Master Post - Gen's Top 100 DBDA Fics!

It is finally here! My personal top 100 DBDA fics!

My friends in the DBDA Haunt Discord server know that I am an avid fic reader. I read multiple hours every day and have read a very large chunk of all the DBDA fics out there (that are tagged Payneland). I constantly recommend fics in our fanfic channel and thought, "Well, why don't I make a huge rec list in recognition of how wonderful the fic writers of this fandom are?" And thus the idea for this list was born!

I have been working on this since the cancellation announcement almost 2 months ago. It has taken me that long to go back through my over 350+ DBDA bookmarks and select only the best of the best to be featured here.

Thank you to every fic writer in this fandom! You are all amazing and I love your work! Your creations are what keep the fandom alive and healthy!

Some caveats before we begin:

These fics are in alphabetical order by title.

I have a Payneland bias. All of these are Payneland fics. Maybe I will make a list sometime that has more ship variety, but for now, that is what is on the list.

I also have a very strong hurt/comfort & angst bias, so there will be a lot of that on here as well! But there are a few fluffy fics too!

There is no smut on this list. Sorry, smut just isn't my thing. There is exactly one fic rated E on here.

Not all tags are listed! I have selected the ones that I feel are the most important and in some cases added some that I felt were missing. But please read the full tag list on the fic itself!

I will be releasing 10 fics a day for 10 days, to make the posts more readable and to have some fun!

Love. 

An intense feeling of deep affection for someone. As a child, you didn’t understand the meaning of love. Back then to you, love was books and books were your love. Sure, you received ample love from your parents and loved ones. The sneaky glances your parents throw at each other during family gatherings, the way your father opens the door for your mother like a gentleman, the way he soothed the goosebumps on your mother’s delicate skin with his calloused hands whenever she got cold. It’s the way their hips sway to their ‘anniversary song’ that echoes your humble abode across your living room, looking at each other with so much love. 

That, to you, was love; your parents' love for each other. Not that you’d say it out loud, of course. But someday, you will find love like your parents.

Growing up on the outskirts of Tokyo, you had a lovely childhood and you couldn’t ask for more. But it was all in vain. After 20 years of a blissful marriage, along with 3 children, your parents had a divorce. You weren’t quite sure what happened because they felt really in love. It also hit you when your father had to move out alongside your two siblings, leaving you and your mother alone on the outskirts of Tokyo. 

You wanted to be mad when you found out that just after 2 months of being divorced, your father had found himself a newer and younger lover. Never had you felt so betrayed. You felt angry and sad, for your mother who hides her pain with a sweet smile, assuring you that she’s not affected by it. But in reality, you know it’s a facade when you can hear her muffled sobs every night. 

From then on, you didn’t believe in love and promised to never fall in love. Thus, you grew up finding solace and comfort deep inside your books.

After 2 years of your parent’s divorce, you met a boy.

In front of your mother, you pretended that falling in love was a sin, you confidently vowed to never fall in love but why does your heart skip a beat whenever you see the boy with disheveled black hair and dark blue eyes? Why does your hand get so sweaty whenever your fingers brush his? When you told your mother about the situation you were in with your big doe eyes, she couldn’t help but laugh saying you have developed a crush. 

A crush on a boy named Yuta Okkotsu? 

You first met Yuta at a local bookstore not too far away from your neighbourhood. Every day, at 2pm, without fail you’ll catch him reading in the corner of the store, giggling to himself. What a weird boy. Perhaps he was reading a comedy series? You didn’t know what came to you that day, the ground beneath your feet swept you towards that young boy’s direction. He slowly shifted his gaze from the book to you. 

Embarrassed, you struck up a conversation “uhhh hi! what book are you reading?”. 

You have been friends ever since. He’d meet you outside your door, waving your mom goodbye before racing each other to the bookstore. You visit there so often that the owner recognizes you two. Once, you fell asleep on Yuta’s shoulder while his cheeks were on top of your head with a book in hand. The owner, Ms Belle, cooed at the adorable sight.   

