August Books

1. Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer

. . . 3/10. One of those points is purely for the insight on Rosalie and Jasper's backstories and the other two points is Alice Cullen. I detest the Twilight series so very much and the only thing keeping me going is Alice. I hate how Jacob was turned into. . . Whoever he is now. He's not the same Jacob from the first/second books. I didn't really like him then either, but did he have to be turned into such a creep? Bella was insufferable as always, as was Edward. Stan Alice, I love her and also we're the same height (4'10) and we love that.

2. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer

2/10. Again, it's apart of Twilight. Also, why does my mother have everything Twilight related? Anyways, I felt this was unneeded and I wish we were given a book like this from Riley's point of view. I feel as if it would've been more interesting than a character who only said her name and then a few sentences (maybe a paragraph or two?) about how she didn't know stuff and then was killed. I think seeing Victoria's manipulation being done to Riley would've been much more interesting to read. However, this is not me saying "Oh please Mrs. Meyer, write more!" She very much so does not need to do that.

Note for books 3., 4., and 5.; I read them at the same time. It was a strange week of reading.

3. Chainsaw Man Buddy Stories by Tatsuki Fujimoto and Sakaku Hishikawa

7.5/10. Love me some chainsaw man. I miss Angel and Kobeni though, so I couldn't give it an 8. Other than that, it was well written and I tend to take issue with short stories branching off from mangas because a lot of the ones I read in the past seem to get the characters wrong in the. . . word-ification of them, but I have no such complaint here on that. Power was still Power-ing and Aki was the same exhausted single mother Hayakawa that he's always been.

4. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

9.7/10. I loved it from start to finish. Some bits were even relatable (don't worry, none of the. . . bad(? questionable?) bits). I liked experiencing the slow mental decline and then the very end were Esther seems to be doing better. It was a bit saddening to find out that Plath died not even a month after this book was published, but I do hope that whatever afterlife there may or may not be, that Sylvia Plath is proud of what she's done and how far this novel has come.

5. Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer

2/10. 2 points are for Jasper and Alice. I hated every minute of this. I honestly wish I had something nice to say other than "It had Alice Cullen and Jasper Hale" but alas, I can not. Okay the wedding seemed cute but other than that it was like your typical white teenage boy. No redeeming qualities. Carlisle and Esme were great as always, but I have mommy/daddy issues so sorry<3

6. Chainsaw Man Volumes 10 and 11

9/10, still upset about Angel's death (even though I read it months ago), bur at least Kobeni is alive and well (. . . As well as she can be). Also, Makima was great. Do I think she was a good person? No. Do I love her as a villain? Absolutely. However, I'll never forgive her (or Fujimoto) for Angel. Rip.

7. The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

7/10. Rather slow paced, but a good solid plot. Unfortunately, I did clock Bogdin (or whatever his name was) as Tony's murderer. . . pretty much as soon as the murder happened, so reading the truth at the end didn't do much. Also, I assumed that Penny would've have something to do with one of the murders, considering you don't normally have a character like her and her husband, John, without them having some secret in their pasts. Overall pretty good though.

8. Death Note Volumes 11-12

8.5/10. Glad Light finally got what was coming to him. I hated that man. Misa deserved so much better (coughMEcough). Rip Matt and Mello though. Also, I don't care what other people think, I like Near more than L. Do I think Near was smarter than L? I'm not sure, however I do believe he used his resources much better than L did. Also to anyone who may be like "Oh, well, Mello was smarter than Near-" shush. I loved both of them, but I'm autistic so Near takes forst place for me. If Near has one fan, it is me. If he has no fans, I am dead.

9. Death Note Volume 13: How to Read

5/10. These sorts of books don't tend to interest me, however some content was good so it felt wrong to rate it anything under 5. That being said, I also couldn't rate it anything above 5 because. . . I don't know.

10. Death Note Short Stories

6/10. Near<3 I was happy. Overall entertaining, but ultimately nothing special in my opinion.

