Summary of results - Intercultural and cross-linguistic perspectives on the whump genre
Here is a summary of the results from the research thesis, "Intercultural and cross-linguistic perspectives on the whump genre"! This was part of my studying a Master of Contemporary International Studies. The research aimed to explore how whump-interested people connect with the whump genre cross-culturally and cross-linguistically.
Back in June/July this year (2023), I sent out a questionnaire open to any whump-interested person, and also invited interviews for bilingual whump-interested people. I've finally finished my thesis, and overall was awarded an A- for it!
The full thesis is available now to read on Academia.edu, and will also be available on IPU New Zealand's library website in January 2024.

This research was approved for Human Research Ethics Clearance by the IPU New Zealand Research and Development Commitee on 3rd May 2023 (HREC-2023-05-03-01).

(NB: Due to there being an extensive amount of results, I've only summarised the key findings of the results section and a brief conclusion here. I've referenced page numbers for the full thesis if you'd like to read the extended version.)

Summary of results (Questionnaire)
233 respondents | 92 different cultural/faith-based identities
The questionnaire was used to answer Research Question 1, "How do the aspects of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and Schwartz’ universal human values reflect in the characteristics of whump genre identity?"
The questionnaire explored four themes associated with whump genre concepts - “agency,” “comfort,” “stoicism,” and “knowledge” - and found (p. 87):
For the theme of “agency,” questionnaire participants tended to perceive a greater importance for agency for the caretaker and whumper roles. This may be related to the caretaker and whumper role characters’ abilities to carry out their roles of caretaking and whumping respectively. While the cultural dimensions did not appear to be factors inherent to the theme of agency for the whumpee role in a whump genre story, this appeared to work towards supporting the cross-cultural enjoyment of whump. For the theme of “comfort,” hurt comfort, physical comfort and long-term recovery may be more accommodating of cultural dimension dynamics and have a greater capacity to fully realise the goals of Schwartz’ values. For the theme of “stoicism,” the way in which these dimensions can so diversely be applied to this theme suggests a cross-culturally applicable ground. For the theme of “knowledge,” the balance between the certainty of a known whumpee and the uncertainty of an unknown whumper indicate variable tolerance of ambiguity within the whump genre. This suggests a cross-culturally applicable ground.
Summary of results (Interview)
The full results section for the questionnaire can be read in the full thesis (pp. 61-87).
-----
31 interviewees (15 spoken, 16 written) | 24 different languages
The interview was used to answer Research Question 2, "How do bilingual whump-interested people perceive the ability to convey themes of hurt comfort (a subgenre of whump) in different languages?"
The interview questions were categorised into themes:
Theme 1: Preferences for language when interacting with fiction
Theme 2: Comparisons of different languages’ abilities to convey physical and emotional pain
Theme 3: Limitations or difficulties experienced when conveying whump in, and across, different languages
Theme 4: Cultural, social, and/or linguistic reasons influencing pronunciation of “whump”
Following transcription of the interviews, a thematic analysis involving examining code co-occurences found (p. 123):
For “Theme 1: Preferences for language when interacting with fiction,” preferences tended to be associated with the availability of media, the ability to connect with the author’s intended meaning, and the level of ease and comfort with which interviewees could engage with the fictional media. For “Theme 2: Comparisons of different languages’ abilities to convey physical and emotional pain,” interviewees’ comparisons highlighted differing ways of presenting and conveying pain in language, for example, through language features and words. Overall, interviewees felt that the languages which they were fluent in were generally equally capable of conveying physical and emotional pain, although different languages tended to approach the communicating of pain in different ways. For “Theme 3: Limitations or difficulties experienced when conveying whump in, and across, different languages,” the perceived limitations and difficulties experienced across languages tended to be associated with difficulties in conveying semantic, pragmatic and cultural meaning across languages, and tended to stem from the differences between sociolinguistic approaches to communicating ideas in languages. For “Theme 4: Cultural, social, and/or linguistic reasons influencing pronunciation of “whump,” common cultural, social and linguistic reasons for interviewees’ pronunciations of “whump” included how interviewees expected the word to sound based on their expectations of the letters in the phonological environment, the impact of a lack of having heard the word spoken aloud, sociocultural influences, intuition and language education.
