I've fully finished Mad Father! And time... for my final thoughts that I took awhile processing and I'm still in the process of processing it. The story is pretty good! The... entire family is messed up... Like, good on you Monika accepting the love of your life despite all his murderous crimes and then drawing the line at him harming your daughter and... adultery? (Monika can excuse murder but god forbid that man cheats on her. Monika is like: "I GIVE HIM MY EVERYTHING AND THAT'S WHAT I GET IN RETURN???" monika... the children please... the dude has been killing so many innocent people monika--)

Monika's a good mom, but as a person? Well, that's up for debate. I still like her though. Now the dad... At first I was like, okay, he murders people for whatever research he got going on, but at least he cares and loves his daughter. But that last part, yeah, nah... It was nice while it lasted though. And brooo... Aya are ya serious, Aya? Like are you fr rn??? Are you fr gurl???? Exasperated sigh but the signs were there and to be fair... if you're raised in a household with a dad that actively kills people and a mom that is 100% okay with that, chances are Aya is not gonna end up on Santa's good list.

It's just so sad cuz that blond kid had so much faith in her to Not go down the same path as her dad and I'm so sorry kid but that's unfortunately not possible. Doey headcanons bc my son is crying

Doey cries offscreen and when he does, his tears are either red, yellow or orange based on what hes feeling: angry + crying = kevin (red), sad + crying = jack (yellow), emptiness or burnout or regrets + crying = matthew (orange) he usually cries during the first months after the hour of joy

Kevin—the kid/humanoid with the angry eyes in Doey's monster form—glows the brightest among the three cuz he's consumed by anger (ik it doesnt exist in his model but imagine💔)

Altho its already shown thru a tape, Doey often does self-therapy and self-talking to comfort himself whenever he's distressed. Since he's the role model of the safe haven (after poppy was captured), he was always expected to remain calm in most situations. And he does it so well that almost no one can sense whether he's stressed or not. He may also not talk much about his feelings cuz he doesnt want to cause any more distress among the already distressed toys.

Blud is ALWAYS confused at what he should feel or think but he just hides it well in the game. And before being promoted as the leader, he mightve always answered "i dont know" to most questions he has no knowledge to answer to or whenever he's in a new situation. Jack is panicking badly but Matthew also tries to calm him down and take reign of Doey. Until anger reaches his head for Kevin to move,,,,, He's just as distressed as the other toys, he was just used to it

He hugs himself cuz he has no one to hug 😭😭😭 he's often outside, searching for scraps of food

For further insight let's try to affirm Aziraphale is the housewife.

Aziraphale bakes, so he's probably a decent cook too; that's "housewife" material. He also happens to be very pretty and plump and a blonde, which I've been told are pretty ladylike things to be (/sarcasm)

Sometimes when taking care of a another one the caretaker can neglect themselves of their ACTUAL needs. It will/can lead to:depression,(seperation)anxiety?,paranoia?.Since their mother MIGHT have left them it's either because

2.dont wanna deal with her family anymore

3.divorced

All of this makes Cuphead the 3rd parent (and main since they don't pay attention anymore)

I'm definitely of the belief that their parents were probably absent, quite a bit of proof towards the idea. Maybe it was accidental but I'm here for reading too much into shitty written characters, pfft.

And, quite frankly, it sort of seems like they were homeschooled, because, all though I can totally see Cuphead being a dropout (lol), I feel like Mugman wouldn't have actually gotten into half the shit he did if he was in school. Plus, it'd explain them not being the smartest if their *only* teachers were absent parents (one of which literally just left). And, it'd also add to the fact that they've literally only had each other, since it is genuinely so difficult to make friends when being homeschooled (I'd know, pfft). - But that's just one of many ideas for their upbringing, I don't think we'll ever really have a canon answer towards any of it.

