Crowley Facts Part 7: Crowley, Malleus and More
Crowley has possibly never once remembered to invite Malleus to a meeting, event or lecture: we see him forget Malleus in the Prologue, Book 2, Book 5 Malleus' own dorm vignette, Fairy Gala, Glorious Masquerade, Halloween, Port Fest, Crowley's own vignette and Vargas Camp 2.
In contrast, the faculty do not invite Crowley to a Halloween party in Spectral Soiree, not due to having forgotten him but because they possibly did not want him to attend.
In a vignette Sebek asks if Crowley has made an appointment with Malleus and Crowley responds, "Am I not allowed to speak to my own students without an appointment?"
At the start of Glorious Masquerade, Crowley goes to Malleus personally with the information that NBC has invited him to the social.
Crowley explains that they flattered him with the comment, "Only a headmage of your caliber could nurture such a great and powerful mage" and Sebek takes offense, saying, "You weren't the one to nurture Malleus! He's standing right here--" in reference to Lilia.
Crowley gives the students permission to use offensive magic against Malleus at the beginning of Book 7.
During Wish Upon a Star Crowley comments, "a sudden burst of thunder like that certainly does a number on one's nerves."
Crowley says that the school may have seven or nine wonders, but he can't quite remember how many because "they come and go every year."
Crowley says that he is "rather dexterous," so the claws on his glove have never especially inconvenienced him.
Crowley says that greeting the students every day is a part of his morning routine and, while they ignore him most of the time, it doesn't both him because "grown-ups have thick skin."
Crowley says he prefers showers over baths, and is usually in and out within three minutes. But he takes plenty of time for personal grooming and self-massage afterwards: "After all, it's expected for adults to be presentable."
Vargas says that no one has seen Crowley without his mask, encouraging the prefect to ask nicely and keep trying even if they fail, because Crowley is "a good-natured guy."

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., is being hit with a censure resolution on Tuesday after she referred to some Jewish students as "pro-genocide" during a recent visit to Columbia University.
Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., is introducing the resolution against Omar on Tuesday, a source familiar with his plans told Fox News Digital.
The New York City Ivy League school has been the flashpoint for nationwide demonstrations on college campuses, where students have set up tent encampments to protest their universities' financial ties to pro-Israel companies.
COLUMBIA FACULTY ATTEMPT TO BLOCK CERTAIN STUDENTS, PRESS FROM ENTERING ENCAMPMENT UNTIL POLICE CALLED
Omar's daughter was one of more than 100 Columbia students and young adults attending its sister school, Barnard College, who were arrested over their encampment last month.
The progressive "Squad" Democrat visited the demonstration on April 26 in a show of solidarity for the pro-Palestinian protesters.
"I actually met a lot of Jewish students who are in the encampment, and I think it is really unfortunate that people don't care about the fact that all Jewish kids should be kept safe," Omar told Fox 5 New York while there. "We should not have to tolerate antisemitism or bigotry for all Jewish students, whether they are pro-genocide or anti-genocide."
Bacon's resolution text said Omar's "slanderous comments against Jewish students could inflame violence against the Jewish community."
In addition to censuring her for those comments, Bacon's resolution also accused her of having "a long and demonstrated history of hateful rhetoric that plays into the worst antisemitic tropes."
Omar has long been targeted by Republicans for her criticism of Israel. It even got her removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee last February when the GOP won back the majority in the 2022 election.
Bacon told reporters last week, "To generalize, to say that the Jewish students are responsible for this and treat them that way, that is antisemitism, right? It's one thing to protest Israel, but to stretch it over and accost Jewish students is wrong."
"I'm working on a bill right now to call out Omar for what she said. She's talking about pro-genocide or anti-genocide Jewish students…all this talk is all wrong because Jewish Americans are Americans. Quit treating them that way," Bacon said.
Fox News Digital reached out to Omar's office for comment.
A spokesperson for Omar told Axios last week regarding Bacon's comments on preparing a censure resolution, "Attempts to misconstrue her words by drafting this baseless resolution are meant to distract from the ongoing violence and genocide occurring in Gaza and the large antiwar protests happening across our country and around the world."
Escalating tensions at the protests at Columbia and elsewhere have spurred bipartisan criticism amid multiple clashes between students and police, resulting in reports of people on both sides being injured. Jewish students at Columbia and other schools have also reported feeling unsafe on campus.

!cw for mpreg/omegaverse, teen pregnancy and bullying!
wanted to share more of my hcs on tumblr, so here’s some of 🐺🍎 expecting while still attending NRC
❀ jack and epel weren’t exactly in a relationship…they were horny teens messing around whenever they could, particularly when they should have been studying. it was kind of an open secret they were hooking up, but jack and epel would always get flustered and deny it when it’s brought up
❀ they find out they’re expecting through rook lol, he’s the first to notice epel’s scent/weight changing (which creeps everyone out because epel isn’t even a month along. dude stop sniffing everyone). rook mentions it nonchalantly when he fetches epel from the savanaclaw dorm after his “study” session with jack…it causes quite the scene
❀ there’s quite a bit of drama. their house wardens get involved and meetings with the faculty and their families have to be arranged. everyone is supportive, but epel requests some distance from jack bc he’s unsure what he wants, which jack begrudgingly accepts, but not before assuring epel he will respect whatever decision epel makes. (epel will decide to keep it).
