Everything You Need to Know About Brake Pads: Guide for Indian Drivers
The significance of brake pads in our vehicles is often underestimated until we're met with the dreaded squeaks or longer stopping distances. As an Indian driver, navigating the bustling streets of cities like Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, or Bangalore, you know the importance of reliable brakes. Let’s explore brake pads, understanding their significance, lifespan, signs of wear, and the cost of replacement, while also shedding light on some trusted Indian aftermarket brands like Bosch, TVS, and Rane.
Understanding the Basics: What Are Brake Pads?
Brake pads are small yet crucial components of your vehicle's braking system. Made from materials like ceramic or metal alloys, these pads sit inside the calipers behind each wheel. When you press the brake pedal, the calipers clamp the brake pads against the rotor, generating friction that slows down your car and brings it to a stop. {provide link to a video on YouTube or show a relevant image to make this easy to understand.}
In India, where traffic congestion is a common occurrence, having reliable brake pads is essential for ensuring safety on the roads. Whether you're maneuvering through crowded city streets, driving on the highway or navigating winding mountain roads, your brake pads play a vital role in maintaining control over your vehicle.
How Long Do Brake Pads Last in Indian Conditions?
The lifespan of brake pads can vary depending on several factors, including driving habits, road conditions, and the quality of the pads themselves. In India, where diverse terrain and varying traffic conditions are prevalent, brake pads typically last up to 25,000 kilometers. However, aggressive driving, frequent braking, and prolonged exposure to harsh conditions can accelerate wear and shorten their lifespan.
For Indian drivers, it's crucial to pay attention to signs of brake pad wear and address any issues promptly. Failure to do so can compromise your vehicle's braking performance, putting you and others at risk on the road.
Signs of Brake Pad Wear: What to Look Out For
Identifying signs of brake pad wear is essential for maintaining the safety and performance of your vehicle. In India's challenging driving conditions, where sudden stops and heavy traffic are commonplace, it's essential to stay vigilant and recognize when your brake pads need attention. Here are some indicators to watch out for:
Squeaking Noises: One of the most common indicators of worn brake pads is the presence of squealing or squeaking sounds when you apply the brakes. These high-pitched noises are caused by a small metal indicator built into the brake pad. When the pad wears down to a certain level, this indicator makes contact with the rotor, producing the squealing sound. If you hear such noises, it's a clear sign that your brake pads need attention. Brands like Bosch and TVS offer high-quality brake pads designed to minimize noise and provide reliable performance in Indian conditions.
Grinding Noises: If you ignore the squealing sound for too long, it may progress to a more severe grinding noise. This noise occurs when the brake pad material has completely worn away, and the metal backing plate is grinding directly against the rotor. Grinding noises indicate significant wear and potential damage to both the brake pads and the rotor. Ignoring this symptom can lead to costly repairs and compromised braking performance.
Indicator Lights: Some vehicles come equipped with brake pad wear sensors that trigger a dashboard warning light when the pads need replacement. If you see this warning light, it's essential to have your brake pads inspected by a qualified mechanic and replaced if necessary. Rane is another reputable brand known for manufacturing durable brake pads suitable for Indian vehicles.
Brake Pedal Vibrations: Another sign of worn brake pads is vibrations or pulsations felt through the brake pedal or steering wheel when braking. These vibrations indicate uneven wear or damage to the brake pads, causing inconsistent braking performance. In severe cases, vibrations may be a sign of warped brake rotors, which can occur if worn brake pads are not replaced promptly. Investing in quality brake pads from trusted Indian brands like Rane can help maintain smooth and consistent braking performance.
Increased Stopping Distance: Noticeably longer stopping distances can indicate worn brake pads that are no longer able to provide sufficient friction to slow down your vehicle effectively. In Indian traffic conditions, where sudden stops are often necessary, having reliable brake pads is essential for ensuring your safety and the safety of others on the road.
Visual Inspection: Performing a visual inspection of your brake pads is a straightforward way to assess their condition. Most brake pads have a small window on the caliper that allows you to see the thickness of the pad material. If the pads appear excessively thin (less than a quarter-inch thick), cracked, or worn unevenly, they need to be replaced. Additionally, check for any signs of metal-to-metal contact, which indicates severe wear and potential damage to the rotor.
Choosing the Right Brake Pads: Indian Aftermarket Brands
When it comes to replacing your brake pads, opting for quality aftermarket brands can ensure reliable performance and durability. In India, several reputable brands specialize in manufacturing brake pads specifically designed for Indian road conditions. Here are a few notable options:
Bosch: Bosch is a globally renowned brand known for its high-quality automotive components, including brake pads. With a focus on innovation and performance, Bosch brake pads are designed to meet the demanding requirements of Indian drivers, providing excellent stopping power and durability.
