let's get into it. the most incoherent and nonsensical rant of all time ig.

the symbolism of the Knife (™) in Mission Impossible

our first introduction to the knife comes all the way back in MI1. It's used to kill sarah - ethan finds it lodged in her body. It's interesting that sarah's body is the only one ethan ever sees with his own eyes - it makes the horrifying events of the night real. once confronted with the body of his friend, ethan can no longer consider this a bad dream or a delusion. it's real, his friends are dead, he has nowhere to go, the authorities are after him.

so the first role the knife plays signifies ethan's loss of innocence. (bear with me, this is going to make sense in a minute. or not.)

next time we see the knife, it's in the hands of franz krieger. he's a secondary antagonist; his role is to provide a clue to ethan as to which side he's on, and die messily at the end. it's here that ethan recognises the weapon in his hands, and starts to put the pieces together. (krieger has the knife that killed sarah + krieger was brought to the team by claire = something fishy is up.)

the most significant scene with the knife is, of course, when krieger tries to kill a person with it and ethan stops him. it should be noted that, upto this point, the audience doesn't really know shit about ethan's moral alignment. is he looking for revenge? is he looking for a way to clear his name, and nothing else? is he even a good person, worth rooting for beyond the fact that his friends are dead? who knows?

until this scene. "zero body count." it immediately establishes ethan as a person who is unwilling to sacrifice even a single life, no matter what. It may be argued that it would be justified for a spy to kill in this specific circumstance (1. ethan needs to clear his name 2. the NOC list needs to be taken for ethan to figure out what is going on) but he. doesn't. I don't think ethan directly kills a single person in the film.

the point here is that the knife, previously shown as something that is meant to destroy ethan's character, is then used to build his character up instead, showing him as somebody who's morally good even in the worst circumstances of his life.

now, we can fiiiiiinally come to MI8.

a role played by the knife in the first film was also to destroy the life of william donloe, the guy supposed to guard the NOC list. it gets him sent to a far-flung corner of the world for the rest of his life. wow, bet he's pretty pissed at ethan, right?

wrong. he's found a new life for himself with a wife he loves very much. he thanks ethan for giving him a life he's proud of. the knife that was supposed to be the end of his life was actually the beginning. (cheesy af but words not wording rn. sory.) he's a major player in the endgame, and he gets to survive along with his wife.

now! the last use of the knife. unless I'm very, very, very mistaken (in which case I will delete my entire blog), it is used by paris for the emergency surgery in the doomsday vault to save benji. and i. just. does anything really need to be said about that. the knife used to kill ethan's friend now being used to save ethan's friend.

the point of this whole post!!!! was to emphasise the fact that the knife always, always signifies turning a bad situation into a good one. it's a representation of ethan (mr. Impossible Mission) managing to flip the script everytime and make the absolute best of the suckiest situations he gets into.

tldr: the knife is a metaphor for the soul of mission impossible which describes how the man's greatest strengths stand out in his worst moments. "you use a scalpel, i prefer a hammer" wrong, angela basset, ma'am. they use a knife.

also if you made it to the end. you are now my friend without introduction. have a picture of peak eye candy ethan hunt and the unholy spirit that guides him.

this is the one i am the most confused about, the way wwe has been moving with john’s heel turn recently is making me think he’ll come out with the W via cheap shot but on the other hand, punk could come in to NOC as the version of punk that left with john’s title (circa 2011). I think a recreation of that “blowing a kiss” moment from MITB 2011 would be SOOO dope and could set us up for a really good cody or randy feud.

Black Org episodes! I have no clue what these ones are about though. It seems to be NOCs being taken out by them, specifically the FBI.

Oh new opening. Kind of meh, to be honest but it's better than the ones that push the bad romance between Shinichi and Ran.

...I also forgot Camel was supposed to be dead and being known to be alive could fuck up their plan with Kir and thats because Gosho has never brought it up as an issue before and it just infuriates me with Gosho's weak writing when it comes to the plot.

