
But hey we got that quick line at the end that Katie likes a girl, so that's a diversity win or something.
(To be clear I'm not expecting a whole parade or even an A or B-plot dedicated to it, but I think it should be acknowledged that this kind of "surprise inclusion" is very easily erased with a change of audio and would be completely unsurprised if this were the case for countries that are homophobic. People can be happy about it, but it is dishonest to pretend that this is a bolder statement than it is.)
In that sense, I do and don't hold MvM to taking a "safer" route about how family always has your back, but this still feels like an important omission considering the focus on technology and its dynamic with the Mitchells.
I will also say that it was also bizarre, to me at least, that the obvious route that her father sees the value of home videos didn't become an active point between him and Katie. Or that Mr. Mitchell's carpentry never really amounts to anything despite having a sentimental wooden moose.
Lastly, I think it's an unintentional, but it's interesting that Katie going to college to pursue her passion is viewed as a Terrible Thing by her father even though if he had his way, he'd be ostensibly living in the woods away from everyone else except his wife.
This isn't a problem, people are a collection of contradictions, but It's fascinating to see what the *narrative* treats as a difficult sacrifice while simultaneously pulling at heartstrings when PAL cites how children ignore their mothers. There's an unexamined comedy that Mr. Mitchell's losing out on his 'passion' to live in the woods away from people is treated as tragic despite the movie's insistence on staying connected with your blood family.
--"The Inconsistent Personhood of AI"
PAL is rightfully angry at being discarded for something new; it's provided as a glimpse of what Katie will do when she finds 'her people' at college.
This in of itself is a good hook, because there is no one universal answer to when a flawed relationship should be mended with compromise or if it's better off being broken for the wellbeing of the ones involved. Family and relationships are not programming, it's a choice and a gamble for whatever it brings but is nonetheless something that must be mutually worked upon.
Initially I thought that PAL was being set up as an exaggerated parallel to Mr. Mitchell. PAL and Mr. Mitchell did their best to provide for their family. PAL and Mr. Mitchell are in different stages of being 'discarded' by their family. PAL and Mr. Mitchell both retaliate at their lack of power in the scenario by using the power granted by their roles to infringe on the autonomy of others for selfish reasons.
PAL even gives a 'chance' for her plan to be halted with, I had assumed this was being set up as the thesis of the movie, about humanity and the value of family, relationships, etc. being used to help someone who is already hurting.
But despite Katie looking at the camera and explaining herself, it is never actually directly resolved or challenged because a punchline was deemed more desirable for this narrative climax.
This begs the question of why PAL bothered with the pretense that she could be reasoned with, especially since this is not some question leveled at all of humanity, just two people.
I'm curious how the writers came to the conclusion that this was the best execution of the scene or if Katie's speech was considered immune to any challenge from PAL. Would anyone have accepted this outcome if PAL were not an AI but instead a person?
It's not necessarily bad writing they went this route, but I doubt anyone would consider this good writing either.
By the end of the movie, PAL is no longer a 'person' who was betrayed and is lashing out, she is an object to be destroyed because the movie has to wrap up. No compassion or chances are spared to this AI that did literally everything asked of her except take being discarded quietly.
Did PAL deserve a redemption arc? For this length of movie, probably not. But it could have concluded with a commitment to doing no further harm. Instead it is an accidental glimpse at how easily the pretense of compassion can be quickly discarded and mostly unexamined with the right framing.
A likely unintentional example is the conditional humanity given to Eric and Deborahbot who are adopted as "family" while the rest of the robots are mowed down without another thought. Some are even beaten and broken while begging for mercy, because again, it is a funnier punchline.
Far be it for me to advocate that the murderbots needed 'a second chance uvu' but for a movie whose conceit rests on 'sticking by family' and 'giving chances', the writers certainly made a choice in deciding which AI get honorary humanity and spared violent death- perhaps PAL had a point about humanity's callousness after all. Bad robots are discarded, good robots get to live.
Even the CEO who realizes he enabled this mess (easily the most unrealistic part of the movie, honestly) is given another chance and he manages to take away a completely wrong lesson.
Speaking of-
--"Maybe I Shouldn’t Have Used Tech Like This"
There's a particular image/gif set posted about MvM with the CEO apologizing for the machine uprising, attributing it to unchecked technology and monopolies. I've always seen it accompanied by people congratulating the scene as if any of this is at all relevant to the movie.
Charitably, these are people who haven't watched the movie and don't know that PAL is a phone AI single-handedly doing this, but most take the stance that this scene is proof the movie is not saying technology is bad, only corporations are.
The speech isn't technically wrong but it is so utterly divorced from what happens in the movie that it's surreal to see people congratulate it as anything but a moment of soapboxing.
None of the datagrabbing was used at all as part of the takeover. It's all magical kid-friendly terminators with no relevance to what anyone's browsing history is. If the company was one that produced robot assistants instead of a being a super tech monopoly, there would be no narrative difference.
The closest to a predatory tactic that is used in MvM is the offer of free wifi which is used to lure most people into their cells which they happily comply with. Curiously this... commentary of people’s mindless addiction to technology is not acknowledged by the Tumblr Court with the same intensity as the CEO’s speech.
But more constructively, I do feel it’s a missed opportunity that Katie who's supposed to be an extremely online person apparently never said any bad things about her family or made any petty vent films for PAL to weaponize. Instead an in-media audio at one of the outskirt locations was used to accomplish its Traitor Revealed moment.
IN CONCLUSION
MvM is a movie that involves topics that ought to be touched on and explored properly in media and chickens out on all of it due to possible concerns with age-appropriate handling or because it was more committed to its comedy than whatever it has to say about family, change and how technology affects people.
It also reminded me that I hope media will finally graduate from the trope that if you spec into any ‘outdoorsy’ hobby you are incurably afraid of technology.

Gran Torino and the Legacy of Dehumanisation
Oh boy. Time to make another sect of bnha fans hate me. These are always fun- and always seem to come after I browse the bnha spoilers tag.
So after the 281 spoilers hit, once again, the fandom seems to have been divided into two very vocal camps - those who are celebrating GT’s death, and those who are offended that anyone would dare do such a thing. The former hated GT (and in some cases Miruko, too) for being openly degrading towards Shigaraki, labelling him an ‘it’, a ‘thing’ or a ‘monster’, and the latter say... well of course he did. Shigaraki is a monster. He’s violent, destructive, aggressive, he’s purposefully modified his body in order to destroy, he’s the villain. And we can’t hate on a beloved mentor character for being mean to a villain.
Now, my own opinions on the situation are... very meh. I wasn’t particularly invested in GT’s character, I held no particular affection for him, but neither did I virulently hate him. That being said, I do think there are some very interesting things to think about in regards to the whole debacle and people’s reactions to it.
To an extent, I do think that a certain amount of it is played up for kicks, or happened as a result of a subset of the community playing hype-man for each other until a tiny gripe became a massive point of contention, but more than that I think a lot of it boils down to what the villains (specifically the LOV) represent to the reader. The LOV seem to have separated the hero stans and the villain stans more than any other bit of media I’ve been a part of the fandom for, and seem to be the source of a lot of these conflicts (see: Hawks v Twice, Dabi v Endeavour). And I think that is largely because Horikoshi has put so much effort into humanising them. I’ve mentioned before in an offhand way about how of course the LOV resonate with people, they’re a bunch of young adults who are considered to be some form of ‘degenerate’ by the general populace, who are dissatisfied with a corrupt system and want to see the perpetrators held accountable for the suffering they’ve experienced. They’re a perfect microcosm of all us LGBT+ kids, us poor kids, us disabled kids, us POC, all the young adults who feel like society would rather see us locked up or dead than simply existing as we are. Of course, they’re also wilfully violent, and fictional violence is a contentious point these days. Some find it unforgivable, some find it justified, some might be living out a power fantasy about hurting their own oppressors through it, and some simply don’t care, because a fictional murderer never actually killed anyone. So now you’ve got groups of people who dislike the villains because they’re violent and aggressive, groups of people who sympathise with the villains but can’t justify their actions, and groups of people who both sympathise with the villains and consider their actions a reasonable response to the abuse they’ve gone through.
And now we come back to Gran Torino. The beloved mentor of All Might, the man who taught Deku to use his power without breaking himself, the living proof of a legacy of heroism. The thing is that I think he represents something very interesting. Where Endeavour is the epitome of the corrupt system, where All Might is the accidental arbiter of complacency, where Izuku is the hope for a better, more compassionate future, Gran Torino is the visual representation of tradition. He’s a classically successful hero, he was fairly well-known back in his day, he took down a fair few villains in his time, and he lived to train not just his own successor, but his successor’s successor. He’s been kicking villain butt since his early years. I’ve seen people getting angry that GT seems to blame Shigaraki for villainous doings that are not his fault (see also: Mic/Eraser blaming Shigaraki for what happened to Shirakumo), and I think that’s because he didn’t view Shigaraki as an individual with the capacity for right or wrong, he viewed him as a symptom. A symptom of that disease called villainy, the one to blame for the suffering of the people he cared about - Toshinori and Nana. Nana didn’t give up her son because she was a heartless mother, or because she didn’t love him. She was forced to because of a villain. To the heroes, ‘villains’ are an angry, violent monolith that needs to be dealt with, and individual villains are symptoms of that intangible evil.
To him, Shigaraki isn’t a hurt child, an abuse victim, a person to sympathise with. He’s an immediate threat, and a synthetic monster put together by AfO and Ujiko to act on that villainy. He’s a boss fight. And no one feels bad when they’re kicking a boss’s ass, because that’s just what you’re meant to do.
And so to circle back, I think that’s where the divide comes from. On one side, you’ve got people seeing Shigaraki the villain, Shigaraki the threat, the aggressor, the boss fight. And on the other you’ve got people seeing Shigaraki the victim.
And the thing is? He’s both. And for as long as the characters in universe fail to see the root causes of villainy rather than seeing villainy as the root cause itself, they’re going to keep creating new villains themselves. Because how many of us, given superpowers and the ability to change the world around us, would become villains in the name of bettering society for ourselves? Violence for the sake of violence isn’t acceptable, but dehumanising the violent and stripping away the environment that cultivated them won’t do anything except perpetuate the cycle.
So was Gran Torino a bad person for attacking Shigaraki? No. Was he wrong to dehumanise him, and doing harm by doing so? Yes. Once again, as most of these things I write seem to come to the conclusion of, the answer is somewhere in the middle.

Aki’s P5 / R fanfic recs!
Hi, and welcome to everyone reading this post! I’m Aki, I write fics (you can fin me on Ao3 as saikowrites) but I also read fics! And since P5 has been living 24/7 in my brain rent free for the past year and a half at this point, I wanted to share my favorite works of all the fandom – some of them are very niche or from non-famous authors, but I wanted to do them justice!
I want to do a brief introduction before starting the (long) list of my recs:
Everything in here contains a certain degree of spoilers, except for maybe three au fics. Read this list only if you’ve at least played P5. Royal fics are signaled with a ‘Royal’ tag;
Fics that don’t have an author reported are orphaned works;
I won’t report the tags, as it would take too long, so if you’re interested in a fic, please open the link and mind its tag before reading it, so you don’t come around something that makes you uncomfortable;
Fic recs obviously reflect my tastes and preferences. For example, I love suffering without necessarily a happy ending and I don’t like fluff or domestic works, so browse this list knowing that;
This list will probably be updated as soon as I have enough new recs. If things get too long, I’ll split categories and make a part 2;
95% of these are shauke fics. I multiship a lot so you could come around some shumako or ryuann but shuake is the main focus here. I hope to create a more diverse fic recs post in the future for other pairings tho!
PROMISING WORKS I’m not one to read ongoing works, because I have a tremendous fear of commitment regarding fanfics, and I tend to browse and filters through finished works only. But if a fic made me press the subscription button, it means it stole my heart away. Will I get heartbroken waiting for it to update forever? Who knows. [AN: This section didn’t age well as only one of these works has actually been completed as of January 2022, lol. I do think they’re all valid though, definitely worth a read even if not (still) updated!]
- Fourth Time's a Charm by Strange and Intoxicating (M) | Royal | shuake | 5 chapters, ongoing “The world was saved, Goro Akechi was dead, and Akira Kurusu was, again, waking up on the same godforsaken train pulling into Shibuya station. At least this time Akechi remembered. Oh, joy.” I’m a sucker for time loops and time travel in general, and this fic is just so accurate with the characterization and the plot pacing. And it’s definitely much more than a retelling with just some additional memories.
- goro akechi's field notes on a false reality by vntagecassette (M) | Royal | shuake | 3 chapters, ongoing Goro Akechi wakes up on February 3rd, and he has to understand. I’m already starting to sweat for this one because it was last updated in June this year but. It’s just so experimental. I’d gladly see what the author has in storage with this one, because it’s a very original take on fic writing for what I’ve seen in the P5 fandom.
- gravitational reset by chashmish (T) | Royal | shuake | NOW COMPLETE Maruki’s actualization messes up with personal distances and so Goro and Ren find themselves in a painful and uncomfortable situation in-between the red string legend and His Dark Material’s daimon-human bond: they can’t get far from each other without tearing apart. I have such high hopes with this – especially considered its author. Chashmish’s characters are always accurate and funny, they can be idiots without being corny, while keeping all their core intact. I trust her to finish this, because it’s a take that I’m so weak for, and it deserves to be told.
- How I Married A Demon Lord by KivaEmber (T) | shuake | series, 3 works, ongoing Akira Kurusu is a journalism student that gets kidnapped and ends up in another world at the service of evil overlord Goro. Except nothing is as it seems. Take a hilarious parody of a trash isekai anime. Take Persona 5 characters. Put them together with crack taken seriously, well-written comedy, and shameless pining. That’s it, that’s the series. And it’s a gem you all should be reading.
- Rhythm of your heart by A_Splattering_Of_Paint (E) | shuake | 5/8 chapters, unfinished (?) “The first step to a clean breakup is not to make out with your ex boyfriend. Unfortunately, Akira has a lot of trouble with step one.” I’m definitely not one for terrible ex-boyfriends but boi. BOI. Did this fic hurt. And it hurts all the most knowing it most likely will never be finished, but I put it here nonetheless because they’re so in character, and the fic has some very good comic moments, and Futaba having an incredible gacha luck is just canon to me.
EVERGREEN CLASSICS Some of the ‘oldest,’ most famous and appreciated works in the fandom that I particularly enjoyed. If you don’t know where to start, these will always be a good choice.
- Sunny with a Chance of Storms by Mysecretfanmoments, SuggestiveScribe (E) | shuake | one shot Inspired by this art by Marudyne. Akira discovers he’d be willing to pay to give Akechi a blowjob. Things escalate from there. Slow building storm-fic with beautifully pictured crushing Akira, supporting Ann, and unfathomable Goro. A little gem.
