Melanie’s Postpartum Soup

You don’t need ten fingers to count the ingredients in this recipe, it is simple, intentional and satisfying. Everything has been selected to warm the soul, rebuild strength and nourish the body. Within each ingredient lies a pearl of wisdom that when combined creates the perfect meal to be enjoyed after birth.

It may take some pre-planning, a good friend or family member, preferably one with a large thermos, to make this meal available to you after birth. While you are snuggling with your baby, the love hormones flowing, your body will be recovering with a steamy bowl of Postpartum Soup.

I promise it will be worth it!

The true power of this soup lies in the bone broth.

It is truly the foundation of this recipe and the key to nourishment during the postpartum period. Homemade bone broth using chicken, beef, pork or bison from organically raised and pastured livestock easily found at your local healthy grocery store, butchers or farm, makes this an especially restorative meal. It is super easy to make, cost effective and superior in nutrition. You can also use store bought organic, low sodium chicken or beef broth, but I encourage you to make your own. Broth freezes nicely, so make lots during your pregnancy and keep it in the freezer for future meals.  

Here is the recipe, as simple as promised – it really has only 6 ingredients if we are counting salt and pepper!

Melanie’s Postpartum Soup Recipe

8 cups bone broth

1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt

4 cups shredded spinach leaves

4 large pastured eggs

1- 2 teaspoons turmeric powder

ground black pepper to taste

optional: parsley or basil as a garnish

Directions

1. In a medium pot, bring broth to a simmer with 1 teaspoon of sea salt. Once the broth is simmering, add the shredded spinach and cook until tender, roughly 3 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk the eggs, 1/4 teaspoon sea salt, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and some black pepper to taste.

3. Once spinach is tender, slowly drizzle in the egg mixture while continuously whisking. This is what turns the egg into shreds. Once all the eggs are added, bring the soup to a final boil and let it simmer for a minute. Use the whisk to break up any large clusters of remaining egg.

4. Garnish the soup with chopped parsley or basil. Serve with orange slices and a warm cup of healing postpartum tea.

This is the perfect way to nourish and thank your body for everything it has accomplished!

A true Vegan delight !!! Green lentil and potato soup served with freshly made pita or flatbread – Turkish yeşil mercimek yemek 500 grams of dried green lentils 20 mls of olive oil 1-2 tablespoons of tomato purée or Salça 1 onion chopped 2 medium potatoes chopped into cubes 2-3 cloves of garlic sliced 1.5-2 litres of water Salt Sauté the onion in the olive oil untill translucent . Add tomato purée and cook for 2 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients, I like the taste of the garlic when it’s added later but you can also saute it if you prefer. Bring to the boil and then simmer untill cooked , around 25 minutes. Ingredients for the pitta 3 cups of all purpose flour 1 cup of water 1 teaspoon of baking powder Salt Method First of all prepare the dough mix for the bread by adding the dry ingredients together in a bowl and mixing. Add the water and bring together with a fork and then mould with your hands but very gently. If it doesn’t come together add a little more water. Set aside and cover. Roll out the pittas to about ½ to 1 cm thick depending on your preference and place into a hot dry frying pan and cook for a couple of minutes on each side. It will bubble up as shown in photo and that’s the time to turn. I have three big pots of this and a Crockpot going. Round one. #Broth to make #soup. My house smells so good. And I did go get the forgotten garlic. I can't make my "Fixes everything" Pegs Special Soup without it. For Christmas gifts for a few nearby and some who we are visiting during the holidays I am making my soup along with cranberry oatmeal cookies and banana bread. Some of my bestess things (intentional misspell). No one needs more junk in their homes. No one needs cutesy stuff I could buy them that isn't what they need or want. Everyone has their own tastes and some are expensive and books for that many people can get a bit much and even difficult. And wine and whatnot isn't always appropriate. So home made is what I went with. Since I did, I'm making a bunch of all three items to package together for some nearby and also elderly people who will be alone for the holiday.
