He could never have been a villain, never anything but the greatest hero, leader, man on the show…
no matter how you word it
Tumblr media
Now I don’t usually post much on Rick Grimes alone, cos Queen Michonne takes up all of my heart. This is Danai & Michonne (and Richonne) stan Space FIRST💅…
BUT I stan Richonne and can stan them DOWN because one half of Richonne is WORTHY of Michonne.
Second to Michonne, Rick is my favourite character. Why am I lying it’s their unborn baby(s) conceived during TOWL ep 4😜
Rick was the ‘officer friendly’ the ‘by the book’ family man, didn’t lose his temper with his wife to the point that THAT annoyed her, loved his son inside out and sideways. Did his job with everything and took a bvllet for it.
Tumblr media
In the new world, though many bumps along the way, people he butted heads with, power plays, differences had with words and fists. Ultimately this man took charge and led people, protected people, sometimes from themselves and NOT by preying on the week, selling them out or culling them. NOT by lying and backstabbing, siding with the bigger bad, imposing a tax and enforcing a rule by fear, follow my rules or die by my hand, violence against any and all.
Tumblr media
remember how and why Dwight’s face ended up that way 😑 why the women are dressed and distressed, why the doctor was there and what happened next? Why we even sweated The Saviors for too damn long?! The plain difference between what someone chooses to do and what they do when they have no choice or what they chose to do because they feel it must be done.
No, RICK GRIMES stuck his neck out for people he knew for days, weeks or months. He would do for someone he met a week ago the same as someone he’d known for years.
Tumblr media
Pillow talk after risking their necks to helps several communities survive including people that tried to take their lives and their community
He protected and loved a child as his own, protected and loved the wife that created said child with his BEST FRIEND & PARTNER. Some wouldn’t, many wouldn’t.
Tumblr media
Along the way he turned strangers to family, protected himself and others with everything he had in him. Used his bare hands and mouth to the end lives of those trying to end his and his loved ones.
Tumblr media
Never once gave up on his children, after every antagonist that he encountered he they took a little more from him, broke him a little more, the last even took him from his family for YEARS, left him physically disabled trying to be with his family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rick Grimes may have blood on his hands, HIS INCLUDED, but it has always been to protect or defend his family, protect or defend those that couldn’t. He started out as a Sheriff’s Deputy and ended up a Survivor. The only person that he ever can be compared to as the other side of the same coin is the other half of his heart, Michonne.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No other character man or woman, dead or alive, on the show or a spin off, a protagonist or antagonist can rightly and justifiably claim that.
Tumblr media
different leaders then RICK flaws and all
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s impossible to make Rick Grimes into a villain, to liken him to one, because at his core Rick Grimes is just a loving father, a loving husband, partner and friend, a protector and a survivor. NOT at the cost of others but for the benefit of others. He puts others first each and every time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s why his character is THE main character. Why he is one of the most loved characters active or not and why his & Michonne’s continued story is THE MOST SUCCESSFUL ❤️‍🔥

annabeth: percy you take anything left, i’ll take anything right
percy: oka- wait, are you wearing my jacket?
annabeth, stabbing a gorgon: …maybe
percy, slicing a serpent in half: i’ve been looking for that!
annabeth, rolling and knocking empousi off their feet and stabbing them: it’s big and warm and smells like you. i was cold and needed something to wear. so this is what i grabbed.
percy, chuckling as he strangles an ogre: i’m okay with that
annabeth, stabbing basilisks: good, because i’m keeping it
percy, smashing two cyclops faces into the floor: it looks better on you anyway
annabeth, decapitates a chimera: *winks at him*
percy, casually lighting a hydra on fire and giving her a crooked smile: you know, i was thinking for tonight-
leo, across the room covered in monster blood and fighting for his life: GUYS PLEASE-