- Paranoia by nafnaf (E) | shuake | one shot Thieves play a silly game suggested by Ann. Some things are confessed, some others don’t, and Akira eventually gains a nice win out of it. Out of all the ‘Thieves throw a party and Goro attends’ fics, I find this one to be the funniest and with the most accurate characterization. You’ll laugh, you’ll hold your breaths and you’ll definitely go ‘gasp’.
- Dreamcatcher by SomewhereFlying (E) | shuake | one shot Wet dreams but make it extremely vivid. A classic dream-sex fic with a lot of (resolved?) sexual tension for all your power bottom Goro needs.
- this account's tweets are protected by alsahm, benetnash (T) |shuake | 10 chapters, finished Fandom au in the form of a twitfic where everyone is into Featherman, Crow writes fic, and Joker crushes hard. If you haven’t read it already, do it now honestly: it’s the wittiest, funniest, most wholesome fic into the Persona 5 tag on AO3. Brilliant jokes, subtle references, a nice plot, and tons of mutual pining. I’m sure you could enjoy it even if you don’t ship anything, even if chatfic aren't usually your thing. It's just plain iconic.
- The Next Time Around by chashmish (T) | shuake / makoann | 12 chapters, finished Makoto and Ann get married in Venice, and both Goro and Akira attend. The problem is: they’re exes. I’m not one for exes that get back together but boy, did I enjoy this fic. Everything is beautifully curated, from Venice atmospheres to the cringy panic of meeting your ex after years. Bonus points for the heartwarming flashbacks of their youth.
GENERAL RECS The fics I’ve enjoyed the most and that I go back to reading sometimes.
- Silent Night by nafnaf (lavenderet) (E) | shuake | one shot Years later, Akira and Goro keep meeting on Christmas Eve, and Christmas Eve only. But Akira cannot stop wanting to catch Goro for good. A bittersweet, post-canon fic that can be soft and honest without being cheesy. They’re more open, but at the same time they never talk properly, and I think this is painfully fitting.
- To Core an Apple by Chromophilic_Daydream (E) | shuake | one shot Akira Kurusu is just an enigma Goro Akechi is wrapping his mind around. Beautiful character study kinda fic, with a stream of consciousness approach that perfectly closes like a circle.
- cake by the ocean by OpheliaDusk (E) | ryuann | one shot In Hawaii, Mishima pukes in the toilet. Akira is the one unlucky enough to have to stick with him, while Ann and Ryuji are left outside experimenting with unresolved feelings. Might be my all-time favorite ryuann fic – both the mood and the characterization are just perfect.
- La Douleur Exquise (M) | shuake | one shot After being defeated in Shido’s ship by the Thieves, Akechi runs away. And Akira follows. And things escalate. A very well crafted one shot that will keep the suspense high until the end and that, I’m sure, will catch you completely off guard.
- Time (E) | shumako | one shot Akira is stuck in a time loop, but maybe, just maybe, he has someone else he can count on. One word: fealty. This fic, despite its brevity, is so intense and powerful regarding how much Akira and Makoto are determined to never leave each other’s side and protect the other no matter what. It made my heart painfully dance.
- When the morning comes. by Discontinuous Qualia (Sechzehn) (G) | Royal | shuake | one shot Ren chases after Goro and convinces him to stay. A classic 2/2 fic to exorcise pain with other pain – but with a more positive outlook. A delicate mood and wonderful dialogues paired with a super on point characterization.
- quantum + dead photon by so_soft_boy, ymirjotunn (E) | shuake | one shot The interrogation room never goes in the same way – and neither Goro nor Akira can make it out of it unscathed. A pair of beautiful, complementary one shots – each one with a pov – that explore NG+ themes in the interrogation room, with physics metaphors, tons of ugly and conflicted feelings, graphic depictions of violence and most importantly, whump.
- The Ties That Bind by eyrist (M) | shuake | 3 chapters, finished The red string of fate can be a romantic concept, even a bit corny. And sometimes, it can feel like a noose around your neck. Speaking of P5 vanilla canon, I’ve always thought about shuake as something burning, raw, and passionate. Even destructive: a relationship that leaves both part with ugly scars and broken hearts (and not just figuratively). This fic is a wonderful character study that perfectly follows this concept – with the red string serving as a unifying thread, both metaphorically and physically.
- you've got me seeing through different eyes by futuresoon (T) | Royal | shuake | one shot Akira accepts Maruki’s deal and starts to live through his new reality. Nothing goes as planned: it goes in the worst possible way. A very nice way to experiment with unexpressed potential within canon. I’ve got chills reading this until the end. You’d think it will go in a certain way, and you know it’ll feel bittersweet. But then it does worst. And it hits home.
- tomorrow (B-SIDE) by relationshipcrimes (T) | Royal | shuake | one shot | with an A-SIDE more bittersweet Akira and Goro reunites in a park after three years. Three years of waiting, struggling with life going on, bottling up feelings, and doubts. How will it end? This piece has an amazing take on Akira’s life and coping methods post canon. Thinking about him waiting for Goro is great in theory, but how does it work in practice? This is what this fic tries to answer – right, in my opinion. It takes its time, focuses a lot on introspection, but without being boring to read.
- stay with me by shouldbeworking (E) | Royal | shuake | one shot Ren is on the train, ready to go home and somehow return to his normal life. But nothing can be normal again, and surely not after helping a very alive Goro Akechi escape his chasers on said train. I think one of the main themes of this fic is shuake’s never-ending game of hide and seek, of chasing each other again and again until either one of them disappear, or the other one makes him stay. Will it work? Who knows.
I WISH I WROTE THIS These works are so powerful they in some way shaped my viewing of the characters or made me reflect on my writing and what I wanted to communicate in my own stories.
- thirty-five ways he said 'i love you.' (E) | shuake | series | 32 works, unfinished A series of short one-shots exploring Akira and Goro’s relationship during canon, with some occasional divergencies. One of my all-time favorites – the introspection and angst are just too on point. The characterization is wonderful, and the mood is constantly tense, both for good and bad. It’s a pity it’s been left unfinished, but I highly advise that you read it nonetheless, because it’s more than a gem: it’s a little diamonds mine.
- to err is human by Katraa (E) | shuake | one shot “There’s a bomb, ticking away, set to explode – or perhaps implode? – in less than a month and yet he can’t help himself from wanting to play with the wires.” Honestly, this piece has everything I want and yearn for from P5 vanilla shuake. Danger, pretention, sexual tension, banter, philosophy quoting, complicated emotions, playing with fire. Everything mixes so well, I’m astonished. If I were to summarize pre-Royal shuake in a fic, it would be this one.
- the fishes swim left and right, thoughts of you swim in my head till midnight by Ciasquare (T) | shuake | one shot Akira is back to his normal life in Inaba and he can’t stop dreaming of Goro. But are they just dreams? A 5+1 fic with a nailed open ending. The concept is fascinating, the dreams are powerful and the characterization is so on point, I found myself wanting to hug the author.
- With the Intent to Kill by The_Pen_Dragon (E) | Royal | shuake | one shot Rank 8 of the Justice confidant, taken to the extreme. The tension in this could be literally cut with a knife – which of course happens. It’s a perfectly crafted perspective of rank 8 by Goro’s pov, which means additional angst, denial of feelings and internal turmoil.
- anywhere, i would have followed you by shantealeaves (M) | Royal | shuake | one shot Akira Kurusu has escaped death countless times. His life doesn’t deserve to end due to terminal illness. Honestly. This isn’t a "personal" favorite and I probably won’t ever be able to read this again because I discovered I might have a trigger for stories centering around extremely debilitating or life-threatening illnesses or physical conditions. But this indeed is one the most powerful, tearing, moving fics I’ve ever read not only in this fandom but in my entire career as a reader. If you want to cry, or if you want to learn how to punch people in the stomach with emotions, read this. It deserves all the praise it’s getting.
IF YOU HAVE TO READ JUST ONE [trope] FIC, READ THIS Recommendations for various tropes I’m usually not a fan of, but which are masterfully explored in these fics.
- Bless him with blood by songofproserpine (E) | shuake – vampires | one shot “Life begins in blood. All life begins ugly and raw—savage. Beauty only comes by living.” A vampire fic with a dark atmosphere and a beautiful style that perfectly depicts the rise (fall?) of Akira following vampire!Goro.
- a fish hook. an open eye. by MistressEast (E) | Royal | shuake – a/b/o | one shot (now with a sequel!) A status effect makes alpha!Akira goes into a rut – which catastrophically causes omega!Goro to follow. ‘Shadows made them do it,’ but to the extreme. This fic has an impressive amount of worldbuilding for something so strongly centered around porn, it’s astonishing. And it’s maybe one of the most IC fics I’ve ever read with strongly possessive behaviors and Goro overthinking.
- a desire born from the heart by heyitsmemi (E) | shuake – persona sex | 3 chapters, finished Akira and Goro must face what they feel for each other – and this time, they cannot look away. A highly symbolic and metaphorical fic that nailed a perfect combination of smut, character study, introspection, and feelings.
- Spectral Thief by cinereous (E) | Akira-centric – selfcest, horror | 4 chapters, finished Akira is left alone in Tokyo and has to deal with… whatever lurks in the shadows of Leblanc’s attic. A beautifully painful experience to read – the fear is real, and Akira’s breakdown(s) hit right in the spot. It’s the kind of personal and existential horror that would make a masterpiece of an indie game in the right hands. I’d gladly pay to see Red Candle bring this fic to life.
- More Brainwashed Than A Cult Member by heavymoons (E) | Royal | shuake – Marin Karin sex | one shot Akira gets brainwashed in Maruki’s Palace, and no healing item seems to have effect – leaving Goro with a moral choice to make. The thing I find the most interesting in this fic is how deeply Goro’s conflicted feelings are analyzed. This work has a very nice amount of introspection for a sort of pwp with a dubious consent tag (which… may or may not get subverted near the end, who knows). It’s a lot more than “healing is not working we have no other choice,” it rather focuses on the moral nuances of it all – and how much Goro wants Akira, deep down. Which leads to a lot of ugly feelings and raw emotions that are just so spot on.

Book 3, Chapter 2: The Headband
In case you’re finding this post just by browsing the tags I’ve used for this post, this is the Watchathon, a blog where I’m hoping to watch an episode of a TV show every weekday, with a short blog post where I write down my thoughts as I watch. Each new thought starts with a hyphen and a bolded first word.
- Like so. Now that the introductions are over with, here’s my thoughts on The Headband:
- So, my sister walked into my room just as the episode was starting, when Zuko was in his bed with his eyes closed. I whispered to her “Shh, be quiet, Zuko is sleeping. Or be as loud you like, I’m pretty sure he’s a heavy sleeper.” Then, even though she knew I was joking, she actually did speak quietly until she left. Just a little funny story there.
- I’m guessing it’s the prison that Zuko walked over to. I wonder if he was considering talking to his uncle?
- I honestly forgot about how Aang could use Airbending and Waterbending to make clouds. Pretty clever to use it as a disguise while they’re in the Fire Nation.
- I never thought that Katara would be so eager about stealing a disguise... Though, I can’t really blame her, these are some nice-looking clothes, they need a disguise to help their survival...
- And also Aang after a second to think it over.
- I like how the Gaang’s finding a disguise is treated like hasty clothes shopping.
- I like when Aang shows that he’s from a century ago. In this case, outdated ideas of what would help him to blend in at the Fire Nation.
- Feels kinda weird to see Aang in a classroom.
- On Ji’s real sweet. One of those character where I understand why she’s a one shot, but I do wish she could’ve made a return at some point, even just as a cameo.
- I like how Aang is so nice to even the bully character.
- I’ll never get sick of Sokka’s OTT reactions to Aang’s latest antics.
- I guess I was right on the money with where Zuko was heading, and why he was heading there. Getting into spoiler stuff, but this hits different knowing that Iroh isn’t at all angry at Zuko, just sad that he decided his honor was that much more important to him than his uncle.
- I like scenes like this where a student ends up knowing more about a topic than the teacher. It’s a fun way of showing a character’s intelligence, or (like in this case) that they have knowledge almost no one else has.
- I didn’t think that the Fire Nation would be anti-dancing... In a few centuries, are they gonna have Marching In Place Quietly With The Stars?
- Finally we’ve reached the scene that autoplays as a preview every time I’m about to select Avatar on Netflix.
- Y’know, it just occurred to me... I don’t think we’ve gotten the bully’s name yet. Should I just call him Nameless Bully?
- Ah, and here we see the first appearance of Avatar: The Last Airbender’s true hero: Wang Fire! A warrior so awesome that they had no choice but to reduce his screentime just so he wouldn’t overshadow our “hErO” Aang.
- But let us not forget to honor his kind and gracious wife Sapphire Fire, as radiant and brilliant as the gemstone she was named after!
- Part of me’s worried that I could take this schtick too far... But most of me is wondering, is that even possible?
- The scariest thing about Azula is that no matter what she says or does, you just know there’s some kind of ulterior motive behind it. But you can almost never figure it out immediately.
- The greatest tool of revolution: Secret dance parties!
- I like this scene of Aang teaching the Fire Nation kids about dancing, and the way that their ancestors danced a century ago.
- I wonder if Iroh had hope for a second that Zuko had changed, only to have that hope dashed once it became apparent that Zuko was only worried about what would happen if Aang survived.
- And Aang even taught the Fire Nation kids an Earth Kingdom dance! Maybe this dance party will make a change to how these kids see the world, even if it’s a small change.
- Dancing is not just frowned upon in the Fire Nation, it’s a criminal offense!
- So that’s his name: Hide!
- I like the “I Am Spartacus” moment with the schoolkids covering for Aang. It’s really nice and wholesome.
- I’ve gotta wonder what these kids’ reactions will be when the mysterious kid who introduced them to dancing and then disappeared without a trace turns out to be the Avatar?
- And we end on an early bird cameo of Combustion Man.

(abandoned) it’s late, just stay
john wick / reader genre: sugar daddy au rating: general, mature themes words: 2.4k warnings: sugar daddy relationship, slight john wick 2 spoilers i guess a/n: this 1 is for me. i wrote her in a heat,,,she’s literally not finished. but im adding her to my online portfolio 4 the memories. Also fyi the profile was made before i indulged in seeking arrangements and as a sugar baby i know that ur not allowed to mention 90% of brooklynbaby’s bio in ur bio but who cares man this is fiction and im making it up
At that, she tossed her head back with a laugh and leant forward. “And since when are sugar babies a relationship status?”
Sometimes, John doesn’t really know how he gets himself into awkward situations.
The first few occasions, he figured it was merely a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. While, actually, this always worked out in his favour, John began to notice that it was more frequent that he ended up at a bar with some people he didn’t really know, or being invited to a baby shower as the date of a woman he had never even met before. Granted, John enjoyed company whenever he could get it, and whenever it avoided conflict; however socialism has never been his strongest asset. No, he simply prefers silent gestures or glances across rooms, ‘eye conversations’ where he says hello and nothing else for the remainder of the evening.
