Lovely isn't he.
I finished the third book. It's been a few days already but with work and stuff... Anyway now I'm digging through the additional content Nora posted on Tumblr, took me a while to understand how it works but now I am pleased.
I cannot express the emotionnal damage these books have done to me, but I'm not finished drawing any of the foxes. Just saying.

Actually I don’t think you are actually fr an adult author if you can’t write something without a s*x scene in it
#<-trying to avoid our ancient enemy the evil bots#but literally. i will pick a book off the general fiction side and every time completely unnecessarily there will be such a scene where it#has no business being for the story#I’m about ready to fight over this#there’s been exactly one book out of the dozen or so I’ve done from that side that did not have it and it was Patron Saint of Second Chance#by Christine Simon#and I don’t think Road to Roswell my belovedest did either#but listen I think it’s a sign that something in society is fundamentally broken when I can pick too random books#and one is a cozy bookstore romance thing#and one is a weird travel fantasy that has nothing to do with romance#as a plot#and then both of them as soon as the girl comes across a guy and is like he’s likable#the next step is randomly try to sleep with him#evil evil evil evil#let’s not.#stop using sex scenes as shortcut for romance! it doesn’t work! you won’t have any!#this is wisdom and you should listen to it!!#I’m also gonna include the use of f-bombs in this post because if you can’t write a fantastical Victorian travel novel in fairy tale#style language without randomly using f bombs like do you even have a grasp of the language#those don’t belong in this story’s word set use your vocabulary!!#(there are times it makes sense in the story and the language catalog for the story and/or character for both of these but if you can’t do#story without them when they don’t belong that’s lazy I think#I’m throwing down the glove to adult authors I think they should try#this also goes for Jodi Picoult for whom the first thing did fall into the subject material but should not have been like the whole bull an#meat of that story at the expense of the actually interesting material#(couldn’t finish By Any Other Name between that the anachronistic feminism and the massive chip on her shoulder that seemed to be her subje#material

can you give an example of fascism in an interesting way in literature that you talked about in the tags against mishima’s work? I don’t mean it in a sarcastic way btw I’m genuinely interested in what you meant
ok so my least favorite book we ever had to read in high school was the sound of waves by known tortured gay japanese fascist yukio mishima.
i described it as “fascist in a boring way,” which i stand by. down on his luck (because the americans bombed his fishing boat) fisherman kid Shinji meets beautiful traditional virginal pearl diver Hatsue, but must compete for her affection with gigachad caricature Yasuo with his digital wristwatch terrible work ethic and general enmity for nature standing in for the concept of modernity. meanwhile evil jealous bitch Chiyoko spreads rumors that Shinji is a rapist because she’s jealous that Shinji does not return her affections (meanwhile Yasuo actually is an attempted rapist but gets thwarted because he gets stung like on the dick by a hornet in the attempt. nature does not like him.) It all comes to a head when Shinji and Yasuo are both working together on a fishing boat but Shinji works harder and is more willing to brave the typhoon that hits them. Then he marries Hatsue after proving his worth, they both pray that things will stay the same forever at the local shrine, the fish return to the sea, and her rich and powerful father adopts Shinji as his own son, which is what he’s always wanted since his father died in the war.
We were supposed to like death of the author it as far as I can remember, but to me the book is really only interesting with the added personal and historical context of the author. like this is a desperate childish dream of a Japan that cannot exist and probably never really existed. it will never be the same after the war and there is no going back. Mishima’s personal angst about being unable to participate in the heteropatriarchal institution of the military is very clear.
books about fascism tend to be about 2 things before anything else: power and masculinity. obviously there’s plenty of interesting ways to write about this. I think that books about fascism get waaaaay more interesting the second that they acknowledge that there is any amount of cognitive dissonance happening in the minds of people who are all-in true believers because there are many irreconcilable worldviews within the fascist narrative that just cannot coexist. Sound of Waves as I remember it was way more prescriptive just like this is how the world should be and that’s just less compelling than unpacking why anyone would think like that.

one of my favorite things to come out of the book of bill is all of the bill possessing ford content. like both in canon and in fanworks. bipper did something irrevocable to me back in 2014 but ciphord/bord is such a unique clusterfuck of possession horror and it haunts me.