11. Death Note: Another Note The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases

7/10. The Death Note fan in me is tired of Death Note. I still enjoyed it, it was well written, the "L's a dom" part killed me. I think if I read it a few months ago it would've been rated higher, but alas.

12. Scott Pilgrim Comics (1-6)

6.5/10. Kim Pine, my love<3 snd wallace<3 really I have no commentary. It was Scott Pilgrim, that says it all. Love the art style though.

13. Blue Period Volumes 1-5

9/10. I started watching the anime while in school and it inspired me in a way I haven't been in a long time. Watching just one episode gave me the motivation to actually try with art again, and I think I'll always be grateful for it. I bought the first 5 manga and after reading them I've fallen in love again. Unfortunately, at the time of writing this, I'm about to go off to college as an English major, but who knows, maybe English will be miserable to me and I'll switch to art. Either way, this manga has helped me a lot. I also see a lot of myself in many of the characters, Yotasuke in particular. It could be that I'm autistic, however I relate to his whole "art is all I have" thing. Although I'm what many would label a "jack of all trades," I only have one thing that I'm really passionate about and that I consider "mine." It was nice seeing someone else like that and it not being shown in a (purely) negative way. Plus, if he can make friends then that means I have a chance at it too, which makes me feel better about moving away for college.

14. Bungou Stray Dogs Volumes 8-13

6/10. Didn't hate them, but my original love for them is steadily declining. I'm also just trying to get through all of my manga at this point. . . I crave a novel so bad but still have to get through Ouran High School Host Club. Huuh.

Update: I never got to OHSHC since I went off to college and didn't want to bring manga with. Ouran will be "books I read whenever I visit on weekend" books.

15. I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

9/10. Do I need to even explain myself? Minus one point because at some points it was lowkey triggering for my. . . 3D, we'll say (don't worry, I'm okay and nothing happened), but it was so well written and just raw. Jennette is a talented writer in my opinion and I'm so sorry for everything she's gone through. She's much stronger than I am.

16. Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

7/10. Love me some Dostoyevsky. Anyways, I didn't hate it but I didn't exactly love it. Rating it under a 7 though makes me feel disloyal to my boy. Also, I finished this is in like 5 days. College is pretty easy right now (I say as literally an hour ago (around 5pm on August 31st) I was freaking out because I didn't know how to use the Canvas app).

today is the FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of the dnd campaign that i am a member of...!! so you know that a long rambling post is 100% in order.

five years ago, i played dnd for the very first time. (the date on that post says the 16th but that's because we played for like a billion hours and it went past midnight. because of course it did.) i remember being so, so nervous about it bc i seriously knew next to nothing about dnd. i had never watched any tabletop shows or anything and i was pretty much totally new to improv. i had no idea what a d20 was. i wish i was kidding. i truly just dived right in there. (fitting, i guess, since the character i play is a triton... LMFAO).

i'm so glad that decided to try it out regardless bc it has paid off in ways that i can't even begin to express fully... this campaign has accompanied me through so many life events - both the good and the bad - and i cherish each and every one of our Merry Band of Misfits' adventures. even when shit hit the fan and encounters got tense or chaotic in some form, it ended up making for some absolutely wonderful memories. i'm so glad that that reides - my lil blue fish lad!!! - is a member of the champions valoris.

reides is a character who is extremely near & dear to my heart and he has really awakened a creative side of me during these past five years. i always strive to be a player who can live up to him and do his character the justice that it deserves. even 'beyond' the campaign, i have so much fun writing stuff related to him, making crafts related to him, coming up with art ideas for him and getting comms of him... simply rotating him in my mind. you know how it is. really, i think it's impossible to sum up what reides means to me because he's just... REIDES!!! (also, peep the original token i had for him vs his current one... so cute. just so cute.) i seriously love all of the stuff that everyone else at the table makes for their own characters, too! playing pretend with your friends is fr one of the most healing experiences ever; we all gently feed off each other's creativity in such a lovely way. the passion we all have for our respective characters and the overall setting of the campaign is infectuous, and that passion - coupled with a whole lot of hard (yet fun!!!) work - has made for a story that is nothing short of legendary.

