he’s perched on the armrest of your study chair, eyes skimming your notes upside-down, one hand fiddling with a stylus while his chin rests on his other hand with a smirk like this is a show. because to him - it is.

you’re explaining supply chains and inflation with ease, hands gesturing wildly like you’re presenting to an entire board of economists, and anaxa’s mostly impressed… until you pause mid-sentence and go:

"wait, but if people are starving, couldn’t the government just, like… print more money?"

the silence is immediate.

anaxa looks at you, expression frozen mid-bite, popcorn hovering inches from his mouth. then he blinks - once, twice - and laughs so hard he actually chokes.

“you're serious, aren't you?” he coughs between laughs. “you just gave a flawless breakdown of bond yields and still said that like a talking dromas putting on a show.”

he’s not mocking you - he’s delighted. he finds it genuinely fascinating that someone so brilliant can also be… well, you. he tousles your hair, “you’re like a walking academic paradox. dangerous with a thesis, but i bet you’d lose a debate to a vending machine.”

then, in a much softer voice, he adds, “but alas, don’t worry. you have me. i’ll keep you from accidentally joining a pyramid scheme next time.”

he doesn’t mind repeating things, or helping you connect the dots. in fact, he likes it. it gives him an excuse to hang out with you and feel just a little smarter for once.

you don’t mean to frustrate him. you’re actually one of the few people he’s intellectually impressed by - until you open your mouth and ask something like:

"wait, but if debt’s just a number, can’t a country just erase it?"

dr. ratio sets his pen down very, very slowly. his eyes narrow like you’ve personally offended the concept of logic. he leans back in his chair, arms crossed, and stares at you as if trying to determine whether this is some sort of social experiment or an elaborate joke.

“…are you… testing me?” he finally asks. “because i refuse to believe someone who wrote this” -he gestures at your annotated essay with perfect citations and an original thesis- “also believes inflation can be fixed by… monetary fairy dust.”

you stare at him innocently. “i mean… conceptually?”

he exhales. long. pained. somewhere between annoyed and baffled.

and then he sighs again, picks up the pen, and begins to draw a graph. again. patiently. carefully. this is the fifth time he’s explained macroeconomic consequences to you this week. but there’s a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth - frustrated, but fond.

“you are a brilliant disaster,” he mutters. “and i have no idea how your brain works. but fine. if i must protect the universe from your potential podcast on why we should all have infinite money, so be it.”

he’ll never admit it out loud, but he’s secretly charmed by how much you care - by how hard you try to understand, even when your brain takes little detours into “what if we made coins edible?”

during god games, where athena and zeus fight physically, i'm thinking one of the props go askew. athena and zeus are fighting in scene, and then one of the props from above suddenly fall, hitting athena in the head, causing panic from the rest of the crew- she's fine of course, she wasnt hit too hard, but panic ensues for everyone, esp zeus and hermes, since athena is family. (athena is zeus' daughter, hermes is athena's brother). and of course the rest of the crew like odysseus, ares, etc)

zeus’ relationship with ares in th is AU is very much like jay’s and mitchell’s from modern family

scene with the cyclops, where the 'cyclops' is supposed to kill polites, when polites is lying there on the ground with fake blood on him he makes it seem a little too real. he gets 'crushed' by the cyclops, and then he rasps out "captain" to odysseus, desperately (acting) like there is dark fake blood dripping from his head, his fake glasses are broken and then his character dies. polites can keep his eyes open for an unnaturally amount of time, and he can make them seem lifeless so after the scene is done, odysseus and eurylochus both go to hug him just to make sure he's there and fine. they cling to him for a bit. polites is very confused, but the hugs are welcome!!

I don’t think I’ve talked much about having a service dog on here, but maybe I should

Boom used to be my service dog, I got him the summer before my last year of high school bcuz I needed a nurse 24/7 to ensure I could eat/sleep/stay alive due to a recent very traumatizing event in my life and my mom came up with the service dog idea.