❀ eventually gossip starts to spread through pomefiore due to epel’s roommate noticing his belly growing and the rest of the dorm noticing vil and rook’s increased protectiveness. vil and rook tries to snuff out the gossip for epel’s sake, but it eventually spills out to the entire campus
❀ epel gets bullied. a lot. especially by his dorm mates. when epel’s hormones become at an all time high the bullying starts to affect him more than he’d like to admit. vil and rook try to deal with it, but most of pomefiore thinks epel is ruining the dorms image and wants him gone. epel tries to hide it from jack, but eventually jack catches him crying alone in the bathroom during lunch
❀ jack gets in a fight with someone bad mouthing epel, leading to leona finding out what’s been going on. the bullying seemingly stops overnight, and the bullies won’t even look at epel anymore. but now if jack isn’t around epel, a savanaclaw student is always keeping an eye on him (and helping him carry stuff later on in the pregnancy)
❀ later on, when epel has trouble sleeping in his dorm, yu offers a room at ramshackle so he can properly nest. jack can also spend the night to snuggle/scent epel and also get frisky bc jack’s instincts are going haywire seeing epel pregnant with his pup(s). it doesn’t help epel’s chest is growing too
❀ both of them become somehow hornier. it becomes an issue when they sneak in between classes to “hang out”
❀ eventually when a longer break rolls around, jack and his family visit epel’s village to officially meet him…where they find epel, very pregnant and operating a tractor
❀ their families get along, but jack’s siblings and epel’s cousin become friends pretty quick. they keep asking about a wedding, which always make the adults laugh and jack and epel flustered
❀ epel’s village is already preparing for the baby. they already refurnished a little house for the epel (since his family home is already croweded), complete with all the necessities for a baby, made right in the village. jack’s family is in shock at how many stuffed animals have been made for one baby
❀ i was thinking they’d have triplets, but poor epel..maybe their first is just one, and when they’re older they’ll have triplets. i’m still. it sure yet
❀ rook is probably epel’s strongest support at NRC. he massages every ache and indulges any food craving epel has. it makes jack a bit jealous epel is more than happy to assure him through sex
❀ vil makes sure epel is active and does yoga with him (epel isn’t a fan, but he silently thanks vil when his labor is only a few hours)
❀ the pup is born a bit early near the end of the school year in the infirmary. the louder epel’s cursing and screaming becomes, the more guilty jack feels for knocking him up
❀ jack leaves briefly, asking ruggie to hold epel’s hand…which epel nearly breaks by the time jack come back two minutes later
❀ the pup(s?) comes out with little issue, and when jack sees their pup in epel’s arms for the first time he bursts into tears. and when he gets to hold the pup(s) he’s astonished how tiny they are..they looked bigger when epel held them, but jack could almost hold them with one hand
thanks for reading! that’s all for now but i may come back to this again when i have more ideas, prolly abt jackpel being parents while attending NRC ;)

*Authors note~ Reader will be based off the same information as my oc daughter or Queen regina. Teacher at the school not fitting into either Category. *
Prompt~ reader gets hurt protecting the students from some kind of danger. Lesso is there and feels completely helpless knowing what she has to do is going to cause more pain. Established but private relationship between reader and lesso.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ever since you escaped from your mother's torturous reign, you realised you were a magnet for trouble. No matter where you go or what you do, trouble seems to find its way to you. Being the first ever professor with a class full of both Evers and Nevers, you knew you were in for some challenges. Never in your wildest dreams did you expect this.
A pain filled gasp left your body as you felt the cool metal of the knife entering your abdomen. Instantly the pain radiates through your exhausted body in tidal waves with enough force to wipe out cities in one wave. Yet you still continue to fight, knife still in your abdomen, you are the last hope.
Now you maybe wondering how you're alone in this battle. Well it's quite simple. Every other members of the faculty were supervising the annual ball. A hall in which you were also meant to be supervising. Growing up as a princess, you'd had your fair share of balls and knew just how tedious they could be. So it was only natural that you managed to slip away for a breather. Not a luxury you had when you were attending the balls with your mother. It was then when you stood leaning on the railing of the balcony that overlooked the blue forest, that you heard the screams of terror. A sound you recognised well, after all Queen Regina was well know for instilling terror into everyone in her path. The screams seemed to get louder as you could now hear the fear of those screaming. Your heart started to race immediately. What the hell was going on?
You slipped your heels off and quietly wondered to the door where you peaked your head round the corner to assess the situation. What met you was disturbing at least. All the other adults in the school had been frozen by magic. Similar magics to which your mother has running rampant through her veins. You knew it well enough to know it's an ancient form of magic. One that can't be wielded easily, it came with a terrible price. After all that is what all magic did. This magic wasn't something you could be born with, which is why I made sense when you caught a glance at the wielder. Rafal. You could've swore he was dead. But with his power? It's highly possible he could come back? Right? It's the only way that made sense. He continued his attack on the students that desperately were trying to hold him off, protecting the immobilised adults. Your heart swelled slightly seeing both never and ever students work together. After all unity was what you were striving for here. Clearly something that Rafal was against.
Panic bubbled in your chest as Rafal had Tedos up in the air, an expression of pain adorned his face as Rafal started to restrict his breathing. You knew how it felt first hand to have your breath taken away. It's that moment you were spurred into action.
"RAFAL!" You boomed over the frantic screams.
"Oh look! It's the spawn of Queen Regina, you must thank her for bringing me back." He goaded you dropping the prince harshly to the floor. He made his approach to you as you signalled for Agatha, Tedos and Sophie to get everyone to safety. It was going to be hard enough watching your own back let alone that of the students too.
"Tell her yourself Rafal, why are you here? What do you want?" You managed to fake a confidence that you most certainly didn't have right now.
"Oh sweet Y/n I'm here for you. These are merely a warm up" he gestured to your colleagues. The mischievous glint in his eye scarring you. No now wasn't the time for fear. You had to stop this.
"Me ? What could you possibly want with me?" You questioned even though you were pretty sure what he wanted.
Advancing towards you he stated, "To bring you back to your mother of course. You see she fixed my unfortunate issue. Gave me a heart that beats. And in return I pledged my allegiance to her. Together we will reign our evil over all kingdoms. But not until I bring you home."
