One thing that kinda bothered me in aftg is how the hell wasn't andrew adopted when he was a baby. I mean, he was a white, blond, light eyed baby boy. That's like everything people want when they are adopting. When he got older its understandable, but during those first couple of years? I know it's probs for plot reasons, but it still bugs me ya kno.

i totally get you!! but good news: from what i remember, he was fostered a bunch of times - the foxhole court wiki says he was in 12 foster homes by the time he was 13. so i assume that meant he had no trouble getting fostered when we was younger it just… didn���t work out. (he says he doesn’t remember any of them as good, so… rip. my poor baby boy.)

Incredibly Random and dumb Bats headcanons:

Damian always has a dog or cat in his bed at night, it's a small thing, but he feels protected and loved because of it.

All of the kids have a multitude of videos of Bruce falling down the stairs, mostly to laugh at but also to debunk the #brucewayneisbatman theories online.

The bats turn up to gotham pride to protect those at the parade, nobody's gonna fuck with you in broad daylight when batman, nightwing and red hood are right there watching.

Nightwing feeds the homeless regularly, talks to them and donates what he can to get them shelter for the night.

Jason is friends with an lady who runs a cafe and would often go to see her on patrol and get a donut for the road. It got bricked and looted one night, he found the guy and broke both his arms.

Jason's PTSD is a lot more severe than he would even let on, and because he can never really get professional help for what happened, he tends to distance himself when it's at its worst.

Dick is an awful singer, knows it and doesn't care, you are hearing bootylicious on patrol at 4am if you like it or not.

All the bats know how to sign, it proves to be great non-verbal communication on the job.

Damian hates himself because of the way he was created, and cries about it when alone.

Damian, deep down is scared of Talia.

Bruce gives incredible hugs, but Alfred's are God-tier.

Barbara will often stay silent on comms, listening and watching just to chime in at just the right point, calling whomever she's watching a dumbass for forgetting to mind the step.

Jason is an incredible guitarist.

Whenever they need something, they always pull out the D word. Bruce can't deny how it makes him feel when they call him dad.

Tim's room gets messy quickly but is always tidy again by the next day, it gives him something to do when he can't sleep.

Bruce will always freak out when one of the kids gets hurt on patrol, no matter how severe. He will stay with them until he is 1000% sure they are okay.

Alfred will also be kinda wiggin out but will never show it, instead opting to have painkillers and cookies at the ready.

Nightmares are an unfortunate regular thing in the house, thankfully, everyone is very accommodating to a sudden addition to their bed at 1am.

They have a system in place for the anniversaries of dead parents, and you can do whatever you want to on that day.

Joker has known who Batman is ever since the Jason incident, he just never felt the need to share it. it would ruin all the fun.

Tim cracks his knuckles super loud just to gross everyone else out.

Damian draws Dick the most.

Bruce cannot sleep in silence, TV or quiet music in the background, rain and wind when it happens, but never silence. it allows for too much to creep into your mind.

Jason's developed a super-knot for his boot laces when on patrol.

Batman is especially tough on any criminals that hurt children.

Tim has spent $340 on the sims and feels awful about it.

There is one particular family-run 24hr corner store in Gotham that is frequented by the bats at random hours of the night for energy bars and copious amounts of cherry coke.

The bats are banned from 5 McDonalds, 3KFCs a Chipotle and one 7/11.

If one of them is in your store, you can almost count on a Batman outside staring at them.

They all love Patrol in the rain even it it gets them sick. it feels more exhilarating.

They went to a theme park for Dick's birthday one year and shamelessly used Babs as a queue-jump, she loved it and now is a staple part of any visit.

Steph once broke her ankle running by the pool, resulting in a chorus of "don't do a steph" whenever anyone walks by the pool in the summer.

Timmy is Bi

Jason once tried to put out a cigarette on Damian.

Dick once showed up for patrol off his ass stoned and sang bohemian rhapsody while struggling to beat up a group of guys.

Dick also broke 3 toes trying to do a scorpion and promptly whacking his foot against the door frame.

Dick and Bruce got stoned together once and the outcome was a huge amount of fantastic baking, surprisingly.

Tim hates eggs.

Jason wears oxblood doc martens 24/7.

The girls taught the boys how to braid hair and ask them to do it for them because they turned out to be great at it.

Bruce's aftershave instantly either spikes their adrenaline or makes them calm down depending on who it is.

Bruce will still carry you like a baby and cuddle you when you have a nightmare or breakdown. Even when you're an adult.

Ice cream goes missing faster than it's bought in that house.

Jason comes round to cook once a week without fail, and everyone looks forward to it.

I guess i just don't really understand how adopting works in the us. I was just thinking that when he was really little, all wide eyed and stuff, before he became jaded and bad behaved, he would end up being adopted, instead of bounced between foster homes like he was...

ok now i’ve officially Looked Into Adoption (my search history is now definitely going to tell a story) BUT here’s a couple of pages i looked at in my brief research - x, x. the second one is a british charity but both sites seemed to cover domestic and international adopting so i’m kind of assuming they’re more general than specific… also as a disclaimer, this is super cursory research and the below is only gonna be my guesses. if anyone has actual knowledge of adoption and fostering in the us, please weigh in ahah

from what i can tell, adoption is no longer hugely common for young children, and andrew would have been adopted from birth, more or less. also if tilda went back for aaron it wouldn’t have been a stretch to guess she might want to come back for andrew, so the carers may have thought fostering was the best option.

additionally, adoption is a long long long process, and often starts before the baby is even born - but obviously tilda didn’t put the twins up until after they were born, thus limiting some opportunity for that. and following thatx it may have made more sense to just try to get him into a home rather than aim for adoption?

andddd the least cheerful one, adoption costs money. fostering earns you money. and given we already know andrew’s foster parents were shitty… well. that’d be a motivation for sure.

and of course, i know you mention the early on thing and i totally get you, but later on when he’d been labelled a problem child, people would have understandably been very hesitant to adopt. poor child.

Andrew, I thought about another short person thing you will probably identify with. Car seats. Car seats and the need to pull them as close to the steering wheel as they will go. And people mocking you for it when they drive your car after you did. Either that or saying how great it is to seat right behind you because there is so much room.

This is not as bad as driving manual and having to not only have the seat all the way up, but then sitting on the edge of it in order to push the clutch all the way in. -A
