Marzi's Old House Supply Kit: A Non-Exhaustive List
So you've moved into an old house! Congratulations! No, no, look at me. Look in my eyes. Congratulations. You don't need smart lighting. You don't need paltry things like "showers that don't make ungodly noises if you set the water outside a very specific temperature range" or "logical staircases." Because those people who say They Built Them Sturdier Back Then is survivorship bias are wrong, lead paint is only a problem if you eat it, and your new home is basically a tank
also it might have stained glass. so basically you win
(no but seriously the Survivorship Bias argument is just like. tell me you don't live in a city with large quantities of remaining working-class 110-year-old buildings without telling me. I do. they're sturdier. end of.)
but you might need some things to make it a bit more comfortable. here's what I've found, over eight years of living in houses built 1920 or earlier
Power strips. Depending on the age of your house, it may or may not have had electricity originally. And even if it did, whoever lived there almost certainly had fewer things to plug in than the average denizen of the 2020s. There also may have been gorgeous wall sconces that some asshole heartlessly ripped out at some point, forcing you to use the hideous hateful Overhead LightTM or plug in a bunch of lamps. Either way, you're going to need to turn that single outlet in the room into several more. Hence, power strips.
(hey, I never said this list was free of my design biases. deal)
A Good Fan. You may live in a place where retrofitting with air conditioning was commonplace in the last several decades. I do not. So a good pedestal fan can make the difference between comfort and just not sleeping at all from late June to mid-September. Weirdly, I did once look at a place that was from the 1850s and had been retrofitted with central A/C, which is vanishingly rare in even urban Massachusetts. But I digress.
A stud-finder. "Marzi, you spent years of your life explaining to tourists that picture rails existed because trying to hammer nails directly into horsehair plaster and then putting weight on them did Bad Things." Yes I did. "What did you attempt to do the second week of living in your first house with horsehair plaster?" ...shut up. I used the Poltergeist Method to find solid wood- I don't know if it's actually studs or the lath or what; I'm not a builder -to hang my Lady and the Unicorn tapestry from, namely knocking on the wall until it doesn't sound hollow. You might want to go a bit quieter and more advanced. Or, if you have a picture rail, embrace the "long visible hanging wires" look. It is in fact there for a reason!
Window screens. You are actually required by Massachusetts state law to provide these to your tenants. Doesn't mean my last landlady did. And if you own your place, live in another state, or have a similarly laissez-faire building owner, you might end up needing to Bring Your Own Insect-Blocking Shield. Just make sure you've got them, one way or the other. Because see above re: fan vs. air conditioning in old houses.
WD-40. When's the last time those hinges were oiled? Potentially before television. And they WILL squeak. UPDATE I HAVE BEEN INFORMED THAT WD-40 IS NOT A GOOD LONGTERM SOLUTION. Find "actual oil." Not sure what the more specific name is. Good to know!
That's just what I've found needful so far, but I'm happy to update the list as required!
And you'd better believe, if I owned my own place, this would include "the name of a preservation contractor to undo all the unnecessary ~*MoDeRnIzInG*~ aesthetic bullshit the past owners did since the End of Mainstream Western House Beauty AKA 1920 (That Brief Rococo Revival In the 1930s Can Maybe Sit With Us)"
#long post#old houses#I've seen posts on r/Boston complaining about 'crappy old apartments' and longing for the modern Luxury Condos and like#couldn't be me#if this were a city where Old Apartment meant 1950s or later yeah I'd understand that#no beauty to compensate for the Quirks#but there's like a 75% chance you live in a building from 1915 or earlier if you live here#and I cannot relate to wanting to live in Ye IKEA Plastic Construction Hellscape over that#also don't take this in like a marble statue profile pic guy way- I also think older house styles from other parts of the worldwere prettie#than what they have now#and usually sturdier to boot

Something something trapped kid in a pipe at a home renovation and his older brother going in to save him Eddie and saving his sisters from their parents and Eddie reconstructing his life in the aftermath of Shannon…
#something something about Eddie reconstructing his life like a home renovation after the well call - putting buck into his will - rebuilding#his life after grieving Shannon - subconsciously moving on even if he wasnt aware he was moving on#and how having this call back now is a symbol of Eddie actually being ready to move on now - not just in his subconscious mind#it’s the intertwining of Shannon and buck and the connection to Chris#I can’t articulate it well - but being trapped underground and in water and the passing of parenthood from Shannon to buck - in Eddie’s mind#as much as anything#something about an older brother being prepared to save a younger sibling by risking himself - something about Eddie sacrificing himself#for his sisters#there’s actually a lot of layers to this#something about this kid being closer to the surface than Hayden was - something about Eddie being closer to the surface - closer to#figuring himself out - figuring out how to love his life on his own terms#something about construction of a home and construction on sunset and construction and Eddie#something about Eddie trying to build something from a far with Shannon but never getting past the foundations#(Christopher)#meanwhile he’s been constructing the walls etc with buck and repairing damage#and he has reached the point where he needs to put a roof on the house so that he can start kitting it out with a kitchen etc#the roof is Eddie’s figuring himself out - his queerness and embracing his love for buck#kitting it out is them furnishing a life together#I don’t know what this rambling is - but I am feeling a certain type of way about the possibility of this trapped#kid in a pipe call and it’s connection to Eddie#911 spoilers#eddie diaz#911 abc#thinking thoughts that make no sense!#buddie