"She's no mother to me!" You all but screamed "and I will not return Rafal you won't succeed and I won't allow you too hurt anyone else here." With that you just dodged an attempt he made to grab you.
"Why must you be difficult Y/n! She said you would be. And if you wouldn't come willing then I should end you once and for all. Weakness isn't something she wants and you my dear Y/n are her weakness." He all but snarled at you. Only then did you catch sight of your mothers infamous dagger. Knowing her it was probably dipped in a poison of sorts. Adrenaline running rampant through your veins you continued to counter any attacks he made. Never attacking only defending. An Ever tack tick you tried to live by. Harming people made you feel physically I'll, despite them deserving it or not. There was no way out of this. You'd have to attack. Although unwilling it was the only way. This was quickly becoming a life or death situation. For the good of the school and all those in it you would have to act unlike yourself.
More rapid attempts to grab you and distract you from enough to use the dagger were made. Only furthering your idea this poison was only meant for you. Otherwise Rafal would use the dagger more freely. He's being way too carful with it. The next moments are all blur as you feel the knife entering your abdomen. Your own magic working internally to counteract the poison. You were the only one who knew of your healing magic, but this wound was too deep to heal as well as Counteracting the poison, pain radiating from your wound was exhausting your body. With one last attempt to end this, you pushed through the pain, grabbing a fallen sword you made your way to where the professors were. You were met with the back of a gloating Rafal. So sure of your demise he didn't even check before gloating. Oh the irony. A scream ripped through his body as the sword pierced straight through the stolen heart. Two people died at that exact moment. The real Owner of the heart and Rafal.
Smoke surrounds his lifeless form, slowly moving it and causing the magic he has used to dissipate. Only then did you allow your body to fall backwards. Bleeding out all over the floor, exhaustion claiming every fibre of your being you finally allowed your eyes to close in a response to the overwhelming pain.
You must have passed out. The only logical explanation really. Blood slowly spilling out onto the cold ballroom floor. Dragged still wedged into your abdomen. Pain seemingly getting worse if that was even possible. It was the voice of your secret lover that brought you round. Dazed, you tried to move to her, blinking rapidly trying to work out which one of the three was real.
"Oh god! That's a lot of blood. Y/n stay with us" the voice of an angel spoke. Your angel. It all sounds wrong. You could practically hear the tears in her voice. Instinctively, you tried to pull yourself upright to find her. She was hurting.
"Little dove, please stay still. Don't move for me." She choked out knowing she'd have to stop your bleeding. Frantically calling out to Dovey, she took a hand to your hair stroking it gently hoping to provide a small bit of comfort as Dovey made her way to help. The other professors running to grab supplies to help. Vaguely you were aware of Dovey taking the position near your head and gasping in shock at how deep the wound looks.
"L-Leo I-it h-hu-rts" you whimpered out you knew you'd die if the dagger remained there but the thought of removing it just seemed impractical. The bleeding would increase as will the pain.
"I know my love, I know." Her tone soft and gentle for a second before addressing Dovey "I need you to try keep her as still as you can. It's important she can't move or she'll do more damage."
Dovey placed her hands to stabilise your head and shoulders. Fingers gently rubbing the skin there. "Hold still baby, hold still for me my little one." Her tone desperately pleading you to obey. She was begging you. And you wanted so desperately to obey.
"I - I c-can't! I c-can't" you whimpered out through your panicked breaths. It was then you felt the foreign object leaving your body causing you to dig your heels into the ground, back arched, head attempting to fall back as a cry of pure agony left your quivering lips. Wordlessly Dovey and Lesso swapped places allowing Lesso to come to comfort you. Dovey held down on the wound, applying enough pressure hoping to contain the bleeding. Your cries of pure agony shattering your girlfriend's heart, you could feel her salty tears hitting your cheeks as she attempted to keep you still enough for Dovey.
"Breathe y/n"
"You did so good little dove"
"Almost there darling."
"I have you sweetheart. Stay with me"
"Let me see those beautiful eyes, that's it good girl. Keep looking at me" lesso whispered out on a loop.
Yet again the pain got worse. How's that possible? Jesus you would take death over this. Teeth clenched you hissed out in pain as Dovey started to stitch your wound. Whimpering quietly you hoped she couldn't hear you. You knew it had to be done. She was helping you but right now all you knew was she was hurting you. Another stitch followed with a hissed "fuck" directed to the dean of good.
"Little one? Breathe okay? Breathe it will be all done soon"
"Good girl just like that you're doing amazingly." Lesso reassured while watching what Dovey was doing to you. You could feel the intensity of her staring at your abdomen. A particularly sensitive spot had you screaming out in agony. "L l lesso it hurts fuck it hurts"
"I know love I know I'm right here darling, such a good girl. You saved us all y/n. I love you so much just keep still for me almost there" she reassured you as you lost consciousness once more. The pain just being too much for your exhausted and battered body to handle.
When you felt yourself being brought back to the land of the living you could feel you had moved locations. Instead of the cold hard floor you were placed into a soft warm material. It smelled of the one scent that could only be described as Leonora. Pain still radiating from your abdomen made you glance down and see the slightly bloody bandages. Next to you lay Leonora eyes screwed shut in what looked to be a anything but peaceful slumber.
"You're up?" Was the unmistakable voice of your friend Dovey. Nodding was all you could manage.
You looked at Lesso questioning Dovey with your eyes.
"Only the past hour. She wouldn't sleep not wanting you to be alone in case you woke. So I told her I'll sit and watch over you both. Oh and check on your bandages." She glanced down and frowned. "Y/n those are quite bloody I only changed them an hour ago, you need to take these." She states handing you some pain reliving flower petals. Fully aware of how disgusting yet powerful these are you complied. A hiss of pain escaping as you tried to sit yourself up. That hiss woken your girlfriend who shot up in a panic.