TVS: TVS is a trusted name in the Indian automotive industry, offering a wide range of aftermarket components, including brake pads. With a commitment to quality and reliability, TVS brake pads are engineered to deliver consistent performance in various driving conditions, making them a popular choice among Indian drivers.
Rane: Rane is a leading manufacturer of automotive components, including brake pads, with a strong presence in the Indian market. Known for their precision engineering and superior quality, Rane brake pads are designed to withstand the rigors of Indian roads, ensuring safe and reliable braking performance.
Cost of Brake Pad Replacement in India
While the cost of brake pad replacement can vary depending on factors such as the brand, vehicle make and model, and labor charges, it's essential to prioritize safety and quality when choosing replacement brake pads. In India, the average cost of brake pad replacement ranges from ₹2000 to ₹5000 per axle, depending on the brand and type of pads chosen. Investing in quality brake pads from trusted aftermarket brands may require a slightly higher initial investment but can ultimately save you money in the long run by reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimizing the risk of brake-related issues on the road. Brake pads are a critical safety component of your vehicle, especially in the challenging driving conditions prevalent in India. By understanding the signs of brake pad wear and choosing quality aftermarket brands like Bosch, TVS, and Rane, you can ensure reliable braking performance and maintain safety on the road. Whether you're navigating city streets or embarking on a long-distance journey, prioritizing the health of your brake pads is essential for a smooth and safe driving experience in India

1970 Chrysler 300 Hurst
One of the great unknowns about the 1970 Chrysler 300 Hurst is exactly how many cars were built. Estimates put the total as low as 485, and as high as 502 cars. Regardless of what the figure actually is, the car itself is a pretty special piece of machinery.
Tumblr media
The 300 Hurst is a giant of a car at 19′ in length. All of the Hursts rolled off the production line finished in Spinnaker White. The cars were then shipped to the Hurst factory in Warminster, Pennsylvania, where a substantial transformation was performed. The first change to be made was the removal of the standard Chrysler steel hood skin, which was replaced with a fiberglass unit. This featured a decorative hood scoop and the obligatory set of recessed hood locks. The deck lid was also removed, and once again, a fiberglass replacement, complete with a spoiler integrated with the rear quarter panels, was also installed. The White paintwork was complimented by the addition of Satin Tan highlights and contrasting pinstripes, and the wheels were adorned with the same Satin Tan color in the centers. This Hurst is a clean car, with a small area of rust visible in the lower section of the driver’s side front fender, and surface corrosion present on the car’s underside. The Spinnaker White paint appears to be in good condition, but there has been some deterioration of the Satin Tan paint on both the hood and the deck lid. The exterior trim and chrome all look good, while the tinted glass is close to perfect.
Tumblr media
The 300 Hurst was a premium car at a premium price, so naturally, it required a premium interior. In this case, seat upholstery was available in a single type and color. Continuing the exterior theme, the color is Saddle Tan, and the material is leather. The plush front seats are not standard 300 items but have been pilfered from the Imperial parts bin. While the original intention was for a Hurst shifter to be part of the interior features, this is something that never eventuated. The interior of this Hurst is close to perfect, with a single discolored spot on the dash pad being the most obvious fault. The rest of it presents in virtually as-new condition, and as befits a luxury car, it is loaded with luxury touches. These include air conditioning, power windows, six-way power seats, cruise control, a remote trunk release, and I think that there also might be an 8-track player hanging under the dash.
Tumblr media
The 300 Hurst was the biggest of the muscle cars, and as such, it needed a big motor to get it moving. In this case, it is the TNT 440 engine, pumping out 375hp. The Hurst also features a 727 TorqueFlite transmission, a 3.23 rear end, power steering, power brakes, heavy-duty rear springs and front torsion bars, and sway bars. The exhaust was a full dual system, ending in quad tips. This Hurst hasn’t seen a lot of recent use, and documentation confirms that between 1986 and 2019, it managed to accumulate a grand total of 20 miles! Since being removed from its climate-controlled storage, it has undergone a meticulous mechanical check and recommissioning, and it is now said to run and drive perfectly. The owner does suggest that while the tires look good, they are pretty olds, and replacing them might be a good idea. He also says that the Hurst may need mufflers fairly soon. The car does come with a fair collection of documentation, including the original Build Sheet and Window Sticker, a pristine Certi-Card, Owner’s Manual, as well as dealer paperwork and other assorted items.
