PK/WL is great not only because it's canon, but because it implies a lot of cute stuff about them. PK before Hallownest was the bug equivalent of a kaiju, and we also know that he is not what you would call a people person, so he probably just roamed the world as a nomad wyrm. Probably lived a more leisurely life too: if someone was causing him problems he could either eat them, roll over them or just go away. 3 easy solutions to most of his problems.

The fact that he ended up married says that he gave all of that away because of his wife. When he decided to stay with the White Lady, he also decided to leave his old body and bachelor lifestyle, lol. Also, when we take into account that they are both immortal beings, it means that they willingly committed to each other for all eternity so they obviously love, respect and trust each other. I see that a lot of people see him as cold and feelingless, but I dunno, he changed a lot just to be with his wife.

With Lurien, it's basically all headcanons, lol. Basically, they met when lurien got (along with other bugs) a job as an advisor or something similar at the White Palace, and Lurien became one of the few that PK actually listened to for advice. This remained the same for some years, totes professional relationship without any romantic interest (yet...). They do become sorta friends, Lurien was the guy that PK tasked to do important stuff that he didn't have time to do because he knew that Lurien would do a good job, so PK ended up talking with him more than most other bugs.

When the City of Tears started to need more direct supervision, he ordered the spire to be built and Lurien became the City Watcher. PK got some extra time to work on other projects now that he didn't have to manage the city, Lurien became the most important mortal bug in Hallownest and got the power to generate real change in the hallownestian society and the common bugs got a new governor that as a mortal, better represented them. Big win for everybody.

The only problem is that they now lived in different places and they started to miss each other friendship. When Lurien started his new job as a watcher, they just communicated through reports and letters. PK missed his friend (probably would not admit it tho), so he started to make excuses to create meetings with him. "I got to review your work", "I've got to check on the city" yeah, right. PK even believed his own excuses.

Over the course of the years, the respect and care towards each other just grew naturally, they got similar personalities but were different enough to make it interesting. Anyways, those professional work meetings slowly became friend visits and eventually, they just started dating without really putting too much attention to it, like, it became common for PK to go visit Lurien at his spire and have a private dinner with him. Later on, they did notice that they had become more than just friends, but to vocalize "hey, we are dating now, right" was not that easy for them, lol. And yeah, they eventually did start dating for realsies.

WL is totally ok with them btw, (an eternal commitment like the one between her and PK needs to have certain perks to work properly), so when she noticed how much her husband cared for Lurien, she wasn't gonna interfere with them and honestly, she probably helped them get together lol.

You were bored, just slouching in bed late at night waiting for something to happen. Since quarantine hit, you really haven’t been able to see your friends, well not without a screen. You’ve been keeping up with your closest friends, Connie, Sasha, and Armin, and playing Minecraft with them when you don’t have (or don’t do) your schoolwork. You’ve been missing actually hanging out with them though.

So you decided to group message them about it, see if they wanted to go do something, taking safety precautions of course. Turns out Sasha’s mom wouldn’t let her go anywhere because she was worried for her, and Connie was staying with family out of state. But Armin could come.

You moved to private messages to talk to Armin about it, so you don’t spam the group chat or make Sasha and Connie jealous.

“Hey, are you free on Friday?” you asked.

You quickly saw him typing back to you, “Sorry, no, but I can do something on Wednesday or Thursday.”

You sat up a bit, “Alright, either one works for me.” You had that equivalent of awkward silence between texts where neither of you know what to say. “Which one do you prefer?”

He responds after a moment of thinking. “Wednesday’s fine. What do you wanna do?”

You thought it over for a moment, not actually expecting to get this far. “I know that ice cream shop down the road’s open. We could get some ice cream and head down to the beach for a while and just screw around if you want.”

“Sure. Which ice cream shop again?” He questioned. Armin lived not too far from you and had been over a couple times.

“That one we pass when you come over. Taking a right from my house it’s on that corner, a few shops down from the gas station.”

“Oh that one! Ok.” He responded.

“Did you get your bike fixed?” You asked. You all had bikes and would go places on them before the whole virus thing happened. Thing is, Connie crashed into Armin after hitting a pothole and totaled his front spokes.

“Yeah, it’s all ready to go. Do you have a cooler?”

“I know there’s one somewhere in the garage that I can find and clean out.”

“Alright, I’ll see you Wednesday?”

“Definitely.”

You were excited to see at least one of your close friends during the pandemic. You set your alarm for tomorrow, which was Monday. You only had to wait until Wednesday to see him.

Wednesday rolled around soon enough and you had just finished the last of today’s schoolwork. You packed up a backpack with some extra snacks, water, and some bandages in case either of you fall.

You texted Armin “Hey, where do you wanna meet?”

“I can just meet you at the ice cream place if you want.”

“You sure? That's kinda far from where you are.”

“I’ll be fine, it's not terribly far.”

“Alright, well I’ll see you there.”

“Cya,” he signed off.

You put your phone in your backpack, before dusting off that old cooler, filling it with ice, and putting it in your bike basket. You set out for the shop feeling good. You haven’t been outside in a while, and feeling the wind against your skin felt perfect.

You went down the road a ways, pulling up into the shop’s parking lot. You pulled your bike over and leaned it against the curb with the kickstand, and waited for Armin.

About 10 minutes later, the blond comes into view, pulling into the lot, spotting you, and heading over. You look up at him, pulling your mask up as he does the same. He wipes his brow as he’s hauling his bike over. “Hey, how are you?” he asks, looking down and putting his kickstand to the curb.

Your smile, “Good, how about you?” In all honesty you were great now that he’s here. You haven’t seen him in person for around 11 months and you’ve missed him.

He looked back up at you and you could tell he was smiling even under his mask.

“I’m fine, happy to be outside,” he sighed.

“Hey, your hair’s a little longer,” you pointed out.

He blushed a tiny bit, “I’ve only gotten it cut once during this and now since everything’s reopening, my mother’s scared to take me to get it cut again. The only reason she let me come on this trip was because it’s contactless.”

“I see, well either way it looks cute,” you reassured him.

He let out a small laugh, “Thanks.”

“Anyways,” you say, going up to the front of the building, “what flavor do you want?” You put some gloves on before reaching for your wallet.

“I’ll just have the cookie dough.” Armin pulls out his phone to pay that way.

“Hey, I can pay for both of us if you want,” you say, looking over at Armin.

“It’s fine, I have my own money,” he politely declines.

“Don’t worry about it, it’s my pleasure,” you say, taking money out of your wallet, enough for the two of you. “What size do you want?”

He puts his phone back into his pocket, looking up at the size chart. “I’ll just have a medium.” You nod and go up to tell the person at the counter your orders. A few minutes later, your orders are in the window. You hand the cashier the money, then take off your gloves and grab your ice creams. You put the bowls in Tupperware and then in the cooler.

“You ready to go?” You ask Armin. He nods, clicking his helmet back into place and getting on his bike. You get back on your bike too and the both of you head out.

It’s another 10 minutes before you get to the beach. It isn’t the best weather for this kind of visit. It’s overcast and a little bit foggy, but it’s still a nice place to hang out.

The both of you lock your bikes up and take your ice cream out of the cooler. You hand Armin his dessert and open your own.

“Wish the weather was better,” you commented, looking up at the grey sky.

“Well if the sky’s not clear, that means less people will come,” Armin points out, looking over at you. You nod and look around for a spot to sit down. “We could go over there,” Armin suggests. He’s pointing at a couple boulders decently spaced apart up on the hill away form everything.

“Ok,” you say. You both start going over. There’s no one else at the beach besides a few random people chilling at the shoreline. Armin hops up on the boulder to the right and you get on the left one.

“Thanks for paying for this,” Armin sheepishly says, taking a bite.

“It’s no problem, I’m happy to,” you say. God, you wish you could hug him. Quarantine’s been horrible to your social interaction, plus you may have an inkling of attraction to him. Even to just hold his hand would be ethereal. But you can’t. You need to stay safe, and you don’t know if he feels the same about you.

“So, um, how’s your week been so far?” He inquires.

“It’s been okay. Hating school as usual, but besides that I’ve had a good time keeping up with you all,” you say.

He takes another bite before speaking, “If you want, I could help you out with your work if you’re having trouble.” This wasn’t the first time he offered, but you felt like too much for agreeing last time.

“I’ll think about it, I’m managing alright for now though. How about you? How’s quarantine been treating you?” You ask him.

“I’ve been able to keep up with things for the most part, but it does get tiring. It’s good to finally get out of the house again.” You nod and both of you just sit there for a moment, eating and looking out at the ocean. You couldn’t see that far out because of the fog, but what you could see was nice.

The waves slowly crashed against the sand and rocks while you heard gulls above you. You cherished this moment, as simple as it is. Even if your feelings were unmatched, he was still your best friend. You get butterflies whenever he’s around. He makes you happy and anxious in the best ways possible.

Armin looks up before taking out his phone. “Looks like it’s supposed to rain in a bit.”

“That’s a bummer, I wish we could stay out here longer,” you say.

“We can always come back. I’m still free tomorrow.” You perked up at his suggestion.

“Same, we can do that,” you quickly reply. He nods his head in agreement.

“Same time?”

“Sure.” You both went back to eating for a moment. “We should  do this more. This is fun.”

“I do quite like this. It’s relaxing to take a break every now and then,” he says.

The two of you keep talking, about home, friends, hobbies, school, etc, when you felt a raindrop on your cheek. You look over at Armin, who looks up at the rain.

“Guess it’s time to go,” he says, slightly frowning. You stand up, getting the trash from your ice cream and start walking over to the trash can. It’s under one of those buildings that look like metal car awnings, but with benches and the board that shows the directory and rules of the beach. Armin follows suit.

“We really should have checked the weather,” you say, disposing of your trash, “I don’t feel comfortable with either of us biking in the rain on the road like this.”

Armin throws his trash away, “We’ll be okay, it’s not a whole lot,” he says. “Besides, you can call someone if you don’t feel comfortable.”

You sit down on a bench, looking on your phone. “Looks like it’s not supposed to stay for too long. We could just stay here for a while if you’re okay with it.” He sits down next to you and nods. He looks between you two and sees the small gap.

“Sorry,” he says as he moves further away.

“Hey, it’s okay,” you say. You want to tell him how you feel, you really do, but if he doesn’t feel the same, you’re afraid things won’t go back to normal.

You start to say his name at the same time he speaks, which causes you to both chuckle. “You go first,” he says.

“Go ahead, I’ve already forgotten what I was saying.”

“That quickly?” he smiles.

“Apparently.”

“Well I- I don’t know how to put this properly, but…”

“But what?”

“I want to do this more often, and I know you already said that but I really miss hanging out with you.” He looks over at you, waiting for your reaction.

“I miss you too,” you say. You felt your cheeks darken as your face warmed up. You look over at him, he was just the same as you. That gave you the confidence you needed. “I really like you, Armin.”

He looks up at you suddenly, “You mean like, more than friends?” he asks you nervously.

“Yeah. More than friends. I have for a while but I just haven’t said anything.” You look away until he says something, not wanting to face him as he’s making up his mind, but he answers almost immediately.

“I do too! I- I mean I just didn’t say anything because I wasn’t sure if you felt the same.” You felt your breath hitch in your throat, wanting to say something, but you just didn’t have the right words.

“Well, um, we should definitely do this more often then,” you finally say, giving him a smile.

“Do you uh, want to hold hands?” he asks shyly.

“Should we?”

“It’ll be fine as long as we wash our hands when we get home.” You nodded and stuck out your hand. He took it as he moved a bit closer to you.

You two just sat there for a moment, taking everything in. The rain, each other, the sounds coming from the road. Even though it seemed so new, it felt good. It felt right. Armin started speaking again, talking about how he’s been thinking of this moment for a long time. You smiled and continued the conversation for a decent half hour, still clasping hands.

You finally heard the rain let up and the sun began to shine through the clouds.

“You want to go down to the shore for a bit now?” You asked him.

“Of course,” he said. You got up, taking him by the hand down the hill.

Whumpee laid curled up on their bed. The large duvet created almost a cloud of content around them, and they found themself in a really good mood.

A notification for friend request on an account they didn’t recognize popped up along the top of their phone.

Well that wasn’t too surprising. Whumpee had a couple popular accounts, and their username remained the same for most of their socials, so it wasn’t uncommon for them to get a follow or request from a stranger.

Clicking accept, then on the account, it revealed photos and videos of a pretty popular person on the app, who looked to be the same age as Whumpee.

It was almost ten minutes later when they got the request for a DM, same person who friended them.

‘Hi :)’, it read.

‘Hello :)’, Whumpee responded, making sure to add the smile at the end. ‘How are you?’

The read receipt popped up, and the indication that they were typing.

‘Good, just lying in bed. :) How about you?’

Whumpee grinned at the message. ‘Same mate. Just feels like one of those days, you know?’

‘Yeah, definitely.’

The conversation went on for a bit longer, the two of them just messaging back and forth about their day, or whatever seemed relevant at the moment.

‘I just think it’s a fun outfit, kind of suits you Whumpee.’

Whumpee was about to respond, but then they stopped. How the hell did this person know their name? They didn’t have it on any of their accounts.

‘Haha yeah, though i have a bit of a question- how did you get my name?’

‘?’

‘I don’t have it put in any of my bio’s or anything, I was just curious.’ They sat up in their bed, keeping the blankets pulled around their shoulders.

‘Ohhh- yeah sorry, I was actually recommended to check out your account by a follower of mine. They told me your name, so I just assumed it was common knowledge. Did you want me to not? I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable-‘

Whumpee furrowed their eyebrows. ‘No, you’re fine, I’m just trying to figure out how they got it now.’

‘Do you want me to send you the account? It’s a private btw.’

‘Please.’

‘Alright, one sec.’

Almost half a minute later, the other person sent the link to another account. Whumpee clicked on it, noticing that they had zero followers, and was only following four people.

Requesting to friend, they looked at the following section, a bit surprised to find themself on there.

It was them, the person the were DMing, and two others when, upon whumpee clicking, revealed to also be popular creators around their age. A constant.

The friend request was accepted, and what they saw nearly made Whumpee scream. It was pictures of them, along with the other three that were being followed.

Not just normal pictures however, these were photos through windows of them in the bathroom, in their rooms, houses, out in public, and it was clear, at the angle they were at, that they had no idea these photos were being taken.

Whumpee most certainly had no idea.

They wanted to block the account and call the police, but they realized they would need proof, and to let the other accounts know of the pictures of them.

Screenshots of the account were taken, of the pictures of them, and as much as Whumpee could find to prove enough.

Whumpee went back to the following section, following the other two and requesting to DM as they went to the account who talked to them first, sending all of the screenshots.

‘Holy shit- like, holy fucking shit, what the fuck?’

‘Yeah I know???? I’m trying to add the other two, hold on.’

It felt like hours, painstaking hours before the other two accepted the DMs. Whumpee added them into a group chat with the other person and sent in all the screenshots before anything else.