Getting him was hard. And expensive. No trainers were up to my standards. I, who could barely take care of myself, had to train my own dog. The problem is no matter how hard I worked, my own family or other trainers would ruin it all by messing up my commands, by letting my dog do things I had trained him not to do. It wasn’t training anymore, I ended up simply having breakdowns because everyone kept ruining my dog. People close to me thought they could be an exception to the rules I had taught my MEDICAL AID because surely my DOG would learn the difference between them and strangers.

Eventually I brought him to school. Printed papers explaining what a service dog was and how to behave around him and I plastered them all over the place.

People barked at him, petted him, tried to grab his attention.

His harness was hot pink, patches and signs on it that very clearly said “DO NOT TOUCH” and shit like that.

Someone defaced one of the papers.

Going to school was already hard, I could barely leave the house, my mom had to accompany me to the school doors every morning and then a social worker at school would greet me there and take care of me throughout the day.

I had my own locker at a floor mostly unoccupied so I wouldn’t see other people much and my dog wouldn’t be too distracted.

But it was still to much and I ended up dropping out four months before graduation.

I couldn’t leave the house. I had Boom but he wasn’t perfect yet. People kept ruining him.

But eventually I managed to leave the house. Go to a shopping mall from time to time with him to just walk and have fun.

Too many times people came up to me to tell me the gear I used was hurting my dog. Too many times people came up to me to tell me that their own dog died. Too many people came up to him and pet him without even acknowledging my presence. Too many people telling me they wished they could bring their pets anywhere. Too many people disrespecting me and my service dog.

I stopped going out. I stopped being with my dog.

All this stress and trauma drove a wedge between my dog and I. I consider him my mother’s dog now.

I had to learn to handle myself alone when I went out. It took me years to learn to go out by myself. Only last year I started doing that.

My dog doesn’t live in my room with me anymore.

Having a service dog did still save my life. But those around me ruined that. They made it about themselves. They prioritized my dog over me. My dog that LOVES working. If you tell him “do you want to go to work” chances are he’ll get so excited he will attempt to do a backflip.

We used to have a deep bond. That bond is now broken. People took that from us.

So I guess what I’m trying to say is:

Let people and their service dogs alone.

You are not an exception.

You are not special.

You are disrupting the dog’s training and distracting it.

You are endangering a human life because you can’t resist petting the cute dog.

This isn’t about you. This is about a disabled person trying to simply live their lives.

You don’t know what you’re talking about, your advice is unsolicited and lacks understanding of what the life of a working dog is.

Just leave us alone.

In my opinion, Azula's love language is quality time. (This is a sequel to the Zuko love language post)

Even since her childhood, Azula seemed to be a rather social child. As opposed to Zuko, who didn't seem to have any friends of his own and didn't feel the need to spend time with others except his mother, Azula was seen initiating playtime multiple times. One particular moment of interest is when she pulled Zuko along with her to spy on Ozai and Azulon. There was no need for her to do this, and it would only make it easier for them to get caught, so it only stands to reason that she wanted to spend some mischevious time with her brother.

We also see that Azula seems to act out if she feels left out, such as when Zuko and Ursa excluded her in a flashback in the comics, so she set a bush on fire.

We see that not much has changed after Azula grows up a bit. When given the slightest excuse, she goes out of her way to essentially go on a roadtrip with her friends. She seems to genuinely enjoy having Zuko around, and encourages him to return home, after which she will occasionally approach him to check in. I think the beach showcased a lot of this quality. Azula, despite wanting her father's approval, she doesn't seem as upset to be sent away as Zuko. In fact, she is often the initiator of the group doing 'normal' kid activities. She was the one to initiate the group playing Kuai Ball and seemed excited to go to the party. After the fiasco at the party, she approaches Zuko and invites him to come down to the beach with her and the others.