Tumblr media
While there has always been some question surrounding the build totals for the 1970 300 Hurst, one thing is certain, and that is that there are less than 300 cars in existence today. Pristine examples can fetch sums in excess of $30,000, and even a rough example in need of restoration can still sell for anywhere around $13,000. This one doesn’t need a major restoration, but it does require some cosmetic work. I’m not sure where bidding is eventually going to go with this one, but I would suspect that it will be somewhere around the low to mid $20,000 mark. Even at that price, it probably wouldn’t be a bad buy.

me: The human body is an infinitely complex machine that cannot be truly and perfectly fixed or repaired into the original state, even when one single thing was what led it to a state of dysfunction in the first place. While medical care, treatments and medicines can support the body in the healing process, or partially restore some of the natural functions that it struggles to perform on its own, there are no simple one-time cures that could fix something as easily as correcting a single marking in dysfunctional code, changing the worn out brake pads in a car, or adding more blue to a paint mixture to adjust the balance and create a more cool tone of green. me five minutes later, feeling under the weather and heating myself something for dinner: This chanterelle soup will heal me.

Tbh I never really understood the Audi vs BMW thing or why both brands get sm hate. They're both pioneers in the automotive industry that expand the boundaries of what cars can do
Like yes they're expensive to maintain and each have had their issues, but that's because they're high performance luxury vehicles. They push like 200hp minimum at the base model level and endure more wear and tear than other cars in their class
Regular maintenance expands beyond oil changes, brake pads and tires

I had a very slow leak in a tire so I took the Subaru (the required vehicle of WA state) to the local gas station to get checked out. The leak is so slow that they didn't see any bubbles when they dunked it. As they were reinstalling the tire they informed me that all the tires were installed backwards and asked where I had last gotten them rotated. They were chagrined when I told them that they had rotated the tires two weeks ago. Many tires have a directional tread pattern - so there are tires for the right of your car and tires for the left and they can't (or shouldn't) be swapped. If they are, then the tread pattern is running backwards and the tire will have crappy performance, especially in rain or snow. When rotating non-directional tires, the right front moves to the left rear and so on and that's what they'd done. We haven't had any rain in two weeks so I didn't notice. Needless to say they corrected the problem without charge.
While the tire was off I checked the brakes - I had them redone recently so I wasn't surprised to see that the pads had a lot of wear left.

Hi Al! Can you please explain me what is exactly happen during "lock up"? What does it mean actually? Is it a driver or a car mistake? Is it track specific? Sorry, I'm quite new in this sport and some technical terms/slangs are not pretty clear for me. :) Thank you!
So a lock up occurs when too much braking force is applied to the wheel
There can be many factors that influence this, but it comes down to the driver to know how much pressure to apply.
Essentially the abrasiveness of the track can effect how much brake force needs to be applied, as a rougher track will slow the car down faster than a smooth slippery one, and as such less braking force will need to be applied.
You can also change the brake bias in the car which changes how much of the braking force is applied to the front brakes vs the rear brakes. So if the brake bias was too far to the front and the driver braked then the tyres would likely lock up.
Essentially what happens is, the brake pads slow the rotation of the brake rotors, which slows the wheel and the tyre speed and in a lock up enough friction is applied to the rotor to stop its rotation or slow it to the point where the tyre loses traction and slides across the track surface creating a lot of smoke.
A lock up will likely result in the tyre getting flat spotted, which can affect grip and also induces vibrations into the car, these reduce the performance and can make the car hard to drive, so it’s always preferable to change tyres after a lock up.

Title:  We're Counting On You, Lord
Series: Supernatural B-Sides, part 1
Author:  BJ
Fandom:  Supernatural
Rating:  Teen
Synopsis: In my headcanon Baby's a bit more tempermental than she is on-camera, and breakdowns happen often enough Sam has a routine down when it comes to busting Dean's balls over it.
Tags:  Sam Winchester, Dean Winchester, Jody Mills, Baby the Impala, Baby is a brat, Sam is a brat, Dean is a brat, songfic
AN:  Song is "Mercedes Benz," written by Janis Joplin, Michael McClure, and Bob Neuworth, performed by Joplin on the album 'Pearl.' ---
If asked, Dean Winchester will call his car the perfect hunter's car.  Sure she drinks gas like water and doesn't do off-road, like, at all, and don't even ask about parking.  But the pros -- bench seats for emergency sleeping, trunk big enough for a small apartment's worth of gear, all sorts of nooks and crannies for hiding spare cash and ammo, surprisingly inconspicuous for her size and age, able to cruise at 70 for days -- far outweigh the cons as far as he's concerned.  Power, beauty, and able to bounce back from everything the job can possibly throw at them.  They're a matched set, Dean will tell you.