The person they’d been DMing, who Whumpee got to know as Whumpee B, had quickly filled in the other two on the situation.

Whumpee D responded first. ‘What the actual fuck? This has to be a sick prank or something’

Whumpee C: ‘I think I’m gonna be sick’

D: ‘I’m calling the police, I think you guys should too’

B: ‘Whumpee, you should block them.’

D: Yeah

‘Doing that now.’

They went to the account, when they saw the newest update from seconds ago. Their blood ran cold.

It was a picture of them in their current position, taken from a crack in the door that they didn’t realize was open.

They hadn’t gotten the chance to close out of the post before it swung open.

Some random fluff things

I should really finish my homework and go to bed somewhat earlier than I usually do, I have a final plus an FRQ tomorrow one after the other

But I mean

Homework and sleep got nothing on fluff headcanon stuff for ships so here's a disorganized mess of fluff. It's also only for two ships so-

Roman x Emile x Logan (Rolomile)

Plus Patton, Damien(Deceit), and Virgil as their kiddos, and a side Rem^2!

Logan's originally a single dad to a boy named Patton, and Emile and Roman are already married with their two sons Damien and Virgil. They meet Logan when they were called in one day cause Virgil got into a fight at school defending his friend Andy, and once they were home and reassured Virgil they weren't mad Roman and Emile had a long and private discussion about this teacher cause he was so cute and calm and captured their hearts almost immediately

So they ask Virgil about him(Virgil's like, 11 at this point btw) and Vee ain't an idiot, he's the best crush finder out of all the sixth graders, and immediately calls them out and just tell his dads "if you both like him ask him out!"

And so they do, and it ends up going very well! The three go out for coffee, letting the boys stay at Logan's friend's house(Thomas's house). They run into Remus and his boyfriend Remy who somehow knew Logan and they all just sorta hang out

Logan's very confused about how these two married men that obviously love each other so much and are happy with where there family is find him interesting, and he's a bit unsure when it comes to entering a romantic relationship with them. More long talks ensue

Patton also encourages his Papa to date Roman and Emile, the five year old claiming "he'd love to have three papas!" and how excited he'd be if there was more love to go around. As well as excitement over seeing Virgil and Damien more often

Logan does eventually get romantically involved with them and lemme tell you, Roman and Emile used to pride themselves on not ever getting flustered

That pride was thrown out the damn window, Logan makes them flustered with his light laugh and the way he can go on and on about a subject and turn the most boring thing into the most interesting

Logan's also really cuddly and touchy, often playing with their hands or hair, hugging them from behind or placing kisses all over their faces

He nearly gave Emile a heart attack when Emile stumbled in on Logan singing Virgil, Dee, and Patton a lullaby

Roman had originally proposed to Emile. Emile proposes to Logan this time, making sure it's absolutely perfect for their nerd

They all take turns as to who sleeps in the middle each night

Logan reads to them until they fall asleep if they're having a rough day

Emile and Logan talk a lot about psychology and mental health. Damien was really excited to continue learning about that kinda thing, especially cause once he gets older his psychology and health teacher isn't all that great

Roman and Logan are both very competitive and have created the following games : who could fluster Em the most, which one could put the boys to sleep faster(Emile triumphed without even playing), who knew the most musicals or films in x genre, first to clean the most dishes, the best baker(Patton and Dee crushed them with this, and now neither Roman or Logan is allowed to ever cook unless Emile is supervising), and who will last longer for a no blushing game when Emile rambled adorably about whatever new thing he found super interesting

Oh yeah and Roman's a painter cause I said so and he'll often make paintings of his boyfriends. There's a lot of paintings of Logan and Emile out somewhere with a pretty backdrop.

Remus is a photographer in this and has definitely taken many photos of his brother and his husbands whenever asked cause it means he can bring Remy to a really nice date spot too

Remus is very protective over Virgil, and will fight anyone and anything that hurts Virgil

Virgil is very clingy in the mornings, not that Remus is complaining when Virgil's holding him tightly and refusing to let him out of bed

They write together, it was initially a thing Remus did by himself as a suggestion from Logan and then Virgil tried it to help relax and it worked. They've done multiple collaborative short stories, and they both write a Logicality fic together on a shared account on Tumblr

Remus often asks Virgil if he's doing alright whenever things start to get heated, constantly checking if what they were doing was fine and reminding Virgil it was okay to say no. Virgil really appreciates this

Sometimes they need to take breaks so they have a thing where they spend the day away from one another and do their own thing, they end up with some wild stories in the end

Remus is actually a really good cook, especially when it comes to Virgil's favorite things. He really loves making homemade pizza for them

Remus will hum Virgil to sleep

The others are very surprised when they find out they're dating

And nearly gave heart attacks once they find out that Virgil and Remus aren't actually dating, but are engaged

Virgil tells Remus he loves him every single day, any chance he gets. But he's always sure to say it before they go to sleep and just after waking up

So, About That Pac-Man Championship Edition Demake...

My current fave game is a Famicom/NES iteration of one of an all-time fave titles for the Xbox 360: Pac-Man Championship Edition. Which was recently released as a bonus title of sorts, for the recently released Namcot Collection.

But the video above is not said game. Or is it?

Said video was published in 2017. Three years ago? Alas its uploader provides zero precious info; when someone in the comments asked where the rom came from, the answer was just...

"Idk"

And when asked if said uploader still has it, the response was simply...

"not anymore"

It's worth noting that I saw the video above courtesy of @gosokkyu, who states...

"...that "8-bit demake" of Pac-Man Championship Edition may very well be based on an old Japanese homebrew, similar to Sega's acquisition of the fan-made Darius port for the Mega Drive Mini"

A few days later, Siliconera (side note: who out there remembers my days as their East Coast Editor?) published an interview with Naoki Horii, from M2, which (not surprisingly) is responsible for Namcot Collection. Though the focus was, of course, "Pac-Man Championship Edition (FC Arrange Version)" and the following is perhaps the most interesting part...

"... we originally negotiated to port the game to Nintendo 3DS, and afterwards, we’ve been working on this for around nearly five years."

Wait, so is the M2's version and the one seen above not the same thing, as in from totally different parties? Anyone who has played the one that just came out for the Switch can tell you that it's somewhat different than what you see in the video, or should I say hear... the audio in the retail release is more polished... but otherwise they're VERY similar.

But then along comes @blizzardjesus, who shared this second video, which appears to be the same version as seen above... except it's eleven years old?

I then decided to go back to the previous YouTube video's comments section and take a closer look. These two, from the same person, really stood out...

"Nobody has the rom/patch because the creator, Coke774, never released it, just the footage. He did some minor patches found over at romhacking but not a lot. I suspect it wasn't released for legal reasons."

And...

"... it is what it is. This was never released so unfortunately, for now, all we have is footage like this. Maybe one day it will get released but Coke774, for some reason, isn't releasing it yet. https://togetter.com/li/743867 - you can see there they made a homebrew cartridge of it for themselves."

That link compiles various social media content into a blog post-like container. Included is various Niconico videos, including one for Coke774's "Nintendo version Pac-Man CE (Port without permission)". Alas, it's no longer viewable, but check this out; a cartridge version, of sorts, was produced via the usage of Kirby's Adventure...

The photo above was shared by someone else on Twitter, @mucom88, back in 2014, which again proves that this other Pac-Man CE demake existed before M2 began working on theirs. Maybe?

Now, not to get off track here, but something else by Coke774 that caught my eye was "Famicom version Gradius (AC conversion)". Sorry, but I’m simply a massive Gradius fanboy; again, it's associated Niconico footage is long gone, but, footage does exist... via Coke774's YouTube channel!

It too saw a "physical release", and the following was again taken by @mucom88 in 2014...

Fellow Import Club member @joe_keiser, who unearthed Coke774′s YouTube account, observed: "Notably pac man CE is not on his channel". Interesting! 

So the original question stands: was M2's Pac-Man CE demake made completely separately, and it just so happens to coincidentally to be VERY similar to a homebrew project? There's enough evidence of Coke774's handiwork that makes me believe that his version wasn't faked... so I'm assuming that he was simply hired by M2?

Yet, as evidenced by the fact that there’s a “2019″ in the title of that last video, it would appear that he still does stuff on the side? Hey, did he by chance work on the hidden arcade version of Gradius for the PC Engine Mini? Even more questions!

UPDATE #1: I just realized that the link with all the compiled tweets and Niconico footage no longer works! Yet it was up, only just a few hours ago… again, interesting!

UPDATE #2: I initially thought that now dead link was non-functional due to a mistake on my end. Which is not the case (though it’s still VERY odd how it all of sudden all the contents JUST disappeared), yet I decided to check everything else, just cuz.

Well, I just came across another Twitter thread from @gosokkyu once again, which in addition to side-by-side comparisons, also has the following discovery… 

"I did a quick search and dude pulled his old webpage and privated all his Pacman CE videos towards the end of last year"(!!!)

Another addition to my Villain!Izuku AU. For Villain Month day 11. The prompt is redemption, but I think I used the prompt very liberally... BTW this is the second time I’ve posted this section, I wasn’t able to format the original correctly, and my computer complained every time I tried to edit it to add links.

Izuku had noticed a certain casino with an unusual security system. He’d suspected that it had some less-than-legal activities going on behind closed doors, but didn’t consider the implications of that until it was too late.

A couple of days before they planned to rob the casino, Toga had stealthily extracted blood from a random businessman. It was just a small syringe, small enough that the target wouldn’t notice what the girl who bumped into him was doing, but large enough to get the blood Toga would need for 2 hours of transformation.

Now, Toga was walking towards the seedy casino disguised as the businessman, pretending that she was stressed and wanted to gamble.

“Just got my paycheck, now all I need is to play the odds and I’ll get enough to retire!” She gruffly told the man in line behind her.

“I thought I told her to stay inconspicuous,” Izuku said even though there was no way for Toga to hear him. “We don't want them to notice anything is different, and we definitely don’t want them paying attention to her.”

“She’ll be fine,” Uraraka insisted. “Toga’s used to this kind of stuff.”

“I know, I know.” Izuku said. “Just remind me to get her some inconspicuous communication device for her to wear so I can give her instructions when she’s on missions like this.”

Dabi raised his eyebrows. “You mean like a cell phone? We’re already using that.”

He was right. The audio Izuku was currently hearing came from Toga’s phone, which she had called Izuku with before they started. Izuku’s phone was currently on mute.

“I mean like an earpiece,” Izuku explained. “I may make one hidden as an earring, but I’d prefer one that was either invisible or flesh-colored.”

Around that time, Toga wandered into the casino and started to scope out the place. Izuku had told her to find the security room, where all the security and bank information would be. There wasn’t a door directly in the back, but there was a side door that wasn’t as well decorated as the other doors, so she decided to start with that one.

The door opened to stairs leading down. Toga followed the stairs to the bottom, where she saw a crowd of people surrounding a large metal cage. She couldn’t see what was going on, but there were a lot of growling sounds. To the side, she saw several dogs packed into too-small cages, covered in matted fur, flees, and blood.

Poor puppies. They look so cute covered in blood, but they also look miserable, Toga thought. I’ll ask Izuku if I could release them as a distraction.

On the other side of the room, she saw another door. None of the patrons where passing through it, but she did see a security guard use a keycard to open it.

Bingo.

Near a side wall, Toga found a broom closet. She grabbed one of the brooms and went to linger in the shadows on one side. After a few minutes, another security guard came her way.

As soon as he’d passed her, Toga hit him on the head with the broom handle. Swiftly, she caught the unconscious guard and dragged him into the broom closet, shutting the door behind her.

It was a cramped, dark space, but at least it was private.

She pulled out her phone to give Izuku and update. “I’ve knocked out one of the security guards. I’ll take some of his blood and his security card, which should let me in the back room.”

On his end, Izuku turned off mute. “Good job. Find some way to clear out the room, then put us on speaker.”

“I will,” She confirmed.

Toga emptied the contents of her fake-clothes pockets, including a trusty pocket knife. She used the knife to make a small cut in the guard’s arm. Several drops of blood decorated the cut, and she was quick to lap them up.

A few moments later, Toga left the broom closet, now looking like a security guard in this place. She easily slipped the security card in the slot and opened the door to a room filled with computers.

Two other security guards were watching monitors in the room. Well, no big deal.

Toga pretended to be relieved. “I’m so glad I found you guys! The boss is upstairs, he wants to speak to you.”

The two others looked up with wide eyes. “Overhall is here?” one asked.

Toga had no idea who that was, but nodded anyway.

The other security guard stood up. “Come on Kaname, I’ll show you to the private rooms. I only hope that he’s in a forgiving mood.”

Once the two had left the room, Toga sat down at one of the monitors and pulled out her phone.

“Okay Izuku, you’re on speaker,” she said after putting it on speaker.

“Good. Put the flashdrive I gave you in any of the desktops. If there are multiple computers there, you may have to try several, but I’ll be able to check each of them individually.”

Toga took the flashdrive out and did as she was asked. Shortly afterwards, the mouse on her monitor started moving on its own, bypassing passwords and opening programs all over the place.

Izuku’s tech skills are really great, Toga thought.

Eventually, Izuku spoke through the phone once again. “Okay, I’ve found the accounts. Let me just transfer the money, shouldn’t take more than a minute. By the way, do you know anything about these “kennels” that have cameras?”

“Oh, that must be for the doggies being kept here. That reminds me, can I try to free them as a distraction before I get away?”

“Did you say that there are dogs being kept there?” Uraraka asked. “Why would they…”

“They were all covered in blood, but looked really miserable. Can I, Izuku?” Toga asked again.

“Dogfighting,” Izuku said. He sounded like he was seething, something she’d only seen him do around Shigaraki before. “That’s what they’re doing behind closed doors. Don’t worry Toga, we’ll help the dogs escape. I think I can unlock their cages from here.”

“Yay!” Toga said. She spun around in her chair, which led to her eyes catching something on the floor in the corner of the room. “Hey guys? I think I found a safe.”

“What kind of safe is it?” Izuku asked.

Toga walked over to the safe and kneeled down. “Just a standard turning dial. Should I try to open it?”

“Leave it. We don’t know the combination, and I don’t want you to make noise trying to break it.”

Toga looked at a little slip of yellow she saw on the side of the safe. “There’s a sticky note here with the number 5, 15, 25 on it.”

“...In that case, go ahead and try it.”

Toga tried it. The safe opened.

“Well, there’s a few stacks of cash in here, as well as a gun with amo. Want me to take it all?”

“Wow, yeah, please do.”

Toga grabbed an empty briefcase from the floor and started shoving the money in it. “You got it, Izuku.”

“Good. Okay, the money has finished transferring. I’m going to open the kennels in a moment. Get the flashdrive, get out quickly, and take the long way to our hideout. Got it?”

Toga closed the briefcase, stood up, and grabbed her phone. “Got it.”

Outside the door, she could hear the clang of metal, followed by loud barks and screams. She pulled out the flashdrive and calmly power-walked out of the casino. When she passed the broom closet, she stealthily dropped the access card so her victim could find it later.