Conclusions (brief exerpt from p. 130)
The full results section for the interview can be read in the full thesis (pp. 61-87). Interview transcripts (sensitive details filtered out) can be read in Appendix H (pp. 177-399).
-----
Research Question 1 explored cross-culturally applicable aspects of the whump genre. The findings suggested that themes of the whump genre accommodate variations in cultural social orientations and values, thereby enabling an interculturally common ground among whump-interested people.
Using qualitative research (interview), Research Question 2 explored how bilingual whump-interested people perceive and connect with hurt comfort themes across different languages. The findings suggest that multiple factors contribute to how bilingual whump-interested people engage with the whump genre, including but not limited to first and second languages as a tool to experience closely or otherwise distance the subject with, the availability of whump media in different languages, and manner of conveying aspects of pain and comfort through lexical, phonetic, grammatical and cultural aspects of language.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the research - the questionnaire and/or the interview! Your voices are all important in this kind of research, and are all very much appreciated!

Hello! I realized that I've followed you for a while (no idea why tbh) and although I've seen your posts, I realize I don't actually know what whump means? Or what all those variants in your intro post are? You don't have to answer this if you don't want to, but I'm curious - some of the posts you've reblogged seem interesting.
Oh!! Of course! Whump is a genre of media (often referring to fanfic sort of like how fluff or angst is used to refer to fanfic). It is pretty much hurt/comfort that heavily places influence on the effect the hurt has on the character (physically and/or emotionally). The character being hurt is often referred to as the “whumpee” and the character doing the hurting (if there is one) as the “whumper”. A supporting character which helps the whumpee is often referred to as the “caretaker”.
These are common character placeholders for prompts, for example: Experiment Whumpee escapes from their evil scientist creator Whumper, is found by Caretaker and introduced to being a human.
Example of a sentence using some terminology: “I saw the new Star Wars character and immediately went to write a whump fanfic with them as the whumpee! I’m sorry but I just had to whump them. Everything I write turns out whumpy! I guess I’m just good at whumping my characters.”
People like the whump genre for a bunch of different reasons, including but not limited to: it’s a coping mechanism, it’s a good way to drive character development, it’s just fun to read/watch, it’s a kink (not everyone or even the majority, but it’s a valid reason), it gives a feeling of catharsis.
Basically like angst but for physical hurt instead of emotional.
There are different “sub genres” of whump, like lab whump, environmental whump, pet whump or such. Most of them are pretty self explanatory. Lab whump often takes place in a lab, with the hurt revolving around things being experimented on. Environmental whump revolves more around “accidents” and hurt that happens from things like frostbite or heatstroke or even building collapses. Pet whump revolves around the idea of dehumanization, or treating people like “pets” (and often the recovery/learning how to be human again after that abuse). And etc.
Thanks for asking!
I know it sounds sorta weird, but as a disclaimer, 99.99 percent of the people in this community (or “whumpers” as we often jokingly call ourselves) don’t want to hurt anyone irl. We just like exploring fictional characters being hurt and the impact of their distress. I often whump my characters and then let them be comforted tenderly by their friends/family when I feel bad and crave the comfort myself lol. Or sometimes I write whump as a form of venting (hurt the characters instead of myself), or just because it’s fun!
Also yes it’s healthy. My therapist said so. And a bunch of other people’s therapists did to lol.