We also shouldn't forget is that the final straw that lead to Azula's breakdown was Ozai passing up on daddy daughter bonding time during the day of Sozin's Comet.

As Azula's breakdown ensues, she is esentially abandoned by all thouse she cared about. This being the physical manifestation of Azula feeling unloved and uncared for by those she loved is a very good reason to break down, isn't it.

Part 4: The Return

There was a subtle shift in his position as he exhaled the air from his lungs, his finger hovering over the trigger. His focus was on the scope, the target he was aiming at had been entirely unaware of the danger they were in. König had waited for the moment he could take the shot, one second and then another before his finger tightened on the trigger.

At the silenced crack of the shot was fire, König had drawn the weapon away from his shoulder and rested it upon the edge of the building he was perched upon. He drew in a breath, so familiarized with the lingering smell of gunpowder that it had become second nature. He waited until he got confirmation before he rose to his feet and lifted the gun, carrying the deadly weapon with the barrel down.

There was weight to his career as a soldier, a density that had remained attached to him like a phantom hovering over his shoulder. What he had made of himself during his years serving was a far cry from the station he held as a child—the sole child of a single mother who struggled financially to provide for her son who never seemed to stop growing.

As a child he was often bullied for being the child of a single parent who struggled to raise him, who had been left without his alpha father. His mother was loving and kind, she had struggled to provide for her growing boy, but she had never made him feel unloved.

Even as he was bullied for his size and his social anxiety, he had never come to the belief that his mother ever regretted not pursuing his father for more support. His mother, a beautiful and kindhearted omega, knew that she could do it on her own.

The life he had lived as a socially awkward alpha who was always too big and too poor to make many friends had driven him to joining the military. He had volunteered for the military service when he was 17, first pursuing a career as a sniper.

Due to his size, both height and his muscle mass as a big alpha, he was denied the position but had instead been assigned as an insertion specialist. He was a battering ram, a beast that could be sent forward to break down doors and barriers.

He had worked his way up the ranks before he had ultimately left and joined a private military company, proving to KorTac that he was a capable and deadly solider. His years for the PMC had eventually landed him a role as colonel, a promotion that had proven viable and well received due to his skills on and off the battlefield.

König had dedicated his life to being a soldier, to providing and giving back to his mother who had sacrificed so much for him. His career gave him a very healthy income, and with his it he was able to secure his mother financially, allowing her to stop working. It was his goal to provide for his mother and give her a life of comfort that she hadn’t been able to obtain when he was younger.

His mother had often told him that he was a good alpha, and she often wished he would find an omega to settle down with. Not that his mother would want him to walk completely away from being a soldier, however she knew her son.

She had known that König had been objectively closed off with omega’s and hadn’t yet desired to find one to mark. Or perhaps it was that he hadn’t found the right one he was willing to sink his teeth into.

He had slept with omega’s, he had been a relief to a few omega’s during their heats, and they had relieved him during his ruts. But to find an omega whose scent had called to him with such a driving force that it made him want a slice of domesticity, that was another problem entirely.

Or it had been.

Until he felt the hands of fate forcibly driving him to that cafe in Austria. Until he entered that little, small village favourite where a pregnant omega sat, he had never once felt that potential bond. But you, sitting there feeling like you were going to breakdown while carrying a baby in your belly, König had never felt such hunger before.

It wasn’t even lust. No, it was something else entirely. Your scent made him hungry for a life he never thought he would have, a life where he could be a father and husband, a life where his sweet omega would be secure and safe. Safe to raise children, or safe to work just because they wanted to and not because they needed to.

It was fate giving him a jolt of electricity that sparked throughout his entire body, the neurons in his brain firing off rapidly as a lifetime of possibilities had shot off in his brain. It was clear, that fate had wanted him to be there in that moment, to meet you and offer you the help you desired.

And then he went to your inherited cabin for the first time.