so i just wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude and say that i am honored to share a table with these incredibly creative individuals who have saved me in so many ways!!! big shoutouts to my fellow player, @mintflavoredwindows, who plays kilwin, the EXTREMELY blessed (teehee cleric joke) blond lad standing next to reides in that little chibi line-up of our characters (and who also takes the time to write AMAZING!!!!!! session synopses which all of us read time and time again; they are fr a lifesaver not to mention an immortalization of everything we've been through), our dungeon master of legend, @killdragons, who puts a TON of effort into the campaign setting as a whole and was the person who offered me a position in the campaign to begin with, @brewswain who has accompanied us on tons of different arcs with his absolutely incredible array of characters AND @sangre who has guest starred with his lovely miré (AND WHO HAS SUPPORTED THE CAMPAIGN SOOO MUCH IN GENERAL i love talking abt alethustria with you bree)!!! nathan (who plays jorah) and cj (who plays ashara and played slumberjack during the first season of the campaign) aren't on tumblr dot com so i can't give their urls a little shout-out in this post, but i'm still going to restate that being able to share in this adventure with them - both in-character and out-of-character - has been fucking incredible. the adventurers formerly known as the pog champions are eternal. viva la champions valoris. etc etc etc.

i also want to thank everyone who's supported reides / the campaign as a whole on the sidelines, bc you guys are absolutely amazing. and i can't possibly post this without showing off our lovely campaign wiki. bc it's iconic.

so we're gonna take this in levels with the classic "step outside the line and lose" type of getting out

Lvl 1: Horace & Alan vs Douglas, Tasha, and Perry

this would break down to Douglas vs Horace and Tasha and Perry vs Alan. Perry would 100% sacrifice Tasha to get Alan out lmao, then Horace beats her, then it ends in a (drumroll please) zero pointer

Douglas and Horace would absolutely fall out of the boundary at the same time, voiding the match lols

Lvl 2: Kaz & Oliver vs Leo

anywho, Leo would be able to beat Oli, but Kaz would get the drop on him after that, meaning the round goes to mm :)

Lvl 3 (actually getting hella serious): Adam, Chase, Bree, Taylor, & Logan vs Tecton, Gamma Girl, Blue Tornado, Megahertz, and Solar Flare

first off Kaz's soul leaves his body and the lr side throws him out on their way in lmao

it would be a struggle, but Adam beats Tecton. same with the next pairing, difficult but Chase beats Gamma Girl. once again the same: Bree beats Blue Tornado. these three have extremely similar years of training under their belts to the heroes, as well as being much younger and in their primes, so ultimately the rats win against them. Taylor vs Megahertz would be closest of all, but Megahertz would win. Solar Flare would also be able to beat Logan, she's more agile and experienced. however, Adam would be able to mop the floor with both heroes respectfully lmao, especially if Chase was there because he could shut Megahertz down electronically fairly easily

that leaves the rats for next round :D

Lvl 4: Skylar vs Adam, Bree, & Chase

so Sky would eventually be able to beat Bree, then Chase, leaving her and Adam. even though the rats are nearly impossible to beat on their own, let alone working as a team like they've been trained to do all their lives, Skylar is simply absolutely overpowered. Adam vs Skylar would have the result I mentioned before: a tie. both are stubborn and strong enough to back it up, meaning they'd go until they wear down to death lol, so this round ends in a tie

My Twilight Saga film ranking with my brief thoughts

1. New Moon - literally so amazing idc if it’s ‘boring’ it’s interesting to me. You get Volturi, Jacob NOT BEING CHARACTER ASSASSINATED, Alice being a mega slay, THAT ONE VICTORIA VS JACOB FIGHT THAT WAS SO GOOD and a banging soundtrack (like this film GAVE US ROSALYN)

2. Twilight - blue overlay supreme. It’s some cute stuff I won’t lie, most of the cast look so so good and cool. I want to go to there. Not much to say, it’s a classic and it’s worthy of everybody’s respect for the shit the crew had to do to make the film happen.

