Fuck It Friday

Thank you @disasterbuckdiaz for tagging me!

Today I am working on a new project, one I will hopefully finish soon, inspired by the last two episodes. A Hen-centric fic, focused on the aftermath of everything this season so far, particularly her friendships.

“Hey, Hen,” he says, blue eyes wide and sad and inhabiting that vaguely Disney cartoon quality that really is too much power to put in the hands of any man. 

“What’s going on?” She asks. 

“Uh,” Buck furrows his brows and looks at his shoes. “I-I didn’t sleep to well last night, thinking about, uh, everything that’s happened, and it-it occurred to me that even though I was kind of under the impression that you’re probably mostly pissed at Chimney, I think I probably really owe you an apology, too.”

Well. 

Both parts of that final statement are true. 

As disappointed and disheartened as she is by the lack of faith coming from Eddie and Buck, the suggestion that she might have made the wrong choice - when she knows she didn’t - the real kicker of it had been Chim. Accusing her of asking him to lie for him. Being a stubborn ass in that helicopter. Doing the opposite for her of what she’s always done for him. Besides, it’s not like Eddie and Buck were here in the before Bobby part of her time with the 118. Chim knows what they don’t. And that makes the betrayal worse. 

“Look,” Buck sighs when Hen doesn’t reply quickly. “Tell me to go to hell, and leave you be. I will. But, if-if you could hear me out-”

“Coffee or tea?” Hen interrupts him.

“Uh, what?” 

“Would you like coffee or tea?” Hen asks. “Because I don’t think my stomach can handle another coffee today, so I’ll be making a cup of peppermint.”

Buck swallows. “Y-yeah, peppermint sounds great. Thank you.”

Not having a good day idk my mental health is just shitty but whatever. I’m working on a 5+1 pet names fic inspired by a ficlet I wrote which is accidentally becoming more like 10+1. Anyway enjoy.

“The last time I used pet names was with Shannon, she was particularly fond of cariño and princess,” Eddie chimes in.

“I would pay to see the look on Tommy’s face if you call him princess,” Hen adds.

Buck gives Hen a look. “How much?” He asks seriously.

Hen raises her eyebrows before pursing her lips in thought. “10 bucks,” she replies after a moment.

Buck frowns. “There’s only one of me,” he jokes.

Hen rolls her eyes. “Five bucks,” she says unimpressed, turning and walking away.

“Wait! No no I’ll take the ten!” He exclaims following her down the steps.

“Hey princess,” Buck says when he sees Tommy walking into the firehouse. Buck leans forward for a kiss but Tommy pulls back before he has the chance.

“What did you just call me?” Tommy asks, blinking repeatedly.

“Hmm, princess?” Buck replies coyly.

“Evan, you’re calling this,” Tommy gestures up and down, “princess?”

Buck nods appreciatively, enjoying the excuse to look his boyfriend up and down, relishing in the way his Henley fits snug on his chest, the shape of his tits evident through the material. “Would you prefer, tank?”

Hen cackles in the distance.

Happy weekend everyone! So many loose ends tied up....except *eyes* oh I'm loving the season so far. Back with more fic that I've read and loved this week, with a mix of short one shots and longer stories. As always you can find previous rec lists here. Some light spoilers for the season.

I did think, let’s go about this slowly by @pelorsdyke is a short and insightful peek into Karen's mindset at the start of hers and Hen's relationship, as she overcomes her own fears of adhering to stereotype and committing too hard and too fast. But she finds a way to balance her heart's wants with her mind's eye, and find a intimacy she can build on along the way.

I didn't know (that it could be good) by @rainbow-nerdss 'Eddie lets himself into Buck's apartment unannounced, and finds him in a compromising position. That should be nothing, just something to laugh about down the line, except afterwards, it's like a switch has flipped, and neither of them can get it out of their minds. The solution? They need to get it out of their systems.' Best friends that secretly hook up and don't question it because it feels good and that's their favourite person and nothing has to change right? trope my beloved. God this fic is absolutely swoonworthy, and I'm still giving it hearteyes for days. Do yourself a favour and read it right now.

please, please, please by @bookinit02 'So, a widower walks into a bar, and he hasn’t been held by someone he loves in years.' A touch starved Eddie starving for Buck's touch in particular! In which Buck subconsciously stops casually touching Eddie after he comes out, and Eddie notices and is not happy about it. Circa S7/S8, they soon set out to resolve the issue. Such a great exploration of a complicated yearning, and then I particularly loved their flirtatious bickering in this fic because it was so very very them and endearing as hell.

kerosene by @roguebuck is almost the flipside...a post 7x06 fic starting from the wedding, in which Buck isn't sure why 'nothing's going to change' unsettles him so much and why he can't get Eddie out of his head...even at the most inopportune times. But sometimes all it takes to make a change is for someone to pour the gas and light a match...and this fic sure does that!

