haterisms beneath the cut
this hater poll brought to you by....a series of Bad Mcfucking Takes i had to read with my own eyeballs. seriously did we read the same book or not.
explanations:
"jiang cheng killed wei wuxian": jiang cheng did not kill wei wuxian in any version of the story. in mdzs wei wuxian died from backlash and in cql wei wuxin chose to let go of lan wangji after jiang cheng stabbed the cliff face. you can argue till the cows come home about how responsible jiang cheng is for wei wuxian's demise, but "jiang cheng killed wei wuxian" is just factually incorrect.
"jiang cheng abuses jin ling": jiang cheng does not abuse jin ling. first, the narration goes out of its way to establish that jiang cheng does not hit jin ling, specifically in a setting where hitting children is normalized and expected. in fact, wei wuxian says that jin ling is bratty specifically because he's never been hit. second, jin ling is also clearly comfortable talking back to jiang cheng and needling him in a way jiang cheng definitely was not with his own parents. even when jiang cheng is actively losing it when he captures wei wuxian in qinghe, jin ling remains completely unruffled - which speaks to how much jin ling takes for granted that he is safe with jiang cheng.
"jiang cheng could have easily helped the wen remnants, he just didn't": antis love to act like yunmeng jiang could have easily taken in the wemnants and jiang cheng simply chose not to because he was a hater/super jelly/various synonyms for ontologically evil. which is not the fucking case. learn to read. yunmeng jiang's own position post sunshot was very weak - they were a great sect in name only and were excluded from the alliance tying the three other great sects together - and jiang cheng could not politically afford to protect wei wuxian after wei wuxian alienated lanling jin. that's why jiang cheng says "if you insist on doing this, i can't protect you," and why wei wuxian then tells jiang cheng to let him go. because they both understand this. come on
"jiang cheng forced jiang yanli to marry jin zixuan": jiang yanli as a character makes so many sacrifices for her family and her brothers. her relationship with zixuan is like the one thing she chooses for herself. she loves him!! the tragedy in wei wuxian killing jin zixuan is that yanli genuinely loved zixuan!! ngl i think antis argue this purely to try to exonerate wei wuxian: if jiang yanli didn't love jin zixuan then wei wuxian donutting him isn't a problem anymore, apparently. this is the result of people thinking of jiang yanli as purely a thing for wei wuxian, rather than a human being in her own right.
"jiang cheng should have protected wei wuxian from yu ziyuan": this one is annoying because jiang cheng was also a child. when a child is abused, it is the fault of the abuser, not the fault of another child who is also subject to the whims of the abuser. come on.

the conversation jiang cheng and wei wuxian have before their arranged fight after wwx settles in the burial mounds is so intense but it’s also so enlightening about their mindsets because jc goes into with this idea that wwx’s current actions are reckless, ill-thought decisions that he can talk wwx out of whereas wwx is fully aware of the deep shit he is in and knows exactly what awaits him and yet he chooses to stand by his morals. it’s the way at the start of the conversation, wwx says:
“what other path can I take, aside from staying in a jail of my own making?”
and this says everything about his understanding of what he’s doing while supporting the wen remnants and what kind of consequences that will bring him. but jc goes on to basically list out everything wwx will face – how he’s being ostracized, how siding with the wens will lead to doom – and i know part of it might be expository information, an insight into the cultivation world’s slimy ways but it is also kind of funny how jc thinks he needs to let wwx know all of this, as if wwx made a hasty move and will back out once he knows he’s starting his own downfall. but wwx painfully, thoroughly knows and that is what makes his stance with the wens all the more powerful, all the more selfless, all the more commendable. the very points that stop jc from supporting the wens make wwx more determined to help them. when jc fears ridicule, wwx fears for the lives of the wen–their fallout was inevitable, even without all the other conflicts they were embroiled in. they’re such different people, fundamentally, at their cores (the pun is very ironic ik 😭). while jc questions the lack of precedent, worries over straying from the conformist path, wwx readily accepts the unpaved road and walks it, not out of some misguided hero complex as jc suggests but because that is the right thing to do even if everyone’s deadset on proving him otherwise.

Fic Finder
Nov 14th
~*~
1. Hello, I am looking for a fic that I think is wangxian. It was based on the ballad The Highwayman, and it ends tragically. It should be a complete work. Thank you!
Found by asker as a Star Wars fic -
Nov 14 #1 requester, I think I’ve found it but it’s a Star Wars fic. If a wangxian version exists, I’m happy to have it, but I think it’s solved. Always fun separating out the fic memories from a fandom obsession transition period…
~*~
2. I hope you can help me find this one. It was a Twitter threadfic. In that LWJ proposed to WWX but WWX said no because he didn’t believe in marriage. They go to a wedding and the groom gets cold feet but LWJ helps him. Seeing that made WWX want to marry him but by then it was LWJ who changed his mind and WWX was heartbroken .
~*~
3. There was this fix where wwx was a funeral arranger? Or something like that and lwj and wwx established relationship but then madame yu and her husband died and it focused on like grieving and stuff, there was also yanli and jiang Cheng and showed like the sibling bond I can’t find it I been trying for ages now

4. Hello! I'm looking for a couple of fics I lost sight of a long while ago!
A) The first one took place during the Cloud Recesses Arc: all the swords are stolen at night by 'Wei Wuxian' who is later found badly injured in the forest. He had been attacked by the future Wei Wuxian/ Yiling Laozu.
B) The Second One took place after the Siege, and I'm pretty sure the spirits of the Wen Remnants attacked others? I don't remember much about it, I'm sorry.
Thank you in advance and I appreciate your service a lot

6. Heyy! I'm looking for two fics:
A) Omegaverse, modern au, wei ying is an omega and jc is an alpha and wy lives w the jiangs and i think there's this sort of expectation that he's gonna marry jc or atleast that's what jc wants, but wy gets pregnant by lwj and moves out after a fight then yeras later lsz and jl go on a date and that's how wy and jc meet again, cos jc's there when wy goes to dinner to meet jl's parents and uncle and turns out its the jiangs obviously, and basically jc's really stalkery and jealous after that but lz protects him.
B) modern au, omegaverse, lxc goes to pick up lwj from school and finds out a kid jc is his mate. he's disgusted and goes away for a while. when he comes back jc is older now. i don't remeber much but wy and lz are the side couple and wy is a beta as far as i can remeber, and there's a scene where jc wakes up in the hospital and wy and lz are kisisng and jc's kinds like fucking finally yk but yea!
Thank you! Love you guys!!
@body-inabyss-heart-inparadise

I recognise the fic though I can't remember the name. The author deleted all their works from AO3 a few months ago, if I recall correctly. I know it's also been on other fic finders.
FOUND? 6a is Meant To Be (But Not That Way), dm me ~dripping-moonlight

7. Hello,
Ficfinder request.
Modern but with magic or cultivation. LWJ is a magical creature(?) hunter working for some kind of agency to protect humans.
The rest of the sects(from my memory) are families of magic creatures(?) but WWX has some kind of ‘half-breed’ status so when he goes through the magic/darkness detectors at LWJs work he doesn’t set them off.
Much of the fic is from LWJs pov but there is a great chapter from WWXs pov when he fully lets his powers out and we get badass WWX.
I feel like it was mdzs+ some anime but i don’t know which anime. 🥺 @empiresprince

8. Hello, I am looking for a fic, where Wei Wuxian runs away from Lotus Pier, right after he was brought there and Jiang Cheng kicked him out and threatened with dogs (when they were children). I think that Wei found his father? Not sure, but I have a feeling that this fic was found here and I forgot to save it. Thank you in advance.

9. Hi, I’m looking for a fic where after wwx is found during the sunshot campaign Jiang Cheng pretends his demonic cultivation is just the Jiang clan’s secret technique and uses that to keep the other sects off their back. I’m pretty sure it was from jc’s pov, and compared wwx, jc, and jyl to different bodies of water at the start of it (though I could be wrong about that part)? Thank you for the help
FOUND? Three kinds by apathyinreverie (T, 7k, wangxian, JC & WWX, canon divergence, protective JC, twin prides of yunmeng dynamics, soft WWX, smitten LWJ, worldbuilding, fix-it, golden core reveal, fluff, siblings)

10. Hello! I'm looking for a wangxian reality TV fic. It's a dating show and lwj is a participant while wwx is his camera man. They try to keep their relationship a secret but by the end the crew discovers them and has wwx brought in as lwjs partner. I think lwj proposes to wwx at the end and that Mo xuanyu was involved as the participant who stayed the longest

11. Hello! I'm so sorry to bother you but I've tried doing all my own searches and just can't find it. There's a fic series where Madame Yu cut off Wei Wuxian's hand before the fall of lotus pier and the Wen siblings took him in to help him recover. He ended up leaving the Jiang sect and starting his own and he and Wen Qing became amazing at making spiritual prosthetics. I know it's a series and I know I loved it but I can't find it anywhere! 12. Hello! I started reading a Tangled x MDZS fic which I remember being pretty long. It was with lwj as Rapunzel and wwx as Flynn Rider. I started reading it but then decided I don't want to and now I regret it 😭. The part that I read was exactly like the start of the movie, with wwx complaining about how his wanted poster looked and all that jazz.
FOUND! we sit in the sunset glow by moonsteps (T, 36k, WangXian, Tangled AU, Fairy Tale Elements, Strangers to Lovers, Slow Burn, Curses, Sharing a Bed, Minor Violence, Traveling, Falling In Love) for the tangled AU, it sounds like it could be it starts just like the movie with Wei ying complaining to lil apple abt how he looks in his wanted poster😂

13. Hey buddy, Hope you are doing well!
I'm searching for a fic. The only thing I remember is just a scene. The cloud recesses is hosting lectures and and guest disciples from all sects are visiting. I think it is after the war with the wens. It's a cannon divergence I think. The scene I'm referring to is, two of the disciples are from Su She's (Su Minshan, I think the full name is) and the sect heir is just a kid below 10. At some point others makes fun of him and his sister when they present gifts at the beginning of the lectures and LWJ kinda defends them, I think....
That's all I remember. Thanks in advance! @grrumpywoof

14. Hello , I am looking for a fic where Jang Cheng dies instead of Jang Yanli at nightless city. Then she moves back to Lotus Pier and becomes sect leader, and lan wangji ends up living there too. Also, wei wuxian is brought back to life earlier, and by xue yang. lan wangjis back takes longer to heal.
Thank you!