I know you likely wouldn’t judge or assume I want to hurt people I just have had some bad experiences so I felt the need to make a disclaimer just in case. 😅
Oh… and I’m not sure if I ever explained this to @fading-bisexual-queen-milkshake. So if you were wondering, fade. I think I did? But maybe not in depth? 😅

Rat Race | WhumpNano Part 2
Cutting it a little close to the wire again, but we’re here! And this time, things are a little less introductory. Additionally, a brief glimpse of who will soon be our main whumpee.
For yesterday’s Choose Your Own Whump, A won by the slightest margin. That means that this piece is being told from the perspective of the heroes.
With that said, enjoy!
CW//Knock-out gas
The van growled to a stop as soon as it passed the threshold.
There were plenty of things that deviated the villains of Metropolis from its common criminals. Their possession of inhuman abilities was one, certainly. That was why they were called supervillains, after all. Yet, there were other aspects to the classification. For one thing, villains had an aspect of presentation about them. They did not attack in the alleyways, didn’t take out the loners of the world.
No. Villains wanted to be seen.
More than that, they wanted to be known. Common criminals were looked down on with an air of scorn. Meanwhile, villains were watched with an air of almost cautious reverence, the same way oversized predators were regarded at the zoo.
All except that villains were not contained behind the bars of a cage.
With this, they developed a sort of public mystique around themselves. Some enjoyed it, reveled in it, built their whole lives off of the delight they received from watching civilians skitter around like frightened ants.
That was not the type of villain Noirceur was.
In a way, Firecrest supposed, that was what made them frightening. Other villains had tells. Other villains cared about presentation, about media attention. Noirceur, on the other hand, only wanted to get the job done.
It didn’t matter how many people fell beneath her boots in the process.
On the surface, there was nothing particularly devastating about her powers. As her name implied, she held command over darkness, possessing the ability to encapsulate whole regions in it. Sunlight, electricity, and anything but the barest semblances of warmth could not hope to penetrate Noirceur’s domes of shroud.
From the outside, there was only black. The dome had taken up a large portion of Metropolis’ downtown, and though most civilians had evacuated, it was certainly not all.
More than that, there was a villain to take down.
Imperius put the van, stopped in its tracks by the influence of the dome, into park, even with the fact that the electronics within had all long since died out. He withdrew a lighter from a pocket, holding the tiny flame up to his face, illuminating just enough so that his lips could be seen.
“Our sources are saying that Noirceur is targeting an office building. An unknown gaseous agent has been spread through the ventilation system. It is safe to assume that all civilians inside have been rendered unconscious.
First priority is getting them out of the building, and to a medical facility. Noirceur comes second. We should assume that she is in the building until we know otherwise. She’s going to be an obstacle, but we need to focus on the civilians.
    Got that, Firecrest?”
Firecrest felt embarrassment flood her chest as she cast her gaze away from her mentor. Did he really have to be doing this now, in the middle of the van, in front of the rest of the team? He was overbearing, that was for damn sure, but he could at least do it in private! She wasn’t a damn kid!
“Got it.” She snapped in return. The rest of the van fell into awkward silence momentarily, before Imperius called out:
“This is going to be dangerous, so no splitting up. We stay together. We don’t know what Noirceur is planning.”
Holding the end of the lighter momentarily between his teeth, he grabbed a lantern from beneath the seat, igniting the wick within. In an instant, the interior of the van was freed from the darkness that had formerly encased it.
Those within the van needed no order, no call of ‘go team go.’ As soon as their leader gave a simple nod, they burst from the vehicle, filling the street and gathering in short order.
It hadn’t been for long that Metropolis had had its own team of heroes. It was the villains that had come first, the newly-crafted, newly-malicious threats to the city. Compared to their professionalism, The Lodge, the city’s only real hero group, was more than slapdash. The group had been formed in Imperius’ basement, for heaven’s sake.
There had been growth since then, of course, but not much. The villains always grew faster. It was an ongoing, everlasting game of catch up.
As it stood, however, The Lodge was far from pathetic.