If asked, Sam Winchester will point out that the car sticks out like a bobcat at a dog show, the air conditioning barely works no matter how much Dean screws around with it, its zero-to-sixty can be measured in days, it eats brake pads like they're potato chips, and why in the hell hasn't Dean upgraded the suspension because he swears he can feel the car crying whenever it hits a pothole.  And with the amount of time they spend taking secondary highways, that's a lot of crying.
Most of his gripes get shot down with an annoyed glower and, "One word-- legroom."  And Sam will admit, Dean's got him there.  Getting stuck in Brady's Alfa Romeo Spyder had not exactly been the high point of his freshman year.
Questions about reliability will produce similarly opposed responses.  Dean will swear on any holy book you hand to him that Baby's a perfect lady, never breaks down, never strands him in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night.  Sam will make sure he's safely out of earshot and swear the damn thing's never completed a journey without going bang, ever, not once in the thirty-odd years he's been riding in it.
The truth of course is somewhere in the middle.  Dean's been working on Baby since he was old enough to hold a flashlight steady and he's brought her back from scrap and spare parts more than once.  But the flat fact of the matter is, the car's a blue-collar broad of a certain age who's lived hard.  She has . . . quirks.
---
bang!
"What--"
cough
"Aw shit--"
"Mmm?"
"Don't-- c'mon Baby, just for me, be sweet to me--"
sick revving noises
"God dammit."
"I think the car just gave you the finger."
"Don't listen to him sweetheart, he's just being a bitch as usual."
bang! car lurches hard enough to throw driver and passanger out of their seats
"Definitely telling you to go fuck yourself."
"Shut up."
crunch of shoulder gravel, engine stops
"Well . . . at least it's not dark this time.  Or raining.  Or sleeting, Or--"
creak of door hinges, pop of hood latch
"Sam, shut up."
"No, you know what?  You're right.  I will shut up."
pop of trunk lock, clink of tools
"Because--"
dramatic clearing of throat
"Oh no you fucking don't."
humming for a note
"Start that shit and--"
voice rises in pitch
"'Like to do a song--'"
"Shave your head in your sleep--"
"'--of great social--'"
"Break every bone in your body--"
"'--and political import.'"
"Tie you to a bed naked and call that Becky chick--"
"'Goes like this.'"
thunking of a hand on a car's side panel
"Oh Lord! won't'cha buy me, a Mercedes-Benz?  Mah friends all drive Porsches, I must make a-mends."
"I will fucking end you Sammy, I swear to God."
"Don't call me that-- I work haaaard all my life time, no help from my friends."
"Sammy-Sammy-Sammykins--"
"So Lord! won't'cha buy me a Mercedes-Benz?  Oh Lord! won't'cha buy me, a color TV?"
"Sammycutiewootiepieface--"
"Dialin' for Dollars is tryin' to find meeee.  I wait for dee-livery, each day until three."
dark muttering about home perms and dye it all bright fucking pink I swear to God
"So Lord! won't'cha buy me a color TV?  Oh Lord! won't'cha buy me, a night on the town?"
soft whine of ultimate suffering
"I'm countin' on you Lord, please don't let me down.  Prooooove that'cha love me, and buy the next round."
"Make mine a double."
"So Lord! won't'cha buy me a night on the town?  Everybody! oh Lord! won't'cha buy me a Mercedes-Benz?  Mah friend all drive Porsches, I must make a-mends.  I worked haaaard all my life time, no help from my friends.  So Lord! won't'cha buy me, a Mer-Cey-Deez-Benz?"
silence
"Are you finished?"
a decidedly fiendish chuckle
"Just getting warmed up.  My car is a . . . "
sounds of two grown men trying to seriously throttle each other by the side of the road
---
"So, you boys wanna run that by me again?"
Sam and Dean glared while the Sheriff of Minnehaha County tried not to laugh.  She made a mental note to show Donna the video later.  The best part had to be the both of them looking up guiltily as Jody barked, "GENTLEMEN," Sam in a headlock and Dean with a bloody nose.
They pointed at each other, "He started it."
---
AN2: Oh, the song Sam started at the end is Psychostick's, "Two Ton Paperweight."