15. I'm in search of two time travel fics: A) WWX has traveled back to CR. LXC hears him playing dizi (wangxian among others) and recognizes it as something LWJ composed (possibly same fic, though I may be conflating details, he realizes in lessons WWX is pretending to be less skilled at the dizi than he actually is). B) LWJ travels back in time from right after the 30 lashes and ends up in the burial mounds early w/the wens, still seriously injured and bleeding through his robes. Thank you guys! @moku-youbi

17. Hello! I would like to ask for help in finding a wangxian fic:
Modern with magic
I remember that Wei Ying got injured in Xuanwu cave together with Lan Zhan. In the Lan hospital he was denied help because he was fired (?) from the Lan org and later received a bill to pay for expenses.
He is saved by Wens.
Few years later Lan Zhan and Lan Xichen seek his help in some kind of case. Wei Ying says something along the lines of "I don't work with Lans".
Later Lan bros find out it was Su She's fault in how WY was treated.
I would really appreciate your help in finding it! ❤️‍🩹 @popugaj-ara

Why Does Jiang Cheng Get All the Hate While Nie Mingjue Gets a Pass?
I genuinely don't get why Jiang Cheng is the only one who gets so much blame and hate for not helping the Wen Remnants. After all, the main reason he chose not to help them is out of fear that his newly rebuilt clan couldn’t survive the fallout of offering them protection. Regardless of whether you believe this to be true or not, that's what Jiang Cheng honestly believes.
But you know who did have the power to challenge the Jin Clan, has no compunction in using said power (proven during Xue Yang debacle) and prided himself as being a righteous man, but still pushed for the deaths of everyone associated with the Wen name just bc of his personal hatred? That's Nie Mingjue.
During the emergency clan meeting after Wei Wuxian absconded with the Wen Remnants, two major clan leaders tried to speak on behalf of the Wen Remnants and each time they were instantly shut down by Nie Mingjue.
First, Jiang Cheng:
Jiang Cheng deeply furrowed his brow and rubbed his temple, which never stopped throbbing. He drew a soundless breath. “…My apologies to the Sect Leaders. You see, the Wen cultivator that Wei Wuxian wanted to save was named Wen Ning. He and his sister Wen Qing showed the two of us mercy during the Sunshot Campaign. That is why…”
“Showed mercy how?” Nie Mingjue demanded. “Wasn’t the Wen Clan of Qishan the culprit behind the Jiang Clan of Yunmeng’s annihilation?”
[Side note: Cutting Jiang Cheng off mid-sentence here wasn’t just rude, but it also undermined JC's authority and displayed NMJ's lack of respect towards JC as a fellow clan leader in front of everyone. Plus, the most egregious part here though, was the way NMJ callously threw in the destruction of the Jiang Clan, JC's personal tragedy to his face as a point to shut him down without any real regard to JC himself.]
Next, Lan Xichen:
After some thought, Lan Xichen answered. “I know a little about Wen Qing. There has never been talk of her being involved in any of the massacres associated with the Sunshot Campaign.”
“But she also never stopped any of them,” Nie Mingjue pointed out.
“How could she have done so, when she was one of Wen Ruohan’s trusted aides?” Lan Xichen asked.
Nie Mingjue was indifferent to such logic. “She remained silent and raised no objections while the Wen Clan committed atrocities. That is no different from watching from the sidelines. She can’t presume to enjoy preferential treatment when the Wens were fanning the flames of disorder, then refuse to bear the bitter consequences and pay the price when they were overthrown.”
Lan Xichen fell silent.
So my point is, I think it's unfair that Jiang Cheng gets so much heat and condemnation for not helping the Wen Remnants, while Nie Mingjue, the man who was basically condoning and supporting the Jin Clan's abuse and try to justify it under the guise of righteousness at that, barely faces any level of hate and criticism in this fandom. I think the later is far more despicable and deserving of condemnation than the former.

Gods this fandom sometimes, I swear. I'm sorry I read two deeply bad takes back to back, and I have to rant. I'm sure others have said it better than I, but really. Come on. I actually have to wonder if people who talk about the extras actually read them because...
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji didn't leave the cultivation world in canon. They elope, and then they come back. The fact they're not involved in the bigger politics is... pretty much to be expected, but they very much do participate in the day to day lives of the Lan sect. They go where the chaos is to night hunt, they teach, Lan Wangji comforts his brother in his seclusion, and Wei Wuxian meets some new Lan disciples.
As for the cottage fantasy... Again, I honestly have to wonder if the people talking about it actually read the extra it's in? Because it's just that. A fantasy. A dream. It's basically a representation of Wei Wuxian's wants for a domestic life, something he definitely has now! He's always been characterised as someone who wants to help others and who loves cultivation. Why would you think the dream is to be taken literally?
And the idea that Wei Wuxian has 'several important relationships just floating there', that he's not dealing with... Where? Which ones? He teaches the juniors and grows closer to Jin Ling. He doesn't exactly interact with Lan Xichen, but he asks after him. He meets Mianmian again and wishes her well. He asks after Wen Ning after Lan Sizhui comes back then has some father-son bonding moments with him!
Nie Huaisang and Wei Wucian aren't close. They were friendly once, but they didn't ever meet after the lectures. I don't see how that qualifies as an "important" relationship, especially with Nie Huaisang never openly admitting to his part in Wei Wuxian's resurrection. But even then, Wei wuxian says he'll be keeping a close eye on him, so one can imagine they meet again at some point.
As for Jiang Cheng... what more do you want Wei Wuxian to do exactly? Even if you want a reconciliation, why can't Jiang Cjeng be he one to actually grow up and do the work for once? He's the one who never apologized. He's the one who is still openly hostile in the extras. If Wei Wuxian wants to move on and not interact with him, he's well within his right to do that, given how Jiang Cheng treated him. Hell, he's more generous than most since he encourages Jin Ling to talk to Jiang Cheng. If I'd been treated by someone like Jiang Cheng treated Wei Wuxian and saw him hit our nephew several times, I certainly wouldn't encourage them to meet. (But that's Wei Wuxian for you, the moral ideal and better than all of us.)
Anyway, I really don't understand why people insist on making Wangxian have a sadder ending than the one they actually did. It's a HEA for them, sorry guys. And yeah, maybe Wei wuxian has some trauma to work on... but the whole point of the character is that he doesn't let his trauma define him. That he wants to forgives, forgets and moves on.
(Also, just because he doesn't have a breakdown or the cultivation equivalent of therapy in the extra doesn't mean he's not working on them? He finally is at peace, with a solid support network. Maybe he does talk about his past hurts with Lan Wangji - Lan Wangji certai ly knows when to comfort him when he needs it. But the narrative point of the extras is to show they're moving on from the past! And you know what, sometimes the beat thing to do to heal is to do just that. They're living their best lives, deal with it.)
And finally... shit did you really read the whole book and come to the conclusion Wei Wuxian should have 'learned to accept help'? Who the fuck offered help? Who did he refuse?
(Don't say Lan Wangji. 1) I love him, but "Come back to Gusu" is very much not an obvious offer to help, and when Wei Wuxian understandably misunderstands him, he never manages to correct it.
And 2) once Wei Wuxian tells him explicitly he's not leaving the Wen remnants behind, Lan Wangji understands and backs off. He approves! I'm sure he'd do more if he could, but just like Jiang Yanli, he can't!)
Jiang Cheng literally said, 'No one will help you, no one is on your side' (and then made sure that was true by saying Wei Wuxian was the enemy of the cultivation world). Jin Zixuan chose to ask the one who was ambushed to disarm rather than the 300 cultivators attacking him and lunged at him when Wei Wuxian refused to comply (because he'd be killed if he did!!). How is that help?
Who else tried to help? Whose help did Wei Wuxian reject?
Wei Wuxian was presented with a series of bad choices and took the best he could, the ones aligned with his principles, accepting he'd have to face consequences at some point but also knowing it was still worth it. He's not the one who failed or made a fatal mistake or betrayed his word.
Rant over. Sorry about that.

