10. What scares them about entering a relationship?
For your Moon, Stars and Consort ship!
It is always, without fail, the inherent vulnerability of it all.
Anam is someone who has lived an unkind life and is fully aware of the damage it has done to him as a person. He is also very naturally reserved and chronically self-loathing. Opening up brings with it the fear that he might pass that same hurt onto the hearts of those he loves so dearly, or that they might come to learn the more horrible things he has done. The last thing he wants is for them is to see that part of him.
But he is slowly coming to realise that it's inevitable. That trust has to go both ways.
And that, when someone loves you for your entire self, it means the darker parts too. For better or worse, he can't hide his heart forever.
He doesn't quite realise yet why that is so much more terrifying.
Thank you for the ask! I had to think on this a while~ <3

Where there is a depth of awareness, there is a reverence for presence. Where consciousness is dulled, distant, or blind, the presence grows faint and vanishes. Consequently, awareness is one of the greatest gifts you can bring to your friendship. Many people have an anam cara of whom they are not truly aware. Their lack of awareness cloaks the friend’s presence and causes feelings of distance and absence. Sadly, it is often loss that awakens presence, by then it is too late. It is wise to pray for the grace of recognition. Inspired by awareness, you may then discover beside you the anam cara of whom your longing has always dreamed.
The Celtic tradition recognized that an anam cara friendship was graced with affection. Friendship awakens affection. The heart learns a new art of feeling. Such friendship is neither cerebral nor abstract. In Celtic tradition, the anam cara was not merely a metaphor or ideal. It was a soul bond that existed as a recognized and admired social construct. It altered the meaning of identity and perception. When your affection is kindled, the world of your intellect takes on a new tenderness and compassion. The anam cara brings epistemological integration and healing. You look and see and understand differently. Initially, this can be disruptive and awkward, but it gradually refines your sensibility and transforms your way of being in the world.
People talk incessantly about relationships. Unfortunately, however, “relationship” has become an empty center around which our lonely hunger forages for warmth and belonging. Much of the public language of intimacy is hollow, and its incessant repetition only betrays the complete absence of intimacy. Real intimacy is a sacred experience. It never exposes its secret trust and belonging to the voyeuristic eye of a neon culture. Real intimacy is of the soul, and the soul is reserved.
When you find the person you love, an act of ancient recognition brings you together. It is as if millions of years before the silence of nature broke, your lover’s clay and your clay lay side by side. Then in the turning of the seasons, your one clay divided and separated. You began to rise as distinct clay forms, each housing a different individuality and destiny. Without even knowing it, your secret memory mourned your loss of each other. While your clay selves wandered for thousands of years through the universe, your longing for each other never faded. This metaphor helps to explain how in the moment of friendship two souls suddenly recognize each other. It could be a meeting on the street, or at a party or a lecture, or just a simple, banal introduction, then suddenly there is the flash of recognition and the embers of kinship glow. There is an awakening between you, a sense of ancient knowing. Love opens the door of ancient recognition. You enter. You come home to each other at last. As Euripides said, “Two friends, one soul.” Each recognized the other as the one in whom their heart could be at home.

WHY DO WE NEED RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS IN INDIA
In a bid to modernise education, Assam's Education Minister stated in September that government-run madrasas and 'tols' (Sanskrit schools) will undergo a 6-month transition to become normal schools under the Secondary Education Board of Assam commencing in November 2020. (SEBA).
As per research conducted by schools in Mumbai according to the Minister, the state made this choice a few years ago and was now putting it into action because "religious instruction cannot be carried out with government subsidies in a secular country."
The Madrasa Education Board will be disbanded, and the Sanskrit Tols would be given over to the Kumar Bhaskarvarma Sanskrit University and "transformed into centres of learning and research where Indian culture, civilisation, and nationalism will be studied," according to the declaration.
About 614 Madrasas are run by the Assam government, while another 2000 or more are run privately, largely by the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind. In the state, there are roughly 100 government-run Sanskrit tols and 500 private ones.
Another survey done by schools in Pune shows that as reasonable as the move may appear for a modern-day secular state attempting to redirect public funds from religious to mainstream education, minority organisations such as the All Assam Muslim Students' Association (AAMSA), the All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU),
The Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Hind, and Muslim clerics, all of whom claimed that the reforms were driven by an anti-Muslim agenda – e Similar demonstrations erupted in 2015, when Maharashtra declared madrasas and Vedic Pathshalas that did not teach mainstream topics to be "non-schools" and so ineligible for state financing.
Madrasas are traditional schools or colleges that teach Islamic religious education, albeit this is not always the case.