the city is a jungle and i’m a beast by @putanauhere just in time for canon!werewolf Eddie, this is such a brilliant fic that really immersed me in the story, and was so well thought out to make the werewolf lore fit into 911verse smoothly. Eddie and his platoon were bit by a werewolf during his time in the army, and so as long as he's been with the 118 he's been keeping a secret. When a call to a magick shop goes awry, Buck's infodumping on the habits of wolves meets Eddie's reluctance to concede to superstition...but he's mostly desperate to hide. When Buck follows him to his safe house, things soon go awry, and together they must learn to live with the consequences. Perfect spooky season fic, and really emotional as well.

Any Other Way by @cal-daisies-and-briars I have been meaning to read this for weeks and am so glad I finally have! This is a fic where Eddie and Buck's lives take on each other's paths - an unattached and openly gay Eddie going on an aimless teenage wanderlust after his high school girlfriend left suddenly, and Buck signing up to the army to spite his parents. Then one day Eddie runs into Shannon at the grocery store...with a young boy at her side. This is a really wonderful fic about a lifechanging secret and stepping up to parenthood, overcoming fears and letting your guard down. I loved how despite the narrative switcheroo, their motivations remain true to themselves and their family at the core.

the sound of the saw (must be known by the tree) by @absolutelybifurious a fic inspired by the last episode of Grey's Anatomy I ever watched lmao. Eddie blames himself for Chris leaving, but Buck is frustrated that the time has stretched out so long, and is encouraging him to go get him. But Eddie doesn't want to hear it and they part on rocky ground with Eddie boarding a plane to El Paso for some wildfire training. When Buck receives a voicemail, the world shifts from under his feet, and the 118 race to save Eddie. This was passionate and angsty and the love sings off the page.

Buck hears the wolf whistle and turns to see the man who appreciatively looks at the place where Buck’s ball landed.

“Rising NFL star?” 

Buck chuckles, “I’m a little too old to be a rising star, but I once almost got the scholarship because of how I played.”

“Almost?”

“Wasn’t interested in that college,” Buck shrugs. “Wasn’t interested in colleges at all. Or interested in becoming professional too to go there anyway.”

“I see,” the man nods and offers his hand. “Sal Deluca.”

“Evan Buckley,” Buck shakes the hand smiling at the man, who holds his ball in question and Buck nods, catching the pass and then passing back. “People call me Buck.”

“Nice to meet you, Buck,” Sal smiles and points to his shirt. “Which station?”

“118, you?”

“147. But I worked at 118 before. Are Howie and Hen still working?” Sal passes again, but this time it’s harder to catch. Buck smirks at the little challenge he sees in his new acquaintance’s eyes. Ohm finally someone who really can throw football.

“Yeah they are,” he throws the ball harder now too,so hard that Sal has to run back a little to catch it and hold it to his chest.

“Tell them I said hi,” the man this time he throws the ball in the direction of the goal and then Buck whistles.

“And who’s the rising star, huh?”

Sal laughs and they run to take their footballs back. 

“No, kid, if you’re too old to be the rising star I definitely won't be one. More like a fading star.”

Now it’s Buck who’s laughing. 

…

“Are you free from the shift tomorrow too?”Sal asks him when they are walking to their cars. “Me and several guys from 147 and 136 gonna play football at six tomorrow. We are down one person. Wanna join?”

“Hell, yeah,” Buck nods, not wanting to lose the possible chance of a new friendship with a funny man, who plays football on the same level as him, and some more firefighters. It was a moment since Buck could find someone to actually play. 

Maybe it can help him to get over thoughts about Tommy. He just needs new friends he has the same hobbies with. And he really should do hobbies he likes more.

“Cool,” Sal smiles, stopping near his Jeep, and takes his phone out. “Here, put your number I’ll text you details.”

After Buck does exactly that, they exchange pleasantries and banter about each other's football skills, discuss the advantages of having a jeep and finally disperse when the sky is illuminated by the orange light of the setting sun.

I'm getting to everyone's snippets tonight, I promise! I'm a few days behind cause lectures have just started up again 😬 tagged for Tuesday by @thewolvesof1998 and @elvensorceress thank you friends 🫶. Figured I should probably get cracking on my 7x06 spec fic before the episode comes out so please enjoy a bit of Buck getting roasted by his best friend and boyfriend.

