#queer lit#queer books#pride month#lgbtq books#two spirit#picture books#kid books#canadian#canlit#kidlit#children's books#book lists#award winning#parents#babies#weddings#i WILL be doing more indepth posts about these just like i normally do#but ha.... the queue is a bit backed up to say the least#so i'll probably be sitting on them for a while#but i wanted to give people a sampling in case anyone was itching to go out and find some queer kidlit!#'pride puppy' / 'mama and mommy and me in the middle' were probably my 2 personal favourites 🤔 but all were pretty solid#well i have Opinions about some but i have Opinions about all kidlit so nothing knew there but there were none that i disliked here#does anyone else have some personal favourites for queer lit? just the existence of queer stories oriented for kids is kinda mindblowing#this did not exist when i was a kid

I have finally emptied the blue bench of all the library books I need to hand back, even though they were terribly photogenic in there, and instead have filled it with all the old children's books I've been keeping around for like fifteen years or more, even though the chances of me ever having children or even passing them on to nieces/nephews/cousins etc is vanishingly small. These are less photogenic but at least it's one way to start clearing the living room of boxes.
Currently strategising how to fit them all in but also wow this is a list of Problematic Children's Authors TM
#I mean#They're all dead and they were probably considered Problematic long before I read them as a kid and I turned out sort of ok-ish#But honestly not a great look and very much proponents of a particular early to mid twentieth century upper class moral system#On the other hand#I do fully believe that the PTSD-addled disaster teenager in a Sopwith Camel that is James Bigglesworth is appropriate reading for kids#The shelf goes 'Snotty boarding school stories; saccharine animal stories; now let's introduce the children to the concept of WW1#Shellshock and alcoholism time for the little ones; on the other hand the racist elements in quite a few of them are going to need reviewin#Not sure the 1970s approach- which was essentially to revere the same authors but delete the racist and sexist language- actually worked#Because it took out the worst words but it didn't actually do anything about the fundamental attitudes of the books#Maybe we should have asked WHY we revere a certain type of children's literature from a certain (colonial; stiff upper-lip; heroic) era#Rather than simply deleting a word here and there and repackaging them as essentially ok for the next generation#Eh#As I say I turned out fine and I think if handled properly it can teach children how to read critically#But if in some miraculous turn of events there ever Real Children in this house that shelf is going to need diversifying#I just can't seem to bring myself to throw them out yet; I know I'm not likely to ever have children so not sure why I keep them really#But I used to think I'd have them for my own kids and that's a hard idea to let go of#And not something I'm willing to unpack right now#On the other hand 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' has to stay even though the spine is falling off#It has been a favourite of two generations because we all love Robin Hood and also Marion is allowed to be kick-ass for thirty seconds#And that tiny scene got me through half my childhood#Earth and stone

Yeah this is about right (as always my thoughts are in the tags so there's actually kei content there lmao)
#Hester I adore you they could never make me hate you. Seriously the first chapter in 6 (bad candy) is like my favourite opener#Kei they could NEVER EVER make me hate you. did nothing wrong ever. rhian when I CATCH you#its so funny how my two favourite characters just like. hate each other. like japeth literally kills him#sad cause they're so SIMILAR. theyre both victims of Dog Metaphor its so sad that kei does Not like japeth in the slightest#personally if they had a good long discussion about their emotions at like 3am they could've probably stopped TCY from happening#but alas. Aric. somehow its all his fault again. why do I have an aricposting tag but not a keiposting one.#Hester easily has the best overall characterisation arc I love love love the way soman writes her#I remember when I read 6 for the first time#before japeth insanity happened#I used to anticipate her chapters over like everyone else's. Hester the 1 lesbian in the series you are deeply loved#I could write whole essays about japeth and kei's characterisation it is so sad that soman forgets kei exists#like he's meant to be rhian's eagle. that's his job. that's what he's spent a Long Time anticipating becoming#but rhian refuses to acknowledge it. instead he calls Japeth his eagle in book 4's ending#He eventually falls in love with Sophie#he only ever cares about the crown#how he GETS to the crown#and bringing his mother back. he lies more than japeth#and never once does he get to be the eagle. There's only three spaces - lion/eagle/snake - and he doesn't get to be any of them#dont even get me started on how he dies. surrounded by white swans. being purely good#god rhian II try not to fuck EVERYTHING over challenge. and also Aric. its all arics fault as well#keiposting#japethposting#actually not really jposting. didn't do it that much#sge#tsfgae#school for good and evil#the school for good and evil#sfgae#the school of good and evil#as much as I adore Hester I dont think I will talk about her much in detail ever so no hesterposting yet

