Bone Cancer Treatment in India
Tumblr media
Bone cancer can begin in any bone in the body, but it most commonly affects the pelvis or the long bones in the arms and legs. Bone cancer is rare, making up less than 1 percent of all cancers. In fact, noncancerous bone tumors are much more common than cancerous ones.
Bone Cancer Treatment:
Treatment for bone cancer depends on various factors such as the type, stage, and location of the cancer, as well as the patient's overall health. The main treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. The choice of treatment depends on individual factors and is determined by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals.
Symptoms:
Symptoms of bone cancer may include persistent bone pain, swelling or a lump near the affected area, fractures or breaks in the bone with minimal trauma, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss. However, these symptoms can also be associated with other conditions, so it is important to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosing bone cancer involves a combination of medical history review, physical examination, imaging tests (such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI, or bone scans), and biopsy. A biopsy is a procedure to obtain a sample of the affected bone tissue for examination under a microscope to confirm the presence of cancer.
Treatment Risks/Complications:
Treatment for bone cancer carries potential risks and complications. Surgery may involve risks such as infection, bleeding, nerve damage, or complications related to anesthesia. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, hair loss, fatigue, and increased susceptibility to infections. Targeted therapy and immunotherapy may have specific side effects depending on the drugs used. The healthcare team closely monitors patients and manages these risks and complications throughout the treatment process.
Causes:
The exact cause of bone cancer is often unknown. However, certain factors may increase the risk, such as genetic mutations, previous radiation exposure, certain inherited conditions, and certain bone diseases or conditions. In some cases, bone cancer may develop without any identifiable cause.
Procedure & Recovery:
The specific procedure and recovery process for bone cancer treatment depend on factors such as the type, stage, and location of the cancer, as well as the chosen treatment modality. Surgery may involve removing the tumor and nearby affected tissues, followed by reconstruction if necessary. Recovery involves managing pain, physical therapy, and rehabilitation to restore function. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy may be used alone or in combination to target cancer cells and reduce the risk of recurrence.
Treatment Preparation:
Treatment preparation for bone cancer involves a thorough evaluation of the patient's health, including imaging tests, biopsy, and staging to determine the extent of the cancer. The healthcare team discusses treatment options, potential risks and benefits, and develops a personalized treatment plan. Treatment preparation may also involve coordinating with other specialists, such as orthopedic surgeons or radiation oncologists, as necessary.
Clinical Trials:
Clinical trials are research studies that investigate new treatments, therapies, and approaches for bone cancer. Participation in clinical trials may provide access to innovative treatments not yet widely available and contribute to advancements in the field. Patients can discuss the possibility of participating in clinical trials with their healthcare team to explore potential options.
Cost in India:
The cost of bone cancer treatment in India can vary depending on factors such as the type and stage of cancer, chosen treatment modalities, hospital charges, and individualized care plans. It is advisable to consult with healthcare providers and hospitals to obtain accurate cost estimates and explore insurance coverage options. Different hospitals and treatment centers may have varying costs, and financial counseling services may be available to assist patients in managing their healthcare expenses.
Side Effects:
Side effects of bone cancer treatment can vary depending on the specific treatment modalities used and individual response. Common side effects may include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, changes in appetite, increased susceptibility to infections, and bone marrow suppression. The healthcare team closely monitors patients and provides supportive care to manage these side effects and improve overall well-being.
The success rate of bone cancer treatment
depends on various factors, including the type, stage, and location of the cancer, as well as individual response to treatment. The prognosis can vary significantly. The healthcare team can provide more information on expected outcomes based on the specific circumstances of each case. Regarding the treatment diet, there is no specific diet to cure bone cancer. However, maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is generally recommended to support overall health, maintain proper nutrition, and aid in the recovery process. A registered dietitian can provide personalized dietary guidance based on individual needs and treatment goals.

Cancer awareness.
So last time someone asked me whether we celebrate Diwali or not I replied that we won't be this year since my uncle (my mother's brother) is on a ventilator. This was 11th November. On 13th November, my uncle passed away due to cancer.
Nobody knew he had cancer before. So let me take you on a journey of about four and a half months of cancer.
–July 2023.
So my uncle had a “wound” around his wisdom tooth. He was in pain and consulted a dentist 1. This dentist has done all the dental stuff in our family/relatives. A really good one. He said that it was an ulcer and it would be fine and gave some painkillers and other medicine to help it heal.
However, that did not work out and the pain only got worse. My uncle changed the doctor and went to the dentist 2. Now, this dentist is a well-known doctor and works in a very expensive hospital. And he has a clinic of his own. He said that they needed to extract the wisdom teeth. And after that, it will heal. So they did that.
The pain did not stop but it only got worse for even worse.
–August 2023.