Eddie frowns, looking a little confused. “I thought you guys were all good?” “We are,” Buck replies, his eyes never leaving his parents as he watches them greet guests, both looking the brightest and bubbliest he’s seen them in years. From afar he’s sure they look like a regular, happy older couple enjoying their daughter’s wedding, but Buck can’t hide the way seeing them still makes his gut twist uncomfortably. Tommy snorts beside him, bringing him back to reality. “Except Evan decided it was a good idea not to mention me until today” Eddie does a little double take, his eyebrows shooting up into his hairline. “Wait, you haven’t told them yet?” “I’m gonna go find Denny,” Christopher announces, bored of listening to the adults. “Is that okay, Dad?” “Yeah, of course bud. See you in a bit,” Eddie says, ruffling Christopher’s hair. The three of them watch as he shoots off, making his way towards Hen, Karen and Denny as fast as his legs can carry him. When he’s safely out of earshot, Eddie rounds on Buck again, fixing him with an incredulous look. “Seriously, Buck, in what world did you think springing this on them today was a good idea?” “That’s what I said!” Tommy says, flicking Buck a smirk as he squeezes his side. “Hey, you’re meant to be on my side!” Buck protests, elbowing Tommy in the ribs, but it’s all forgiven when Tommy brushes a light kiss against Buck’s temple.  “And I didn’t want to tell them in person, I thought doing it like this would be… easier,” Buck finishes lamely, aware of how delusional he’s sounding. “Uh huh, cause telling your parents big, life changing things has always been easy in person hasn’t it,” Eddie deadpans, crossing his arms over his chest and raising his eyebrow at Buck in a way that screams you’re an idiot and you know it. “Listen, I wasn’t exactly thinking -” “Clearly,” Tommy and Eddie say in unison, turning to one another with shit-eating grins as Buck gives them both a flat look, before continuing.  “- but, I didn’t want them to gripe at me and say they would have rather heard it face to face than from behind a phone.” “I think they probably would have had a go at you either way, honestly,” Eddie says with a sympathetic shrug, and he reaches over to squeeze Buck’s shoulder. Buck sighs and burrows closer into Tommy’s side, resting his head on his boyfriend’s shoulder. Tommy runs his hand down Buck’s spine, rubbing at each spinous process as he encourages Buck to relax. Buck softens a little, biting back a whine as Tommy nuzzles his nose against Buck’s hairline.  “You’re probably right,” he admits with a sigh. He’d really wanted nothing more than to heal his relationship with his parents but turns out it takes more than a little lightning strike and some shitty therapy sessions to mend years of trauma.

I’ll talk a little bit about a trio of additional behemoths who are set to appear in my webcomic then! I don’t have any art of them unfortunately, but I can use screenshots from the Final Fantasy games to compensate!

✨Their names are Briar-Hen (or just Briar), Echo, and Quail! Briar-Hen in particular got his name from the Briar Hens in Slime Rancher!

✨ Briar-Hen was inspired by the FFXIV behemoth model, Echo was inspired by the baby behemoth minion, and Quail was inspired by the behemoth heir minion!

✨ Briar-Hen is a full grown adult behemoth who takes care of the two pups: Echo and Quail. He acts as an older brother/father figure to the pups, taking care of them and ensuring they don’t get into too much trouble (which can certainly happen every now and then as Quail is the leader of the twins who likes to explore a lot lmao)

Fic Update: like a bird stealing bread out from under your nose

For chapter three, I swear life is not as terrible.

Summary:

Hen helps Eddie make a huge forward step.

Snippet:

“But it doesn’t matter now who is to blame,” Hen says. “I think what matters is that you need help.”

Eddie nods shallowly. “Bobby told me I have to go back to therapy. He’s probably right.”

“Mhm,” Hen nods. “And I think, personally, that you need to address why you really kissed Buck.”

Which means, she knows that it wasn’t just because Buck was there and a set of lips. 

Eddie groans. “That’s not what I’m putting at the top of the therapy list, Hen. I should probably worry more about getting my son back then…”

He trails off, struggling to say any of it out loud.

“Then what, Eddie?” Hen prompts softly.

“Then a sudden, onset sexuality crisis! I don’t know!” 

Hen nods. She takes another sip from her glass of ice and soda, then folds her hands in front of her on her dining room table. 

“I am going to give you tougher love than Buck or even Bobby probably gives you, okay? I think you need to hear it.”

