They sat in McGonagall’s office and waited for her. They’d been let in by one of the other staff members and told that she was on her way. 

Regulus had his left hand in James’s, his right in Sirius’s, and Remus had his hand on his knee. He felt very safe, if not a bit claustrophobic. He’d been wracking his brains over who could have done it, but he always came up blank. He really didn’t know anybody that well on his course. And he didn’t think he’d offended anyone enough for them to cause the amount of damage they did. His question was answered when the office door opened and Minerva strode in, followed by a beefy, acne-covered twenty-something-year-old. Regulus had no idea who he was, but judging by the reaction of James, Sirius and Remus, they did. 

“Mulciber?!” Sirius spat as he tried to raise himself out of his seat, but Remus’s arm across his lap held him down. Regulus turned to James. 

“Who is he?” He asked. James’s eyes never left Mulciber while he answered Regulus’s question. 

“He’s in our year. He’s best friends with someone we don’t get along with.”

“Snape,” Sirius hissed, trying again to get out of his seat. This time, Regulus helped Remus to keep his brother sitting. He’d only make it worse. 

Regulus had no idea who Mulciber was, but Snape was a familiar name. He’d been one of the others in the competition to display their art at the art show, but Regulus had beaten him out for the top spot with ‘Burk with a ‘Nana’. Did that have something to do with this? He'd never even met the guy.

“Mr Mulciber has confessed to breaking and entering with the intent to destroy a painting of yours, Mr Black,” McGonagall said, bringing him back to the present. “He says he acted alone and that no one else was involved,” The tone of her voice and the way her brow ached told Regulus that she didn’t believe it for one minute. 

“I-I-I-If he’s friends with Snape, I think I know why I was targeted,” Regulus said, his words getting stronger as three hands squeezed him reassuringly. He told McGonagall his theory, and by the paleness of Mulciber's face, he’d hit the nail right on the head. 

“Well, Mr Mulciber, what do you have to say to that?” McGonagall asked. Mulciber was sweating profusely, and his skin had turned a pale sickly green. 

“Snape told me to do it. That Black had cheated him out of the art show and that his art should be displayed and not the rubbish he painted. He told me I’d never get caught!” 

“Nor would you have if you hadn’t been bragging about it in the cafeteria,” Minerva snapped at him. She turned her gaze on Regulus, and her features softened. “Rest assured I will be following this up and dealing with it accordingly. If you would like to return to the Halls, I can make that happen for you, a fresh start in a different part of the camp, maybe?” Regulus shook his head. 

“No, thank you, Minerva. I’m happy where I am,” He could see the beaming smile on James’s face out of the corner of his eye and knew James felt exactly the same way.

I'm willing to go out on a limb and suggest that Linda Hamilton's character is going to be a subversion of what she's best known for.

If we look at the 80s stars they've brought on to the show, that's what's been done with them.

Sean Astin is known for playing unlikely heroes (Mikey Walsh, Rudy). He gets killed after a moment of courage.

Paul Reiser was known for playing fast-talking weasels (Det. Friedman (a good guy weasel is still a weasel), Carter Burke). He's ends up playing an ambiguously trustworthy, but ultimately naive scientist who thinks he can do good working with bad people.

Robert Englund needs no introduction, being perhaps the most famous slasher in film history. However, in Stranger Things he plays the victim of a supernatural villain and later is mutilated by his own hands.

I think it stands to reason that we can expect a similar treatment with good ol' Sarah Connor.

She's not going to be a hardened badass military officer or anything like that. She's going to be someone sweet, like Sarah Connor was before the Terminator went after her.

I'm calling it now.

Who is the voice of the female Deputy?

When I saw this question, I decided to try to find an answer.

I looked up all the actors listed in the credits, listened to their voices (in interviews, demo reels, or other videos), and… I’m still not sure who played the female Deputy.

While I usually find it relatively easy to recognize voice actors in French, my native language, it turns out that’s much harder for me to do in English. Also, it doesn’t help that they’re usually very good at changing their voice/accent and that, in real life, most of them don’t sound like the characters they play.