He spent so much time with you that he’s grown attuned to you and your little habits. The way you stomp your feet when something exciting happens – like when the main character decides to finally confess to his crush. He knows you like to run your fingers along the shelves. He knows how you hate folding the edges of your paper so for your 8th birthday, he got you a bookmark with your name engraved.

One word to describe you and Yuta would be inseparable. You’d do things together. You’d have a sleepover at his house on some nights, and some at yours. He knows how much you hate crowds, so he would hold onto your pinky while he leads you both to a more quiet, and safe place. 

You were 9 years old when you finally realised that you had a crush on Yuta Okkotsu. However, you were also 9 years old when you had your heart broken, by a boy besides your father. He had to move to the other side of the world, far from Tokyo, Japan. His absence left you all alone again. The worst part of all, you didn’t have a chance to tell him that you liked him.

Perhaps you were right. You won’t believe in love and promise to never fall in love. Although deep down behind closed doors, love –your parents once shared, was all you craved for.

10 years later. Everything has changed. You grew taller, no longer the shortest in class. Your voice matured. Everything changed, even the the childhood bookstore closed down when you were 11. You no longer have a crush on Yuta Okkotsu. Lies. You’ll remember him forever.

Glancing at your Apple Watch, it read 2pm. You had to meet your friends at 2.30pm at the train station but since you were already early, you decided to stop by the newly opened bookstore.

The distinct aroma of earthy with a hint of vanilla from the pages of books that were stacked neatly on a wooden shelf instantly made you relaxed, like you were at home. Like a muscle memory, you run your fingers along the shelves, a habit of yours while trying to find a book that catches your attention. Abruptly, your fingers came to a stop. Your eyes lingered on a certain book. You were so deep in the thought you didn’t realise someone coming up to you. 

“The Love Hypothesis, huh?” 

That voice. His voice was honeyed yet soft spoken.

You shifted your gaze to your right where the stranger is. He’s taller than you, but not that tall, his hair no longer disheveled. Black hair and dark blue eyes carrying a radiant gentle smile that could probably light up the sky. —the same smile he carried in the past.

Your eyes lit up. “Yuta Okkotsu?”

no trope and i mean NO trope will ever be better than both will and nico being catastrophically humiliatingly ninth circle of hell chipping away to find the tenth down bad for each other. and not doing anything about it for weeks. just constant thirsting and pining it is so so SO funny to me. that is their dynamic. and a fic where will just has an excuse to never wear a shirt and nico has an excuse (no he doesn't) to stare...they are so constantly real

Hi everyone! I am back from brink of death to bring you yet another platter of fic recs. Thank you all so much for you patience and for the continued love you all have shown these posts. I truly appreciate you all.

Also, just in case this has been bothering anyone: you will definitely see more author-diversity and newer fics as I work my way though my bookmarks. I'm working chronologically through my Sterek bookmarks from the oldest to the newest, so that means we're all currently reliving the early Sterek scene together while also getting to experience the moments where I would discover an author whose writing-style I particularly liked and then binged their entire body of work all at once before going back to the main tag's offerings (hence the large number of works by specific authors going on right now). Stiles is in profile, ranting on his phone to Scott about the contract negotiations for the new construction on the Peterson property, and there’s a flush on his face, his ears pink and his mouth red from where he keeps biting it but the worst thing, the absolute worst thing is the round curve of his stomach, straining against the tank top he liberated earlier in the week from Derek when the heat wave hit and none of his own fit him anymore. It’s going to be stretched to hell by the time the kid is born but right now Derek can’t find it in himself to care. 2. The Weapon You Choose (E | 1/1 | 12,029) When Noah trudges down the backstairs that morning, he finds Dad sitting on a step halfway down and chewing on his knuckles, watching Papa making coffee like it’s a special on the discovery channel and not an almost daily ritual. Anyway, Noah needs the car on Friday; he might as well make nice so he sits down next to Dad, jostling his shoulder with his own in greeting. Dad raises an eyebrow, mirth in his eyes and his mouth curving around the knuckle stuck in it. Papa grunts just then, still trying and failing to open the tin with the ground coffee in it and Dad head snaps around, once again riveted. Noah rolls his eyes hard but he guesses people who’ve been together since the dawn of time need to get their fun wherever they can find it. 3. Pancake Wolves (T | 1/1 | 1,394) Stiles is on his third cup of coffee when Derek tromps down the stairs. He looks at him over his shoulder, taking in his barely open eyes and the pillow creases on his face, unable to keep from smiling at him. Derek yawns widely and just keeps going until he can wrap his arms tightly around Stiles’ waist and lean against his back, letting Stiles take his weight.