#wheres the essay OP#OP wheres the essay#meander i cannot stress enough how willing i am to hear you go off on this topic
fjdlkgjdfljkgh okay! @fenrirsclaws if you really want to hear about this, i don't mind sharing! Because I really did write a whole-ass essay (or just rambled like a madman for several hours)!!!!
I do feel like I need to put in a disclaimer before I start copy and pasting (and editing a little) that this entire thing started bc i was talking with a friend about how fandom half-jokingly calls wwx a working class hero (when we both think he isnt), when jgy should probably be considered one for real, considering he clawed his way to the top and then created the watchtowers, a public good made to defend non-cultivators in remote areas.
And then we both found this meta, elaborating a little bit on the class dynamics in mdzs, and how the interpretation of wwx being incredibly class conscious isn't entirely accurate (and with some delicious jgy meta too and his place in the gentry/cultivation world), and since i've been reading svsss and 2ha, my brain went brrr and decided to compare and contrast.
SO!
gonna start with 2ha bc i think it's the simplest place to start AND since it's from a different author, the intent and themes are already way way different.
so to start off with, Mo Ran(the protagonist of 2ha)'s situation is the most similar to WWX's. Mo Ran also spent years on the street as an orphan before being taken in by a sect leader and his family. There is a stark difference in how it plays out, and why I think Mo Ran is way more class conscious than WWX is from this experience.
For starters, Mo Ran spent much, MUCH longer trying to survive on the streets than WWX did. I think Mo Ran's mom died when Mo Ran was around the same age was when WWX's parents died? But Mo Ran stayed on the streets until the age of 15, unlike WWX who got taken in a couple years in.
Second, where they start off from as orphans is even different? Like, WWX is the son of rogue cultivators, one of whom is in good standing with a sect leader, and the other was the disciple of the immortal Baoshen Sanren. As far as I know, Mo Ran only knows his mom who was just a regular every day working woman. Which kinda means that 1) people with means would be looking out for WWX (iirc Jiang Fengmian actually went looking for him, which is why he's found soon-ish) and 2) WWX's lineage isn't actually that bad. He gets called a "son of a servant" when he's acting out/breaching etiquette, but for the most part he is accepted by the cultivation world/gentry just fine. Mo Ran, however, is well-aware that other sects and cultivators would spit on him for being a nobody.
Third, even their experiences as orphans on the streets was night and day in that sense that like. WWX got chased by dogs and didn't have enough to eat, but I don't think we're given much more than that. It's enough to inform us of his trauma and why he thinks and acts in certain ways, but I don't think we get anything particularly pointed in regards to class. In contrast, Mo Ran's mom was busking on the streets by dancing on top of poles when some rich cunt stops by and is like "oh this isn't nearly impressive enough. i'll give you 10 gold pieces if you do it with shards of glass/knives beneath you." and his mom doesn't want to do it, but it's MONEY and her son is starving so she does and oh look at that she gets injured. And the rich bitch doesn't even give her the money she said she would. None of the bystanders rush her to medical care. One person offers her a single copper piece in "sympathy" from a bag full and clinking from coin. And now his mom can't even perform to get even the meager amount of coins they were getting already.
So Mo Ran starts begging on the streets too and there's one scene where he comes across this rich young master who's eating dumplings by just. munching the middle piece and throwing the wrappers/dough to his dog. And Mo Ran begs to have the wrappers instead and the rich young master refuses, makes fun of him, has him kicked and beaten away, and Mo Ran is viscerally aware in this moment that he is worth less than a dog.
Fourth! Mo Ran actually gets taken in the sect leader of Sisheng Peak by lying that he's his nephew. Technically the sect leader makes the assumption and Mo Ran just doesn't correct him, but he is aware that he is there under false pretenses and if he tells the truth, they might kick him out. WWX has a shaky and dysfunctional family dynamic with the Jiangs bc of his origins, but I don't think he thought he would ever get kicked out. He was head disciple! He was going to be Jiang Cheng's right hand man! None of that screams "if you do even one wrong move you will be kicked out", especially since he was always acting shamelessly? It's a well-known fact about him? If he was in danger of that, it probably would have happened a long time ago.
And we know that Mo Ran's insecurity of his place and position is still a big part of his life, since the curse Mo Ran is placed under in the story plays with this insecurity of his by making him think his shizun is looking down on him for being poor and illiterate and some mutt dragged in from the streets when that couldn't be FURTHER from the truth.
to move on to themes….. MDZS has some classism going on, but i don't think it's necessarily one of the points it's trying to make. The class dynamics are mostly there to inform on characters' backstories and motivations, but it's not really what it's talking about. If there was, it would probably something along the lines of "The rich and powerful decides what's fair to whoever, including the other gentry. They will twist your reputation to suit their ends." Because MDZS very much a story centered around the struggles of cultivators and their sects, not around what non-cultivators and regular people are going through, and thus it's rich and powerful in-squabbling. No one is immune. A Bad Reputation can RUIN you, and it can be very VERY easy to manipulate people and the general populace to believe a certain thing. (If anything, MDZS is almost more of a cautionary tale against believing rumours, and a quiet urge to be willing to show people grace and empathy, bc people are in fucked up situations, making impossible choices.)
2ha on the other hand, actually DOES focus a LOT, or at least a lot more, on the struggles of non-cultivators. There's the Lower Cultivation Realm and the Upper Cultivation Realm, and the Upper Realm obvs has the more powerful sects and stronger cultivators but they work on "commission". The peasants have to pay them in order for them to show up and help. Sisheng Peak is a Lower Realm sect and actually isn't all that wealthy bc they make it a point to redistribute that wealth to EVERYONE, even the non-cultivators. You will be fed and sheltered and taken care of in its area. Chu Wanning, Mo Ran's shizun, is from the Upper Cultivation Realm and he LEFT bc he believed in what the Upper Realm preached and was so disappointed and angry that they didn't actually follow through and wanted to help. And he DOES. he CARES. he creates these automatons for villagers to use that will protect them from demons and other ghoulies and hands them out for FREE (or for very little? It's been a while since i read the first book). There's a mission in the actual book where he speaks with a ghost and finds out this poor girl was taken advantage of by this rich merchant family and murdered so their son could further their standing by marrying someone else, and he's so fucking pissed at them that he starts WHIPPING them for their cruelty, while calling them out for how awful they are. And he does it even though he knows he's breaking the sect rules, and calmly marches himself to the punishment hall because even if it was for a good cause, he knows he broke the rules and needs to be punished for it. (If we're going to call ANY cultivator the hero of the common folk it should be CHU WANNING.)
I don't know if you care about getting spoilers for 2ha (though lmao already kind of late for that), and I don't know the complete story since the story isn't fully translated and released yet, and finding fan translations is kind of difficult, so im mostly working off of the wiki and spoilers from fic, but I'm pretty sure the reason why the cruelty and callousness of the rich (from both cultivators and non-cultivators) gets a lot more focus in 2ha than mdzs, is bc it's an actual plot point. Like. A major fucking plot point. As is Chu Wanning's unexpected kindness.
OK NOW SVSSS.
So Luo Binghe vs WWX. Tbh he has a similar sort of start to Mo Ran too, in that he had an adoptive mom, but then died when he was young still, and he survived on the streets until he finally made his way to Cang Qiong Mountain and joined the sect. In contrast to both of them though, he was mercilessly bullied by his peers and his shizun (at least in the original story Shang Qinghua, AKA Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky (his username online) wrote).
I was mostly thinking about him in contrast with WWX bc like. WWX is a well-known part of the gentry, y'know? He was an outcast when he tried to defend the Wen, but if he renounced them, he probably would've been accepted back. And people were against him for doing necromancy and desecrated graves and loved ones dead bodies. Luo Binghe was just a kid, who wasn't accepted bc he was poor and not One of Them. (though his original Shizun did have more complex reasons, but well. 1) 'Twas lost with the outline, so the only one who knows is Airplane. And 2) i think the reason boiled down to "I also went through hell being poor and a slave and came out a bitter, cynical man, how the FUCK are you still so happy and hopeful?" which like. not great. Cycle of abuse continues.)
The last straw was when his shizun pushed him into the Endless Abyss for being half heavenly demon, something he has no control over, and he came back stronger than ever and pissed and just. Razed everything to the ground. All the rich and powerful sects who don't give a fuck, and are horrible and abused him and ruined his life. And became Emperor of the Demon Realm.
There isn't much point to this section beyond the fact that I think it kind of highlights that WWX wasn't nearly as much of an outcast as some parts of the fandom like to think and any alienation he faced was through his own making. And to be clear!!! I do think that even if WWX tried to play by the rules and be a good little cultivator, JGS and by extension JGY, would have found SOME way to smear his reputation to get him killed or take the Tiger Seal from him, because they wanted his power. But the point is that he didn't. He was arrogant enough to think he could control resentful energy with no consequences to himself or others, and selfless to the point of isolating himself from anyone who could've helped him. WWX is tragic and compelling to watch bc there were both forces moving against him, and his own flaws made it so, so easy for them to ruin him.
still, I can't think of the OG!Luo Binghe without thinking of Airplane (Shang Qinghua, and i will now be using those names interchangeably), and also just how similar they are in some respects to JGY.
Because OG!Luo Binghe was Airplane's power fantasy, and this world he crafted came from some way he viewed the world, and I think JGY and Airplane are rather similar.
To elaborate a little, Airplane was not abused by his parents, but was rather neglected. His parents weren't happy with each other and didn't pay much attention to him, and once they did divorce and remarried, they were much happier with their new lives and they never said anything to Airplane in specific but he felt very unwelcome. And then he went to university and his dad was supposed to send him money to pay for tuition, rent, food, etc, and eventually his dad just… forgot. and kept forgetting. So Airplane turned to writing a webnovel to make money to survive, but his outline got fried with his laptop but he needs money and he's paid every 100 character so he writes what he knows. Churns out suffering and a dog-eat-dog world and how sweet being powerful and getting revenge would be and pads out the word count with shitty porn. I don't remember if it was in a post or a fic I read, but there's one line someone wrote from Airplane's pov about how he wrote Luo Binghe's suffering so gratuitously so that no one could ever say his revenge wasn't deserved and i literally cannot ever forget that. The thought of Airplane enduring and hurting and any complaints get brushed aside as nothing.
And even when he gets transmigrated into the novel he wrote, he's just cannon fodder, destined to die by another character's hand for being a traitor, in charge of the logistics of the entire sect and doing all the goddamn work and looked down upon for being useless, and he has to follow along with the story bc otherwise he will die, killed by the System.
And I think about how in that meta post, op wrote that JGY fears, he is always always aware just how fragile his position is, how it can be taken away, and I think in a very similar way, Airplane survives. he is in a constant state of survival. He'll do the shitty work, he'll get no respect from anyone, he'll betray his sect, he'll beg and plead and whimper for his life and get seen as a dirty useless coward, and none of that matters as long as he gets to keep living, and I think about that, and just how true to life that feels as a working poor. How we'll go into work and sell hours of our lives away, our health and good mood, pieces of ourselves if we're making art, just for the sake of getting to eat and have access to water and having a roof over our head, and i'm like you know what. of all the characters in MDZS and SVSSS, Airplane is the real working class rep people are looking for.
(This last section turned more into Airplane meta than anything else, but this guy makes me so fucking sad. Fuck man, even JGY has dreams and ambitions!!! Airplane only thinks wistfully of people not sneering down at him all the time and maybe getting a little vacation, from what i recall. how fucked up is that.
also low-key glad svsss isn't popular enough for the dumb parts of fandom to get their hands on airplane bc man! I don't think Airplane is a bad person. I also don't think he's a good person. He's just… selfish. And thinks everyone else is too. Everyone's looking out for themselves in this world, so you can't expect goodness. Easily reflected in the world he crafted for his story bc the characters in his original story were just. not good people. at all.)
anyway. TL;DR wwx knows nothing about how non-cultivators and peasants live, he was a farmer for like two months and spent that time in a cave, inventing things. and i will die on the hill that fans that focus a bit too much on class in MDZS, esp in regards to WWX, are not Understanding the material. Class was NOT the point or the theme of the story MXTX was trying to write, especially not THIS one.
Me: yeah I can't fucking concentrate, nothing interests me