obsessed with their different reactions to being called starcrossed lovers
#im gonna pretend mattie didnt die and visits them sometimes back in toronto#it's such a cute dynamic they have#the two evil (affectionate) sisters who just loving teasing laura#also one of my favourite things abt this show is the choreographing they do for the static camera#i bet it's so annoying to have to think about but i love watching them all move so coordinatedly through the frame#somehow still making it look natural#also i know laura is the storyteller one and i dont really know enough abt romanticism to make any definitive claims abt carmilla#but having scrolled her blog a bit to figure out her tastes in music and art#i wonder if theres a part of carmilla that kind of enjoys being starcrossed. or doomed in a sense#or maybe she that she wouldnt have CHOSEN this story necessarily but that she has resigned herself to it#on account of her vampire nature#and sees a certain beauty in it#that all her romances are doomed#idk. im still figuring her out#also im reinterpreting that exchange mattie and carmilla have in this scene#carmilla calls mattie a utilitarian which is probably right#mattie then callls her a nihilist and carmilla corrects that to existentialist#and mattie says absurdist at best#but those arent designations like back and forth as i had read it before#it's just carmillas philosophy theyre arguing about. i THINK. or maybe it's both of them#putting a pin in that until ive read more books#also kind of obsessed with how laura and danny and maybe the other humans are so quick to ascribe a morality to the vampires#based just on the 'shes a vampire!!' while obviously by necessity the vampires have spent wayyyyyyyyyy more time thinking abt their ethics#or maybe not by necessity for all of them but to mattie and carmilla it definitely seems like a necessity. or inevitability#they mustve spent countless hours over the centuries talking abt this if they can joke abt it in this way now#and in different states too like i can imagine distraught Im A Monster type conversations but also just sort of academic debates and also#carmilla reading some new book that has come out and mattie being like what newfangled thing are you into now#i guess utilitarianism was also newfangled at some point. theyre both older. but you know#carmilla is a poet. dont know if she writes poetry but she looks at things in a poet's way i think#also dont think shes entirely a romantic but i do think some of her tastes lean more toward the romantic

I sat at night by the waters of Anduin, in the grey dark, under the young pale moon, watching the ever-moving stream; and the sad reeds were rustling. Then I saw, a boat floating on the water, glimmering grey, a small boat of a strange fashion with a high prow, and there was none to row or steer it. An awe fell on me, for a pale light was round it. But i rose and went to the bank, and began to walk out into the stream, for i was drawn towards it. Then the boat turned towards me, and stayed it's pace, and floated slowly by within my hand's reach, yet i durst not handle it. It waded deep, as if it were heavily burdened, and it seemed to me as it passed under my Gaze that it was almost filled with clear water, from wich came the light; and lapped in the water a warrior lay asleep.
A broken sword was on his knee. I saw many wounds on him. It was Boromir, my brother, dead. I knew his gear, his sword, his beloved face. Boromir. I cried. Where is the horn? Whither goest thou? O Boromir. But he was gone. The boat turned into the stream and passed glimmering into the night. Dreamlike it was, and yet no dream, for there was no waking.
#faramir#lotredit#lotr#lord of the rings#david wenham#boromir#that is a faitful book adaptation#i love this scene#probably my favourite in the two towers#i remember i qas so stunned when i first saw it in the extended edition

Books I read in 2024
Abaddon's Gate - James S. A. Corey (2013)
#abaddon's gate#james s.a. corey#the expanse#i liked it a little less than the first two#probably because I found it harder to connect to the pov characters (clarissa and anna were never among my favourites in the show)#the story is solid though and i'm stelly very curious about the rest#books 2024#i just want a tag for the things i personally put out into the world