He wasn’t always, back during his own Sturm und Drang period, but he married a firecracker of a woman and got a kid with an affinity for trouble like he got payed for ending up in it, so someone had to level out or they would’ve ended up living in a treehouse or Lapland doing god knows what. Anyway, getting a hold of his temper is one of John’s better life achievements. It makes him a good sheriff and it kept him from blowing his lid too badly those last two years when Stiles started acting out in a way that John had never seen before. But the temper is still there. He’s reminded of it when he comes home on a random Saturday in March after spilling his milkshake all over his uniform shirt only to notice he didn’t have a spare in the station and finds Stiles bend over the kitchen sink with hunched shoulders. 2. Life With Werewolves: A Beginner's Class (T | 1/1 | 2,836) Five times Sheriff Stilinski was really through with werewolves and one time he wasn’t. 3. Life With Humans: The Stilinski Edition (E | 1/1 | 10,036) “You still smell weird,” Derek says, pressing his nose against Stiles’ armpit, trying to figure out what about Stiles’ scent still bothers him so much. Stiles slaps his head and Derek nips the soft skin of his inner bicep in retaliation. “I,” Stiles says, still panting and shivering from his orgasm, “do not smell weird, you weirdo. Families: Eternally Messy (NR | 1/1 | 12,248) The third installment to the bride hunting fic that now involves pregnancy then babies, adult looking responsibilities, epic fails and proof no one picks their family.

I was tagged by @deadheaddaisy for a fun and great fic author game. Thank you for tagging me, @deadheaddaisy! ❤️ As happy as I am to be tagged, the thing is, y’all, I’ve done that particular game a few times already and, even though it’s a great game, I was in the mood for something different. So, I’ve made new questions — and answered them — and I’ve tagged some folks in case they want to answer them, too.

1. Why do you write fanfic?

Life can be stressful, and writing fanfic can be like a little vacation. It’s not my life, anymore, it’s the characters’ lives.

2. Which of your posted stories do you think about the most, even though the story is “finished”?

I think about Malleable and Unmalleable Orders (Mirror Pikeone, E) probably because it’s so different from what I usually write. I also think about The Light Before Dawn (Pikeuna, M) because, even though it would have bogged down the story, I do think they eventually get married and the details of all that sometimes cycle through my brain.

3. If you could give yourself fic advice from when you first started writing fic, what would that advice be?

Enjoy this time of not really knowing fic conventions or expectations.

4. What’s your relationship to fic stats?

I try to avoid them. I love every kudos and comment and bookmark and subscription. But I don’t go looking for the numbers unless I have to.

5. Is there a pairing or scenario or friendship you miss writing? If so, why? If not, why not?

I miss writing Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris. I had a lot of fun with that pairing for a while.

6. What motivates you to write?

If I don’t write the stories down, they get stuck in my brain. So I guess setting them free (in good ways) is my motivation.

7. Why do you write for the fandom(s) that you write for?

I really do believe in the ideals of Star Trek — IDIC and peaceful coexistence and all that stuff. Even though I often write for the spin-off series, not the original Star Trek, creating stories in that universe lets me be part of it, even in a small way. Also, as a bonus, I do think Trek readers are great about comments, kudos, etc., and that helps a lot.

8. If you’re stuck writing a WIP, what do you do?

I might work on something else or take a break. The problem will rotisserie in my head and probably work itself out if I don’t push it too hard.

9. What do you wish people knew about comments?

That any nice comment is welcome and appreciated and, if the person doesn’t want a reply to their comment, they can just say so and it’s easy enough for the author to honor their wishes.