💠💙Light of Stars (and the Destroyer)
By:Sanguis
Summary:
The marriage is supposed to be a punishment, a way to extend Wei Wuxian’s isolation. After all, Wangji has met the man (when they had both been boys, untouched by war); Wei Wuxian could hardly be asked to fit seamlessly into the regimented life of a Lan.
Yu Ziyuan is a formidable, cruel woman, Wangji decides then. She is also wrong if she thinks Wangji will play part in her cruelty.
(And Wei Wuxian, it seems, is so much more than meets the eye).
*
There is a tale of the Light of Stars and the Destroyer.
Chapter:1/1
Words:22,196
Status:completed
At Wangji’s side, Wei Wuxian has run out of patience. Wangji feels it in the shift of his husband’s stance, and squeezes Wei Wuxian’s hand. If the sect leaders are going to be deliberately obtuse, well then Wei Wuxian has never been one to pull his punches. Wangji should know. “You wanted to speak to the Yiling Laozu,” Wei Wuxian says, “so speak.” It takes them by the throat. Wangji looks at a fixed point ahead, but he still sees the statement ripple through the gathered clans, sees a few of them choke. Sees the smarter ones put one and two together to make three, connecting the young cultivator who had razed the fields of Qishan, laying waste to the Wen army, to the young man who had stood defiant in front of Jin Guangshan in his own palace, to the protector of the Wen remnants, to the thing that had settled in the Yiling Burial Mounds. Yiling Laozu. Yiling Laozu wed to Hanguang-Jun. (Wangji shouldn’t smile but he thinks the one to make it to Qi deviation first is Lan Qiren).
~~~
Ah, hostage?” Wei Wuxian says. “I don’t hold anyone hostage, least of all children. The boys can go wherever they please.” This is met with great disbelief, as if they can’t see with their own two eyes that the children aren’t restrained. A-Yuan is starting to feel upset, if the way he clings to Wei Wuxian is any indication, his bottom lip wobbling in a manner he has definitely learnt from A-Yu. The only thing that keeps him from crying is the gentle whispers from Wei Wuxian telling him he is being very good, and that he’ll only have to be good a little longer. “Jin Xuanyu, come to your father,” Jin Guangshan says, smiling like a reptile. Wangji almost laughs at the mere idea of it, that Jin Guangshan has ever been a father. Jin Zixuan looks uncomfortable enough at the idea, throwing a disparaging look at the man who had sired him, as if to say that Jin Guangshan has never been a father to anyone. “A-Yu,” Wei Wuxian says quietly but clearly, “go to your father.” This, too is met with silence. Wangji feels A-Yu shift against his leg as if having decided not to hide anymore, and his eyes widen when the child tugs at his sleeve. A-Yu says, “Baba, up!” It’s purely on reflex that he lifts A-Yu into his arms, the weight familiar. A-Yu, still shy and nervous, buries his face in Wangji’s neck. It’s where he’s most comfortable, and Wangji can’t help but settle a protective hand against A-Yu’s back. The gathered sect leaders and their disciples watch this whole thing, too stunned to even speak or protest. “Well,” Wei Wuxian says cheerfully. It masks his surprise well, but Wangji had seen a flash of it. “That’s clear then. Let it be known that this is not Jin Xuanyu. It cannot be anyway, since I gave birth to this child and no one’s laid a hand on me except for Hanguang-Jun.” Wangji says nothing, not a word. His ears grow hot, but his expression remains completely smooth. He had done more, much more, than simply lay hands on Wei Wuxian, but that is something no one else is privy to.
Maybe because I haven't meet Shen Jiu yet and I'm only in Book 2...
This is just my take but the character closest to Jiang Cheng so far is Luo Binghe... Sure, there are similarities with Liu Qingge as well but its fewer compare to Luo Binghe so far... At least, for me? To make more clear, what I meant is they both undergo similar emotional rollercoaster when the person they trusted suddenly abandoned them.
Betrayal - First of all, their negative feelings toward Wei Wuxian and Shen Qingqiu are valid because they felt/assume they are betrayed. What's wrong is their actions of hurting others because of it. Wei Wuxian left Yunmeng Jiang for Wen Remnants, accidentally killed Jin Zixuan with Wen Ning, and Jiang Yanli's death. From Jiang Cheng's perspective, Wei Wuxian abandoned him and Wei Wuxian didn't respect his aspiration to be sect leader. Shen Qingqiu pushed Luo Binghe to the ravine because System told him so. From his perspective, he's being abandoned by his Shizun simply because he has demon blood which isn't fair because its not his fault that he's a mixed blood.
Conflicted - Their conflict as a character is determining someone important to them if they are good or bad. Jiang Cheng's character arc is him determining if Wei Wuxian's newfound cultivation is bad or not. Does Wei Wuxian really betray him? Does Wei Wuxian doesn't care about his promise back then to him to Jiang Cheng or Jiang Cheng becoming sect leader? Hence, his obsession in hunting demonic cultivators to find answers but later he let go of Wei Wuxian and even returned the flute used by Wei Wuxian for his dangerous cultivation. Implying Wei Wuxian is not bad like what the rumors say and this is his final judgement. Its similar to Luo Binghe's conflict whether Shen Qingqiu is an abuser or actually regret what he did? Is he actually kind and only strict to help him grow stronger?
Temper - Both of them show how scary they are when they lose their temper. Again, this is my only opinion but I don't think that's their whole character. Yes, I joke around Jiang Cheng is an angry grape but his interaction with other than few "specific" people seems fine? He's actually calmer than I expected as sect leader or martial brother. This angry side of him became more prominent after the Yunmeng Jiang massacre, and Wei Wuxian's departure. Before all of this, Jiang Cheng is a good kid in a toxic household who's only trying to please his parents. He don't exactly hate Wei Wuxian yet. Jealous, yes. On the contrary, he values his brother-like connection with Wei Wuxian. Similar to Luo Binghe who's just a good kid through in through who want to meet his Shizun's expectations then after the betrayal of his Shizun, that's only when he lose his cool. He also values the master-disciple relationship with Shen Qingqiu.
The one who Chase - They are the one who keep chasing then want to lock up Wei Wuxian and Shen Qingqiu to probably interrogate them so they ended up using underhanded action to make it happen. Jiang Cheng use Wei Wuxian's fear of dogs against him. Luo Binghe put his demon blood inside Shen Qingqiu so he can find him easily and can hurt him if he didn't obey him.
Miscommunication - This is the result of their assumptions because the people they wish to talk to are refusing to say anything to them. After the death of Wei Wuxian and Shen Qingqiu, they became more unhinged lol Luo Binghe kept Shen Qingqiu's body while Jiang Cheng still believe Wei Wuxian is not dead so he's obsessed in demonic cultivators. Interesting that both Wei Wuxian and Shen Qingqiu's deaths are blamed to Jiang Cheng and Luo Binghe in the story. Wei Wuxian self-detonate during Jiang Cheng's siege and Shen Qingqiu's self-detonate to help Luo Binghe overcame the Xin Mo. Then we have Ning Yingying and Wen Ning explaining to them that the people who died deeply care about them actually. In addition, both of them lead a siege in their respective story.
The difference of course is Shen Qingqiu returned to Luo Binghe while Wei Wuxian didn't returned to Jiang Cheng. Romance-driven Luo Binghe stick closer to Shen Qingqiu but Duty-driven Jiang Cheng let go of Wei Wuxian.
I think I need to be more specific because others assume I'm seeing Book 2 in romantic lens. No. I don't ship BingQiu yet during this part so I'm merely talking about the platonic relationship that's why it reminds me of Yunmeng Shuangjie. An older brother figure and younger brother figure who's abandoned story. Are we clear?
WujiWatch: CQL Rewatch Episode 29
Since this is my favorite episode, I’m making room for three topics in this one!
First, I often focus in these posts on moments when a rewatch shows me I’m remembering something wrong, and this episode has a big one: I am very guilty of thinking that Wei Wuxian, all by his genius self, brought Wen Ning back.
But is that true? This episode has the scene where Wen Ning returns to life/consciousness, following a pretty lengthy (by this show’s standards) battle with Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji. The thing that struck me about it this time is that, after Wei Wuxian has done all the talisman-ing he can do and stands back, Wen Ning still isn’t himself. That only happens after a big final burst of spiritual energy from Lan Wangji—after Lan Wangji has been pouring spiritual music into Wen Ning for quite some time, too. It’s hard not to wonder: could Wei Wuxian have taken that final step, brought Wen Ning back to himself, if Lan Wangji hadn’t helped? Is his ghostly path, on its own, enough to achieve these miraculous results? Or is it the combination of Wei Wuxian’s heretical cultivation and Lan Wangji’s orthodox cultivation that ultimately solves the puzzle?
Second, I know not everyone is on board with the idea of Wangxian as A-Yuan’s parents, even symbolically, and I respect that. But I think it’s a useful exercise to ask, re: the scene in and outside the Yiling Tea House, Why is A-Yuan there? You can easily imagine the scene unfolding basically the same way without him (Wei Wuxian runs into Lan Wangji; they chat over lunch and Wei Wuxian grieves the loss of his dream of his sister’s wedding). So what purpose does A-Yuan’s presence, specifically, serve?
