I know that news stories about Indigenous people leading ecological stewardship movements are very charismatic and heartwarming, and if your heritage or culture inspires you to work towards better care for the environment that is incredible and extremely admirable, but we're clear on the fact that Indigenous rights and Land Back movements shouldn't depend on First Nations people being mystical Noble Savage, Closer To Nature poster children, yes?

Indigenous self-determination applies to the person who becomes a teacher because she wants to help fill a need in underserved northern reservations. It applies to the person who studies engineering because the job market is good and he likes cool cars. It applies to the woman who works a government job because it's a stable job with a decent salary on which to raise her kids, and the woman who works a government job because she wants to represent and be a voice for her people. It applies to the person who is a lawyer trying to correct the over-incarceration of First Nations people, and her son who wants to be a professional baseball player because he loves sports. It applies to the grad student who wants to bring traditional knowledge into field work, and the goth hairdresser who spends every weekend going to punk shows and anime conventions in the city. It applies to the person who considers themself Two Spirit, and the person who uses non-binary instead because they dont feel that umbrella term fits them. None of these examples are hypotheticals- these are all people I personally know, either friends or family friends or even members of my family. All of these people are equally Indigenous, whether or not they fit your image of what a marginalized people's priorities "should" be. They are not gone, and they are not "stuck in the past". I feel like if Chujin was still alive during the events of Undertale Yellow, his and Clover's relationship would be incredibly rocky. Pacifist!Clover could bring him around to tolerating them (after all, they have that sort of effect on everyone), but it would be more in a "this human is the only 'good' human" manner than a "maybe I should reevaluate my opinions on humans overall because you can't judge an entire group based off (very biased) stories and one bad experience." Even then, that opinion would be subject to change should Clover ever get frustrated or behave "too aggressively" or act in any manner that isn't perfectly docile. If Clover ends up attacking a monster then it's "humans are just as horrible as they were in the war stories, I should've known better" regardless of the circumstances that could've pushed Clover to fight. Suffocating expectations and endless demands for patience when he wouldn't ask the same of a fellow monster.

i’m thinking of an insanely weird modern au where you’re a graduate student and childe is in your cohort. you’re nervous but excited to continue your education, and you’re determined to do well, so you tend to not pay too much attention to your male colleague (whose eyes have been on your for the better part of three years). one of your final seminars requires a collaborative project and presentation; you don’t get to pick your parter—you’re simply paired with “ajax.”

as smarmy and irritating as ajax is, he’s intelligent, and you get through your project painlessly. come the day of your presentation, though, all of your slides are messed up. you manage to stumble through and pass, while your partner gets an A for his excellent work. you both chalk this up to a fuck up with technology. even worse is when you get your collaborative essay back a few weeks later. you realize—to your horror—that your sections are all from your rough draft and not your final copy. ajax’s sections are all perfect, however. he was responsible for turning the paper in, and you decide to approach him with “evidence” of his wrong-doing.

how does ajax react? he looks concerned (though the emotion only tugs at his lips and doesn’t quite reach his ocean-deep eyes). he insists that he did nothing to your portion of the paper: how could you think so poorly of me? do i look like i want to fail the class? he convinces you all too well that either you sent him your unpolished copy, or that the submission portal messed up your work. as sure as you were of his guilt when you pulled him aside after class, fuming, you’re now believing the simpler truth—ajax couldn’t have sabotaged you. that would be ridiculous. who would go to such sinister lengths to hurt their peer’s grade and reputation?