Alright so <3 this is mostly just me being pissy about gosho saying things and neglecting to elaborate on them in a way that accounts for the other things he's willfully ignoring. It's really not that deep in the end and has no real impact on anything but my sanity <3 Also I'm currently at uni so this will most likely feel rambly and disjointed (+ I do not have m13 on hand rn, although I very recently rewatched it), but here we go anyway

My gripe with Gosho making that specific movie case actually canon stems from a couple different things. One: we get nothing from Conan/Kogoro that hints at them remembering the case, even vaguely, despite both of them actually playing a pretty big role in steering the police in the right direction (Kogoro was the one who actually recognized the geographical 1:1 constellation pattern of the serial killings) and actually ensuring that an innocent man didn't jump off a building in order to create the perfect crime for the real culprit to walk away from (Conan got there first. He was the one who got it right and arrived on top of the tower long before anyone else did and talked down the guy from committing suicide). This of course means that they were canonically never involved in the m13 case at all.

However, even if we're supposed to accept that Conan and Kogoro were never there in the first place and if we suppose the police managed to crack the case on their own, that would have still taken them much too long for a time window as tiny as the one they had in the movie. This either means a guy committed suicide by jumping off that tower and was widely accepted as the actual culprit, or he jumped off that tower and only later was the real culprit caught. In any case, as many other things, this serial killings case + suicide should have been widely covered by the media by virtue of being fairly exceptional even among other serial murders (they literally had to call over multiple officers and inspectors from various prefectures to investigate it), but we get nothing that hints this ever happened— not even a thought bubble along the lines of "oh yeah I heard of that" from any of the uninvolved parties. DetCo's trend of randomly adding bits of lore continues with this, which I know isn't the end of the world. We have a goddamn floating timeline anyway, so asking for coherence is a bit much. But come on. No one but Yui/Yamato/Yamamura (vaguely) recalls this massive case????

Thing number two is maybe more easily ignored, but it's still kinda annoying to me: the entirety of the BO subplot is essentially reduced to nothing. The reason why Irish took Matsumoto's place, that tiny little sliver of BO activity existing outside of Conan's scope and reach— the victim who was BO, the BO's very own NOC list, the BO existing in a dimension that doesn't tie back to Kudo Shinichi and therefore illustrates how limited Conan's influence against them is— have been either 100% erased from the case itself or (much less likely) glossed over and shelved as "yeah actually this also happened but uhhhh we do not think about it ever".

Obviously the easiest answer is "the BO was never involved at all" because if they were and Conan wasn't, then actually the police would have had a fuckton of officers knocked out on the tower, one to (possibly) two additional corpses (innocent guy and maybe the real culprit), and then a third unidentified corpse along with a destroyed memory card thingy (Irish). Would the police even have found the real superintendent in time for him not to die of dehydration? We have to assume they did somehow, despite having no way of knowing where to look (as that particular mystery was taken care of by Agasa and the DB in the movie, and only later was the police informed— Sato and Takagi, if memory serves me right).

Like I said before, in the end it's not that deep. But it is annoying because we have one version of events that actually maybe addressed Shinichi's character and the very real fear of having everyone he loves being found and killed + the very real threat of his real identity being found, all of which isn't canon, but we do have a one-off mention of the case around which m13 and said themes are built and explored and absolutely zero fucking clue of how that shitshow could have been dealt with... Because Gosho wanted to introduce the concept of "Yamamura mistakenly thinks he's met Komei before".... with a bit of added spice, I guess???? Because he couldn't just have Yamamura go "uhm actually. Have we met before"????

I know. I know there doesn't need to be a point to random lore drops and gosho can do whatever he wants forever anyway but on godddddd is it annoying sometimes. That's a whole ass serial murder case!!! Which wouldn't have been solved in time without Kogoro and Conan!! You need to pick!!! Is the police kinda useless or can they actually do things without the gremlin!!!

This review is gonna be all about...

Gundam Lfrith Thorn

I wasn't expecting to build this kit so soon but I saw it in my local nerd store and I just had to pick it up, I really love the design on this one and I can't wait to tell yous all about it! Building this felt like an appropriate step-up from the Demi Trainer.

Lfrith Thorn in the Show

(Spoilers for Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury episode 12 and beyond ahead)

EDM-GA-02 Gundam Lfrith Thorn is a Gundam-type mobile suit developed by Ochs Earth Corporation for Dawn of Fold, the anti-spacian organisation. It's a heavily modified version of the XGF-01 Gundam Lfrith Pre-Production Model, which can be seen in the prologue episode of the show.