He had seen the state of your tiredness, the bed you made in front of the fireplace because you were too tired to drag yourself to bed. He had been well aware of your situation, alpha-less and pregnant, alone to care for yourself after that bastard left you alone. The rumours around the village were telling, and it had only reiterated König’s belief that fate had a heavy hand at play.

He would take care of you. It was decided, already cemented in his brain that you needed him. His mother would have surely kicked his ass if she knew that his neighbour was a little pregnant thing and he hadn’t offered to help. He knew that his mother would be disappointed in him, and it drove him to offer hlep—and then extend that help to fix up that cabin of yours. König was close enough, there were no excuses for him not to help you.

No, in that moment he had decided he would help you. Whether you had wanted his help or not, you clearly needed it.

It was all that was on his mind as he rested against the edge of his perch. The target was eliminated, the operation he was on would come to an end and he would get to go home. He informed you before he left that he would be gone for weeks but once he had come back he would help you fix things.

“Extraktion in fünf.” The voice that echoed in his ear through his comms had briefly drawn him back to focus instead of the continuous thought processes in his mind.

Extraction in five. Five minutes and he would be on a heli back to base, and from base he would debrief. But by tomorrow morning he would be well on his way back to that cabin where he would trade fatigues for a hammer and nail—set on fixing those front steps of yours so you wouldn’t trip and break an ankle.

König had rested the butt of the gun against his shoulder as he waited, feeling the weight against him, a grounding sensation that kept his focus from shifting back to you.

You hadn’t seen the austrian giant in weeks. You were aware that he would be gone for his job, which you quickly learned was a soldier for a private military company through the talks in that small village. The official rank you’d learned was colonel, although that was where the details had stopped though it was through no fault of the residents of that village.

His rank was known and so was the fact that he worked for a private military company, but which company was kept private and so were any kind of details about what he had done. It was clear that people knew he was a long-standing soldier of a rather impressive rank yet no one would ask any other questions.

In the weeks he was gone you had been back to the village a handful of times to cross off minor errands that were on a growing list of things to do. You had returned to the hardware store to cancel the repair services, trying to speak in broken German instead of English, to convey that the problem had been taken care of. Although the problem with your furnace was handled, you still had other things in your cabin that needed to be handled.

There were a few rooms that would need to be painted since the old paint seemed to be aging poorly, peeling in some places and faded in others, and your choices were somewhat limited. Still, you had chosen from what options were there and scheduled a delivery with the owner’s wife for the paint and a few other supplies.

With your delivery of supplies scheduled and your other task of grocery shopping completed, you had returned back to the cabin with the trunk of your vehicle full of groceries. The drive was quiet, your mind restless as it went through the motions of calculating the changes you were about to go through and the aftermath of your ex-alpha's rejection.

Though he hadn’t wanted anything to do with your baby, there was a sliver of disappointment over his rejection. As if you were hopeful that he would come back and want to do the right thing, regardless of him throwing the tests back in your face.

As you parked your vehicle and cut the engine, you remained in the driver’s seat with your hands on the wheel. Your hands tightened around the smooth material; your gaze unfocused as you looked in the general direction of the cabin’s front door.

The steps were still in need of repairs, there were still rickety and roughened, and according to König who had fixed your furnace, acted as a potential danger. He was under the impression that you would somehow manage to trip and break your leg on the rotting wood.

König, that Austrian giant, had been oddly on your mind lately. In the last few weeks, you had occasionally thought of him and the intrusion he had made on your life. Not that his presence in your cabin and insistence on fixing your furnace was a bad thing.

On the contrary, he had helped you and saved you a lot of money by fixing it for you instead of you hiring the repair services. Not only had he helped you fix the furnace, but he then denied you paying him or at least giving him something in exchange for fixing it.

He was puzzling, the whole situation was oddly mystifying. You had pondered it, the whole relationship until you heard a gentle knock on the window of your vehicle. The sound had startled you enough to jump, for your scent to reflect your brief fear that had quickly shifted to surprise.