3. Breaking Dawn Part 2 - honestly Michael Sheen saved the film idc. It suffers because it took the worst book of the saga and split it so it’s boring but what’s good is WE FINALLY GET TO SEE THE SWANS CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS (we never see that)

4. Breaking Dawn Part 1 - it’s part Bellward fan service and half body horror. I can respect it, it’s boring yes but I do respect the dedication to Bellward. Like if you can have 2 scenes where the wife is happier with her husband’s sister and her best friend than the husband and imagine a better honeymoon than the one she has and STILL be so dedicated props to you. The wedding was the best scene in the film it was gorgeous. Why was regamond even born? Character holes for DAYS. Like dude how is Edward so scared to kiss Belle because ‘venom in system’ yet he shoots it casually up her cooch no condom? Confused a bit. I’m convinced that Ranaldo has some sort of immortal child quality and manipulated Bella because why would she think she’d be a perfect copy of Big Ed? Renepoopoo is a loser.

5. Eclipse - confusion the film. I don’t like the story much lmao so I didn’t have much fun. Everyone is such a dick in this book for no reason, and this is the character assassination of Jacob. Both love interests act like such dicks and that assault scene was painful. The taking the engine out of you car also isn’t great. And the ending is just…what? It’s like in Bree Tanner, the volturi guard made a deal with Vicky to attach them in 5 days. But the whole thing in Twilight is SHE DONT GIVE AF. She lives how she wants to live, she doesn’t let the Cullens or the Volturi define her and James. She just wants to eat and fuck her hubby. I’m just so confused.

“No, loving him wasn’t in my plans. It was a way to escape being taking back to that horrid man. That was all. The ultimate marriage of convenience. That was to be it. We were friends, yes.” She stretches and sits up a bit straighter in her rocking chair. “Friends and I did find him attractive. That helped.” A chuckle has her great- grandchildren looking up at her with grins. She has to recall they are mere children. Raised to know some things. She, their parents and grandparents, did teach them about their bodies and sex, as they got old enough to understand. But to imagine Granny and Pappy doing such, it is probably a stretch for them.

 

“We had a successful wedding night.” A few hands covered faces and a few nervous giggles erupt. “That is all I will say. The next day, we took a picnic out on the top of a Monro. He asked me, was it unusual, why was between us, what our touches brought out.” Claire-Julia, her eldest great-granddaughter, sighs at this. At twelve the lass was almost at the age where boys will start to be more then annoying. Claire smiles at her. “I told him it was often something like this but it was unusual. That was the beginning.”

 

She stretches again. At ninety, no chair is comfortable for long. “By the time he first takes me to the stones, I am conflicted. To return to my own time or stay with him. I knew I loved him when I chose him.” All the lasses sigh and the lads eyes shine with interest. She had sat her grandchildren down, thirty odd years ago, and told them the same tale. They knew of the stones, of the time traveling their Granny did, that their grandparents or Auntie Brianna and Uncle Rodger did, with Jeremy and Mandy. Those stories are part of their inheritance. Her and Jamie’s though, it is special. A story only she tells fully.  “By the time the upraising came, we had an unbreakable bound. To leave him, it was the hardest thing I ever did.”

 

“Grandma was in your uterus, eh?”  Paul, her Bree’s first grandson, asks.

All nod. Those twenty years are well known. Talk of cars, planes, and the like, are whispered among the lads. The lasses talk of washing machines and water that flows from the taps. She looks over at them with affection. The children that, ultimately, came from her and Jamie’s love.

 

“I never stopped loving him. Not for one moment. When I got a chance to go back,” she sighs, even fifty years later, she can still recall the tug of motherhood vs. the tug of her love for him. “it was hard to go back. Hard to leave Bree.”

 

“Auntie!” Amí Collette, Fergus and Marsali’s little granddaughter, calls out.

 

“Yes, your Auntie. She was just my daughter then. To leave her was quite difficult. Ultimately, that unbreakable bound, pulled me back to him. Then Bree and Roger followed. I was so glad. To have my family all together but, want to know a secret?” All the children moved closer, their eyes big. “If it would have been just your Pappy and I, I would have been content. Love like ours is worth any sacrifice you have to make. Don’t settle for less. Promise Granny?”