Most madrasas affiliated with the Deoband school of thought, according to members of Jamiat-Ulema-e-Hind, follow the Darse Nizami syllabus, which covers the study of the Quran, Fiqh (jurisprudence), Islamic law, history, theology, and philosophy, as well as Arabic grammar.
"There isn't a single city in India without one," says Arshad Madani, an Asian Muslim scholar of Darul Uloom of Deoband, who was interviewed by Victor Mallet for the Financial Times in October 2015 on the issue of madrasas.
Deobandi madrasas account for 91% of all madrasas." According to Mr. Mallet's study, there were an estimated six million students graduating from madrasas in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India in 2015, with some graduates of madrasas in Pakistan and Afghanistan proving to be international terrorists and murders.
Mahfuz Anam, a Bangladeshi newspaper editor and father of novelist Tahmima Anam, is quoted in the same article as saying that "there is an underbelly of religious intolerance that has grown through Madrasa education," referring to liberal bloggers being hacked to death in Dhaka.
Because courses of formal education like as math, science, and other subjects of formal education are still seen as robbing madrasas of their "spirit of Islam," and are only provided as optional curriculum in most madrasas, these graduates are diverted away from the mainstream.
Recognizing these graduates on the same level as other graduates (from traditional universities) would be unfair to both parties.
Furthermore, if the government were to support and strengthen a parallel curriculum for a specific segment of the population, as well as establish plans and reserves to ensure that these individuals may participate in both professional education and public service.
Leaving aside the claim that conservative Islamist teachings in madrasas fuel violent extremism, the question we have here is how constitutionally legitimate it is to expect the "secular" State to fund educational institutions that preach "the spirit of Islam" or any other religion in defiance of state-imposed syllabi.
While considering the aforementioned question, this series of articles will also assess the role of the federal government in identifying religious minorities and examine the available data to identify the segments of minorities that benefit the most from government funding and schemes, among other things.
WHAT THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION SAYS
Although the Indian Constitution does not define the term "minority," it does grant religious and linguistic minorities significant privileges in terms of establishing and maintaining educational institutions.
Article 30 stipulates that the state does not discriminate on the basis of religion when granting aid or recognition, and that religious and linguistic minorities are free to create and govern educational institutions.
Article 28(1), on the other hand, states that "no religious teaching shall be provided in any educational institution fully sustained out of State money," unless the school "has been formed under any endowment or trust that necessitates such religious instruction."
This is also subject to the proviso that no State-funded minority educational institution will force a student or attendee to participate in or be subjected to religious instruction.
Despite being fully supported, madrasas that do not teach state-set syllabi and simply promote Islam admit youngsters from the Muslim community and religious instructions are essential to follow.
Similarly, despite the fact that Vedas are not exclusive to any one community, if state-funded pathshalas/tols do not provide normal education and the religious curriculum is necessary for all students, both such institutions violate Article 28.
When you consider this in the context of Article 14, which mandates equality before the law or equal protection under the law, it's clear that the State cannot afford any special privileges to minority institutions that primarily impart religious instruction or those that force it into their curriculum for all students. If such privileges are granted, they will be unconstitutional.

“I’m okay, as long as you don't mind. I wasn't going to wear it for long anyway. I thought it would be fun to play in the water together. Lemme just put on some sunscreen real quick, I would have done it early, but I didn't feel like showing up with my own fur coat.” Ziz smiled apologetically as she dug around in her beach bag. Her brow furrowed as she searched, “I know I put a bottle of spray-on in here, so where is it.”
Admitting defeat and apparent forgetfulness, she grabbed the regular tropical scent lotion reserved for occasions such as this. Quickly rubbing it into her skin, in all the places she could reach, that is, she held the tube out to her companion. And scratch at her sunburned, not blushing, cheek.
“Do you mind getting my back?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A fae cackled silently and grinned at her partner, “if this keeps progressing in the right direction, we’ll have plenty of time to ourselves, anam cara.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It took Bones a moment to compute what it was you wanted. When he did, you weren’t the only one “not blushing”. “Sure,” he said, taking the tube. “Uh…just a minute…”
He walked around you, glad you couldn’t see his skull, which was rapidly turning blue. “Sorry if this is cold,” he said, squeezing the tube. He intended to get just a bit of lotion but the tube made a horrible farting noise and quite a lot of lotion spattered his hand and your back. Bones dropped the offending tube into the sand. “Sorry,” he said again. He really wasn’t sure what to do.