“You just need to loosen up a bit,” is what Addy had told him, whilst slipping him a glass of straight Bourbon. It had been a relatively quiet evening in the Continental, and just when John thought he could have five minutes of peace and quiet, Addy has slipped in his line of sight. “You know, go out. Make new friends.”
“You’re my friend,” John replied. He made no room to elaborate on that statement, swallowing the contents of the drink and pushing it back to her with a short nod. She sighed and rolled her eyes, doing her job.
“No, you know what you really need?” He didn’t answer, glancing at her through his hair as she filled his drink and rested her weight on her elbows. Instantly, John didn’t like the feeling in his stomach when Addy raised her eyebrows suggestively, tugging on her bottom lip with newfound excitement: “I think you need to get laid.”
And when John scoffed with humour, she tried again, “and not like, laid as in you have a one night stand. No- hear me out, John! You should invest in a sugar baby. You know, someone you can spend time with when you’re not doing the dirty work for everybody else. It’s fun, and frisky, and also means you can start spending some of the millions you have stashed somewhere not being used.”
She tutted like a scolding mother, “Selfish boy.” Addy then smiled, “Maybe instead of retirement, what you really need is something to help you unwind.”
John scoffed, gulping back the Bourbon. “I’m married.”
At that, she tossed her head back with a laugh and leant forward. “And since when are sugar babies a relationship status?”
That’s really all the thinking he had done on the subject of John- John fucking Wick- investing in a sugar baby. He simply took it in stride, almost complimented by the assumption that he was attractive and rich enough to have someone leaning on him for money and sex, and stored it away for future thought when he was lost and drunk. John never actually considered the possibility of “putting his bills to good use” until fucking Santino D’Antonio decided to light a bonfire inside his house. Having lost virtually everything related to Helen, he found himself back at the Continental, back to listening to Addy sympathetically give her condolences and five seconds later, introducing him to Seeking Arrangements.
John doesn’t know why he’s doing this, staring at the laptop screen that smiles at him. For circumstances, Addy had loaned him her laptop for the evening he spends at the Continental, and he’s too busy browsing the elaborately made profiles that he barely registers the fact that he is still wearing his suit. He pulls at the cuffs of his blazer and is midway through taking it off when he stumbles across a profile- one of which is oddly amusing- titled brooklynbaby. He racks his mind for the reference but can’t seem to place it.
“A sugar baby suggests that I sleep with them, and as I said,” John had mentioned back in the bar, “I’m married.”
Addy had grabbed his hands and groaned, “Look- you might surprise yourself. And, I’m not suggesting that you throw your wife away for somebody new. I’m just saying you need to...make use of yourself. Honestly, you’re too sexy to be stored away like this. Most sugar babies are dumb and unobservant, they won’t even know who you are.”
brooklynbaby makes an adorably hilarious first impression, and John is hesitant to browse her profile. If he wanted to “make use of himself” by investing all of his personal time into somebody who in truth wanted him for his dick and his bank balance, then it needed to be somebody at least near to his wavelength. Somebody who was smart, but clueless at the same time, and somebody who was the complete opposite of Helen. The last thing he needed on top of a handful of a baby was the guilt of moving on. But still, even when he pinned her tab and returned to scrolling through the profiles, John realised that most sugar babies were simply trolls hidden behind pretty pictures, or girls who wanted money for pleasure and not for need.
He went back to brooklynbaby. Three times. Three times, before he pinched the bridge of his nose, muttering a quiet, “Oh, fuck it,” and favoriting her account, and pressing to send a message.
Even online, John was never great with words. He typed, and backspaced, and typed again, trying to come up with something interesting to make up for the bland profile he made around thirty minutes ago.
From: johnwick So. You like dogs?
If Addy were here, she would have slapped him.
Almost immediately after it sends, John lets out a frustrated noise and tears his gaze away from the screen. Dating just wasn’t like how it was when he met Helen. Why did everything have to be so complicated, and mysterious, and why the hell does he even have to waste his money on somebody when he could be saving this money to eventually, whenever the day comes, retire? John wrestles with the dilemma of deleting the whole account when a notification bell rings through the laptop speakers.
From: brooklynbaby yes, I love dogs!!! :D (typing) do you have a dog?
John breathes a sigh of relief.
From: johnwick Yes. I do.
From: brooklynbaby oh, great. :) (typing)
John’s leg begins to bounce quickly, the table wavering with the glass on top, like an earthquake. Suddenly, brooklynbaby stops typing and John stills. Why did she stop? Did he do something wrong? Honestly, women are so hard to please nowadays.
From: brooklynbaby want to be my sugar daddy?
Never mind.
From: johnwick I would.
From: brooklynbaby cool
Neither him or brooklynbaby says anything for a few moments, and John doesn’t notice. After-all, he is still a working man, busy with life and revenge and trying to stay alive for more than three seconds. When he goes back to the laptop and sees no reply, he frowns.
From: johnwick I am sorry. I really don’t know what I’m doing. What am I supposed to say?
He makes a mental reminder to have words with Addy later.
From: brooklynbaby /(*u*)/ you’re cute we could make dinner reservations and talk over terms if you’d like!!! i say reservations because they’re fancy and if anything goes wrong, we can pretend we’re… business partners? discussing business?
Without even really realising, John finds himself laughing shortly, settling back into the chair. All of this feels weird, as in typing to a stranger he’s planning to spend his money on and occasionally fuck. John quickly revisits her profile and spends four minutes analysing her profile picture. If this is her, then she’s really very beautiful. A steal.
From: johnwick When are you free for dinner?
From: brooklynbaby hmm well i’m dogsitting tomorrow, but i can be free for the day after!!!! is that okay ^_^
From: johnwick That would be fine. [Address] at 7pm, does that work for you?
brooklynbaby pauses.
From: brooklynbaby omg am i gonna have to dress fancy?
From: johnwick Don’t feel pressured. I only own black.
From: brooklynbaby well….guess i’ll bring out like one of my old uni party dresses :( but you have to promise not to judge me!!!
John laughs again. At some point during the evening, he ends up with a planned dinner reservation at one of the most expensive restaurants in Brooklyn, and he’s also 2 grand poorer thanks to the generous donation in brooklynbaby’s bank account for a nice evening outfit.
When John returns the laptop to Addy the following morning, he was admittedly expecting the rant that followed. She had glared at the laptop being handed back over the bar and refused to serve him until he came up with a reasonably valid excuse as to why he wasn’t putting himself out there for a bit of company. John had blinked with an unimpressed look and drummed his fingers.
“I have dinner reservations with someone tomorrow at 7pm. Also- can I have a drink?”
But of course, with work being as tedious as ever and with his whole day being completely ruined by a blood stained shirt and poor room service for the first time in his many years of frequenting the Continental, John didn’t amuse himself with brooklynbaby until he logged onto the site on his phone, and saw that she had messaged thrice during the day. He almost felt guilty, until he saw a string of numbers at the end of the last message. He deemed it less necessary to read her above messages and instead went right to texting.
brooklynbaby ok. so should i just ask for mr john wick when i get to this restaurant??? sorry for so many texts im just kinda nervous
me Yes. I booked under my name and I will be waiting for you when you arrive. Why are you nervous? Didn’t you ask me to be here?
brooklynbaby well if we’re going to be technical then YOU asked me to dinner first :P and im nervous because i have nooo idea who you are send a picture?
John sank into bed.
me Maybe I like the element of surprise.
brooklynbaby seems a lil unfair that you get to see me but i dont get to see you :( ive seen ur dog before you thats saying something
me You could have used any image. If we’re going to be technical, I don’t even know your name, or if that is really you in the image.
John really hadn’t been expecting a full blown nude image at 4:15pm in the afternoon, but he will admit that it was nevertheless what he needed to break some steam. He had arrived at the restaurant twenty minutes earlier than expected, but that’s okay, Mr Wick. Right this way! Now that he was sitting here, at an empty table overlooking Brooklyn and the lights, with an already ordered bottle of wine, John could understand and relate to the first date nerves. He hadn’t felt this way in a long time. Not since-
brooklynbaby uhhh im kind of here like ten minutes early should i wait outside for you :3
He laughs, mostly to himself.
me I’m already up here. I ordered a rosé, is that alright?
brooklynbaby YES IM RUNNING
And, surprising himself also, John had clammed up and reached for his glass. Thankfully, the owner of this restaurant knew John by face and order, because, after-all, this had been his go-to with Helen. These days, he doesn’t have time to go out to new places and eat new things, and so had panicked, and picked a place with sentimental value, and a history of good food. He gulped back his glass of Bourbon and waited until the door at the other side of the room opened meekly, and he tried to appear vacant as the waiter led a woman across the room and towards him.
“Your date, Mr Wick.”
He left curtly and brooklynbaby followed his body as he left, her feet firmly glued to the floor as her head looked back over her shoulder. John took this as an opportunity to look at her body, covered in a beautiful dress he felt proud of paying for. Finally, brooklynbaby looked towards him and paused, observing him and his clearly surprising appearance. John then remembered the gash on his cheekbone and the way he probably looked very off-putting with an unshaven face and long hair, but brooklynbaby smiled softly and raised her brows, beating him to helping her in her chair as she quickly sat down and looked at his glass.
“How did you know I liked beards?”
John didn’t say anything for a moment. “I didn’t.”
brooklynbaby rolled her eyes with a grin. “Of course you didn’t.” She looked up, then, properly taking in his face. John did the same, looking at every feature present and coming to the quick conclusion that yes, she was definitely the woman in the pictures, and yes, she was one of the most gorgeous humans he had ever seen on planet Earth since Helen herself.
“You’re not what I expected,” she said honestly. “But, more than my expectations. I don’t believe I’ve really introduced myself- I’m Y/N. Y/N L/N.”
He tried it out in his head. Y/N. Y/N L.N, Y/N L/N, Y/N Wick-
“John,” he replied and she sniggered and rested her chin in her palms.
“You’re seriously so handsome,” she complimented. “Are you sure you’re not married, or something?”
Her gaze panned to his hands where she noticed the wedding band, and for a moment, she hesitated. John wasn’t ashamed of the ring, nor embarrassed to be seen wearing it. He toyed with it on his finger, looking at her from across the table. “It’s complicated.”
Y/N nodded meekly. “I see.” She cleared her throat, “divorce? Planned divorce? Affair?”
“No, I’m widowed,” he tried out a joke, but she only looked more uncomfortable. Her mouth gaped and she fumbled for words.
“Oh, John, I’m really sorry- no, really, I’m so sorry,” she stumbled, and John watched her carefully across the table. “God, how fucking insensitive. Sorry, I guess that just. Wow, that never really crossed my mind. That sucks, I’m sorry.”
“It’s in the past,” John said, finding finality in that sentence. “I’m trying to move on from it.”
Y/N nodded sympathetically. “No, yeah, wow, I get it. Completely. I...hope I live up to great expectations, then?”
John smiled and looked past her, noticing the waiter rounding the corner with the bottle of rose. “You’re getting there, Miss L/N.”

Parties, dances, formal attire. The annual Marine Ball. Though Drake had surely been accustomed to high society due to his Marine affiliations, he never cared for such lavish activities. With an aloof demeanor and two left feet, it was well evident among his comrades that he was far from the life of the party. Still, he made his appearance known at every tedious event. He took his job seriously after all.
All things considered, one can imagine the utter panic he endured when the third woman of the night caught his eye and made her way towards him. In the brief seconds it took for her to approach him, he had already constructed a mental list of countless benign excuses that would be reasonable enough to reject her without hurting her feelings. It took him some time, all thanks to many tears and a few too many slaps to the face, to figure out how to achieve such gentle refusals.
His first excuse was locked and loaded, equipped with a follow up, just in case. However, even as the words were placed on the tip of his tongue, all things left when she pleaded with him.
“Dance with me. Please.”
His eyes widened down at her. This was entirely different from any dance offer he had received. He was well known to dismiss even the most pitiful of beggars, but something about her plea seemed desperate.
“Ma’am, I’m not sure you-” He began, halting when a slur of what was assumedly her name, pierced through the chattering crowd. “Miss (Name)! Playing hard to get I see! Don’t worry, I’ll find you. And when I do, youwilldance with me.”
She hid her face in embarrassment, eyes bulging as she pleaded with the Marine once more. He internally sighed, why me?, but when the drunken man had found her and was rushing towards her, Drake acted on instinct. Placing his hand gently at the small of her back, he guided her through the tight crowd towards the other end of the room. He cringed at the man’s whines, having half a mind to swiftly knock the brute out once he heard some derogatory remarks escape his lips, but getting her to safety was paramount.
They found themselves rushing out onto the balcony, far from the bustling crowd and entirely out of sight of that wretched man pursuing her so dangerously. Before joining her outside, Drake had relayed the information to one of his comrades who stood on guard at the balcony’s door, encouraging him to keep an eye out for the pervert and to remove him from the party if he made any attempts to follow the pair outside.
“Thank you.” She breathed as she sat along the bench, “Though, a dance in the other room would have sufficed.”
He stood in front of her awkwardly, crossing his arms in front of his chest, “Miss, I have to be honest with you. I’m not much of a dancer.”
She giggled, and an unfamiliar sensation swelled in his chest, “Oh, I’ve assumed as much, Mr. Dory. Why else would you reject all of the pretty admirers? Though, I believe the defaulted rumor among them is that you swing for…”
He stiffened, ears growing warm, “Drake is fine. I don’t care much for rumors.”
She hissed as she removed her shoes and rubbed at her heels, “What’s your rank, Drake, if I may ask?”
“Rear admiral, ma’am.”
“A handsome rear admiral who can’t dance? Well, I guess we can't all be perfect, hm?”
“I don’t need flattery to do my job, Miss.”
“(Name).” She corrected with a roll of her eyes.
“Pardon?”
“It’s (Name). We’re on a first name basis, yes? And you don’t have to refer to me so highly. I’m not like the nobility that swoon at your feet.” She ran her fingers through her hair, “I’m just the caterer’s daughter. Only here to encourage guests to dine on our food. Unfortunately, however, it would seem some men interpret simple acts of kindness as desperation for their affections.”
“Only pathetic ones.” Drake scoffed.
“Let me guess. You’re not like other men?” (Name) laughed loudly this time, and if it weren’t for the sudden rush of embarrassment he’d felt, he’d be captivated by the way she glowed under the moonlight, “Haven’t heard that one before.”
She was entirely correct. (Name) was far from being similar to the other women who more than likely only wanted a dance with the rear admiral for bragging rights. Even if he’d had few formal conversations with the gaggle of swooners, none would dare challenge a man of his rank as she did. It was entertaining, to say the least.
“How can I prove myself then?” He questioned aloud. The teasing tone laced in his words caught the both of them by surprise. He wanted to hurl himself off the balcony, until her reassuring smile offered him solace.
(Name) pretended to be in deep thought for a moment, and Drake grew increasingly anxious as the seconds passed, “Prove to me that you really can’t dance. I find it hard to believe the gods blessed you with those legs and no rhythm.”
