WOLF PACK BEAT ISLANDERS ON 10-19
By: Jason Alwang, Howlings HARTFORD, CT—Brett Berard scored 1:38 into overtime, and Bo Groulx recorded a four-point game (2g - 2a) as the Hartford Wolf Pack won a thriller at the XL Center against their intra-state rivals, the Bridgeport Islanders. In overtime, the Wolf Pack received a 4-on-3 after the Islanders' Marc Gatcomb was called for boarding as regulation ended. Bedard one-timed a pass from Casey Fitzgerald and blasted it past Marcus Hogberg for the victory. For Bedard, it marked his fourth goal in the season's first three games. “There really is no position to that point of the game,” Bedard said of the overtime goal. “But a goal is a goal, so it was pretty exciting.” In the third period, after the Islanders scored a game-tying, power-play goal, exactly a minute later, Adam Sykora tallied his first of the season on a puck loose in the crease off a rebound to give the Wolfpack a 4-3 lead with 6:02 left to play. The Islanders found the equalizer with 2:12 remaining when Fredrik Karlstrom scored his second goal of the game, beating Pack starter Dylan Garand to his right. The first period saw the Wolf Pack score the game's first goal at 14:13 off a takeaway in the offensive zone. Alex Belzile went to the middle of the two circles and found Giroux, who buried it past Hogberg. The lead didn't last long. 37 seconds later, the Islanders answered back when Karlstrom scored his first of the season after getting past the Wolf Pack defense and cut down the middle of the offensive zone on passes from Liam Foudy and Matthew Maggio. The Islanders scored a goal 11:39 into the second when Wyatt Newpower sped his way to the net and beat Garand off passes from Maggio and Foudy, who earned their second assists. Just 16 seconds after the Islanders took the lead, Cole Bardreau was whistled for holding, sending the Pack back on the power play. Thirty seconds later, the Pack tied the game, with Giroux scoring his second at 12:26 of the middle period. Casey Fitzgerald and Alex Belzile earned the helpers. “The power play was maybe not as sharp as it was yesterday, but it showed up when we needed it the most.” Head Coach Grant Potulyn said of the team’s power play. Over three minutes later, at 15:53, the Wolf Pack scored again. Beard made it his third of the season after a series of shots for the Pack that had Hogberg scrambling before the puck went to the back of the net and a 3-2 Pack lead. Garand recorded 30 saves in the win. The Wolf Pack and Islanders will play again Sunday in a rematch, this time in Bridgeport. The Wolf Pack record improves to 2-0-0-1, and they look to keep their point streak alive. HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOWLINGS Read the full article

Potential 2022 US World Juniors Hockey Team: In Case We Still Have A Country
To say the least, it’s been a hectic week for Americans in international hockey. On Tuesday evening, the nation won its sixth gold medal in theWorld Juniorswith a dramatic, 2-0 victory over Canada. A gang of insurrectionists stormed into the United States Capitol around 12 hours later, ending a 200-year record of peaceful power transitions. So it’s a bit of a mixed bag all in all. Fortunately, IIHF president Rene Fasel reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to hosting tournaments in both the United States and Belarus later this year, indicating that a functioning democracy is not a deal breaker.
With that in mind, we shift our focus to a possible US World Junior team in 2022, just in case. The US will return to Edmonton to defend their gold title with players born in 2002 and younger. Six players from the gold medalists will return, leaving a large number of roster slots open for the United States to fill.
The second elephant in the room for next year’s lineup is the continuing coronavirus epidemic, which isn’t the man with elephant horns marching through the Senate chamber. As much as the virus caused havoc on this year’s roster, losing a few of players their chance at a gold medal, I believe we may see even more of an impact next year. When the virus shut down USA Hockey’s summer camp last year, I argued that the US was in a strong position since their roster was largely set. They had a lot of returning players and had seen enough from everyone else that most of the remaining slots could be readily filled.
The next year will be more challenging. There are just six returnees, and most of the rest of the team hasn’t played enough hockey in the last year to form views. The US will likely have summer camps, but I still believe it is a poor substitute for being in the rink and seeing someone play important games. This is going to be a tough squad to put together.
Here’s my best estimate at what a US World Junior squad could look like next year.