She got away scot-free, or so they thought.

The next day, Izuku pulled out the new gun and ammo Toga had brought back. He wanted to sit on their new funds for a couple of days, but Toga had demanded a present for completing the job, so he gave her some cash to go shopping. Spinner had decided to join her and get some fresh air. Dabi had gone out to find another place they could make their hideout, since Izuku didn’t want to stay in someplace that All For One technically owned any longer than necessary. The only people still in the hideout were Uraraka and Izuku.

Izuku studied the gun. It was very similar to what he was used to: semi-automatic pistol with 12 in the clip and 1 in the chamber. The bullet size wasn’t the 9mm he used with his usual gun, so he’d have to keep a couple on hand to compare when he restocked. Still, there were enough in the box that once he’d loaded the clip half the box was still left.

He pushed the clip in and made sure the safety was on before walking away with the gun. “Uraraka, I’m going to shoot in the basement,” he shouted to the only other person in the house.

Uraraka looked up from the computer she’d been watching videos on. “Oh, okay. Want me to come with you?”

Izuku shook his head. “It’ll be loud, and all I’m doing is shooting at tin cans. Not the most interesting training, to be honest.”

Uraraka shrugged. “If you say so.”

Izuku descended the steps to the basement. He wasn’t sure why this particular warehouse had a basement, especially one this big, but he was grateful for it. The basement stretched out far beyond the boundaries of the building and probably even several blocks, giving Izuku a long concrete tunnel that suited him just fine as a shooting gallery.

He’d already set up makeshift targets from old tin cans about 10 feet from the entrance, so all he had to do was aim and shoot.

Bang!

The first bullet missed, significantly to the right of the target. Izuku was about to shoot another round, but he noticed some discoloration on the ground where the bullet hit.

He walked up to the target. The trajectory of the bullet was marked by a deep read, similar to blood. The bullet had traveled quite a distance, but it wasn’t hard for Izuku to find it on the ground several feet from the target. The bullet had split along the sides and squished on impact, opening up like a metallic flower.

Along the splits, Izuku found a thick, red liquid.

It it is blood, Toga will be able to tell.

Izuku decided to store the bullet in a plastic bag so Toga could look at it later. He was walking up the stairs to store it when he heard a loud noise from upstairs.

Izuku ran up to see what was going on.

Two men were standing in the entranceway, having thrown the front door off its hinges. They were both wearing plague masks. One was a large wall of muscles with long white hair. The other had black hair, but didn’t look particularly imposing. Izuku knew enough about the world of villains to know the smaller man was probably the greater threat, especially with his air of superiority.

Uraraka was standing in front of the unexpected guests. “What do you think you’re doing?” she demanded. “Who do you think you are?”

The smaller man spoke first. “I am Overhaul, the leader of the Eight Precepts of Death.”

Izuku had heard that name before and laughed. “The Yakuza? Come on, you don’t seriously think anyone is scared of you gangsters anymore!”

Overhaul’s eyes jumped to Izuku and narrowed. “You’re going to regret that. We originally came for retribution and to return the items you stole from our casino, but now you’ve insulted our honor.”

Izuku only rolled his eyes and laughed harder. “You really need to increase your security there, by the way. A sticky note with the lock combination right next to the safe? Really?”

Overhaul turned to his companion. “Kendo, teach him a lesson.”

Kendo, the larger man, nodded. “Sure thing, boss.”

Kendo took off running towards Izuku, but he only took a couple of steps before Uraraka flew towards him and knocked him back. Her air-powered jet shoes shot both her and Kendo into the opposite wall.

Izuku was glad he’d gotten her into the habit of wearing her support equipment all the time, even when resting.

A single hand hold followed by throwing the large man into the air ensured that Uraraka had the upper hand in the fight. It was hard for people with physical quirks to attack with zero gravity.

“Tck,” Overhaul turned to Izuku again. “I’ll just do it myself then.” He then took off running towards Izuku.

Shit, Izuku realized. I have no idea what their quirks are.

He turned and led his attacker to the other side of the room. Overhaul followed, gradually gaining distance. Considering how much Izuku had trained this was rather impressive, but not impressive enough to be his quirk.

When Overhaul was a few seconds from touching Izuku, he snagged Toga’s favorite pillow from a nearby bed and blocked Overhaul’s touch with it.

The pillow scattered into a million fragments, feathers and threads flying everywhere and hindering both fighter’s views. Izuku took the opportunity to jump on top of a table and climb up a shelf just out of Overhaul’s reach.

It’s a good thing he did, since a few seconds later the pillow miracuously came together again.

“Ah, so that’s how your quirk works,” Izuku said. “You’re able to deconstruct and reconstruct things you touch, correct?”

Overhaul glared at Izuku. “Yes, but you should know that’s not my only trick.”

Quick as a flash, Overhaul pulled a gun out of his jacket and fired at Uraraka. Right after impact, she fell.

“URARAKA!”

“Don’t worry, she should recover with time.” Overhaul said.

Izuku didn’t care. He’d forgotten until now, but he was still holding the new gun. Without thinking, he fired it at Overhaul.

It missed the heart by a wide margin, but still hit the Yakuza boss’s side.

Overhaul winced in pain, but surged forward to touch the shelf Izuku was standing on.

Nothing happened.

Overhaul raised his eyebrows. “Oh? So you’re already using those bullets?”

Izuku had no idea what he was talking about, but pretended he did and said, “Yes. They’re very useful.”

Overhaul gave Izuku a calculating gaze.

“Oi! What happened here? Get away from my friends!”

A flash of blue flames shot across the room and forced Overhaul to back away.

Dabi was standing in the destroyed entranceway, looking as effortlessly casual as usual.

Overhaul’s eyes shifted between Izuku, Uraraka (who had started to stand up again), Dabi, and Kendo. He must have realized he’d lost the advantage.

“Kendo, we’re leaving.”

“But Boss, I wanted to rough them up more!” Kendo said.

“You’ll get another chance,” Overhaul said, “But for now, we have more important things to do.”

Izuku couldn’t resist the urge to snort.

Overhaul gave him one last look. “You’re getting away with it now, but don’t you dare consider stealing from the Eight Precepts of Death again. You will regret it.”

He then turned and led Kendo out the door, brushing shoulders with Dabi on the way out.

Once they were out of sight, Izuku climbed down from the shelf.

“I’m gone for a few hours and you guys manage to get in a fight,” Dabi said. “Seriously, who were those thugs?”

“The Eight Precepts of Death, the Yakuza organization that owned the casino from yesterday,” Izuku explained.

Dabi sighed. “Only you could accidentally piss off he Yakuza. I thought those organizations had lost power with the age of quirks?”

“You and me both,” Izuku walked over where Uraraka was clutching her calf. “How bad is it?”

“Not bad, at least, I think.” Uraraka said, biting her lip “It’s just a graze, but something still feels off…” She leaned down and touched her shoes. “My quirk… It’s not getting lighter. I think my quirk stopped working!”

Izuku frowned. That was worrying, but might explain why Overhaul wasn’t able to finish the job after Izuku shot him. If the bullets these Yakuza used were the same as the ones Toga picked up yesterday, then Overhaul must have lost his quirk when Izuku shot him. The fact that Overhaul didn’t seem too worried about this meant that Uraraka was probably going to be okay eventually.

“Come on, let’s get that bandaged up.” Izuku lead her over to the couch. “Dabi, did you find a new place?”

“Yeah, there’s an old house for sale about 10 minutes from here. It’s not in the best shape, but should only cost us about half of what we got from the casino job,” Dabi explained. “I guess you want to move sooner rather than later?”

“Yes. I’ll move the money through a couple of dummy accounts to make sure they can’t trace it, but we should be able to buy the new place by this evening.” Izuku said, pulling out some bandages to wrap up Uraraka’s leg.

“Well, you should make sure they can’t track us there with whatever they used to find us here,” Dabi said. He noticed the box of bullets on the table. “Hey, are those from yesterday?”

Izuku looked at what Dabi was talking about. “Yes. I was trying out the gun this morning, but I’m starting to think there’s something special about those bullets.”

Dabi emptied the box onto the table. Bullets rolled around the table and fell on the floor, but Dabi was only interested in the empty box.

He shoved the empty bullet box under Izuku’s nose. “Doesn’t that look like an electronic tracker?”

A small red light was blinking at the bottom of the box. There wasn’t much encasing it, but it should be enough for a little circuitry.

Izuku scowled. “You’re right. Do me a favor and destroy it?”

A puff of blue flames later and it was done.

Izuku had planned a while ago on meeting with a local support gear supplier to refill Uraraka’s air canisters, order more syringes for Toga, and get more bullets for himself. However, the morning after they moved hideouts he didn’t start the meeting with any of those requests.

Instead, he slapped a wad of cash on the table. “I’ll give you all this right now if you can tell me the location of the Eight Precepts of Death’s headquarters.

The supplier raised an eyebrow, but was more than happy to provide that information.

“You know, all this sneaking around is more of Toga’s thing,” Dagi said. “Why didn’t we bring her?”

“She wanted to look after Uraraka,” Izuku reminded him. “Besides, we shouldn’t need her quirk for this.”

About a week after the confrontation with Overhaul in the old warehouse, Uraraka had gotten her quirk back but still wasn’t in fighting shape. Izuku would never say how relieved he was when she made her blanket float by accident, but getting shot in the leg would put her out of condition for a while longer. Toga had felt so guilty for not checking for trackers when she brought stuff home, so she’d gone above and beyond to make Uraraka’s recovery as comfortable as possible.

Izuku, though, had thrown himself into getting revenge on the Eight Precepts of Death and Overhaul. A few innocent questions to the local small-time villains and Izuku had gathered plenty of information on both the major members and their business practices. Apparently they were trying to dominate the underground again using drugs that enhanced and removed quirks, and held a monopoly on both quirk enhancers and the quirk-erasing bullets.

To be honest, it kind of reminded Izuku of how All For One had maintained a stranglehold on villain society for so many years by taking and giving quirks as he saw fit. Izuku knew how much power that could potentially bring, and wanted to make sure the Yakuza couldn't keep it.

Or, better yet, he wanted to take it for himself.

That was why Dabi, Spinner, and Izuku were here now, sneaking into the Eight Precepts of Death’s compound. Toga had given all three of them training on hiding their presence, so they should be able to slip in undetected and destroy the supply of drugs and special bullets. Hopefully they'd get some critical manufacturing equipment as well. Even better, Izuku was hoping to take pictures of their bullet-making process so he could reverse-engineer it.

Spinner, who had been crawling on the ceiling until now, dropped down in front of Izuku and Dabi. “There’s a door to the left,” he whispered.

Izuku nodded. “Let’s check it out.”

Just around the corner where spinner had said, Izuku found a closed door. It wasn’t locked. He opened it, but what he saw made him stop in his tracks.

It was a little girl’s room. Izuku had expected to find a stockpile of weapons, drugs, or the labs they’d use to make those things. Instead, he saw a rainbow painting, dolls strewn all over the floor, and a pink bed.

On the bed, a little girl with a horn looked at Izuku with fear in her eyes.

“A-are you… Is he…” The girl was trembling, but tried to voice her question. “Does he need to unmake and remake me again?”

Unmake and remake? Izuku wondered. That sounds like Overhaul’s quirk...

Suddenly, what she was saying clicked in Izuku’s mind.

“Dabi, Spinner, go on ahead. Take pictures of anything you think I’d be interested in, and destroy any stockpiles you can find.” He said.

Izuku heard the two of them leave, but didn’t take his eyes off the girl. He walked slowly towards her, holding out his hand.

“Don’t worry, I’m not with Overhaul,” he said. “My name’s Izuku, what’s yours?”

The girl looked at his hand wearily and didn’t move. Eventually, her quiet voice said, “I’m Eri.”

Izuku gave her a comforting smile. “Hello Eri. Do you mind if I sit next to you?”

Eri did not respond, so Izuku went ahead and sat on the bed.

“Does Overhaul unmake and remake you a lot?” he asked.

Eri looked down at her hands, but eventually nodded.

“I’m sorry to hear that. I’m sure it must be painful.” Izuku reached a comforting hand out and gave her a one-armed hug.

Surprisingly, Eri didn’t flinch. She actually started to lean into his arm some more.

“Do you want to leave here?”

Eri looked up at Izuku in surprise. “I.. Can I leave?”

Izuku gave her a comforting smile. “If you want, I can take you away from here. There’s already five people in one house so it might not be as comfortable as you’re used to, but at least Overhaul won’t hurt you anymore.”

Eri clutched his hand, holding onto it with more strength than he thought her small body could muster. Her eyes were wide with hope. “Please, please, please! I don’t want to be unmade anymore!” She was on the edge of sobbing.

Izuku held her close, shushing her. Looking at Eri, he couldn’t help but remember when he was young and All For One had just taken him in. Did he tremble in fear as much as Eri?

No, he probably hadn’t. All For One hadn’t been actively torturing him.

Izuku tightened her arms around Eri and lifted her off the bed. She was so light, Izuku suspected she’d been malnourished.

“Try to be quiet,” he whispered. “I don’t want anyone to notice what I’m doing.”

Eri nodded and put a finger to her lips, the universal symbol for “quiet.”

And so, Izuku walked out of the Eight Precepts of Death’s facility with a little girl in tow, leaving Dabi and Spinner to destroy the drugs and bullets.

For some reason, they weren’t able to find the process to make quirk-destroying bullets.

“Aw, aren’t you the cutest thing!” Uraraka squealed at the sight of Eri.

Dabi, on the other hand, gave Izuku a hard look. “Izuku, why did you have to take her home?”

Izuku rubbed the back of his head sheepishly.

“Aw, Dabi, you’re just jealous that she’s so cute!” Toga said.

“Umm…” Eri fidgeted with her nightgown. “I’m sorry, I don’t want to be a burden…”

“No, no, no you’re not a burden!” Uraraka said. “Dabi’s just being a stick in the mud. By the way, it doesn't look like Izuku brought any of your clothes with you. Would you like to get some new clothes?”

Eri fiddled with her nightgown some more. “If you want.”

“Hm… you can’t go to the store in that nightgown…” Toga considered. “Oh, I��ve got it! Eri, come with me real quick.”

Toga led the tiny girl up the stairs to the bedrooms.

Once the girl was out of earshot, Izuku turned to Dabi. “Overhaul has been using his quirk on her. Regularly destroying her body and putting it back together. I couldn’t leave here there.”

“I see,” Dabi suddenly turned away from Izuku. “Well, there’s also the fact that she’s a kid growing up in the ‘care’ of a villain organization…”

“Dabi!” Uraraka hissed.

Izuku couldn’t figure out what they were implying, but before he could ask Toga returned with Eri.

“Ta-da!” Toga said, showing off Eri dressed in a black t-shirt that was so much bigger than her it worked like a dress.

Izuku recognized the design. “Isn’t that my shirt?”

“Well, you’re not using it right now,” Uraraka said. “Besides, it looks so much better than that ratty nightgown.”