I still believe the person who played the female Deputy is also “Cult Follower Female 5” (CFF5), but it seems to me the actor used a different accent and tone so the cultist sounds a bit “villainous”. In any case, I didn’t find anyone that sounded exactly like the two characters…

According to my ears, though, the female Deputy and the female Captain from New Dawn have the same voice. Outside of cutscenes, the Deputy has 314 lines in Far Cry 5 (which you can listen to here, here, here, here, and here) and the audio files were all reused for the Captain. In cutscenes, so the “lines” that were specifically recorded for New Dawn, the character sounds exactly the same to me, which means the voice actor must have worked on both games.

I looked at the names that appeared in the credits of the two games and narrowed the list down to the 15 (+1; see below) likeliest candidates, so here are the people who, in my opinion, could potentially be the voice of the female Deputy, as well as, when the information was available, either in the game or on IMDb, which character(s) they played:

Again, English isn’t my first language, and after spending two days listening to all those voices, everyone started to sound the same to me :’) If you’re a native English speaker and/or have a great ear, though, maybe you’ll be able to more easily solve the mystery! We can do it!

*IMDb says Amber Goldfarb played “Noodle’s owner” (the woman who called Ms. Mable for her pet snake) but the files tell me the voice is actually “Civilian Female 6”, so Mara Junot.

Arya, family secrets, and archives in "That Awkward Magic!!" [Part 2]

Continued from part 1

Anyway, she tells Ansel that Nana is a criminal and a fugitive, while Evan worries that Ansel isn't contacting him. After an interlude with Evan and two of his classmates, we get back to Arya and Ansel. She notes that Nana had magic classified as "unrecognized," which is what is said about witches whose magic has been removed, and that she has elemental magic of some type. Ansel isn't sure what to think, with Arya telling him that Nana has power over plants and informs him that he comes from a "lineage of extinct magic," thinking he may have inherited some of the magic.

She further warns him that if the committee found out about this lineage, there would be dire consequences and guesses that since Nana was part of the committee, she "managed to change the information on the archives" so that the family tree doesn't link to him. She tells him that the less the committee knows about this, the better. Later, he unlocks a door in the house and finds Nana holding his father (who is homophobic by the way) suspended in the air using magic.

Nana admits that she knew the record was wrong but did nothing about it when she found out

In the webcomic that follows, Ansel is infuriated with Nana, demanding that she let his father down and not brainwash him. He goes onto say that while he wants his father to accept him, he doesn't want her making decisions for him. She later goes onto admit that the archival record is correct and that her magic was misclassified, implying that the committee has something to do with her losing her magic. While she says that she will answer his questions later, he has none of this and demands that she never contact Evan again, with her thinking this is just teen angst. After some arguments back and forth with some of his siblings, like him wearing some of his sister's clothes, his homophobic dad says he is grounded and can't go to a wedding, so he leaves anyway, saying that Nana gave him permission. He ends up at the house of his friend, Aaron, who he has a crush on.

Now, this reminds me a lot of Lore Olympus in the somewhat confusion of libraries and archives, although to the credit of the webcomic, it is only called a library in passing one time before it is referred to as an archive every other time. Also, the bit about records being deleted in the archives reminds me of the Star Wars franchise, as the reason that Obi-Wan couldn't find the record of Kamino was that someone had deleted it, specifically Count Dooku, when he was a Jedi before he joined the Dark Side and became a Sith.

Record erasure is just as bad as outright record destruction, which Marceline the Vampire Queen demands of Finn as she thinks she will die in an episode of Adventure Time, the first episode of the Stakes mini-series:

In any case, I really enjoyed this mention of archives and how they fit into the overall story. The creator, SomeBunny, deserves praise (and support) for writing such an issue of the webcomic which includes archives like this. It is something I hope that other webcomics can do too. Whether that happens, I'm not sure, but I'll remain hopeful.

What if… when James and Lily Potter died they both end up leaving their two daughters, Iris Lily Potter and Amaris Dorea Potter.

The youngest Potter daughter Iris Lily Potter survive the killing curse that took the lives of their parents, and she was declared by Dumbledore as the Girl-Who-lived. Before she and her older twin sister are both left in the door step of private drive number 4 in the cold November night of 1981 with just a letter.