You pulled the keys from the engine and slipped them into your pocket, grabbing your bag. König had stepped out of the way, allowing you to not just open the door but get out. You stood beside the driver’s side door after you shut it with a soft snap.

Once you were standing almost face to face with König, you dug your heels into the slightly stiff ground. You were silent, watching him just as he was watching you, though his gaze was far more studious.

“Your baby bump looks bigger,” he observed with just a slight twitch to the corner of his lips, “how far along are you now?”

“4 months now,” you answered his question and moved around to the back of your vehicle, popping the trunk in order to start packing your groceries in, “I didn’t realize you were back.”

He’d been gone for weeks, and your pregnancy had progressed from the 3rd month to the 4th month. Though you hadn’t noticed a change in your baby bump clearly there was one, as König had observed. You made the summation that König was an observant alpha, not just because he was a soldier but rather that he was naturally astute.

“I’ll carry those.” He reached in and around you, grabbing the bags of groceries you’d just brought from town. He managed to do what you hadn’t, carrying them all in one hand or on one arm, allowing you to grab the rest of your supplies.

“You don’t have to do this.” You stated, watching him as he turned and began walking to your cabin, his heavy footsteps and long stride leaving you behind. You quickly slammed the trunk down and wished until it latched before you scrambled to follow him.

“You’re pregnant, you should be taking it easy.” He opened the door for you, holding it open for you to pass under his arm. “I brought dry wood for your furnace, and tools to fix the stairs.”

You slipped under his arm and entered your cabin, setting the other supplies you had down in the floor. He was standing there with the door still opened, and you could see the off roading vehicle he used parked off to the side of the cabin. There was a small utility trailer pulled behind that was stacked with wood, and on top of the pile was a worn black toolbox.

“I’m only 4 months-“

“4 months or 8 month makes no difference.” He huffed, his eyes zeroing in on your baby bump as his hands flexed by his side. “You will stay inside and rest, I will put away the wood and fix the stairs.”

He said in such a manner of fact, as if it wasn’t a suggestion and more of an order. However his tone wasn’t forceful, it was firm yet carried with it an air of genuine concern. To his demand, soft as it was, you had kept your protests buried deep within yourself.

You had wanted to argue, you had wanted to negate his concerns and tell him you didn’t need his help. Every protest you might have aired was silenced by his promised acts that he was in the middle of completing.

And it felt good. It felt so good to have someone care for you, to have an alpha who wanted to do small acts for you without needing to be asked. It was just another reminder that there was a difference between the alpha that left you behind and the alpha standing in front of you.

“Can I…get you anything then? Food, water, tea..?” You wanted to do something in exchange, and if he wouldn’t allow you to pay him than you’d have to come up with something else.

His blue eyes swept over you again, his lips pressed into a firm line. His scent was not oddly calming to you but it had simultaneously made your heart skip a beat. Not that you would want to admit it, not that you would ever acknowledge the feeling.

— they are not technically twins, they're just two clones who happen to develop back to back at the same time, but those are just semantics since they were raised like brother and sister anyway; wendy is considered oldest but only because she was the first outta test tube (tim had to have a little breakdown moment while holding her in his arms before he was able to get jackie out too; wendy is the only person who actually cares about being oldest, jackie is not thrilled because "you're literally only 10 minutes older can you maybe chill")

— wendy's full name is gwendolyn stephanie drake, bc i believe that if tim Has to honor someone by giving their name to his child it should be steph, plus i am cackling at the thought of wendy naming all her social accounts "gwen stefani"; no one really ever calls her gwen tho, the only reason she's not just wendy in papers is because tim was a little pretentious; i also quite like gwendolyn lois but i don't think tim would actually go for it (kon could tho, if he were alive at the time)

— jackie is jackson bartholomew drake. i personally prefer to think that if tim gave it some time he would probably choose a different name, but he just really missed his dad at the moment (he missed everyone, really), and by the time he actually had enough mental stability to sit on it the kid was already pretty much established as jackie withing the family, so yeah. no one ever calls him jack btw, so it's fine