"Y/n! Are you okay? Dovey?"
"I'm here lesso, y/n was just sitting to take some pain relief. Your both safe. Now settle down both of you. I'll be back to check in on you soon. After all someone has to sort out the Evers." Dovey commanded and informed you both. Yet you realised she didn't say Nevers. Although they were stereotypically evil you knew they'd be worried out of their minds.
"And nevers hmm scared" you mumbled out. You forgot how fast acting this was. Words were slurring as you fought to stay awake enough to hear the reply.
"And the Nevers now rest both of you." She reassured you and with that you feel back into a medicated slumber.
Words~ 2178
*Authors note ~ this was so sad to write but I absolutely loved the prompt. Comforting lesso is adorable*
How does your school work? You've mentioned a lot of interesting things about it, and now I'm really curious.
I'd be more than happy to explain! Though I can't promise to cover every interesting thing I've said because I've forgotten them all. It is a pretty cool situation that works out great for me, but if you have any questions--about my school, college in general, etc--I'd love to answer! (started over explaining, but hopefully it makes sense)
Essentially, it's a dual credit high school. I can't speak to how it works at other high schools, but my understanding is typically they might have a dual credit program where students can choose to participate in dual credit. The difference here is that my entire school is dedicated to that specific concept, built around it. Here, there is no option but to participate; it's why you go here.
Dual credit means that we're earning high school and college credit at the same time, so I've been taking college courses at an official community college since 9th grade. All of it is paid for my district, I don't have to pay for the college education.
The way it works, instead of electives (like spanish, drama, art, etc.) at a typical high-school, our electives are our college courses. These can be things like the normal electives, but they can also be things like philosophy, culinary classes, welding, etc. These classes count double, both towards the high school side of things and the college side of things--hence dual credit!
The only courses the high school offers itself are the basics, like math, english, history. They're condensed into semester long courses to match the college, and everything else is college. As you progress through any high school you need less core classes (e.g., I only had PE the first year, next year it was an open slot for an elective) and can take more electives, so your schedule also gets more free.
Right now, I'm a senior in high school, so I only have one class a day. This semester, I only had English, and next semester I'll only have Econ/Gov. I finished my math credits before 10th grade, and there's no more required science or history. So during the school year I go for an hour and a half (that's the length of one period), do my class, and then go home. (freshman have a full school day, and it gets less with each year).
The time you save you can put towards the college courses you're taking. A certain number are required each semester (with one high school class, 3 college are required. with 2 high school 2 college are required, etc.) so you count as a full student, but you can take more than that. If these classes are in person, then you'll attend them when they're held and do the work like any other homework. I've personally elected to take all my courses online because it's less draining for me, so I just go home and do my work.
My school is structured in such a way that the goal for all students entering is to graduate high school with a two year degree or a certificate, though that's not the limit. I've personally already earned several degrees.
It's also an incredibly small and close-knit school. You get in via a raffle, so you apply then they randomly select students to get in. There's about 60 kids in my grade level (if it was full there'd be 72), and almost all of us have been here since 9th grade so we're all familiar with each other. We've been taking classes together for four years. I will say that unless you're directly involved with student government or something, you won't know shit about the other grades. You only know your own because our schedules don't let us mix. And since it's so small, the teachers all know us pretty well. It's a lax and friendly atmosphere, treating us like adults in college instead of kids preparing for college.
The principal knows all our names and she jokes around with us, same with all the other faculty. The other day the principal and vice principal were standing next to the stairs talking and I passed them by, and they called to me and joked, saying, "Quil, we hear you only have a 104 in english, you better step it up!" and they complimented some of the art they'd seen for an assignment I'd done. My 10th grade English teacher gave me books from her personal collection to read and I gave her a few from mine. Even this one teacher I never had (he's new this year and teaching a grade below me) knows about me (though that may be because I'm an accomplished student, so staff tend to hear about me).
I'm probably missing something, but that's the gist of it! I take core classes at the high school, and college courses that count for college and elective credits. This gives me an incredibly free schedule (that doesn't match the rest of the district) with a personal, relaxed environment. And it's all paid for!
It's definitely not for everyone, but it's wonderful for me because I don't have to be in a place for an extended period of time and all the teachers are more than accommodating when I use fidgets and earplugs. Couldn't imagine going anywhere else :)
#quil lore#quil's queries#nonsie#i may complain about classes or school sometimes but I do genuinely love it here#one downside is that because we're so small there are no ap courses#all the high school courses are general. but I think it's a worthy exchange for a free college education#and that lax thing applies to dress code and phone policy#it's less they set rules it's more they trust you to enforce your own rules and be respectful#so no ones worried about clothes we're all focused on other things#and for phones it's like yeah you can have them but different teachers have different boundaries#and if you don't pay attention thats your own doing#which is how I'm able to do my 'posting live from english class' things#because I'll pick a moment its quiet and I have time without missing anything to pop out my phone and type something up#it's a very nice school and situation
➽ lux et veritas! welcome to yale, ( MARIENNE HUGO ). you’re a ( PROFESSOR ), aren’t you? your form says you’re ( 31 ), go by ( SHE/HER ), and excel in ( PHILOSOPHY ). but looking back at your college essay, i’d describe you as ( THE SMELL IN THE AIR BEFORE A STORM; A STRING WRAPPED AROUND YOUR FINGER; SOFT CASHMERE BLANKETS; DEEP THOUGHT AND DEEPER GAZES ). keep out of the shadows!
baseline.