Rus cringed in secondhand embarrassment. “Oh geez…”

Where: A hotel in Orlando, Florida
When: March 22nd, 2019 (sometime at night)
Trigger Warnings: slight nsfw
Mentions: @haizzsf and kelley jakle
Side Notes: dumb ass me forgot to post this
Anna: The day so far has been perfect. It was their one year anniversary, and Anna couldn't believe what a crazy but beautiful year it's been for her and Adam. She loved him, the women has never been more in love with anyone (aside from the twins) ever. But with Adam, god she was so in love with him. She'd do anything for him and the fact that he just proposed to her made her fall in love with him more. Sure marriage scared the hell out of her, but so did becoming a mom and she's been doing good with that. They had reservations at a restaurant on the beach in Downtown Disney but the two didn't even bother going. After making love to one another, Anna was laying ontop of him, her bare body pressed against his and she smiled softly. Bitting her lips, Anna looked into his eyes for a few moments and the brunette kissed him deeply "Hi." She whispered, and then laughed a little. Looking at her hand, with the ring on her finger Anna swallowed hard and bit her lips again "I didn't really look at the ring, but now that I'm looking at it, it's beautiful. I love you."
Adam: He had known for weeks now leading up to their anniversary trip in Florida that he had wanted to propose to Anna. The day had gone great, and Adam couldn’t have asked for anything better. The hotel staff was wonderful and helped him as much as he could in getting this surprise ready for Anna, and after she had said yes, they had only gone to the beach for a little while to take pictures of Anna’s ring and spend some time by the water, forgoing their actual dinner reservation on the beach instead before they headed back to their hotel in Universal. It had been a while and they had spent the rest of the night in bed with one another, his breath heavy as he ran a free hand through his hair, the other hand of his gently rubbing against the skin of her back. “Hi,” Adam whispers back, letting out a laugh. “I love you too. Make sure you thank Hailee too, if it weren’t for her, I’m not sure who else would have known your taste in rings. Do you like it?”
Anna: This was a huge surprise to the brunette, Adam proposing tonight was a huge surprise and aside from finding out she was actually pregnant, this was on of the best surprises of her life. Anna liked this because it was different, they only talked about marriage once or twice but with her ex Ben that was the main topic of their conversations and if Anna was being honest, that's probably why she ended it within two days. She was happy, Anna was beyond happy and in love and the actress was so lucky to have had Adam come into her life when he did. The way he proposed was perfect, simple, and beautiful. It was spelled out in Anna's favorite flowers. Laying ontop of him, with her naked body on his the actress was quiet for a few moments. You could only hear her breathing slowly, and then actress got chills all up and down her body when Adam was running his hand gently against her back. "I will. I promise. You could've gone to Kelley, but I'm glad it was Hailee." She whispered, and kissed him deeply, adding tongue.
Adam: “I would have gone to Kelley next if Hailee didn’t have a lot of ideas about the ring, but she seemed to really have a good idea about it.” Adam leans up a little to gently press his lips to Anna’s and then pulls back to look at her, letting out a small moan as he bit on his lower lip and stared up at her. “You know something?” He whispers, his fingers still tracing along the skin of her back. “I /really/ want to fuck you right now, and I can’t.”
Anna: "I'll be sure to thank Hail when I see her." Anna said, smiling softly but then bites down a bit on his lower lip while he moans. As he's looking up at her, Anna's pointer finger traces small circles on his forehead but then lets out a soft hum "Hmm?" She questioned, but then laughed a little "I want to fuck you right now too, but that's not my fault. You're the one that knocked me up. Now we have to wait six weeks. How long has it been, only three so far right?" She questioned, teasing him but kissed his lips "Is it even safe for us to be laying like this, naked and ontop of one another?"
Adam: “Hm...” Adam lets out another soft noise, a hum—and he nods his head. “Oooh, so you’re blaming me for that? I see how it is,” Adam laughed a little, “Almost four, now. We’re almost there, babe.” He kisses her back, but raises an eyebrow and laughs as he shakes his head. “Babe, you’re laying on me, not riding me. I think we’re good.”
Anna: As he lets out a soft hum, the actress moaned a little and closed her eyes for a bit. Laughing now, she nodded her head "Yes. I'm blaming you that we can't have sex for six weeks, this isn't my fault." She bit her lips, and then bit his once again and then moved her lips from his to Adam's neck, and she groaned in frustration "We'll still have two more weeks to go." Anna said, but then glares at him "Don't laugh. I don't know what we can and can't do during these sexless six weeks, I mean obvisouly we just did oral which I wouldn't mind doing again.. but I.." Stopping herself, Anna kissed him deeply to shut herself up
Adam: “/You/ had them! I just helped.” Adam laughs, shaking his head. He tilts his head a little, biting down harder on his lower lip with a groan. He brings his other hand around her back and pulls her closer, further into him. “Now you’re just making me want to do it again...” He mumbles against her lips, kissing her back.
