An inspiring update!
Bone marrow transplant (BMT) is a highly complex procedure requiring seamless teamwork among various experts. Our Pediatric Hematology Oncology and BMT team exemplified such collaboration in treating a lovely infant diagnosed with Leukocyte Adhesion Disease (LAD), a rare and dangerous genetic disorder affecting only 1 in 10 lakh people. Without prompt BMT treatment, LAD often leads to severe infections and can be fatal.
This case was particularly challenging as the child lacked a fully matched stem cell donor. Performing a half-match BMT is extremely demanding, but our dedicated team succeeded by using the child's father as the stem cell donor. Remarkably, the child not only endured the treatment but even enjoyed his hospital stay.
Now, one year post-BMT, the child is thriving with no complications and ready to embrace life. This journey showcases remarkable resilience and the effectiveness of timely, proper treatment.
Below, witness the heartwarming transformation: from a playful boy who once maneuvered his IV stand around the BMT ward to now proudly sitting on his doctor's lap with a stethoscope, a year after BMT.
We wish him all the best, a healthy life, and a bright future!

The Role of Bone Marrow Transplant in Blood Cancer Treatment Explained By The Blood Cancer Specialist In Surat
Blood cancers, such as leukaemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, affect thousands of people each year. These diseases disrupt the body’s ability to produce healthy blood cells, leading to a range of serious health issues. While various treatment options exist, our cancer specialists in Surat at BCI- Blood and Cancer Institute, have been using bone marrow transplant (BMT) as a powerful weapon in the fight against blood cancers. This blog post explores the crucial role of bone marrow transplant in blood cancer treatment, its process, benefits, and challenges.
Understanding Bone Marrow and Blood Cancer
Before delving into the transplant process, it’s essential to understand what bone marrow is and how it relates to blood cancer. Bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside our bones responsible for producing blood cells. In blood cancers, this process is disrupted, leading to the overproduction of abnormal cells or the underproduction of healthy cells.
What is a Bone Marrow Transplant?
A bone marrow transplant, also known as a stem cell transplant, is a procedure that replaces damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells. These new stem cells can then produce healthy blood cells, effectively “resetting” the patient’s blood and immune system.
Types of Bone Marrow Transplants
Cancer specialists in Surat explain the two main types of bone marrow transplants:
1. Autologous Transplant: The patient receives their own stem cells, which are collected and stored before high-dose chemotherapy or radiation treatment.
2. Allogeneic Transplant: The patient receives stem cells from a donor, either a family member or an unrelated individual with matching tissue type.
The Bone Marrow Transplant Process
The BMT process must be performed at a reputed blood cancer hospital in Surat and typically involves several steps:
1. Preparation: The patient undergoes tests to assess their health and determine the best treatment plan.
2. Conditioning: High-dose chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy is administered to destroy cancer cells and prepare the body for the new stem cells.
3. Stem Cell Collection: Stem cells are collected from the patient (autologous) or a donor (allogeneic).
4. Transplantation: The collected stem cells are infused into the patient’s bloodstream.
5. Engraftment: The transplanted stem cells begin to produce new, healthy blood cells.
6. Recovery and Follow-up: The patient is closely monitored for complications and undergoes regular check-ups.
Benefits of Bone Marrow Transplant in Blood Cancer Treatment
Bone marrow transplant offers several significant benefits in the treatment of blood cancers, share some of the best hemato-oncologists in Surat:
1. Potential for Cure: For some patients, BMT can lead to long-term remission or even cure of their blood cancer.
2. Higher Dose Treatments: BMT allows for the use of higher doses of chemotherapy or radiation, which can be more effective in eliminating cancer cells.
3. Immune System Reset: In allogeneic transplants, the donor’s immune system can help fight any remaining cancer cells, a phenomenon known as the graft-versus-tumour effect.
4. Treatment for Relapsed Cancers: BMT can be an effective option for patients whose cancer has returned after initial treatment.
5. Improved Quality of Life: Successful transplants can lead to significant improvements in patients’ overall health and quality of life.
Challenges and Risks
While bone marrow transplant can be a life-saving procedure, it’s not without risks and challenges:
1. Graft-versus-Host Disease: In allogeneic transplants, the donor’s immune cells may attack the patient’s healthy tissues.
2. Infections: Patients are at high risk of infections during and after the transplant due to a weakened immune system.
3. Organ Damage: The high-dose treatments used in preparation for BMT can potentially damage organs.
4. Graft Failure: There’s a risk that the transplanted stem cells may not engraft properly.
5. Emotional and Psychological Impact: The lengthy and intense treatment process can be emotionally challenging for patients and their families.
Conclusion
Bone marrow transplant plays a crucial role as part of leukaemia treatment in Surat, offering hope to many patients who may have limited treatment options. While it comes with significant challenges, the potential benefits often outweigh the risks for many individuals. As research continues and techniques improve, bone marrow transplantation is likely to become an even more effective and widely used treatment for blood cancers.
For patients undergoing blood cancer treatment in Surat, it’s essential to discuss all options, including bone marrow transplant, with their healthcare team. Each case is unique, and the decision to undergo a transplant should be made based on individual circumstances, considering factors such as the type and stage of cancer, overall health, and personal preferences.