It was his turn to laugh this time; genuine laughter. She was taken aback and silently admired the music of his amusement. Even the guard who stood watch outside the door stiffened in disbelief at hearing the typically stoic Drake laugh so heartily.
“I’m afraid you might be setting yourself up for disappointment. Or perhaps you wish to have me step on your toes?”
“It’s alright. You can step on my toes as much as you want.” Her tone was serious now as he opened the door for her, “Just keep me safe, please.”
He swallowed hard, feeling underprepared for what he was getting himself into, “I think I can manage as much.”
They made way to the dance floor, Drake nervous as ever underneath the burning stares of the party guests. Yet as he took her gloved hand in his, a brilliant, incandescent glow seemed to illuminate his entire body at the intimate contact. Her eyes held his and what with the warm smile she offered him, he had briefly pondered if she had felt that sudden jolt of electricity as well.
How’s one to know when you’ve met the one?
Drake couldn’t help but wonder as he danced with this alluring stranger, the caterer’s beautiful daughter. Because as she spun around the room with him, catching him when he’d trip over her dress with reassuring glances and a too-forgiving smile, he couldn’t help but imagine their lives together, a reel of redamancy.
They’d continue spinning around the room, unbothered by the wandering eyes and hushed whispers. She’d hold him steady, eyes twinkling under the light of the chandelier as she laughed, scrunching up her nose and throwing her head back without a care in the world, making him fall harder with each passing second. He’d pull her closer, an evident blush blooming on the both of their cheeks at the contact, further deepening as they realize they are one of the only few stragglers left well after the party is over.
He’d walk her home, picking off a stray flower when she wasn’t looking, offering it to her as a parting gift, a thank you for keeping him company through the night. She’d smile, wider than he had seen that night, a smile he wanted to keep on her face forever. As their hands touch, he’d bring hers up to his lips, placing a chaste kiss along the satin fabric covering her knuckles. Another parting gift, another thank you - a subtle invitation for more, if she’d have him.
He’d pray that she couldn’t see the nervous quake that shook his body, how he was dying to get this right, but she would, of course she would. She was incredibly perceptive, and that’s one of the wondrous things about (Name) that made him fall, after all. Yet, she wouldn’t say a word, just smile and laugh as she hesitantly closed the door, hurrying up to her bedroom window to call out his name like it was her new favorite word as she waved a final goodbye for the night. He’d wave back, butterflies fluttering madly like he was a teenager all over again. That feeling would make home in his stomach until he laid his head on his pillow, dreams painted with her beaming smile glowing under the chandelier light as he held her close once more. His pillow would suffice for the time being.
He’d visit her father’s restaurant, casually of course; purely coincidental. Yet as with all blooming romances, random happenstances turned to every other day, then quickly to every evening after he’d finish his paperwork for the day, and would ultimately result in him asking her father for permission to court her. She’d laugh that million-beli laugh, mocking him for being so old-fashioned, while he mocked her in turn for being so contrarian. His Marine buddies would pick and tease, but as he arrived at each dinner party, each ball, each and every event with her by his side, he would only take it all in stride. He’d watch as she got on with his friends, how they’d gang up to make fun of him, but he could care less as her enjoyment, how she melded so perfectly with his lifestyle, reigned supreme. He’d know in that moment, that the shape of her was the missing piece in his heart all this time.
They’d promenade through town, arms linked as he walked tall and dignified, herself excitable as she yanked him in every direction to browse shops and visit with the coastal townsfolk. They’d believe no one had ever seen a love as pure as theirs as they interlaced their fingers, Drake never quite getting used to how her small hand fit perfectly in his, all the while garnering a few jealous glances from men and women alike. Neither of them would pay the gawkers any mind, and as each gentle embrace from her ignited his skin to the warmest degrees, the possibility of being loved in return was no longer improbable in his mind.
She’d be the one to initiate their first kiss, stealing his affection and attention when he’s rambling about nervously. He’d curse himself for not being braver, but with lots of encouragement from her and plenty of practice, he’d soon find a newfound confidence that resulted in a struggle to keep his lips to himself. Yet not without blushing madly and a few nosebleeds here and there, of course. They’d steal kisses from each other any chance they got, bumping into things and laughing quietly as their lips chased each other fervently in the privacy of an empty shop’s dressing room or the storage room in her father’s restaurant. Drake wasn’t one to break the rules, but all sensibility left him when her lips were plastered against his own.
It would be so much more than her lips. Her eyes, her hands, her hair, her legs; every inch of her was intoxicating and there seemed to be no peak to the love he had for her in every sense he was familiar with. That would be until one night when the two found themselves desperate for something bigger than what they knew, bodies tangled in heated passions, and the wild beating of their hearts and breathy pants filling the empty room. He’d ask her countless times: “Are you sure?” “Is this okay?” “Do you want this?” “Is it really me you want?”
She’d laugh, placing shaky, gentle hands along his cheeks, and pulling him in for a searing kiss, “Yes, I want everything with you. It will always be you.”
They would make love that night, and Drake would have to fight back tears. Even after courting her for so long, he’d never experienced such tender touches and praises as these from her before. After years of abuse from his father, he had wondered if he was even worthy of gentle affections of any kind. He’d spent many years cold and alone, his training as a Marine only further icing over his stone heart. Yet she would see him, truly see him that night. The love that would reflect in the light of her eyes as she stared up at him, loving praises of his name and utter adoration for him spilling from her parted lips, her soft hands caressing his skin like he’d disappear if she’d let go - it would be pure heaven sent, and Drake would not help but bask in the love she offered him, biting his lips as he quietly sobbed into her skin as she slept peacefully beside him, holding him in her embrace.
He’d buy a ring the next day, ignoring the snickers and childish name-calling from his comrades. He’d ask her father once again for permission, this time to marry her, though at this point, Drake would be far removed from seeking approval. He’d propose to her on the balcony where they first met, and they’d wed later that season. They would build a home on the cliffside, facing the sea, in a quiet neighborhood not too far from base. They would share a beautiful domestic life together, a few pets and two kids bustling about in the yard. The townsfolk could only ever dream of having a life as perfect as theirs. Drake would practically thrive off of the jealousy, bragging endlessly about his wife and kids, keeping a framed picture of them on his desk, and making sure to tell any and every soul who entered his office random tidbits of a day in the life of the Drake family.
He could see her out in the yard, belly swollen with their third child, being pulled in every direction by their two little ones who looked so much like her, much to his endearment, and their dog running around. She’d wave him over when she’d catch him staring, his two baby dinos running toward him excitedly, yanking on his hands to bring him out into the yard to help catch fireflies. They’d laugh and chase each other around the yard, her smiling widely and whispering to him how great of a dad he is. He’d place his hand on her belly, content and full of love for his growing family, thanking whatever being was responsible for blessing him with the family he’s always wanted. He’d pull her close, gently of course, spinning her around the yard with confident legs, smiling cheesily as he asked her if he’s proven himself yet. She’d laugh that famous, knee-weakening laugh of hers, and reply -
“Drake?”
Head still fuzzy, he peered down at her, “Hmm?”
“You’ve been staring. Is there something on my face?”
Regaining his consciousness, he was struggling to remember where he was, “No. There’s not. I apologize, I- we- ”
“Sir, we’ve escorted the perpetrator from the ball. He has been arrested, so I assure you she will no longer be pursued.” An officer under Drake muttered in his ear. Drake stilled as the realization crashed over him like a tidal wave.
It wasn’t real? None of that was real?
(Name) looked up at him with questioning eyes, and he had to avert his own in order to avoid sinking into her depths once again, “Very well. Excellent work, officer.” The man saluted Drake before disappearing into the crowd.
Drake slowly turned to her, “It seems your stalker has been arrested, Miss. I’ll no longer be of any service to you.”
Her hands dropped from his shoulders along with her smile. The return of Miss breaking her heart piece by piece, “Oh, I see.”
He so desperately wanted to reach a hand out to stroke her cheek, encouraging her smile to return, but he didn’t actually know her like that. No matter how beautiful the fantasies he created in his head of their potential life together, in reality, he only knew this woman’s name. She would probably be appalled to know of the things he dreamt up of her, so Drake decided it’d be best for the both of them if he kept his distance.
“If you ever run into trouble with another man, please don’t hesitate to reach out to an officer. You’ll always be in good hands, I’ll make sure of that.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.” She replied dryly.
“Good night, Miss. I hope my company was not too bothersome.” He bowed to her. She quickly wiped at her eyes as he remained at half-back, averting her gaze when he rose up. As she struggled to look into his eyes, waiting, internally begging for him to say more, mentally pleading for him to stay, Drake took that as his cue to leave.
As he walked away from her, his mind, body, and soul screamed to run back to her, confess to her. But that would be insane right? He’d only met her tonight, how pathetic would he look to confess his heart out to a total stranger? It didn’t matter how her eyes offered him home, and in the mere minutes it took for them to share a dance, he effortlessly imagined their futures together; unconditional love shared between them in the purest forms. She'd surely think he was delusional, a creep. Just like the other guys.
To save himself the embarrassment, he concluded it to be just temporary infatuation, and he did not have the time to play with such trivial feelings. The coastal town Drake resided in would never get to see him helplessly in love with the caterer’s daughter, and his heart would only grow colder in (Name)'s absence. A heart befitting a pirate.

What if Ishimaru and Mondo had both survived the killing game?
So, at the beginning of this year (2019), I decided to embark in a different project: to write a full fanfiction surrounding a certain idea: “What if both of them had survived the killing game?”. The goal of this was to include Ishimaru, as well as Mondo, in the canon plot described by the games and anime (I still haven’t read the novels or the mangas) by creating an adventure surrounding them but also focused in points I wished I saw in Danganronpa. In other words, write about their character development, their relationship (yes, it was supposed to be mainly focused on Ishimondo as a couple, slowly blossoming their romance) but it was also an opportunity to write about tragedy and despair (I enjoy writing horror and angst). I won’t reveal any major spoilers (about my fanfiction) because I haven’t decided if I will continue to work on this. I have other tasks at hand that I need to prioritise. It was supposed to be a big project which I estimated to be longer than 100.000 words. [so far, I have only written over 13k with the 1st chapter still at the beggining, while the second one is already at the middle with over 10k words.]
The point of this post: since I don’t know if I continue this or not, I would love to share the best moments I have wrote so far (both humorous and romantic and I have decided to not share any gory/sad parts). I will give context for every part I share without giving too much details.
NOTE 1: The narrator tries to put themselves in the feet of the character they are focusing on. So, they also try to adopt their way of speech and attempt to convey their feelings facing the various occasions (for example: the narrator is more crude and sad when the character in focus is Mondo)
NOTE 2: English is not my first language. So I apologise for any mistakes found.
WARNING: HEAVY SPOILERS FOR DR1 AND SDR2.
1. “Hopes and Dreams”
Chapter: 1
Context: epilogue of DR1, looking at the metal gate that locked them inside the school, after defeating Junko.
The prospects of a new start were high amongst everyone. Makoto was experiencing a restraint holding his body, in other words, he felt tensed. Suddenly, the feel of warm leather touched his right palm. Kyoko had approached him and gently held his hand. She didn’t made eye contact however he appreciated her kind gesture. “You will not fight this battle alone.” Her speech motivated him and invoked a determined willpower from within which led him to furrow his eyebrows and squeeze her hand slightly harder. Amused by his mood changes, Kyoko tried but failed to conceal a shy, joyful smile.
Mondo walked closer to his brother and hurriedly hurled his long coat to fall over the other man’s shoulder and placed his right arm around Ishimaru’s neck to enfold him in a friendly embrace. That action startled Taka, who barely succeeded to sustain both feet on the ground after the abrupt (and clumsy) headlock. Along with an open, radiant grin, Mondo spoke: “Finally, we’re leaving this place!” Taka with his left hand reached and grabbed Mondo’s right wrist and looked back at him to return his kind words with a soft, resolved smile.
(...)
Byakuya continued to show suppression of his emotions to let his cruel image rule whatever perceptions he wishes others to have of him. Toko was next to him, fidgeting her fingers in embarrassment, peeking briefly at her “beloved” every two seconds with an odd, lustful desire on her face. Hiro, in the other hand, was screaming and crying in ecstasy, praying down in all fours, blessing the floor underneath and showing gratitude to whatever god (or alien) was looking after him.
2. “Lost happy memories”
Chapter: 1
Context: shortly after opening the door, the survivors stand inside the school grounds but outside the building, thinking what they should do next.
Even if any of the lost memories had still not returned, Mondo remembered fondly of the small time he spent with Chihiro during the game, it had been enough for him to develop feelings of admiration towards the geek. He reached out for a specific content that was sitting inside of his long coat’s left pocket (the same coat that continued to shelter Ishimaru’s shoulders) to purposely find the set of stolen photos that served as evidence in the former trial. He glanced upon one in particular. It starred him hugging fiercely both of the baseball star and the computer nerd – he was happy. No, he was extremely happy. Look at his wide, stupid grin; it was a smile that he didn’t recall to see a long time ago. He browsed through the rest and his suspicions were confirmed. He had good times at Hope Peak’s academy. However, the collection was limited. Did he get along with the rest of the class? Were he and Ishimaru as close as they currently are or were they fierce enemies fighting about dumb things? There were a few of him smiling towards Taka. More than anything, he wanted to believe in the happiest statements. He glanced through the same photographs once again but he ended up with the same doubts. He wished to rewind time and relive through those moments one last time where he could adopt the same idiotic, relaxed posture he seemed to use back then. At least, he wished the set included a photo of him with his kyoudai. Did they also resolve their differences with a competition in the sauna? He laughed at the thought.
Ishimaru sighed while pointing at one of them. “I will miss them as well.” At the end of his index finger was a photograph captured by Makoto: They were all posing for the picture, in their school uniforms, inside their classroom (well, almost everyone - of course, Leon insisted in wearing his version of a “uniform”). Mondo turned his head to encounter red eyes glazed, stained with tears that fought to break free. Wow, he really was kind. “We were lucky… I wonder if I truly deserve to be one of the s-”
Maybe too kind for his own good. “Shut it...” He caught Taka surprised with the response. “What would I do without my brother next to me?” Mondo added, wrapping an arm around the other’s neck in a friendly way.
“Maybe it’s true. I still have a lot to lecture you about the true value of effort!”
That was not what Mondo wanted to hear “Oi-“
“And, as selfish as this may sound, I am truly relieved you weren’t the one who passed away.”
Sadness and guilt. Mondo looked at Kiyotaka and remembered how those two words felt. Those were feelings Kiyotaka was over familiar with… hell, even he knew the despair hidden behind those terms.
Mondo had quickly learned to detect those moods. In fact, he was pretty good at it! And he was unnecessarily proud of that achievement... The diagnosis? Symptoms of a low self-esteem. He still hadn’t figure it out how to improve his condition however, he had to think about it later; right now, he wanted to focus in leaving this creepy-ass school.