I think it’s hard to escape the conclusion that A-Yuan’s presence is, in fact, intended to set up the idea of Wangxian as A-Yuan’s potential parents—from the onlookers calling Lan Wangji A-Yuan’s dad, to Wei Wuxian’s joke that A-Yuan is his son, to the visual tableau of the two adults eating lunch with A-Yuan sitting on Lan Wangji’s lap. Maybe it’s just my personal blind spot, but I’m having a hard time thinking of any other reason for those beats to exist. This is perhaps extra important to the drama writers because of censorship: giving two characters a shared kid is the perfect plausible-deniability signifier of couple-dom, since there’s nothing expressly romantic about it… but viewers are culturally accustomed to co-parents being romantic partners. That gives the writers a reason to really lean into the “Wangxian Dads” thing, above and beyond what might be in the novel. Whether that’s fair to Wen-popo and the other Wen Remnants is a worthwhile question—but I don’t think it's plausible to say that fans who also lean into the “Wangxian Dads” thing are imposing something on the characters that the writers didn’t intend.
Third and finally, it’s striking how comfortable Wen Qing is bantering with Wei Wuxian in front of Lan Wangji; she basically treats Wei Wuxian the same exact way she always does, even though she’s normally quite reserved in front of outsiders. (It also makes a very striking contrast with the way she treated Jiang Cheng when he visited the Burial Mounds in the previous episode.) It kind of breaks my heart – I watch that scene and can’t help thinking, “This is how it could be, this is what they could have had.” Which I think is the point of a lot of this episode.
Ok hear me out. This is for the people who keep saying that Jiang Cheng can't help the remnants cause he's still rebuilding his sect and is in a politically weak position.
Because I argue if he had actually played his cards right he should have actually been the one with the most to bargain and gain if he helped Wei Ying
Cause yeah, everyone hates the remnants and is terrified of Wei Ying. Imagine if Jiang Cheng had actually used that. If the people saw Wei Ying as some kind of monster on the loose, then make it the JIANG'S monster on a leash instead. When the brothers met at the burial mound, Wei Ying had asked Jiang Cheng for a solution that still safeguards the Remnants. Telling Wei Ying to play along so people think Jiang Cheng has influence on him would be easy. So Jiang Cheng just makes a statement, "Wei Ying said sorry and he's chill but he's keeping the Remnants cause technically yeah, the Jin were mistreating them and the people guarding were simply punished for that mistreatment. Basically, the remnants are under us now"
There WILL be an uproar from almost everyone, but all Jiang Cheng needs to do is play cool, double down and call their bluff. "Yeah, you don't agree? Fine. We're leaving." And no one can do anything cause they're all still licking their wounds from the last war and aren't just gonna start a new one. Even if they wanted to, they know they can't take on Wei Ying, so they won't.
Jiang Cheng is building his clan from the ground up. Doing so whilst making the clan self sustainable would be more than manageable. Plus, we have another secret weapon, and that's Jin Zixuan, who at this point is so in love with YanLi that he would probably go against Jin Guangshan any day now. And we know Yanli isn't gonna go anywhere without her brothers. It's either he defects and brings some of his loyal servants with him to either establish their own sect or join the Jiangs OR Jin Guangshan just relents cause that's his heir.
Coaxing their way back into the Lans good graces is also more than manageable with Lan Xichen. Nie Mingjue can be a brute, but he's not gonna pick a fight where there doesn't need to be one. He just fought a war. He's done. The smaller clans just do whatever the big clans do.
This is what frustrates me the most. If Jiang Cheng had been just a little bit smarter and played the long game he could have had everything. Instead he bent and snapped under the pressure of the other clans and told Wei Ying to just abandon the Wens.
I think mxtx did it on purpose too. I think it was meant to be a character defining moment. Jiang Cheng had the ultimate opportunity to live up to the Jiang Motto and do the impossible.
He didn't. That will always be the biggest tragedy of his character
all of the above are plot elements i've seen be called "plot holes" in various MDZS forums and discussions.
please explain your reasoning in the notes!!!!
explanations / possible fillings for plot holes:
qin su and abortions: one major reason why jin guangyao did not call off his marriage to qin su even after finding out that they were actually half-siblings is that qin su was already pregnant by that point, as the two had had premarital sex. it seems like this problem could be fixed, though, if jin guangyao caused qin su to miscarry somehow (eg. by sneaking abortifacients into her tea).
potential explanations:
abortifacients don't work on cultivators
jin guangyao wanted to respect qin su's bodily autonomy and did not want to cause her pain by causing her to miscarry, but he also could not think of an argument that would convince qin su to willingly get an abortion.
even if the pregnancy disappeared, it was still too late for jin guangyao to call off the marriage.
wen ning agreeing to help with the golden core transfer: at the time of the golden core transfer, wen ning already cares a great deal for wei wuxian - i mean, he betrayed his entire sect by smuggling jiang cheng out of the occupied lotus pier just because wei wuxian, who was nice to him once about his archery, asked him to. meanwhile, wen ning must have known what was actually going on once wei wuxian decided to transfer his golden core to jiang cheng, given that wen ning helped wen qing with the procedure. now, to me, it seems that if you care about someone, you should not allow them to literally give essential parts of themselves away and should instead try to prevent them from acting so self-destructively. to me, it seems that if wen ning really did care about wei wuxian, then he should have stopped wei wuxian from setting himself on fire to keep someone else warm.
possible explanations:
to wen ning, [helping someone do something they're determined to do, even if said thing is self-destructive] is a bigger demonstration of love and care than [imposing your own will over theirs by stopping them from self-destructing].
wei wuxian threatened to kill himself if wen ning and wen qing didn't help him with the golden core transfer.
wen ning legitimately thought that wei wuxian would be fine without his golden core and/or underestimated the negative consequences for wei wuxian, and thus did not perceive this as a self-harming act.
wen ning cared more about getting wei wuxian's approval and keeping wei wuxian happy than he cared about wei wuxian's physical and mental wellbeing.
once wen qing and wei wuxian committed to the golden core transfer, wen ning did not have the courage to speak up against them and/or saw that disagreeing would be useless.
wen ning also wanted to know if his sister's theory would work.
wei wuxian and lying about wen zhuliu getting him: one of the major factors straining jiang cheng and wei wuxian's relationship post-sunshot is that wei wuxian is no longer able to perform many of the second-in-command duties he had promised jiang cheng he would do, but he cannot tell jiang cheng why (ie. because he no longer has a golden core) because he does not want jiang cheng to find out that wei wuxian gave jiang cheng his own golden core. however, it seems like wei wuxian could get around this by telling jiang cheng that wen zhuliu also got wei wuxian later, which is both highly plausible and would explain why wei wuxian doesn't have a golden core anymore without suggesting any sort of transfer.
potential explanations:
wei wuxian didn't want jiang cheng to know at all that he didn't have a golden core anymore.
wei wuxian worried that any hint of "wei wuxian doesn't have a golden core anymore" would eventually lead to jiang cheng figuring out the truth about the golden core transfer.
wei wuxian doesn't want jiang cheng to feel guilty about "stealing" wei wuxian's "chance to meet baoshan sanren and get his core restored."
wei wuxian doesn't want to think about the fact that he no longer has a golden core at all.
wei wuxian didn't think of this. (plausible given wei wuxian's personality)
wen remnants not changing their names and going into hiding: after wei wuxian busts the wen remnants out of the qiongqi pass labor camp, he sets up shop in the yiling burial mounds with himself as their protector; this way, neither the jin nor anyone else can try to harm the wen remnants, because they'd have to go through wei wuxian first. however, what this decision also entails is that all of the wen remnants are now highly associated with wei wuxian; thus, once wei wuxian's reputation goes south enough, all the wen remnants under his protection get dragged down and killed with him. it seems that some of the less high-profile wen remnants (ie. the ones who are not wen ning or wen qing) could have avoided this had they changed their names and gone into hiding, preferably somewhere far away from this part of the jianghu, instead of all sticking together in the highly-visible burial mounds. even if lanling jin and the other sects have a high amount of influence in the local area, there's still an entire world out there; they could have tried fleeing to a different country. even if this option is not possible, at the very least, it should have been discussed and shot down (with an explanation) in the story.
possible explanations:
the burial mounds were under constant surveillance, so there was no chance for the wen remnants to escape without getting caught and killed.
lanling jin's influence is so far-reaching and powerful that there was no way the wen remnants could have fled far enough to go into hiding without getting caught first.
the wen remnants wanted to keep their family name and stick together with their family members.