Eri shuffled over to Uraraka, apparently to show off her clothes. Something made her trip and hit Urarak’s hurt leg.

“Ugh!” Uraraka grunted in pain from the impact.

Eri immediately jumped back. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”

“Oh, no, it’s fine sweety,” Uraraka assured her, sitting up from the couch. “It was an accident, after all…”

Uraraka froze. Something was different. She unwrapped the bandages around her leg. The wound was completely gone.

Somehow, Eri’s bump had healed her.

“Wow Eri! You have a healing quirk?” Toga asked.

“N-no, that’s not it.” Eri was trembling again. “It’s dangerous. I ‘rewind’ people, and it can make people completely disappear by accident…”

“Well, that just means you need to learn to control it,” Uraraka said.

Eri was close to tears now. “But I can’t control it. The only person who can control it is Overhaul, when he uses me to cleanse the world of quirks…”

Izuku’s breath caught. Is she saying…?

Swiftly, Izuku kneeled down so he was eye level with her. “Eri, your quirk is your power, nobody else’s. Overhaul won’t touch you again, and I know you’ll figure out how to control it with time.”

“But… But what if I hurt someone?” Eri asked.

“We’ll be careful, and I’ll help you get a handle on it. Okay?” Izuku said, patting her on the head.

Eri still looked concerned, but didn’t protest.

“Hey Uraraka, since you’re doing better, how about you take Eri and Toga shopping? She needs clothes, after all.” Izuku said.

“Right! That’s a wonderful idea,” Uraraka said, bolting up off the couch. “Come on you two!”

“Yay! It's a girls-only outing!” Toga cheered, taking Eri’s hand and following Uraraka out the door.

With the girls gone, Dabi and Spinner went to their rooms to catch up on sleep. Izuku though, grabbed a particular gun and the corresponding bullets and walked down to the old hideout where his shooting gallery was still set up.

One by one, Izuku emptied clip after clip of the quirk-erasing bullets. They destroyed the cans and stained the whole place red, but Izuku just kept shooting until the last bullet made from a little girl’s suffering had been spent.

This was his redemption.

The next day, the Mustafu police force received an anonymous tip about the source of illegal quirk enhancing and erasing drugs. They forwarded this information to the Nighteye agency, where All Might’s successor was still interning. This prompted a raid on the Eight Precepts of Death’s facility, where the hero LeMillion defeated the villain Overhaul.

The public at large didn’t think too much of this, but Mirio and Sir Nighteye both thought it was too convenient, especially since none of the Yakuza and tried to use their quirk-erasing bullets. They asked to interrogate Overhaul about this, and the police granted their request.

“Someone took the child. My guess is that green-haired kid with a smart mouth, but I can’t say for sure,” Overhaul said in response to questioning.

"The child?" Mirio asked.

"What green-haired kid?" Nighteye asked instead.

Overhaul scratched the side of his face. "The girl is none of your concern, but if you must know she's the Boss's granddaughter. Now for the green-haired kid, he's apparently the leader of a new small-time group of villains. I don't know his name, and I wouldn't have even concerned myself with him if he hadn't stolen some quirk-erasing bullets from me. He didn't even seem to realize what he'd done, but still made himself a nuisance."

"You still haven't explained what this has to do with your lack of resources," Nighteye pressed.

Mirio want to ask about the girl again, but let his mentor take the lead.

"A few days ago someone broke into our facility and destroyed our entire stash of bullets and drugs. They burned them and scattered the ashes so even I couldn’t reonstruct them. They also took the only source I had for the quirk-erasing bullets. I investigated, and found out that some green-haired boy had been asking about our operations. His description matched someone I’d recently caught stealing from our legitimate businesses, so I planned to track him and his gang down, but you showed up first.”

“You say this boys took your source for the quirk-erasing bullets. Is it possible he’ll try to create his own?” Nighteye asked.

“I doubt it. But if he does, well, that’s your problem isn’t it?” Overhaul responded.

“Would you be willing to tell us what you know about the green-haired boy and his gang?” Mirio asked, “If nothing else, so we can save the girl.”

Overhaul gave Mirio a calculating stare for a few moments. “I’ve only seen three of them. As they walked through the walls of Tartarus, Mirio turned to Nighteye. “Did you get enough information?”

“Not even close. Overhaul is definitely hiding something,” Nighteye pulled out his phone and started texting his sidekicks. “There’s a good chance we’ll learn more if we can find that green-haired kid and figure out if he really did destroy the stash and steal the source of those bullets.”

“And the girl?” Mirio asked.

“Again, we need to find the green-haired kid before we can judge.” Nighteye suddenly stopped, a look of shock on his face. “Mirio, did you notice how Overhaul started talking about the girl but quickly changed to talking about the source of the bullets?”

Mirio's heart sunk. “You think that’s because they’re the same thing?”

Nighteye started walking faster. “I don’t know for sure, but we have to find that green-haired boy.”

Unfortunately, the Nighteye Agency’s investigation on this matter proved fruitless for about a month. The most they got were a few rumors about a kid collecting support gear, but they never led anywhere.

Summary: Elliot who suffers from weekly crying attacks finds comfort by chatting with a girl called Y/N that he met online. They have a real mutual understanding and grow close. If Elliot had to name one thing that he hated the most, it would be his loneliness.

He hated it whenever the silence overfilled his apartment, making him aware of the missing. He hated the overwhelming sadness that attacked his body, forcing him to curl up into a weeping ball and let it all out. He hated his own fucking blubbering; it was pathetic.  And he hated the fact that his morphine was out. 

Elliot squeezed the empty plastic can in his hand and threw it against the wall. „Fuck!“, he spat and pulled at his hair in frustration, walking in circles. Tonight was far worse than usual - his whole mind was intoxicated by the mixture of every single negative thought he had collected over the years, and this damn mental cocktail was hard to swallow. 

He needed something else to numb the pain, to turn his overheated system into sleep mode. What Elliot needed was a backup plan, a good one and preferentially in the next few seconds.

Flipper’s sudden barking made him slightly jump and Elliot stared at the little dog. She always did this during his crying sessions, probably because she sensed his anxiety. But the longer Elliot stared at the big round black eyes it seemed they fixed something behind him, so he turned and sighed. The computer.

„Of course…“ Elliot sat down and furiously tipped on the keyboard, bringing the monitor to life. Its harsh light illuminated his puffy face and the rest of the dimmed room. 

One klick and the browser opened, Elliot typed swiftly and the white page turned into his surrender: the blue version of his morphine - the most popular social media platform. He created an account, logged in and began searching. Looking for someone to write to, getting off his mind for the moment, exchanging nonsense and feeling normal for once. He went to ‚public groups‘ and thought about a topic, something that his future dialog partner would share with him; a common interest was essential for a fluent conversation. Elliot knew that, but only theoretical.  It was a group called Best movies of all time where he read Y/N’s comment about The Nightcrawler, discussing the two faces of society with three other members and without thinking twice his hands had already started a private conversation.

Elliot A., 12:43  What are your favorite movies?

He brought one hand to his mouth and bit at his knuckles impatiently. Shit, he was so desperate that he forgot a ‚Hey‘ or ‚How are you‘. She probably won’t answer him. One minute had passed and the loneliness was still there. Elliot moved the cursor to close the conversation, eager to find someone else, when a noise accompanied the new message he got.

Y/N, 12:45  I will tell you after a proper greeting.

Elliot A., 12:45  Hey.

He hesitated and typed more.

Elliot A., 12:45  Hey. I’m sorry.

God, why did he have to be that awkward? But nevertheless, he got an answer again.

Y/N, 12:46  Hey, don’t be. I was just messing with you ;-) I do like thriller movies like Shutter Island, Split and Hick. What about you?

Elliot felt his tensed shoulders relax as his eyes roamed over the letters. 

Elliot A., 12:46  Sounds interesting. I like any kind of movie as long as it’s good.

Y/N, 12:46  Haha, and what is ‚good‘?

Elliot A., 12:46  Back to the future is pretty good.

Y/N, 12:47  Yeah, I’ve seen it. So you like the sci-fi genre or just the imagination of traveling through time?

Elliot A., 12:47  Don’t we all wish to do that somehow?

Y/N, 12:47  In order to escape reality, yes. 

Elliot leaned closer to the monitor. He felt a weird sensation, as if somebody had put a cozy blanket over his back and rubbed the soft fabric on his skin while whispering I understand you. Did Y/N understand him?

Elliot A., 12:47  Do you wish to escape reality sometimes?

His heart pounded wildly in his chest as he awaited her answer. Elliot was so nervous that he didn’t register his burning eyes due to not blinking. His body however forced him to do so and after his eyes were set back to the monitor he had a new message.

Y/N, 12:48  Yes.

Her answer was short, but it revealed so much more. Elliot, intrigued by Y/N, clicked on her picture to visit her profile. It was set private, so he just stared at her smiling face. She looked so happy and open-minded, her messy bun had lost some strains of hair that framed her blushed cheeks. What story hid beneath those sparkling eyes? What made her wish to escape reality? Elliot’s fingers began to tingle, they always did before he hacked a person. He felt the urge to open her sealed book, reading the missing lines that would complete her story, the beginning and the ripped out pages - he wanted to know everything - every misery and every secret. 

The familiar annoying noise of another message interrupted his thoughts.

Y/N, 12:49  I don’t want to seem weird or anything, considering we chatted for only 5 minutes, but I’m glad you texted me, Elliot. 

Every word became more blurry as Elliot’s eyes teared up. He ran his hand over his face and took a deep breath. Her honesty unwrapped his true intention, so gently and careful not to rip the thin paper that covers his vulnerability. 

Elliot A., 12:49  I am the weird one. I know it must sound pathetic, but I needed someone to talk to.

Y/N, 12:49  Then you’re not alone. I need someone to talk as well. Idk why, but it’s so much easier with a stranger than a friend.

There it was. He read the sentence over and over like a mantra. You’re not alone. You’re not alone. You’re not alone. And then, the loneliness was gone. Elliot, who went to therapy for over two years now, started to understand Krista’s words. His therapist always urged him to tell his thoughts instead of bottling it all up inside. Now, the relief was overwhelming as the lid was removed, the inner pressure left his body in pleasant small waves. 

Elliot A., 12:49  I understand you. 

Y/N, 12:50  :-) Btw, I guess you’re a man? You have a unisex name, my sister’s name is Elliot as well. 

Elliot A., 12:50  You’re right. How do you know?

He had no profile picture and no information given to the site besides his name. Of course Elliot had used a fake e-mail account during the registration process. The internet was not trustworthy. 

Y/N, 12:50  The way you write gives it away. Or maybe I just traveled through time and got a glimpse of you.

She tried to lighten up the mood and Elliot appreciated it. His lips twitched into a quick smile before he typed his answer.

Elliot A., 12:51  I take option two. So how do I look?

It took a while for Y/N to answer, so he went over to Flipper’s bowl to fill it with fresh water. The little dog wagged its tail happily while drinking. The roll chair creaked when Elliot sat back to read her text.

Y/N, 12:55  You have bright eyes, blue or green, I couldn’t tell in the short time and you have natural curly hair, brunette and not too short. You wear glasses and a knitted oversized sweater with cats on it.

Elliot A., 12:56  I almost believed you. 

Y/N, 12:56  Was worth the try and hey, I don’t judge.

Elliot A., 12:56  I’m more a dog person.

And so Elliot told Y/N the story of how he got Flipper, of course leaving out the hacking part, and they continued writing about this and that. He learned that she was addicted to coffee and long hot baths; that she enjoyed going to the cinema and secretly danced at home to 80’s music. Y/N on the other hand found out that Elliot worked for a cybersecurity company and that he had a sister as well. When Y/N excused herself for a moment, Elliot checked the time. It was 2:28 am and for the first time during this day he was calm. The anxiety had crawled back into the back door of his mind and Elliot won’t open it for the rest of the night. He decided to end the chat and go to sleep, work awaited him in 4.5 hours.

Elliot A., 02:28  I’ll go to bed now. It was nice talking to you, Y/N. 

Y/N, 02:29  Alright. Good night, Elliot. Keep the systems clean :-)

Elliot A., 02:29  I will.

Y/N, 02:29  See you soon.

That conversation took place on a Sunday night, and since then the two of them would chat every time Elliot suffered from his loneliness. He could go for a week, completely fine by himself, enduring the lack of human interactions in his life, just to break down within the safety of his apartment. But Elliot had his personal backup plan - Y/N. They wrote about nonsense and meaningful things, about deep emotions and opinions. She was the anchor when his anxiety washed over him like a giant wave, she would keep him on the surface and Elliot stopped panicking.

The routine was set like a clock:  Crying and writing to Y/N. One week past. Crying and writing to Y/N. One week past. Crying again and writing to Y/N.

It worked. She became an important part in Elliot’s life and so it was only natural for him to hack her. He had lasted two days before he gave in and followed his nature. Private messages with friends and family, bank and e-mail accounts, online-shopping activities and social media profiles were not safe from Elliot’s endless thirst for knowledge. He was more than glad to find out that she told him the truth. Then, something caught his attention in her browser’s history, a specific search.

Y/N had tried to find him. Elliot leaned back in his chair and kept his eyes locked to his name. It was understandable, her wish to put a face to the person she spend hours and hours writing to. Elliot got it, but he still felt uneasy about the imagination showing her his face.  Their relationship would reach a new level of intimacy. He wouldn’t be a screen to her anymore, but a real human. A human she could meet in real life.

„Elliot?“ Krista’s soft voice addressed him, causing him to snap out of his thoughts.  Today was Thursday and Elliot sat on the large couch of his therapist’s office. She titled her head a little. „You are quieter than usual. What are you thinking about?“ Elliot refused to meet her eyes and instead looked down at his fumbling hands. He hadn’t told Krista about Y/N until now.

„I’ve met someone…“ Elliot could see from the corner of his eyes how the woman’s head lifted up, eyebrows raised. He got her full attention. „That’s great, Elliot. Tell me about him, her.“ „Her name is Y/N… We are writing a lot“, he said slowly and his face softened. It was the first time he said her name out loud and he liked the way it left his lips. Krista noticed the change of Elliot’s mimic and smiled in satisfaction. Seeing her patient like that really warmed her heart.

„So you haven’t met Y/N so far?“ Elliot’s head twitched slightly and he turned towards the window. „Elliot?“ „I’m afraid of showing her my face. What if she’ll be disappointed?“, he spoke quietly and Krista watched him swallowing hard, fighting against the upcoming tears.

„What if I won’t match her expectations? We live in a world where looks and status rule. Swiping left because the nose is too big or the eyes are too narrowed, the first impression is always crucial for a relationship.“ Elliot began to shake as the anger built up, his eyes darting across the room before he finally locked gazes with his therapist. Krista raised her hand and motioned him to calm down. He took a deep breath and clenched his hands. 