Anna: When he shakes his head, Anna runs her fingers through his hair and moves her lips from his neck to his chest "I did have them. I did give birth to Weston an Lennon, /but/ you knocked me up." Anna continued to protest, and she kissed his lips deeply "Do it..." She whispered into his ear "Again..."
Adam: His eyes lift and watch her as her lips move down from his neck and to his chest, and his breath is heavy once more. He gently presses his fingertips into her hips and scoots up a little to sit up, pressing his lips to her own. “You drive me crazy,” He whispers playfully. “Lay down,”
Anna: With him breathing heavy, Anna continued to move her lips down his chest but stops once he scoots up a little. Raising an eyebrow, Anna pushed her hair out of her face and let out a huff "You /just/ proposed to me and you're telling me that I drive you crazy?" She questioned, and did exactly she was told, which was to lay down.
Adam: “It’s not like I’m telling you that because you drive me crazy in a terrible way. You really think I would have just asked you to be my wife if that’s the case?” Adam laughed a little, angling himself so he’s laying over her as she lays down herself and her back hits the mattress. He leans down, his lips pressing against her stomach.
Anna: While she was laying down, Anna closed her eyes for a few moments as Adam got ontop of her. Getting chills all up and down her body, Anna bit down hard on her lips while his touched her stomach "Shit." She moaned, for some reason that just really turned her on and Anna gripped onto the sheets.
Adam: Licking along his lower lip, Adam groaned against Anna’s skin and kept his kisses moving downwards. His lips pressed heavily into her stomach and down her waist until he stops and uses his hands to gently push her legs apart again.
Anna: When he presses his lips against her stomach, Anna starts to breath heavy and the actress uses her free hand to run her fingers through his hair. But as he stops, Anna licks her lips and swallows hard while he pushes her legs apart. "We.., we're sure that /this/ is okay, right?" She questioned, probably ruining the moment but Anna was clueless
Adam: He’s too caught in the moment to let Anna’s words register as quickly as they should have, and just as he looks up at her, he lets out a small breath. “Hm,” He whispers, before nodding his head. “Yes, baby. I wouldn’t be doing it if it wasn’t safe. We just can’t...” He breaths out heavily. “We just can’t have actual sex yet.”
Anna: Listening to him talk, Anna nodded her head and pushed her hair out of her face. "Okay, yeah you're right. Sorry." She whispered, and then licked her lips "Continue." Anna demanded, and smirked a little
Adam: Continuing to look up at her for a few moments, Adam reaches up and gently runs his hand through her hair, moving a few strands from her face. “I wouldn’t do anything that would hurt you, baby.” He whispers. “I just wanna make you feel good...”
Anna: When he moves a few strands of hair away from her face, Anna closes her eyes and nods her head "I love you." She whispered, and took a breath "Make me feel good, /please/" She whispered, begged really and then bit her lips while looking at him now.
Adam: “I love you too. Tell me to stop if you want me to...” He whispers back to her, then leans back down again. His hands are still resting on both of her thighs since he had gently pulled her legs apart before he leaned forward, pressing his mouth into her.
Anna: Shaking her head no, Anna bit down on her lips again and closed her eyes, moaning as he started to begin. "shit..." was all she could say. Once they finished, Anna just laid there and smiled softly to herself thinking that soon shell become the future Mrs.Adam Levine and Anna couldnt of been happier.

Q - Queen - What kind of leader are they? Are they entitled? What have they inherited from their parents? How powerful are they? Do they act superior towards others?
(Sorry if I'm late, but I still gotta send one in!)
"If that's whit y'wanna do, am no gonnae stop ya."
Anam's not a very... pro-active leader. He'll point you in the right direction and hope you succeed but ultimately won't take chare unless there's no other option. He doesn't really do the superiority thing either and practices an equal respect for every person.
The Warder that taught him as a boy had a similar approach and Anam grew up learning predominantly by doing or failing. He inherited the man's tendency to be reserved socially, and tbough he doesn't remember her much anymore, his want to look after others is very much a trait his mother instilled in him. Eilidh* treated everyone as close family, even those she just met and was an incredibly welcoming woman.
As for strength... his aetherial prowess is garbage and he tends not to touch it out of fear of the Mists effects, but he has well developed muscle from hunting with axe and spear. He'd likely hold his own well enough in a fight until someone added a mage but, overall, he's decidedly average.
((Mòran taing! It's never too late friend <3 ))

Doctors introducing kidney transplant from brain-dead donors in Bangladesh
If successful, this cadaveric kidney transplant will raise new hopes among the patients who need kidneys but cannot find living donors.
The government last year amended the organ donation law allowing collection of organs from the brain-dead. But getting consent from the relatives remains a major challenge.
Dr ASM Tanim Anwar, who is coordinating the Bangladesh-Korea Kidney Transplantation team, told that the South Korean team will be coming to Dhaka next week.