When he did not get any relief, my uncle went to another hospital (which is one of the top hospitals in India). They did the scanning and we found out that he had stage 1 cancer in his mouth.
The doctors recommended he should get it operated and removed. So they did that. It was a shock for doctors that when they were operating on him, they found that it was not only in his mouth but in his throat as well. It looked like it started in the throat and its roots went towards his mouth.
They declared that it was not the first stage but the fifth stage of cancer.
Then his chemotherapy and radiation began. He was getting weaker quite faster since his upper jaw was operated on and he was on a liquid diet.
The treatment went on. He was fine at the beginning. Doing minor chores or taking himself to appointments. That did not last long.
–October 2023.
His health got worse and he was completely in bed. His breath would shorten even if went to the toilet which was just one step from his side. It would take minutes on minutes to get his breath at a normal rate.
It was around 14th October. We were there. My aunt helped my uncle bathe but things were not good. His breath was way too short and you could see his stomach getting sucked in when he was trying to breathe.
The next day was the day he was hospitalized.
The doctors said that his lungs were filled with water because of some infection which, to date, is not known.
They started taking out the water. They would fill many bottles every day. It was abnormal, to say the least, that there was that much water in his lungs.
–November 2023.
During that time, they took his bone marrow and tested it. Just to find out the cancer has spread in his bones as well. The doctors did another test whose results took almost a week to come back. The doctors said that if this test was positive, they can do another treatment which was basically the last thing they could do to save his life.
The test came out to be positive. And they prepared the injection. They took him to the ICU in order to keep him under observation for 24 hours according to the protocol of that injection.
This injection was supposed to extend his life by 2 years (maximum). This was an expensive injection costing ₹2,00,000 and this was to be given every three weeks.
Things didn't turn out well.
His health deteriorated. He already had a kidney problem for a long. His kidney doctors had asked him to buy a plot just in case they needed to perform a kidney transplant.
His creatinine increased dangerously and doctors suggested dylasis. They did that too. However, nothing worked and finally after two days, on 13th November, he took his last breath.
.
I made this post to share something that happened to us recently. Never have any of us thought this would happen to our close relatives/family. Cancer is a tricky thing.
The main fault was of Dentist 2 that he pulled his tooth out. Cancer attacks faster when it is touched. He should have taken cautionary steps while treating.
What's done is done. He can't come back and we hope he finds peace.
I just want to share this so you are aware of it. Always get proper tests done. Never take things lightly. Even if you see minor symptoms of anything, get it checked. I don't know what to say right now. But at least let's stay healthy and cautious.
Cancer is a sneaky nightmare. It took someone so close to us within a few months. It was a horrible and haunting thing.
I hope nothing like this happens to any of you. I love you guys so please let's stay healthy. Look after your friends, family, and yourself. Life is too short for regrets❤️.

Superfoods in Indian Diet; right from your kitchen
One of the best things about living in India is its food and the culinary heritage that we experience in every meal that we consume. No wonder; back in medieval times, India was the world’s most sought-after country due to its treasure of spices, hidden from the rest of the world. To the present day, the culinary diversity that we find in India cannot be found anywhere else in the world. However, despite having a plethora of food options that are readily and easily available, we often find ourselves purchasing inexpensive, imported alternatives.
There is a long list of food items that are so affordable that they can be found in every Indian household, yet they are inexpensive and often a luxury overseas, such as in the US. The list includes spices such as turmeric, cardamom, and ashwagandha (15x more expensive), grains such as millets and black gram (10x more expensive), and fruits and vegetables such as guava and jackfruit (20x more expensive). Without waiting any further, let’s learn about the Desi superfoods that you can add to your diet based on their affordability and availability.
Everyday Nutritional Powerhouses: Here, we will talk about the superfoods that are not only affordable but also readily available in our households.
Dal (lentils): Packed with some protein, fiber, and many essential minerals, dal is indeed a staple for a reason. You can explore diverse varieties like moong, masoor, tur, urad, and more for different nutritional benefits.
Leafy Greens: Do not try to underestimate the power of palak (spinach), methi (fenugreek), and sarson (mustard greens). Not only are these loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but they also boost your immunity in the chilling winter season.
Seasonal Fruits: Embrace the abundance of papaya, bananas, guavas, and oranges to fuel your body with vitamins and natural sugars.
Spices: We might know them as spices that add flavor to our meals; spices such as turmeric, ginger, garlic, and chili peppers are more than just flavor enhancers. They are anti-inflammatory powerhouses with many health benefits, such as regulating blood pressure and playing a major role in the prevention and treatment of various cancer types.
Yogurt: It is a natural source of probiotics for gut health, calcium for strong bones, and protein for muscle development. It can be consumed plain, flavored, or even with fruits.
Nourishing Yet Special: This category will include superfoods that are not as easily found in households like the ones mentioned above, yet they are hidden gems that carry more nutrients than you can take.
