Soooo I have a crush (for the first time in 5 years) on a guy (for the first time in 7 years) and he’s another interpreter that I work with twice a week at the college where I work.

So I just accepted a job as a substitute interpreter for a class tomorrow morning and I hate to admit it but it was half because I knew he interprets that class so there was a 50% chance that I’d be working with him (it’s a 3 hour class so two interpreters are assigned and take turns, so either him or his team called out).

Wellll I know I’ve got it bad because I got the confirmation and I’m going to be interpreting with his team and I am…very disappointed. I hate this, crushes are so stupid. And like, why do I care so much ugh. But also, like this guy is the reason I’m getting my life together because he told me I was anal retentive (not in a mean way, just as an observation, it didn’t sound mean in context) and I was like oh dang he’s right. I’m ruining my life trying to do everything right all the time and make sure everyone likes me and no one is ever mad at me and I could just. Not do that. And he also told me I was a good interpreter and encouraged me to accept more work in more different areas and figure out what I like doing and he can be brutally honest and he’s a really good interpreter so I actually believe him and so I’ve started pushing out of my comfort zone and doing more work and trying to be less worried about what other people think of me and just be happy all because I have a stupid crush on this stupid boy

Cause bioware released some game stats for veilguard and apparently 72% of players redeemed Solas which is like. Okay yeah the game kinda pushes you towards that. But when I think of all the shit I used to have to put up with just for enjoying Anders like at all and…

(This is not me being anti-Solas, I do not care if you love or hate him, but I am gonna say what he’s done is like. Objectively worse than literally every other companion so lmao. And that’s fine! You can still enjoy him! I’m not saying you can’t and it’s important to me that people understand that! I’m just saying he did in fact do objectively morally worse things in game than Anders did and I don’t think that’s really debatable. And I can’t really make my point here without saying that but I do want to make it clear this is not some moral condemnation of Solas enjoyers cause it’s not)

Getting anon hate on the regular, being told “oh you’re allowed to like Anders as long as you regularly talk about how much he sucks”, people gleefully describing how much fun they have killing him ON your posts about the fact that you like him, the devs making jokes about shitty fates for him when fans asked innocent questions about him, the absolute audacity of his writer to say half the shit she did in interviews (about bisexuality and mental illness, most critically), and then being beaten over the head again in inquisition about how Anders is the worst character to ever exist and there’s no redemption for terrorists who lie to you one time in the entire game and he deserves death or worse and that’s it

And now… 72% of people are down to redeem the guy who lies to you for 2 games straight and who did a lot of questionable things that includes creating the fucking blight and. Like. I guess I’m glad that Solas fans can live in a world where they aren’t constantly harassed and can give their ship like. A pretty damn good ending all things considered. And that the devs love Solas and actually give the option for that happy ending and have characters go to bat for Solas throughout the game and the most annoying thing they have to see are people making scrambled egg memes. I would not wish anyone to have to deal with the shit Anders fans had to put up with back then cause it sucked. It really sucked. And I’m glad it’s not being repeated with a different character, if nothing else

But like. Man there really is a difference when the writers actually like the character who does the thing, huh

I think what is primarily being discussed in his case is a) he left his wife and b) he started a cult to erase people’s memories, generally nonconsentually.

Now we don’t actually know all that much about fiddlefords relationship with his wife, there are things that suggest he maybe wasn’t prioritising his family when he was with Ford (I.e. the Christmas presents) but I think it’s unfair to write off someone’s headcanon or theory as “wrong” when there’s no definite answer.

The cult is probably definitely a bad.

BUT! What’s so revolutionary about Gravity Falls is that it has well written characters that are complex and with flaws. I think just about every main character does something bad or selfish at one point or another but it’s also always perfectly justifiable to the character too. There is always personal reason for their actions so nothing is technically black and white “bad”.

I’m not pointing fingers but I reckon some people who maybe aren’t so familiar with fandom spaces or consuming media in a more critical way seem to have a sort of mindset which means that in order for you to like a character they have to be entirely good (or bad - but if they’re bad you have to admit they’re bad and that’s why you like them). And of course people could also take the personal justification and turn it into actual justification.

A lot of the conflict in the show is morally ambiguous and the characters motives are generally easy to understand and even empathise with. Most people that genuinely enjoy the characters - or at least, speaking for myself - don’t excuse their flaws but enjoy the complexities of them!

The Gryffindor common room was alive with chaos as Sirius, Remus, and Peter huddled on the couch, theorizing about Regulus’ sneaky link. Sirius couldn’t sit still, Peter was suspiciously invested, and Remus already looked like he regretted being part of the conversation.

“So,” Remus began, pinching the bridge of his nose, “we know Regulus has been sneaking out more than usual, and he’s definitely seeing someone.”

“And I know it’s a Gryffindor,” Peter chimed in. “I saw him leaving the common room last week, looking all smug and suspicious.”

Sirius groaned dramatically, flopping onto the armrest. “Disgusting. My brother, with a Gryffindor? It’s betrayal!”

“You’re a Gryffindor,” Remus pointed out.

“Exactly! Betrayal!”

Then Peter, who had been doing Peter things (digging through the couch for no reason), pulled out a clue. “Wait, what’s this?” He held up a bright red jumper, his eyes widening.

“Is that… Regulus’ sneaky link’s jumper?” Remus raised an eyebrow.

“It has to be!” Peter gasped. “I saw him wearing it the other day!”

Sirius snatched it out of Peter’s hands, inspecting it closely. “Hang on… this looks familiar.”

Remus groaned. “Don’t—”

“THIS IS MY JUMPER!” Sirius declared proudly.

“Sirius, it’s not yours.” Peter said flatly.

“It could be.” Sirius argued. “Maybe I left it in the house, and Regulus gave it to his gross Gryffindor fling as a trophy. Ugh.”

Remus didn’t even bother responding.

Moments later, the portrait hole swung open and James strolled in, hair windswept. He froze when he saw the jumper.

“Oh, thank Merlin!” James exclaimed, snatching it from Sirius’ hands. “I’ve been looking for this everywhere!”

Silence.

Sirius, Peter, and Remus all stared, realization dawning in unison.

Sirius shot to his feet, pointing accusingly. “IT’S YOU. YOU’RE THE SNEAKY LINK!”

James blinked, confused. “What are you—”

“Regulus is hooking up with you?” Peter blurted out.

“Wait, REGULUS?!” James spluttered, the jumper still in his hands. His face slowly drained of color. “Oh… shit.”

*Sirius collapsed into hysterics*

James, telling Regulus later that night:

James scribbled a note in his messy handwriting and passed it to Regulus discreetly: “So… your brother knows. This is awkward.”

Regulus, reading it, completely unfazed: “And?”

James, pacing back and forth, chewing on his quill: “AND??? SIRIUS SCREAMED FOR TEN MINUTES.”

Regulus, casually flipping through a book: “Sounds like a you problem.”