the option was discussed and dismissed as implausible entirely offscreen.
jiang cheng not hunting down xue yang: the story's narration states that jiang cheng is widely believed to have consistently hunted down, tortured, and killed countless demonic cultivators, specifically because he believes they could be wei wuxian resurrected. meanwhile, xue yang is fairly well known due to his incredibly public massacre of the chang sect and then baixue temple and subsequent employment by lanling jin. furthermore, after xue yang was removed from jinlintai, xue yang set up shop in yi city, where he very openly killed a bunch of people and turned them into fierce corpses; in fact, one could consider the ghost-town status of yi city at the story's start to be due in no small part to xue yang's actions. however, despite xue yang being a very well-known demonic cultivator who has continued to openly demonically-cultivate, nothing in the text suggests that jiang cheng ever tried to hunt down xue yang. this seems to present a contradiction with the rumors about jiang cheng hunting down demonic cultivators.
possible explanations:
jiang cheng already knows that xue yang was not wei wuxian, so he doesn't care about xue yang.
jiang cheng fully believes that jin guangyao successfully killed xue yang upon becoming sect leader jin, and yi city is remote enough that no mention of xue yang's activities has ever reached jiang cheng.
jiang cheng got his ass kicked by xue yang entirely offscreen and it just never came up in the story.
the rumors about jiang cheng hunting down and killing demonic cultivators are not entirely correct.
lan wangji freely ditching lan xichen at the end of the story: the story ends with lan xichen basically getting put into the blender. first he finds out that his bestie jin guangyao actually orchestrated the death of nie mingjue and super lied about it, and then he's tricked by nie huaisang into stabbing jin guangyao. he's not doing too great. yet, at the end of the guanyin temple scene, instead of checking on his brother or even offering a single "are you okay?", lan wangji immediately fucks off into the sunset with wei wuxian. given that lan xichen was relatively supportive of lan wangji during lan wangji's 13 years of mourning, to many on this website, this reads as a failure of familial duties that lan wangji goes entirely uncriticized for by the narrative.
possible explanations:
it was an intentional writing decision and not a plot hole. MXTX thinks that, because lan xichen failed to see through jin guangyao's lies, lan xichen therefore deserves to suffer, so lan wangji is morally justified in ding dong ditching him.
lan wangji did screw up here, but it's an internally-consistent writing decision, not a plot hole. lan wangji is meant to read as a younger brother character who is more used to being taken care of than taking care of others.
no lube: at the end of the story, wei wuxian and lan wangji fuck nasty in some bushes. without any lube. the lack of some sort of lubricant, at least, doesn't seem to cause any problems with the anal sex itself.
possible explanations:
cultivator's asses are self-lubricating, or at the very least repair damage at an incredibly high speed.
the sex actually is quite painful, but wei wuxian was a virgin up until now so he just thinks this is normal.
the sex actually is quite painful, but wei wuxian is into it.
there was lube op just forgot (plausible because i only skimmed that section)
almost every sect leader unmarried: in this sort of setting, where blood and not ability determines inheritance, it seems like producing heirs and thus securing the future of the sect/clan should be of the highest importance. however, nie mingjue, lan xichen, jiang cheng, and later nie huaisang are all unmarried, and don't seem to have any heirs either. this goes doubly for the nie sect, who know themselves that they live shorter lives due to their cultivation style.
potential explanations:
cultivators live a really long time so it's not as pressing an issue.
there are wives and heirs, they are just offscreen.
gonna be real boss i got nothing else
JC better be fucking glad that the whole "i was given a boon from BSSR b/c of my mom" thing was just a lie made up for the Golden Core transfer. that could have been the last fucking thing WWX has from his mother and he just has zero qualms about taking it. both he and his mother truly believe WWX owes them all that he has, including his life, his gratitude, and the memories of the parents he barely remembers.
JC screams "you're the reason my parents and sister are gone!". yeah? well your mom has been actively taking away and destroying the memory of WWX's parents and you just proved that you'd also do the same if given the opportunity.
an actual brother (blood or not) would show concern about what WWX was offering to sacrifice. JC did not, not even years later.
Jiang Cheng lives his life by what he believes others owe him, not what he actually owes others. Even when he knows he owes someone else, he will not repay it if he sees the debt as a "hardship."
Wei WuXian finally lost his temper, “Jiang Cheng! What- What do you think you’re talking about?! Take it back—don’t make me give you a thrashing! Don’t forget. Who was the one that helped us burn Uncle Jiang’s and Madam Yu’s corpses? Who returned to us the ashes that are in Lotus Pier right now? And who took us in when we were chased after by Wen Chao?!” Jiang Cheng, “I’m the one who fucking wants to give you a thrashing! Yes, they helped us before, but why in the world don’t you understand that right now any remnant of the Wen Sect is a target of criticism! No matter who they are, with a surname of Wen they have committed a most heinous crime! And those who protect the Wen are at risk of being condemned by everyone! All the people loathe the Wen-dogs so badly that the worse they die the better. Whoever protects them is against the entire world. Nobody would speak for them, and nobody would speak for you either!”
—Chapt. 73: Recklessness, exr
[Jiang Cheng] could manage to tolerate others, but definitely not Wen Ning, the Wen-dog who put his hand through Jin ZiXuan’s heart and ended both his sister’s happiness and her life. Just a look, and he felt the urge to kill him right there. How dare he step foot on the earth of Lotus Pier—he really was looking for his death!
—Chapt. 89: Loyalty, exr
With a shove, Jiang Cheng pushed aside the panicking Jin Ling who was supporting his side. Though he was already losing blood, blood still rushed to his head in his anger, making his face cycle through shades of white and red. He spat, “What gives you the right? Wei WuXian, what gives you the fucking right?” From behind Lan WangJI, Wei WuXian said stiffly, “What right?” Jiang Cheng replied, “How much has my family given for you? I’m his son. I’m the heir of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect. But all those years, I was never enough next to you. Their love, their dedication, even their life! The lives of my father, mother, older sister, and even Jin ZiXuan! Because of you, all that’s left now is an orphaned Jin Ling!” ... “And then look what happened? You went to shelter some outsider, haha! From the Wen Sect, of all people. How many years did you eat their food and drink their water?! You betrayed us in an instant without any hesitation! What do you think my family is to you?! Endless good deeds, you’ve done them all, whilst every fuck-up was always because you had no choice! You ‘had no choice’! What difficulties can’t you explain?! What hardship must you hide?! Hardship?! You don’t tell me anything, you treat me like a moron!!! “How much do you owe my family? Shouldn’t I hate you?! Couldn’t I hate you?! What gives you the right to suddenly make me feel like I should be the one that’s sorry?! What gives you the right to make me feel like some fucking clown after all these years?! What the hell am I?! Do I only deserve to be blinded by your glory, by your light?! Shouldn’t I hate you?!”
—Chapt. 103: A Hatred for a Life Part 6, boat-full-of-lotus-pods
Jiang Cheng, on the other hand, looked about ready to lose his mind on the spot. He said, “You? You?!” The force of the punch had been too powerful. Not only did it go right through Wen Ning’s chest, the shock of it also shattered part of his vocal chords. Unable to form a single word, he fell towards the ground. ... Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi went to the corner. Wen Ning was still half-collapsed onto Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling in an awkward position. Wei WuXian laid him flat on the ground. After studying the dark hole on his chest, he fretted, “Look at you......What should I use to fill this now?” Wen Ning asked, “Young Master, is it serious......?” Wei WuXian said, “It’s not serious. You don’t need the organs here anyways. But it looks bad.” Wen Ning replied, “It’s not like I asked to look good......” Jiang Cheng was silent.
1. Hi there! I'm looking for this fic that I thought I'd bookmarked, but I tragically had not. The premise is Wei Wuxian is asked to watch a class of baby Lan junior disciples when the teacher is pulled away, much to Lan Qiren's dismay. He's left watching them for much longer than Lan Qiren intended and ends up really helping the students, particularly one little kid who hadn't been able to develop his core very well yet. They go outside to test throwing snowballs with wind talismans and the kids all leave with more confidence in themselves. Lan Qiren is able to be convinced to let Wei Wuxian keep helping out with the baby juniors. @lucky-cat-13
2. Hey, I am searching for two fanfics.
(A) One in which I think wangxian are broken up or could be that LWJ died cause all I remember is that WWX obsessively draws LWJ's ears cause he couldn't remember how they looked and that it ended on a happy note also I think it was a modern verse but not quite sure .