Millets: Ragi (finger millet), bajra (pearl millet), and jowar (sorghum) are some of the gluten-free grains that are rich in protein, fiber, and certain micronutrients. They’re most commonly used in rotis, dosas, or porridge.
Nuts & Seeds: Chia seeds, flaxseeds, and pumpkin seeds are packed with nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, essential minerals, and protein. You can soak them in water overnight before consuming them or directly sprinkle the seeds on your salads, yogurt, or porridge.
Amla (Indian Gooseberry): One of our top favorite superfoods, amla is a vitamin C powerhouse that boosts immunity, aids in digestion, and comes with anti-inflammatory properties. You can enjoy it raw, pickled, or in the form of juice.
Coconut: Another superfood like the Indian gooseberry, coconut water is the hub of electrolytes, while its flesh has healthy fats and fiber. While it grows in the south, coconut can be found easily in the northern regions of India. Although it is mostly consumed raw, coconut’s nectar and flesh also make it a key ingredient in various South Indian dishes.
Jackfruit: This versatile vegetable can be enjoyed unripe or ripe. Ripe jackfruit offers antioxidants and vitamins, while unripe jackfruit provides a meaty texture in vegetarian dishes.
Exquisite and Rare Nutritional Delights: Last but not least, this category will take you through some of the rare, expensive superfoods that are worth every penny that you spend on them.
Saffron: Found in the northernmost region of India, i.e., Kashmir, saffron adds a luxurious touch to many dishes and drinks while boasting anti-inflammatory and mood-boosting properties. Due to its scarcity, saffron is one of the most duplicated superfoods. Purchase saffron only from a reliable dealer.
Black Rice: A nutty-flavored rice rich in antioxidants and fiber and known for its longevity-promoting properties.
Ashwagandha: This powerful herb is an adaptogen that helps the body manage stress and improve stamina.
In the big picture, embracing India's diverse superfoods offers a treasure trove of health benefits while remaining kind to your wallet. From readily available lentils and greens to hidden gems like millets and amla, these culinary powerhouses pack a punch of nutrients without the hefty price tag of imported trends. So, explore the vibrant flavors of India, nourish your body with local abundance, and discover that superfoods don't have to be exotic or expensive.

Multiple Myeloma Treatment in India
Tumblr media
Multiple myeloma is a Blood disorder disease usually called Blood Cancer. Multiple myeloma can be treated by the Bone marrow transplant process.
In the initial stages of multiple myeloma, there are no symptoms but as the disease progresses, it may show some symptoms –
•          Bone Fractures
•          Bone pain
•          Tiredness/fatigue
•          Appetite loss/ weight loss
•          Kidney function problems
What is Multiple myeloma?
Basically, Multiple myeloma releases chemicals that create an imbalance in bone destruction and bone formation. This may cause a hole in bones or bone thinning.
Multiple myeloma generally occurs in men than women. It is gradually increasing in urban India.
What causes multiple myeloma?
There is a condition known as monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance. Where there is an excess of protein molecules, called immunoglobins, in your blood.
Black people are more likely to develop multiple myeloma than other people.
Family history of multiple myeloma
Multiple myeloma diagnosed in the mid 60’s.
Procedure to diagnose of Multiple myeloma
Test and procedure to diagnose multiple myeloma –
Blood Test – In this test, it may reveal M Proteins produced by myeloma cells.
Urine Test – Anaylsis of your urine test may show M proteins
Imaging Test – This test may be recommended to check bone problems associated with multiple myeloma. It may include X-Ray, CT Scan, MRI
Treatment of Multiple myeloma
Different types of doctors work together to create a patient’s overall treatment plan that combines different types of treatment.
Treatment plan may include different phases –
Induction therapy – for rapid control of cancer and to help relieve symptoms.
Chemotherapy or Bone marrow transplant/ Stem cell transplant
Maintenance therapy – over a long period of time to prevent cancer occurrence.
Types of medications used for multiple myeloma –
Chemotherapy - a drug treatment that uses powerful chemicals to kill fast growing cells in your body.
Targeted Therapy - a type of cancer treatment, that uses drugs to target specific genes and protiens that help cancer cells survive and grow.
Steriods - An anti-inflammatory medicines used to treat a range of conditions.
Immunotherapy - a type of cancer treatment that increases immune system to fight cancer. It helps your body fight against infections.
Bone-modifying drugs
Stem Cell Transplant
Stem cell transplantation is a treatment choice for individuals with multiple myeloma. There are three general kinds of transplantation  :-
● Autologous transplantation - The Stem cells are gotten  from your own blood or bone marrow. This is the kind of transplantation that is generally ordinarily suggested for treating multiple myeloma.