„You are talking about relationships. Do you feel something for Y/N and are afraid of her possible rejection?“ Elliot shrugged his shoulder and kept his eyes down. „But Elliot, she must be special if you write so much with her. Do you really believe that she’s superficial and will abandon you?“ Krista was right. Y/N wasn’t like the others, she was willing to write to a complete stranger who’s face she hadn’t seen. She had trusted him and what did Elliot do? Hacking and accusing her for being a hypocrite. 

„No…“, he mumbled and Krista nodded. „I know I tell you this every time, but real human interactions are important for you, Elliot.“

Y/N, 10:13  Hey, how are you? 

Elliot frowned at Y/N’s message. It had been three days since his last crying session and she was never the one who approached him first. Y/N always waited for him to start the conversation, because she probably knew not to push him.

Elliot A., 10:14  Hey, is everything okay?

She didn’t answer right away and it fed Elliot’s worry. He tipped his fingers against the wooden desk and his nervous tick made Flipper bark in response. „Sorry“, he said to the dog and finally he heard the noise of a new message.

Y/N, 10:17  I’m sorry it’s just… I feel so alone right now. My shithead of boyfriend broke up with me and I’m not sad about it, just really mad. I knew that he cheated on me and I planed on breaking up, it’s just that he accused me of destroying the relationship… He blamed me for everything and it’s just so frustrating.

Guilt laid heavily on Elliot’s shoulder as he recalled today’s therapy session. He also had blamed his anxiety on her and Elliot regretted it. He also regretted hacking her and therefore feeling the lack of surprise. He had read the chats of Y/N and her boyfriend, hacked his profiles and found out about his dirty secret named Samantha. Judging by the texts, he had cheated on Y/N for 1.5 years and Elliot was often tempted to blow his cover.

But he didn’t, because Y/N knew it. She wrote with her sister about his cheating and how she was going to break up with him. Or using her words ‚beating his ass up‘.

Elliot A., 10:18  Don’t be sorry. I would feel the same. He is more than a shithead if he gives up on such a smart and funny woman.

He hoped that his words eased her pain a little. God, he was so bad at this. How did Y/N just managed to safe him every time he was close to falling apart? He saw her typing, but then she paused a moment before she continued.

Y/N, 10:20  Thank you, Elliot. 

She was holding back something, he felt it.

Elliot A., 10:20  You can tell me anything, Y/N. Don’t hide.

Elliot scoffed at his own text. Don’t hide. He should be the last person telling her to not hide. But his words actually reached her and Elliot’s heart stopped beating when he saw her plead.

Y/N, 10:22  I just wish you could hold me in your arms. I’m sorry if it’s weird, but I trust you so much and I know you probably want to keep it this way and maybe it’s just because of my emotions, but I want to know you more.

Elliot could visualize her crying face - eyes red and cheeks glistening from her salty tears. She must be so desperate if she asked him for the one thing she knew he avoided all the time. Elliot’s backup plan was a real human with real emotions and a beating heart. Y/N had saved him so many times, so wasn’t it his turn to return the favor? His hands ghosted over the keyboards, waiting for his brain’s order. He wet his dry lips as he tipped his message to her.

Elliot A., 10:24  We can meet tomorrow if that’s okay.

Here’s where I stand with the whole Travel Agency storyline. 

Tom would’ve had serious medical bills from being in the ER. Higher than some can imagine. Bills don’t die when people do. Liz was in a coma. This left Red or Scottie to take care of them. Either way, one would have to expect Scottie went to the hospital to take care of those charges because she wouldn’t be checking Liz’s mail on the regular. Red wouldn’t have that, and Scottie runs Halcyon.  

Red in charge of Liz’s mail. The bills start to come. After all, Liz was in a coma for ten months. Tom with his numerous aliases. Aliases that he unpacked when they moved into that apartment and he spoke of their new beginning. Those aliases get paid as they work. If he’s working against Red, he’s not using his Tom Keen identity to do it. He wouldn’t have Red or Liz trace that back to him. Ressler’s deleted scene from S2, talking about Tom being in trouble and he’s gonna bring that trouble to her. Next thing you know, Red got shot. Yeah ... Ressler putting a flag on all of Tom’s aliases, stated in-episode. 

The Travel Agency wife learned of her husband through his private account. So yes, I consider it heavily. Peter hiring Tom to help put that bullet in Red’s chest. A transaction that would show on his bank statement for that alias. He needs his passports. You want me gone, give me my passports and you’ll never see me again. After all, I’m gonna buy a boat. Clearly not able to get to any other cash. He’s picking pockets. He apparently doesn’t have a go-box at this point because he doesn’t think. Red is always ready. Gone in less than 60 seconds. So yeah ... Peter’s transaction that assisted Tom in buying his boat. Doesn’t matter if Liz goes with him or not, he can’t stay. Why? Because Peter conned him, then told him he had to leave. He wouldn’t want Tom around for what he was about to do to Liz. Peter couldn’t take the risk of him trying to save her like he did during the Harbormaster trial. That makes sense. 

Then you have Dr. Krilov’s memory manipulation. He’s gonna want some kind of down payment if he’s taking a trip to the US. No way would he waste his time. Even Kaplan knew well enough to buy him lunch and strike a deal in Vienna. Insert the photo of Krilov and Kate having lunch. After all, Liz did warn him that she was headed to Vienna. Tom doesn’t have that option. He doesn’t have the time. Red survived, and Liz learned of his involvement. Understanding that Red getting shot was part of the plan to frame Liz. You take out her #1 protector, then you take her out. You leave Red alive, you’re risking the same as you would in allowing Tom to stay - only worse. Red is quite powerful, and he doesn’t give a damn who you are. Liz learning Tom was involved in part of their plan to frame her, she’d want to kill him as much as Red would in learning Tom helped put the bullet in his chest. Tom couldn’t have that. Dr. Krilov in your bank statement. 

And you can keep going. If these aliases were the ones Red spoke about from back in Milton Bobbit’s episode, they may very well go as far back as Fokin’s murder. Bank records can go back as far as 7 years. Some, maybe even longer, depending on the branch and their service. If S2 took place in 2015, which I believe it did, then his bank statements could go as far back as 2008. Goodie. Now, imagine Constantin Rostov having hired Tom to locate and return the woman he believed to be his daughter. More financial transactions. After all, Tom and Liz didn’t meet until July of 2010. If the aliases Red spoke about in Milton Bobbit, would likely only cover as far back as the Fokin murder. Either way, until his death, these aliases could be on file within the banking system, having recorded every transaction for that alias. This could very well cover the reason Red reentered Liz’s life, since he turned himself into the FBI in 2013. Krilov, Peter, Fokin, Gina, even Jolene’s bar tab. Perhaps Constantin, perhaps Tom’s bachelor party, perhaps when he claimed he was heading to a job interview. Name whatever you like, it’d be in their system. 

Tom was a man of many truths. One of the first things Red said to Liz after she woke from her coma and returned home from the woods. Will you be able to forgive yourself? Forgive yourself after you’ve sought vengeance for Tom’s death?

I take this back to 5x6, head to 1x7, shoot to S6, then end up back at the pilot. 

Eleanor: You can’t imagine how angry and afraid I was to find out that the man that I loved, the father of my children, was a monster.

As I’m thinking, that private account the Travel Agency wife found could very well have been for one of her husband’s aliases.

Liz and Tom still considering adoption, only now - she has Agnes. The box that contained Tom’s passports. Aliases that I believe got paid. And, btw, back to the Takoma Park house. As I suspect, Agnes’ hit will parallel that tragedy. Will she be able to forgive herself now?

I’d have to disagree.

I can guarantee Liz didn’t learn everything. Tom’s statement before the Red Wedding confirms that. Liz doesn’t know the story behind Gina Zanetakos. 

Disappointment. Impaled by a unicorn. And if you think Red can’t track Tom’s bank records because he’s neither Tom or Liz, don’t be silly. Red is .... Red.

thoughts about being 29 on the internet that i just had in the shower...

...and had to write down. they were all basically just about how f**king - NEW. and surreal. the internet, its capabilities, and its fandoms can still be to me sometimes. i feel like i forget this a lot. but when i think about it, i can easily recall my wonder at discovering that it all existed in waves of smaller finds. and because i know there are others like me, i thought i’d share some of my own experiences. because honestly, i’ve had fewer years on tumblr and sites like it than some people much younger than me. i’m catching up and enjoying it.

firstly, i know i’m old to some of you, but i’m not really old. not really. i’m still a millennial, screwed over by student loans and old white men and viewed as part of the technological generation. i’m a phd student, and because i’m always on a college campus, i’ve been mistaken as a freshman. a few times. but it’s been fascinating to witness actual freshman and other college students and consider just how different things are for them and honestly? i’m sort of jealous. 

because...

i can remember when i first discovered that fanfiction existed. i was in third period tech skills as a junior in high school - 16 years old - and got a little off-topic and searched for spoilers for a new supernatural episode. this was in 2005 and the show had just come out (yes i still watch, i can’t escape).

and what did i find? somehow? fanfiction.net. i was, no exaggeration, shocked. i sat and read a full-length chaptered fic in episodic format. my mouth was hanging open. i saw thousands more fics in hundreds of fandoms and suddenly felt less strange for envisioning full-scale episode re-imaginings in my head as i laid in bed, dissatisfied with what i had just watched. (btw, i watched new supernatural episodes the sunday after they used to originally air on the wb on thursdays, at my mom’s house where i had my own room and own tiny tv, because no one at my dad’s house wanted to watch and streaming episodes wasn’t something i could even imagine. plus i didn’t have internet at my dad’s house. i know.)

not only that, but i was impressed as hell. here was me, not even aware that you could somehow upload your own text to the internet, and people were not simply writing polished stories in private but posting them somewhere that allowed for chapters. that allowed for people all over the world to read their words. that categorized everything into a huge virtual library. and, most incredibly to me, that allowed for reviews from people around the world.

i couldn’t believe that this new world was open to me. that people would be so generous as to offer amazing stories to me to read FOR FREE. that i had a limitless supply of content to read and review. i barely had functioning internet at home, so i had been sheltered. i told the people sitting next to me in class about it and encouraged them to check it out, mostly to blank stares. i may have even told the teacher, but no one cared. i didn’t understand. who wouldn’t be interested? i told my dad and my sister about it when i got home from school. i was mind-blown.

months in and many reads and written reviews later, i wrote my first fic. it was for smallville. 6 chapters, with updates every few days, that received 14 reviews in total. i read them all multiple times. i showed my sister. i checked the story stats every half hour. i cried. i wrote on the family computer secretly in the evening when most of my family had gone upstairs, because i was about half a year away from owning my first laptop. i wrote more stories sporadically for about 6 years, gradually getting better, but also gradually becoming more stressed and aware of negativity, online arguments, and the embarrassment and shame i suddenly felt about having an online presence. i found a supernatural forum at tv.com (the forums sadly no longer exist), learned about fandom, and immersed myself in posting and being part of a community that i thought understood me more than my friends. like a secret life.

during my first year of college, in 2007, i was in a friend’s dorm when he asked everyone if we wanted to watch an episode of scrubs. i laughed. surely he was joking. “how can we just watch an episode? it’s not on now and you don’t have the dvds.” i literally didn’t consider that there may have been a way. he excitedly told us that he had found some website that had episodes just... pre-uploaded. and that you could just click. i didn’t believe him. the stress of having to be at the tv at a certain time each week for fear of missing an episode entirely and forever was just part of being a fan, right? buying the tv guide and checking listings was necessary. but he found the episode. and clicked. it only took a few full minutes to load and there it was. again, i was astounded. this memory is so shockingly clear to me. it changed how i spent much of my free time, for one. just that moment.

sometime during this first year of college, i was home for break and came across a video on youtube, this new website i had started to use. it reminded me of ebaum’s world, which my friend would show me at her house sometimes because her computer was faster than mine. it was called “cat soup”, and by two guys that called themselves smosh. it had more views than i could comprehend - probably not much more than 5 digits, but still. they were just two kids i could have gone to school with who could create a funny video and get famous. again, i was shocked. mind-blown.

i showed my sister, my mom, and all my friends. they appreciated it a bit more than the fanfiction, but no one seemed to grasp how incredible and revolutionary it was. they all liked “shoes”, with the kelly persona by liam kyle sullivan (we still quote it today), probably because its budget and effects made it a bit more familiarly professional and it appeared less homemade (though it definitely was). but i couldn’t forget smosh. i was so impressed by them. i watched more videos and eventually found communitychannel and jenna marbles and eviliguana and shane dawson. i even found fan edits for my faves, buffy (maybe i saw one of phil’s, lol) and supernatural and smallville, and tried making my own. i freaked in 2009 or so when fred reached a million subscribers. a million. i couldn’t wrap my head around that. again, i told my sister and friends, expecting them to see the enormity of something so crazy happening, and they just... didn’t.

back in 2008, after watching “stick it” again, i recalled the name of a gymnast my cousin used to always talk about when we were kids - from the 1996 olympics - and looked her up on youtube. i realized that all gymnastics competitions imaginable had been uploaded. again - not to be repetitive - but i was shocked. there’s no better word. i gave myself a thorough education on the sport, traveling through time. i am still so grateful that i was able to do that.

sometime in 2009, my friends started pestering me to create a facebook account. i was a junior in college. 20 years old already. it sounded weird - pictures of me online? why? but i gave into pressure and made one. my mom had never allowed us to make a myspace; we were a bit young, and she hated the idea (now, she’s on facebook more than i am). around the same time i got my fanciest phone yet - an LG Env3. i figured out that it could access the internet and that i could use songs to create ringtones. again, sufficiently mind-blown. considering my first cell phone had been a flip phone with no camera that i shared with my sister during emergencies when i was 13, i felt that technology was coming along fast. 

smart phones were foreign to me for a long long time, until recently actually. i thought they were unnecessary for quite a while. i don’t even remember what phones i had at the end of college and through grad school, but i’m pretty sure they consisted of a series of cheap pay-as-you-go phones from walmart. in 2013, i went to china for a year to teach. i got a cheap phone there and used it for about 7 months. one day, a friend of mine gave me his old htc smartphone because he was getting a new one. i didn’t know how to use it, but i played one app on repeat before class and snapped some low-quality photos. after that, i almost immediately went to indonesia for another 9 months to teach high school (2014-2015). the htc phone died very quickly, so i used the nokia brick phone given to me by the organization. it was fine. i had never even used my old smartphone to access the internet, aside from wechat, thanks to china’s internet blocks. it wasn’t until i got home, in the summer of 2015, that i finally got an iphone. it was a huge deal and a big learning curve. it was also around this time that i found dan and phil and tumblr. i only got my macbook two years ago and finally think i have some things figured out.

so i may be old in some ways and remember floppy disks and the card catalog and using encyclopedias to write my middle school papers and huge computers with black screens and green text that displayed math problems in elementary school. i may be able to remember the sound of ancient, huge printers that used reams of paper with perforated, tearable strips down each side. i may remember aol red, dial-up, and not being able to connect if someone was on the phone. but i can also remember watching technology evolve in front of me, discovering fandom and the huge world of content and friendship that lay ahead. and when people try to say i’m too old to like dan and phil, i remind them that dan and phil can also remember. we’re the same age. i relate to them and their stories. to phil’s buffy obsession. to dan’s love of smosh. i’ve only had about 10 fully-cognizant years here on the internet, and only a couple in the world of tumblr and iphones and mobile apps. i’m young in those ways. and i look young enough that strangers sometimes think i’m a teenager. 

that’s laughable to me in some ways, because i’ve lived so much since my teen years. so much has happened. but in others, i don’t feel much different. there’s no age where you just feel grown up. that your interests vanish. that things suddenly seem childish and dumb. yes, i cringe about some things i wrote or did back then and i think i’ve matured, but my interests are all still relatively similar and i can finally explore them in ways that i just couldn’t before.

i hope that this has made sense. and i hope that some can relate.