(B) And in the second one all I know is that wangxian are strangers who bury a body together and that one of them probably LWJ was the one who helped WWX do so and that they were in a forest and it was night time and was a oneshot I think under 20k words.
Thankyou!
2A)
FOUND! you'll always know me (ana_cp) by anaphoricae (E, 127k, wangxian, modern, Actor WWX, Teacher LWJ, Getting Back Together, Exes to Lovers, is it exes to lovers if you never quite defined your relationship?, Angst with a Happy Ending, LWJ being cute with children alert, WWX rides a motorcycle, LWJ writes as a hobby, Back hugs as a love language, Sharing Food as a Love Language) Another one where WWX isn't exactly an idol (he's a famous actor) and LWJ knows him from before he was famous, so maybe not exactly what they're looking for, but a great story nonetheless.
2B)
3. Hi! Thank you for the work you do. Could you please help me find this fic? It's set during the 14 years wwx is dead, focusing on lwj and his sect-- it has some great OCs with lwjs younger cousins who adore him, and specifically question the rules because of his punishment. Lwj also gets migranes? I think it's in progress, but not sure. Thank you!
4. Looking for fanfic where Lan Zhan is grieving and the rest of the Lan Clan regret whipping him and are trying to help him survive. I read it a few weeks ago go but forgot to bookmark it.
LAN xichen also bring in Yuan to visit lan zhan as he is healing to motivate him to heal quicker.
But any recommendations about angsty lan zhan * Wei ying in general is appreciated. @wildcat12
5. Hello, I have a request.
Wei Ying survived the first siege of burial mounds but his soul was shattered and he was the kind of child who needs to be watched and lan wangji takes him to the cloud recesses to care for him and at some point wei ying keeps trying to hurt himself or die and as for lan wangji he keeps on taking care for him for 13 years until wei ying successfully killed himself and got summon in mo xuanyu body. @lanwuxian0725
6. I am back again, please, you are wonderful, i need help finding another fic. (One day i will start logging the titles of fics I love.) I know the plot, but all my keyword/tag searches have been unsuccessful. So, For a Fic Finder: It's a modern (no magic) fic set just as we went into full pandemic lock down. (It may have been set in Canada - but I'm not positive on that detail.) Wei Ying is an artist--a painter, and he lives with Lan Zhan, who (i think) teaches music. They are friends but not yet a couple at the fic's start. A big plot point is Wei Ying has a setious unspecified auto-immune disease (i recall one symptom was painfully swollen joints) that is debilitating when it flares up. It also means he has to stay strictly home due to his immune system being compromised. Let's see...Lan Zhan has bunnies and as he gets really depressed during lock down, he uses his hefty trust fund to shop online for increasingly ridiculous/expensive stuff (think stuff like jeweled bunny water bowls from Tiffany and Cartier). Eventually, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan confess & get together. The only thing after that, that is sad, is how much they both miss LZ's son, A-Yuan. A-Yuan & Jingyi are at university and initially stay with Jiang Yanli when campus shuts down. Wei Ying thinks that they won't be able to come home for break as planned, because they don't want to risk Wri Ying getting covid. But the ending of the fic is both boys secretly super quarantine themselves and then borrow a car and drive the long road home. A-Yuan was adopted by Lan Zhan and at the very end he calls Wei Ying "Dad," which is a huge deal to Wei Ying.
If someone can find this. I will be so grateful! @emrinalex
FOUND! A Bad of Nibs (Nibs are Bad) by Enk (M, 17k, WangXian, Quarantine, Slice of Life, Friends to Lovers, Chronic Illness, Chronic Pain, Fluff and Angst, Mild Sexual Content, Found Family, Vague Canadian Location, JYL Lives)
7. Fic finder please! I mostly remember WWX as the final girl trope and it was listed in the tags. It was kind of a horror and mystery story where his mother was killed by serial killer? And JGY was helping them? There were shoes involved. And nhs and WWX get caught and have to fight xy and escape. then LWJ has some kind of ghost gift and comes to find them. It was so good and I can’t remember the title to find it to read again! 😭😭😭
FOUND! Post Mortem by Cataclysmic_Calamity (E, 178k, WangXian, Psychological Horror, Modern, friends with benefits, they’re both fucked up but they love each other so much, Slow Burn Mystery, Unnegotiated Kink, Dom/sub, Anal Sex, Consensual Non-Consent, Stalking, Drug Addiction, Serial Killers, in WWX’s desire to critique the ‘final girl’ trope he accidentally becomes one, Angst with a Happy Ending, meta commentary on the horror and true crime genres)
8. Hi I was wondering if you all could help me find a fic? It was a modern au where WWX was a spy and had to break up with LWJ but he ends up getting injured and breaks into LWJ’s place to bleed out on his couch after not seeing him for years. I know LWJ was a surgeon or at least a doctor in the fic and that Lan Yuan shows up as a kid LWJ meets at the hospital. Wen Qing and Lan Xichen are also in it from what I recall. Thank you for all that you guys do! @peerlessplantma
FOUND? 8 sounds like a deleted fic by scarletmoontears called empty space beside me? Currently unfinished at about 26K words
I could've sworn i was subscribed to updates but it's not in my subscriptions, I think this is a WIP?
9. Hi! I have yet another fic that I can't remember the name of. It was on AO3
What I remember: Wangxian were immortals who are living in the modern age (Modern AU). Wei Ying lives as a famous actor, Jiang Ying, where his fans regularly know that he is a troll --- Wei Ying tends to tweet. There was this whole thing where a fan brought up how Wei Ying looks like this old legend story Wei WuXian and Wei Ying actually responds to the comment online and confirms it to be true. No one takes it seriously bc well they know Wei Ying is a prankster. (This ofc, is the time that Wei Ying is NOT lying)
TLDR: wangxian immortals, modern AU, on AO3, Wei Ying is a famous actor under name Jiang Ying
THANKS! Much love! @chenqingmagic
NOT FOUND! ridiculous future bullshit Series by sami (T, 93k, WangXian, XiChengQing, Future Fic, in theory it follows on from an au, specifically The Same Moon Shines Series, in actuality I’m not committing to this that hard, Humour, immortals through history, Modern AU, Sort Of, University, outsider pov, Pride, Chaos Gremlin WWX)
10. hey!
first up, thank you so much for doing— personally, it bugs so much when i can't find the fics i love! there's a modern-setting fic, where wwx is a cultivation shop owner hiding from the jins, on the low— and a birthday night gets stuck in a time loop, and same happens to lwj. could you plsss help me find this??? i've been trying since a couple of days now, but.. 😅
11. Hello! Love this blog for all the fics its given me <3! I'm looking for a fic where Wei Wuxian is left behind during the fall of Lotus Pier,, Jiang Cheng still escapes with his mom, but that's all I can remember. Any help I can get will be appreciated!!
11 seems familiar to me although I can't remember whether madam yu also escaped with jc or not. It was probably a wwx birthday project WIP which I'm sure was in my bookmarks. But I can't find it now, I can see a mystery work when searching with specific tags which could be it but again I'm not sure
FOUND? Every time you fall by Nillegible (T, 9k, JFM/YZY, WangXian, JC & WWX, WIP, Fix-It, Canon Divergence, Fall of Lotus PIer)
12. Hi!! I'm looking for a college au fic where lan wangji is selectively mute and comunicates though sign language and meets wwx ( jc and jyl) who know sign language because madame yu is deaf. Wangxian meet at a coffee shop whe wwx works! Thank for all the great work you do! @kavlobebeki
13. Hi! There was this fic that I was reading a while ago but lost… do you think you could find it? I believe it was a teen wangxian fic, cloud recesses arc. Wwx is teasing Lwj in the library pavilion like usual, but pretty much freezes because it’s storming outside. It was then revealed that wwx’s fear of storms came from his fear of lightning, which of course stems from his trauma related to madam Yu.
FOUND? 14. Hello! There was a fic a while back. Wei Ying and the wen Remnants were in Gusu. But while Lan Zhan was away the elders put Wei Ying on trial, silenced him and whipped him? His siblings show up right at the end and he's barely hanging on. I don't think it was ever finished, but it was good and I have a craving to read it again.Thank you! @loremipsumflotsamandjetsam
i think i have seen it, possibly a thread fic on twt? Maybe with WY being a prisoner in the Lan sect and A-Yuan stays with him, LZ does not know him and hates him but then gets to know and understand him better? And then he leaves CR for some time and JGY of SS possibly do something to make WY seem guilth and whipped so when LZ returns he is livid and proclaims marriage? But sadly i don't remember who's fic that was :( Though i don't remember WY's sibs being there, so maybe that's another one. Also in the one i read WY wakes up after the whipping and finds out LQR and LZ cared for A-Yuan during blackout… It was an interesting one anyway
15. Hi, for the next ficfinder: there was this fic that said in what I think were the author notes that wwx thought he was lazy but turns out he's just depressed and I can't find it ☹️
16. Hello 🐇💙 Looking for one of the many canon divergence fics where the Wens and WWX end up at Lotus Pier instead of, you know, dead. The one specific identifying detail I can provide is WWX being in chronic pain from the core removal and WQ trying to figure out a way to help him. At least one instance of WWX trying to hide/downplay the pain and basically collapsing before he accepts the help. @linderel