This Gundam is piloted by Norea Du Noc, a member of Dawn of Fold. She was trained from a young age to be a mobile suit pilot, and has strong ideals and a deep hatred of all spacians. She's a hot-headed earthian terrorist who believes in attaining the organisation's goals through violence. A perfect pilot for this offensive-oriented Gundam!

As I mentioned previously, Lfrith Thorn is a heavily modified version of the Lfrith Pre-Production Model, which allows the Lfrith Thorn to utilise GUND technology. It was created alongside the Lfrith Ur, and the two can be seen as sort of sisters, as one compensates for the other's weaknesses. It's a very cool dynamic that I really enjoyed seeing in the show!

Lfrith Thorn is seen multiple times throughout the show, but main appearances include episode 12, when it attacks Plant Quetta alongside the Lfrith Ur. It also appears in episode 14, fighting in the Rumble Ring and causing mayhem, once again alongside the Lfrith Ur. We see it once more in episode 20, when Norea goes on a rampage in Asticassia, before she is calmed down by Elan Ceres and her Gundam is subsequently destroyed by the security forces. Seeing this Gundam in action was always a pleasure to see in the show, and Norea's hot-headed yet focused personality really made it stand out as an effective combat mech, especially when paired with Lfrith Ur! I wish we got to see more of it but what we did see was an absolute treat.

The Design of Lfrith Thorn

I. LOVE. THIS. DESIGN. SO MUCH! It's so cool and it all makes sense for what this Gundam is supposed to achieve! It can look quite goofy, especially with those long arms and chunkier legs, but there's purpose to that design choice! Lfrith Thorn excels at offensive skirmishes and intense combat scenarios, providing heavy fire support to her sister, Lfrith Ur.

Lfrith Thorn comes equipped with a variety of weapons that allow it to adapt to any combat situation. It's primary weapon is the beam diffuse gun, a large firearm that fires energy scatter beams. It can be wielded with one hand or with both, allowing for more accurate and focused fire. Beam saber units are stored within the Lfrith Thorn's forearms, allowing for quick deployment when engaging in melee combat. It can also equip beam sabers on its hand if needed, though this Gundam is better suited for longer-range combat. A long and narrow shield can be seen on it's right arm, which can be used to deflect incoming fire, though it is not particularly effective due to how small it is. The huge cannon mounted on Lfrith Thorn's back is the phased array cannon. It fires a powerful beam which allows for wider-ranged attacks. This cannon is only operable when the Gundam's permet score reaches 3 or higher, making it a very risk-reward oriented weapon!

Considering how heavy all of these weapons are on this Gundam, it's very important for it to keep stable when fighting on the ground. This is where those goofy design choices I mentioned earlier come in! The heavy legs and longer arms result in a lower center of gravity, making the Lfrith Thorn more stable when providing fire support! The thrusters on it's rear waist also offer extra stability, being able to counter the recoil and pushback from sustained fire if needed. Even the feet are used for stability, being able to dig into any softer ground material the Lfrith Thorn may be standing on, and providing even more stability! Everything about this design is so coherent, despite it's inherent goofiness, and I absolutely am in love with it!

Naturally, one would compare the Lfrith Thorn and Lfrith Ur, as they are often seen in combat together. You can see the more support-oriented design philosophy of the Lfrith Thorn when looking at both Gundams side by side. Despite the heavy weaponry, the frame of the mech is visibly more lightweight, allowing the Lfrith Thorn to reposition more easily. The Lfrith Ur is meant to be on the frontline, while the Lfrith Thorn supports it from afar. It's an awesome dynamic and I think both Gundams are designed really well around this cooperation!

In the first section of this review I mentioned that the Lfrith Thorn is a modified version of the Gundam Lfrith Pre-Production Model, and you can definitely see some aspects of that design incorporated into this one! You can see this mainly in the body of the Gundam, as it retains that flatter, more extruded chest to house the pilot and shell unit. The back-mounted cannons are still present in both designs, though the cannons themselves are quite different between the Lfrith Thorn and the Pre-Production Model. You can also see a more refined version of the shoulder pads, as they are more exaggerated and armoured on the Lfrith Thorn.

Honestly, researching Lfrith Thorn led me down a very deep rabbit hole when it comes to design inspirations and origins and I feel like I could make a family tree that connects MANY of the Gundam designs in this show!