“They will perform first cadaveric organ donor transplantation in Bangladesh if brain-dead donors could be found and consent from the family obtained,” he said.
“This is a major challenge. We have to raise awareness about this issue. There is no religious barrier contrary to what some people perceive.”
A registrar of nephrology at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Tanim Anwar had a fellowship on organ donor management and transplant from Korea University Anam Hospital.
He said the Korean specialised transplant team from Anam Hopital would be coming to give a select group of Bangladeshi doctors’ hands-on training on cadaveric transplantation.
The surgery can be done in any of the four hospitals – Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Birdem and Combined Military Hospital – based on the availability of the donor.
“Technology is not a problem for us since we are doing kidney transplantation for decades from the living donors. We need to know how to do it from a brain-dead person,” said the doctor.
Patients with kidney failure depend on dialysis for their kidneys to function. Transplantation is a preferred option for them for a longer and better life.
Bangladesh does not have statistics on the number of kidney patients and the demand for transplantation.
Estimates suggest around 20 million people are currently suffering from some form of kidney diseases.
The annual demand for the kidney transplantation is estimated to be 5000, but on average, only around 120 people can manage kidneys from their relatives to undergo a transplant.
President of the International Federation of Eye and Tissue Bank Mahmood Farazdaghi in 2012, during his Bangladesh visit, told there was no religious barrier to donation of organs posthumously.
Citing references of Grand Mufti of Al-Azhar University, the foremost institution in the Islamic world for the study of Sunni theology and Sharia, he had said, "When a person dies, doctors can decide what is useable for another human being and what is not."
Tens of thousands of heart patients may not need open-heart surgery
The procedure, called transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), has been reserved mostly for patients so old and sick they might not survive open-heart surgery. Now, two large clinical trials show that TAVR is just as useful in younger, healthier patients.
It might even be better, offering lower risks of disabling strokes and death, compared to open-heart surgery. Cardiologists say it will likely change the standard of care for most patients with failing aortic valves.
In open-heart surgery, a patient’s ribs are cracked apart and the heart is stopped to insert the new aortic valve.
With TAVR, the only incision is a small hole in the groin where the catheter is inserted. Most patients are sedated, but awake through the procedure, and recovery takes just days, not months, as is often the case following the usual surgery.
The results “shift our thinking from asking who should get TAVR to why should anyone get surgery,” said Dr Howard Herrmann, director of interventional cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania.
The studies are to be published in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented Sunday at the American College of Cardiology’s annual meeting.
The Food and Drug Administration is expected to approve the procedure for lower-risk patients. As many as 20,000 patients a year would be eligible for TAVR, in addition to the nearly 60,000 intermediate- and high-risk patients who get the operation now.
“This is a clear win for TAVR,” said Dr Michael J Mack, a heart surgeon at Baylor Scott and White The Heart Hospital-Plano, in Texas. From now on, “we will be very selective” about who gets open-heart surgery, said Mack, a principal investigator in one of the trials.
Some healthier patients will still need the traditional surgery — for example, those born with two flaps to the aortic valve instead of the usual three.
The trials were sponsored by makers of TAVR valves, Edwards Lifesciences of Irvine, California, and Medtronic, headquartered in Dublin.
China says tests of human immunoglobulin are HIV negative
"Shanghai authorities have run virus tests for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C on the reported batch and they all show negative," the National Medical Products Administration said in a statement on late Wednesday.
China's National Health Commission had earlier said there was a "very low" risk of HIV infection from the batch after a baby was reported to have tested "weak" HIV positive.
It asked medical institutions to halt the use of the batch and seal remaining supplies for further investigation.
Shanghai's Medical Products Administration said it had ordered the manufacturer to halt production.
Human immunoglobulin is made with human blood plasma and is used to treat a variety of conditions.
The Shanghai Medical Products Administration said in a statement on Wednesday that the batch, identified by China's National Health Commission as number 20180610Z, was made by China Meheco Xinxing Pharma Co, a unit of state-controlled ChinaMeheco Group Co Ltd.
The manufacturer could not immediately be reached for comment on Thursday. Chinese offices are largely shut for the week-long Lunar New Year holiday.
The investigation began after a baby in Jiangxi province had initially tested "weak" positive for HIV during a health check, exposure that was traced to the batch under investigation, domestic media the China Economic Observer reported. The baby subsequently tested negative for HIV, the report said.
It is not clear how many people may have been injected with the batch under investigation. The media report said the batch contained 12,226 doses due to expire in 2021.
The Chinese government has repeatedly vowed to tighten safety oversight and to crack down on companies and officials following a string of food and drug scandals in recent years, including one last year involving the maker of a rabies vaccine.