Alongside Imperius and Firecrest, the van produced four other figures, as shrouded in shadow as they were.
“Argon, I want you in the rear.” Imperius had already started rushing forth as he spoke. “Watch my six, and make sure we don’t get snuck up on.”
A young person, jacket marred by oil stains and brown hair held back by a worn sweatband, gave a firm nod, drifting to the back of the lineup. Besides Firecrest, Argon was by far the youngest of the group, a college dropout with skills far more suited for the garage than the classroom. A thick rope of glowing purple was threaded over and under their fingers, resembling brass knuckles in a sense. The extra light source gave them all the advantage in the situation.
“Aloe and Duple, you’re on medical duty with Allele. We can’t know that that gas didn’t harm the civilians, not for sure.”
The three remaining members of the group shared a glance of confirmation with one another. Allele stuck out like a sore thumb in the darkness, given the lab coat she more or less refused to remove. A similar thing could be said about Aloe, though in an entirely opposite sense, in regards to the thin vines curled through their hair. Out of the three, Duple could perhaps be called the most inconspicuous-- though that was only because, at the moment, there was only one of him.
With orders dispensed, the motley crew instead turned their focus to the office building stretching up to the very peak of the shadowed dome. It was needless to say that Imperius led the way, guiding his team through the front doors.
Calling the structure a simple office building was perhaps inadequate. In fact, it was more of a skyscraper. And, yet, upon entering, the structure was utterly silent. There was a terribly haunting air about the front lobby, especially given the empty reception desk with its sole chair knocked over.
“Keep going.” Imperius’ voice was barely above a low whisper as he guided the group by lantern light to a spiralling stairwell. Meticulously, they ascended a single floor, before pushing out onto the first available landing.
    A massacre.
That was the only way to truly describe it. A massacre. Though the bodies strewn about still appeared to be breathing, there was no other evidence towards their life. Every worker on the floor, every person in every cubicle, had seemed to collapse wherever they’d been. Dropped coffee cups and computers littered the carpet.
    “Allele.” Imperius spoke simply.
The doctor took the stage. “Aloe, Duple, gather everyone into one spot. I’ll need to examine each one. Argon, with me. I’ll need your light.”
With a series of ‘got it’s,’ the group spread out to perform their work. Imperius and Firecrest stayed behind. The leader of The Lodge had always preferred watching over his crew, protecting them, and his sidekick had inherited the same role.
Yet, there was something off. Something that felt to be prickling at the back of Firecrest’s neck, as though something was behind her. She checked, quickly, but, of course, found nothing at all.
“Everything alright?” Imperius questioned, to which his sidekick gave a nod.
    “Only worried.”
“It’s understandable to be worried. But you’re brave, I know you are. And the rest of the team knows it, too. They need us to be the brave ones, so they can save the day.”
    “It just feels too easy.”
    “What do you mean?”
“We didn’t exactly make the most stealthy of entrances. Shouldn’t Noirceur have, I don’t know, sensed us?”
    “She probably has.”
    “Does that not worry you?”
“It does. But she wants us to find her. By refusing to play into her hands, we’ve already won half the battle.”
    “You really think so?”
“If we strike first, they have the upper hand. So we will simply not strike.”
Firecrest nodded, feeling the slightest curling of a smile on the edges of her lips. It made her feel better, even if it was barely palpable. The overwhelming presence of Imperius simply made her feel safe, as though she were just as protected by him as any civilian.
As long as they played it safe, they would be okay. The villains would get frustrated, they’d slip up, and then the heroes would have the-
Something tickled the back of Firecrest’s neck. This time, however, it was no mere illusion of her own anxieties. She whipped around, hands balling to fists at her sides.
The villains had entered in silence. How in the hell had they managed that?
It didn’t matter. Firecrest felt her throat begin to close up in terror as she looked upon the two figures. Now that she thought about it, she had never seen Noirceur in person.