Jumin blamed himself. In his eyes, he was as much as fault as the car that hit you. He should have demanded that you take Driver Kim. He should have insisted that you have multiple bodyguards with you just so they could haul you out of the burning debris before it injured you further and then he wouldn’t have to look at you lying in a hospital bed covered in casts and bandages. It was his fault and he felt like putting his through the pristine walls of the private hospital.

You looked so fragile, so broken, so pale. Your usually bright and glowing skin is dull and pallid, lips cracked and a muted shade of pink, slightly parted from the tube in your throat. Half of him wanted to rip away the equipment, to breathe life back into you himself, kiss you awake like he’d seen in so many soap operas. The idea was appealing, so much so that he had to take a deep breath to steady himself, exhaling the pent-up emotions.

The steady beeping of the machine was driving him insane while, ironically, maintaining what little sanity he had left. The constant shrill beeps were like a metronome, counting in perfect beat with the one in his head, nestled in next to the built-in watch and ruler. He wished he could reach through and rip them all to shreds. For once he wanted to be ignorant, to ignore the worst case scenarios that his mind was planning, to ignore the constant counting of the clock and to ignore the numbers he saw as he calculated every visible thing; the bed sheets hung lower by 3.4mm on one side than on the other and he stood up, busying himself by correcting them, hands lingering over your body, breathing in deeply at the feeling of your warmth radiating through the thin blankets. You were alive. He focused on that and that alone.

It was a few more days before you woke up, your eyes blinking open blearily and you became aware of a warm pressure on your hand. The lights were blinding after being submerged in darkness for so long, like the first glimpse of sunlight at dawn. When the lights no longer burned your eyes, you allowed them to open fully, trying to process the scene around you through blurred vision as best you were able to. You followed your arm to the warmth that held your hand and saw Jumin’s own hand clasped around yours, his head resting on the bed next to your arm, blazer strewn across the chair and shirt rumpled. His usually neat black hair was in disarray, sticking up in tufts that made him look so young.

You made a vague noise, not being able to speak due to the tube in your throat and your throat was hoarse from disuse, the sound paining you. He inhaled sharply as he came to and sat up, a flurry of emotions fluttering across his face before he finally found one and stuck with it; relief.

“MC?” He asked and you smiled gently up at him, body heavy and exhaustion still keeping you in its clutches. “I’m going to call the nurse,” he told you and you nodded, lightly squeezing his hand and his thumb brushed across your knuckles.

The nurse was in the room immediately followed by the doctor. After an hour of checkups and questions, you were deemed stable for the time being, the various tubes still remaining in your body until they could be certain. Various parts of you ached, a bone-deep pain that got worse when you moved; your shoulder was in a sling, leg in a cast. The doctor had said you were lucky to not have sustained more serious injuries and you saw Jumin’s face pale.

“I’m okay,” you told him, reaching over to grasp hold of his hand once more and squeeze it gently. It was this action that seemed to snap him back into reality and he cleared his throat, nodding and offering you a small smile.

“I know, my darling,” he murmured, standing up and pressing a kiss to your knuckles, “it is I who should be comforting you.” You smiled fondly at him and held onto his hand tighter as the doctor continues to check you over, the occasional spark of pain registering despite the painkillers currently in your system.

“I say she’ll be cleared for release in a few days, provided there are no further complications, of course,” the doctor stated and Jumin uttered his thanks, telling the doctor to send the charges to him. With a nod and a promise that they’d check in with you the next day, the doctor left the room, leaving you and Jumin alone once again.

“You should rest, my love, you need your strength,” he told you, running his fingers down your cheek and you smiled softly at him, leaning into his touch, “I will be here when you wake.” With a slow nod, you let your eyes drift shut, dropping off to the feelings of his slender fingers caressing your cheek.

“Ah, Mr. Han.” Jumin’s head raised from where it had slumped against his chest and he winced at the crook in his neck, turning to meet the doctor’s gaze. He hummed in response, eyes flitting back to your still sleeping form to make sure you were still alive and okay. You were and he exhaled, turning his full attention back to the doctor when he began speaking again. “There’s been an issue regarding the payment methods,” the doctor continues and Jumin frowns in confusion.

“An issue?” He asks and the doctor nods, pulling out a file and passing it to Jumin.

“You asked us to bill it to you, but Mrs. Han’s bank account is not linked to yours, and it is firmly stated that nothing in regards to Mrs. Han is to come out of your funds.” Jumin looked over the documents, frowning when he saw the doctor was correct and he wondered if you had chosen that to reassure him that you weren’t after his money. But then, you hadn’t brought it up with him before you the wedding and the only person that expressed concern was his father and—. His train of thought screeched to a stop and his blood boiled.

“Thank you. I will query it,” he uttered through gritted teeth and the doctor nodded at his somewhat curt reply and left the room. Jumin closed his eyes and steadied himself, taking a deep breath, his hand automatically reaching out for yours, the feel of your soft skin against his own calming him drastically. He then pulled out his phone and messaged his father asking to meet him for dinner before calling V. If his suspicions were correct, he was beyond furious with his father.

When Jihyun arrived at the hospital an hour later, Jumin had resorted to pacing across the room, hands running through his hair in frustration and anger, a sense of betrayal setting in. He knew it was irrational, illogical even, he didn’t even know for a fact that his father was the one behind this, but all of his emotional control was lost when it came to you; he would do anything and everything in his power to keep you happy and healthy.

“Jumin,” V regarded worriedly and Jumin jumped slightly, not having noticed his friend under the room. Jumin had explained the bare minimum over the phone, not wanting to discuss too many details when the facts were still up in the air but Jihyun got the gist of it anyways.

“Jihyun, thank you for coming on such short notice,” Jumin responded, fingers tugging at his sleeves and V frowned in concern, “Can you please sit with MC? I have some…business to attend to.”

“Of course. Is there anything else I can do?” V asked and Jumin shook his head, a few locks of his black hair falling in front of his obsidian eyes, fully in disarray from the frantic combing of his hands through it.

“No. It is a private and delicate matter and I do not wish to divulge such things until I am certain of what has happened. Rest assured that you are the first person I will come to if it happens to what I am suspecting.” V nodded at his answer, taking the seat by your bed wordlessly.

“Good luck, Jumin,” V said, voice soft and Jumin gave a curt nod of thanks before walking briskly out of the door and out of the hospital where Driver Kim was waiting.

His father was at his penthouse when he entered, sitting alone on the sofa with a glass of wine in his hands. The sight would usually make him happy, it was a rare sight to see his father visiting him without a new woman on his arms, but today it made him want to throw the bottle of wine at his head.

“Father,” Jumin greeted and Mr. Han smiled at him warmly, standing up to embrace him, something which Jumin returned stiffly.

“To what do I owe this meeting?” He asked and Jumin motioned for him to sit down, pulling out the folder from his bag and flipping through it. He couldn’t believe he was having to do this, he never believed his own father would do something like this, not to the woman he loved.

“Did you force MC to sign a prenuptial?” Jumin asked, not seeing any point in digressing from the point of the meeting, and Chairman Han blinked, taken aback, face flushing slightly and fingers fiddling with the wine glass. Jumin shoved the folder into his hands and e remained silent for a moment and his silence only made Jumin all the more angry, jaw clenching. “It is a simple question, father, did you or did you not?” He repeated and Chairman Han sighed, setting the wine glass down.

“Yes, I did,” before Jumin could cut him off, he forged on, “but it was for your own good. You are constantly telling me that the women I date are after nothing more than my money, my materials, and I did not want my own son to experience the pain and betrayal that comes with that,” he explained and Jumin growled.

“So you’d rather that I feel the pain that comes from being betrayed by my own father?” He snapped and Mr. Han sighed, rubbing his forehead.

“Jumin, you must understand that—”

“No. I do not have to understand, father. I understand perfectly well. I understand that what you tried to do was out of something akin to love, perhaps, but it was wrong and it is hurtful. I cannot believe that you view MC in such a way. You know how much she means to me, you know how much I cherish her with all my being and for you to make her sign something that suggests that neither you nor I trust her hurts me more than you could understand,” He said angrily, not leaving any room for complaints or stuttered explanations.

“Jumin, please. It was for your own good, son.” Jumin scoffed and stood up, crossing the room and standing in front of his father, looming above him.

“I want a copy of it. I want to see what else you made her agree to. This marriage was not arranged, father, it did not have terms, it had no motives other than love and you’ve somehow made it out that it did. Didn’t MC signing the goddamned thing not show you that she is nothing like the women you date?” He said, eyes blazing and Mr. Han stood up, frowning at his son.

“I am still your father, Jumin, and you do not disrespect me in that manner. I will say again that I did it to protect you, to protect everything you’ve built, your legacy, your future.” Jumin closed his eyes and took a deep breath, fists clenched by his side.

“I would gladly give up everything I have for her.” Silence fell in the penthouse and the Chairman sighed, shaking his head.

“I’ll make sure a copy of the prenuptial reaches you,” he promised and Jumin regarded him coldly before turning on his heel and walking towards the door, pausing before he reached it.

“I insist you leave the premises in the next ten minutes or I notify security to remove you.” He shut the door with more force than necessary, ignoring the indignant cry of his name from his father. He took the stairs to the ground floor, not being able to bear the thought of standing still in the elevator.

You were just as he’d left you, eyes shut, fluttering slightly in your sleep, your hair mussed against the pillow. He noted, to his relief, that your face had slightly more colour, it was still pallid, but a hint of a flush was beginning to return to your cheeks. Jihyun was in the chair like he promised he would be, his arms crossed and head resting on his shoulder as he dropped in and out of a light doze.

“Jihyun,” he murmured, careful not to wake him or you if he was fully asleep. His eyes opened, focusing on Jumin and he offered a smile. The smile was short lived when he took in Jumin’s appearance, the stress, and anger written over his face.

“Do you want to talk about it?” V asked and Jumin sighed, nodded, and pulled up a chair.

You awoke just as he finished telling all the details to Jihyun whose own face was equally as shocked and angry as Jumin’s. You heard soft murmurs, the deep baritone of Jumin’s voice and another one that sounded familiar but that you couldn’t quite place through the haze of sleep and painkillers.

“Jumin?” You asked, eyes blinking open and he was by your side in an instant, brushing your hair out of your face and lacing your hands together. You licked your lips and swallowed, trying to dampen your throat. A straw was being pressed against your lips and you took it gratefully, managing a few sips. He helped you into a sitting position and you noticed V next to the bed. You greeted him with a nod and a smile.

“What’s wrong, Jumin?” You asked worriedly after noting his appearance and he shook his head, kneeling next to your bed. Jihyun told you he’d give the both of you some privacy and left, the door gently closing with a soft click behind him.

“Something was brought to my attention regarding our bank accounts,” Jumin told you and you blinked, brain not processing or connecting exactly what he meant and he explained further, “I found out that my father made you sign a prenuptial agreement of some sort.” You paled, shrinking back into the bed and he was immediately reaching for you, pressing kisses over your hand, stroking your cheek.

“It’s okay, my love, I am not mad at you, you’ve done nothing wrong,” he reassured and you relaxed slightly, still letting an apology fall from your lips. He shook his head, pressing his forehead against your arm and breathing in your scent, humming when your other arm managed to reach across and lace in his hair.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you,” you murmured and you felt his eyelashes flutter against your arm, the puff of his warm breath fanning against your arms, “your father told me that it had to be kept between us, that it was none of your business and it was to protect you.” You felt him tense up and did your best to relax him, running your fingers softly through his hair and down your neck. “I just wanted to make sure you were protected, no matter what, that if I did ever do something to betray you, heaven forbids, that it will not cost you.”

“And what if I betrayed you, MC? Or what if something happened to me? You do realise that he separated our accounts completely. We share nothing financially.” You nodded with a sad smile and cupped his face, brushing a thumb across his cheek.

“I know, Jumin, but I don’t care at all for your money. I care about you. If it meant you were happy and protected I would live without a penny to my name,” you explained and he shook his head in frustration, pulling your hand away from his cheek and kiss the back of it.

“If you love me, MC, then you must also know how much I love you, and how I would rather die than to see you in such conditions, to see you struggling and unable to cope. I want the best for you like you do for me. I am privileged enough to have this life but it means nothing if I cannot share it with you,” he explained and you looked up at him through your eyelashes, eyes big and bright with tears.

“I’m sorry,” you repeated again and he looked at you softly, pressing a kiss to your lips carefully. He brushed a hand through your hair before cupping your jaw gently, thumb stroking the bone.

“Please, don’t be. Just allow me to rip up the contract so we can share everything.”

It was only a few weeks after the problems in Africa that Tony was coming to the compound. You had met him a few times and you loved his wit, his humor, his intelligence, but sometimes he gave off a very...cocky and arrogant vibe. But you still loved to be around him.

Steve was watching more footage and coverage of the accident, as was Wanda. He paused his to go check on her while you and Vision stood in the kitchen.

“Vis, you don’t blame Wanda, do you?” you asked suddenly as you played with an apple.

“I know she didn’t mean to hurt anyone with her actions, no,” he responded as Tony walked in with someone.

“Where’s capsicle?” he asked as he looked at you two.

“I will get Captain Rogers for you,” Vision responded.

“Thank you,” Tony noted. “Y/N, this is Secretary of State. Secretary Ross. Mr. Secretary this is y/F/N, our newest recruit.”

You choked on your spit as you realized who was standing in the room. Immediately you stood up straight, adjusted your hair, and shook his hand.

“Pleasure to meet you, sir,” you said.

“And you,” he responded with a grin.

Finally, Steve and Wanda and the rest of the team joined you, taking some of the heat off of you. The Secretary and Tony said they wanted to speak to all of you. You converged in the conference room and Secretary Ross began to talk.

“Five years ago... I had a heart attack. I dropped right in the middle of my backswing. Turned out it was the best round of my life, because after 13 hours of surgery and a triple bypass... I found something 40 years in the Army had never taught me: Perspective. The world owes the Avengers an unpayable debt. You have fought for us... protected us, risked your lives... but while a great many people see you as heroes, there are some... who would prefer the word ‘vigilantes’.”

Natasha asked, “And what word would you use, Mr. Secretary?”