full name: marienne louise hugo neé harris nickname: mari, ri, lou name meaning: liberty/equality affiliation: none (uncommons eventually) age: thirty-one date of birth: november 27 star sign: sagittarius place of birth: athens, georgia current location: new haven, connecticut gender: cis-female pronouns: she/her sexual orientation: demisexual religion: philosopher occupation: philosophy professor family: john harris (father), marie harris (mother), TBA Harris (younger sibling, WC), TBA Harris (younger sibling, WC), ian hugo (husband), verona hugo (daughter) education level: graduated from yale with a masters degree in philosophy living arrangements: cheap faculty housing near campus with ian hugo and verona hugo financial status: middle-class spoken languages: english, latin, greek, mandarin personality: (-) dogged, easily distracted, flippant (+) intelligent, loyal, passionate
inspiration.
bio.
marienne was born in athens, georgia to her parents john and marie.
she has two younger siblings (both of whom are WC and genderless until taken up)
she was always a smart, precocious, and sometimes too invasive child.
the wonders of the universe have always fascinated her.
she worked very hard in school to get things done and make a path for herself.
her dream was to study philosophy at yale and she succeeded in that dream thanks to opportunities afforded to her by her hard work.
after attending yale and graduating with a masters in philosophy she spent a lot of time studying and learning.
eventually she applied for a professor position at yale and with the right certification was hired on.
she met Ian Hugo during the beginning of her teaching years, having sat with him at a coffee shop by happenstance and ranted for a long time about philosophy, so much so that he was forced to just stare in awe of the amount she was getting out (and the fact that he was a bit smitten)
she noticed this after a bit and laughed it off, offering him a chance to talk about his passions (which he did, teaching her more about literature outside of the philosophy books she trended towards) and after that they formed a close friendship.
it didn’t take long for them to end up on an actual date, and from there romance blossomed. Ian was a part of the uncommons but marienne had (and has) no idea as of yet.
the two were married a few years in to their relationship and have been together since.
they have a young daughter named Verona who is the spitting image of the them put together (and a little bit a potato because all babies look like potatoes)
marienne’s curiosity has drawn the attention of the uncommons and they now have designs on recruiting her and want her husband to help.
she has never once believed that everything is hunky dory at yale and has long suspected SOMETHING. maybe not demons (though she’s open to the possibility) but something was very wrong with the school.
these are just quick notes I have a lot more in my head sksksk
wanted connections.
best friend — obviously her husband is her best friend for all intents and purposes, but generally you need someone outside of that that you bounce ideas off of. Can be any adult around her age from town or the university (professor or not) and I’d really be tickled if they were secretly a demon and she hadn’t like gotten suspicious at all yet! This is the person she goes to when stuff is tough (this is a WC on the main but can be filled in game if someone really wants to)
younger siblings — both were able to get into Yale, one is more thrilled about it than the other, but Marienne leaves her home open to both of them to come and go as they please. Whatever their affiliation, it doesn’t matter. Gender doesn’t matter. It’s a WC on the main!
coffee buddy — someone who likes when Marienne gets on a tear about philosophy. It could be one of her students or another professor or anyone in between, but they meet up for coffee once or twice a week and ask Marienne questions for her to be able to ramble on for a bit.
rival — professional or otherwise, this person just doesn’t like Marienne. Whether they were into Ian and she ended up with him, whether they think her class is ridiculous in the grand scheme of things (and are firmly grounded in their thoughts), or whether they just straight up don’t like her for whatever reason, they’ve formed a rivalry with Marienne which she feels, and while she doesn’t go out of her way to participate, she won’t sit back and be abused either.
anything and everything, just hmu if you have ideas.
How Boarding Schools Help Young Students Thrive: A Comprehensive Guide
How Boarding Schools Help Young Students Thrive: A Comprehensive Guide
Choosing the right educational path for a child is one of the most significant decisions parents can make. Among the numerous options available, boarding schools often stand out as an intriguing and beneficial choice. While some may envision strict regimens and isolated environments, modern boarding schools have evolved to offer a nurturing and dynamic setting where young students can truly thrive. This comprehensive guide explores how boarding schools provide an environment that fosters academic excellence, personal growth, and lifelong friendships.
The Academic Advantage
Rigorous Curriculum and Expert Faculty
Boarding schools are renowned for their rigorous academic programs that challenge students to reach their full potential. The curriculum is often more advanced than that of public schools, with a focus on critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. Small class sizes ensure personalized attention, allowing teachers to cater to individual learning styles and needs.
Moreover, boarding schools attract highly qualified and passionate educators who are dedicated to their students' success. These teachers not only impart knowledge but also serve as mentors, guiding students through their academic journey and beyond.
Enriched Learning Environment
The immersive learning environment at boarding schools extends beyond the traditional classroom setting. Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including science labs, art studios, and libraries. This enriched environment encourages hands-on learning and exploration, enabling students to delve deeper into subjects of interest.
Furthermore, the integration of technology in education is a hallmark of many boarding schools. Interactive whiteboards, online resources, and digital classrooms prepare students for the demands of the modern world, ensuring they are technologically adept and ready for future challenges.
Personal Development and Independence
Building Self-Reliance and Responsibility
One of the most significant benefits of attending a boarding school is the development of self-reliance and responsibility. Living away from home requires students to manage their time, complete chores, and handle personal responsibilities independently. This experience fosters a sense of maturity and self-discipline that serves them well in college and adult life.
Boarding schools also emphasize character education, teaching values such as integrity, respect, and perseverance. These lessons are woven into daily interactions and activities, helping students develop a strong moral compass and a sense of ethical responsibility.
Enhancing Social Skills and Emotional Intelligence
Living in a close-knit community with peers from diverse backgrounds enhances students' social skills and emotional intelligence. Boarding school students learn to navigate complex social dynamics, resolve conflicts, and build meaningful relationships. These skills are invaluable in both personal and professional settings.
The support system at boarding schools is robust, with counselors, advisors, and dorm parents available to provide guidance and assistance. This network ensures that students have the emotional support they need to thrive in a new environment.