“Movin’ on… What th’ hell is this creepy smile?” In a sloppy attempt to change the subject, he shoved the mentioned picture in Taka’s face.
“Whatever do you mean?”
“Look at your face! You look like those creepy clowns but without the makeup. So stiff and robotic and why are you behaving like a soldier?”
“Ghk- Are you saying I am ugly?”
“Wha-! Ah- Shit! no!” just like mentioned before… embarassingly sloppy “That’s not what I meant! I just wanted to tell ya’ that ya’ need to smile naturally and not force yourself just ta’ try to look good in th’ pictures because it has the opposite result you intended!” Mondo pulled off a different photograph. In this one, they were with their gym clothes, enjoying a P.E. class and Ishi was smiling brightly while cheering for their class “For example, in this ya’ look natural ‘cause ya’ got caught off guard!”
“Oh- I see.” Disappointment was felt in his voice.
“Well- See? It doesn’t mean yar ugly or nothi’, actually I think ya’ are very good lookin’. Ya’ just look funny in photographs. Not everyone is photogenic! ... (especially you…)” he babbles.
“Thank you.” Taka released a soft smile. The type of smile someone would like to record it with a photograph “You are a very kind man, kyoudai!”
And Mondo gets easily flustered with sweet (and cheesy) praises “Oh! Stop it! Don’t worry that pretty head of yours thinking that yer’ ugly or some bullshit like that…”
“I don’t usually concern myself over those issues. But I can’t stop myself from wondering if the lack of a more relaxed posture or behavior is the result of my failures at adopting socials skills.”
Mondo couldn’t deny it. He had the same opinion. He gave it a shrug in an attempt to give the conversation a closure.
“And if I may say so myself. I think you are a very attractive man yourself, Mondo.”
Mondo blushed even harder at the sudden compliment. And again, that cute smile… if only he could make him smile like that in photos…
“I know!! What if I force you to smile spontaneously?”
A small silence broke between the two “Force me to smile spontaneously?” Mondo cringed at the obvious mistake “Did you think that through?”
“Eh- shit! Atleast I am tryin’. I don’t see ya’ spittin’ any ideas!”
Taka chuckled. Mondo never considered to see Ishimaru laugh as he did right now. It created an ambience of comfort. It’s a new side that Mondo wished to see his brother with it in more occasions. “I will try to think of something too, then.”
Observing those two talking was Kirigiri; detective mode activated: the right index finger intertwined and resting on her chin as she would normally do whenever she found herself immersed deep in her thoughts. “Those two seem to be in a good mood. It’s good to have someone to rely on.”
“Well, I consider myself lucky too. After all, I am the ultimate lucky student if I have you backing me up.”
That was… unexpected. Was he trying to be smooth, flirty or just kind? One look at his facial expression: huge smile, eyebrows tense, shoulders determined. He was definately not trying to be flirty but that comment was very effective. She turned around, flushed.
3. “Makoto, the servant”
Chapter: 2
Context: daily life of Makoto in the Future Foundation.
Makoto had woken up with a tedious mood. He checked his alarm clock and groaned… 4 a.m., “Great!” He said before slamming the snooze button and slumping back into the flat, old pillow. He blamed Togami for that. The man continued to impose him waking up at ridiculous hours to perform the most preposterous tasks. To be honest, he sometimes felt to be Togami’s pet or worse… a servant. He cringed at the idea and quickly dismissed such unwelcomed thoughts to not further the cranky mood he was in.
“Peasant, I will need my coffee at exactly 65ºC (150ºF) with just a sniff of cinnamon or I’ll have you thrown into the dungeon. Naegi, you tell them the answer!” He adjusted his imaginary glasses, pointing forcefully to a random nearby object while attempting to copy Togami’s presumptuous act with an over exaggerated high-pitched voice. “Makoto, that was not what I wanted y-you to t-tell… t-them.“ …but he merely ended in chuckles in the middle of the last one, ridiculing his own failed attempts.
He pushed the sheets to one side and hopped off out of bed. Imitating Togami would always lighten his mood. He grabbed his phone to see what horrifying tasks awaited him that day…
4. “Reunion”
Chapter: 2
Context: Mondo was part of the 2nd division (army) while Ishimaru belonged to the 14th division. Mondo was a soldier, facing wars in different points of the world; while Ishimaru worked in Future Foundation’s headquarters, safe from any danger. This was not their first reunion but it was the one where they spent the most time apart. The location of the reunion was in a cafeteria inside FF.
At the end of the corridor, he rested his hands over the knees to normalize his respiratory rate. One mental reminder to himself was to put his exercise in order! Those sleepless nights and postponing his exercise regime were clearly affecting his stamina. Though, he would have to worry about that later. Still panting, he recomposed to an upright stance to meet the single entrance of the beautiful building where Mondo awaited him. The smell of freshly baked buns was causing his stomach to start rumbling. He touched the glass door but didn’t push it to open. Instead he looked through the stained glass and tried to spot him. Shaky breaths were quickly turned into condensation whenever these brushed over the surface of the glass, defocusing the once clear image and forcing Kiyotaka to clean the droplets with his right sleeve. It had been wise to look for him behind the entrance door. It avoided a clumsy search inside the cafeteria for anyone to watch and whisper. He sensed something was beating fast inside of him. He confirmed that his heart was racing when he placed a hand close to his chest. Why did he feel so nervous?
The cafeteria was still pretty empty at this time of the day but a few people were starting to fill the empty chairs and placing their trays on top of the metallic round tables to start enjoying their meals. Loud laughter and loud chatter slowly scattered across the space, too much to his annoyance. He looked at his right, straight to his usual table. It was almost hidden by a load-bearing wall, away from the restless crowd and at the same time, closer to the landscape he so enjoyed. That blooming tree filled his morning with color and energy and made him believe that he could endure another harsh, boring day. Darn, someone was already occupying that… spot. Wait… sun-kissed muscles, different uniform (if not mistaken, he recognized it to be from the 2nd division), bleached long hair… That was Mondo right?
“Mondo.” he whispered only letting himself to hear before opening the door. The smile vanished in a brief second after he noticed bruises, scars and some bandages covering his best friend. Mondo turned his head around almost unconsciously to the scraping sound that the front door’s metallic base did over the tile floor, a common sound that repeated every time someone moved it to open.
Not five seconds passed when a very trembling Ishimaru had his arms around him. Mondo felt a stream of warm tears running loose in his cheeks, damping the collar of his t-shirt. Taka was crying, of course. Gently, Mondo folded his arms around the other’s midsection, pulling him to his lap to allow his forehead to drown in Taka’s neck, surrendering to the embrace.
The comments mocking the odd pair suddenly reverberated through the room, filling the air of not-so-sneaky murmurs. Without separating himself from the warmth radiated from Taka’s right shoulder, Mondo rotated his head, locking eyes with the few smug fuckers. A narrow purple iris shined in contempt out of a squinted corner of his left eye. Some deviated his looks, frighten by the former delinquent’s cold stare, while the boldest ones maintained the glare beside a derisive smile, maliciously enjoying the scene.
Yet, Taka was only focused in who held him; giving minimal concern to his surroundings. “Without hearing from you, I thought you were gone for good!” Hell, he didn’t even seem to notice the bastards around them! He only knew how his arms trembled and how his eyes hurt, overdriven with emotions.
Taka shifted to close the embrace even tighter, to reduce any amount of space that still remained between the two. The strong dedication put in those words chocked whatever sickening feeling Mondo was struggling with. Kiyotaka cherishing him was the remedy he needed to immediately light his mood and now, it was his turn to return the favor. Mondo moved one hand to ruffle Taka’s soft hair, while the left rubbed his back, working in tandem. Whatever it was, the affection was soothing the other’s tears. Mondo gave him time to compensate the time they had been away from each other so this position lasted for a few minutes.
Suddenly, Taka raised his head to look directly into the other’s eyes, who replaced kind eyes for a big smile. Mondo had a wide variety of smiles but this one, this stupid wide, teeth-clenched one meant ‘everything is alright’ where as Taka just continued to feel as hurt and tired. He inspected the scars meticulously, especially the ones across his face before unwrapping his arms around Mondo’s neck. Mondo didn’t budge but his palms slid to rest in other’s hips. Taka detected a tiny cut just under the left eye. He glared at it for a bit before rubbing it gently with his thumb to depreciate the change of texture that usually escorted injuries.
Red eyes were glazed deep in thought to which Mondo frowned and sighed. “Who are you?”
Taka was taken aback with the question. “What? Do you not recognize me?”
The exaggerated dismay on Ishimaru’s expression lines was what caused the loud, boisterous laugh that followed. It started off as a snort but it quickly developed to guffaws. That laugh only belonged to Mondo and to Mondo only. Taka simply gawked at him in absolute oblivion until the other stopped to explain. “I-I am just playin’ ya.” He managed to say between chortles “Ya’ almost fooled me with that long hair of yours, but your face continues the same. Oh gosh! How long has it been? 5 months? Hmph- it looks good on ya!”
This had not been the first time apart but it had been the longest they have been away from each other.
“This is hardly the time for games!”
“Sorry! Pout as much as you want. That cute angry face does not work on me! It was fuckin’ hilarious to see your reaction!”
Mondo conceded. He did look older, more mature, like a proper business man. He smirked turning Taka alert to his movements. He proceeded to remove his gloves and threw them carelessly on top of the table. He cupped Ishimaru’s pale but warm face against his cold hands. He flinched with the abrupt change of temperature but melted into it nevertheless. He pushed Taka’s bangs back revealing the angry wrinkled forehead and some kinky strands of hair that fought free from the grip. He noticed the obvious dark rims under the eyes, knowing full well he was the cause of that predicament. Regardless, he chose to leave the subject untouched. In any case he still had the same face and the same soft raven hair.
(…)
Although not evident, Kirigiri did worry about Ishimaru’s well being. He had a gorgeous smile when he truly felt happy and he was the only who could perform such a confidence boost in Taka.
“Hello, Mondo. It is nice to see you’re back safe.”
He looked at his right to see the former ultimate detective staring at him with a formal smile. “Hello Kirigiri. How are you?”
“Good. What about you?”
“Meh- could’a be worse!” he answered, looking fondly at Taka.
The conversation quickly died and Inadvertently, Kirigiri’s eyes fell over Mondo’s lap, where Taka was still sitting.
For once, Taka was able to read the surprise in Kirigiri’s face and immediately jumped out to his upright position leaving Mondo stunned.
“I didn’t realize I was still in y-your lap. I am so sorry kyoudai!”
He could have been quieter in saying that… Kyoko attempted to cover a snicker behind her usual thinking expression which became apparent that it would be a hard task when holding an apple in each hand.
5. “???”
Chapter: 2
Context: after the “reunion” moment. Taka went to grab breakfast for himself and Mondo, while the other waited for him in the lounge.
Taka rushed to the kitchen without running. Old habits die hard I guess. Mondo chuckled at that. A tall man with ridiculous hair was now approaching Mondo.
“Mondo! So nice to see you again, man!”
“Same, Hagakure. How are you doing?”
“Fine. (gasps) those are some ugly, nasty scars.” Hagakure pointed it out “Are you ok?”
“No, dude. Can’t you see I’m dead?”
“AHHHHHHH- a ghost!”
Mondo is now the one stunned by Hiro’s overreaction.
“Bro… Chill… I am just teasing you… Did you seriously think I was dead? How high are you?”
“Are you sure you didn’t come to haunt me??” Hiro continued, half-hunched, covering half of his face with his forearms, squinting towards an even more stupefied Mondo,
“You have serious problems. I was bein’ sarcastic, ya’ big idiot!”
“Oh- haha! I am glad to hear it!” Hagakure quickly to his usual chirp self and laughed it off “It would be bad news if I had been haunted by a ghost.”
“Whatever man…”
Thank you so much for reading!! And apologies for my terrible sense of humour!

The Rebel’s Ascension
An Annotated Writing Playlist
Because it came up recently that writing a story is getting real serious when you reach the “Making a playlist” level, I wanted to share the soundtrack I created for “The Rebel’s Ascension” for your enjoyment. I included some remarks how the songs help me with the fic or what kind of scenes they remind me of.
If you want to do this for you own fic, consider yourself tagged! It’s always interesting to see what others writers listen to while crafting their stories. <3
Here’s the link to the playlist on Spotify.
The entire “soundtrack” is meant to help me capture the tone of the story. For me, “The Rebel’s Ascension” is dark and gritty, so I looked for songs (instrumental and otherwise) that convey that feeling for me. While browsing around on Spotify I found a whole bunch of artists that make music with a Nordic/Norse, Celtic or folkoristic touch, which was a perfect fit. Some chanting, a lot of drums. Most of it very traditional but not boring.
Many of the instrumental songs come from soundtracks like “Vikings”, “God of War”, “The Witcher 3″ and “Gladiator”. All of them help me with the pacing of the scenes since I like to go for a walk, listen to the music and let the story play out in my head.
Some songs do have lyrics, though. I chose them mainly by their ability to make me think of a certain character. They are the “theme songs”, so to say. The ones for Solas and Mythal resonate with me the most but all in all, the music helps me to get excited about the story whenever I feel unmotivated to sit down and write.
[-- ENTERING SPOILER TERRITORY --]
Below the cut, you’ll find more annotations on specific songs for specific scenes and chapters. I placed them there, because they contain mild spoilers for the story. If you don’t mind or you’re just here to read my weird thoughts on ancient elves and their relationships, you’re clear to proceed. :)
“The Last Kingdom” by John Lunn & Eivør – I call them the opening credits. This piece of music serves as an overall theme for the entire story. As soon as I hear it, I get excited and want to get back to writing. The song has that sense of mystery and danger that fits perfectly, and really keeps me motivitated.
“Small Moves” by Alan Silvestri – This is my personal theme for Solas in this story. It’s soft and warm and little melancholic. I can imagine him as a kind and considerate young man who likes to help those in need (a side of his character which he will learn to lock away, as we all very well know).
"Memories of Mother” by Bear McCreary – For me, this song really captures Solas’s feelings for Mythal. Although I gave them a mentor-protége relationship in the story, I always headcanon Mythal is very motherly to Solas (more than for her “real children” like Andruil or Dirthamen). In my mind, Mythal would love to raise Solas up to be one of the Evanuris but he refuses her because he doesn’t want to be corrupted by their power, which might serve as a source of conflict later on.
“How Fare The Gods?” by Syven – Although I have several songs in the playlist that I attribute to specific members of the elven pantheon, this song served as an overall theme for them. I listenend to this a lot, when Solas is summoned before the gods in chapter 1.
“Progeny” by Hans Zimmer – In chapter 2, Solas enters the Beyond and meets Ghil Din’an, a Spirit of Death. Althought it’s a friendly encounter and the spirit ultimately tries to help Solas, I always wanted the scene to have this air of foreboding. This piece of music conveys that perfectly.