“How about "dangerous"?” he retorted and you automatically blanched. How were you dangerous? You weren’t dangerous. Rumlow. Ultron. Double agents - they were dangerous. Not the Avengers. You were the only hope against the dangers. “What would you call a group of US-based, enhanced individuals... who routinely ignore sovereign borders... and inflict their will wherever they choose and who, frankly, seem unconcerned about what they leave behind?”

Again, your anger flared. You did care. All of you did. How could he say you didn’t seem concerned?

He shuffled through footage on the screen of different accounts where the Avengers had destroyed cities. Until Steve told him to turn it off.

“For the past four years you've operated with unlimited power and no supervision. That's an arrangement the governments of the world can no longer tolerate. But I think we have a solution,” Secretary Ross stated as he placed a thick booklet on the table. “The Sokovia Accords. Approved by 117 countries... it states that the Avengers shall no longer be a private organization. Instead, they'll operate under the supervision of a United Nations panel, only when and if that panel deems it necessary.”

You could feel yourself getting worked up. This was bullshit. Who had the right to just order you all around? The world owed you an unpayable debt yet they wanted to chain all of you and control you? That doesn’t add up. Either they trusted you to save their lives or they didn’t.

After a tense and quiet moment, Steve said, “The Avengers were formed to make the world a safer place. I feel we've done that.”

You nodded in agreement.

Ross demanded, “Tell me, Captain, do you know where Thor and Banner are right now? If I misplaced a couple of 30 megaton nukes... you can bet there'd be consequences.”

“Okay, wait, time out,” you said, holding your hand in the air. “We didn’t ‘misplace’ Thor and Dr. Banner. Thor went home, to Asgard. You get that, right? That Thor doesn’t live here. And the only times he has come here is to help us fight. Dr. Banner? He was out in the middle of nowhere before you all pulled him back in. He lived without any incidents for years, he can do it again. I read the file.”

“Be that as it may, the world no longer sees the Avengers as a team of heroes anymore. But there is a possible solution here. Compromise. Reassurance. That's how the world works. Believe me, this is the middle ground.”

“So, there are contingencies,” Rhodey confirmed.

Secretary Ross answered, “Three days from now, the UN meets in Vienna to ratify the Accords. Talk it over.”

Nat asked, “And if we come to a decision you don't like?”

“Then you retire.”

You sat back and bit your cheek to keep from going off. This was stupid. This was beyond idiotic.

All of you got up to sort your own thoughts, grab water, take a breather, go to the bathroom, then you regrouped in the living space.

Sam and Rhodey had started to talk and they were already getting into a heated debate.

“Secretary Ross has a Congressional Medal of Honor which is one more than you have,” Rhodey noted to Sam.

“So let's say we agree to this thing. How long is it gonna be before they LoJack us like a bunch of common criminals?” Sam asked.

“A 117 countries want to sign this. 117, Sam, and you're just like, ‘No, that's cool. We got it.’”

“Just because the whole world wants us to sign it doesn’t mean we should,” you argued. “Sam’s right. Where does it stop? So they control us, then what? Will we be tagged and numbered? What if they only let those without powers operate, so Vision, Wanda, and I are benched?”

“That’s not what would happen,” Rhodey argued.

“Oh yeah? Bet you thought SHIELD would never get compromised either,” you spat.

Vision suddenly spoke up, “I have an equation.”

Sam sarcastically remarked, “Oh, this will clear it up.”

“In the 8 years since Mr. Stark announced himself as Iron Man, the number of known enhanced persons has grown exponentially. And during the same period, the number of potentially world-ending events has risen at a commensurate rate.”

“Are you saying it's our fault?” Steve questioned, a little bit of defense coming into his voice.

“I'm saying there may be a causality. Our very strength invites challenge. Challenge incites conflict. And conflict... breeds catastrophe. Oversight... Oversight is not an idea that can be dismissed out of hand.”

“Boom,” Rhodey said as if that just put an end to all discussion.

“What?” you challenged. “Vision, I get what you’re saying. I’m not arguing that by us existing it makes anything better. But do you honestly think that if we all retired or if we all were never even born, that we wouldn’t have the same problems? Loki? He would’ve still come to rule Earth. Rumlow would still be an evil dick. So taking us out of the equation or putting chains on us won’t make anything better.”

“Tony. You're being uncharacteristically non-hyperverbal,” Nat noted after your rant.

Steve informed, “It's because he's already made up his mind.”

Tony got up as he said, “Boy, you know me so well. Actually, I'm nursing an electromagnetic headache. That's what's going on, Cap. It's just pain. It's discomfort. Who's putting coffee grounds in the disposal? Am I running a bed and breakfast for a biker gang?” Tony put his phone on the counter and flipped up an image.  “Oh, that's Charles Spencer by the way. He's a great kid. Computer engineering degree, 3.6 GPA. Had a floor level gig at Intel planned for the fall. But first, he wanted to put a few miles on his soul... before he parked it behind a desk. See the world. Maybe be of service. Charlie didn't want to go to Vegas or Fort Lauderdale, which is what I would do. He didn't go to Paris or Amsterdam, which sounds fun. He decided to spend his summer building sustainable housing for the poor. Guess where, Sokovia.” For a moment, everyone was quiet in thought as they listened to him. “He wanted to make a difference, I suppose. I mean, we won't know because we dropped a building on him while we were kicking ass. There's no decision-making process here. We need to be put in check! Whatever form that takes, I'm game. If we can't accept limitations, if we're boundary-less, we're no better than the bad guys.”

Steve said, “Tony, someone dies on your watch, you don't give up.”

“Who said we're giving up?”

“We are if we're not taking responsibility for our actions. This document just shifts the blames.”

“I'm sorry. Steve. That... That is dangerously arrogant,” Rhodey argued

“Arrogant? Arrogant?” you mocked, furious. “How is it arrogant to say that we need to own up for our own shit? If we fuck up, it’s on us. How is stating that the UN takes blame or responsibility any better?”

“Because, Y/N, this is the United Nations we're talking about. It's not the World Security Council, it's not SHIELD, it's not HYDRA.”

“I don’t give a fuck if it’s the Keebler Elves,” you argued. “It’s still people. People that can be corrupt. People that will start war. What if one country needs us and we can’t go because the 116 countries say no? What if one country doesn’t want our help but the other’s think we should go and we walk into a god damn fire fight?”

“Y/N’s right,” Steve said. “It’s run by people and people with agendas and agendas change.”

“That's good. That's why I'm here. When I realized what my weapons were capable of in the wrong hands, I shut it down and stop manufacturing,” Tony added.

“Tony, you chose to do that. If we sign this, we surrender our right to choose. Just like Y/N said. What if this panel sends us somewhere we don't think we should go? What if there is somewhere we need to go, and they don't let us? We may not be perfect, but the safest hands are still our own.”

You nodded to him, proud and happy that he took your side and backed you up.

“If we don't do this now, it's gonna be done to us later. That's the fact. That won't be pretty,” Tony said and you let that sink in. Maybe he was right. Maybe it would be better to go quietly now than it would be later with a fight. But it still didn’t feel right getting strong armed into this.

“You’re saying they’ll come for me,” Wanda said.

“We would protect you,” Vision assured.

Nat concurred, “Maybe Tony's right. If we have one hand on the wheel, we can still steer. If we take it off…”

Sam demanded, “Aren't you the same woman who told the government to kiss her ass a few years ago?”

“I'm just... reading the terrain. We have made some very public mistakes. We need to win their trust back.”

You realized she was right. You knew how this would look to the outside world. That the Avengers didn’t want to be controlled. What are they so afraid of? You could hear and see the headlines now. But what did they know? They weren’t the ones risking their lives. The ones saying “Yes, go ahead and shackle us like criminals”. It wasn’t the whole picture. It wasn’t just about saying no, it was about the fact that you all were losing a right.

“Focus up. I'm sorry, did I just mishear you or did you agree with me?” Tony asked.

“Oh, I want to take it back now,” Nat said, shaking her head.

“No, no, no. You can't retract it. Thank you. Unprecedented. Okay, case closed - I win.”

“No, Tony, not case closed,” you argued, getting so frustrated it was hurting your head. “How is it any better if the UN is in control of us? What? Are we just going to be extra careful not to kill people? How is this any better?” you asked. You could not fathom how giving the UN control over you all made anyone any more safer than they were. How Nat and Tony and the rest of them didn’t see that was beyond your comprehension.

“I have to go,” Steve suddenly said as he tossed the Accords onto the table and headed downstairs. All of you looked around the room at each other with confused looks.

“I, uh, I’ll go check on him,” you said as you got up and followed him. you saw him leaning against the bottom of the stair rail, his head bowed as his hand hid his face. “Steve?” you gently said. “You okay?”

He looked up at you, his eyes glassy. “It’s Peggy,” he answered.

Instantly, you knew. You’d only known everyone on the team for a year, but you had a way of reading people. Besides,  you and Steve were best friends.

“Oh no, I’m so sorry, Steve.” You immediately pulled him into a hug, his massive form overtaking yours as he gripped you and you heard and felt him start to cry. You held him a long time, rubbing your arms on his back soothingly as he gripped you tight. You weren’t going to quiet him, tell him it would be okay. You knew that sort of pain and you knew the generic shit never consoled anyone, so you didn’t say anything.

After a few minutes, he said he wanted to be alone in his room. You nodded and said you would tell the others.

You came back upstairs and everyone looked to you for an answer as to why Steve left abruptly.

“Peggy passed away,” you informed.

A murmurs of shocks, gasps, and soft curses floated around the room at the tragic news.

“Talk about timing,” Sam said.

After that, everyone went around the room, signing the Accords if they so chose. The only people left were you, Sam, Wanda, and Steve.

“I can’t sign that. Not unless Steve does,” you informed emphatically.

“Jesus Christ, kid. He isn’t your father,” Tony barked. “You don’t have to say and do everything he does.”

You flinched at his anger. “It’s not like that. I just don’t feel right signing something he doesn’t agree with. He’s been around longer than all of us. He’s wiser. If he feels it’s not right in his heart to sign this, then I gotta back that up. He would do the same for me.”

“I can’t believe this. This is unbelievable,” Tony said, clearly angry. “I don’t have time for this. Nat, Vision, work on the rest of them,” Tony ordered before he left.

“Y/N,” Nat started, looking at you.

“No, Nat. I’m not fucking signing that thing,” you insisted. “If they want to come for us, fine. Let them. It will show the world who the real danger is, the real threat.”

You got up and went downstairs to Steve’s room.

“Hey,” you said softly as you entered. “I’m sorry, I don’t want to bother you. I just wanted to see if you needed anything or anyone?”

He looked up from his bed where he was staring at his phone. He gave you a gentle half smile. “You could never bother me, Y/N. I’m okay though,” he informed.

“You sure?”

“Well...I knew this would come,” he said. “It’s not like she was going to be around forever.”

You gave a slight nod as you stepped farther into the room. “Do you want someone to come with you to the services?” you asked.

After a moment of thought, he answered, “Yeah. I think I’d appreciate that.”

You nodded and smiled. “Anything for you. I’ll see if Sam wants to come and we’ll join you,” you informed in a soothing tone.

“You’re too good to me,” Steve said with a small laugh.

“I only repay the kindness you continue to show me,” you informed with a shrug. “I can never repay you for what you’ve done for me, Steve. the least I can do is be with you in your time of need.”

Summary: As a nurse, you see too many faces a day. But you remember Dean. After a few months, Dean and Sam are back to your town for their job. Turns out, you and Dean have someone more in silent.

Author’s note: Sorry for the bad summary, but whatever. This story is inspired by Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the ending scene between Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff. I adapted Nat’s line, “Will you do me a favour?” and altered her next line, though I wanted a bad ending – the same ending with CA. Btw, you can go to my Wattpad account for more SPN fanfic. Sorry this is unedited.

You and Dean have known each other, but you have only met him only one time on this one day when he just got back from his job. He’s got scratches and bruises on his face and his knuckles were bloody. When you asked how did he got that injuries, he simply told you that he’s got into a minor accident and that nobody got hurt too badly including his little brother.

You admired his bravery for whatever accidents he got into. You do not know why you happened to feel that, but looking at him and deep into his eye, you saw that he welcomes to everything in order to save someone’s life. That is how you remember your patients. While you remember your previous patient was kind of sensitive to medicine, Dean was the good brother who still does not know that his little brother is not little anymore.

The hospital is busy as always. You just finished washing your hand in the toilet. Your hands were bloody for helping a little boy. A rusty nail got stuck into his leg and you were helping the doctor to take it out while coaxing the little boy with his mother. You exited the toilet and wanting to get back to your department when you heard a person’s loud cry from this particular room.

You were curious as a cat. But the first thought that came into your head was not because you were familiar with the voice, but with what kind of trouble the patient got into. Although you have a rank, but you cannot simply do another person’s job.

You saw your patient a few months ago, sitting on the hospital bed with a nurse in front of him, patching his wound on his shoulder. Although he was strong, but while the nurse cleaning and patching his bruises on the face, he hissed and mad a face. You knew, if the hospital is allowed to bring a beer, he would be drinking one.

“Dean Winchester,” you called him. You were leaning against the wall, with your arms crossed on your chest. The nurse was surprised to see you there, afraid, as well, she did something wrong. “Ha, I can’t believe I see you again.”

Dean looked up to you. He seemed like he didn’t recognise you for a moment, until you gave him a look that could remind him of you. It was your eyes actually. He thought the way you look at him was different.

“Oh, you. Hey,” he said, not remembering your name, unfortunately. But you did not blame him because you only saw each other for one day.

“That’s okay, Nancy. You can go,” you told the young staff nurse. When you said that, she appeared relieved for you did not blame her for any wrong doings. She exited the room excitedly, did not want to get involved with anything with you two.

Then, you turned to the Winchester. “You got a job here?” you asked, still did not know what his real job is. You did not actually care, though, because you know everybody has their own private life.

Dean smiled at you. He did not actually remember if he ever told you about his job, but he thought not because you did not say ‘hunt’. “Yeap. And you still work here, huh? What’s your name?”

“(y/n),” you answered his question. You were not a little bit offended when he asked you your name, because the last time you guys met, Dean was not as flirty as he is with other girls.

“Right. So, uh, am I good to go?” Despite the bruises and wounds on his face, he looked cleaner and a little yellow because of the iodine the last nurse patched him.

You chuckled at him as you shook your head for his childish behaviour. Dean looked at you in confusion thought he still had a smile on him. “Yes, you can go now,” you answered his question. “Your bill is probably up by now.”

“Oh, good.” Dean stood up. He took his jacket awkwardly and slowly with the good shoulder. You gave him an excess to walk out of the room.

The next three days were pretty simple happened in your life. It means, you woke up in the morning, having breakfast, and then go to work. Or if you have a night shift, you’d be tidying up your house in the morning or do some grocery shopping. You are living alone in the house, so you do not need much kitchen stuffs because you usually dine at a restaurant somewhere when you’re so tired.