Extracurricular Excellence
Sports and Physical Development
Boarding schools place a strong emphasis on physical education and sports, recognizing the importance of a healthy body in fostering a healthy mind. Students can participate in a variety of sports, from traditional team games like soccer and basketball to individual pursuits like tennis and swimming.
Engaging in sports helps students develop teamwork, leadership, and resilience. It also provides a necessary balance to academic pursuits, ensuring that students maintain a well-rounded lifestyle.
Arts and Creative Expression
The arts play a pivotal role in boarding school education. Whether it's music, theater, visual arts, or dance, students have ample opportunities to explore and express their creativity. These programs not only enhance artistic skills but also boost confidence and self-expression.
Performances, exhibitions, and competitions are regular features in boarding schools, providing students with platforms to showcase their talents. This exposure to the arts fosters a lifelong appreciation for culture and creativity.
Lifelong Friendships and Networking
Forming Deep Connections
The bonds formed in boarding school are often deep and enduring. Living and learning together creates a unique camaraderie among students, leading to friendships that last a lifetime. These connections provide a support network that extends far beyond the school years.
Alumni Networks and Opportunities
Boarding school alumni networks are powerful and far-reaching. Graduates of boarding schools join a global community of successful individuals who are often eager to support and mentor current students and recent graduates. This network opens doors to internships, job opportunities, and professional growth.
Boarding schools offer a transformative experience that helps young students thrive academically, personally, and socially. The combination of rigorous academics, personal development, extracurricular activities, and a supportive community prepares students for success in college and beyond. By choosing a boarding school, parents can provide their children with an education that not only imparts knowledge but also shapes character, fosters independence, and builds lifelong connections.
From MIT to Singapore and back: Delivering knowledge and advancing careers in finance
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/from-mit-to-singapore-and-back-delivering-knowledge-and-advancing-careers-in-finance/
From MIT to Singapore and back: Delivering knowledge and advancing careers in finance
Both sections of MIT class 15.433 (Financial Markets), taught this fall by visiting associate professor of finance Hong Ru MFin ’10, PhD ’15 at the MIT Sloan School of Management, include over 100 students from the master of finance program. However, when he joined the program’s inaugural class just over a decade ago, this number was much smaller.
“I started in the program in 2009 and graduated in 2010, and there were only 26 students then. Not like today,” says Ru, who is an associate professor of banking and finance at Nanyang Business School. Along with his wife, Juno Wei Chen MFin ’10, Ru returned to Boston after eight years in Singapore to teach the next generation of MFin students at MIT Sloan.
Chen, a senior portfolio manager of the Global Asset Allocation team at Columbia Threadneedle Investments, says their return to Boston and MIT Sloan has been a “great pleasure.” It’s where they first met, where they started their careers in academia and finance, and where they got married.
Ru is especially grateful for the chance to give back to the program that introduced him to Chen and set the pair on their respective career paths, going as far as to describe it as the duty of alumni.
“It’s not just my obligation to deliver my knowledge as a lecturer but, as an MFin alumnus, to help students with their career development and to figure out what to do at this stage of their life and career. We have been there,” he says.
The place to be
Even without a major marketing push by the school in 2009, the pilot program for the master of finance degree garnered 179 applications.
Ru and Chen, who both attended universities in Shanghai but met for the first time when they matriculated at MIT Sloan, independently discovered the new program as they began researching potential graduate schools.
“There has been a very strong appreciation for the American education system, especially since the United States is one of the centers of the financial world,” says Chen.
Given her double major in finance and mathematics, applying to a school like MIT made perfect sense to Chen. This was the same conclusion that Ru, also a finance major, came to.
Not only did the Institute boast one of the top management schools in the world, but it also housed a very influential economics department, whose faculty and alumni include many Nobel laureates — like the late Paul Samuelson, the first American to win the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, and School of Management Distinguished Professor of Finance Robert C. Merton PhD ’70, whose office, as Ru excitedly points out, is right next to his.
“MIT Sloan was definitely the place to be,” says Ru. Out of all the applicants vying for a spot in the inaugural class, he and Chen were both admitted.
“MIT brought us together, and I feel very fortunate to have met so many people from all over the world. It’s a very small class, but it’s very representative of many different countries, regions, and cultural backgrounds,” says Chen.
Two different, complementary paths
As their classes began in 2009, Ru, Chen, and their classmates were experiencing the first global recession of their adult lives. Ru pointed this out to his 15.433 students during a recent lecture, saying his peers faced a financial reality in which the S&P 500 had lost nearly 50 percent of its total value.
Even so, Ru and Chen appreciate everything they were able to learn, both in their coursework at MIT Sloan and off campus at various site visits and joint projects with industry firms. This context also informed the two different, but complimentary career paths they eventually took.
During her undergraduate studies, Chen interned with McKinsey & Co. and a few financial institutions in Shanghai, from which she decided to further explore the possibility of a career in finance. She was able to focus her path at MIT Sloan, where her courses taught her quantitative financial analysis and qualitative business skills, and networking events hosted by faculties like Senior Lecturer Mark P. Kritzman introduced her to firms like State Street, where she landed her first job after graduation.
“Where I ended up is a result of my personal interests and where I got my exposure, my knowledge, and where opportunities opened up for me,” says Chen.
The same can be said for Ru, who received offers for industry jobs in Boston and Hong Kong after graduation. Yet his interest in more advanced studies had been piqued when he enrolled in several doctoral-level classes to supplement his master’s coursework — including one taught by the late Stephen Ross, the inventor of arbitrage pricing theory.
“All the professors I had at MIT, like Stephen Ross, Jiang Wang, Leonid Kogan, and Antoinette Schoar, really cared about their students. Not all professors are like that,” Ru says of the faculty who influenced him. “They’re very passionate about what they do.”
The next 10 years
Ru and Chen are elated to be back in Boston, both because it was their first home together and because it is now the home of their growing family. They are also excited to reunite with their classmates after a long hiatus.