The Potter twins grew up different from one another, while they are indeed twins they aren't close like other twins and Iris the oldest Potter child prefer to stay away from her sister that by the time they were 9 years old the Dursley abandon one of them which happen to be the Youngest Potter, Amaris Dorea Potter was left in a park alone where she found by Nana Sawada and when she hesrd her story she has chosen to adopt Amaris Potter as her newest daughter.

Nana Sawada isn't a normal she is a daughter of Lyra Black who is a core witch and Alder Elymas who is a magi, Nana's parents marriage was to see if it was possible to produce a child with both a magic core and circuits, normally a person could only be born with either a magic core or with magic circuits, a hybrid of the two before until now.

Nana Sawda took Amaris Potter to gringotts to have an inheritance before she offical adopt her as her daughter.

Amaris Dorea Potter now 17 years old and recently graduated Mahoutokoro school of Magic. Amaris fight along side her servant through the war but during the middle of war they both fell in love with one another.

During the destruction of the Holy Grail a taint mud spill out of the grail and end up touch Gilgamesh and infoing so cause him to have a body of flesh and bone once more. Amaris purified Gilgamesh new body before leaving Fuyuki. As one of the survivng master of the grail.

        The Vongola family sent the Sun Arcobaleno to tutor the only heir of Vongola left the 14 years old daughter of Iemitsu Sawada. To train Tsunami Sawada as the future 10 Boss of Vongola since the other legitimate candidate as the next boss all died and she is the last Legitimate heir, so the Sun Arcobaleno Reborn was sent to Namimori to teach Tsunami to be tge next Vongola Boss. 9 years has pass since Iris Lily Potter last seen her younger twin sister who tge dursley abandon her somewhere I thought she was long dead or a squib since she never appeared in Hogwarts when we both turn 11 years old but I was proven mistaken after the war end a couple montgs ago I took an inheritence test it show that Amaris is still vety much alive and a witch that only meqns she could have gone in different magical school than Hogwarts so she would most likely have grew up outside England and away from the war when it broke out.

I also found out the friends I thought I have weren't really my friends at all they were all with her because of the money my old headmaster has been paying them since the beging of their first year and the only reason they efen help her tract down all the dark lord's horcrux and destroy them in order for their family to survive they help her tract them all down. She also potion in her system that wasn't suppose to be their at all. She payed the goblins handsomely to flash out all the potion in her system before asking them all retrived all her stolen money get it back with intrest.

After the war she didn't want to stay in England, she decided to reunite with her sister while they didn't always get along, but then again siblings fight sometimes but they are still family. When she was leaving England, 

Draco Malfoy decided to join her since nothing is holding him back in England. And during their 4th year they became secretly friends so it was no suprise to them both that they fell in love.

They both settle in japan quite nicely, while Iris Potter dose miss her godson Teddy  Lupin who is currently beging raised by his grandmother Andromeda Tonks who lost almost all her family except for her godson which is why Iris isn't the one raising Teddy since he is the one one holding Andromeda from taking her own life and join the rest of her family.

It wasn't long before Iris Potter saw her younger twin sister the current lady of the house of Black and Peverell. Amaris and Iris are catching up to the lost time they both have when they were both sepereted from one another. Iris even meet Amaris current fiancée Gilgamesh

Who they found out was once a heroic spirit until ancident happen during the fourth Holy Grail War that made him bone and flash. Which Amarus has purified his new body after words just incase before they left the Area and continue their life. He once was a king during his first life before he became a Heroic spirit. They got to know him Iris like him better than her ex-friend Ron Weasley. 

   During that time Iris Potter also meet her twin's adopted sister Tsunami and her adopted mother Nana, she got along with the two people who was with Amaris after they seperated. Nana evenutaly became Iris 2nd mother figure better than Molly Weasley ever did. 

Tsunami Sawada is try all she can to stop herself from become the next Mafia Boss of Vonogola.

James kissed him, and it just felt right. Regulus nearly whined when James began to pull away, but then he did something that shocked even him. He pulled James back to him and sunk back into his bed. He’d closed his eyes when he lay back, but now they flickered open. He caught sight of a strip of golden skin where James’s shirt had risen up, and he couldn’t resist. He let his fingers push under the soft cotton and greedily brushed against James’s warm skin. 

Two things happened then: James let out a groan, and then he was on Regulus, his body pressing Regulus’s into the mattress, and Regulus didn’t care. 