Building the Kit

Much like the Demi Trainer, this was super fun to build! I was so excited to finally build a Gundam, and this did not disappoint, for the most part!

A lot of the same satisfying aspects of building the kit itself that I mentioned in my Demi Trainer review can be said here too. Fitting all the pieces together, hearing the clicks and seeing it come together is extremely satisfying and enhances the experience a lot! The stickers on this kit are more complex, and you have more choice with them, namely being able to either put stickers on it that show the Lfrith Thorn with no permet score, or a high permet score. I decided to use the high permet score stickers of course, because that looks a lot cooler to me! I found these stickers really tough to put on, as some of them are really small and need a lot of precision to place properly, and this was only my second kit. I hadn't developed a strategy for placing stickers yet and it shows in some parts of my build.

The Lfrith Thorn kit comes with a few extra pieces that allow for some really neat customisability! For example, you have the option of using a closed hand, which allows the Lfrith Thorn to hold weapons, or an open hand, which can look dramatic and badass when posing it. Even that small amount of choice with the kit makes for a lot of different things you can do with it and I think that's awesome!

As much as I love Lfrith Thorn and as much as I enjoyed building this kit, I do have a few complaints with it. To start, I personally find that the head movement on this kit is very limited, and the head has fallen off of my kit many times when I was trying to pose it and make it look in certain directions. I understand there being limitations in the range of movement, but I find it to be a little bit too limited here. I also think that the beam sword pieces are a little too easy to bend, and I recommend taking extra good care to not put too much force on them when handling them. Mine are very slightly misshapen now, and while it's not too exaggerated, it still sucks to see.

Other than that though, the kit was super fun to build, and it's by far the easiest to pose when comparing all of the kits I've built so far! The stable design philosophy of the Lfrith Thorn actually translates really well to this kit, and it's noticeably more stable to pose than other kits! It was really cool to see honestly and noticing that inspired me to start this series in the first place, so thank you Lfrith Thorn!

Having been slowly learning Caravan in one of my more recent play-through and the different play styles between characters was something I noticed but kudos to these commentators for really laying out the wider implications of what it /means/ that Caravan exists! Like yeah, full decks of cards would probably be hard to find but around the New Vegas area there's probably *tons* of decks of cards (heck you can probably find playing cards anywhere), so it makes a lot of sense for this. But yeah, even if the game is a pain in the ass to play it's a great way of looking at the world and even before reading this I have been thinking about what kind of play style my own OCs (mostly Kel if I'm being honest) would use. And also people creating things within the fallout universe is something I wish to see more of! I think it's why I like the song "Ghoul" by Cowboobs on youtube so much. Initial comment from @modelmajorpita: To me caravan is proof of how much care and thought went into the setting of the game, even if most players hate it. 200 years after the bombs fell, there's going to be lots of scattered cards but few complete undamaged decks, and Caravan is played by building a deck out of random cards you find in the wasteland, with the card backs and designs not having to match. Caravan fits in the setting perfectly, it feels exactly like the sort of card game traders in a post-apocalyptic Nevada would play to kill time. Reply from @Mangaka718: reading this just now made me realize, the existence of Caravan is also proof that humanity is still creating new things and not simply scavenging the rubble of the past. In Brian David Gilbert's Unraveled about the music of Fallout, he makes a great point that one of the basic needs for human society is the existence of art, for a variety of reasons (that I won't bother going into detail about here, because if you haven't already watched that video then you should go do that, it's amazing). I'll be honest, I haven't played the other Fallout games enough to tell what music is "new" vs "old" (because I'm not a masochist in that way), but a new game certainly supports his point. Just another facet of the writers taking the setting properly into account, versus regurgitating pop culture references for clout. Reply from @DashingSteel: Caravan is honestly really fun and useful to play once you get the hang of it. One thing I noticed is that different NOC's have different skills, cards and tactics to the game. No-bark for example is quite find of using Jacks and Kings to remove cards from your caravans or over-encumber them, making you to either use a jack in the affected card or to just scrap the entire caravan, while this BASTARD trader from Arizona you can play with in the legion camp just straight up soeedruns building his own caravans and you have to bomb his ass like No-Bark did to you in order to buy yourself time to win. Caravan is a game that is really fun to play once you know to do it and build up your deck a bit.