— they both quite like their names although they can't help but nudge their dad a little from time to time, being like "gwendolyn stefanie, dad, really? it's like you picked up a name on pinterest or some shit" ("language"); they are both referred to as "ducklings" within the family (dick was the first to do it, tim started doing the same by pure accident and then it just kinda stuck)

— wendy took a lot after janet drake genetic-wise, to the point where it almost rubs tim in a wrong way sometimes when she gets older — her hair is much lighter than her father's or brother's and doesn't really curl that much, although she's not as pale as tim and has a distinguish golden undertone to her skin; she also gets freckles in summer. tim is one of few people who can actually see kon in her without deliberate searching, especially when she smiles. she has his eyes though, and she leans more on a shorter side (short queen supremacy)

— jackie is pretty much kon in miniature, or at least he is if you don't know where to look. kon himself insists that jackie is a perfect mix of both him and tim, it's just that distinguish curly hair and golden-brown skin throw people off most of the time — jackie for sure has tim's nose and cheekbones, tim's high forehead, tim's sheepish smiles and tim's cunning smirks. he's also a bit leaner that kon as he gets older and also a little bit shorter, although he's still taller than both tim and wendy

— wendy is a certified horse girl, she took horse riding lessons since she was like five (she was begging tim for y e a r s really, at first he insisted on waiting till she was at least six but i guess her kryptonian powers kicked in a little earlier and it doubled down some of tim's parental anxiety, although he definitely was there for a first few lessons just to keep an eye on her). damian got her her own horse eventually, because of course he did. he is her favorite uncle ever since

— she's a true crime videos/podcasts enjoyer (that's how she bonds with her dad)

— jackie is very much into making paper collages since he was around eight years old and has made his first one in school for fathers day (tim has framed it immediately and set it on his table in the WE office; it's still there after years); he used to have a lot of social anxiety as a kid because of being homeschooled 'till first grade and being very attached to tim, and has found the process of making paper collages very soothing

— jackie graduates college eventually (alfred: "thank god. at least one of them")

— they both eventually got into photography like their dad, but jackie is taking more of a professional approach, whereas wendy is mostly doing it for the sake of keeping the memories; that's why she has a small digital camera that she always carries around (it's covered in cute sparkling stickers because duh)

— as i mentioned, the kids were homeschooled for a while, by which i mean that they never went to kindergarten because tim was too paranoid about any potential kryptonian superpowers kicking in anytime; the other reason was that tim's kind of a helicopter parent, especially after coming back from his brucequest, and he's very dependent on both of his kids

— jackie loves his dad more than anything else in the world, and has spent most of his early childhood following him around and throwing tantrums the second tim was out of his sight (which was quite rare, to be fair, at least until tim had to get back to his job at the WE); tim is 90% sure that it has something to do with him being gone for a while to find and save bruce. it evens out a little as jackie gets older and starts going to school and then college, but he's still pretty much codependent, and any decision that he makes about his life ties back to "what would dad do; will it make dad proud/happy; what would dad want for me"

— wendy on the other hand is kon's daughter through and through, she admires him and looks up to him but she has a very complicated, conflicted feelings about her and her brother's circumstances of birth, making her anxious in a way that is like "oh my god am i being annoying what if he doesn't like me what if he looks at me and only sees a living proof of his humans rights violation should i consider never talking to him again god i HATE my dad", so most of her actual interactions with kon are quite awkward on both ends

— tim and kon do not get together until kids are around their late teens, so neither of them calls or really considers kon dad, even tho he definitely played a significant part in their upbringing as soon as he came around with the whole child-cloning situation. wendy was the first to call him dad not long after she moved to the kent's farm, which was an accident, really — she was trying out vigilantism for the first time and got her ass kicked bc lack of experience, and her first instinct at being cornered by a villain was to literally just call for dad (at the back of her mind she meant tim, because to their family kon was always just kon, but the moment he pulled her in and put his hand on the back of her head and said "it's okay, sweetheart, dad's here", nothing has ever made more sense to her than kon being her father. the thought was both thrilling and terrifying)