Love (cannot emphasis how much sarcasm there is in that word) that an official Canadian government response to high cellphone rates is to switch carriers.
Switch it to what? We basically have three companies since one was allowed to eat the forth (with the government saying it wasn't anti-competition and the company eating the other pinky promising they wouldn't jack rates up). Even the smaller companies have to rent infrastructure from the Big Three so there's only so much they can do if that rent costs an arm and a leg.
And that's not touching on how many "small companies" are actually just subsidiaries of the Big Three. You may save $5 but you're still with Telus/Rogers/Bell.
Or that the actual small companies tend to have shit coverage because they don't have the infrastructure available to them and are prevented from getting it. Or their traffic is throttled in favour of the Big Three's customers. Or both.
Or that they're extremely regional thus aren't an option for a huge chunk of Canada's population.
We have no true options and the government has shown time and again that they're fine with monopolies, in multiple industries, and don't care when said monopolies jack up prices to make shareholders and the c-suite more money at the expense of everyone else. At most there will be a verbal slap on the wrist and a giftcard for $25 that people have to register for, for a decade and a half of price gouging.
It's not talked a whole lot about outside the country from what I've seen and heard but Canada is a country of monopolies. A handful of companies own nearly everything, every province has a family or two that owns a hell of a lot (Nova Scotia is basically owned by one family at this point), and our government ignores it. Even the branch that is supposed to be against monopolies is fine with mergers and takeovers in most cases.
Because, you know, the company said it totally wouldn't use consumers' lack of options to increase prices.
#canada#so much of our infrastructure and critical construction such as housing#has been pawned off for decades to private companies#and i forgot to mention one (1) family owns the bridge that is a major international corridor between canada and the us#which is apparently fine even though they fought tooth and nail to stop a bridge they don't own from being built#like our housing crisis can be traced back to the government deciding to stop building public housing in the 90s#because they figured private developers would pick up the slack#affordable apartments don't bring in much money so we got decades of cheap-ass 'luxury condos' instead#and once airbnb became a thing we got entire buildings with units <300sqft#and of course when the party in charge rotates between conservatives and neolibs nothing changes and that can gets kicked down the road#and keeps getting kicked until something collapses and they see the chance to fully privatize an industry#something similar is happening to our healthcare system too#it has been left to languish for years/decades with funding freezes and cuts#and private companies are quick to jump in and get the government stamp of approval to do [thing] that the public system clearly can't do#when [thing] would absolutely be possible if it was actually funded and/or staffed#so many communities were cut off when greyhound closed up shop because there's no government inter-city transportation#we lost internet/banking/cell service/etc nation-wide because one of the big three decided to push an update to live without redundancies#and it bugged and took the entire company's network down#even the government agency that demands major companies have a backup on a different network was taken down because they ignored that#and they got a deal if they kept their backup with rogers while their main network was also rogers#so they couldn't even make an emergency statement or anything about it#half my province also lost all digital infrastructure because it's a private company and making a redundancy line would mean smaller bonuse#it's just so bad#joke all you want about how canada is nice and friendly#but you are wrong and it's hell if you actually live here#the only reason canada is seen as nice is because it's hard to not seem like the better option when the us is your neighbour#and because of decades of pr work to make canada seem friendly and nice and not at all problematic#in some countries you actually have to try to hide you're canadian because of how much we colonize and the damage we do to other countries#yes these tags have derailed from the post but ugh#i take major issue with people who insist canada is nice and has never done anything wrong