I was reading a post about CoTG and I realized: Rick has seemingly started to write every character pairing with the exact same dynamic, and he's not good at writing that dynamic and it doesn't make sense for 90% of the characters he writes it for.
It's that very specific dynamic of one half of the pair who is almost aggressive to the other party - "teasing" them constantly/insulting them, affectionately punching/judo flipping/maiming/etc, seemingly almost always exasperated with the other - and said other party usually just accepts this treatment or blanketly views it fondly, and may generally be framed as more incompetent than their partner and a little bit of a doormat (particularly relating to being insulted/teased/etc by their partner).
We start seeing this dynamic in HoO with Percy and Annabeth, as a sort of semi-inconsistent twist on their rivals-to-friends-to-lovers dynamic from the first series. Then the dynamic pattern develops further with Leo and Calypso. Then Magnus and Alex. Then Nico and Will, particularly in TSATS. And now in CoTG, it's Percy and Annabeth again but even more in this direction.
I know people have talked about Nico and Will's relationship over the series rapidly being shoehorned into Percabeth Two™, and it's extremely apparent in TSATS that Rick's doing it on purpose (including directly quoting Percabeth scenes but minorly tweaking them to be Solangelo). But recognizing it as an overarching trend in Rick's later books honestly reminds me a lot of how Rick started trying to apply the "Percy Formula" so-to-speak to nearly every protagonist in HoO (and then try to replicate similar character archetypes with Magnus and Apollo's narrations - moreso Magnus in being jaded and sarcastic, very much trying to be first series Percy. He only sounds unique because Rick failed at making him Percy 2. Apollo is more akin to later-series Percy characterization of being goofy and incompetent. Apollo [and Zeus] even got retconned to give Apollo a more similar backstory to Percy's). Rick seems to have decided that he thinks the audience wants this specific dynamic but 10 times over, except he's not good at writing it the first time because it's a bastardization of the time he did a different thing okay.
And Rick also seems aware of that too! Because he retconned Calypso and Leo at the end of TOA, probably because he realized how absolutely awful it was reading when they were written with that dynamic of Calypso just functionally hating Leo and constantly being aggressive towards him! The only time Rick's actually made the dynamic even semi-successful was with Magnus and Alex, because it actually fits within their characters, their dynamics with each other, and their environment. Alex beheading Magnus on the regular works out fine because there are no repercussions to that in Valhalla, Magnus will be fine, so it does genuinely come off as humorous. And Alex has been effectively established to be abrasive at times but have her genuine feelings shine through regularly, and that meshes well with Magnus' jaded-and-aloof-but-quietly-very-empathetic character. And Magnus has been established to, yes, not be great at combat, particularly compared to Alex. They are the only time that flavor of dynamic in that form was effective and cohesive.
Percabeth is no longer rivals-to-friends-to-lovers badasses on equal levels with shaky pasts who finally found some form of permanence with one another. Now it's super smart doting and affectionately aggressive girlfriend and her silly goofy 50%-of-the-time incompetent boyfriend who she judo flips/pushes off cliffs/etc - but affectionately~! Solangelo is trying to riff off of the early series "Poseidon & Athena are enemies" dynamic that Percabeth had but with Apollo & Hades being "opposites" but learning to accept each other, except it ends up with Will just coming off as a huge asshole and Nico being retconned to a complete doormat about it - when prior to that those characterizations would be completely contrary to their established characters (even just from TOA!). Calypso in HoO gets retconned from her PJO characterization to being snooty and aggressive, and Leo's false persona gets merged into his just normal personality except he just also becomes a doormat but more goofy than Nico with occasional haha-dark/depression-humor! Which Nico also got. Which was also a bastardized Percy trait that got redistributed.
It's exhausting. Rick write more than one relationship dynamic you can do it I promise

#the first time he did it in unmortricken i was like Fuck Yes and little did i know he would just keep doing it the whole time#DESPERATELY hoping they keep both of these things. i Love when characters have tiny little habits sprinkled in their actions#to me these things kinda sorta symbolise him no longer being afraid to really be himself#like he no longer has to hide certain things about himself that inside of the cfc wouldve made him appear ‘suspicious’#since he IS like so much different than any other morty ever#also barely related but like. em is fundamentally such a good character bc everytime we see him he’s feeling something different#in his first appearance he was cold and distant because at the time he was new to being free and was strictly focused on his goal and wasn’#even sure if it would work#in his second appearance he seemed hopeful and honest both of these things just being a trap to get the people of the citadel to trust him#and his old colder self unfurling near the end after he successfully becomes president#in his third appearance he seems giddy almost. he’s constantly giggling before and after sentences and he’s super eager to just Get The Hel#Out. and also to reveal the truth to morty prime. make it so that he doesn’t have to be the one to shoulder everything anymore.#and this fourth appearance. apart from a few little details he really just seems happy and comfortable. the entire episode he was just doin#whatever he wanted and nobody got in his way at all. and i could not be happier#normal about this character!#rick and morty#evil morty#rick and morty spoilers#odiespeak

the thing is, we were never meant to sympathize with luke when he betrays percy. we aren’t meant to see his inner turmoil. we aren’t meant to see hesitancy, or regret. it’s meant to be a slap in the face. luke takes percy to the woods knowing full well what he’s about to do. in tlt kronos orders him to kill percy because he’s too volatile; kronos said so himself when percy hijacked luke’s dreams and began to figure out there were bigger things at play. the thing is, when kronos orders luke to kill percy, he doesn’t hesitate. that’s the point!!! it is essential that luke is so blinded by rage and vengeance for the gods that he will stop at nothing to get what he wants (the god’s destruction). percy accuses luke that kronos is using him, but he just retaliates that the gods do the same, and they do!!! but see, the thing is, luke’s whole point is that he’s so focused on the god’s injustices that he forgets what’s important. he goes for the “greater good” but he destroys his family, his life, in the process. by attempting to dismantle a system, he turns to another system that follows the same oppressive logic. THAT is why luke fails. THAT is why it’s so important he be blinded by rage, because it’s his inevitable, tragic end. he’s doomed by the narrative from the start. yes, we’re meant to be surprised by his betrayal because of how cold and calculating it is, but also it’s important to set the grounds for luke’s character to be this angry, vengeful boy because later on we come to understand why it is that he made those choices. we see annabeth’s side of things and percy’s side. we see luke’s side. we see many sides. we see a man who is too far gone yet comes to understand, in the end, that he’s been doing more harm than good to those he was supposed to protect (annabeth is the most obvious example). we get a complex character who won’t hesitate to kill but who also won’t hesitate to sacrifice himself so that he can save the family he has left.
the thing is, luke was supposed to be angrier in the show. percy was supposed to be angrier in the show. they’re both foils. luke is what percy could become, if percy lets his anger win. so, to change—even if it’s only slightly altering—their characters, is to change the point of the story. because luke tries to kill percy in his betrayal and later percy tries to kill luke but then percy starts to understand luke…until luke is gone and kronos is gone yet the gods don’t change but percy does. and percy’s initial anger is supposed to transform and he’s supposed to see what luke saw and the cycle continues. the thing is, it’s not even one of the worst changes the show made, yet it’s still so, so telling that they failed to see why it’s important to let your characters do bad things, to make mistakes, because that’s how a story can carry on. that’s how you give a story depth.