The woman was far from intimidating based on her stature alone, but she had no need to be. The manifested shadows floating around her, forming a uniform and a cape, provided all the intimidation factor she could ever need. From the writhing shadow around her, the only part of her visible was her face.
At her side stood, well, a sidekick. The lab-coated woman was nearly entirely hidden by her boss’s presence. It didn’t seem that she minded, though, given how furiously she was writing on a clipboard. The oversized, thick-rimmed glasses perched on her nose glinted in the lantern light that provided the room’s sole source of illumination. Her white hair and lab coat stood in stark contrast to her boss’s overwhelmingly shadowy aesthetic.
Noirceur looked up. Imperius met her gaze.
    A pause.
    Imperius shuddered. Imperius never shuddered.
“Firecrest?” The hero’s voice came as little more than a tiny whisper. “I’m going to need your help with this one.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
No choice this time around. However, with our whumpee now (somewhat) introduced, I have a more general question. Would you guys prefer more whump, more caretaking, or a little mix of both? The heroes here will either take on the role of whumper or caretaker, depending on how the story goes.
Thank you for reading!

This is my masterlist, so far, of the characters I think I'd like to see more whump of. Some are obvious whump favs of mine (lookin' at you, Reid) and others are newer additions that I would love to discover whump for (and maybe write some?). Just thought I'd share my masterlist, of sorts, of all my favorite whumpees!
TW: drugs, mention of a lot of diff whump scenarios~ Contains spoilers for all the shows/media mentioned in the tags~ Sorry this is long!
Spencer Reid (Criminal Minds, TV show)
Not only does he get taken hostage a bunch, shot at a bunch, actually shot, poisoned by anthrax or something, kidnapped and tortured, forced to play russian roulette, addicted to dilaudid, framed for murder, stabbed while in prison, played love/mind games with a deadly female assassin, and has a mom with schizophrenia and alzheimers, but he's also a genius and super young and skinny. Literally what more can I ask for other than a better final season (I refuse to watch it).
Gon Freecs (Hunter x Hunter, anime)
I've seen what's on netflix, and I've briefly seen scenes where he's like, hulk/god mode, and that's cool, but I would just love to see him be broken by maybe Hisoka but I'm not sure. I've seen him get his hands blown off and like, beaten in a fight, but never really get tortured, and I'd love to see it.
Jake Peralta (Brooklyn 99, TV show)
Aw. Happy dumb adult man has no idea the weight of the universe. He goes undercover in the mafia in the show and I read a fanfic on ao3 where he was found out as a cop and tortured for it, and I really did enjoy it. Gimme mafia whump, and his team finding him.
Connor (Detroit: Become Human, video game)
Ah! Slowly becoming human and having emotions. His father-figure partner slowly opening up? An internal conflict between following orders and making his own decisions? Having to put himself in harm's way just to solve a case? And of course, I havent seen all the routes, but I wouldve loved to see the routes where he gets hurt as much as possible (and feels scared about it, poor baby).
Klaus & Five (The Umbrella Academy, TV show)
I love Klaus. A gay, hippie, druggie with issues (he was in 'nam) and plenty of coping mechanisms (drugs and booze) and a broken heart (dave!) and like, zero concern over his well-being? Yes. But I also love Five. An angry, flighty, control-freak who is a trained assassin (the best one, of course) and a complex about his family (cough vanya)? Also yes.
Stiles (Teen Wolf, TV show)
Havent seen a whole lot of the show. I hate all the female characters, period. But I know he gets possessed by the nogitsune, this like ancient mummy demon thats evil, and Stiles suffers for it and has like a double, evil personality that feeds of chaos and pain?? Love it. I watch clips on youtube sometimes but really dont wanna watch the show bc of Lydia and the other one.
Mae Martin (Feel Good, TV show)
Binged the whole show in one night. They used to have issues with cocaine, and they have like a drug spree followed by self-hatred, and I gotta respect. I'd love to see them really struggle with drugs more, and maybe meet some bad influences and spiral a little.