17. Hi! I’m looking for a fic where Wei wuxian comes back as mo xuanyu and goes to pier. He pretends to be a woman and goes to gusu with Jiang Cheng, Lan wangji meets Wei wuxian pretending to be a woman and starts to fall in love. Lan xichen notices and talks to him because everyone thinks Wei wuxian and jiang cheng are dating and he doesn’t want his brother’s heart to break again. There was also a big meeting between sects where someone asks how many kids Wei wuxian and jiang cheng want to have, Wei wuxian answers but Jiang cheng says he wants none and everyone’s shocked before Jiang cheng reveals that Wei wuxian is his heir and not his lover.when everyone goes to yiling city Wei wuxian is forced to use some demonic cultivation but isn’t caught and all the juniors love him for being his cool and mischievous self. I’d be so grateful for any help in finding this fic! @sentient-halloween-candy
18. Re-submitting this in the hopes that someone might know this since it wasn't found last time 😞
About the fic:
It's been a long time since I read this one, so it's an older fic (at least more than 3-4 years ago). It was centred around MDZS as a story with Jiang Wanyin as the MC and YLZ as the villain. Our main characters had a whole fandom around it, where LWJ is a famous author and WWX a not-very-popular artist who drew fanart of the most hated character in the book "Yiling Laozu" (I think he was an artist, could also be a fellow writer).
I remember there was lot of fandom discourse about WWX and his choice of character to support and how YLZ was always jealous of JWY and did actually maliciously cause everything he was accused of in this alternate MDZS canon. Then, suddenly, LWJ + WWX end up pairing up for a fandom event (a big bang or smth similar), and WWX has the idea of a story where canon divergence occurs and YLZ is a good person instead (like actual canon) and LWJ agrees to write for it.
This was as far as I had read for it. From I remember it was a WIP. Thanks <3 @indelibleme
19. hi I wanted to ask for this fic
people throw around the word arrogant a lot when talking about wei wuxian post war which i think is funny because it implies that wwx had an exaggerated sense of self, like he thought himself better than his peers and the rest of the cultivation world. similar to how su she thinks lan wangji is arrogant. but like… most of wwxs arrogance from that time was a performance so no one could question why couldn’t do anything a typical spiritual cultivator could do, which was be even more noticeable for someone who had been as powerful as wwx. ALSO wwx really was that powerful, he wasn’t exaggerating his own talents or abilities, he could back them up (ie phoenix mountain and the blindfolded archery) wwx is incredibly confident in himself and knows exactly what he’s capable of.
i see people using the scene where wwx interrupts othe jin sect banquet while looking for the wen remnants as an example of his “arrogance” a lot when… that’s a poor way of reading this scene.
wwx first asks jin zixun to talk alone and when he makes it very clear he’s not even gonna humour wwx, wwx starts to get angry. jin guangshan adds fuel to the fire when he realised that jzx is making a fool out of himself and wwx is perfectly respectable when talking to him, even letting him know that he owes those wens a life debt, hence why he wants to help them. jgs continues to insist that wwx join the banquet and put aside the matter. when wwx declines and once again asks for him to resolve the issue jgs instead tries to blackmail wwx into giving up by mentioning the yin tiger tally and wwx finally runs out of patience.
and even after All of that wwx doesn’t truly snap until he points out the hypocrisy of the cultivation sects because they have allowed renegade clans from qishan who surrendered during the war to attend the banquet they’re all at while also preaching that anyone with the surname wen is guilty. it’s only then that he begins to threaten them and it’s clear he only does it bc he realises that debating will get him no where, that they’re shameless in their preconceived ideas of righteousness and wwx can’t afford to waste time fighting with them on logistics.
i just think labelling this scene as “wwx being an arrogant asshole who thinks he can do whatever he wants” is literally the Opposite of how you’re supposed to read it. like mdzs is a critique on mob mentality and people really think siding with the Mob during scenes like this is the correct interpretation
I've always found the umbrella scene in the rain in CQL a little hard to swallow. Both WWX and LWJ have seen the Wen remnants abused over and over again. WWX has now discovered a whole camp of them not only being abused but murdered, and the murder includes a friend of his who helped him during the war. WWX decides to do something about these atrocities and save a bunch of women and children and elderly people, and . . . LWJ protests? Does he even know what's going on? Why does he want to stop WWX from doing the right thing?
My interpretation of this scene has always been that while LWJ is aware of the abuses they have witnesses together, he was not aware of what specifically happened at the camp and with Wen Ning. However, he is aware that WWX is turning his back on the cultivation world, and he believes that there is another way to handle this without WWX suddenly becoming enemy number one. My interpretation is that LWJ thinks that surely this can be handled through negotiation--or, if resolution with the Jin Sect can't be reached, then an agreement can be made between the other sects that will force the Jin Sect to handle this a different way.
Still, it really does look like he's there to protest protecting the innocent, so it isn't a scene that I love. As I've stated elsewhere, I have no idea what we're supposed to think about fucking Lan Xichen sitting around while the Wen prisoners are so sorely abused, other than that the show can only have one hero, which seems silly to me when WWX does such bad things.
My understanding was that LWJ was not there when WWX absconded with the Wen remnants in the book, so I was eager to read the book's explanation. As I've stated elsewhere, the handling of the Wens' abuse is much, much easier to understand in the book, because no one is really seeing it. The Jin Sect knows it's happening, but my impression of the book is that even Jin Zixuan would object to the abuses of the prisoners, much less Lan Xichen. It's easy to believe that Jin Zixuan and even Lan Xichen think that WWX just went crazy and really took the Wens to start his own sect or create an army. It's possible to understand that JC doesn't understand why WWX would bother (though I gotta say that the aid WN and WQ render to both WWX and JC in the book feels even more risky and monumental, so while it's understandable that JC wasn't super aware of their help at the time, it definitely comes across as pretty awful that JC can't look past their names).
But I'm actually even more confused about LWJ in the book than I am in the show. In the show, you really feel like "okay, so LWJ just disagrees and is unwilling to walk the narrow bridge," fine. But in the book--like, what is his opinion on what WWX did? After the NIghtless City massacre, LWJ says he doesn't know if WWX is right or wrong, but he's willing to suffer the punishment for WWX's crimes with WWX. And you could apply that to this situation and say that LWJ doesn't know whether it's right or wrong that WWX absconded with the Wens--but the other half of the statement, that he's willing to accept WWX's punishment with him, seems he really should had just gone to the Burial Mounds when WWX took the Wens there and helped him the whole time. Is it that LWJ doesn't know whether absconding with the Wens is right or wrong, but that he'd not yet willing to suffer punishment with WWX for his crimes?
Does he think WWX doesn't need him? I can see LWJ convincing himself that WWX is powerful and doesn't need help. I can also see LWJ telling himself that WWX has rejected him time and time again and so would not want him at the Burial Mounds. But idk, LWJ goes to Yiling and WWX doesn't reject him at all. Plus, LWJ sees what's happening there, that there are just a bunch of people farming and trying to make a living. If he is so upright and just, why wouldn't he help? And if he doesn't know whether helping would be upright and just, isn't he in love? Why wouldn't he help?
I think the only argument that can be made is that LWJ hasn't accepted his own love and doesn't until WWX goes mad at Nightless City. But I think it's still weird that this character who is supposed to be so good and noble doesn't see that helping the Wens is right, and if he does see it, doesn't stand with WWX against the world.
See, what works for me in CQL is that LWJ actively regrets the past. He clearly states that he thinks he wronged WWX. And that makes a lot more sense to me than MDZS!LWJ, who ...well, never says much. So, now I'll tell you my interpretation of the book--my Doylian interpretation, since I can't make a Watsonian one make much sense.
My interpretation of the book is that MXTX wants LWJ to be noble and good and just, but it's actually hard to make anyone turning their backs on WWX at the Burial Mound look good, which is why we never get even a whiff of what JYL and LWJ think about the Wen remnants or WWX's little settlement near Yiling. Because MXTX wants WWX to be noble and good and just but also rejected by the world. Imo, the case with JC is made much more strongly; JC sees what's going on at the Burial Mounds and gets that WWX is being a hero, but is frustrated by it because JC has his own things going on and is drowning and needs help. Meanwhile all JYL has going on is a wedding and all LWJ has going on is...WWX, so you really can't say much about what they think about everything or the plot kinda falls apart.
It's very frustrating and has made me come to love the umbrella scene a lot more.