 

“We promise.” Echoes back.

 

“I love you all. Granny needs to go lie down now.” They stand and scatter off to chores and play.  She sits a moment and watches them. As she starts to get up, he is there, offering his arm.

 

“Jamie, my love.” He smiles and his blue eyes, surrounded by wrinkles, light up.

 

“Mo grá, I heard you tell the bairns you needed rest. Come lay beside me.” It is an offer seventy four years after their wedding night, she still can’t refuse.

 

“To bed or to sleep?” She cheekily asks him. He laughs.

 

“To sleep, I am afraid. But we can dream about the past.”

Are the Broncos (still) the Worst Team in the AFC West?

Don’t let the title of this article fool you Bronco’s Country, you should rejoice in your franchise pushing their chips to the middle of the table to land a guy like Russell Wilson! Wilson has been terrorizing the Western Division of the NFC for the past decade and will surely look to carry his success over to the new Wild West of the AFC.

We’re not trying to rain on anyone’s parade, crap in anyone’s punch bowl, or otherwise spoil the long awaited relief from Denver’s QB Blue Balls. We’re just as excited as you for Wilson vs Mahomes, Herbert, and Carr twice a year. With that said, the Broncos aren’t even the only team in their division that made major moves in free agency and are coming off a last place finish in the AFC West.

However, the Wilson trade was the biggest move of the AFC West so for perennial shits and giggles, let’s take a look at how this blockbuster trade rocks this division today as we try to figure out how the Broncos stack up against their divisional rivals and whether or not Denver is still the worst team in the AFC West! 

The ‘21 Broncos

We aren’t picking on the Broncos when we call them the worst team in the AFC West, they objectively were last season, finishing last in the division once again. 2021 wasn’t pretty as they cycled through pedestrian Quarterbacks Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock, traded away Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller, missed the playoffs, and fired yet another Head Coach.

The Broncos’ Offense was in the bottom half of the league, ranking 19th on the year, ironically one spot ahead of the team who just sent them their shiny new Quarterback. Needless to say, ‘Dangeruss’ isn’t coming off his best year either. In fact it was without question the worst year of his career, as the Seahawks had their first losing season in the Pete Carroll/Russell Wilson era. But hey that was probably an anomaly Broncos’ fans *nervously laughs, sweats profusely. 

All of this is to say that while Russell Wilson has certainly earned his reputation as a top tier QB and is without question the best signal caller the Broncos have had since Peyton Manning, there is legitimate cause for pause on ideas of taking back the AFC West. The Broncos have excellent young talent in players like Javonte Williams, Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, Bradley Chubb, and more. But this is a franchise undergoing transformation from the top down with New Ownership TBD, a first year Head Coach in Nathaniel Hackett, and of course Wilson. Not everyone is Tom Brady and it may very well take time for things to gel. Especially in a new conference against teams like:

The Kansas City Chiefs

Wilson was the top dog QB in his division for years, but the AFC West has belonged to Patrick Mahomes ever since he took the reins for the Chiefs. 2021 was easily the least successful year of the Mahomes era and they still won the division and damn near made another Super Bowl, before completely shitting the bed and blowing an 18 point lead against the Bengals.

The Broncos have shown they can play tough defense, even giving these Chiefs a scare in Week 18, so a Quarterback upgrade of this caliber certainly can make the difference they need. Wilson has also won some of the craziest f#%*ing games we’ve ever seen (see the NFC Championship against Green Bay), so give him a level playing field and anything can happen. Wilson and Mahomes have only faced off once to date, a Week 16 thriller in 2018 which Wilson came out on top in. Since then, Number 15 has made playing in Championship Games a casual affair while embarrassing damn near every defense he’s ever faced.