John Mulaney (stand-up comedian)
He used to do hard drugs and get blacked-out drunk in college (or so he says on his netflix specials) and I mean I love it. He looks twelve years old, so it doesnt fit his vibe at all. Yes, I know he's a real person. He's only on the list because he used to do that drug and alcohol shit, and I can appreciate imagining that. I don't think i crave actual whump about him.

I was also trying to think of what media I saw as a children that had whumpy moments because I have a suspicion certain things I write about come from influences from that time
The whole mer cannibalism thing, for example, seem to come from nowhere, but that Sleeping Beauty story plus all the fairytales with cannibalism and even those old cartoons when a crocodile or a witch would trick the protagonist into a bath that was actually a cooking pot
Old cartoons where great because you had those damsels in distress (sexist, I know, but it’s whumpy and me being a girl who sees herself as the whumpee, I love to think the what ifs)
Then, I don’t know if it counts but the X-Men and Project Zeta and such taught me the wonders of “not really human” - someone who can look like and act as a human but for some reason is not. Not something directly whumpy but playing with the emotional pain I can cause these characters is one of the basis of my whump writing (and writing in general... I am autistic, these characters are relatable ok!)
Alladin has some whumpy moments like when they try to assassinate prince Ali or when Jasmine is put inside that hourglasses. The Incredibles has that whole thing where Syndrome traps the Incredibles and there is that scene in that Bob snaps and grabs Mirage and threaten to break her in half, that gives me whumperflies. There’s also that Sinbad movie in which he is arrested but his friend takes his place and if he can find whatever treasure and returns it they are both free. If he can’t find it but returns, he is sentenced to death. If he doesn’t, his friend dies instead. It was Good.

Taking a Step Back
This is a really simple thing you can do just to give readers good faith in you. Show that you know what you’re writing is dark and messed up. Show your understanding for the issues you’re handling and that they’re complicated. It might seem self-evident, but when you’re writing the really dark stuff, or unhealthy relationships, or institutionalised whump, you can inadvertently create the impression that you just think it’s fun. The fact that it’s fiction does not automatically absolve you. Show that you care about doing it right.
I wanted to write a quick bit of clarification on this section of my Whumping Safely 101 guide. From what I’ve seen in the responses, this is the part that people find most confusing or contentious.
1. There is a genuine need for this.
I did not make up this concern. This is something that I have experienced, and others alongside me. Many people have suggested their reader should be able to safely assume they don’t condone the actions of their villains, or the poor choices of their protagonists, but this is not the case. If you’re writing something heavy and complex, such as noncon, show respect for the seriousness of the issue. Some things are too dark to be treated like ‘just another kind of whump’.
2. Mainstream media influences this need.
If you write, for example, a whumper-whumpee ship, it is important to make it clear that you, the author, know that this is not aspirational. That this is not and cannot be healthy. Often, such relationships are depicted as happy endings in media. If you’ve been in the right fandoms, you’ll have seen things go down, e.g. with the Joker and Harley Quinn, or Rey and Kylo Ren. Other aspects of whump are not exempt from this. Again, just because it’s fictional doesn’t mean you are divorced from reality. Pay respect to the connotations.
3. Yes, it is hurtful to be misunderstood.
I wish it was not necessary to place the burden of proof on the writer. But the fact remains that sometimes the perspectives we take, or just the content we write, can be unsettling. They can play with morals and use unreliable narrators. This can make a reader feel unsafe. This can make a reader feel like you are oversimplifying or romanticising something that hits close to home.
When I wrote ‘show that you care’, I was trying to put across that taking a step back and writing something, anything meta about your fics, demonstrates that you know you’re writing something dark, disturbing or uncomfortably similar to real life. Show that awareness. It might not feel necessary, but the guide is about helping your readers feel safe. Not telling them that they should already.