But, Cuphead does give off the vibe of someone who has had to do the parenting and does care, but generally did not get a chance to really be a kid himself, so he's sort of all over the place (relatable, my guy).

ohmygosh y did u put toji wit a newborn on my dash... 😵‍💫 now i gotta talk about how he rlly rlly rlly wants to try his best. i want 2 imagine u have twins (megumi and tsumiki) and he doesnt want u to feel like you're the main parent, so while ur laying on the bed chilling, hes in the bathroom with the two miniscule little things :(( plopping then gently as ever into the shallow cradles slightly below the water level in the bath rub. and he always gets soo nervous when hes reminded of how small they are compared to his big hands. its kinda cute too u sit on the counter sometimes and watch as he uses the softest brush and massage their little heads while they snort and groan and make little baby noises like they do :(( sometimes he side eyes u to see if ur judging him and you just put your hands up and let him do what he needs to do lol.

i thinkk bc he consistently feels remorse for those years u were alone, he goes the extra mile to ensure he keeps up to standard with u after hes out and after u give birth. bc while he doesnt expect u to get up and work out he keeps maintaining his muscle. when he hears about dad bods he goes ???? cuz what😭🤨 he calls em 'lazy fucks' who dont actually do shit for their wives

this is also a part of the reason why since maybe the kids were about a week old he'd asked if u guys ciuld explore breast pumping options, so u could pump out milk in advance when u had an oversupply and that way he could feed the babies on his own without you feeling like you should be depending on as a main caregiver 😭

I'd imagine Atsushi being a very energetic, babbling and bubbly baby! And energetic as in like sensory seeking, rolling around and writhing on the floor, biting and chewing on everything even himself if stressed, echolalia and repeating phrases from the Internet, and be SUPER clingy and loves loves to be carried around, and even play fight as a way to get physical affection. Now the sad part, I'd imagine atsu also being a very sensitive baby, crying very easily. He'd also feel embarrassed to express his needs to Chuuya and Dazai and even be unsure whether to say no or yes to something.

Uh sorry if that was real detailed only on Atsushi... it's cuz I'm an Atsushi fictionkin and i already rlly like how u write cg Dazai and chuuya ^_^!!

Little Atsushi + Caregivers Chuuya and Dazai

☆ First up is age range of course! I view Atsushi as regressing to the 4-6 range! This request kind of sounds more like baby regression? But that actually lines up with how I imagine him! I imagine Atsushi as a big kid, he just gets a lot of comfort from baby stuff. However for the sake of this specific request I’m still gonna drop him a little bit younger, like 2-5! Just a tiny bit more baby potential because honestly who doesn’t love extra baby potential?

⛦ Soukoku babysitting together is almost always them bickering like an old married couple and the little one just getting to watch them like it’s a soap opera. But specifically what was said about the echolalia seemed perfect for this… Hear me out “Chibi’s so small he can’t even reach the top shelf!” “Chibi… Small…” “I can control gravity! I don’t need to be freakishly tall!” “G’av’ty… F… Fr…” *Baby giggling and babbling ensues as he happily attempts to pronounce the big kid words* DO YOU SEE MY VISION HERE?

₊ ⊹ I’m just gonna address each individual thing mentioned in the request because I love them all… Atsushi just rolling around on the floor and giggling to himself? Dazai joins him! Dazai canonically rolls around when he’s thinking sometimes,so he’s more than comfortable with it. He’ll always make light conversation with Atsushi too! “What adventures are we going on today Cub?” Chuuya sits on the couch like a civilized person and even though he says the floor rollers look stupid he always has an incredibly fond look on his face looking at them. He’ll contribute by catching Atsushi in a blanket and rolling him into a burrito!