— tim is "dad", kon is "pa" (if that wasn't already obvious)

— also, yes. wendy eventually moves to the kent's farm to live with kon; more on that in some other post

— kon kind of inherited the kent's farm after both john and martha passed away; technically clack is still the one who owns it, but his and his family's life is mostly in metropolis and he didn't want the place he grew up in turn into an empty memorial of it's better days + he also knew how important it was to kon at the time to have a place he could always return to, so yeah, everyone won in this situation

you didn’t expect to be particularly THIS nervous to present in today’s class, but then, your fine shyt, leehan, steps up to the front of the room and, all of a sudden, all your worries faded away just from the sight of his face

your heart beats raises, beating out of your chest as you remember last night’s venture through his twitter feed. he’s looking as fine as ever — in front of you, wearing a grey sweater with his tousled hair. he’s so effortlessly handsome.

‘thank god i decided to sit infront.’ you think to yourself, feeling blood flush your face

i mean, sure he’s in your chem lab, but you’re pretty sure he’s never really noticed you beyond the few shared glances when you’re stationed nearby each other and it’s killing you. but right now, standing at the front of the classroom, leehan looks so different — focused frown and tired eyes, presumably from the night before, trying to memorize the material he researched. he chose to present on the chemistry of ocean ecosystems and, judging by the look in his eyes, you can just tell that this isn’t just a topic to him

leehan starts to babble, giving the class a basic breakdown of marine life chemistry, but within seconds, he’s diving deeper, animatedly describing the ocean’s ecosystem as if it’s a living, breathing puzzle he’s trying to solve. his hands gestures excitedly when he talks about the bonds between organisms and how they rely on each other to thrive in the depths of the ocean. there’s something captivating in the way he speaks — like he’s not just presenting but inviting the whole class into his world. and slowly, you find yourself leaning forward, totally hooked, oh, on the presentation too i guess!

“and then there’s the corydoras catfish,” he says, smiling a little as he describes its contribution to the ocean system, “they’re very social fish so they’re barely alone!” the whole class might just hear a random fact, but you catch something else; a glimpse of leehan’s dedication to understanding even the smallest details about marine life, making your attraction towards him grow deeper

“i’m such a fool for u..” you confess under your breath, perchance wanting him to know how you felt about him

he dives into a ramble about coral reefs, the chemistry of their growth, and how they’re as fragile as they are beautiful. his face lights up with every word, not even glancing at his notes. it’s clear his passion isn’t just shallow—his dedication being your newfound obsession

by the time he wraps up, you’re practically just staring at him; not even in a “focused” way, you were ogling at him. this wasn’t just a class presentation; it was like getting to peek into a hidden part of his mind, one filled with excitement for something he loves. you can’t help but smile a little bigger, heart pounding in a way you didn’t see coming—even if he was fine shyt

for a brief second, leehan glances your way, as if noticing you’re there—you quickly drop your gaze, hoping he doesn’t catch the blush creeping onto your face

‘this is crazy,’ you think, ‘who tf falls for someone because of a lecture on fish!?’ but as soon as he sits down, you steal another glance, you’re definitely in too deep

Kind of bouncing off a discussion with @thecircularsystem on a post they made, but honestly I think one of the reasons that syscourse as a tag is so rancid and unproductive is because I feel most people in those spaces are not actually in those spaces to engage with discussion, debate, conversation, or understanding about complex topics and experiences, but they're in those spaces to fulfill an emotional / psychological / mental need that they are not getting elsewhere in their life.