He moved his hands up James’s back while James devoured his mouth, his tongue brushing against the seam of Regulus’s lips, and he opened his mouth for James. 

It was overwhelming. James’s tongue was everywhere, diving deep into the back of Regulus’s mouth, tasting, teasing and dragging a low moan from deep within Regulus. Regulus didn’t even have a chance to be embarrassed as James answered his moan with one of his own before moving his mouth to Regulus’s jaw and slowly kissing his way to his neck. 

Regulus was panting with all the sensations, and they were only kissing! 

“James,” He moaned as James sucked a bruise into the delicate skin of his neck. Regulus’s fingers dug into the muscled expanse of James’s back, and he couldn’t talk any more. 

They fit together so well. Regulus felt so safe with James and imagined being able to do this as much as he wanted forever. A smile took over his face, and James pulled back an equally goofy grin plastered on his face as he dipped back down, pressing quick butterfly kisses onto every inch of Regulus’s face that he could, making Regulus giggle and swat at him. “Way to ruin a moment,” Regulus grumbled, wanting very much to get back to where they were seconds before. But it wasn’t to be as James’s phone suddenly began to ping.

James moved off Regulus and opened his phone. 

“Damn it, Padfoot!” He growled at the screen. Regulus wiggled his way under James’s arm so he could see as well. It was a photo of hundreds of copies of Regulus’s drawing of him, ‘Burk with a 'Nana’, plastered all over the university. He’d forgotten about letting Sirius make copies of it before it went to the art show. He cringed back, hoping James wouldn’t be too mad at him. But then James started laughing and typing away on his phone. “My mum's going to love this,” He said, pressing send as he sent the picture to Effie. His phone dinged again and his grin widened. 

“Mary can fit me in for my stag tattoo,” He told Regulus. Regulus swallowed audibly. 

“Y-y-y-you’re actually getting that done?!” He’d thought James had maybe been joking about it. 

“Yup, can’t wait,” He beamed as he got out of the bed. He held out his hand, and Regulus took it without hesitation. He had no idea where they were going, but if it was with James, he’d follow.

needing the au to drop wherein i can commit to writing a historical au,, because since i first watched the db cooper job my mind went straight to OT3! OT3! OT3! (unlike with the van gogh job, since i aint playing with that fucking lieutenant)

one day maybe one dayyyyy i will sit down and i will write the ot3 into that episode's story. so, it'll be the backgrounds for the characters in the flashback (so, stephanie ritter, steve reynolds, and reggie wilkins), but with the necessary personality adjustments (parker, eliot, and hardison respectively). basically, vintage ot3 with some hot as hell aesthetics and secrets and avoiding as much as possible producing copraganda.

so. my thoughts. what i see happening. and this got super long so im throwing this under a cut. and for ease i will call them by their modern day canon names except when making a point.

first, general thoughts about the characters.

and so: steve to eliot. nothing much here on the surface. eliot still volunteers, too much an indoctrinated white man to have been forcibly drafted. so its still one man gone to war. one man come back. eliot would had been noticed early in training for his ability to pick shit up, and they teased at maybe sending him to a special unit. maybe they do, or maybe they don't because they just need to funnel fuckers to the jungle. the vietnam invasion was a terrorist imperialist venture and there's no romanticizing from me about anything done being at all valorous or special or brother-in-arms'y. and eliot commits war crimes under the american stars and stripes instead of just to keep moreau's champaign running. but also maybe moreau is eliot's superior. he certainly would have been rewarded for this ruthlessness. (eliot of course strove to impress moreau because there aint an eliot spencer who wasn't that man's dog at some point, i!!!! dont make the rules). eliot's friend died and eliot's gone off to carry out his wishes and moreau lets him because he Knows eliot is gonna come back. whether its to come back to the same squad, or follow him into deeper spy shit for the military, or to fuck off and go private. then eliot meets parker.

