Zuko (and Sokka) in Avatar Chibi Short - Bending Battle

Watching the Avatar Chibi Short - Bending Battle was such a weird experience. The animation itself is nice and cute, but there is something truly messed up when Book 1!Zuko - the antagonist - is the only one non-abusive bender toward Sokka. And Katara, Aang and Toph are literally Sokka’s family and friends!

The short animation is about an argument between Katara, Aang and Toph whose element is the best (Sokka tried to join their bender game but his boomerang skill wasn’t taken into account). 

To prove her point, Katara - Sokka’s younger sister - froze him and literally shattered into pieces.

Toph used Sokka as a ball in a flipper-like game created by her earthbending. 

When Sokka outright said he is tired of being used as everyone’s dummy,

Aang used his airbending to turn him into a balloon.

and once Sokka fell down into lake, Aang was just laughing, so proud of himself and his element.

And there is Zuko (and I can't stress enough, in his Book 1’s outfit of the antagonist) who joined the argument by throwing a flame at Sokka…

except there is no visible sign that Sokka was scorched. Only the fish he held in hand catched the fire and was burned (cooked). 

And there is something to say about that scene, because the animation could easily mark that Sokka was burned in a comedic way - a bit of smoke or smoldering flame here and there - but it didn't. And yeah, in previous scenes there is no permanent damage done either, but we can see Sokka's distress (and pain in cause of Toph's bending?) but it is absent from the fire scene; Sokka's expression does not change at all, while the fish is literally on flame. Which is why I think Zuko's bending did not harm Sokka, and fire was actually aimed at the fish.

A fish that Sokka actually ate at the end of episode.

And even once the benders had another contest whose power/skills is the best, when Zuko was using his fire, he is the only one to actually warn others to stay away

while Aang, Katara and Toph just used their respective elements without any warning.

Look, I know this is chibi and not serious animation but damn, it truly hits hard how Zuko (and by extension, Iroh) is the only one person that did not use his element to abuse Sokka, the one non-bender in the group and actually seems to be caution of how dangerous the fire is (and how he couldn’t be aware if his face was burned with fire?) which fits nicely to the original source material and how Zuko did not use fire to burn people on purpose (as could be seen with Zhao during Agni Kai and how he apologized to Toph for burning her feets by accident).

All while Zuko is presented in his Book 1's outfit, when he played the role of antagonist.

On side note, this little animation would be great propaganda material for LoK's Amon and his Equalist movement, wouldn't it? Benders proving their might by abusing non-bender person? Oh yeah, that would be perfect propaganda.

I have never seen something and genuinely almost thrown up because of it but the zuko and katara ship in the OFFICIAL ATLA chibi shorts just did that to me

I don't see their personalities lining up! I'm only halfway through with Book two so obviously the characters haven't really interacted much but.. not katara.

Also I hc zuko as on the aromantic spectrum so maybe I'm projecting but.. yk

Ty Laru headcannons

i know what you're thinking: this thing came out from the Chibi shorts, and Haru and Ty Lee don't even meet in ATLA!

But but.....

Why not?

These are all my headcannons that support a certain theory i'll talk later about......

They could have met the first time at Zuko's coronation, but probably they wouldn't have even talked. But then Ty Lee became a member of the Kyoshi Warriors, and this gives her the possibility to travel to the Earth Kingdom

Maybe it's a festival in Kyoshi island: a good reason to leave the Fire Nation with her comrades and go to the Earth Kingdom.

During this festival she can meet Haru: he is a friend of the Avatar, Zuko knows him. I don't believe it's love at first sight, but they meet again later, in a mission of the Kyoshi Warriors around Haru's village.

They have the chance of work togheter, and Ty Lee finds this guy pretty great. Haru is brave and kind, the same things that Ty Lee possibly liked about Sokka (??)

In the moment they become a couple they have a few problems with Haru's father, who doesn't exatly like Firenation people. They have a bad time there, but thanks to Mai, who supported Ty Lee and helped her with the old man, they can get together with Haru's father approval.