OTP: Cullen Rutherford. They truly hated each other at first and then, naturally, fell in love. A tale as old as time.
Acceptable ships: I think she’d be amenable to a relationship with Varric and Bull. But if she wasn’t in a relationship with Cullen, she’d 100% be going after Knight-Commander Rylen. I guess she has a thing for high-ranking military guys? wow Penny
BroTP: She has an incredibly deep love and respect for Dorian. I’d like to say he’s her Anam Cara. She’s also close with Varric, and, after MUCH time spent getting to know each other, Cassandra.
NOTP: No Blackwall and no Solas. She admires and respects both of them, but thinks Solas is too arrogant, and she really doesn’t like the pedestal Blackwall puts her on.

August 31, 2018: Frontier House
So you’re going to Korea University...
The biggest worry I had was choosing the right place to stay and with enough browsing, I figured out that CJ International was my best bet: it's a new building, has a kitchen, refrigerator, and a gym within the building.
The other options like Frontier House, Global House, and Anam Hall didn't have those amenities, so the people staying in those dorms were always eating out, unless they knew someone in CJ International who can refrigerate their leftovers for them.
Although CJ International was the best option, there was another factor that made me hesitant to take on CJ.
It was up the CJ hill.
There are two ways to get to CJ from campus - the steep hill or the Frontier stairs, and they're both not good options.
The steep Global hill: the steep hill is accessed from behind Incheon Memorial Hall which eventually leads to Global House. The picture below was taken on top of the Global hill. The gray building on the very right side is the Global House; the beige building in the middle is the Anam Hall, and the gray building on the very left is the Frontier House. The bottom of the Global hill lies the Frontier House and from there, you have to climb up another steeper hill to get to CJ International.
The Frontier stairs: a 112-step stairs that are accessible from Anam-dong, which the entire campus of Korea University is situated in. If you plan to opt out from the Frontier stairs, the Frontier hill is accessible by continuing to walk up the street, to the left of the stairs. Ask anyone who has dormed in Korea University what they hated the most. I am very sure they'll mention "the stairs" as their number one.
The Frontier hill takes you to the CU convenience store, which serves as the fork in the road leading to the CJ hill on the left side and the continuation of Frontier hill to the right side.
On the way to CJ International are Men and Women's dormitory buildings reserved only for the Korean students; so if you're reading this in English as an international student, chances are, you won't be applying for either one of these dorms.
Continuing up the Frontier hill at the end are both Anam Hall (to your left) and Frontier House (to your right). Those staying in Global House have to climb up a third hill past Anam Hall and Frontier House.
If you ask me, I think Frontier is the better option because the amount of people staying in CJ complaining everyday is insane. Anam-dong and the CU convenience store are more easily accessible from Frontier and Anam Hall than they are to CJ International and Global House, since they're both high up in the hall on opposite ends.
I stayed in Frontier House, since CJ International filled up very quickly. Enroll early if you want a CJ room. Most of my CJ friends enrolled from February to April for the summer program starting in June.
Frontier House is separated into two buildings. When facing the stairs and Anam-dong, to your right is the women's building and to the left is the men's building.
There are three main rules in Frontier House: no drinking, no eating, and nobody of the opposite gender.
People usually get food delivered into Frontier, and most of the time, the Resident Assistant and the security at the lobby let them through, and sometimes they don't. If the RA or the security stops them from going up with their food, they ask the students to eat it outside Frontier; soju on the other hand can be sneaked in a backpack.
But since genders can't mix in the dorms, a lot of the students meet outside Frontier to eat their takeouts and drink soju with their friends of the opposite gender. Outside Frontier is everybody's meetup place, no matter which dorm they're staying in: CJ International, Global House, or Anam Hall.
The rooms in Frontier House have the same blueprint as the other dormitory buildings, though with two beds on opposite ends of the wall. Each area of the room gets their own desk and their side of the closet.
Here's a YouTube video of a quick tour of the dormitory: Frontier House Dorm | Korea University
What to bring: your own hamper, trash can, hangers, bath towels, bathroom floor mats, and basic shower necessities.
Since I stayed in the summer, a pillowcase, a Korea University blanket, and a bedding were provided for free, though students usually pay about ₩20,000 during the semester.
Each room gets their own Wi-Fi, if you're wondering. The Wi-Fi user and pass codes are taped at the lobby where the security is - it's best to take pictures of all the pass codes, since there's a high chance you'll be lodging in one of your friend's rooms at some point in the semester. Save them the time yelling out all 12 numbers whenever you visit them.
At the start of each semester, previous students usually leave their hangers, pans, hampers, and trash cans for the next tenants to use. They're available at Anam Hall while supplies last.