I've been moving and navigating further departmental nonsense etc (my pseudo-dissertation got approved for defending, though! l o l). But it was interesting to see the Worst P&P Takes poll I reblogged accumulating more results and the general tenor of responses in the notes.
I mean, the results are definitely to be expected if you're familiar with the side of Austen fandom doing a lot of the reblogging etc. But still, interesting!
Many Tumblr polls specify that they're asking about personal preferences that may be irrational—favorite/least favorite, coolest/most annoying, or something like that. This one, though, asked for the worst interpretation of P&P, not the most annoying one—and the current leader is "Darcy is never really proud, he's just shy and probably has anxiety" against some very steep competition on the Bad Takes front.
I was thinking about why that seemed a kind of tediously predictable choice even though I agree that the take is wrong, and realized that while I do disagree with the shy Darcy interpretation and I particularly disagree with the specific formulation where he is never proud at all, it ultimately feels to me like a failure of nuance rather than just completely wrongheaded like some of the others. And this is probably my fundamental difference with a lot of Darcy takes I see!
In my opinion, a character who is introverted and who feels awkward in various social situations and who doesn't like common social activities and who has to work himself up to talking to his crush and who is repeatedly suggested to behave very differently in contexts where he's more comfortable being interpreted as shy and anxious is not that big of a leap.
Yes, it's important that he is actually fundamentally confident and haughty, that he makes his personal feelings of discomfort other people's problem, and that he thinks he's such a unique and special butterfly that he doesn't need to even put in an effort outside his personal social circle. But it's a misreading that is easy to follow (and long predates the 2005 P&P, as I've mentioned before!).
The additional misreading that a shy and anxious Darcy is also never proud at all is a much more drastic leap, and in my experience, condemnations of shy Darcy interpretations rarely differentiate between "Darcy is shy as well as arrogant" and "Darcy is shy rather than arrogant" as interpretations (although their basic arguments are quite different). But even that as the worst possible misreading of P&P when Darcy is not even the main character is ?????????
I mean, for one alternative (not even the one I voted for!), the idea that Elizabeth is an author avatar Mary Sue seems a far worse misreading of P&P than basically anything to do with Darcy at all. The center piece of the entire novel is Elizabeth's epiphany of self-knowledge about her own shortcomings that do not particularly resemble Austen's at all, but were ethically a concern for her, and she's a complex, interesting character in general whom Austen correctly regarded as a major achievement. Inverting that into Elizabeth as an improbably perfect, reality-warping self-insert is deeply wrong and frankly pretty misogynistic as well.
(ngl though, it's a little funny to see such a blatantly terrible reading of Elizabeth rank so far behind the shy Darcy votes. I've gotten "does anyone actually think/say that?" so many times on my posts about Austen fandom's prioritization of Darcy's character development over Elizabeth's and yet...)
And even just going with the Darcy-centric misreadings, the idea of Darcy as a "bad boy" seems easily the most absolutely wrong take on him. His pride is at least complicated and the finer points can be fairly debated and it's a quality that actually changes somewhat throughout the novel, and you can have discussion over what happened when, whose testimonies should be weighted more, etc. But there is no point at which "bad boy" isn't utterly wrong for him. However, there's definitely a tendency in some wings of the fandom to find the idea of Darcy being misread too favorably more objectionable than him being read too unfavorably, regardless of the particulars, so it's not a surprise.
I suppose you could argue about what "worst" means in the context of variously bad interpretations. Like, is an interpretation that is about a fairly trivial aspect of the book but extremely wrong about it "worse" than an interpretation that is pretty bad but at least comprehensibly so about something very important?

Einsamkeit und Zweisamkeit
I'm trying to finish Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by the end of today (= the end of February) and just arrived at this passage
Tumblr media
This is wrong.
The feeling of being alone (= allein) even when you're with other people is Einsamkeit (= loneliness, einsam = lonely)
Zweisamkeit is when two people are spending time together, often in harmony and sometimes even romance, without being disturbed by other people.
As you might notice:
einsamkeit (1-sam-keit) -> being lonely
vs.
zweisamkeit (2-sam-keit) -> being with one other person

Do you have any cool alias for "zero" ? It's not for character name so I don't mind if it's complicated
Words to Use Instead of...Zero
I'm not sure if my ideas are "cool" in your standards, but here we go:
nought
nothing (not a single thing, not anything, nothing at all)
nil
naught
aught
none
nowt
nix
oh/o
zilch
nix
not a sausage
sweet Fanny Asams
zip
the nadir
nada
bupkis (= nothing at all)
goose egg
cipher
void
nullity
void
nullus
the additive identity
the subtractive indentity
the positional value/notation
the commutative ring
the trivial
algoritmi
Maybe you can try an analogy of some sort:
the circle
the big wheel
the ring
the undefined
existance of non-existence
the large dot
vacant star
You can try building on zero in language other than English:
Russian: ноль (nol')
Chinese (Mandarin): 零 (líng)
Japanese: ゼロ (rei, maru)
Korean: 영 (yeong)
Arabic: صفر (sifr)
Hindi: शून्य (shunya)
Swedish: noll
Turkish: sıfır
Greek: μηδέν (midén)
Hungarian: nulla
Czech: nula
Thai: ศูนย์ (sǔun)
Finnish: nolla
+ You don't need to answer, but why do you need a cool alias for zero? I'm genuinely curious LOL

Some fun quotes from my Shakespeare Troup's first (and very rough) run through of As You Like It
Wait, come back, he needs to throw you! You're supposed to die over here!
Jaques can't you be normal?!
"Or fool, I kill thee! Or to do thee better I will"-- ow that is my foot.
Thus quoth the bard: ew it's hair.
Slap me when I call you a slut.
Slap me, remember?
Now slap me!
*starts sentence* Nope, that's your line.
*offstage cast members miming eating various fruits, eventually resulting in a fake heimlich maneuver, squeezing lemon juice in each other's eyes, and slipping on a banana peel*
"All the world's a stage!" *kicks pumpkin Trick-or-Treat bucket*
*pokes deer carcass* Oh it's dead.

Writing newsies fanfiction is great for people who's vocabulary comes from books and they don't know the actual meanings of words but they know the vibe of the word. Yeah you may be misusing the word indigent because you don't really know what it means but you know who else is misusing the word indigent because they don't really know what it means? The guy in your story who's saying it.