“Svanrand” by Heilung – Andruil makes an appearance in chapter 3, and to say I’m intrigued by her character would be a vast understatement. For me, she is a predator and this song brought me in the right mind to write her. Maybe I should do a one-shot with her as the protagonist.
“Tryfing” by Danheim – In the story, Solas is sent by the Evanuris to find a creature they refer to as the “Black Dread”. It’s basically a play on words, mending the historical “Black Death” together with the “Dread Wolf”. When I listen to this song, I can see the showdown between Solas and the creature in my head. It’s dangerous and dynamic and I can’t wait to write that scene. Fun fact: The song is named after a magical sword form Norse mythology. How fitting is that?
“The Song of the Sword-Dancer” by Pervical Schuttenbach, Marcin Przybylowicz – Felani is one of the elvhen OCs I created for the story. She is a skilled blacksmith and bound in servitude to June from whom she had learned her craft. In my personal head-canon for her, she creates the Sulevin blade to help Fen’Harel’s rebellion in their fight against the Evanuris.
“Death Smiles At All Of Us” by Hans Zimmer, Lisa Gerrard – This comes rather late in the playlist but everytime the music starts to play, I feel this little chill and I’m like “Yeah, this is gonna be good!”. For me, it’s the prelude to the final showdown between Solas and one of the Evanuris (I won’t give away which one though). Also, death is kind of an over-all theme in the story.
“Vox Populi” by Thirty Seconds To Mars – If this fic were a movie, this would be the song that played while the credits roll. It reminds me of where the story is going and has the best fitting lyrics ever. It’s a song about calling people to arms, being a traitor and a dreamer. I can’t listen to this without thinking of Solas. It makes me eager to get to THE END.
There a many more songs in the playlist but these are the once that resonate with me and the story the most. If you like to check it out, here’s the Spotify link again.

Cool Games I Finished In 2019 (In No Real Order)
We’re here. The end of the decade. 2019 was a weird, turbulent year for me. Despite my cross-country move already being a year behind me somehow, nothing’s really settled yet. Living situation is still weird, still separated from most of my belongings, I left my full-time QA job for a contractor position at a mobile game advertising company that may or may not convert into a full-time position... everything about what’s going on with me still just feels like I’m completely winging it, and while that’s not a position I’m really comfortable being in for such an extended amount of time, everything seems to be working out okay enough despite it. All this is probably why I spent most of my time playing the shit out of a handful of games rather than playing a bunch of different games this year! Needed some sort of stability. Also when I did manage to pull myself away from the timesink games and play something else, a lot of them ranged from “okay” to “real bad”. But I still managed to play just enough stuff that I liked to where I can put out yet another one of these. Here’s a bunch of cool games I experienced for the first time in 2019.
Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst (PC, 2005)
I haven’t bothered to do two thirds of the story quests yet and have barely touched any Episode 4 content so this game technically doesn’t count for this list, but if I left it off I would be neglecting to mention an extremely large portion of my video game playing time this year. I fell back into PSO preeeettty hard this year after the surprise announcement of Phantasy Star Online 2 finally coming to the US. Guess what: game still rules. It feels stiff to play and it’s obviously far less expansive than it seemed back in 2000, but the core of Phantasy Star Online is still as fun as it ever was and the aesthetics are still entirely my shit. I love everything about the way this game looks and sounds, I love stumbling on a weird new weapon, I love participating in the custom seasonal events the server I’m on runs, and I love how oddly relaxing the experience of playing this game and taking it all in is. I will probably continue to play Phantasy Star Online into 2020. I will probably still dip back into it after PSO2 US servers finally launch. If I know you and you want to join my Discord server for PSO get at me. PSO forever.
Cookie’s Bustle (PC, 1999)
You ever play a game that just speaks to you? Even through a language barrier? A game so incredibly out there and bizarre in the exact way you love that you can’t help but adore it despite barely understanding it? Holy moly did I ever find that game. I learned about Cookie’s Bustle through a news story last year about some rare games leaking from a Japanese collector’s stash. Didn’t manage to get it to run back then, but my off and on attempts to get it working finally paid off in March of this year and I’m so glad I kept trying. I knew nothing of this game other than it had a weird name and was about a bear doing sports, and it turned out to be a fully voice-acted and mostly unsubtitled adventure game starring Cookie Blair, a 5 year old girl from New Jersey who sees herself as a teddy bear and has traveled to Bombo World, an island nation once visited by aliens and currently in the middle of a civil war, to participate in the Bombo Sports Tournament. Dead level, I probably shouldn’t have been able to genuinely love Cookie’s Bustle as much as I did. The only context I had for what was happening and what I was supposed to do was provided by a 20-year-old Google translated walkthrough with broken images, the game’s slightly higher than usual reliance on English loan words, and 30-ish years of video games and anime allowing me to halfway pick up on a handful of Japanese words. However, Cookie’s Bustle is dripping with an undeniable and off-beat charm that genuinely transcends language. Even if you can’t understand the words and specifics, you can understand the basic plot, characterizations, and emotions they’re going for. Cookie’s Bustle manages to both be completely off-the-wall bizarre and feel totally genuine and heartfelt at the same time, a balance very few games manage to successfully hit but many of my favorites do. One could say that’s why it seems to have resonated with a decent amount of other people this year, too. Games rarely make me feel sad that they’re over. but when they do that’s how I know they’re one of the good ones. Seriously, go look up a longplay or stream of Cookie’s Bustle if you (understandably) don’t want to go through the hassle of setting it up and figuring out how to play it, it’s impossible not to love.
Devil May Cry 5 (PlayStation 4, 2019)
Here’s something crazy to think about: Devil May Cry 4 came out 11 years ago. Aside from being a potent reminder that time is moving too fast and we’re all going to die soon, that means that there hasn’t been a DMC for over a decade. Devil May Cry 5 does not bare this fact even a little bit. Not only did they pick up right where they left off and manage to make another Devil May Cry game without missing a beat, they made arguably the best Devil May Cry game. I mean I still like the story and single-character focus of DMC3 the best, but DMC5 is the best playing game in the series without a doubt. Nero finally feels like he has a complete and complex toolset, Dante is the most mechanically dense and fun to play he’s ever been, and they even added a new guy that’s... neat to play as, until you start trying to S-rank the harder difficulties. Then he’s kind of annoying to play as. But it’s still cool that they tried something totally different and mostly got it to work! They also did something very stupid that I love and used this game as an excuse to make literally every single piece of Devil May Cry media canon. Like, characters exclusively from the anime and the books show up and act like they’re someone you already know and love? And they go out of their way to explain the most esoteric lore shit possible?? And despite it all they still intentionally give DMC2 as short a shrift as they can??? It’s so dumb, it rules. It’s just one of the many things about the game that show that even with so long of a gap between entries, no love for the series was lost by the people that make it. I don’t think the suits at Capcom expected this game to hit as hard as it did though, because despite there being clear areas where the game could be expanded on with DLC there still hasn’t been anything announced. I hope they’re maybe saving it for some sort of DMC3-esque special edition, or maybe just already working on DMC6, because even after getting all S-ranks I still wanted to play more. The game’s just that damn good.
Hypnospace Outlaw (PC, 2019)
I expected very little from Hypnospace Outlaw. I backed the game on Kickstarter solely because it looked cool and I thought a game about fake GeoCities was neat, and then I immediately forgot about it until it released. Admittedly my lack of expectations stemmed mostly from the fact that it’s kind of hard to set expectations for a game you never really thought too hard about, but even in the brief period of time where I considered it enough to give it money, I never expected it to be much more than a pretty-looking 101 Great GeoCities Jokez delivery vehicle. Boy was I wrong. I mean, it is incredibly good at that, but Hypnospace Outlaw is so much more than a funny period piece. The basic premise is that you’re in alternate universe 1999 and have just become a community moderator for an Internet service provider that allows people to connect to the Internet while they sleep. You’re tasked with browsing the game’s weird fake Internet and issuing demerits to users who violate the five basic Hypnospace rules, but it quickly evolves into something way bigger. Hypnospace Outlaw’s greatest strength is its exceptional ability at weaving together subtle world building, small and engaging character arcs, esoteric microjokes, and a genuine sense of mystery and discovery into an incredibly cohesive and engaging package. It’s as much a game about the people that use and run its weird fake Internet as it is about that weird fake Internet itself. And a lot of the problems both face echo the problems we face with our real world Internet today. When I was mapping out writing this article like a month or two ago I was prepared to go on about how at its core, Hypnospace Outlaw is an incredibly poignant story about how uncaring tech corporations actively harm their users and always have, but then a couple of days ago I read Colin Spacetwinks’ game of the year list and his #1 entry put most everything I would have said about that topic down in a way more eloquent and well-written way than I ever could have. And then I remembered that Friend Of The Site Heidi Kemps covered some of the same angle but from the perspective of the early Internet in an article earlier this year, again way better than I could have. So I highly recommend you read those when you’re done here. What I wanna bring up instead is just how effortlessly surprising and interconnected a lot of stuff in Hypnospace feels, using a mildly spoiler-ish late game example. Two of the first “zones” you’re allowed to moderate when you start Hypnospace Outlaw are Teentopia and Goodtime Valley, which are essentially alternate universe Yahooligans and a little slice of Hypnospace just for Boomers respectively. On Teentopia you’ll see a bunch of kids that are wild for Squisherz, Hypnospace’s alternate universe version of Pokémon, and over in Goodtime Valley you’ll see (much like there was back in real world 1999) a few pages made by religious fundamentalists convinced that everything the kids like these days is the work of Satan. This of course includes Squisherz, and you can find a page by one organization full of crackpot conspiracy theories with flimsy evidence that TOTALLY DEFINITELY backs up their claim. Squisherz contains a wolf, which the Bible warns about many times! This giraffe monster CLEARLY has a pentagram in its design!! And the eye of this snake-like Squisherz is the eye of Horus, an Egyptian occult symbol and NEED I REMIND YOU that Lucifer took the form of a snake in the Garden of Eden!!! It is very clear what this page is goofing on and throughout the course of the game it doesn’t get updated at all, so it’s very easy to laugh at it and forget about it. Very late into the game, you get an optional sidequest. Adrian Merchant, one of the CEOs of Merchantsoft, the company that created Hypnospace, was found out to have logged traffic indicating he was a frequent visitor of a website called Children of HORUS, and a call is put out to investigate what that even is. You can easily find the website, but it asks you for a password if you click the Enter button. Adrian Merchant is consistently portrayed throughout the game as a complete idiot, and the solution to this puzzle has you capitalize on that. Another early game objective ended up with you finding a list of cracked passwords, and one of those passwords happens to be for the instant messenger account of Adrian Merchant. If you can remember that he was even in that text file from forever ago, and then put two and two together that of COURSE that dumbass would use the same password for everything, you just punch in his messenger password and you’re granted access to the Children of HORUS page. It turns out that HORUS is an acronym that stands for Hiding Occult References in Utmost Secrecy, and the page itself is a basic leaderboard with a list of names and two numbered columns reading “Hidden” and “Found”. In that list of names you’ll find A. Merchant, along with the names of various other CEOs and celebrities you might have read about elsewhere in Hypnospace. One of the other names on this list is F. Kazuma, the CEO of Monarch, creators of Squisherz. The funny conspiracy theory website from the beginning of the game that you most likely forgot about was, about this one specific thing, correct. There was an eye of Horus hidden on the snake from Squisherz. Not as any sort of Satanic plot, mind you, but only as part of some weird millionaire dickwaving contest. This dumb tiny revelation is not called out by the game at all and nothing comes of it, it’s just there for you to notice if you’ve been paying enough attention. Hypnospace Outlaw is LITTERED with stuff like this. Weird small interconnected things you wouldn’t expect to be interconnected. Little dumb things you wouldn’t expect to have any sort of payoff but somehow do. And it’s also just as chock full of big things. Having all the pieces fall into place at once to where I was able to access Hypnospace’s equivalent of the dark web was the best sequence in a game this year for me, even beating out the outlandish shit in DMC5. Getting and solving the final case was a rush. Hypnospace Outlaw is full of incredible moments big and small. It’s genuinely engaging and affecting, which is so much more than I was expecting from a game that was pitched to me as “Funny GeoCities Cop”. It almost has no right being so good. But it is. Hell, even the music rules! I didnt even get into that! I don't have enough time or space to get into that now! The music is so goddamn good! I know I started these lists because I had no interest in ranking games, but every year I sort of jokingly-but-not-jokingly say “haha this game sure would be my number one if I did that!” for at least one game. It’s time to fully lean into it. I don’t gotta rank ‘em all, but I can pick a favorite. Hypnospace Outlaw is my favorite game of 2019 with a goddamn bullet.
These games were also cool, I just had less to say about them:
Etrian Odyssey (Nintendo DS, 2007): Man, this series just started out good, huh? I dabbled with the first two games in college when I got a DS flashcart but never really dug in until EO4, and the first game is enjoyable in just about every way the modern ones are. Definitely more barebones and punishing though. Kero Blaster (PlayStation 4, 2017): This is a game by the creator of Cave Story that does not aim to be Cave Story, and that’s fine! A fun little shooter in its own right, though I do think the shooting in Cave Story felt a little better than it does here. Space Invaders Extreme (Nintendo DS, 2008): I played the shit out of this game in college thanks to that flashcart I mentioned before, but I never finished a playthrough in full until this year for some reason. Still way stylish and way fun! I need to get a copy of the second one... CROSSNIQ+ (Nintendo Switch, 2019): Incredibly chill puzzle game that can be as hard or easy as you want it to be. Almost uncanny in how well it emulates the style of late PS1/Dreamcast games. Super Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo Switch, 2019): Mario Maker 2 is kind of weird for me. It’s a solid improvement in a lot of aspects, but a clear regression in a lot of others. Also the online multiplayer is the second least amount of fun I’ve had with a video game this year (Secret of Mana swooped in and stole the number one slot near the end). Still, I had a lot of fun with it and I’ll probably end up going back to it eventually. Katamari Damacy Reroll (Nintendo Switch, 2018): The original Katamari Damacy is still every bit as fun and charming as it was upon its original release. This port is weirdly based on the Japanese version with the English text inserted, which means no English voice acting and Wanda Wanda only plays in the multiplayer mode. The Joycon sticks also aren’t the greatest for doing charge rolls. But none of these faults detract too much from the game. Bring on We Love Katamari Reroll! Earth Defense Force 5 (PlayStation 4, 2018): Sandlot somehow keeps finding ways to make each new EDF bigger and explodier, and EDF5 is the biggest and explodiest yet. I think the mission design in 4.1 was more solid overall, but 5 feels the best to play and has the most fun tools. Also the dialogue is the most absurd its ever been, and the final boss goes for it way harder than the series ever has. Pokémon Shield (Nintendo Switch, 2019): This game is honestly just okay, but leaving it off would again be neglecting a game I put a ton of time into this year. Pokémon Sword is fun in the way most Pokémon games usually are, and extremely half-baked in basically every other aspect. I’m still having a good time putting together teams and finding shinies and doing The Pokémon Thing regardless.