Had very clear set-up with multiple moments showing Miu be into Sousuke (for example, someone says "when you think of someone you like, you get more power!" and Miu immediately thinks back to a time she was concerned for Sousuke in battle, and the goes "Why did I remember that!?"). However, they never actually get together despite all the build up. Miu is explicitly shown to have romantic feelings for Sosuke and Sosuke is oblivious. However it never really goes anywhere beyond hints.

norea and el5n:

One of them (Norea) was killed just after accepting a proposal to travel the world with Elan. Spoilers! Norea gets killed right as she is agreeing to El5n's plea for them to escape the war* and run away together instead of laying down their lives as replaceable tools. *(referring to it as "the war" is a oversimplification of the political conflict they're involved in, done on purpose to save time/space for this submission)  (Side note that I think should be taken into consideration in classifying the ship as straight bait: The actual main couple of the show is an f/f couple. 12. What's the funniest or craziest AU idea you've ever come up with?

Oh you're coming out kicking, huh?

I'm honestly not sure whether I can judge that; after all, I live in the land of crack taken seriously, and once I'm in that state, even if it is silly, I can't not take it seriously anymore? So somebody else would probably have to decide if I've lost my mind with this or that one.

I think I thought about Akai, mutable as he is, as a bee who's really into Rei once; that was pretty wild?

If we're talking crazy, I guess the Pest Control AU comes to mind: in which the whiskey trio start systematically killing BO agents and framing them as NOCs to cover up their own traces; this murderous spree brings them closer to Gin, who eventually refers to them as his Pest Control squad, hence the name. Hiro is extracted after getting his cover blown, but Akai and Rei are in too deep, and without Hiro there to remind them of their humanity, they go off the deep end. None of this is sanctioned by the FBI or PSB of course, so despite Hiro's efforts AkAm are eventually declared as rogue agents and hunted down. They commit lovers' suicide before they can be captured, and there's an afterword of Hiro advocating for better communications and support for field agents. Perhaps with help, they would not have needed to go so far.

Other than that...I guess if we're talking funny there's also the keyhole verse you participated in building, which is kinda omegaverse but not nearly as dystopian? The idea of Akai running around all covered up getting Rei's inner Victorian man all hot and bothered is very funny to me.

Hmmm...I guess lastly one that could qualify is the no-BO AU where Hiro and Yukiko have founded a school to teach young women to be proper wives (with cooking, cleaning, finance, etc lessons). Akai is attending because Vermouth just married his mother, and she's a teacher there (for seduction or some such nonsense), and he wants to get a feel for his mother's new lover. At the school he runs into Rei, who was roped into teaching cooking classes by Hiro. Because Akai is a particularly desperate case (or perhaps he's only pretending to be, who knows), he gets private lessons from Rei. Rom-com ensues, while Kai tries to dig up dirt on Vermouth.

We've had a lot of fun times :)

13. What's a character or ship you haven't written/drawn yet but would like to some day?

The serious answer is Koumei. If I want to write about Rei and his Hiro baggage, I think it would be important to talk with Koumei. Unfortunately, Koumei talks like that™, and I do not have enough knowledge about proverbs to even attempt to do him justice.

In a similar vein, I think I will need to tackle Takagi and Satou at one point, because they too are connected to Rei's dead friends.

The silly answer is YamaHiro. They don't even have a friendship tag, let alone a relationship one. It's a tragedy. They could be so cute...alas. Maybe one day I will write about them.

Does AkAm count?? I hadn't planned on ever writing fic at all, after a single disastrous attempt as a teen. And then you had to come along and fill my head with dreams and ideas and well. Now here we are.

Hmm... I think I'm going to cheat. Instead of the media in question, I think I'm going to nominate a video game. You can probably already guess which one-

- yeah, it's Disco Elysium, everyone likes Disco Elysium. I think with Akai canonically having a Holmes collection, and nerding out at crime scenes as Okiya with Rei, it stands to reason he likes his detective-ing. I like to imagine that aside from useful hobbies like cooking, Akai also picked up some others to pass the time, perhaps including gaming. (Catgirl streamer Okiya lives in my dreams, shush.) And I just think Akai would have a lot to dig into with the game, especially if it's after his own "death". There's a lot of trying to find your own identity and purpose in an unyielding world in that game, and I think it would suit him well to play it at a time where things surely are quite uncertain for him, too.
