Anya is such a funny character like. She was a monster of the week villain who ended up human instead of dead. Cool. That's fine. She shows up again to try and get her powers back. Ok. I kinda thought they'd send her to the alternate universe at the end of that episode? But no she's still here. And then she just keeps coming back. Like girl what are you still doing here. I love you

SO I love Sacha Dhawan as the Master, he’s absolutely perfect in the role, and this post is NOT a criticism of him in any way. I’m certain Michele Gomez was fantastic too because she’s great (I ducked out early in Joss Wedon’s tenure as showrunner and missed her Master).
That said, there’s something deeply frustrating to me about the fact that when writers wanted to give the Master a redemption arc they made them into a white woman (and called her MISSY instead of MASTER how fucking condescending can you get Moffat???) and when writers decided to make them evil again suddenly they are a brown man. Especially a brown man set as an antagonist against a white woman.
There’s just. So many intersecting strands of racism and patronizing, “benign” sexism going on there, fuck. Even if they’re completely accidental it’s such a bad look.
Sacha Dhawan is really really fucking good though and I’m glad he’s the Master. In most respects I’m also glad that Chibnall is ignoring most elements of the Moffat run because the Moffat run was some absolute bullshit, but the abrupt shift from uhhh ~sneaky, mean but nobly self-sacrificing white woman~ to ~unhinged, mass murdering, Nazi-abetting brown man~ is a bad bad bad look and should have been thought through. And yes I understand that there’s interesting, canon-changing backstory stuff going on but from a metatextual level holy shit man you could have written this better. With a little thought you could still have had the cool reveal on the plane and a credible threat for the episode and even a little attempted murder while maintaining (or reestablishing by the end of episode) the Master’s sympathetic side.

Me, every day: don't be mean, talk about things you like. You don't have to hate on celebrities. They're people too!
Me, after reading how everyone loved Justice League besides the sexualized parts:
I fucking hate joss wedon.

I feel there is a better way of addressing America's colonial past than having the main character of a TV show defeat Indigenous people's ghosts as a monster of the week. Like writers can try and make the most nuanced or sympathetic story but there's still going to be the visual of native people being killed. Can we fucking not.

How did joss wedon make a worse episode of TV than Bugs. Like I thought Supernatural was bad about Native American history but Buffy s4e8 is somehow worse.