☆ Biting and chewing on things, Chuuya has bought this kid a million teethers, yet he still chews anything he finds on the floor! Or himself which is an entirely other, even more concerning, issue. Chuuya is a mother hen, he sees Atsushi chewing things he shouldn’t and he’s rushing over with a proper teether. Dazai is much calmer and also causing much more entertaining chaos for himself. He’ll just crouch down next to Atsushi like “What have you got there? You know I bet Chuuya would be better to chew on. Yup it shows him you love him!” He has good intentions though, he knows Chuuya will get the kid a teether. Despite his claims that biting is a love display he’s way over dramatic if Atsushi bites him, claiming the tigers bite has killed him instantly

⛦ Echolalia and repeating phrases! I already kinda covered this but I’m covering it again because I have more thoughts… Chuuya will educationally play games with Atsushi! Stuff like “Can you say ‘Baaa’? Good. What animal makes that sound? A sheep! God job kid” Dazai will just make fun sounds and watch Atsushi try to copy him. Atsushi will definitely randomly say funny stuff from cartoons he watches! Dazai and Chuuya are expected to say the next line but it’s not often they remember honestly, Chuuya even less so

₊ ⊹ Carrying little Atsushi is 100% Chuuya’s job. Dazai has weak little noodle arms and I refuse to believe otherwise. Chuuya on the other hand is insanely strong! Plus you know… Gravity manipulation. He can make Atsushi light as a feather and pick him up with ease! Though Dazai will poke him to catch him off guard and make Chuuya almost drop the little were tiger from the sudden weight shift. Dazai usually gets a solid smack for the trick, which bothered Atsushi at first but that’s just how Soukoku is and he’s learned to just giggle along!

☆ Play fighting I imagine Atsushi just like lightly punching one of his caregivers legs, or tackle hugging them! Dazai. The drama queen. Will collapse to the floor claiming he’s been defeated and hug Atsushi as tightly as he can (The yelling usually draws Chuuya’s attention). Chuuya ‘fights’ back though! He’ll sit on the floor with Atsushi and hold his fists up, pretending to just barely miss all of his punches, and of course he lets Atsushi land all of his! When the weretiger inevitably wins Chuuya picks him up and spins him around as a victory celebration, then he’ll happily just hold the little guy!

⛦ Atsushi is absolutely a sensitive baby, and he cries really easily :( I feel like he’d try to hide his tears since in the orphanage he’d get yelled at for crying, or at the very least made fun of for it. A lot of the time he tries hiding his face under a blanket or behind a plushy. Dazai uses the silly approach, making up a story about how Atsushi’s tears are magical and obviously magic is ok right? Chuuya will just hold Atsushi on his lap and bounce him on his knee, reassuring the boy that it’s ok to cry, telling him what a good thing it is that he feels so strongly, it’s a beautiful thing truly

₊ ⊹ Atsushi doesn’t express his needs in the slightest, luckily Dazai is the ultimate person reader! He can usually figure out what Atsushi wants and get it for him, but when Dazai isn’t around Chuuya is a bit overbearing, practically every minute asking Atsushi if he wants anything, how he’s feeling. He needs to make sure he’s not missing any of Atsushi’s needs!

☆ Wrapping up with pet names! Chuuya uses sweet friendly nicknames! Things like “Kid” “Sweetheart” and “Bud”. Dazai uses his silly, over the top fancy nicknames! Things like “Darling” “Sweetness” and “My baby” (He emphasizes the word my to start a fight with Chuuya because it makes Atsushi happy to hear the reminder that people want to argue about who’s closer to him). And of course they both use “Cub”! It’s just mandatory. I don’t make the rules

Has the gothic literature/gothic media community also been so…rude/pretentious?/gen

Because in a post of my short review of the Nosferatu 2024 film I said that I liked the movie and thought it was amazing, but that the whole thing with Orlok meeting Ellen as a child made me a bit iffy and I already have 2 anons come at me for it accuseimg me of hating the movie when it’s the exact opposite.

I’ve also seen ppl on Twitter, tumblr and other platforms basically make fun of ppl who didn’t like that Orlok met Ellen as a kid or straight up saying that what Orlok did wasn’t grooming. Yes Ellen did want Orlok when she called out to him due to loneliness but that doesn’t make it right, yes the movie isn’t about grooming but idc. She still was literally a child.