I feel that while the words and the content might be about advocacy, philosophy, diagnostic credibility, being nice or mean to people, etc, the actual reason engagement is occurring is not really ABOUT that. Maybe it is a secondary or tertiary intent, but first and foremost it always seems to be about "being heard" or "defending oneself" or "protecting a community" or "convincing people that this is right or wrong" or "correcting people" or "protecting / standing up for friends and peers" - all of which boil down a lot to 1) getting validation 2) getting attention 3) making oneself feel secure / safe 4) making oneself feel smart / important / ego boost 5) making one feel as if they are making a difference / able to make a change or 6) gaining a sense of belonging / pack mentality

Which none are bad! Or wrong reasons really, but the issue tends to come when the need that it's filling is not actually in line with much of the reality of what it is actually doing.

Syscourse, particularly referring to the more aggressive and non-productive yelling at one another often found in the tag, might make someone feel safer, secure, or like they are participating in cause that will make spaces safer, but as someone who has been on here since 2018, very little actually gets done to improve spaces. Every year or so, someone involved in syscourse has a severe mental health breakdown / ends up in inpatient / gets chased off the internet and harassed solely because of their engagement in syscourse. I've never really seen anything 'safe' come out of syscourse other than the formation of the sysconversation tag as a means of escaping the hurt cycle syscourse tends to be.

Syscourse, in the realm of information spreading / miss information correcting, is often done poorly and without much scientific literacy. More often than not, its individuals sharing and posting scientific articles that prove their point without much understanding of the nuance and layers that goes into research. Often these articles are not truly discussed as much used as points of credibility and for people that are actually involved in research and practical experience, it's a large eye roll. It's largely posturing for smart points rather than actually improving any actual information or education about complex and nuanced topics. Most things in life are not black and white, cut and dry, or clear One Right and One Wrong like it often is in syscourse.

Syscourse, in regards to making a difference / change, is unfortunately the same argument / flawed nature as the commentary I made about feeling "safe". Nothing has really ever changed in 7+ years of me being on tumblr dot com and being around the syscourse tag. It might feel like things are being done, like differences are being made, but very very little is done through the standard yelling and aggressively barking about who is right and who is wrong.

Syscourse, as a community / group, can feel great to be a part of. If you've never really been a part of something and desire to feel included / important / have a social circle and friends, syscourse does provide a space for that. The only issue is, that the groups and social spaces centered around syscourse tend to be centered around hurt, fear, hate, negativity, and just a lot of negative feelings and emotions that worsen one another. On one hand, you get people to interact with and people who you agree with and you get this sort of support and bonding, but on the other hand, the social contract almost requires you to stay in at least a slightly dysregulated state to continue participating. Syscourse is inherently stressful and the aggressive manners that is normalized in it furthers that stressful situation. It's incredibly hard to leave or get out of those stressful, dysregulated, fight/flight mental spaces in your life outside of the internet when your common hobby / social media free time repetitively puts you back into those spaces. It fills one need (belonging and community) at the expense of the ability to actually relax and get out of a dysregulated mental space (which can feel normal and comfortable to trauma survivors but also holds back recovery)

I really don't think many people in syscourse would argue with me when I say "Syscourse is rarely productive" and so I think its really important to reflect on exactly, truly, and honestly what your reason for engaging in syscourse is and question if syscourse is really the best way to fulfill that purpose. This is especially so because while syscourse might fill a need somewhat, I can almost promise you in almost every situation, it only does a superficial job filling that need and it only does enough to make it so you don't feel that motivated to actually address the issue in your life that is making that need in the first place.

For example, Syscourse can provide community and a sense of belonging, but only at a trade off. There are other ways to foster a sense of community and belonging in your life that don't require you to chronically be stressed or in a state of fight / flight when engaging in it. It's not easy, and its not nearly as convenient as goign on tumblr dot com and making a post or logging into discord and talking with like minded individuals about how horrible or bad this post or that post is and catastrophizing the impacts of a Post on Tumblr Dot Com.

I dunno man, just some food for thought and considerations.