I decided to give a go to @niennanir’s lovely print-your-own-fic recipe on my Inside and Out as a test run and I’m quite pleased with the results as a first pass :D
I wish I’d taken a few more process pictures but there was a slight lull as I had to go shopping for 12x12 cardstock lol, but! I do have a couple closeups/extras that I added for funsies :D
I went with freehanding the title and I think in the future I would opt to not do that lol, at least not without a printed template. That said, both LibreOffice and SAI refuse to recognize my SCII fonts >:0 If you notice on the first page, I used the Ace Attorney font in italic haha, it’s an okay alternative even if it’s not what I actually want |0 I am happy with the gold detailing tho :3c
I did have an unconscionable amount of fun freehanding the ship caption tho ahh <3 <3 Immediate happy stims upon completion, their names together look so pretty ♥ Credit to Zarla’s original minicomic on that one :3
I also managed to get the last sentence of the fic isolated on the last page thanks to the formatting haha ♪
I was also able to add a bookmark! Ma happened to have a couple very thin ribbons to choose from and red ended up complementing the green very prettily!
It reminds me of VUX tongues hehehehe ❤️💕💖💞
#What do I tag this lol#SCII#I am continually and incurably in love with papercrafts <3#Hard to believe it's been since Pokemon Homestyle since I've given anything a go! These darn talented artists inspiring me! Lol#Honestly tho I would absolutely recommend this project :D The prep work is manageable and friendly and the action itself is enjoyable#Depending on how much you enjoy repetitive motions haha ♪ Folding and creasing the pages was very relaxing to me :)#I went for my own fic as a first run since y'know - I have very direct access to it lol#Plus it'd be less sad if I messed something up - I want to do right by my favourites from other artists! I'm allowed to make my own mess lol#Also finally convinced me to return to the loving embrace of LibreOffice after like a decade away lol#I just never had a reason to redownload it! Wordpad does exactly what I want 95% of the time!#But it couldn't do columns so okayyyyy fiiiiine I'll get it again (lol) I do rather like it :)#There's still some things I'd change! I'm sure you can see from the pages where you can see both edges that the layout's a bit uhmmmm#Skewed? Corner-heavy? Lol just a matter of changing the borders :) LibreOffice's measurements are wack tho :P#But I fully intend to do this again! :D Print a few test sheets first >:3c Legitimately looking forward to it!#Probably gonna do another one of mine next before I give a go to someone else's I'd like to keep#I have ideas for how to improve! And better and more plentiful supplies! It makes me want to make! :D#Oh yeah and being in the book-making mood reminded me of one of the Vargas-as-a-psuedo-bible ideas I had but didn't put anywhere lol#If I may posit for your consideration: Before as the Old Testament and After as the New Testament :3c#I'd Absolutely buy two versions - And a full version for the record lol I would easily own multiple copies of physical!Vargas lol#Fun thought to me hehehehe ♪♫

i wouldnt go so far as to call the calling a good book necessarily, but it's so much better than the stolen throne and it's actually got an interesting plot & lore, it's very refreshing when im reading them in order
#personal#da#i love grey warden stuff it's so juicy. horrifying! especially in this book! im glad they went that route!#still not a good book! but not on the same level as the stolen throne. god.#one thing about the da books is that they do generally trend upwards in quality which makes reading them a decent experience#or at least a better experience than it would be otherwise#in terms of being a good book the one i enjoy the most is last flight (although the current day chapters are a bit empty)#but for lore the calling probably is my favourite#asunder and the masked empire are better books than these first two but the plots...... god the plots.#if he wasnt the protag of asunder i think i would feel pretty indifferent towards rhys but that book makes me *hate* him#and as for the masked empire........ well ive talked before about how i just cant bring myself to care AT ALL about orlesian politics#some of the elf bits are interesting. give me a book about felassan. but also. yeesh. they did the wlw baaaad#not that i can complain if im saying i like the calling. one of the more jarring instances of bury your gays#like hey could you maybe give us wlw relationships that arent terrible and mlm relationships where they dont DIE

I’m gonna be completely real with you. For the past couple of weeks I have been neck deep in the Ice Planet Barbarians series with no end in sight
#i don’t know what ms ruby dixon put in these books but it’s like crack to me#i think it’s the balance of predictability vs there being a journey#like i know these two are going to get together and be fated mates but i don’t know when or how it’s going to happen#and she keeps switching up the formula just enough that i’m not sure what exactly the vibe is going to be each time#i’m on maddie’s book and it might be my favourite so far just because of how dramatic the earthquake was#and i liked that SOMEONE finally asked if any of the men were getting it on with each other because i mean……#there’s two dozen hunters who thought they were NEVER going to get a mate and you’re telling me NONE of them fucked. suspicious#i also really liked when hassen was saying about how maddie throws stuff at people when she’s mad and then he says ‘now that is a woman’#like honestly. yeah. too many of these men have been like ‘oh i love my small delicate human mate :)’ and hassen is like#‘this fat bitch who screams at people? i want her. she’s mine because bro honestly that would be me#i’d either be ms ariana screaming and crying at any stimuli; maddie throwing stuff at people; or maybe a combo of the two#which i think is probably liz#what else do i have to say about this… i mean honestly i am a vektal apologist. the man needs a raise. he is dealing with TOO MUCH bullshit#and from too many people. whenever some guy pipes up like ‘my mate is pregnant i can’t do that’ i’d be like ‘man EVERYBODY is pregnant#read the fucking room’#i’m not saying i like vektal i’m just saying i understand him and i feel bad for him and i’m impressed that he hasn’t started killing#that’s about it. uh. i’m going to finish this one and then read the spinoffs before i proceed#personal#**not the spinoffs. the novellas. the babies etc

