Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Rich guy* who's job it literally is to support the Slayer sees Buffy, effectively a twenty year old single mother, breaking down from a series of untreated psychological traumas and decides to go back to England to teach her self-reliance, forcing her to get a soul-crushing job in fast food on top of saving the world for free every night.

Fans: It's all Willow and Tara's fault for not paying Buffy rent**.

*Seriously, it's never really dwelt on, but Rupert Giles is loaded as fuck. He was unemployed for more than a season and never showed the slightest sign of financial hardship, then bought a new car and his own (apparently profitable) business. He apparently has a home in England and a nice two-story apartment in California, plus a seemingly-bottomless collection full of rare occult manuscripts (canonically described as the best on THIS SIDE OF THE ATLANTIC), antiques, and probably illegal weapons. Oh, and by season six he's once again getting his Watcher's salary, with backpay, THANKS TO BUFFY.

**I'm not sure this is ever actually stated, or just assumed because it's not shown on-screen. But regardless, Buffy's friends risk their lives helping her fight evil every night, as well as taking care of her house and sister while she was dead, AND probably incur an ungodly amount of bills for magical supplies, weapons, damaged clothing, and medical bills for which they are apparently never reimbursed, so this particular financial exchange is very much working out in Buffy's favour, if we want to reduce every relationship and form of contribution to purely monetary terms.

Maybe it is a copout to say the real Big Bad of Buffy season 6 is “life” and the difficulties that come with it, but maybe it’s also just accurate

And maybe particularly so when talking about young adult difficulties and the pain of not being a kid anymore. The Summers’ finances. The group’s collective father figure leaving so his little birds can fly. Relationship troubles to the extreme. You love them but marriage terrifies you because you’ll inevitably turn into your parents. You love them but couldn’t possibly bring yourself to admit it. You love them but you can’t watch as they destroy themselves in addiction. You love them and you say screw it, let’s be together, but death comes knocking. Looking after a teenager and caring for her financially, emotionally, in all the ways when you’re just 20 yourself. Addiction itself. The Big Bad is an annoying group of not so innocuous nerds until they’re more than annoying until the real Big Bad is grief personified. Grief, mourning so much being the season’s through line. Mourning the person you used to be and mourning childhood and mourning the person you used to love but don’t really know anymore and mourning the future you’ll never have.

Idk. I know it’s a heavy and often weird season but it’s BtVS’ best for me because it’s just so human.

The way they NERF Willow, wtf even is the Buffy and Spike on and off again BS, And don't even get me STARTED on my girl Tara. And Dawn's character had so much potential for them to do nothing with her.

it drives me insane when people say season six is bad because it’s too much about real world problems and the early years weren’t like that. seasons 1-3 are about buffy struggling with wanting to be a normal girl with a successful high school career and a boyfriend who’s good to her and a parent who understands her. that’s as “real world problems” as it gets when you’re sixteen. it’s just kid problems.

pretending the high school years weren’t about buffy struggling with real life as well as monsters manages to invalidate the unique experiences of both teenagers and adults.

the only difference is in s6 buffy is smacked with the reality that now shes an adult, she has to do these things on her own (because giles can force her to and she isn’t guaranteed a legal guardian) and if it gets fucked up the consequences are much more long term and devastating. she can be over not being crowded homecoming queen even though that was very upsetting at the time, because now she has to grapple with maybe losing her house and custody of her sister if she can’t pay bills and that will affect her deeply and forever.

that’s by design. that’s growing up. life was always the big bad. life just isn’t that big when you’re a teenager.