Best guesses: Matty Beniers*, Brett Berard*, Landon Slaggert*, Thomas Bordeleau, Luke Tuch, Ty Smilanic, Dylan Peterson, Mackie Samoskevich, Hunter McKown, Cross Hanas, Chaz Lucius, Sasha Pastujov, Justin Janicke
Matt Coronato, Blake Biondi, Jackson Hallum, Jack Smith, Jackson Kunz, Antonio Stranges, Carson Bantle, Chase Yoder, Joe Miller, Wyatt Schingoethe, Chase Bradley, Dylan Duke, Matthew Knies, Jeremy Willmer, Chase Stillman, Caden Brown, Connor Kurth, Hunter Strand, Isaac Howard, Maddox Fleming, Frank Nazar, Ryan St. Louis, Jack Devine, Red Savage, Jack Hughes, Mark Estapa, Avery
With the great ‘01 class aging out, there is clearly a lot of scoring to replace. They return three players who played important roles on the gold-medal-winning squad, albeit not necessarily scoring ones. Thomas Bordeleau would have been on the squad as well, but was unable to participate owing to Covid limitations, which we hope to resolve before next year.
Beniers has a chance of getting selected early enough, particularly given how well he performed in this tournament, that he gets signed immediately and plays in the NHL next year, rendering him ineligible. However, I believe the odds are slim.
I’m fairly confident about the top eight names on my Best Guess list. There will be some '03s who make it as well, with Lucius and Pastujov being the early front-runners. Due to a dearth of high-end scoring in the 2002 age group, the US may need them to be significant offensive players. Also, I haven’t watched them play yet, but there may be a chance for a '04 from the NTDP squad—which seems to be a very good group—to earn their way into the team.
Because there are so few youngsters in the qualifying age group playing college hockey at this time, the bottom few roster slots are more difficult to fill. I went with McKown, who didn’t contribute much with the NTDP U18s but has looked excellent so far at Colorado College. However, there is the possibility for someone in the USHL right now to have a great end to the season and a solid start to their collegiate career next fall, which would strengthen their case.

WOLF PACK BLANKED BY ISLANDERS 4-0 IN WEEKEND FINALE BRIDGEPORT, CT – The Hartford Wolf Pack were shut out for the first time this season on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 4-0 decision to the rival Bridgeport Islanders at Total Mortgage Arena. Despite the loss, the Wolf Pack concluded the season's first three-in-three weekend with a winning 2-1-0-0 record. The physicality from Saturday night’s contest carried over into the first period of Sunday’s affair, as numerous post-whistle scrums populated the frame. However, the Islanders received the only power play, getting an advantage 9:35 into the stanza. The Wolf Pack’s penalty kill stood firm, limiting the looks for the Islanders. The Wolf Pack took the better shots in the first 20 minutes, outshooting the Islanders 8-4. Louis Domingue and Jakub Skarek were sharp in the period, but they kept it 0-0. The Wolf Pack earned their second power play of the hockey game at 5:40 of the middle stanza when Eetu Liukas was whistled for hooking. Just over a minute into the power play, the ice would finally be broken in the game by a surprising culprit. A turnover inside the offensive zone sprung Brian Pinho in on a two-on-one with Liam Foudy. Pinho elected to shoot from the left-wing side, rocketing a shot by Domingue for his second goal of the season at 6:59. Bridgeport's goal was their second shorthanded marker this season. With a scrum developing behind the play, Alex Jeffries extended the lead at 10:16 when he beat Domingue from the right-wing circle for his third goal of the season and his second of the weekend. Marshall Warren and Skarek picked up the assists on the goal, with the netminder’s helper being the first of his career. Marc Gatcomb ended a flurry of three goals in 5:51 for the Islanders when he tucked home his first with the club at 12:44. Wyatt Newpower connected with Gatcomb streaking down the left-wing side. He then went to the backhand and snuck his shot by Domingue. The Islanders defended their lead throughout the third period, outshooting the Wolf Pack 12-6. William Dufour put an exclamation point on the victory with his first goal of the season at 18:21, electing to shoot on a two-on-one to make it 4-0 for the Islanders. Skarek made 24 saves to collect his first victory and shutout of the season.