random thought: stede bonnet suffers from emma woodhouse syndrome
this is a term i use to explain why jane austen’s emma is so difficult to get into and it basically boils down to ‘you hate her (and sometimes the book itself) until you meet people (mrs elton) who are Way Worse and then you’re on her side’
seeing the crew’s reaction to stede and izzy’s duel reminded me of that
they were so ready to stab him a few episodes back but then this fucker shows up and treats them like shit and is generally awful and now they’re all ‘ohh captain’s cool now actually’
#ofmd#this is self indulgent i just wanted to combine two of my favourite things#ofmd and austen#also i think stede would be chuffed with this comparison he probably loves emma#the book and the character#also emma came out in 1716 (congrats to her) so it works with the show’s timeline#not that anyone actually cares about that 😂😂😂#does this make izzy the equivalent of mrs elton

is it just me or do y'all hate people who read for the aesthetic
#day before yesterday i was at starmarks#this guy (probably in college) came in dribbling a basketball and he was loud asf he wasn't even checking out the books#just staring at the girls and dribbling his basketball#and the college gangs are WORSE#they come in fucking packs like they're starting in teen wolf or smth and just keep giggling and gossiping while the books just lie#unread#yesterday I went to another bookstore and this one was my favourite#it was lovely and there were only two people and the guys helped me out when i accidentally misplaced the books#BUT THENNN#this college girl and guy came in and they literally did nothing i kid you not#they just sat in a revolving chair and talked SO FKING LOUDLY about their grandparents???#and the guy was like “oh don't touch the books uwu~”#not to me ofc bc he would've been in the hospital by now if he did that#but to his supposed gf#it pissed me to no end#like my guy it's okay if you don't like reading#we respect the fact that you don't like books#but please don't infiltrate safe spaces for people who actually do love reading#anyway fuck them

I've just started Jekyll & Hyde Weekly to replace the Dracula shaped hole in my life, but I want to know if anyone is doing a serialised Dickens substack or if I'm going to have to make one myself
#jekyll and hyde#Jekyll and Hyde Weekly#dickens#charles dickens#I'm currently reading David Copperfield and it's so so good and I just really love Dickens#and the fact that his work was genuinely originally serialised particularly lends it to this new trend#I did find a very cool website with details of the dates that different sections of novels were serialised (including Dickens)#a lot of them were over years so if we did it on the original timescale it would be quite an undertaking#but maybe it could be started with one of his shorter works#idk#someone tell me please if they know of one already existing#mine#books#also if I were to do it probably I should do it with one I've already read#so maybe a tale of two cities even though that one's not one of my favourites#or hard times isn't too long#I have no clue how you make a substack but I'm very intrigued by it and reckon it's possible to figure out#dickens daily

At this point I don't care about the hot swordsman with Orphic themes at all. I only care about the heathcliffean master craftsman
#*they said less than 24 hours after finishing a book on traditional Chinese fencing with the jian*#A lot of things reminded me of Jingliu. Some of them of Blade‚ yes. And perhaps even more things about Jing Yuan#But many many things reminded me of Jingliu#I may save some lines here later#Anyway... They didn't have to make Yingxing a revengeful shy self-conscious child#regarded as nothing in the society he grew up in but that came to be an arrogant craftsman skilled beyond any expectation#Yet they did#And now I am bound to love him#It's like they took the traits of my favourite type of character‚ story‚ trope and motif#and shaped them into a very aesthetically pleasant man#But I'm so mad. I can't stop thinking about him. He haunts my every hour#It's been what? Two months almost? In the rare occasions in which I'm not thinking about him I'm thinking about Jing Yuan#What a good character he is. And totally the type of character I love too. Checks all the boxes#Goodness I am so afraid of being let down by their writing. The potential is so good#The pieces are so well set‚ the parts are so neatly crafted together for now. It would be such a pity to waste it all#I talk too much#I should probably delete this later

not going to the gym tonight because I have a work meeting from 6.30 to 7 (🤬) and then it’ll be Too Late but that’s okay because I’ve started re-reading Piranesi and I’m completely swept up in it. also I need to dedicate some time to Cleaning and Organising the flat and I’ve designated today as the day to do it :)
#Piranesi is so so good. I think it might be my favourite fiction book of all time. <- bold statement I’ll review after the re-read#my project at work that I’ve been working on for the past two years is coming to an end at the start of June…#very curious to see how my work life will be shaped after that.#I think most probably it will be great momentum to finally Look for Another Job