Usually, I don't like new builds, but this one is pretty cool. It was built in 2005 in lovely Fairfield, Connecticut. 4bds, 3ba, 2.5ba, $1.798M.
Take note of the architectural details- they're amazing for a new build. Take the ceiling in the entrance hall, for example- very unusual.
It's an open concept with a living room/kitchen combo. Love the blue island and stone fireplace with built-ins.
My favorite style cabinets with legs. These are gorgeous.
The glass block backsplash is unique, too.
Off to the side is a round tower room for dining.
Has a cute little pantry, too.
Here's a lovely room for an office.
First floor powder room.
Here's what I'm talkin' about. Don't remodel an old home to look new, just buy a new one that looks like it was old and remodeled.
The primary bedroom has a wall with closets and a fireplace, plus vaulted ceilings and doors to a private terrace.
The rounded en-suite is in the tower and has a vintage reproduction tube and sink.
Beautiful secondary bedroom has a sunporch and this fantastic rounded area with a built-in desk or vanity table, plus a built-in dresser like older homes have.
Plus, it has a large closet and that beadboard feature wall.
3rd bedroom also has a nice closet and look at the inset. Each room has a special architectural feature.
Nice en-suite shower.
2 garages behind the house, plus a large deck.
There's also an outdoor shower and a medieval castle-like door.
In the rear of the yard, the gravel parking area turns into a beautiful patio and lawn.
The home is just across the road from Penfield Reef and Lighthouse Point.

deancas + for once, nobody got hurt.
For once, nobody got hurt.
The ghost had gone quietly, gratitude softening his once-angry features as Cas helped him move on without a fight, and Dean can't help his disappointment at escaping unscathed.
It's not that he wanted to get hurt, exactly, it's just that if he had, he knows Cas would've traced gentle fingers over his forehead, his jaw, his shoulder, his hand -- would've sent sparking, tingling wisps of grace through Dean's veins to seek out the damage and heal it.
And he's greedy for that touch, even if he's sure he doesn't deserve it; even if he's afraid to ask for it directly.
So, when Cas asks if he's okay, Dean shakes his head.
"No," he says, heart thudding hard with equal parts guilt and relief as Cas immediately reaches for him, "I don't think I am."
[for this askbox game if anyone else wants to send me a prompt]
#destiel#deancas#destiel fic#deancas fic#technically dean isn't lying here because he's very clearly NOT OKAY but y'know how it is when you've gotta construct intricate rituals#also for the record i'm including the dialogue tag action as part of the sentence that is Dean's speech >_>#this counts as five sentences okay#also this one took forever because i fell down a youtube rabbithole watching videos of some guy hand-building tiny houses in the forest#so much for me using this askbox game to get into the writing zone today 😵💫#cass writes fic#the deancas of it all#askbox games#thanks for the prompt anon!

modern au dad askeladd except he's not an actual dad but this random kid shows up to his house every day and tries to have beef over the closed food store askeladd bought and turned into an antiquarian store. turns out the food store used to be run by the kid's father until he passed away which is very sad of course but also askeladd is not gonna cooperate with some brat that borderline harasses him day by day. only that he can't call the cops because he kinda has a turbulent past and if they find out he's filling his store with stolen goods it's gonna become a huge problem. and note to destiny, the stupid kid finding out is not that great either because now he has to hear it out if he doesn't wanna go to prison and also he should probably learn the demon child's name while he's at it. shenanigans ensue.
#askeladd agrees to honor the memory of thorfinn's dad and in return thorfinn won't call the cops on him#then they fight about how the honoring should be done#askeladd doesn't want to change his entire store's image only to make sure people don't forget about the former owner#and thorfinn isn't satisfied with just a sign with his dad's name on it which is as far as askeladd is willing to go#things change when some rich jackass wants to buy every building on the street and turn the whole area into a luxury resort#now thorfinn and askeladd have to work together because thorfinn doesn't want his dad's store to vanish#and askeladd doesn’t want HIS STORE to be torn down because smuggling the stolen stuff out of town would be a pain#(also affordable houses with basements big enough to keep the meth laboratory running are rare these days)#(also also thorfinn learns some kind of martial art in the dojo across the street which is whatever but the coach is really nice)#(like. REALLY nice.)#(with a nice voice and a nice face and nice muscles and as if that wasn't enough he makes a kickass apple pie)#“bjorn is single btw” - “shut up thorfinn” - “i'm trying to help” - “go bother your twink why dontcha”#yeah thorfinn actually manages to make friends with the son of that asshole that tries to get their houses#great for the brat of course but now askeladd has to deal with a snobbish teen criticizing his cooking#not to mention the nosey nanny slash accountant the rich idiot hired to keep his twink son entertained who's very curious about the basement#he also knows a lot about modern art which. not great. well great for him but not for askeladd.#anyway tldr#askeladd has to save a street while trying to raise two boys that aren't his not falling in love and keeping ragnar out of the meth basement#thorkell is the construction worker hanging around and refusing to do his job until sven pays him quadruple the original agreement#vinland saga#bjornskeladd#thornute#ragnar and thorkell are also there#and sven but no one wants him to
