★ Happy #StackSaturday! What are you #currentlyreading? I just started Shattered Souls by @beck_michaels! This is the third book in Beck’s epic dark fantasy Guardians of the Maiden series and I am so glad to have discovered it, because it is a favorite of mine. I’ve waited an embarrassing amount of time to start this one, but it was a bit like coming home when I did! I’ve missed these characters so much. Peak tension and angst, incredible world building, characters you love and hate, found family, forbidden romance, an epic quest … this series has everything I love about fantasy (with fantastic romance, too!). Highly recommend these ones! This is one for the Throne of Glass, Falling Kingdoms, and Witchlands fans out there. ♥️ I just got my special edition box for Shattered Souls in the mail and wow, no author does boxes like Beck, I am telling you. Everything is so nice and perfect. Joining a club was one of the many conditions imposed upon Serori by her mother. At a new school, in a new prefecture, she was sure the hope was that she’d stay out of trouble and not fall into old habits. Joining a club was just another way to try and keep her busy. Truthfully, nothing at Gekkoukan jumped out at her, but she’d played rugby back in Osaka, and even if the girls rugby team wasn’t any good here, it was familiar.

What she hadn’t expected was being appointed captain. A third-year transfer student becoming captain seemed pretty unbelievable to her, and it wasn’t like she even wanted the position. Yet, with her muscular frame, height, and natural athleticism, it looked like the other players hoped she could lead them to victory if they followed her lead.

Or something like that. For now, she just had everyone running laps for nearly the entire practice, while she worked out in the gym alone. Considering how poor everyone’s conditioning was, it was no wonder they weren’t any good. Maybe they’d end up regretting putting her in charge, or maybe they’d get enough stamina to keep up with her real practice ideas.

After finishing up her sets, Serori put away the weights she’d been using, only to notice an serious-looking girl with a ponytail frowning at her from the gym’s doorway. Wiping sweat from her face, Serori frowned right back, crossing her arms over her chest. “Hey. You got some kind of problem?”

                           there are  many,  many  reasons he’s probably wrong  --  from his looks to the fact that he insists on continuing to refer to anyone beneath the upper upper class as  commoners  --  but for what it’s worth,  he’s willing to make the effort.

It’s still weird being friends with Rise. As much as Kanji thinks he knows her pretty well, sees her as a classmate and an equal, the illusion breaks when they bike down to the strip mall and she gets recognized. Always handling it with grace, too. Damn. 

“Y’know, I can make one hell of a good scary bodyguard type dude if you need.” He informs her after the most recent overzealous fan has been sent off. “I don’t get why they won’t let you live your damn life. Nobody wants to be bothered like that all the time. It’s stupid.” A huff passes through his lips, eyes still glued to the back of the girl flouncing away.

     The sudden touch to her hand nearly has her drawing it back in shock, only for the pianist to be faster to hold it. She...doesn’t get this. Why is Akamatsu doing this? She’s...she’s not someone that deserves something like this. Maki isn’t as good of a person as the other would like to think. She’s an assassin, she’s killed people and even if she had her reasons for being one it...doesn’t make it any better.

     So then why? Maki expected to be pushed away, feared, hated for the person that she is and yet...she’s not. For this to be happening is...something she didn’t expect. But then again, it’s Akamatsu of all people. The pianist was so optimistic, so friendly and she believed in everyone. So maybe it’s not too far out of left field for this to be happening.

     Hesitantly, her hand shifts ever so slightly enough to hold hers more properly. It’s...warm, she has to note. Warm and soft but also comforting...she really never realized how this could feel. She doesn’t hate this feeling but it’s...not something she’s used to. But still, she’s glad for this.

     “...Thanks. For...not pushing me away. I don’t get why you’re doing this but you’ve always been stubborn, haven’t you?” Always stubborn, always believing. Like a certain idiot. “...Don’t change from that, okay? And...do you mind if we stay like this for just a little bit longer?” It’s selfish but...she doesn’t want this warm feeling to disappear so soon.

Hunger

Serori’s juniors were good girls... for the most part. Still, like any other teens, if they were cooped up too long with nothing to do, they got bored, and when they got bored, they got mischievous. For once, they’d managed to show up for a meeting of the student council and the sports clubs to discuss funding and other boring things like that, but a tire problem with a bus transporting many of the clubs back from a meet had left everyone sitting around with nothing to do.

“Psst, senpai!” One of the first-years tapped her on the shoulder. “We’re playing the king game, do you wanna play?”

Not long after, she held a scrap of paper in her hand, a neat 3 scrawled upon it. Just her luck that in however many rounds it’d been, she’d neither been the king, nor had her number called. Well, whatever. It wasn’t like she cared much about the game, so much as the team stayed in line and didn’t cause any more trouble for her than she was sure she was already in.

Word spread that the bus was almost back at Gekkoukan, and Kaho, the trouble-making vice-captain, stood up abruptly. “Last round!” she announced, palms slapping flat upon the desk in front of her. “So we’re gonna make it an exciting one! My final act as king is to order whoever’s number I call to go up to whoever they think is the best looking in the room, and kiss them!” Scattered gasps spread throughout the rugby team as everyone looked down at their numbers. “And, I pick number 3!”

Serori groaned, balling her paper up and tossing it at Kaho’s face. “You’re a pain,” she muttered, even as she leaned forward in her chair and stood to look around. No matter what, she definitely��wasn’t gonna kiss someone on her own team, but most of the clubs here were boys’ teams. That really only left their managers, a few scattered smaller clubs, and...

Well, whatever. The student council president was pretty good-looking, and Serori expected some kind of shocked or flustered expression that would surely make the whole thing worth it. Across the room, Mitsuru Kirijo was engaged in conversation with some other member of the student council. Striding over to her, Serori quickly rested her hand against the other third-year’s cheek, turning her head towards her before pressing a quick, if surprisingly soft, kiss against her lips.

“King game,” she offered in explanation, studding her hands in her pockets and nodding over to the wide-eyed rugby team huddled together in the corner of the room. “Pretty sure I just won, so, thanks.”