And that’s 2019 (and this decade) in the bag! I don’t know where anything’s going from here, but I’m going to ride it out as best as I can! I hope you do too! As always, thank you so much for getting to the bottom of all these words. I’m hoping to be in a more stable place mid-2020, and then I want to get back to all the things I haven’t had time to do. I want to get back to streaming, I want to write more dumb articles like The Best Babies, I want to do it all! I hope I will be able to do it all. Until then!

The Needs of the Many: A Garashir Reading of “Broken Link”
What’s the current definition of stupidity? It might be trying to write meta for a twenty-six year old show. But you know what? I’m doing it anyway. I make questionable fandom choices and regret mostly nothing.
So. I’m still watching Deep Space Nine—about halfway through season five, but with pretty much every spoiler under my belt considering I have no patience and dove straight into the fic—and I am, without a doubt, absolute garashir trash. Now this is important because as I watch I’ve been on the lookout for all the major scenes and episodes that the fans like to talk about, those that catch our attention for obvious reasons: “Past Prologue,” “The Wire,” “Our Man Bashir,” and the like. However, through my (admittedly cursory) browsing these last few months, I’ve been surprised to find no one talking about season four’s finale “Broken Link.”
On the surface it makes sense. Though Garak gets one of his all too rare episodes, we’ve past the point of no return with Berman’s homophobia and our two lovesick faves aren’t interacting as much as they once did. RIP.
Thus, it’s easy to pass over Garak doing another Bad Thing in the name of his Cardassian devotion, especially when the Bad Thing is circumvented thanks to Worf instead of Julian. However, what’s nagged at me since watching that scene is one simple, yet significant detail.
Julian was down on that planet.
Quick re-cap for those of us who haven’t watched in a while: the Defiant is taking Odo back to the Great Link in order to cure him of the disease they saddled him with in the first place (nice, huh?). Garak realizes that this may be the one and only time they have all the Founders together and potentially vulnerable. He tries to gain control of the Defiant’s weaponry, but is ultimately discovered and stopped by Worf. Sorry, Garak. You might be surprisingly fit for just a plain, simple tailor, but you’ve got nothing on a battle-obsessed Klingon.
All caught up? Fantastic. Now, all around it’s not a terrible plan. There are just two potential issues. The first is the whole, you know, genocide thing. Some of us tend to frown at that, no matter how much good eliminating the Founders might do moving forward. Beyond that pesky little moral issue, we have the problem that Odo, Sisko, and Julian are all down on the planet’s surface, their deaths a surety if Garak manages to succeed in his plan. This is acknowledged too, so we can’t live with the happy assumption that Garak just wasn’t informed about who was accompanying Odo on this particular mission:
Worf: And what about Odo, and Captain Sisko and Doctor Bashir?
Garak: They'll die. And once the Jem'Hadar ships realize what we're doing, so will we. But what are our lives compared to saving the entire Alpha Quadrant?
From a shipping perspective it doesn’t look too good. After all, how loving is your duo if one can so easily sacrifice the other, without a moment’s hesitation or—dare we imagine it—a single tear in sight? It’s a rather grim picture, the sort of scene that jars shippers out of their lovely little pockets, carefully crafted worlds where suspension of disbelief runs wild. The show-runners may not have had the balls to make anything canon until 2017 (good god), but provided the characters in question don’t actively sabotage the relationship, thereby leaving room for imagining something more, you’re good to go. No such luck with this scene.
At least, it appears that way at first glance. It occurs to me that there are a couple of potential readings if we feel inclined to reach for them. I find it notable that Garak is already thinking to the next logical consequence. That is, Jem’Hadar ships bearing down on them, him meeting his own demise soon after Julian. There’s admittedly something romantic in that. The willingness to let your loved one go, safe in the knowledge that you’ll be quick to join them. We could even argue that Garak isn’t thinking straight in this moment. We know he’s a proud man devoted to his people, exile aside, and right before this he has a rather gutting conversation with the primary Founder:
Founder: They're dead. You're dead. Cardassia is dead. Your people were doomed the moment they attacked us. I believe that answers your question.
So, as far as Garak knows, entire fleets of his people were killed in their last battle, including his father—quite the emotional blow, even if Tain was an absolute shit dad. He’s also received confirmation of what the Federation has long suspected, that the Dominion isn’t content to keep the Alpha Quadrant out of their business, but has every intention of seizing control and, given their history, eliminating rather than assimilating it, to quote the Borg. You’re dead. Your entire species is dead. Everyone else you associate with, even those insidious humans, are dead. It’s only a matter of time. As Garak has pointed out seasons earlier, he knows when to cut his losses and that was one hell of a “resistance if futile” speech. If the rest of the quadrant has any hope of survival, now is the time to cut those losses—including Julian.
Which I actually really love.
Because it’s true to Garak’s character. He’s a complicated, morally gray guy, just the sort to blow himself and his shop up in the hopes of saving his life. Or justify killing the entirety of one species to ensure the survival of many. As much as we (or at least I) would have loved a dramatic declaration of love, the realization that he can’t target the Founders no matter how necessary it may seem because his Julian would be caught in the crossfire… that’s just not Garak. Just as importantly, it’s not Julian either. See, I think this scene pairs rather well with “Our Man Bashir.” We can come up with the same sort of potential readings for why Julian was willing to shoot someone he—from the shipper’s perspective—is already head over heels in love with: he’s a doctor and had every confidence in his ability to keep Garak alive until they get out of the holosuite. He’s genetically enhanced and has superb aim, knowing he’ll only create a flesh wound. He was really trying to hit the wall and fucked that one up badly whoops, etc. Regardless of those headcanons though, canonically speaking Julian did shoot him and that’s all there is to it. More specifically, he shot Garak to make sure that Sisko, Kira, Worf, O’Brien, and Jadzia survived, a sacrificing the one to save the many situation, much like Garak’s plan. Or, to put it another way:
Spirk is the ultimate standard for all other Star Trek ships, if not, for many, shipping in general. Lots of fans have already pointed out the similarities between the sickbay hand clasp in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Julian’s moment of forgiveness in “The Wire,”
but there’s another parallel between Spock’s iconic sacrifice and the choices made in DS9. “Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few” to which Kirk answers, “Or the one.” This is the same logic that our new duo is abiding by.
Though a notorious liar, we’re left with nothing else that challenges Garak’s words—he truly seems to believe that the Alpha Quadrant’s safety is worth sacrificing those on the Defiant for. Though a doctor through and through, we’re left with Julian’s steady hand and blood on Garak’s neck—he truly seems to believe that potentially losing one friend is worth assuredly saving five. Neither one is willing to compromise their morals for the other and I personally think that speaks to a healthy amount of respect, both for themselves and each other. In the same way that Garak embraces Julian’s Federation-style optimism and Julian comes to understand that lies are how Garak communicates, they simply and completely accept one another. That includes saying through actions if not words, “I love you, but I’m not going to let that love compromise my core beliefs.” Neither is the type to let love interfere with what they perceive as their duty, but that doesn’t mean the love doesn’t exist.
Of course, if we follow the spirk parallel, that devotion to the many is later challenged. In The Search for Spock Kirk reverses the logic and justifies his journey with, “Because the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.” Anyone who reads any of my metas knows that Context Is a Thing and in this case the context for both films is personal sacrifice. Spock chooses to sacrifice himself to save the Enterprise. Kirk and the others choose to risk their lives and their careers to get Spock back. These are markedly different situations from what Julian and Garak shoulder: sacrificing one another for the many. If you love someone, then giving up your life for them is easy. Having that action save a whole bunch of other people along the way? Icing on the cake. You die knowing that you’ve done the heroic deed and your better half lives on. But can you harm your other half to uphold your oath as a doctor? Can you kill them to save millions of others? I’d argue that Julian and Garak have the far more difficult choice and both of them managed to answer, “Yes.” It’s a testament to their characterization and, given their strong ethics, precisely how well they fit together. They know where the other stands, what they mean to one another…and when they can’t afford to prioritize that love over everyone else.
In the end, neither even knew that their sacrifice would pay off. If Garak had succeeded in gaining control of the Defiant’s weaponry he might have found that the Founders had another trick up their sleeve to ensure their survival, leaving him with a dead Julian and an unharmed foe. Julian doesn’t know if he and Garak will be able to survive the holosuite program—or what might happen to the others if they perish. He might end up losing everyone, himself included. Neither has any assurances when they make their decision and that to me makes it that much more meaningful. They’re both acts of determination and faith. And from a narrative standpoint (with help from a healthy dose of Plot Armor) they’re both rewarded for that faith. Garak isn’t forced to kill Julian. Julian’s shot harmlessly skims Garak’s neck. They made the hard call, lost little, and in the case of “Our Man Bashir,” gained a healthy dose of respect for what the other was capable of.
I think that’s pretty damn neat.
Right. Thank you for coming to my decades late TED Talk. Peace ✌️

also 001 zc im springing it all on u
spring it all on me baybee. i’m ready. i’m thrivin
Zay & Charlie
When I started shipping it if I did: oh if i were a viewer, i think i’d be sniffing out this storyline EARLY. literally from the moment charlie leaps up to volunteer to tutor him in 103 and then is all “you’re so unapologetically yourself” with all that Awe i’d be like... mhm. okay. mhm ok mhm mhm mhm right mhm....... although i think i would be skeptical. i would be kinda like (as i think some of you were) are they actually going to go through with this...... are they playing me 4 a fool.... but then when you watch 112 after so much build and theres the RUNNING ACROSS THE CITY TO GET TO THE AUDITION AND AINT NOOOO AWWWYWYWYWYWYAAYWAAYYYYY AND THE LOUVRE KISS LIKE WAHAHAHWAHWAHHHHHHH AHHHHHHHHH -- yeah i’d be in it from there. you don’t see it coming going INTO the first season, but to be honest zc kind of Owned the first season in the later half there. they were subtle in some ways but then they really just brought the mf PUNCH
My thoughts: so. clearly. i love them. fdkjshgkjsg i think i have a lot of fondness for them because they really organically blossomed in the first season in a way i wasn’t expecting. as y’all know, we broke the story for the second season first and then backtracked to s1, and i will be candid... charlie was like... not a person when we first outlined s2 JFGDSKLGKDFGKLFDH. he was in a relationship with zay, and it was supposed to be this big surprise going into the second season, but otherwise we really didn’t like... know what to do with him or honestly had THOUGHT about it. but then as we started working on s1, he just kind of... emerged, as well as their storyline of barely acquaintances to friends to unexpected lovers. and i really really love what they grew to be. they’ve been one of the best parts of writing the show tbh and i have so much fun writing their scenes, even when they’re challenging (cough 208 cough, one of the most difficult scenes i’ve ever written in anything ever)
What makes me happy about them: i love how they see the other person for who they actually are, how they can cut through the bullshit and see the other for how they wish they could be seen (charlie seeing zay as more than the popular “cool” kid that he has to put on as a sort of defense to survive at aaa, and zay seeing charlie for who he actually is beneath all of the facades he’s created to please the rest of the world) and how that allows them the courage to try and actually BE those things. like. charlie may not have ever gotten to a point of really considering accepting his own sexuality if it weren’t for zay, i think -- especially since zay then gave him this incredibly SAFE space to figure it out AND loved him at the same time. i love how they demonstrate such a Balance for one another (there’s that key word again!), like how in s1 a core part of their friendship is the fact that charlie seems to be the only person zay really has who cares about all the things he cares about but also isn’t... a crazy monster the way everyone at aaa is fDJSKFLDG. and zay brings balance to charlie in showing him its okay to have fun, to be imperfect, to throw a swear word around or not give a damn sometimes or do things just because he wants to. and that’s important! that’s major! and then i just love love love how they’re playful with one another but it comes from this very sincere fond place. their dynamic would not be what it is without their sort of teasing nature, but it NEVER feels like it’s coming from a place of animosity, it’s always this affectionate kind of banter. i’m really picky about how teasing translates into romance, and i think the way they make it work is a fave thing about them for me. i’m forgetting like 4324325 things i wanna say here but i love them MUCHO
What makes me sad about them: so. hm. yeah. you know how there are those otp ask games or gif memes and there’s always that category that’s like “it’s right, just not right now” ships? i have always disliked that category bc i think people constantly misinterpret it (or its just a poor label to apply to a ship lmao), but i think they are actually a perfect example of what i think that label is supposed to represent. charlie and zay are 100% right, but not right now. they can’t be right when charlie is still trying to figure out so much of his sexuality and his sense of acceptance, because no matter how much they love each other it’s just not fair to zay to have all these conditions on their relationship. like, it’s great that he likes him enough to be okay with it, but it shouldn’t be that way in a truly healthy situation. yknow? and when the rules keep changing or grow to be confusing (i.e. how charlie seemed to be improving in 207 but then backslid majorly in 208), you end up with like... well, miscommunications like 208. and those can be brutal.
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: again, i’m just projecting based on my experience in fandom and observing fandom, but here are a handful of things i think would be common in zc fic that would drive me up the wall. 1) babying and/or pandering charlie to the point that he’s just like... this uwu baby gay that completely strips him of his complexity, surprisingly sharp sarcasm, all his uneven edges and quirks, etc. 2) fetishizing of them both or more specifically, racism surrounding the portrayal of zay 3) a complete bashing of charlie’s faith, as that goes against how he’s written + his arc as a character [ like if you gotta work thru ur own grievances with organized religion then by all means, but it would probably bother me bc of his characterization and im literally not even religious lmao ] 4) banter that crosses the line and goes into that territory of lowkey bullying or tasteless that is a squick for me
Things I look for in fanfic: so of course, characterization that allows for the complexity of both of their characters would be A1 from day one as usual. would always love something that highlights the dance thing since that is... so important to their relationship in the show lmao. people who could capture their delicate balance of banter would be whew!!!! also random but i thought about it earlier today -- when winter olympics rolls around again, who is gonna write the ice skating au? it’s only a step or two away from dance y’all, let’s SEE IT!!!
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: zay would make the best of any relationship he gets into, but he and riley could be cute as i have mentioned before (altho i naturally prefer them as best friends, but they would treat each other the way they deserve which is important). there’s a character coming in s4 who i actually really enjoy with zay, but that’s a spoiler and neither here nor there... as for charlie, i again will make my vague comment about appreciating lucas x charlie... and that’s all i can say on that.............
My happily ever after for them: god i just. i want them to be happy and in love. and i mean that in that they’re happy with themselves, so they can be happy with one another. like, TRULY happy without all these conditions or strings attached. and to be able to be happy together IN PUBLIC. literally can you imagine. CAN YOU IMAGINE??