Even Tom Brady got his ass kicked by Drew Brees and the Saints repeatedly outside of one playoff win, so being the new kid on the block isn’t always easy. Especially when you’re the one who suddenly has to visit the obnoxiously loud stadium once a year. Whatever the hell happens when these two face off, you can expect fireworks, wild finishes, and the rules being stretched in ways you never imagined. Oh and it’s not just KC that’s a problem, there’s also the:

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers were one of the most vexing teams in the league last year. One week they were slapping around the aforementioned division kingpin Chiefs, another week they were getting blown out by the goddamn Texans! The most infuriating moment from the ‘21 Chargers came in Week 18 when Brandon Staley’s dumbass decision making ruined what would have been the funniest tie in history and sent the Bolts back to the Postseason. 

Trivial frustrations aside, one thing we agree with Brandon Staley on is, his team is dope! Look at any key position and you’ll find a bad ass mother f*cker. This team is basically fielding a Ferrari on both sides of the ball with Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Rashawn Slater, and Quarterback Justin Herbert on Offense complemented by Joey Bosa, Derwin James, Asante Samuel Jr., and now J.C. Jackson & Khalil F#%$ing Mack on Defense. 

This pass rush is going to make opposing QBs shit their intestines out on the field and at 33, Wilson may not have the wheels he once did. That’s where the ground game for Russ’s Broncos will need to come in. Not just to keep his 5 foot 11 ass in one piece, but to capitalize on the Chargers’ 30th ranked piss poor rushing defense from last year. The Chargers are obviously working to correct this weakness, but until they do, the Broncos will want to pound the f#%$ing rock with their young breakout star in Javonte Williams. However the most exciting aspect of these matchups will undoubtedly be seeing who throws the better deep ball between Wilson and Herbert. Still, with balance on both sides of the ball and continuity on their side, it’s tough not to give the Bolts the edge between these teams. The Chiefs are the unquestioned kings of the division and the Chargers have the most complete roster, but the best Receiver the Broncos will have to contend with plays for the:

Las Vegas Raiders

The other playoff team from this division has undergone a wild offseason transformation of its own. After years of struggling to find a true number 1 receiver, the Raiders went and got the best one in the league while reuniting Carr with his college teammate in their recent trade for Davante Adams. They also made sure to take care of Maxx ‘Double X’ Crosby who just got handed a nice contract extension and a new best friend in fellow Pass Rusher Chandler Jones. This team truly found its stride last year with Derek Carr posting his best season since 2016 when he was an MVP candidate. Oh and they also managed to lure the infamous Josh McDaniels away from the Patriots for his second stint as an HC (second and a half technically).

With a highly regarded Coach and new playmakers in tow, the Raiders will look to build on their 2021 Wild Card Loss. Vegas has swept the Broncos the last two years and with both teams making significant upgrades this offseason, we’re not betting against the house quite yet on this one. That being said, defending Russell Wilson is not the same thing as defending Drew Lock, something the NFC West is surely celebrating. 

The Raiders gave up nearly 26 points per game, posted a league low 6 interceptions, and were the 26th ranked Defense in the league overall last year. None of which bodes well against an improvisational Quarterback who now has Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton, and Tim Patrick at his disposal. Again, the Raiders have owned this matchup recently, so until proven otherwise we’re giving them the edge. But Raider Nation better hope Carr and Adams pick right back up where they left off at Fresno State, because like the Chargers and Chiefs, they’re also going to have to play:

The ‘22 Broncos

While Denver is the most unproven team in the AFC West (even with Russ) they have built an impressive roster of young talent and hired a promising young coach that earned overwhelming praise from the reigning back to back MVP of the league. "He's been around the game a long time. What he did in Jacksonville, I think, was pure magic, getting them within a quarter of the Super Bowl. He's a great coach. I love spending time with him. He's a fantastic teacher. He's incredible in front of the room." Aaron Rodgers said on a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. This marriage could truly be something special if everything clicks. The onus is on Wilson and his receivers to develop chemistry, while learning an entirely new system from Nathaniel Hackett. It’s tough to put them above any of their divisional rivals quite yet, but for the first time in 7 years, it finally feels like you have a chance Bronco Country.
