Same Age AUs are so fascinating to me, and of the ones I've seen I really like them. In particular if we have Reigen and Shigeo both as middle schoolers because instead of an older mentor figure Shigeo is ending up with another kid. He gets to have a friend his age who gets to drag him around to do stuff and it's nice, really nice to have a friend he can relate to. Meanwhile Reigen has soooo many ✨issues✨ but hey he's great at bullshitting and is getting Shige to open up some more, while on the flip side he's also getting a friend and can go out and do more now that he has someone to do stuff with. Plus they make great business partners so this is going amazingly :D

Another version I like is if this is the result of some time travel shenanigans, mostly because I like seeing a more stark contrast between kid Reigen and adult Reigen, especially through Shigeo's eyes because... this isn't his shishou, not exactly, because kid Reigen doesn't have the years of life experience that helps his words hold more meaning, even if kid Reigen is still a great talker and bullshitter. He can't say everything right that Shige needs to hear and its a bit off putting, especially if kid Reigen has different views on being "special" and whatnot (considering... "I want to be someone"). But there's still elements there that is just so Reigen in the way he talks and the way he moves that its like. Yeah, this is a kid, but it's the same person and everyone can see just how Reigen is, this is how he started. He's not Shigeo's shishou but he's still Reigen.

thank you!! and as much as i love the idea of them cooking together, i think it would be safer better if only one of them cooks and the other is just there in the kitchen as well for company. because it could either end up with them working really well or end up with them bumping into each other a lot and something gets burnt and a lot of yelling happens (definitely not projecting rn). so i think they'd decide on who cooks or just order takeout if they're too tired to cook.

honestly i was sold on reigen as a character the Moment he said the line "you felt that cornered?" bc to me that moment def seemed like the type of thing most adults would snap at a child for. when children are told not to do something so drastic (especially if they've experienced the consequences of it before, like mob w ritsu) and they then proceed to Do It, there's a good chance they felt forced to do so, and there's an even better chance that they feel horrible before, during, and after doing it. they are afraid to be yelled at and they are Angry that they're going to be yelled at in the first place bc it was their only choice. a lot of adults simply don't bother to dig into it more, and they see this surface level Kid "Acting Out" Routine and they blame the kid and not the circumstances that shaped that behavior

i expected mob to get an earful abt it, or at least one of those eccentric but oddly wise lectures, but instead reigen said that. "you felt that cornered?" bc he Knows mob and he knows the poor kid would never try to hurt somebody else unless it was absolutely dire. even with ritsu's explanation—that mob had no choice in order to protect his brother—i still kinda expected that evil little "doesn't matter, don't harm others" slap in the face against the idea of self-defense. but reigen subverts expectations, like he has a talent of doing

there's something so compassionate about the phrasing of it, too. so empathetic. so quietly horrified that grown people would make a child feel like lashing back is his only option. they're turning a kid into a hunted animal, and reigen is beginning to realize just how cornered mob must've felt, to fall back onto something he never wanted in the first place

and don't even get me fuckign Started on ritsu's "they had a rule like that...?"

I adore the fact that in so many other stories, Mob Psycho would’ve concluded with the World Domination Arc. After all, it has the big, climatic battle with the ensemble cast versus the overarching villain. They win, and everyone goes home, all’s well that ends well, right?

Except the story doesn’t end there. Because Mob has yet to reckon with this internal, antagonist force that has haunted the narrative since the very beginning: Himself.

When Mob comes face-to-face with ???% at long last, he says: I am Kageyama Shigeo.

This isn’t a conflict with a villain, or another esper, or even a separate entity that resides inside Mob’s body. It is something far more personal, and far more relatable.

???% is the culmination of everything Mob’s held back. Not just emotions like anger or fear. Even his desires, like his crush on Tsubomi. All muted by his efforts not to hurt anybody with his powers. Mob has come such a long way, but he’s still restraining his feelings so tightly that the moment his control wavered, ???% took over.

But the conflict isn’t the destruction ???% is wreaking just by walking through the city. The conflict is Mob refusing to accept this part of himself he’s suppressed for so long.

And ???% is right! Every attempt to stop him thus far has failed. Because he isn’t meant to be stopped. Mob has to reconcile with the parts of himself that he won’t acknowledge.

And it’s the most difficult thing Mob has ever had to do! This is the part of himself that hurt his brother; that hurt his friends and decimated so much of the city. Reconciling with it means accepting that Mob hurt those people, whether he wanted to or not. It means accepting all facets of himself, even ones he’s not proud of or wishes he could change but cannot.

Mob has grown so much in this latest season alone, he hasn’t had any explosions, and he felt confident enough in his own abilities to actually ask Tsubomi out, which was something the Mob of two seasons ago could never imagine.

But what about the advice Reigen gave him for his confession to Tsubomi?

His true self, in its totality. This is what Mob has struggled with the entire story. This is why his confession to Tsubomi is the culmination of his character arc. Expressing his feelings means exposing his true self to someone else, even with the fear of rejection.

And while we’re on that subject. Let’s talk about Reigen. Right after he gives this advice to Mob, he says this about himself:

It is the height of irony (and tragedy) that Mob and Reigen admire each other’s strengths so much, yet have no idea they struggle with the same exact fear: that if the people they cared for found out who they truly were, they would reject them. It is why Reigen relies on lies and why Mob suppresses himself.

It is also why Reigen has never actually witnessed ???% until now. It is why Mob has never heard Reigen admit the truth about himself out loud.

And that’s why the final arc feels like such a gut-punch in the best of ways. What is harder than accepting who you are, and hoping for others to accept you as you are? Even at your most deceitful, or your most destructive? Mob Psycho ends with the Confession Arc because that’s the very heart of the story.
