From Braids: Fingerwave Saint, based on halos in Renaissance paintings.Courtesy of Crowe
Forget Pinterest inspiration boards—there are some hairstyles that are so inventive, the Louvre would be lucky to have them. Exhibit A: the intricate, braid-centric masterpieces crafted by fine artist Shani Crowe. After receiving a grant from Chicago-based nonprofit 3Arts, Crowe launched Braids, a series of photographs capturing real women adorned with her elaborate hairstyles. Though she’s been commissioned by celebrities such as Solange to create custom works (you might have seen one on SNL), Crowe happily considers new models—who don’t pay for the service.
You’re trained in film, photography, painting, and pottery. Why choose braids as your medium?
I’m a very tactile person—I’m good with my hands. And I’ve been thinking of doing a project like this since I was a kid. I come from a large family, and we often did each other’s hair. I always saw having my hair braided as a privilege, and I wanted to share that.
From Above All.Courtesy of Crowe
The pieces you make are so ornate.
Oh, man. They take hours and hours and hours. The crown I made for Solange took me fiftysomething because of all the individual Swarovski crystal beads and armature—and that’s just for the separate hairpiece attached to her braids. Usually, my looks average five or six hours. You really get to know someone.
How long do people wear them?
Typically, the styles are taken down right after I shoot, because they’re not really wearable. People have to go to work. But if you want a style to last, you should tie a satin scarf flat to your hair at night to keep the braids lying down, or wear a silk bonnet—it helps. Avoid cotton, because it takes moisture away from your hair.

How do you keep styles sharp and eliminate frizz?
I like braids to be very crisp and neat; it’s about the finish for me. You’ve got to pay special attention to the part. If your scalp is dry and an oil isn’t working, try witch hazel on a cotton pad, and gently rub—that’ll help with flakes without drying out the hair.
What’s your view on nonblack women wearing cornrows or dreadlocks?
American culture, in general, doesn’t do a good job of honoring indigenous art. There’s never a moment where it’s like, These braids are from.… People will just do it and say it’s just a hairstyle. Personally, I’m not here to tell people what they can and cannot do. I know what I’m going to do: I’m going to continue to create.
To prep dry hair for styling, Crowe spritzes Vernon François Pure~Fro Moisture Spray (2) before a blow-dry: “It makes hair feel very soft, and it’s a way to help hair receive product a little better.” Harry Josh Pro Tools Pro Styling Clips (1) keep hair in controlled sections for manipulation over long periods of time. To create a perfect design with razor-sharp lines, Crowe saturates hair with Ampro Pro Styl Shine ’n Jam Conditioning Gel (4) before parting it with a heatproof Fromm Diane Ionic Anti-Static Comb (3). “This holds hair together on one side of the part, making it easier to keep flyaways in their position because they’re gelled down.”

Note: there's some slight differences from the fic with how I ended up drawing it so please read the fic to see how it was originally described!

Currently thinking about Laila brushing Jean’s hair and maybe she's noticing dispersed streaks of silver mixed in with his dark strands that twinkle like the tails of shooting stars in a midnight sky. Not enough to draw much attention unless you get up close like she is but enough to make her deeply sad. She doesn’t say anything, but her hands might gentle even more as they pull the brush through his hair.
Then flash forward 2, maybe 3 years later and Jean is visiting Laila and Cat’s home and Laila gestures with a hairbrush for Jean to sit in front of her spot on the couch. He knows the drill and complies. Jean leans his head into the familiar touch and Laila has to pause mid-stroke as she notices again. The silver is still there in places, but it’s different. It’s so much less than what was woven in the choppy strands Jean wouldn’t let her trim all those years ago.
And when Jean starts to look back, Laila quickly hides her watery eyes with a quick kiss to the crown of his head.