10. Maybe there’s a question you wish had been on here. What’s that question (and answer)?

Chapter 10: Dad beat Dad pt. 2 Table of Contents | Profile

Word Count: 2300+ A/N: so many lore drops oh lordy. Should I post chap 11 in 9 hrs? Comment below lolol

“Husband, dear,” I called for him closing the door behind me.

I find him on the chair by the fireplace, reading a book with his glasses on. I join him, smoothing out his shoulders with a gentle touch which he gave a satisfied hum to.

“What is it?” he asks placing a bookmark and closed the book. He puts it on the side table holds my hand pulling me in front of him.

“I just came to tell you something Charlie has planned,” I say brushing his hair, “she’s inviting over her father to help with her situation.”

He tenses up, he pulls his lips into an annoyed grin. I tilt my head, confused why he reacted so strongly at the mention of Lucifer. So, I ask, “What’s wrong?”

His smile fades into a guilty one and replies, “Miledy, you know I love you with all my heart but I wish I could tell you.”

I fall silent, a million questions appearing in my head before I finally spoke up once again, “Is it related to why you were gone?”

He heaved a breath as he stands, dipping a kiss on my forehead then holds me briefly in a tight squeeze and replies, “Don’t worry, it’s nothing too dangerous. I won’t let anything happen to you, love.”

I gave a deep sigh, trying to calm myself from the piling frustration but I needed to keep it together and trust him. Like we always do.

Just then, the memories of him leaving Abby and I in the cabin never to return flashed in my mind. I clasped his dress shirt in distress, feeling sweat form on my back and my body shaking.

Alastor pauses and looks at me in deep worry. He holds my shoulders and tries to look me in the eye, “Love, love what’s wrong?”

I remain unresponsive feeling my leg lose their strength as I fall onto his arms never once letting go of him. We settled on the carpet while Alastor held me close, letting me hear the soothing beating of his heart next to mine that was thumping loudly and erratically.

“Shit. Miledy, Miledy can you hear me? It’s ok, it’s ok. I’m here.”

After a while of getting to calm me down, he waits for me to say something still rubbing my back in a soothing manner.

“You have to promise me, Al. Please don’t leave me behind,” I whimpered, “I can’t lose you again.”

His heart clenches at the sight of her, she looks so broken and afraid. I never stopped feeling guilty of breaking his promise and leaving her behind to look after Abby all alone. It must have been hard for her. It also made him angry with himself for being the same deadbeat dad that he had resented for all his living life. He was also afraid of thinking that he was unworthy of Miledy’s love, he broke his promise, left her alone and was so weak. That’s why he craved power, power to destroy everyone that would even dare to harm him and his family, so that one day they could live in peace. Something that he failed to do.

“I’ll never leave you, not now. Not anymore,” he says with a heavy heart.

“You’re stuck with me either way,” he say, trying to lighten the mood which I appreciated and smiled to. I leaned on him and enjoyed the sounds of the crackling flames and the beating of our hearts in sync. Finding solace in the mundane.

Alastor and I stand side-by-side as we welcomed Lucifer to the hotel. He jumps in and hugs Charlie almost immediately. To which Alastor’s eye twitches in annoyance at.

“Oh, it's so good to see you. Haha!” he greets squeezing her making her let out a little squeak.

“It's uh, good to see you too, Dad,” Charlie strains out before Lucifer lets go her continuing, “Welcome to the Hazbin Hotel!”

The little Eggbois popped some party poppers with a quick fanfare, only to find Lucifer being distracted by the cat.

“Oh hewwo KeeKee!” he greets the cat and continues with the lambs, “Razzle, Dazzle. Oh, look how much you haven't grown. Still fun sized. You taking care of my wittle girl? You better be.”

“Wow! This place sure looks, uh...uh huh yah uh huh...It's got a lot of character!” he comments trying to be polite at the interior.

“OH, what in the unholy hell is that?!” he screams pointing at the bar looking back at us.

Alastor takes us behind Lucifer in his shadow before reappearing and replies, “Just some of the renovations we had done. Adds a bit of color, don't you think?”