Our specialists then create personalized treatment plans tailored to the patient’s condition, taking into account factors such as age, health status, and the specific characteristics of their leukemia.
Chemotherapy Chemotherapy remains one of the primary treatments for leukemia. It involves using drugs to destroy cancer cells and prevent them from multiplying. Depending on the type of leukemia, chemotherapy can be given as an initial treatment to induce remission or as part of a pre-transplant conditioning regimen. At BMT Clinic, we offer both inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy services, ensuring that patients receive the appropriate care in a comfortable and supportive environment. In India, the field of allogeneic bone marrow transplant has advanced significantly, offering patients access to high-quality care and innovative treatments.
Understanding the Allogeneic BMT Procedure
An allogeneic bone marrow transplant requires a donor whose stem cells are compatible with the recipient's. This compatibility is determined by human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing. The process involves several key stages:
Pre-Transplant Preparation: Before the transplant, the patient undergoes extensive pre-transplant evaluations, including blood tests, imaging studies, and other assessments to determine the best course of action. The patient also undergoes a conditioning regimen, which typically involves chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy to destroy the existing diseased marrow and make space for the new cells.
Stem Cell Collection: The donor’s stem cells are collected, either from their bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood. The choice of source depends on several factors, including the patient's condition and the availability of suitable donors.
Transplant Procedure: The collected stem cells are infused into the patient’s bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) line. The procedure is relatively straightforward but requires close monitoring to manage any immediate side effects and complications.
Post-Transplant Care: After the transplant, the patient remains in a specialized care unit for monitoring and treatment of potential complications such as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), infections, and organ damage. Comprehensive Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia in India: Key Insights and Resources.
Sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassemia are two major genetic blood disorders prevalent in India, significantly impacting the lives of affected individuals and their families. Advances in medical treatment have improved outcomes, but challenges remain. In this article, we delve into the treatment options available in India, focusing on key resources such as bone marrow transplants and specialized doctors. We'll explore the importance of locating the best facilities and professionals, particularly in Delhi, which is home to some of the country's top medical experts.
Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia: An Overview
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD): SCD is characterized by the production of abnormal hemoglobin, causing red blood cells to become rigid and sickle-shaped. This leads to severe pain, organ damage, and an increased risk of infections. The condition is particularly prevalent in central, eastern, and southern India.
Thalassemia:Thalassemia is a group of inherited disorders affecting hemoglobin production. This results in chronic anemia and can cause various health complications. High prevalence areas include Punjab, Gujarat, and Assam.
Treatment Options for Sickle Cell Disease
Hydroxyurea: This medication is widely used to reduce the frequency of pain crises and the need for blood transfusions. It works by increasing fetal hemoglobin levels, which can help reduce the sickling of red blood cells.
Blood Transfusions:Regular transfusions help manage anemia and prevent complications. However, they can lead to iron overload, necessitating the use of iron chelation therapy.
Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT): BMT offers a potential cure for SCD by replacing faulty bone marrow with healthy marrow from a donor. In Delhi, specialized centers offer state-of-the-art facilities for BMT, with many patients traveling to the city for its advanced treatment options.

I post my Abby Cosplay on here but I haven't explained a lot about myself to my followers. Today I am going to explain why Cosplay is so important to me and why I started. Lets go back to 2013 to 2014, I was in a really toxic relationship. My confidence was at an all time low. I was too nervous to pursue my dreams or do what I loved to do because I was with such a negative person. That spring I found out I had Mono and Croup combined. I was still in school at that time and I ended up missing a lot of school and almost didn't pass because I was in and out of the hospital so much. My partner had Mono for months and never informed me he had it. His friend was the one who finally told me what was going on so that I could go to the doctor because he knew how sick I was. I went months without treatment which made my platelets elevate. Unfortunately they never came back down and I was diagnosed with blood cancer. Finally when I seen a specialist they said that I wouldn't have gotten sick until I was in my 60's or not at all explaining that the Mono brought it on sooner otherwise it would just lay dormant. I was devastated because I knew how this would alter my life. At that time I was told that I could live 25 to 30 years with it. Fast forward to 2021, I found out it had progressed and that I have Cancer of the Bone Marrow. I developed a gene mutation that causes scarring of the bone marrow. My hematologist told me that I had 2 years to live without a transplant. And anyone going through this process knows that a bmt is super risky and not guaranteed. So I went for a second opinion and that specialist said that I could live up to 15 years without a transplant as long as my organs and blood continued to hold their own. I felt a lot of relief from that appointment but I still felt so much anger and hurt from the whole situation because I feel like this could have been prevented in the beginning if I was with an honest and caring partner. What made it worse was that he went on to sign an NHL Contract and live "his best life" meanwhile I was struggling to live everyday normally. I live a lot of my days in pain. I'm on a lot of medication. But I desperately needed an escape from my reality. That is when my current partner said, "Well you love The Last Of Us. And you love Abby Anderson's Character, ever think about Cosplay?" Honestly I knew nothing about it, it was all new to me. But once I started it became my passion. It was the great escape. I felt like I could relate to Abby and Abby's Character made me feel like a stronger version of myself that I needed to be. Honestly this is why I do it and I wouldn't change it for anything. So to anyone going through a hard time, please find your passion. I promise it will make the next day that much easier. ❤️