Haru would move in Caldera because of Ty Lee's job as part of Zuko's guards, but the Firelord and the Earth King give him the role of contact between their two countries, so often he travels in the Earth Kingdom too.

They has two child. The first one has Izumi's age, and they'll be best frineds as Mai and Ty Lee are. The second one was born years later, when both of her parents are kinda old. It's Pema.

I bet you heard the theories already, they are not mine, credit to whoever invented them (you're great).

There is the most famous theory about Ty Lee, that she is the descendant of some airbenders. And then someone said that Pema may be Ty Lee's daughter bc they kinda look alike. And it isn't weird that all of Pema and Tenzin's sons/daughter (don't know about Rohan but let's say he is) are airbenders? It's a great thing, ofc, but even a couple as Aang and Katara, both benders, has a son who is a non-bender. And Pema, a non bender, and Tenzin has three/four children who can bend? Maybe.... because of Ty Lee legacy. It's normal that children of non bender people can be benders (as Katara). Maybe Ty Lee's airbenders ancestors bending went throught the family till Pema's children? This could mean nothing, Pema could be daughter of some other airbender descendant, but that's how i like to see that:)

Watching the ATLA chibi shorts for the first time in my life. It's hard to concentrate on the events of the swamp skiing. I'm distracted by the fact this entire soundtrack is Scruggs-style banjo.

8-Man vs. Cyborg 009 - Volume 2

Love a good 2 volume, short read every now and then. Unlike BGOO Parts, this one didn't outstay its welcome. Nothing ground breaking here, just some crossover fanservice like in the Devilman crossover. Fun times. Interested to see what's next for these franchises.

Ch. 7

8-Man tells Joe and Francoise about his past romantic drama with his secretary Sachiko. Francoise apparently "saw" Sachiko's presence when they were in 8-Man's office and wanted the tea lol.

If they're not gonna let Francoise fight, like ever, can they please introduce another female fighter or something? I'm getting really fed up watching her smile blandly on the sidelines or be a damsel in distress. Like if she's a pacifist, fine! But she's also the only girl cyborg so it feels insulting.

The two page spread of the demon God statue was a good jump scare. Let the final showdown, begin!

Ch. 8

Lol I guess the manga heard my complaints because they finally let Francoise shoot a gun at least. Also, her heightened senses finally did something useful. Alright, fine. You win this time mangaka...

Wait, what the hell!? Pyunma's back to his old racist design! THIS MANGA CAME OUT IN 2020 WTF??? (Good thing I didn't pay for this one lol).

Honestly, it seems ridiculous that Skull would just ignore the other numbers cyborgs. There's no way they wouldn't come after their kidnapped friends...just makes him look really stupid.

The Black Ghost minions were drawn all cutesy in like a chibi form. They look like they could be villains from a Mario game or something lol. Not very intimidating.

Ch. 9

Yaaay 008 pointed out the 8 thing =D lol. Glad he gets to contribute to the battle even though there's no water around lol.

Francoise has a weird bonding moment with Dr. Daemon because he saw her in a ballet once. He's definitely the chiller of the two evils but he's still actively working towards world domination and perpetual wars? I don't think this is really a "there's good in him" moment...

8-man sure loses his arms a lot. Guess they're just trying to emphasize his mechanical body.

I swear they used the EXACT same tactic to topple the demon God statue that they used to topple the Atlas-type robots in BGOO Parts! (006 digs a hole and then 005 pushes the big enemy over). Felt weird to see that used back-to-back in manga published so close to one another. Both times they emphasized it as some kinda ingenious strategy.

Ch. 10

Awe, I really liked this finale. They wrapped everything up in a nice, neat bow and sometimes that's all you want.

So Dr. Daemon was actually playing the long game and never allied with Black Ghost at all! Rather convenient lol. Does they mean the gang wouldn't have been able to defeat both enemies at once?

