.headcanon 01: poetry & the arts

Despite what one would judge from his true form’s appearance, Retuo has a gentle and scholarly soul. He has great affection and admiration for artisans as Zhongli mentioned and seen through his choosing of Kun Jun as his vessel. As Kun Jun he welcomed Zhongli, his supposed rival to Uncle Dai’s commission, and was thrilled to learn about someone equally knowledgeable in the subject. 

In Chinese the first line is said quite poetically. Much of his speech has a very descriptive, almost flowery flair to it. 

Even the recited poem at the end of the boss fight to make Jiu remember their time with Morax is a difficult form of Chinese poetry known as 四言律诗 ( or ‘four character poetry’ ). As the name states, it is a poem that consists of four characters per line. It is heavily implied that Retuo wrote the poem for Morax himself as both Kun Jun and Jiu remember the verses. 

As Kun Jun stated earlier: 

That poem survived the Erosion because it was something he held dear to him. Retuo also thanked Zhongli for his eyes and said ‘you wouldn’t know the yearning of a blind dragon, searching for the sun’; it coincides with the line in his poem ‘the sun ascends, as bright as jade’. Morax gave him eyes to see the light and became his ‘sun’ for a time. 

He can even come up with them on the fly about his feelings on meeting Morax once more:

‘In the wilderness, snow falls on a spring day. In an instant it will melt. Even where it is fleeting, and leaves no trace in your heart. Even where it will never fall again...’

He knows it's short and soon to be over ("in an instant it will melt"), the memory will not survive his Erosion ("fleeting and leaves no trace in your heart"), and he might never have another moment like this ("even it never fall again"...but all the same, he will treasure it as well as he can. 

Poetry is something Retuo enjoys and is a means of expressing himself when he feels that simple words would not suffice. 

As the Erosion began to eat away at his memories, Retuo inscribed them as poems into the walls of his Tianqiu Paalace in a futile attempt to not forget. But as he began to lose himself, it didn’t matter how much he wrote or clawed into the walls. Before his rampage in The Chasm, Retuo sealed off the cave with a roar that caused much of the surrounding areas to collapse. Much of the poetry has been worn away due to natural erosion over the years. 

Even if one does find the old adeptus’ home, the memories there too have faded.