During these three days, you kept on bumping into Dean Winchester. It was weird for the both of you. At some random time, you’d be seeing him at the grocery store. Some other random time, you’d be seeing at a burger stall. And then, you saw him with Sam at a police station. And now, you’re seeing Sam Dean with another woman at your neighbourhood. This time, you were really curious because the woman was your friend.

“Annie?” you called the woman. Three of them were bundled up at the porch of her house. Annie sat in between the men. She looked scared.

Three of them looked up to see you, and Annie quickly, practically, threw herself at you and hugging you tightly. You did not know what happen, but Annie sobbed on your shoulders for a very long time and all those times, both of you were standing. You tried hard to console her, to keep her calmed down before you began to ask what happened to her.

Finally, when Annie stopped crying, you brought her to sit back down. Dean stood up and gave his seat to you. As he leaned against the wooden pillar, with his arms and legs crossed like he was having a photoshoot session, he watched at you asked Annie.

“What’s wrong, Ann?”

“My boyfriend,” she croaked. “He- he’s dead.”

“What?” You looked up to the brothers as if asking for their confirmation. “How? Did someone kill him? Road accident or something?”

“Something,” Dean answered for Annie for she looked like she did not know what to answer to Dean.

“I’m sorry?”

“Something killed him.” Dean sighed and relaxed himself. From crossing his arms on his chest, he shifted to shoving his hands into his jeans.

“What do you mean ‘something’?” You glanced in between Sam and Dean, hungry for explanation. You cannot see your friend lives a miserable life. Not knowing what killed your boyfriend really hurt like hell.

“We think there is a ghost haunting Annie’s house,” Sam answered for the three of them.

“And we think the ghost wants Annie.”

You recoiled, half-heartedly laughed at Dean’s not-so-really a joke. “A ghost wants Ann?”

As you waited for their answer, you saw how Dean and Sam looked so hard on you. The brothers were sharing glances that told you there was something that you yet don’t know about them. Sam looked reluctant to open his mouth, meanwhile Dean was battling either to tell you or not. Whatever it is, it makes you wonder about Dean’s job now because nobody ever talked seriously about a ghost except them.

No longer after that, after watching Dean a few more minutes, Sam finally said, “Hey, Annie, let’s get you inside. Have some hot chocolate or something. It will help.” Without protesting, Annie nodded her head in agreement, and Sam and Annie left, leaving you and Dean alone.

You were confused as to why would Sam does that? You are wondering, and questioning about Dean’s job and his life cycle, but why would Sam leaves you two alone like, in private? You did not know how the brothers work on their secret code, but you knew there must be something that is happening between you and Dean because you have two older brothers that are really closed, and they act like that.

“Dean?” you called for his attention once you heard the door clicked. “There’s something you want to tell me?”

“Sam and I, we’re, uh,” Dean began as he took a seat beside you. “We’re hunters.”

“Like what? Hunting deers? Bears?”

“No!” Dean actually laughed for how stupid you sounded when you thought he and his brothers are hunting animals. Though he cannot blame you for that. It’s just that, the way you said it was funny to him. “We’re not that type of hunters.”

“Then, how?”

“Supernatural,” Dean opened up to you. “We hunt demons, ghost, werewolves.”

“Werewolves?” You chuckled. “There are no werewolves. There is no such thing as demons and ghost or whatever that is.”

“Well, trust me, there are,” Dean said with a smirk on his face. Usually, he’d be having a rough conversation with a person who needed to be saved. Meanwhile, here, it felt odd for explaining his jo to someone who is as calm as you, and in a very calming situation. And Dean felt weird for having this soothing conversation.

“Oh. I guess I should the Bible more, then.”

Dean did not comment anything on that because he knew he had no rights to. And he knew who he is. You are someone who has a good job with legal payment, meanwhile him? He and Sam are close to as a hobo. They don’t have a long-term home. They don’t have money. They don’t have a life. Dean knows you are someone to be respected.

You and Dean do not have any conversation later on. Dean seemed very awkward. He wanted to talk to you more, but you looked busy. You were on your phone, checking text messages and voicemails and emails. Although you could do that at home, but you had to now because you are needed at the hospital.

“I have to go,” you said while your eyes are still on the phone as you stood. Dean followed.

“Wait, where are you going?” You did not see it, but he looked sad.

“The hospital. They need me.”

Dean took time to accept that, and by the time he did, he nodded his head slowly, looking everywhere but you.

“See you later.” You turned to get to your car, but what Dean said next stops you.

“I don’t think there’ll be any ‘see you later’,” he said with a nervous smile. Well, it took every energy in him to say that. He was so afraid of the thought that you might laugh at him for indirectly asking you out.

“Oh.” Your face changed. To be honest, you didn’t want to see him go. You’re used to seeing him everywhere now. “Alright, then. I guess this is a goodbye?”

Dean couldn’t hide his expression that he looked very disappointed when you say that because he thought you’d be asking ‘why’ or ‘please, don’t leave.’ But, oh, well, the truth always hurt.

“Yeah, I guess.”

You both smiled at each other. Dean still looked sad and disappointed, though he tried to mask it with his sweet smile. It hurt you to see him like that. A brave and strong man could show his affection towards a nurse like you. For you, you’re just a nurse and you don’t deserve a guy like him. You know he needs attention by looking roughly at his personality, but your job is inconsistent. You cannot be asking him if he’s okay 24/7. You’re a chief nurse. You have a lot of work to do.

That is mainly the reason why you refused to approach him the second time you met him at the hospital because you cannot give what he needs, and that is a love from a woman. Even though after seeing him too many times, you cannot be too close with him. In fact, if it wasn’t because of Annie, you won’t be talking to him today.

You descended the short stairs at Annie’s porch, hugging yourself while thinking if you made the right decision. Someone who looks like Dean is easy to find, but someone like him doesn’t. And to find someone who wants you for who you are is not easy either. But you’d rather be single until you die than being with someone who wants your money.

Dean’s eyes didn’t blink at all as he watched you walked to your car. Until one moment when you stopped in the middle, like you’re making a life choice to either choose right or left. Dean stared at you as you turned around to him.

“Will you do me a favour?” you started, still hugging yourself. Your hair falls on your shoulders just like how Dean likes it to be.

Dean did not answer, but you did not care. You continued.

“Give me a call when the case with Ann is done.”

With that, Dean smiled widely. “And your number might be?”

“Ask Ann. She knows.”

And then, you left.

Intolerant Karens are ruining the internet

The year 2020 is going to be remembered for a few things - one of those is the spread of a new coronavirus around the world, the other is the proliferation of the Karen meme, cancel culture being everywhere, and life just being a little crazier then any of us expected.

I need to preface this episode with something - in order to do this episode I had to run a little experiment on twitter - and I had to intentionally troll online. It doesn't make me feel the greatest to have to do that - but it is what it is. If I would have prefaced my tweet with the words: this is an intentional troll for a podcast - I would not have gotten the responses that I did. And boy did I get responses.

Before we get into what I did let's define a few things. In current culture, Karen is almost a universal meme. It stands for a person who wants to call the manager for any slight inconvenience. Did their drink come too hot? They want to talk to the manager. Too cold. Manager. Person used the wrong tone. Manager. Person did....you get the idea. And of course - the male version of Karen is Ken - and honestly I feel sorry for people named karen/ken as they have to live with the knowledge of the meme that their name has become.

Tolerance. I'm going to read this right from Merriam-Webster. sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one's own or the act of allowing something. The oxford dictionary further defines the word as: the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with.

America is a melting pot - we allow people to come from all over the world here. And we welcome people here - there is some shared values as Americans that we share - but for the most part we are tolerant of other's cultures/opinions/views - well at least not online - and America has been made better for it as we get to learn from others we may never have interacted with otherwise.

But tolerance is required in order for that to work - and online it seems more and more if you don't espouse the views of the vocal minority then you are threatened, shouted down (virtually), berated, insulted, and a whole host of other things.

When I say vocal minority - I am not kidding. Only 7% of the United States population uses twitter. 87% of people have heard of twitter - but only 7% use it. On the flipside - 88% of people have heard of Facebook and 41% have a profile on Facebook. This would be crazy enough - but it gets worse actually. Of all the content created on twitter, 80% of the content is generated by the top 10% of twitter users - and the top 10% of twitter users tend to focus on politics - specifically left leaning politics. Breaking this down further - 77% of twitter users are wealthier then the general public, and 41% are making 75k or more per year. Something important to know about all of these statistics - business accounts were taken out of the data and are not considered when averages are generated.

Now I bring up all these stats to give you an idea of what the average twitter person is. They are a very vocal minority (minority because they are typically less then 10% of the general twitter population) but they are the squeaky wheel that gets the oil. It is because of this low engagement and usage that I personally have not really engaged with twitter too much - both personally and with the podcast.

Now with all of that - what did I do last week?

Last week Kroeger (the parent company for a chain of grocery stores, jewelry stores, medical clinics, etc) posted on twitter that they were going to mandate face masks be worn by all people entering their stores starting on 7/20/2020 - and let me make this very clear - this is a privately owned company on private property - they have every right to mandate conditions of entry into their stores and if they want to require masks they are well within their rights to do so and if people do not want to wear a mask - they can be turned away at the company's discretion - and no I don't believe a store requiring a mask is an attack on anyone's rights. Now if you want to have a conversation on the effectiveness of wearing a mask and want to come at this with scientific (peer reviewed) papers - then lets have that discussion - but entry into a business is an open and shut case - as they can control entry into their business in areas where there is no local mask mandate.

So back to that tweet. I had the idea for this episode swirling around in my mind for a little bit - but had never setup a second social media account - so I decided to just go ahead and do the deed from my main social media account. So I went onto twitter and responded to the Kroeger tweet (sorry Kroeger for trolling) with the tweet of "Thanks for letting me know to no longer patronize your stores - appreciate it" - nothing incendiary about masks, nothing calling mask wearers sheeple (I have seen that way too much on social media), nothing on this being against anyone's rights, nothing about hating on people for going there wearing masks - just a simple - I choose to take my business elsewhere since your requiring a mask - and twitter did not disappoint.

You of course had a decent number of people liking the post - which is going to happen no matter what is said - but the responses - those were the things I was looking for. There were a few "glad you won't be there" posts - but those are everyday run of the mill. Then there are the intolerant karens/kens. So since this happened (and after I thanked them for participating in this experiment) a lot of the people have since privated their twitter accounts or deleted their response - one would imagine (and hope) because they were ashamed of what they wrote and did online.

So the responses? I had one person threatening to contact my employer since I was such a threat to "myself and others" with the ending of "fking winger terrorist" - because I was taking my business elsewhere? I had a bunch of others calling me "dirty and nasty mexican", idiot, and many other hateful things (again most deleted now). I had one person - one - who engaged civilly with me - and due to his civil engagement I let him in on why I was doing what I was doing and he admitted that his initial reaction was probably over the top and not necessary.

For everyone that responded to me - I responded with "I have had this virus already and recovered - please tell me why I should have to be mandated to wear a mask". Not one person brought up that it was the store requesting that I wear it (if they had - I would’ve said your right) and instead just continued their insult. One person brought up the red herring of Chicken Pox and how adults can get it since they loose resistance over the many years and say this is the same as covid stating this as a fact - when (unfortunately for them) the CDC said they are not sure on the state of immunity. If they had brought up it could be possible since we don’t have the science - they would’ve gotten a point (and as I check my list on Sunday - looks like one person did bring that up - good for them!)

A few people brought up news websites (which were not marked as safe by newsguard) and said this was their proof on why I was an idiot. I then asked for peer reviewed scientific papers on the effectiveness of either makes, immunity, etc. Their only response - there is no time for science we have to do what they say because science takes too long to be useful.

Not one person wanted to engage in any conversation on this and instead just used twitter as a platform of outrage - using it to shout their insults with confidence that no one should even have the right to talk counter to them. They were the law - and I had to bend to their will - and if I didn't - I was an intolerant evil biggot because I dare say that I will take my business elsewhere. It would’ve been one thing if they engaged in a conversation about why I said I was taking my business elsewhere - but nope - just a quick jaunt from taking my business elsewhere to your a dirty nasty Mexican. (BTW my twitter handle is @averagehalfmex - my old twitter handle has been archived and I have reserved it in case I want to use it again)

I got all of this and to thank those involved - I tagged all the most vile people in the threads in one tweet - and I was rewarded. I had a very nice moment of schadenfreude. These people started going after one another - accusing each other of being hateful conservatives and how they dont deserve to have opinions, and they were less then human, and many other insulting things. They didn't realize they were all on the same side - and instead just went after one another. One person responded with "Did i just get punked?" because I thanked them for sharing their opinions with another going "oh you god a podcast - that’s nice - all your X number of twitter subscribers" - again I point back to the fact that only 7% of Americans use twitter to begin with and only the very loud vocal minority tend to be there.

I started out this experiment with the thesis that social media was toxic, but one of the people (as they were trying to backpeddle and insult me at the same time after I said I was going to do a podcast on this) convinced me on something - it is not social media that is toxic - it is people that are toxic - specifically the intolerant Karens/Kens that congregate on twitter.

So what can you do to not be part of the toxic online culture? Good question.

The first thing is to assume that the intentions of the person posting something comes from a place of good. Now obviously if someone is saying to kill yourself, or other things along that line you can't assume anything about that is good - just ignore those people - they are too far gone to be able to do anything about. In fact they are just looking for other people to react to their content as they enjoy the attention - the best way to destroy a troll is to just ignore them. But for everyone else - if they post an opinion that you do not agree with - assume they are coming from a spot of good intention. They have an opinion that you do not agree with - but does that necessarily mean that they are bad? No. It doesn't - I'm sure you have opinions that you hold that they would disagree with an would want them to show you respect as well if they knew about it. Social media (especially for people we don't know personally) gives us just a small glimpse into the other person's life - we don't know the full story behind why the person may hold that opinion - we all come from a variety of backgrounds which shapes our views and opinions. Plus in order to have a tolerant society - we must allow for others to have different opinions then us - show me a family that all people in the family have the exact same opinions on everything and I'll show you a boring family that is lying to everyone else and keeping their opinions secret.

Second thing to do - ask questions. Try to get to know why the other person has the perspective they have. They may have a great reason to think like they do - and once you know why their opinion might shift to the "oh that makes sense" category instead of the initial emotional based ranking of that opinion.

Third - know that people are people - they are going to have differing opinions - and this melting pot is what makes life entertaining and interesting. Everyone having the same opinions is boring - and a big red flag - group think is a dangerous thing and that is how people abuse power by using social manipulation to make group think the norm.

But above all - be good to people - don't immediately cuss someone out or insult them just because they have a different thought then you - take the opportunity to learn why they think the way they do, because when opinions are brought into the sunlight - things that are incorrect and toxic not only are exposed but are disinfected - you are unable to change a person's mind with insults - however engaging in a relationship with a person and making connections with them on a personal level is the most effective way to change a person's opinions.

By the way - I will not be releasing the screenshots of those that tweeted at me. They didn’t know they were going to be part of this experiment - and I don’t believe anyone deserves hate/cancel no matter how off base they may be at times.