I completely forgot about Joe's juvenile delinquent backstory. Why do I feel like that doesn't fit his character at all? He's such a bland do-gooder now...Anyway, having 8-Man explain that he was a cop on the scene at the time of Joe's escape attempt was a clever way to tie the two series worlds together in a believable way.

So I guess Dr. Daemon is still not a great guy but not that evil either? I don't know enough 8-Man lore to make a conclusion lol. He seemed pretty okay with the heroes dying earlier, so I guess he's just all for himself.

This chapter got all Ghost in the Shell-y with the reveal that Skull isn't a real person, just a robot with implanted memories. Pretty brutal that he decapitated his own lackeys to prove a point what the heck...what if they weren't robots!?

So Black Ghost is dead "for real" now...riiiight. Until they inevitably get resurrected again for some future manga.

I was kinda shook to find out that Joe's hair is a wig (or maybe it's actually implanted into his scalp? IDK). It doesn't actually make any difference, I just never realized that was the case.

Dr. Gilmore and Dr. Tani being science bros was cute. Also enjoyed seeing Ivan (and his one eye) very briefly.

Nice picturesque ending with Joe and Francoise dropping 8-Man off at Sachiko's house and validating his humanity. Wholesome cyborgs supporting cyborgs.

Omake - Duel

A closer look at some 8-Man/Dr. Tani lore. I kinda wish they didn't include this tbh because it ended this volume on a depressing note.

Damn, if I was Ken I'd probably resent my dad too! Ken was like "you only love 8-Man!" and Dr. Tani was like "that's not true!" but then the second Ken dies Dr. Tani's just like "meh, at least I have 8-Man" lol. Poor Ken!

Speaking of poor Ken...that's one severe widow's peak. On top of having a craptastic life, he's also balding? Oh the humanity!

Dr. Tani acted like Ken being a cyborg with a human brain was a revelation of some sort? Sooo...if Dr. Tani wasn't the one to turn Ken into a cyborg, who did?

Ken's hero suit (or villain suit, I guess) literally just looks like he sharpied some fake pecs on lol. What a weird design choice.

As far as 1960s manga go, I think I prefer Cyborg 009's art style because it's more over-exaggerated and stylized. I think this allows it to hold up more. 8-Man feels more traditionally drawn (more proportional characters).

I'm kinda glad I got a glimpse into the authentic, OG 8-Man for greater context, but I'll also probably just read this again someday if I ever get to that part of MAL haha.

I didn’t get Yueki, but they’re cute and I support wlw ships rights. But then I saw that one atla chibi short screenshots of yue and suki going from fighting over sokka to getting fruity with each other and I understand now. Also apparently BOTH their names mean moon ;_; That’s so. AAAAAHHH

In terms of Chibi-fied parodies of their own franchise, ATLA did a much better job with this that Teen Titans Go!

They were just harmless shorts making fun of itself and it’s fandom.

It wasn’t overhyped by the network and aired 24/7 over other shows.

The character designs were actually cute.

my other edgy opinion is that i don't like atla. i don't feel like its art style worked. i had the same issue with teen titans. i grew up on real anime so listen to me when i say this

but the thing that makes the exaggerated facial expressions and chibis work in 90s anime is that they're not used like. all the time. just like in real life, most anime characters have fairly neutral facial expressions when they talk. exaggeration is used sparingly when specific attention needs to be drawn to a character's emotional state.

the atla/teen titans moment combined the exaggerated japanese facial expressions with the american conviction that every single action needs to be just drenched in emotion all the time and to me what this does is makes the characters feel kind of. loose. like they dont have a default emotional state that unifies them and makes them who they are. so edward elric's little >:O when someone calls him short comes across as sincere, because that's something that really pisses him off. but katara will pull out that same facial expression over nothing and so it doesn't tell you as much about her personality

The Chibi shorts are fucked up for this, I don't think these three should be allowed to be on the same scene together, at the same place, at the same time. That's too much teenage boy angst/edgyness/general bs all at once. That's why the show settled to only have 2 of them together on the same place at the most

By commissioning me you have confirmed to have read and accepted all Terms of Service. These Terms of Service apply to you, the "Client, you, Commissioner" and me, the "Artist, I, me, my".