Lucifer’s eyes drift to mine exclaiming in delight, “Miledy! Great to see you again, I haven’t heard from you for a while.”

We shake hands politely, something that Alastor seems to heavily dislike by pulling away my hand from the fallen angels'.

“I got busy you could say. I was waiting for the chance you’d come to the hotel actually. Glad to see you here!” I reply trying to be enthusiastic trying to hold my husband from throwing a tantrum.

“I see you’re well acquainted with my wife,” Alastor interjects with venom in his tone.

“And you are?” Lucifer eyes him suspiciously, also reciprocating the feeling of dislike.

“Alastor, Miledy’s lawful husband. Pleasure to be meeting you, sir. Quite a pleasure,” he introduces with a hint of displeasure, shaking Lucifer’s cane before wiping it on his coat with disgust, “It's nice to finally put a face to the name. You are much shorter in real life.”

I coughed trying to hide my giggle but then realize I’m around the same height as him. Then my eyes following them as they had their silly banter.

“Who is this? Who is this nut? Are you the bellhop?”

“Aha! No! I am the host of the hotel. You might have heard of me from my radio broadcast.”

“Hmm, nope! I guess that's why Charlie called it the Has-been Hotel, ahaha.”

“Ha ha ha. It was actually my idea.”

“Ahaha. Well, it's not very clever.”

“Ha ha! Fuck you.”

“Woah. Okay!” Charlie and I yell while she pulls his father away to the parlor while I grab his waist pulling him in the other direction before a cat fight would start. “Okay, anyway. Dad, look at this lovely parlor where people can get to know each other and share secrets and stories and intimate feelings! Without Alastor, we wouldn't have been able to pretty it up this much.”

“Charlie has a very unique vision. I am happy to fulfil her bizarre requests,” Alastor goes back escaping from me and puts a hand on Charlie’s shoulder.

“Oh, thank you, Alastor,” Charlie says tearing up, finally getting the fatherly attention she deserved.

“Quite an impressive young lady. We're all very proud of her,” Alastor eggs on lifting her chin with his finger with a devious smile.

“Ahem, Charlie! Dear, eheh, why don't you introduce me to your OTHER friends?” Lucifer exclaims pointing to the group behind him.

As a friend I do feel bad for him, but this is the reality check he needed. For him to see that nothing will change if he isn’t willing. Alastor fighting with him might finally knock some sense into him, but so far. He really is a prideful thing he is.

“I am not helping you,” I state crossing my arms not even looking at my husband.

He laughs it off and shrugs, “With what? I’m not going to fight him.”

“Uh-huh,” I say not convinced. Only to put my suspicions proven when the chandelier falls, and they start singing. “Well, here we go.”

While I was enjoying their song, Mimzy barges in singing her heart out. I looked at her surprised, what was she doing here? It could be 2 things, she wants something or she’s in deep shit. Or a combination of both given her character.

I roll my eyes as Alastor and Mimzy exchanged hugs. Talking about our lives on Earth and stuff. We used to be friends but, you know, stuff happens. I sighed and sat down by the bar waiting for some crazy shit to happen now that all the chaos forces were here.

“Miledy! How’s it been going?” Mimzy asks as she takes the glass Husk slides at her while he gives me mine.

“Nothing much. Probably better off than you,” I snicker sipping the alcoholic blend.

“Psh, you can’t be serious. You’re still mad about what happened before?” she asks infuriated.

“You rang me, telling me you wanted to hang out then made me sit with 5 men at the bar and just said the morning after ‘thanks for covering for me?’ Are you insane?” I asked angrily, my hair flaring out as my teeth sharpened and bared them at her.

“It was just one time!”

“You did it twice! You better be grateful I haven’t told Alastor given you’ve been friends for so long,” I reply downing my drink and slamming it down.

Husk, Angel and Pentious were surprised by my outburst. Clearly, this was their first time seeing me lose my cool despite being collected around them. It couldn’t be helped, not if the one you’re sitting next to you made you a scapegoat a few times. I would find bills in our mailbox because of her. It wasn’t cheap either.