Frontier House has a lounge and a balcony on each floor where students can socialize, meet up to do group work, or get some fresh air.
Washing and drying rooms are in basement 2 (B2) next to the reading lounge a big room with many long tables to do quiet school work in. They're both accessible 24/7, though the washer and dryer don't work from 3-6 AM.
You need a pre-paid card to use the washer and dryer for ₩1,000. The machine is right in front of the elevator once you step out. A 30-minute wash is ₩1,000 while with the same price gives you 50 minutes of drying. Just follow the instructions given. Don't worry, there's an English translation. There's a vending machine for a detergent and dryer sheet together for ₩500.
Since Frontier House and Anam Hall are found in the lowest point of the CJ and Global Hills, the two dormitory buildings have the easiest and fastest access to Anam-dong and Anam Station. Anam Hall also has the cafeteria where students can purchase meal plans, though the cafeteria is accessible for three buildings, except CJ, without having to go down a hill. Those staying in Global House can access Anam Hall through one flight of stairs just past the security guard.
You guys have no idea how bad the hills are in this campus. I suggest you really avoid this because you're going to have to climb up these hills everyday.
To get to campus from Frontier, you can go up Global hill to access the back of Incheon Memorial Hall or down the Frontier stairs or the Frontier hill into Anam-dong. Those living in CJ International have the option to climb up a different 100-step stairs instead of walking up both Frontier and Global hills; or they could go down Frontier hill into Anam-dong.
From the Frontier stairs and Frontier hill, everything else is accessible: PC bang (PC방), restaurants, Anam Station, Anam nightlife, convenience stores, and all other entrances to Korea University.
To access the closest entrance to Korea University in Anam-dong (without hills), keep walking straight until you see the place with bright yellow sign, just in front of the cheap kimbap restaurant all the locals frequent:
Turn to your left on the yellow sign, then turn right on the first turn, away from the 7/11 store. You will see Korea University then.
Compared to the Global hill, this way has no hills at all, though it takes longer. This route takes about ten to fifteen minutes, while entering the campus from Global hill takes less than ten minutes.
In the end, I believe Frontier House is just more accessible to everything - it's closer to Anam-dong and is at the bottom of both steep hills. Plus, you get a great view of the area.
It is also the largest dormitory on campus, so there's a high chance that you and your friends will be staying in the same building.
Read: it's easier to hang and socialize in each other's rooms at night without having to break sweat by leaving the building and climbing up hills.
Have a great time in Korea University! Go tigers!

Pardon, anlamadım… / Sorry, I don't understand…
by Julika Steglich, ANAMED PhD Fellow 2021–2022
Fig. 1. Çurkurcuma Hamamı: a modern and simple-looking solution for the typical skylights of the domes (Photo by the author).
It took me some time to think of a topic to write about for this blog. Looking for inspiration, I wandered the streets of Istanbul, photographing various things that interested me. I came across very modern hamam buildings (Fig. 1) and started to think maybe I could write about bathing culture, since my PhD topic is the analysis of a Roman-imperial thermal bath located in the microregion of Pergamon.
I reconsidered because, firstly, Roman thermal baths are different from modern Turkish hamams in Istanbul and even conventional Roman baths. These differences and recent news about Roman thermal bath research within the whole Roman empire are available to read, for example, in the articles and on the blog of a dear colleague, Silvia González Soutelo (https://healingspasinantiquity.es/news/). Secondly, I was not sure if there is, apart from the tourist attractions, still a Turkish bathing culture at hamams among my generation and younger people in Turkey. So, another option was to visit different hamams and ask the staff and visitors about the current bathing culture. I then remembered my first visit to a hamam in Bergama; I could not understand the woman who worked there trying to explain the process in Turkish to me. She wanted me to lie down and relax. But I had problems with relaxing, since I could not understand what would happen to me. Unfortunately, my Turkish is still limited to basic vocabulary and grammatical knowledge.
And that was the moment when I became more aware of the thing that permanently influences my daily life at ANAMED and in Istanbul: it is the language barrier. Sometimes I even experience some cultural differences with my English-speaking friends, since my native language is German and I grew up in Germany.