Like many Institute alumni, Ru and Chen missed out on getting back together with old friends and former teachers because of the Covid-19 pandemic, as 2020 marked the 10-year anniversary of the inaugural master of finance class. Yet they are hopeful for future gatherings at their next class reunion in 2025, as well as other school functions.
“We miss our friends, but the program also has 14 classes now, so let’s get together and have some fun,” says Ru. “Come sit in on 15.433 and see how I’m doing.”
Hyung-jin Sean Moon did not graduate from Harvard College
Hyung-jin Sean Moon went to Fairfield University but did not graduate. He completed his first three years there with an undeclared major, then took the last couple of credits at the open enrollment (100% acceptance rate) Harvard Extension School to complete an undergraduate degree of A.L.B.
Note: The A.L.B. degree is NOT a B.A. degree. They are entirely different.
Bachelor of Liberal Arts (ALB) degree (artium liberalium baccalaureus).
Claiming to have an undergraduate B.A. degree from Harvard College which has a 5.9% acceptance rate (http://money.cnn.com/2012/03/30/pf/college/acceptance_rates_ivy_league/index.htm) when you really have an A.L.B. degree from Harvard Extension School which has a 100% acceptance rate, is outright fraud.
Harvard says this about the Harvard Extension School and Harvard College: There is a clear distinction. Harvard Extension School is not a school within Harvard College. Harvard College is a separate school and is one of the toughest undergrad schools to enter in the world. Harvard Extension School is free to anyone in MA that can pay the fees. Harvard College gives out “Bachelor of Arts (BA)” degrees, Harvard Extension gives “Bachelor of Liberal Arts (BLA)” degrees. It is misleading to say that I attended Harvard College if I attended Harvard Extension School.
Harvard College is perhaps the most well-known school within Harvard, and is the preeminent, full-time, residential liberal arts program for traditional-age college students who earn the Bachelor of Arts (AB) degree (artium baccalaureus).
In contrast, Harvard Extension School is a national leader in continuing education and offers both graduate and undergraduate programs, one of which is the Bachelor of Liberal Arts (ALB) degree (artium liberalium baccalaureus).
The Extension School is designed for the working adult population, whose average age is 35 and whose academic needs differ from students in the traditional college program.
While requirements for admission to the undergraduate program at Harvard Extension School differ from a traditional Ivy League program, the course work here is intellectually rigorous.
Please note that while Harvard Extension School credits cannot be transferred to Harvard College, qualified Extension School degree candidates in certain programs can take courses at Harvard College through the Special Student Program, and their Harvard College course credits count toward their Extension School degrees. _________________________________ This report was received: Harvard FAS Registrar’s Office From Barbara Sullivan Friday 17, August 2012 Subject: [FAS Registrar’s Transcripts Office #33524] Non-degree confirmation request
Our records here at Harvard indicate that Hyung Jin Moon was a Special Student in the Fall of 2002 taking 2 courses. This student cross registered into our Divinity School for three courses in 2004 & 2005. There is no record of this student having received a Bachelor of Arts degree at the Faculty of Arts & Sciences School.
7 Qualities to Look For When Choosing a University for Master’s in the UK
Are you planning to pursue a master’s degree?
For the majority of students, the UK's universities offering Masters programmes are a fantastic option. After all, the UK has a long history of producing top-notch academic institutions. At least 25% of the most renowned educational institutions worldwide are located there. And it shouldn't be shocking that the United Kingdom (which includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) is able to draw in close to 500,000 foreign students each year.
By deciding to pursue your further education in the U.K., you can get top-notch instruction while learning about the richness and beauty of British culture and honing your English. And while choosing a master's degree while studying in a UK university has many benefits and growth chances for both your career and personal development, this does not imply that you should attend any particular college or university. A Master's programme is a significant life choice that has to be carefully considered. As a result, before enrolling in a master's programme, you should check for a few characteristics.
What follows looks at seven characteristics you ought to consider while looking for an institution in the UK where you can study a Masters degree. Therefore, let's begin.
7 Qualities to Look for When Choosing a University for Masters in the UK
Earning your bachelor's degree is a significant accomplishment, but many people think that's where your education ends and that you still have a long way to go before you can advance in your career (and become an adult). A Master's degree can be useful in this situation. It gives you the chance to become an expert in a certain field, makes it possible for you to relocate, and gives you the sense of achievement that most professionals yearn for.
As a result, when selecting a university for a Master's in the UK, you must choose those that have the attributes that will enable you to achieve all of your personal and professional goals. Here are a few characteristics to consider while choosing a UK university for a master's programme.
1. Latest Course Curriculum Based on Updated Industrial Needs
Always select a university that modifies its curriculum in response to the shifting needs of industry while looking for a Masters degree in the U.K.
The institution will be better able to prepare students for the future of work with an upgraded curriculum. Additionally, a current course curriculum enables students to better prepare for obstacles in real life and equips them to face difficult circumstances. Additionally, earning a master's degree from a school that updates its curriculum on a regular basis is the only way to encourage students to continue their study after earning a master's degree, such as through postgraduate or Ph.D. research work on the same campus.
Therefore, choose a university that offers the most recent course curriculum when searching for a master's programme in the UK.
2. Offers Excellent Research Opportunities
Your first preference for a master's programme should be a university that provides good research possibilities. It's crucial that you develop a number of specialised abilities, such as planning, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving, when you move from a bachelor's degree to a master's degree. First thing I should probably establish here is that this happened pre-9/11, sometime in the late 90s, though I don’t remember exactly when. My family is Christian, but we were the sane kind of Christian; our church was adjacent to local university and mostly attended by its faculty. A few years after this story took place I would receive some legitimately forward-thinking sexual education from this church, including contact information for the nearest Planned Parenthood, and a few years after that some of the church elders would lead an ultimately futile campaign against the local school board’s decision to teach Bible classes in public schools.