I grumbled pouring myself a drink and ignored her excuses. While Husk went probably to tell Alastor. Half an hour later, someone starts hammering on the door yelling for Mimzy, as she explains she stole 50 grand and drove over someone. Why am I not surprised.

“All of you! Get a safe distance, I'll take care of this,” Vaggie yells getting in front of everyone with her spear.

Before she could reach the loan sharks, Alastor steps in and says, “No, my dear, leave it to me. It's time I remind everyone why I am here.”

“Oh, finally! Took you long enough!” Mimzy yells behind the counter, making me bonk her over the head with bottle lightly before standing next to Alastor and changed into our demon forms.

“A reminder to all, not to mess with the radio/siren demon!” We announced both our forms towering over them.

I towered over them with my 15 ft form startling them from the sheer size. They quiver as they see my mouth pull into a sadistic teethy grin similar to Alastor's. Alastor slams down his tendrils while I held a note holding them down while they got crushed.

“I will devour each and every one of you!” Alastor exclaims gobbling them down, while they were paralyzed.

After defeating all of them we shrink back down to our normal selves.

“Oh, I missed getting to let off steam!” Alastor states with a hearty laugh, while I panted beside him.

“God, I haven’t turned into that form for a while. I forgot how tiring it is,” I wheezed.

“Oh, Alastor! What a fantastic show! Bravo! As always. Thanks for helping lil' old me out of a tougher spot, you're always such a pal!” Mimzy thanked him, while I glared at her. This was her mess to begin with. As a debris falls beside her, “Oops. Heheh… sorry about the mess, but I'm sure the little bug can take care of it for you.”

Before I could roll my eyes, Alastor says something that surprised me, “I think you should go Mimzy, now.”

Mimzy visibly shocked, tries to play it off, “Oh pff, Alastor, you're such a kidder you! Haha, you are so funny!”

“I mean it. You deliberately brought danger to this place just to have me clean up your mess. I can't have that here,” he deadpans not even looking at her.

“But you love taking care of me! What? You don't actually give a shit about this tacky place, do ya? Come on, I know you. You heartless son-of-a-bitch~” she iterates poking him on the chest.

“You are welcome if you actually want to give redemption a shot, but I think we both know that's not really your style, so you need to leave.”

“Fine! Who needs you? Have fun with your little princess and your little hotel! See if I care!”

After she flips off Alastor and storms out, he turns back to me with the same look. I flinch and ask, “W-what?”

“I know what she did to you, so why didn’t you tell me?” he demanded an explanation.

“Because! Both of you were long time friends before we got together, and thanks to her I got a start in my career,” I replied hugging myself, unsure now if I made the best decision.

“I’m not mad at you, but the next time something similar happens come to me. You’re my wife, Mel. I put you above than everybody else,” he says sincerely brushing my cheek to which I nodded to.

When we got inside the hotel, Lucifer and Charlie had a confrontation. One that they both desperately needed.

“I wish we could see our little girl again,” I whisper while leaning on Alastor.

“I’m sure she’s doing fine, darling” he says putting his arm around me and squeezing my shoulder.

After closing their song in a hug, Lucifer says this, “Ok, I can get you the meeting but once you're in Heaven, I won't be able to go with you. Will you be ok?”

“I'll be fine,” she assures.

“That's my girl,” he smiles then smiles, “Good luck, kiddo.”

He then disappears in a red mist leaving us to deal with the aftermath of everything.

“This next part is going to be scary. You ready?” Vaggie asks walking towards Charlie.

“I'm ready,” Charlie says as she hugs her, “cuz you'll be with me.”

“In spirit, right?” Vaggie asks unsure if they’re on the same page.

“In Heaven!” Charlie exclaims looking at the sky.

“Yay…” her girlfriend chants unenthusiastically feeling regret for asking.

“Have a nice trip!” I say with a smile, “We still have to clean up this up first though.”

“Ughhh…”

(Oh... Holy... I have no words. Honestly, This is one of the most heartbreaking stories I have ever read on Ao3. (This is one of the Best Field Trips to SI fics. There is so much Fluff and a good amount of Angst. Oh, and you can't forget the embarrassment Peter gets.