now. stephanie to parker. beth plays normal so well im mad at her, but there's something edgy and strategic about stephanie that i think parker can grab onto. i feel that maybe she was kind of a thief still, but there's more realism to this world so archie wasnt a super secret spy with lasers to practice with, but just a guy with sticky fingers whos a little bored and wants a protege. parker is good really good at what she does, and not having to deal with lasers makes me easy. but she's into scams that are less grifts and more Catch Me If You Can slight of hands. she's always looking for easy money (she was into lifting cars at one point! literally she follows where the crime is). she's doing something in an airport and someone tries to recruit her as a flight attendant because she's got the Look. and yall, flight attendants? that shit was like being a model and an astronaut and a time traveler back then. and according to a teacher i had, who once worked as in the f.a. union, those ladies back in the day were rad and queer and free spirited and runnnnning shit. i think, yes, it's a Job which i think we might resist placing parker into. but! of the jobs, at the time, i really see her rocking it during the time period. (also come on, the opportunities to swindle distracted people of their shit would be endless. they would just think they dropped their stuff in the airport! not that it was stolen.)

finally, reggie to alec. i think hardison will be the hardest to translate. even tho i admittedly listen to a lot of true crime podcasts, i dont know much about fbi life and also definitely don't know about it historically. part of me desperately wants to put him somewhere else even if it does have to stay within the fbi. i might cheat and make him like a Q(uartermaster) to 007/00s like in james bond, and he's like UGH this is horrible god i hate working for the fbi but they will give me funding so...... anyway, here's this totally cool [radio term]. that said, if hardison is stuck in the fbi, why he ends up there is that he is a fucking savant when it comes to research and the man can put together a presentation like no one else. that white man gets all the credit for profiling but it was hardison who goddamn was the google of the microfilm days. reggie felt super square but that might be because he had to deal with mcsweeties db cooper shit day in and day out for years. hardison is more himself. and definitely still a nerd. alec would be into dime fantasy novels and comics and ham radios and oh god he also would be into star trek like the original star trek as it came out and he would be into the zines yes! yessss. omg. also he plays a mean arcade cabinet. but he's mostly well adjusted but lonely. his colleagues dont appreciate him because fbi esp during that time were fucking wilding out and racist as hell aaaaaand im sorry im srry im trying so hard to have fbi hardison make sense but also! acab. ANYWAY.

second, the relationship

i think it would be fun to play with what it means to have parker/eliot start off first and bring in hardison afterwards. (if white collar is your thing, it would be like this canon divergent ot3 fic wherein peter burke is the last to join in.) i feel they would be Super Intense esp since they are carrying this big ass secret. kind of broken and dysfunctional and there's the passion and the commitment, but i think there's also a tenderness that's super hard for them to achieve? and i think there's a way that hardison plays such an important part in who they are and how they are. like, sure i think parker/eliot would have joy but they won't have levity. they would have compassion but they won't have gentleness.

eliot meets hardison after being recruited by nate. i think they get close because while nate and eliot have an interesting and compelling mentorship/friendship, nate is still eliots superior; sometimes its nice to complain about your boss, as hardison will say to eliot to try to make friends. i think hardison and eliot would become legit friends and not just work buddies because they are just not cut out of the same cloth as the rest of their colleagues. they grab beers after work. after hard days, hardison cajoles eliot into going to the arcade. they are friends. real real truly deep best friends, in a way hardison didn't think he could have with a fed and eliot didnt think he would have after his friend died. but also? they are like "buds" who are buds who are desperately tryna to cross any lines because there's a.... tension? an UST between them they dont know what to do with.

parker meets eliot by way of a "lets have my friend for dinner, he's a blast." and immediately immediately hardison is like... wow this woman is beautiful but like, really attracted to her personality. and parker things hardison is kinda dorky but cute dorkie? anyway, they have a puppy love situation growing. and it keeps growing until bam. eliot and parker are like. are we into alec???? fuck we are aren't we.

i think stephanie and steve would never tell reggie (even if somehow they were to be a thing). but parker and eliot? hell yeah they tell hardison. eventually. after a while. sooner than maybe they should. the tension if they should say something is one of the things that build up as UST between them for so long; parker and eliot know they are carrying this huge thing. two huge things. eliot being db cooper and also their massive crush on him.