Hair Day
(Based off my headcanon that Fiyero learns how to braid for Elphaba. No, I will not be accepting criticisms or questions on this. It is law.)
He’s been different, since the day Dr. Dillamond was fired. He’s not the boy who swept into Shiz that day, who dragged them all down to the Ozdust ballroom, the life of the party, the boy on top. Now he turns down plans, even the most excitifying ones, tells her to go to the Ozdust with Pfannee and Shenshen, tells her he’s going to the library to study.
Thinking. Galinda can hardly believify it.
And while she can and does have a good time with Pfannee and Shenshen at the Ozdust, and other swankified places in town, she can’t help but think….what’s the point in dating the Winkie Prince if nobody sees them together? At least every now and then.
And it’s following that on one night that she makes her way back to the dorm early, following the path to Fiyero’s room and knocking on his door. She’s going to ask him, she resolves. She is going to find out what has made him so moodified recently. And then it’ll all be okay. They’ll fix it, and things will be back to normal.
But he doesn’t answer. She knocks again, then carefully opens the door, finding it unlocked. Fiyero’s room is dark, his bed empty but still neatly made. Clearly, he hasn’t been here in awhile.
Galinda deflates, making her way back to her and Elphie’s room, and she’s almost there when she hears it.
It’s distinctively his voice, but there’s something else. She hears laughter, two sets of laughter, two voices.
It’s Fiyero and Elphie, and while Galinda can’t see them, she can hear them laughing.
She flies to the door, pushes it open, and two sets of eyes rest on her.
It is indeed Fiyero and Elphaba, sitting on Elphaba’s bed. He’s sitting behind her, his fingers around a lock of her hair. Actually, hair splays around them, around the whole bed, along with a few little combs.
“What….Fiyero, what are you doing?”
“We’re braiding!” It’s said almost jauntily, happier than she’s heard him in weeks.
“Braiding?”
Elphaba gives a smile, a different smile than usual. Almost shy.
“I had to fix some braids. Fiyero’s….helping me.”
Now Fiyero blushes, an entirely foreign look on him.
“I….well, Fae told me she had to fix her hair -”
“Fae?”
“And I thought…well, I have sisters. Maybe I could help. But it turns out these teeny little braids -”
He holds one up as an example. “Tougher than I thought. So I asked a few girls, learned a few things, and now…” He indicates the sea of hair around them. “It’s braiding day!”
Galinda stands, stunned, for a few minutes, while Fiyero and Elphaba turn back to each other, giggling about something.
“I’m…well, once braiding day is done, Fiyero….do you want to come back to the Ozdust? Pfannee said they’d send the boat.”
Fiyero indicates the pile around them. “Not tonight, Glin. Braiding night sometimes stretches into braiding early morning. Option on braiding afternoon.”
Elphaba sighs and stretches her back out, laying her head briefly back on Fiyero’s shoulder, and the blush at that is hard to miss. “Sorry, Galinda,” she says. “I mean, you can grab a braid too, if you want?”
Galinda is sure she means it genuinely, but something gives her the feeling she wouldn’t be entirely welcomed. So, backing out, she closes the door softly, to a chorus of laughs, and makes her way down to the boat, hoping the Ozdust can provide some clarity.
#my fics#Movies#Musicals#Wicked#Elphaba Thropp#Fiyero Tiggelar#Fiyeraba#I actually will not be accepting that he is NOT her braider#Or at least he stumblingly learned how to braid for her#I am not an expert but#Don't tell me that waist length knotless microbraids take no maitenance

When the stoner duo met Eddie they became the stoner trio (duh) and Steve keeps running into them doing Weird Stoner Shit™ which includes but is not limited to:
A stoned pile of limbs on the floor
Music discussions so elaborate theres not a single word he understands
Baking everything imaginable with weed and studying Joyce's recipe books like it's a chemistry project
"if we figure out how to put weed in pizza we're gonna be rich" and the kitchen disaster that followed
Teasing each others hair to oblivion for a metal makeover
Braiding each others hair
Giving Argyle tattoo sleeves with sharpies each working on their own arm
And Steve gets unreasonably jealous. He complains to Robin about it all the time: "What if he thinks Argyle has better hair than me?"
Meanwhile Eddie, weeping between his two bros, fingers wrapping strands of hair together: "I wish I could braid Steve's hair :'("

i want to write an article about how unethical and toxic the black hair styling community is. like i am so tired of stumbling on videos and tik toks of black women crying, ranting, etc over some stylist scamming them or canceling on them (and keeping the deposit), etc. like we should not be going through this by our own people.
#like a lot of hair stylist and braiders nowadays just doing it for the money#they don’t care for the the connections with their clients anymore#i been sticking to the african braiding shop near my house for years now and the experice#is so much better than what i used to be going through by booking with braiders i find on instagram or twitter#i literally text the lady that’s braiding my hair..get a set price…get an appointment time and day#and boom come to the appointment as is!#THEY EVEN FEED ME ALSO IF I’M THERE ALL DAY!