Ramon doesn’t say anything to him on his way into the kitchen, so Buck turns back to the section on fried foods, looking for a dish to bring to his birthday barbeque. He stops again when he hears Ramon muttering to himself in Spanish. Buck catches the tail end of it – something about not being able to find the trash can?  “Under the counter,” Buck calls out absentmindedly, finger pausing on a recipe for fried okra. Bingo.  Ramon pokes his head through the kitchen door and looks at him in surprise. “You understand Spanish?” “Oh, yeah,” Buck says awkwardly. “I can’t speak it very well, and my accent’s terrible. But I lived in Peru for a little while, picked up a few words here and there. And Eddie and Chris are always watching their telenovelas, so I thought I’d try to learn so I can actually follow along.” He shrugs, eyes flitting back to his book. “I’m not fluent yet, but I’d like to be, someday.”  “Hmm,” Ramon says, expression inscrutable. “Well, thank you, Buck.”  He disappears back into the kitchen, and Buck figures that's the end of it, going back to mentally calculating the amount of okra he’ll need to buy to feed everyone coming to his party. God, he really misses his math powers sometimes. Unfortunately, Buck's attempt to will his abilities back into existence doesn't work. They don't miraculously come back, so he gives up and pulls out his phone to calculate it for him. Twenty seven people will be coming, and if he takes into account food allergies and personal tastes plus portion sizes, that should amount to— "May I sit?" Ramon is standing in front of him, carrying a metal tin.

I have eased back on working NFL Buck because I am absolutely swamped with school. I have started clinic rounds and somehow the classwork has doubled for the next set of courses. Which holy crap. So a lot of my days are for studying, homework, and quizzes. Add on being a mom/house wife and yea, not a ton of time to work on my favorite WIP. But I am making time on Thursday to watch the newest 9-1-1 episodes and write codas, because I started them in the final episodes of season 6 and really enjoyed it! So I made a goal to make a coda for most if not all of season 7 episodes! 2/2! I will try my absolute damnest to get some work into NFL Buck because it is my baby and I know how much it is beloved. 7x02 Coda

“We-I…” Buck tries to find the right words again, but he has no idea what they should be.  He doesn’t know if he should be defending himself along with Eddie and Chimney, proclaim that they were just being honest with internal affairs. Or if he should defend Hen and the betrayal she felt when they couldn’t back her up.

Rock and a hard place, with Buck being squeezed tightly in between.

Chimney left the locker-room soon after Hen, with the passing false hope comment, “She’ll come around.”  His phone was half-way to his ear before disappearing around the ladder truck, most likely spilling the entire ordeal to Maddie.

Buck slumps back down on the bench and leans his head against the lockers, closing his eyes with a defeated sigh. Still standing close by, Buck hears Eddie hum in agreement. Yea, tonight was very much a downer.

“We should have had her back.” Buck finally says.

He feels additional weight added to bench and pressing warmth along his arm and thigh when Eddie sits beside him. “We did. We just all put our foots in our mouths trying to show her.” He assured.  He gives Buck knee a gentle squeeze, “You more than me with that whole ‘right call’ comment and wanting to give Captain Collier’s a hard time.”

Buck groans in embarrassment, “I was trying and horribly failing to lighten the mood.”

“The mood was dead on arrival; you had no chance.” Eddie chuckles.

They both go silent, stewing in the hurt emotions left behind by Hen and Chimney, mixing with their own anxiety and worry. It kind of reminds Buck of the last time Hen was captain and that man died at the happiness convention. God that felt like so long ago, when really is less than a year.  Yet here they all are, questioning themselves on the job after losing a patient and without Bobby’s steady leadership to help guide them through it.

Buck could only hope this didn’t send him or anyone else on the team into a spiral of questioning their purpose in life. And he really hoped it didn’t lead to another brush with death, for anyone of them.

The hand on Buck’s knee never left and gave another squeeze, pulling him from his past wallows and has his eyes fluttering open. He looks over at Eddie and sees an understanding smile gracing his lips. “That man’s death isn’t on us. We we’re working on the worst of the crash, and we saved that girl and her mother.  Hen made the right call, the same one Bobby would have made and when those lab results concur with her story, she’ll be back, and we’ll find a way to make it up to her.”

Buck takes a moment to let Eddie’s words sink it and pull him from the beginnings of a self-deprecating spiral. He did his job, he gave his facts of the event truthfully, and Hen would come around. In all regards, Buck just needed to learn how not to put his foot in his mouth, because at the moment it really was a nasty taste.

Slowly most of the tension that had built up during Hen’s confrontation eases away and Eddie felt it through the press of his shoulder into Buck’s, “That has to be a record.” He comments before getting to his feet and reaching a hand out.

Buck doesn’t even hesitate and tries his damnest not to flush too red as Eddie hauls him to his feet with little to no effort. The man has a girlfriend and Buck was done chasing. “Uh yea. Turns out when you stop trying to search for the life’s great moments and instead live in them, internal spiraling is easier to pull out of.” He explains. Eddie also is a big contributor, but Buck isn’t going to admit that to said man.

“Well… At least those self-help books will make good kindling for the next campfire.” Eddie cackles and Buck swats at his shoulder which only makes him laugh harder.

Eventually Buck joins in and the pit of dread dwindles further. He embraces this moment and knows eventually everything is going to be okay.