My best friend at the time, however, was Baptist. I don’t know for certain if she was certified Deep South Baptist™ but they were undeniably one of the bigger churches in town. They held a lot of events for kids and my friend often invited me along, so I got to know quite intimately that their church building was huge, three stories tall plus a basement in a town where basements were practically non-existent. They had a gymnasium with a bounce house that the church owned, plus a playground that could be accessed from the building by way of a plastic tube slide that extended straight out of the third-story wall, its entrance just sitting at the end of a Sunday School hallway with a little hatch over it for safety.
This was a big, fancy church, is what I’m saying, and a lot of the people who went to it were rich, but y’know, not rich enough to not be living in Odessa fucking Texas. And if you know anything about Odessa fucking Texas beyond Heroes, Friday Night Lights, and that one post with the pickles, you know it is a miserable little scrap of a place in the ass-end of the desert, and not even the pretty or interesting parts of the desert. It’s 300 miles away from anything interesting and 500 miles away from the nearest ocean.
I set all of this up so you can properly understand the depth of the surreal confusion that swept through me when I, at approximately ten or eleven years old, arrived at this church for a sleepover “lock in” with my best friend, climbed out of her mother’s car, and looked up at a god damn boat that was taking up half the parking lot. It was a full sized, one hundred percent real yacht, one of those that’s designed for you to spend days out on the ocean in, just sitting there on a trailer with zero explanation.
See, the theme for this lock-in experience thing was international travel. Once we’d left our sleeping bags in our designated gender-and-age segregated sleeping rooms, we and our roommates were guided around the building by an adult minder to activity stations themed after various world cultures. Each of us had a little paper passport, and once we completed each station, we’d get a rubber stamp saying we’d been through that place in the world.
I don’t remember most of the activities too clearly. One involved us eating fake McDonald’s fries, but I don’t remember why. Another was just an excuse to give our group thirty minutes in the bounce house, because they used literally any excuse to bring out the bounce house and to be fair it was the best part.
There’s only two parts I remember super strongly, because in retrospect they were both pretty fucked up. The first came at midnight, when they gathered all of the groups together into the basement, where they’d set up a “bazaar” where each stand sold a different kind of snack – one had juice, another apples, another crackers, bananas, cookies, etc. They gave us all Monopoly money, but not enough to buy one of everything at their listed price. If we wanted one of every snack, we had to haggle for it – they told us that explicitly. And the entire time, the adults manning the booths were dressed like and pretending to be stereotypical… I think Asian or African? merchants. Despite all being white people.
This did not work for me. I was an extremely picky eater, and shy, and knew in my gut that asking a merchant to lower their prices when I could obviously afford to budget for exactly what I wanted anyway was both a waste of time and extremely rude. And so despite the merchants trying to pressure me into haggling, I just paid for my food and sat down to eat it, hoping the sugar would wake me up a bit. Because see, at the time, I was a morning person who was usually in bed by 9, a stark contrast to my night owl bestie. I had known that the goal of this lock-in was to stay up all night long but I was already fading fast.
So by the time we got to the final station of the night, I was exhausted. And this is the other one I remember because it was then, and only then, that I learned the purpose of the yacht in the parking lot.
It’s three thirty in the morning. The adults lead us out into the florescent-lit parking lot and have us climb the ladder to reach the deck of the yacht. I think most of the group find benches to sit on but I can’t say for certain because by that point I'm too tired to open my eyes; I find a spot in the corner, curl up and close my eyes, and thus remember most of this through touch and sound.
They pass out life vests and make everybody put them on. One of the adults gets behind the wheel of the boat and starts operating a sound effects tape, while the other mom starts talking us through an imagination session of traveling across the ocean to visit a foreign country. We “arrive” and a third mom climbs onto the boat, talking in a deep voice with a heavy accent. I crack open my eyes to see her wearing a fake beard, a towel, and a bathrobe. I close my eyes again.
Bathrobe mom is giving a speech welcome us to “her country” when a bell sounds, which she declares signals that it’s time to get down on your knees and pray to Allah and Mohammad, a ritual which by law everyone in the country including visitors must participate. She insists that all of us join in as well.
"No!" declares one of the literal ten-year-olds, with a fervor that feels suspiciously like this is a favorite game she's played a lot and thinks she's really good at. "We could never do that! We only pray to God and Jesus!"
Before Bathrobe Mom can pull together a response to that, this girl whips all the rest of the ten-year-olds into a mob, all of them chanting, "We love Jesus! We love Jesus!" in unison.
I am not participating. I have pulled the life jacket over my head and am trying to smother both my ears and my eyes in its padding.
Bathrobe Mom finally manages to restore order, getting everyone to calm down and shuts up. She declares that if we will not obey the country’s laws, then she cannot grant us entry to that country, which is of course the correct course of action to take. Half the crowd of white ten-year-olds complains anyway. She goes around to each of us and stamps a big red “REJECTION!” onto the passport page, ruining our collection, as I’m sure the narrative of the evening was intended to convey.
Bathrobe Mom then presumably gets off the ship and the other moms congratulate the group on making the good Christian choice. They then explain very seriously that sometimes, in the real world, the punishment for disobeying the law in countries like that isn't just getting kept out, it could mean prison time, or even execution. We have to ask ourselves, if we were in that situation, could we be brave enough to stick to our guns and do the right thing?
They don’t bother to roleplay taking the ship back to town, it just kinda stops, and then the game of pretend is over. We finally go to bed, and I pass the fuck out, not to reexamine this memory and realize how fucking weird it is for fifteen years.
Have I ever told Tumblr the story of the time my friend's church made us (a group of approximately 10-year-old white American children) roleplay traveling to a Muslim country and refusing to follow their laws in the name of Jesus?
