Day 1 of Sarcoma Symposium - 2024: A Transformative Start!

Today marked the grand inauguration of the Sarcoma Symposium - 2024 at Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute. The event was graced by our esteemed leaders and distinguished guests including Dr. Krishnaiah K (CEO), Dr. T Subramanyeshwar Rao (Medical Director), Dr. Nori Dattatreya (Trust Board Member and Sr. Radiation Oncologist), Dr. Anand Raja (WIA Cancer Hospital, Adayar), Dr. Ashish Gulia (Director, Homi Baba Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, New Chandigarh), Dr. Kalpana Raghunath (Associate Director), Dr. Srinath Gupta (Orthopaedic Oncosurgeon) and Dr. Srijan Shukla (Surgical Oncologist), who collectively inaugurated this groundbreaking symposium.

The symposium featured a series of insightful sessions, starting with the basics of sarcoma, radiology red flags, and recent updates in musculoskeletal oncopathology. Participants engaged in comprehensive discussions on the management of soft tissue lumps and whoops sarcomas. The afternoon sessions included video demonstrations of wide excision of soft tissue sarcomas and current updates on rhabdomyosarcoma.

The day concluded with a debate on pre-operative versus post-operative radiotherapy in soft tissue sarcomas, followed by a comprehensive case-based panel discussion and sessions on retroperitoneal sarcomas, which wrapped up a successful first day.

Day 1 of the Sarcoma Symposium - 2024 was a testament to the dedication and collaboration of our esteemed speakers, participants, and organizers. We look forward to another day of valuable insights and discussions tomorrow.

Our Department of Orthopaedic Oncology and Surgical Oncology in association with Telangana Orthopaedic Surgeons Society (TOSA) held an Orthopaedic Oncology Symposium, on 11th December 2022 under the able guidance of Our Medical Director, Dr. T. Subramanyeshwar Rao. It was presided over by leading Orthopaedic Oncology specialists from across India such as Prof. Ashish Gulia and IMSOS President – Dr. Mandip Shah. The meet was attended by Orthopaedic and Oncology specialists from across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

The basics in Orthopaedic Oncology and the need for multidisciplinary management of Sarcomas were highlighted at the conference. Our Orthopaedic Oncology consultant Dr. Srinath Gupta discussed various limb salvage reconstruction options and their outcomes which were well received by all the delegates in attendance. Various panel discussions were conducted on the Management of benign and malignant bone tumors which were the highlight of the Conference.

Sarcoma Awareness Month is observed annually every July. ‘Sarcoma’ is the general term used to refer to a broad group of cancers that begin in the soft tissues and bones. Soft tissue sarcoma forms in the tissues that connect, support, and surround other body structures, including muscle, fat, blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and the lining of your joints. People can survive sarcoma if their cancer is diagnosed early, when treatments can be effective and before the sarcoma has spread to other parts of the body. It is vital that patients be referred to a specialist as early as possible.