1) General Terms

The Client must be at least 18 for commissioning.

The Artist is allowed to deny a commission for any reason and does not have to disclose why.

Please credit me (@itz__summer) in any platform where you use the commissioned work!

If something is not written here, please ask instead of assuming.

2) Timeline

Work completion requires a minimum of 1 week and may take up to 4 months, depending on the work's complexity and demand.

A rush fee will put the Client's commission in priority.

Work timeline depends on the commission type, complexity, demand and IRL situations, since sometimes I have to run errands with my grandma.

The Artist will send many wips, including screenshots and short videos.

3) General Process

After the Client contacts the Artist through email, Discord or Twitter, the Artist will send an estimated price according to the type of work commissioned and its complexity, based on references provided by the Client.

If the client adds more complexity (add-ons, toggles, etc.) to the work after the first estimated price, the Artist may raise the price accordingly.

Commission will be started after receiving at least 30% of the Primary Total Price, unless the Client opts for a payment plan.

The Client will recieve an update during every step of the work's progress.

The final files will be sent through Google Drive after full payment.

3.1) General Art Process (Live2D)

The Art process is usually separated in: sketches, base color, line art, color & shading. Each step may take from a day to weeks. After a WIP is sent, the client is encouraged to voice any concerns and changes for the art.

3.2) General Rigging Process (Live2D)

The Rigging process is usually separated in: eyes, mouth, face, hair, upper body and lower body. After a WIP is sent, the client is encouraged to voice any concerns and questions about the rig.

After the files (.moc3, .json and texture atlas) are sent, the Client may test the model (VTube Studio recommended) and voice any concerns and questions about the rig. The Client may request for small changes (e.g. physics strenght, toggle transitions) in the rig, free of charge.

The Artist will be available to help set up the model in VTube Studio, free of charge.

4) Rights and Usage

The Artist reserves the right to use the commissioned work for portifolio, advertising, social media posts, including the work in process and final product, and livestreaming the work in process on Twitch.

If the Client pays an NDA fee, work in progress streaming and posts will not happen, and the work will only be posted on social media and portifolio after the Client's permission.

The Client cannot sell any of the commissioned work to another party.

Commercial Rights do not include work's distribution (e.g. merchandise).

The usage of my work, including but not limited to, AI training, machine intelligence, NFTs, and blockchains, are strictly prohibited.

5) Payment

Payment is categorized into Primary Total Price (PTP) and Final Total Price.

All prices are in USD and must be paid via PayPal Invoice, which will be sent to the email provided by the Client.

Do not issue chargebacks. You may request a refund according to 7) Cancellation & Refund, letter b of this Terms of Service.

Primary Total Price is the price agreed upon by the Artist and the Client of the commissioned work by the Client, including the work's add-on's, if any.

Final Total Price is the price including any additional Fees and the rest of the Primary Total Price's needed amount.

Custom payment plans can be discussed if the work's Primary Total Price is the same or above $100 USD.

Invoices must be paid within 72 hours after it is sent, or the commission may be put on hold or cancelled.

6) Fees

Commercial Fee: 30% of PTP

Rush Fee: 70% of PTP

NDA Fee: 30% of PTP

Commercial: Rights to use the work for profit (e.g. livestreaming, videos).

Rush: Will prioritize your work over others, will take less time to complete.

NDA: Will not display the work in any way (e.g. livestreaming, social media), until a date agreed by me and you, and/or after debut.

7) Cancellation & Refund

The Client can request a cancellation of the commission before first payment.

No refunds are possible after the Artist sends the first WIP (sketch for Art, eye rig video for Rigging) unless something happens on the Artist's end and I can't complete the commissioned work. In that case, the Client may be eligible for a full refund of the amount paid or a partial refund according to the amount of work completed.
