On Saturday I went to the Indian Brewery by Snow Hill in Birmingham with my friends Caroline and Robert. Whilst it is listed in the Desi Pubs books I am not going to be able to rate it…
The main reason I cannot rate it is that I didn’t have a mixed grill. The only mixed grill on the menu was a sharing one at £24.95, there was no ‘regular’ or ‘standard’ and my dining partners did not fancy a mixed grill.
There could also be a debate if The Indian Brewery is actually a Desi Pub! It is clearly owned and run by Desi (or Desi heritage) folk, but the clientele were all white. There were also no television screens which whilst not necessarily a defining feature in some people’s eyes, virtually all Desi Pubs I have been to have screens showing sport. The Indian Brewery is not in an old boozer, which again virtually all Desi Pubs are and feels a bit more restauranty. It certainly does do beer though, in fact they own a brewery as you might have guessed from the name.
Interesting David Jesudason also discusses the question in the Desi Pubs book (pages 104 to 107). David suggests that the Indian Brewery and its food and drink move away from the kind of offering Desi Pub customers can expect and that a lot of people who frequent Desi Pubs don’t feel comfortable in this kind of setting. David does, however, think this may be the future of Desi Pubs! David also discusses Bundobust in this section, which is an interesting read.
All of this is not to say I didn’t enjoy the food - I did, my mini kebabs on naan were delicious as were the shared starters. I had a nice chat with them and it turns out we went on their 9th birthday - so Happy Birthday Indian Brewery.
The Indian Brewery is at Arch 15-16 Livery Street, Birmingham, B3 1EU.

#Repost @hoptilidrop Had a little trip to Manchester last weekend. First stop: @bundobust . It was a bit of a flying visit - I only had time for one beer so I needed to make a good choice! No pressure. There was a great selection available on the taps from a variety of breweries - a fair few IPA's, a sour, and a BA imperial stout... Any guesses which I chose...? Of course it was the stout. You knew that. . The stout in question was Bourbon Barrel Aged from local brewery, @squawkbrewingco I've seen some great reviews of this one doing the rounds on the old 'gram so I was pretty chuffed it was on tap. I really enjoyed this - thick, slick body with a jet black appearance. It had a really rich malt flavour with tonnes of molasses and bitter cocoa. The bourbon flavour was evident but not overpowering - for me it was definitely enough. No burn from the ABV - I floated out of there! . . . . #bundobust #bundobustmcr #Manchester #mcr #mcrbars #mcrdrinks #manchestercraftbeer #squawk #squawkbrewingco #brewery #manchesterbrewery #microbrewery #independentmanchester #indiemanchester #manc #craftbeerislife #craftbeerbars #craftbeerstore #stoutsofinstagram #breweryvisit #taproom #keg #ontap #untappd #imperialstout #barrelaging #bourbon #bourbonaged #bourbongirls https://www.instagram.com/p/CavBovevFlr/?utm_medium=tumblr

Bundobust (Manchester) – December 2019
Try out the traditional Indian flavours at Bundobust
The Manchester branch for Bundobust is where we decided to make another visit last week. Other branches include Leeds & Liverpool. We love going there as it provides small portions of a variety of Indian items and it’s fully Vegetarian, so you feel healthy. We usually have Okra fries on our visits but this time, we didn’t get them as we wanted to explore the other options.
Bundobust has a lunchtime express deal with 2 dishes for £7.50, available Mon-Fri Noon - 4pm. It’s not badly priced normally but every little bit of saving helps :)
From the lunchtime express menu, we indulged in;
Masala Dosa (ve) [£6] - A true classic with a thin crepe filled with spicy potatoes, which you can then top with lentil and aubergine soup. The aubergine provides that niche and was a very nice touch
Bundo Chaat [£4.75] - The tamarind sauce was beautiful and so addictive. This dish is samosa pastry with chickpeas, potatoes, onions, little crispy bits with yoghurt and tamarind chutney to top it off
Then, the items from the normal menu were;
Raghda Pethis (ve) [£5.50] - This was not to our expectations, and put simply it’s mushy peas with mashed potato cakes and a bit of spices. Doubt we’ll be having this again
Gobi Manchurian [£5.50] - Thick, reduced sauce with soft, yet crunchy bites of cauliflower and mushroom...need we say more *licking our lips*
We’ve still not got through the full menu, and there are definitely some items we’ll be coming back for.
Recommended for: Indian, Tapas, Okra Fries One Thing: Vegetarian Price: £ Halal: Full food menu

Old Fashioned Review #169 @BundobustMCR Manchester City Centre.
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Bundobust take a good long hard luck at yourselves. Whilst you may serve up some top quality vegetarian Indian food, your ability to mix up a Cinnamon Old Fashioned really needs some work.
Watery, tasteless, weak and quite frankly one of the worst Old Fashioned cocktails we have tasted. The Gentlemen of The Society would even go as far as saying that you should issue an unreserved apology to The Old Fashioned Cocktail for daring to serve up such a poor attempt at a cocktail.
For dramatic effect, we are withholding a score for this review.