Which like yeah the whole dynamic between Ellen and Orlok is supposed to be horrible/terrifying, but if that’s the case then why are you getting mad at and making fun of ppl who’re horrified about it??

Ppl have a right to feel uncomfortable about things especially if it involves grooming. And yes gothic literature/media does have some of this type of stuff in some stories and I know that there’s nuance to gothic media/literature but that doesn’t mean grooming is ok?? Also just because someone rightfully didn’t like the fact that Orlok and Ellen met when she was a child doesn’t mean that they’re pro purity culture??

I’ve also seen ppl making fun of others for not finding Orlok attractive and making fun of others who like conventionally attractive vampires like from twilight and or anime(even tho these are the same ppl who also simp for some of the characters from Interview with a vampire) not to mention others shitting on vampire media with romance plots and or different Dracula stories that involved romance too.

Plus conventionally attractive vampires within gothic media have been around for decades and maybe even centuries and they don’t “ruin the vampire genre”. ALL vampire archetypes are valid whether they be the “ugly” type or the conventionally attractive/humanoid type. Same goes for monster/nonhuman characters in general. I personally like a mix of both.

Ppl shouldn’t be made fun of, ridiculed, nor called “cowards” for having preferences in FICTIONAL non human creatures that don’t even exist.(This is also one of the reasons why I don’t rlly associate with the label monster fucker anymore cuz yall will go after anyone who doesn’t wanna fuck creatures like the xenomorph). Why can’t we just let ppl enjoy things???

It sucks cuz I’ve been obsessed with vampires ever since I was a little girl and while I did/do like pink cutesy stuff I also liked horror and gothic stuff as a kid too and I still do now. Finally here with the start of my Kuki and DCFDTL analysis

Pt. 1: On the portrayal of the characters 

In this essay, I talk about how Kuki and the delightful children in your fic play a huge role in exploring the theme of what it means to grow up in the “right way”. This is done in tandem with Nigel’s own journey of the hard choices you need to make in doing so. Before I begin, I will take this moment to gush about the characters separately. And can I just say that I absolutely love the way you write Kuki because you’re one of the few people that actually Get It. She’s always been a fave of mine because she was like my first instance of Asian rep in children’s media. Out of all the sector v kids, she was the only one who I felt embraced the being a kid aspect more. Maybe it came across as not taking things as serious especially when you compare her with characters like Nigel whose taking it so serious he’s like a mini James Bond. But honestly she’s simply a gal with a lot of whimsy still in her and is sometimes cheeky abt it. I know I’m probably reading too much into it (which is funny cuz that’s literally what I’ve been doing in your ask box now that I think abt it oops) but I always had this lil hc that she’s aware, at some level, of her position as the youngest and the fact that there’s a looming deadline on staying a kid with her friends. She would be the only member of sector v left as everyone would’ve moved on without her (good lord she might even go thru the decom process alone too). & I rlly related to that as a kid who knew that she’d have to sit thru extra tutorial sessions & extracurriculars the moment I hit a certain age. So she probs deals with that by living each day like a surprise party is coming. 

In your fic, I liked that she was the first person Nigel sees again since OP Interviews. It immediately gives the readers the impression of “Oh something definitely changed.” Was that intentional? It carries the same feeling of going back to a childhood haunt and it not feeling the same which what a way to plant the seeds of the themes and all. And her being the Soopreme leader is so (chef’s kiss). If there’s one thing abt me that I’m sure of is that I would always support a char that everyone underestimates ☝️. I always hated the fact that she has always been described as the “flirt” in most supplemental material like WHERE?? Like sure she mostly just gets carried away cuz she’d rather have fun elsewhere that’s my undiagnosed inattentive adhd rep right there. But as I was reading this fic, I could see that you have given her character justice since chap 2. It really came full circle when you had Genki reveal why Kuki got her name. You took something that, in meta and in Canon, had been used as a comedic gag/diss against her (her airheadedness) and you reframed it into something meaningful that captures her character succinctly—a breath of fresh air. I gasped out loud reading it at like 1 am in my timezone. You absolutely got it. I know that you technically did the same with the other characters (and yes there’s much I can also gushbabout that) but this instance in particular rlly got to me as someone who was a fan of this character since I was like 10 myself. 