if i could control myself to stick to a pwp, it would be another christmas. maybe the christmas nine (more?) years down the road. the damn snow grounded hardison's flight back to his nana's, and parker and eliot hear this and invite him over. the egg nog gets flowing and parker eventually is like,, fuck this. and comes onto hardison. and hardison would be like wow wow what but... idk, free love and swinging were In The Thoughts And Minds Of The People. he still checks in with eliot who is like. her body, man; i aint gonna tell her what to do. and for a sec hardison is like, man is this a cuck situation? i guess i can be for it but also...... aint mad if i aint alone. and eliot is so grateful and idk. i just want them all to be happy and having fun and no one to be left out. and yeah i am kinda brushing over a lot of the racial politics which, in a more developed fic rather than a pwp, would definitely need to be brought in; but idk that needs to just be in the bedrock of whatever plot is going into this.

it takes a lot of maneuvering of their lives but they make it work and eventually hardison is a keeper of eliot's secret too.

oh yeah this is a thing. anyway in april i read about uhhh.... first contact (twice), murderers on skis & victorian church politics

the yield, tara june winch a novel about indigenous australian identity and history (now and throughout the 20th century) in three narrative strands. imo the narrative strand that consists of a grandfather writing a dictionary of his language (wiradjuri) in order to prove a claim to some land is by far the strongest, but overall i liked this quite a lot. 3/5

land of big numbers, te-ping chen a solid short story collection focused on modern china and young(ish) chinese people, both in china and the diaspora. i particularly liked the stories that had some slighty surreal or speculative elements, such as one about fruit that strongly evoke emotions when eaten and a group of people stuck in a train station for months as the train is delayed, which imo use their speculative aspects in effective (if not super subtle) ways to talk about society. 3/5

the pear field, nana ekvtimishvili (tr. from georgian by elizabeth heighway) international booker prize longlist! a short, fairly depressing read about a 18-year-old girl at a post-soviet school for developmentally disabled childred (but also orphans, abandoned children & other random kids) who is trying to get a younger boy adopted by an american couple. there seem to be a lot of novels set at post-soviet orphanages etc & imo this is a well-executed example of the microgenre, with the pear field full of pears that are never picked bc they don’t taste right as a strong central image. 3/5

the warden, anthony trollope (chronicles of barsetshire #1) ah yes, a 6-part victorian series about church politics in an english town, exactly the kind of thing i’m interested in. not sure why i committed to at least the first two entries of the series but here we are. despite this lack of interest (and disagreement with most of the politics on display here) i found this quite charming; trollope has a gift for an amusing turn of phrase & making fun of his characters in benevolent ways. 3/5

the lesson, cadwell turnbull first contact scifi novel set on the virgin islands, where an alien ship arrives one day. the aliens seem benevolent & share helpful technology, but also react with extreme violence to any aggression. they claim to be on earth to study.... something, but it’s never entirely clear what. the book makes some interesting choices (like immediately skipping over the actual first contact to a few years in the future, when the aliens are already established on the islands) but i thought much of it was kinda disjointed and confusing. 2/5

the heart is a lonely hunter, carson mccullers look, i get it, it’s all about the isolation & alienation (& dare i say loneliness) of 4 miserable characters projecting their issues on the central character singer, who is kind and patient and also deaf and mute, thus making him the perfect receptacle for their issues without really having to connect with him as a person and how that isolation hinders them socially, artistically, emotionally, politically, but like... i didn’t really like it. i didn’t hate it but i just felt very meh about it all. 2.5/5

acht tage im mai: die letzte woche des dritten reiches, volker ulrich fascinating history book about the last week(ish) of the third reich, starting with the day of hitler’s suicide and ending with the total surrender (but with plenty of flashbacks and forwards), and looking at military&political leadership (german and allied) as well as prisoners of war, forced laborers, concentration camp prisoners, and everyone else. very interesting look at what kästner described as the “gap between the not-anymore and the not-yet.” 3.5/5

firekeeper’s daughter, angeline boulley) i’ve been mostly off the YA train for the last few years, but this was a really good example of contemporary YA with a focus on ~social issues. ANYWAY. this is YA crime novel about daunis, a mixed-race unenrolled ojibwe girl close to finishing high school who is struggling with family problems, university plans, and feeling caught between her white and her native familiy when her best friend is shot in front of her and she decides to become a CI for an fbi investigation into meth production in the community. i really appreciated how hard this went both with the broader social issues (racism, addiction) and daunis’ personal struggles. there are a few bits that felt a bit didactic & on the nose (and the romance... oh well), but overall the themes of community, family, and the value of living indigenous culture are really well done & i teared up several times. 4/5