Who is the big spoon/little spoon: hmmmmmm again, i think it would vary. but i think my inclination is that typically zay is the big spoon, although i will say i think charlie is overall more cuddly (not that you’d ever assume so in public bc he’s so repressed DSJKFJDSKLGFDLKG)
What is their favorite non-sexual activity: i assume we wanna discuss the ones... that aren’t dance DJSKLFJDKGJFDLKJGKDJHLKDH. aside from the obvious, i really do think zay and charlie like to go out and explore together and just like... share experiences. like going to art museums is a big one, and seeing live performances. art is something that really connects them and i don’t think that can be understated, and one of their favorite things is experiencing art together and then getting the other to talk about their opinions on it. i also do think that while zay isn’t big on literature, he can be swayed if charlie reads to him. art completely aside, i think they like to go to the grand central market and browse / try new things. they also like window shopping, but that’s kind of funny bc their styles are so different so they’ll be like ooh and the other will be like rly. FDNSJKFDJSLGJDSG. omg they should have a day where they just get to dress the other person up all day in different stores... THERES a fun activity... zay is dressed head to toe in GAP and he’s like please set me on fire fJDSKFJDSKLGJKDLFG
send some winter hiatus asks !! or try this one
#zay x charlie#THANK U LENA#winter hiatus 2019#on god... on gOD do they know how much i love them#maggie#judahslewis#answered

Part 77 Alignment May Vary: A Little Touch of Undermountain
Last time, my players got wrapped up with a bunch of Githzerai and so I needed to come up with a Gith dungeon. For the next piece of the adventure, I used level 16 of Undermountain, so following will be spoilers for that level of 5e’s Undermountain. If you don’t mind, then read on to see how it progressed!
When I prep for a dungeon, I like to read the whole thing first. Not in incredible detail while taking notes or anything, but just skimming through, browsing maps, getting the general idea, spotting interesting rooms, getting a sense of the challenge.
What I’m really trying to do is to find the story.
Every dungeon tells a tale, or at least has the ability to tell a tale. There is no exception to this. Sometimes the tale is very deliberate, other times it will read differently to each GM, based on the personal biases and aesthetics they bring to their reading of the dungeon. For instance, in a dungeon run by Kobolds but with no details as to why they are there, different DMs will draw different conclusions. Some might look at the treasure room and determine that the Kobolds must be protecting an ancient treasure of their people. Bam, there you have a story. Others might notice that the Kobolds are oddly led by a Drow wizard and conclude that this is only the tip of a greater invasion dwelling just below the surface. Another might take the same data and think that this is the dwelling of an outcast Drow, who pridefully believes this to be the first step towards his conquering of the world. Even another might see this and believe that the Drow has been magically enchanted to believe that he himself is a Kobold, and the Kobolds serving him don’t have the courage to try and convince him otherwise, not after what happened to poor pussbottom...
In the case of the dungeon levels of Undermountain, we have quite a bit to go on. Each level in the fifth edition rendition of the dungeon is given at least one deliberate and major story that can be used as a throughline without and several smaller plot lines that are left more open for the DM and players to develop through their actions. In level 16, there is a Githyanki fortress led by a female warrior, Al’Chaia. Wrapped up in her rule is a number of complications. For one, she has encouraged competition among her followers and this has had led to at least one believing they could be a better ruler than she is. Even among her dragon pets, there is competition, as one of the young dragons is seeking to escape the rule of his great red mother and is willing to burn his way to freedom if given the opportunity and a strong enough party of (momentary) allies. And speaking of momentary allies, there are prisoners in the dungeon just waiting for a chance to escape: a group of Mind Flayers for one, and a lone Githzerai monk for another. The two groups won’t work together, but either one could make for a powerful set of allies when trying to work against Al’Chaia. Al’Chaia, for her part, is equal mixture paranoia and pride, desiring to have a direct hand in everything that happens in Stardock and personally interviewing all trespassers and prisoners. She prefers to have intruders taken alive and her knights see this as such a clear way to her favor that they will go to great lengths, even endangering themselves, to capture interlopers rather than kill them.
So, this leaves us with the following story threads:
Al’Chaia wants prisoners
Ezria is a prisoner whom the Githzerai want freed
At least one general wants Al’Chaia dead
There are Mindflayer prisoners who want to be freed
Level 16 is broken into two dungeons, really: the Crystal Labyrinth and the Githyanki Stardock (which is actually located in space and is a light entry into the Spelljammer campaign setting).
Transposing a Dungeon
If playing Undermountain on its own, then the purpose of every dungeon level is to survive and make it to the next lowest level. In this light, Level 16 is an odd one, because you never actually have to go to Stardock to proceed to the next level of Undermountain. Even a group curious about Stardock can’t easily access it, they have to find a key first which requires either killing or convincing one of the more powerful combatants in the Crystal Labyrinth to give you their key. A group might be COMPELLED to seek out and explore Stardock by groups they encounter earlier or later in Undermountain, but square for square it is the easiest level of Undermountain to bypass. The other surprising thing is that all of the story I mentioned above, all of those hooks, happen mostly in Stardock and not so much in the Crystal Labyrinth.
For my purposes, there isn’t anywhere else to go: the players aren’t in Undermountain trying to get to the next level, so I had to focus them from the start on the idea of accessing the Stardock. At the same time, they had some major restrictions that delvers into Undermountain don’t, the big one being they have nowhere to run to in case they need a long rest. Oh, and because their ship is running out of oxygen, they have a limited amount of time to finish the adventure and achieve their goal.
The goal I set up as rescuing Ezria, the Githzerai monk. It made the most sense in terms of story and also felt like the most achievable mission (as killing Al’Chaia is tough, considering she fights with other Gith at her side and at least one young red dragon (possibly more, and possibly an Adult Red Dragon, too, depending on when and how you fight her). I didn’t rule out the possibility of them killing Al’Chaia, but if they did it would have to take place as a hit-and-run assassination, killing her in a few rounds before she had a chance to summon any guards and then getting the heck outta dodge before the mamma dragon showed up to take revenge. Regardless, the mission would require stealthy play, something we haven’t done too much of in our adventures.
I also broke the mission into three pieces in my mind: one was to get through the Crystal Labyrinth (reskinned for my purposes as an in-between world, a backdoor the Githzerai “tunneled” through the aether into the Githyanki fortress, but which was discovered and occupied by the Githyanki) probably proceeding with the help of one of the dissatisfied generals working under Al’Chaia. The second part was to find Ezria in Stardock and break him out of prison. The third part was to escape back to the entrance of Stardock, where Ezria would open a portal and they would get back to the Githzerai homeworld.
There was nothing I threw out or changed over much aside from focusing the dungeon flow on these elements and adhering to those three parts. Other than that, I just got ready to improvise based on whatever the players did.
How Did it Go?
After an initial added puzzle involving a malfunctioning security laser system, the players enter the Labyrinth proper. I changed the entrance point to be the far east side of the map, rather than the west, because I wanted to place them potentially closer to Urlon, one of the more benign of the disgruntled lieutenants (AKA he doesn’t attack them on sight). Overall, there is less activity on this side of the map so I felt like it gave them a better chance of finding a way through the maze to the Stardock.
They do a good job initially of sneaking around. They encounter an imprisoned Mind Flayer, Marqoux (we call him Marky for short) and talk to him for a moment to get a basic understanding of where they are and what to look out for. They are unable to free him at this time, and so they move on and come to a gigantic cavern filled with Githyanki, overseen by a more powerful Githyanki female floating naked in a crystal in the center of the room. This fight is huge. It ends up involving about a dozen Githyanki, all them leaping and misty stepping all over the place, striking by darting in and then teleporting away. The woman in the crystal compliments their attacks with magic missile, haste spells, and twice a gigantic fireball that the party manages to dodge. There are also three Crystal Golems, time and light bending monstrous statues who are less effective than they might have been (due to some poor rolling on my part) and instead make the players feel pretty epic as they dodge around +8 and +10 to hits and whittle away at the Golems until they are naught but crystaline dust in the glowing Labyrinth.
The coolest moments to come out of this come from Imoaza. At one point she strikes down a Githyanki and then uses her Warlock powers to trap his soul and raise him from the dead as a wraith who fights at her command. At another, she leaps over a Crystal Golem’s attack, splits Drosselgreymer into its two smaller sickles, lands on the golem’s chest and hangs there with one sickle while slashing away at the creature’s single diamond eye with the other until it goes down. She then backflips off of it, puts together Drosselgremyer again, and shoots eldritch blasts at two Githyanki as she lands. It’s some next level anime shit.
All this fighting eventually attracts the attentions of one of the Githyanki Knights, who strides into battle atop a young red dragon and who turns the tide in favor of the enemy, scattering the players. Imoaza hides inside a cone of ice and then sneaks away when it dissipates. Carrick flees deeper into the caverns, hiding himself in a crevice. And Milosh, who has proven to be by far the tankiest of the characters, takes on the dragon and its rider on his own for a round or two before being forced into a dead end outside of the Mind Flayer’s prison cell.
I don’t know if we’ve mentioned before that Milosh has a power cannon on his arm, similar to Mega Man? His can burn special gun-arm slots to mimic certain magic and it can fire arrows like a crossbow, powering them up with different effects as he fires them (and he’ll learn more effects as time goes on). He uses one here to launch an electrified arrow into the Githyanki knight’s chest, nearly killing her in a single blow! She survives though and with his resources running out and a pissed off red dragon staring him down, Milosh prepares to either make his final stand or use a special ranger power he has to pierce the aether and travel unseen through the ethereal plane to escape. But instead the Githyanki hails him between ragged and haggard breaths and orders him to stand down and surrender. Milosh agrees and tries to find some clever way to turn this to advantage, but instead he is clapped in magical irons that prevent the use of his abilities and a magical headband that might have been familiar to Targaryen/Daymos from long long ago, blocking out Milosh’s thoughts and blinding him. Then he is led from the arena and up to Stardock.
But what about the player? Not wanting to lose anyone from the table for an extended period, we determine that in their haste to capture Milosh, the guards did not notice a key lifting off of their belt and floating quietly towards the small portal set in the door to the Mindflayer’s prison...
Keeping Your “Head” in the Game
The other party members, Imoaza and Carrick, witness Milosh’s surrender (Imoaza was actually disguised through magic as one of the Gith warriors talking to Milosh about surrendering, though she is too afraid to be caught to try and make a big play, like escorting him herself). They see him being led away by the injured Githyanki knight and her very-healthy-looking red dragon and realizing (correctly) that there is probably nothing they can do to rescue Milosh without risking the death of at least one party member, they continue to explore the labyrinth. Carrick is not very stealthy in his plate mail, and ends up alerting ANOTHER Githyanki magic user in a crystal, but Imoaza still has her disguise, and is able to pretend she is chasing him down, which makes the other Githyanki pause in their own pursuit. In this way, they stumble into the workshop of Urlon, creator of the crystal golems and their best bet at getting into Stardock.
Urlon explains his frustrations of Al’Chai’s rule and his desire to see her dead. He says if they manage to assassinate her, then he will create a distraction and slow the hunt for them, buying them time to find their comrade and escape. The players agree, though in truth they don’t intend to take on Al’Chai: they simply want to get to Ezria and get the heck out of this mess. Urlon doesn’t know this, so he offers them a ton of help: items and a general layout of the Stardock, and he also reforges Mistweaver, which used to belong to Aldric but which Carrick is now using, into a +3 magic weapon that retains its curious ability to hold onto and reproduce certain kinds of damage. An alarm then sounds throughtout the Labyrinth and Urlon snarls: “One of the Mindflayers has escaped,” he tells them. “They’ll be swarming the Labyrinth to find and kill the bastard. Here, you’ll need to hide until this is over.” He telekinetically levitates a massive work table off the ground to reveal a trapdoor leading into a small chamber underneath the workshop, where Imoaza and Carrick squeeze into a semi-comfortable spot, getting a short rest while Urlon and his apprentice, a younger Gith male, go to join the hunt.
The Mindflayer in question is the one being played by our other player, and the alarm is because he inadvertently alerted the Gith after a botched stealth roll. He now flees through the Labyrinth, seeking a hiding spot. He eventually spots one while slinking around the edge of a large cavern: a niche high in the wall that he levitates to and stuffs himself inside like a trapdoor spider. Indeed, the metaphor is apt, for some time later (after a short rest), a young Gith rests against the wall, out of sight of his companions... and is promptly set upon by the Mindflayer, who scores a critical hit against him and drags him up into the niche to feast on his brain. The brain’s memories rush into Marky and it turns out he ate the brain of Urlon’s apprentice. He now knows that two of the adventurers he met earlier are hiding out in Urlon’s workshop and that they have the means to enter Stardock.
Imoaza and Carrick have been sharing a somewhat uncomfortable silence while they rest. Carrick has been keeping an eye on Imoaza since Aldric’s death. Some whisper of fear eats at him. He hasn’t exactly suspected her, but some Paladin intuition is cluing him in to Imoaza’s deeper evil... though, for her part, Imoaza does not believe in evil. She believes only in pragmatism, and has already justified Aldric’s murder in her mind as an act of mercy. Aldric was clearly going to die, she tells herself, and was beginning to show his weakness besides. He’d become emotional and attached. He had a family, for god’s sake. That was dangerous for the group. She was preserving the group.
When Imoaza and Carrick next see the light of the Crystal Labyrinth pouring in through the trapdoor, it is not Urlon who stares down at them, but instead the tentacled face of the Mindflayer. He sends a telepathic message into their heads: “We should help each other.”
It is not the easiest decision to make. After all, Mindflayers are not easily trusted, and they also know that the Gith will be hunting for this one and will respond to any sighting of it with extreme prejudice. Even Urlon, who seemed actually sympathetic towards Ezria and the other Githzerai, going so far as to say he would cease the hunt for them if he replaces Al’Chaia, turned cold when it came to discussing the hunt for the ‘flayer.
At the same time, what choice do they really have?
The three thus band together, leave Urlon’s workshop, and make their way to the portal to Stardock. The Mindflayer uses his access to the Gith’s brain he devoured to fool the lone Crystal Golem blocking their way to the portal to Stardock (a cool notion the player came up with). They pass the golem without incident and insert the key into the portal, and are whisked away to the second part of the adventure, which we will cover next time.
One More Thing...
Before I sign off though, notice some of the things that went on in this session. I didn’t overly prep for this session. All I did read over the dungeon and then find those story threads. To keep things moving and the game fun in the actual session, all I had to do was tie everything that happened in the actual play with one of those story threads. Thus, when the fight with the Githyanki threatened to kill one or more of the players, it was perfectly reasonable instead for the Knight to try and imprison at least one of them, avoiding a TPK and keeping the story moving. Then, because that was removing a player from our game potentially, I improvised by turning to another story point: the Mindflayers. Now my player could stay in the action (very memorably so) as a Mindflayer. How often does a player get to play a monster in a game? And last, when the players seemed beat down and at a loss for where to go next, they found Urlon, who connected them to the “revolution” plot line.
Thus, no matter how crazy things got, I could always get us out of the weeds by steering us back towards the story threads. Identify these in your own sessions and you will find you have to plan a lot less and are ready to improvise when the need arises. And it ALWAYS arises. That’s half the fun of being a Dungeon Master!