● Allogeneic transplantation - The Stem cells or bone marrow are gotten from a donor  with a tissue type matching yours. This kind of transplantation conveys exceptionally high risk and isn't suggested for the vast majority with numerous myeloma.
● Syngeneic transplantation - The stem cells or bone marrow are obtained from an identical twin. This is the ideal type of transplantation, albeit barely any individuals with different myeloma have an indistinguishable twin who can act as a donor.
Transplantation, when effective, prompts a reduction and drags out endurance; seldom, allogeneic transplantation fixes different myeloma. Notwithstanding, transplantation has a few limits. The high-portion chemotherapy given before transplantation generally neglects to kill all of the plasma cells, permitting the condition to backslide after transplantation. Such treatment likewise expands your gamble of serious contaminations and dying, which can be deadly.
Autologous foundational microorganism transplantation — Autologous stem cell organism transplantation alludes to transplantation with your own undeveloped cells. During this system, stem organisms are gathered and frozen for sometimes in the future. High-portion chemotherapy is then given to kill however many plasma cells as could be expected under the circumstances, and the stem organisms are defrosted and gotten back to your body. Foundational microorganisms can be acquired from the blood or the bone marrow; for this situation, getting them from the blood is liked, on the grounds that blood undeveloped cells move to tissues all the more rapidly and are less inclined to be tainted with malignant plasma cells.
As of now, autologous stem cell transplantation is appropriate for up to 50 percent of individuals with multiple myeloma. Autologous undeveloped cell transplantation isn't suggested for individuals with seething multiple myeloma (individuals with multiple myeloma who have no side effects).

Top Procedures in Interventional Radiology in India: All You Need to Know!
Interventional radiology (IR) is a revolutionary field of medicine that uses imaging technologies to perform minimally invasive procedures. These procedures are less risky than traditional surgeries, have shorter recovery times, and are often performed on an outpatient basis. The field has grown rapidly, offering numerous non-surgical treatments in India.
These non-surgical treatments are performed by interventional radiologists, who are medical doctors and are highly trained in both radiology and interventional procedures, allowing them to diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions effectively and with minimal risk to the patient. Their expertise spans various areas, including vascular, oncology, neurology, and gastrointestinal systems, making them integral to modern medical care.
Interventional radiology in India is gaining recognition for its innovative approach to diagnosing and treating various medical conditions. Interventional radiologists use imaging techniques such as X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and ultrasounds to guide small instruments like catheters through the body to treat diseases. This approach minimizes trauma, reduces infection risks, and shortens hospital stays.
Common Procedures performed in Interventional Radiology in India
Angiography and angioplasty: Angiography involves using X-ray imaging to visualize blood vessels. It helps diagnose blockages or abnormalities in the arteries or veins. When a blockage is found, angioplasty may be performed simultaneously, where a balloon is used to open up the narrowed or blocked blood vessels, often followed by placing a stent to keep the vessel open.
Embolization: It is a procedure where substances are injected to block or reduce blood flow to certain areas. It is commonly used to treat:
Uterine fibroids: Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) reduces blood flow to fibroids, causing them to shrink.
Liver tumors: Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) delivers chemotherapy directly to liver tumors while restricting their blood supply.
Varicocele: Embolization blocks the blood flow to the affected veins, reducing pain and swelling.
Thrombolysis: It involves dissolving blood clots using medications administered directly to the site of the clot via a catheter. It is particularly effective in treating deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
Ablation procedures: Interventional radiologists use ablation techniques such as radiofrequency, microwave, or cryoablation to precisely target and destroy tumors. These minimally invasive methods are particularly effective for tumors in organs like the liver, kidneys, or lungs, offering an alternative to traditional surgery. It uses extreme heat or cold to destroy abnormal tissues. Common types include:
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA): Uses heat to destroy cancer cells or abnormal tissues.
Cryoablation: uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy diseased tissues, particularly in treating certain cancers and cardiac arrhythmias.
Central venous access: For patients needing long-term intravenous treatments, interventional radiologists insert central lines or ports. This ensures reliable, continuous access to the bloodstream for administering medications, nutrients, or chemotherapy, reducing the need for repeated needle sticks.
Vertebral augmentation: Patients with painful vertebral compression fractures can benefit from procedures like vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. These involve injecting bone cement into the fractured vertebrae to stabilize them, significantly reducing pain and enhancing the patient’s mobility and quality of life.
Chemoembolization and radioembolization: Primarily used for liver cancer, these techniques combine embolization with the direct delivery of chemotherapy or radiation to the tumor. This approach maximizes treatment effectiveness while minimizing systemic side effects, providing targeted and efficient cancer therapy.
Biopsy: It involves using a needle to collect a small tissue sample for analysis, guided by imaging technologies. It is a minimally invasive procedure that offers important diagnostic and therapeutic advantages.