the magic toyshop, angela carter i love carter’s short stories but struggle with (while still liking) her novels so far. this one, a tale of melanie, suddenly orphaned after trying on her mother’s wedding dress in the garden, coming of age and awakening to womanhood or whatever. carter’s really into that. it’s well-written, sensual as carter always is, and the family melanie and her siblings are sent to, her tyrannical puppet-maker uncle, his mute wife and the wife’s two brothers, both fascinating and offputting (& dirty) make for an interesting cast of characters, but overall i just wish i was reading the bloody chamber again. 3/5

barchester towers, anthony trollope (chronicles of barsetshire #2) (audio) lol tbh i still don’t know why i am committing to this series about, again, church politics in 19th century rural england, but it’s just so chill & warm & funny (we love gently or not so gently - but always politely - mocking our characters) that i’m enjoying it as a nice little trip where people do some #crazyschemes to gain church positions or fight over whether there should be songs in church or whatever it is people in the 19th century fought about. it’s very relaxing. there also is a lot of love quadrangleyness going on and that’s also fun. trollope has weird ideas about women but like whatever, i for one wish mrs proudie much joy of her position as defacto bishop of barchester, she really girlbossed her way to the top. 3.5/5

semiosis, sue burke (semiosis #1) i love spinning the wheel on the “first contact with X weird alien species” & i guess this time we landed on plants! plant intelligence is interesting and the idea of plant warfare is really cool. i do like the structure, with different generations of human settlers on the planet pax providing a long-term view but this allows the author to skip over a lot of the development of the relationship between the settlers and the plant and locating the plot elsewhere, which i think is ultimately a mistake. i might continue w/ the series tho, depending on library availability. 2.5/5

one by one, ruth ware a bunch of start-up people go on a corporate retreat to a ski chalet in the alps, avalanche warning goes up, one of them disappears, presumably on a black piste, the rest get snowed in & completely cut off when the avalanche hits and then they get picked off *title drop* (altho really not that many of them). nice fluff when i had a miserable cold (not covid) but fails when it tries to go for deeper themes... like an attempt to address classism and entitlement sure... was made. also like what kind of luxury skiing chalet does not have emergency communication devices in case internet/phone lines are down...  i’d have sued just for that. 2/5

fake accounts, lauren oyler the microgenre of ‘alienated intellectual(ish) probably anglophone person has some sort of crisis, goes to berlin about it’ is my ultimate literary weakness - i almost never really like them, they mostly irritate me & yet i can never resist their siren call. this one is p strong on the irritation, altho at least the narrator does not ascribe much meaning to her decision to go to berlin after she a) discovers her boyf is an online conspiracy theorist (probably not sincerely) and b) gets a call that said boyf has died, it’s really just something to do to avoid doing anything else. but other than that it’s so BerlinExpat by the numbers, like she lives in kreuzkölln! put her somewhere else at least! there is one scene that elevates the BerlinExpat-ness of it all (narrator asks expatfriend for advice on visa applications, expatfriend assures her that it’s really easy for americans to get visa, adds “especially now” while literally, as the narrator remarks, gesturing at the falafel she’s eating) other than that, the novel is.... fine. it’s smart, but not really as smart as it thinks it is, which is a problem bc it thinks it’s just sooo incisive. whatever. 2/5

the tenant of wildfell hall, anne bronte this is reductive but: jane eyre: i could fix him // wuthering heights: i could make him worse // wildfell hall: lmao i’m gonna leave his ass anyway i enjoyed the part that is actually narrated by the titular tenant of wildfell hall, helen (which thankfully, i think, is most of it) because the perspective of a woman who runs away from her abusive alcoholic of a husband is genuinely interesting and engaging, while gilbert, the frame story narrator who falls in love with helen, is.... the worst. i mean he’s not the worst bc the abusive husband arthur is there and hard to beat in terms of worseness, but he’s pretty fucking bad. imagine if helen had found out that gilbert attacked her secret brother over a misunderstanding, severely injured him & LEFT HIM TO DIE & then (when dude survived & the misunderstanding got cleared up) apologised like well i guess i didn’t treat you quite right! she’d have to run away from her second husband as well! poor girl. 3/5