In a fic with a premise like this that has the stakes raised significantly higher, it would’ve been easy and expected to have the cheerful character turn jaded and serious. And there are instances of this being true like Kuki essentially having to step up and rlly mature into a role with significant generational emotional baggage to it. A literal cursed atlas burden even. But what I like about your portrayal is that you have Kuki herself realise that yes, she was thrusted into a role that’s absolutely bananas but she can still make a banana split with it, y’know? She can be capable and more responsible but still have the capacity in her heart to hold on to that child-like wonder. She can put the needs of kids above her own and still find a way to put her loved ones first, rules be damned. Sometimes you can have your cake AND eat it too (pun definitely intended). I liked how you framed her as the last supreme leader cuz I always saw it as her being the first supreme leader to break free of the tragic cycle that comes from the role.

I’m also so happy to hear you enjoyed my portrayal of Kuki and it resonated with you. She’s always been a fave of mine too, even when I was a kid watching the show! She holds an even deeper meaning to me now, which is why one main thing I needed to do when coming back to finish this was to give her story (and by extension her family) a resolution that did them justice.

And if you’re reading too much into things with that HC then I suppose I am as well because I have a similar one!!! It’s definitely something I keep myself aware of when writing her character. Especially here for this big finale.

I started this fic almost 15 years ago so it’s hard to say what my exact goals were, but I like to think it was intentional to give younger-kid me grace! Despite obvious changes over time, from draft 1 Kuki was ALWAYS meant to be the first one Nigel meets upon returning to Earth and she was always meant to be the Supreme Leader. “Somewhere Only We Know” was a song that inspired a lot of the initial creation of this fic and I definitely think I wanted to weave some of that bittersweet feeling into the narrative, even all the way back then.

It’s also why sector V never fully returns to their treehouse until the very end but that’s a whole other thing haha.

I feel similar feelings on the whole “Flirt” aspect too, don’t worry. I both understand it and not understand it at the same time, but did my best to tackle it anyway!

It would’ve been easy to make her jaded. It would’ve easy, expected, and I think at one point maybe I almost did it. But things that are really worthwhile don’t come easy and I’m glad I remembered that in the end. I try and sum it up the best I can with her last heart to heart moment with Nigel.

Everyone, and Kuki herself even, thinks her whimsy and happiness is a mask. I just wanted to propose that’s just a silly, limiting story she’s been conditioned into believing from both in-canon and fandom meta perspective.

I HAVE to get into characters heads to convey their story. That’s something a mentor pointed out to me once and told me to embrace. So, this is going to sound silly, but I let Kuki write what she believed is the true ending to her story, and that speech to Nigel is what she chose. At least, my interpretation of her. Everyone has a different perspective!

OKAY HELLO THERE FOLKS im here rn to tell you abt a heathers au i have where jd survives !! i wrote most of this vv late at night so forgive me if it doesnt make sense or if its dumb lol, also this is based off the movie bcuz i havent seen the musical yet

-okay so theres multiple versions i have of this au, in one of them jd and veronica arent together, but that made me kinda sad (my poor little mega-crush-on-jd heart doesnt want him to be lonely </3) so i have another au where their shared secrets end up keeping them together, and then that one also has two versions, one where they have a kid and one where they dont (this is proof i have too much free time amd i write shit way too late at night) (also i have way more hcs abt the "they do stay together" version lmao)

-so the bomb didnt work quite as well as he thought it wld. he still got blown the fuck up but not bad enough to kill him (obvi). someone called an ambulance (im not sure who but definitely not veronica /lh), he got rushed off to hospital, he was there for quite a while and got a lot of scars and stuff but somehow he managed to survive (they thought he was a total goner man)