Before my time here, I took Turkish courses in Germany and tried to practise vocabulary and grammar regularly. My teachers and quite a few of my fellow students were children of Turkish immigrants. It was interesting to see and learn that they grew up speaking Turkish without knowing the grammar and often even the written version of their mother and/or father tongue. I felt sorry that they could not learn it in elementary school as they had done for German and that they needed to be at university to finally take a Turkish class, even though there is such a large Turkish community in Germany. But I rarely thought about their parents or grandparents and how it must have been to come to Germany in the 1960s, a time when you could not easily use Google translate, internet forums, or Wikipedia to get an idea of what someone wants or what needs to be done. Now I am the yabancı (stranger) in Turkey. It is not fully comparable, since I will leave after the nine months of the fellowship. However, there were moments when I got an idea of what it must have felt like: for example, my first hospital visit here in Istanbul to test for Covid-19. I had a fever and felt horrible. I was standing in line for the registration, and as I am, on the one hand, German and used to standing at a distance from others and, on the other hand, reserved by nature, people did not understand that I was also in line and passed me. When the receptionist simply did not understand me, even though I tried to explain to the person in my best Turkish that I had a fever and needed a PCR test, I was firmly convinced in my feverish delirium that every person in that hospital was terribly rude. Even after a person asked me in English how he could help and repeated my questions in Turkish, I got even more flustered, since I had the feeling that he said almost the same words in Turkish with almost the same pronunciation to the receptionist as me, but this time the receptionist finally understood. When it took me almost half an hour to fill out a very simple registration form for the test, bursting into fits of laughter because Google translate was translating total nonsense, I was ready to apologize personally to every tourist and migrant in Germany for our complicated bureaucracy and every bad experience they had with the German language.
I really wanted to be back at ANAMED, my comfort zone (Fig. 2), where everyone at least speaks English. But of course, my so-called comfort zone also demanded some linguistic thinking from me, and now and then, some information got lost in translation. Sometimes I was even happy about the loss, and sometimes, it caused unnecessary trouble. Of course, not everyone has the exact same experience, but I think we all know those moments when we don't have the energy to leave our comfort zone, when we are relieved to meet someone who speaks the same language, with the same cultural background, where we don't have to explain ourselves so often. This kind of experience may be one of the reasons why foreigners of similar origins often gather in one place and form communities.
Fig. 2. ANAMED terrace: a place made to be a comfort zone (Photo by the author).
But it would be sad if we always stayed in our comfort zone. That is why I want to give some, of course not new, ideas on overcoming such situations to everyone who might sometimes feel and experience the same at ANAMED or in Istanbul:
For English, I can highly recommend that you not only watch TV shows in English but read English newspapers more often. In this way, you will learn the vocabulary for discussing not only academic or simple stuff. But the most important thing is to accept that you need time and practice until you understand and can express almost everything, even in places where it is very loud and crowded. And if you need a quick and excellent translator, use this link: https://www.deepl.com/translator.
For Turkish, the most important words to survive in the first weeks are:
Merhaba – Hello
Teşekkürler – Thank you
Nasılsın? / Nasılısınız? – How are you? informally/formally
Iyiyim, teşekkürler, ya sen? – I'm fine, thank you, and you?
Pardon – Sorry -> You can also use it to get the attention of the waitress or waiter.
Menü, lütfen – Menu, please
Hesap, lütfen – The bill, please
Bir su, lütfen. / Bir su istiyorum. / Bir su alabilir miyim? – A water, please. / I want a water / Can I have a water? -> The last option is the nicest way to ask for something.
Kolay gelsin – Good luck.
Anladım – I understood.
Pardon, anlamadım. – Sorry, I didn't understand.
Don't be discouraged if your pronunciation is not immediately understood. Sometimes people are not expecting you to speak Turkish. Keep on doing it, and the slower you speak, the better the other person will understand what you are trying to say. If they ask you something back and you cannot understand, you can say: "Pardon, anlamadım. Maalesef, sadece biraz Türkçe biliyorum.” – "Sorry, I don't understand. Unfortunately, I only speak a little Turkish." Since you are in Istanbul, you might be lucky, and someone may help you who can also speak English. And even if not, you have your hands and facial expressions, and in the age of internet translators, you are never completely lost.
Another thing you can do is to take a Turkish course with someone recommended by ANAMED and/or try to find a Tandem partner. But be careful if it is a good friend. You might end up drinking beer and talking about everything and anything in English…
If everything does not help and you want to let go of any intercultural understanding during a conversation, you can put your thumb together with your fingertips, move your hand up and down and say "arkadaşım" (my friend). That would be a very Turkish way of expressing the end of your patience. Use it wisely!
Anyway, everything will turn out fine, and maybe you will have a similar experience to mine. Not only do I feel motivated to improve my foreign language skills in general, but the experience also even changed my opinion about my native language. I really had no high opinion of the German language, as it will always be linked to our past and everyone makes fun of the harshness and the absurdity of the articles. I like the sound and grammatical structure of French and Turkish more. But I have noticed, for example, how nice it is that German has so many special words that have no equivalent in English or Turkish. I learned to love my own language, so to speak. This positive experience has somehow inspired me and will give new impetus to the writing process of my dissertation.
I also wish you a great time in Istanbul, and kolay gelsin!