-veronica didnt know he was still alive for a few weeks. the explosion was on the news, but she was majorly avoiding tv altogether at the time (no matter where you are the news is always reporting on some sort of death and tragedy, and it served as WAYYYYY too much of a reminder of what she and jd did). she didnt find out til she actually saw him in person

-she was at the 711 (or wherever the fuck they got the slushies from idk its midnight rn) getting potato chips (yes this is an important detail to me. dont ask me why.) and he happened to be there at the same time

-she totally freaked the hell out when she saw him ("no. no! youre dead! youre dead! youre fucking dead!" "well you see, the thing is, im actually not.") and it took her awhile to come to terms with the situation

-in the "veronica-less" au, they ran into each other a few times after that, veronica refused to talk with him, and he ended up leaving sherwood and going to. um. somewhere else idk thats honestly as far as i got with this version 👍👍👍

-in the "they stay together" version (holy fuck i need proper names for these man), they also kept running into each other, but this time it worked out different yk (god i sound stupid sorry). they were both rlly conflicted abt it. it was like they both wanted to see each other again, but at the same time it felt like the worst thing that cld possibly happen. but you see, it kept happening. and happening. and happening. its like they couldnt  avoid each other. and at some point or another, they started just wanting it to happen. then kind of actively trying to make it happen. and then he finally just asked her out. she said no bcuz she needed some time to think abt it (they did go out a couple weeks later tho)

-(skip back in time a lil here bcuz im a fuckin scatterbrain lmao) when veronica found out jd was still alive she was scared of him yk (i mean i wld be too if my supposed-to-be-dead ex showed up outta nowhere) but she realised that like. he changed. smth happened in his silly lil head when he nearlu died, and he realised that everything that happened was totally fucked up and he actually regrets it and wants to do things different yk. (wanna be a better person? have a near-death experience /j)

-youd expect them to go get slushies when they finally do go on a date. NOPE. they actually go out for breakfast and get waffles (jd absolutely 100% loves waffles and you cannot convince me otherwise)

-at some point or another, veronica buys him little vinyl dinosaur stickers (yknow like the kind you can put on laptops and helmets and stuff). i dont know when this happens. i dont know why this happens. but i know it happens.

-jd kinda wants to be a theatre actor for a lil while, he ends up having tiny roles in a few things but he never rlly has any cool roles yk (im not quire sure why this is part of my au now but its probably just bcuz i wanna watch the musical lmao)

-okay i told you there was two points where this au branches off and congratulations youve just reached the second point 👍👍👍 this is where the path splits between "jd and veronica with no kids" and "jd and veronica with a kid"

-in the "no kids" version, they cant have a kid bcuz theyre scared that they wont be able to raise a child properly and the kid will turn out like they did, and thats the scariest thought in the world to them

-in the "jd and veronica with kids" version (srsly i need the power to create au titles man eueueue), they have a teenage daughter named alina

-theyre super super SUPER protective of her and like theyre always fretting abt whether theyre doing a good job

-they dont tell her abt what they did in '88 bcuz theyre worried abt how shell react, sometimes they think maybe they shld say smth but they always end up agreeing to "just wait til later" (theyre never gonna tell her man theres no way in hell)

-jd knows that the only reason veronica was involved in the deaths was bcuz she was with him, and so he gets extra extra worried whenever alina starts dating someone bcuz hes scared that shell get taken down the same path that he took veronica down all those years ago (which is very unlikely but i mean can ya blame him?)

-jd 100% needs therapy but cant get it bcuz how the fuck do you tell a therapist that you murdered three ppl and then tried to explode yourself. so instead he has a diary he writes in every day and he uses it as sort of self-therapy (i tooooootally didnt just take one of my own personality traits or habits or wtvr the word is and give it to him. totally not. totally. 👍)

-uh thats it for now but i definitely have more au hcs tucked away in my one singular braincell, i just need to find em apparently- also apologies for the excessive parentheses 👍👍👍
